When it comes to booking rental cars, there are quite a few websites to choose from. If you're not set on booking directly with one of the big national chains like Enterprise, Avis, Budget, Hertz or Alamo, you could potentially save even more money by using one of the options below.

Whether you have elite status with a car rental company or not, there are different ways to compare rental companies and find the best pricing for your next rental.

We always recommend pricing a rental directly with a national chain website so you have an idea of the going rate before moving on to the aggregator sites that compare multiple offers.

Costco Travel

For Costco members, this is a no-brainer. Costco negotiates rates on everything from vacation packages and cruises to car rentals for its members. The site allows you to compare prices from participating Alamo, Avis, Budget and Enterprise locations and shows a grid of available car types and prices across those companies so you can make the best decision.

For the purposes of pricing, an airport was chosen below, but once you enter your desired city, you can select different locations within that city from a map and compare pricing.

There are a few rules for renting with Costco: The primary renter needs to be a Costco member, but additional drivers do not, and drivers must be 25 years of age or older.

Once you've selected your car and are ready to place a reservation, you'll need to provide your Costco membership number. One of the perks of Costco Travel is that you can make a reservation without worrying about paying until you pick up your rental car.

AutoSlash is a car rental aggregator, meaning it pulls information from many different rental sites to allow you to compare pricing. One of its interesting features is that it allows you to enter any memberships, credit cards or frequent flyer programs you belong to, and it will search for applicable discounts.

TPG's Katie Genter wrote a comprehensive guide to using AutoSlash for rental car shopping.

Once you enter in all relevant information, AutoSlash will email you a link to view your quotes. You can then choose to book now and pay now or pay later.

One of the interesting features that AutoSlash offers is the ability to track rental car prices. Once you've made a reservation with free cancellation, go back to the AutoSlash website and fill out the form to track price drops for your rental . You will need your current reservation information to fill out the form.

You will then be able to check the boxes for any of the rental car companies you'd like to track and also choose only to receive an email alert if the price drops below what you have currently reserved. This could potentially save you money and allow you to rebook at a lower rate.

Often referred to as the "Airbnb of rental car sites," Turo has definitely caught on in cities across the U.S. and even some Canadian provinces and the United Kingdom. In short, Turo is a peer-to-peer car rental site that can also be accessed and managed through an app.

Many TPG staffers have used Turo and share positive experiences in the TPG guide to renting with Turo . Some of the advantages of using this service include the lower fee for drivers under 25 years of age, that delivery service can sometimes be available, and renting from a local could be more convenient than seeking out a rental car location.

The one downside would be that you usually have to return the car to the same location where you picked it up, so if you're looking for a one-way rental, a traditional rental car site might work better for you in that situation.

A few quick test searches found rental prices equal to or less expensive than traditional rental car companies. The handy map will show you the locations of all the rentals available in your area for the dates that you search.

While Turo doesn't have airline partners like the big car rental companies, there are still opportunities to earn points and miles on your rentals . Since Turo codes in the travel category, be sure to use a credit card that earns you the most points for travel.

Maybe you've only searched Expedia for hotels or flights, but it also offers rental cars and the option to book all trip components together if you'd like. When searching for hotels, you can check the box to add a flight and add a car.

Expedia's car rental interface is pretty straightforward and convenient. You can use filters to search for options like refundable rentals and the ability to pay at the counter. It's also a transparent booking site, meaning you will see the company you're renting with before deciding to book.

In 2022, Expedia Group announced a new rewards program called One Key which would unify rewards across its family of brands: Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz and vacation rental site Vrbo. There's still no official launch date in 2023 for this new program.

If you are a AAA member, check the AAA website for your area to see if there are car rental deals. The AAA site will search multiple car rental sites for you to find the best deals. If you aren't already a AAA member, you can read the TPG guide to AAA membership to learn more about the benefits and determine if it's worth it for you to join.

