Trek Madone 4.7 Compact review
Solid long-distance machine

Trek's ever-expanding Madone family covers both race and sportive use. The smooth comfort and ultra relaxed steering of the 4.7 means it's slow to respond in sprinting terms, but the payback in plush comfort is massive and it's a pamperingly relaxed long-haul machine.
Ride & handling: Outstandingly smooth ride but steering may be too slow for some
It’s obvious that relaxed, long- haul comfort is the primary mission of the Madone as soon as you get on board. For a start, while the angles suggest a very responsive ride, the fork sweep and cockpit dimensions make the steering super-steady. It’s so stable we actually wandered off the road a couple of times when we weren’t concentrating.
Once you get the hang of the laconically lazy feel and put more weight behind it, the Madone is an outstandingly surefooted and confident descender. It swung round normally nerve-racking switchbacks without any hint of the hives, and dropped like a hawk on straightline plummets, however grim and gusty the weather.
Its smoothness and calm, unflustered ride quality is equally outstanding. It comes as close to you’ll get to making smooth roads feel like carpet and rough roads a lot less taxing than normal. You still get clouted through the brake hoods by the biggest potholes, but over the usual frost-damaged asphalt acne it spins along as though there’s 10psi less in the tyres than there actually is.
The ride position of the Trek is roomy enough to relax and breathe easily on too. Add the comfy saddle, steady hands-free steering, plus the smooth gliding ride and this is a very natural and happy place to be on a long ride.
Where its relaxed demeanour has a downside is when the tempo goes up and you’re chasing wheels. The low bike weight means it’s quick enough on a steady, sustained spin and you’ll come over the top of climbs in good shape. The power is like the handling – it'll get the job done, but you’ll need to wait a while for it to happen.
Frame & equipment: Reasonable weight and decent price for an Ultegra-equipped bike
Trek use several different levels of carbon fibre frame in the Madone family, with this 4- series frame being the most affordable. It’s still an average weight for the price though. Apart from mass, the main differences between it and the 5 series Madones (£2,800 +) are a conventional bottom bracket and external cable routing.
That actually makes sourcing new bottom bracket bearings and maintaining the cables slightly easier though, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s an extensively shaped frame too, with inverted-D section top tube and relatively slim down tube that widen to wrap around the small diameter seat tube. Big multi-section chainstays reach back towards cowled dropouts with a shaped receiver for a Trek Duo Trap computer sensor moulded into the offside stay.
Multi-shaped seat stays curve gently up to a recessed wishbone section below a bolted seat collar. Most importantly, you still get the E2 tapered fork steerer system with its stiffness-increasing hourglass profile. The fork itself is an alloy steerer and crown unit with carbon blades. Theoretically this isn’t great for the price, but it rides really well.
The Madone 4.7 comes with a full suite of Shimano Ultegra stop/go kit, which has more composite and alloy bits than 105, plus PTFE lined cables and Dura-Ace-style hollow-armed chainrings on the compact chainset. This means a 160