Some of the exclusive member benefits for car rentals include up to 20% off the base rate in the U.S. and Canada, up to 10% off the base rate on international rentals, free use of one child safety seat, and no charge for up to four additional drivers who are AAA members.

There are additional exclusive benefits through AAA's partnership with Hertz , such as 10% off a tank of gas when purchasing gas at local prices, and you can return the vehicle with any amount of fuel. The young renters fee is also waived for members ages 20-24.

To start the search process, I had to enter my Hertz membership number, and then it asked me to verify my full name and ZIP code to validate that I was a AAA member. The search feature offers pay-now and pay-at-the-counter options as well as AAA member rates and standard rates. You can even filter by car company, and the top of the search screen shows you what discounts are available with each company.

There are many search options available online for finding rental car discounts. Each site has its pros and cons, so we recommend finding a site that works best for you, and that leverages any elite status or membership that you might already have.

How to Book the Cheapest Car Rental Possible

D riving by car is one of the freest ways to travel. You have the flexibility to stop at epic lookouts, quaint cafes that call your name, and best of all, aren't trapped in the nightmarish herd that is bus sightseeing tours.

While driving is an ideal travel form for many, having the confidence that you've secured the best rental price can be tricky. Here's our best tips to booking the cheapest car rental possible!

1. Use a broad search engine

You'll find different prices on every car rental website for every destination, so do a broad search first  to identify the cheapest car rental companies at your destination. Booking Buddy  does this best, as it prepares the same search across many different sites, letting you easily compare rental prices. Best of all, almost all of the sites it searches offer  free cancellation and free amendments to your booking. This is ideal since it allows you to  place-hold a low rate in advance , then cancel for free if your plans change or you find something cheaper.

If we feel like being extra thorough, we will also search  VroomVroomVroom , which sometimes shaves another $10 off the cheapest price we've seen on other sites.

2. Determine if it's cheaper to book directly

Once you've figured out which car rental companies are cheapest, hop on the company websites to seek discount codes or specials, as these don't always show up in a search engine results .

3. Always search for coupon codes

A quick Google search for company coupons will often reveal an additional discount. Type the company name and year, e.g.”Avis car rental coupon code 2015″.  RetailMeNot and Coupons.com are most likely to pop up, and these are both good coupon hubs with regular postings for major rental companies.

4. Don't pre-pay for fuel

A new trend in car rental booking is to offer customers a “discounted” tank of gas at the time of booking so that you don't have to return the tank full. Basically, you pay in advance for a tank so you can bring it back empty.  This is NOT worth doing!

For starters, no one actually brings a completely empty tank of gas . Who drives their rental back with the “FILL TANK NOW” alarm blaring? No one , that's who. More likely than not, you'll have at least a quarter tank that you paid for, in addition to the full “discounted” tank you agreed to buy.

Finally, take note that the rental company's cheaper fuel rate is usually only pennies less than the gas stations. In a nutshell:  do not pay ahead for fuel!

5. Avoid buying rental company insurance

Car rental companies make a large profit on insurance, and will often insist that you require it. Unless you have to (and you may not), don't !

There are 4 ways that you can be covered for car insurance without buying it from a rental company:

• Your credit card  – check your card conditions and if rental coverage is included, make sure you book with that card to validate it, and understand the policy beforehand.
• Regular (at-home) car insurance sometimes covers rentals too, call to check.
• Travel insurance sometimes covers rentals, call & check.
• Independent car rental insurance (see below).

Independent rental insurance companies offer annual insurance policies much cheaper than rental agencies. With annual policies from ~$42+, this can easily be more cost-wise especially if you are making multiple bookings over a year.  ICarHireInsurance and Insurance4CarHire are two recommended options recommended by The Guardian.

6. Decline add-ons like GPS

You needn't overpay for a GPS device that you won't get to keep when apps like Google Maps exist already. Alternatively, it can even be cheaper to buy a GPS device ahead of time, or install an equivalent navigation app on your smartphone.

7. Decline upgrades

Book economy or compact cars and avoid upgrades (whether free or offered), as this usually means you're getting a less fuel efficient vehicle.

8. Read the fine print

Look for hidden fees, taxes, or “D oes not include… ” phrases to make sure that the price on your booking is the true final cost. It doesn't hurt to e-mail or phone companies directly to confirm the price of the online receipt (especially if it's suspiciously cheap). Better safe than sorry!

Other fine prints to watch for:

• Mileage restrictions on the booking. Some companies will charge a dollar amount per excess mileage, so be sure to identify if these restrictions exist.
• Hidden taxes or fees.  Check if your booking clearly says “all taxes and fees included” on your receipt.

9. Do a thorough inspection on pick-up

The Cost To Rent A Car In Cancun

In order to rent a vehicle in Mexico, you must be at least 21 years old and have had your license for a minimum of 2 years. Your average economy car will cost approximately $5.00 USD per day, while a standard SUV will cost about $14.00 USD per day. This does not include the $30-$50 cost of insurance you are required to purchase.

Generally, your US auto insurance policy will not cover you in Mexico. You may be able to purchase a plan through your insurance, just for the time you are staying in Mexico. For a full week of rental, you are looking to spend around $350.00 USD in total.

Buying Auto Insurance In Cancun

As of September 23, 2014, Mexico law requires you to have Mexico Liability Auto Insurance for all vehicles driving on federal roads. Only Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance is required and any other insurance is optional. If you believe your credit card company includes car rental coverage for Mexico, verify this by calling them and asking what the exact procedure would be if you had a claim in Mexico. Also, ask them what kind of vehicles are covered under their policy before renting a car. There will be many types of insurance options to choose from when renting a vehicle.

Third-Party Liability

Third-party liability insurance, also known as liability-only insurance pays for injuries to other people and/or damage to their property as a result of an accident you cause. TPL is required by law on all vehicles driving on the roadway in Mexico. The only way to avoid this is to provide proof that your insurance policy currently covers you in Mexico. TPL is the only insurance you are required by law to have, any other insurance options will be purchased at your own discretion.

Additional Liability Insurance

ALI is an additional liability insurance policy that provides additional liability coverage in addition to the limits provided in the agreement up to a specific amount.

Collision Damage Waiver/ Loss Damage Waiver

Collision damage waiver (CDW), also known as loss damage waiver (LDW), is optional insurance coverage that is available to you when you rent a car. CDW provides coverage for your rental vehicle if you have been involved in an accident. LDW is similar to CDW but provides you additional coverage for theft if your rental vehicle is stolen.

Personal Accident Insurance

PAI provides the renter as well as the passenger’s coverage for accidental death, accidental medical expenses and ambulance. Usually, this is capped out at a certain amount which is set by the rental agency.

Most US auto insurance policies will not cover you while driving in Mexico. However, your US insurance company may offer tourist temporary coverage while in Mexico. The Cost Of Mexico Car Insurance

The cost to rent a vehicle in Cancun is very cheap. The insurance on the other hand is where they get you. The average price of insurance on a rental vehicle in Cancun will range from $30.00 to $50.00 USD per day depending on the policies you choose. First, you need to figure out if third-party liability insurance is included in the rental car price. If so, no additional insurance policies are required by law, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to take advantage of other policies offered.

You will need to use a credit card to rent your vehicle, a hold will be placed on your card and is often based on the value of the vehicle. It may take a few weeks for the hold to be removed from your account after returning the vehicle. This is normal.

There are plenty of buses and shuttles you can ride, such as ADO (one of the largest Mexican bus companies). They charge $18.00 USD for a one-way ticket from Cancun to Tulum, as well as $18.00 USD to return back to Cancun, for a total round trip price of $36.00 USD. Taking a bus could still be cheaper than renting a vehicle, considering the insurance for a rental car alone cost $30.00 to $50.00 USD per day.

Public transportation may not suit everyone. If you want to be in complete control of where and when you are going somewhere, then renting a vehicle is your best option.
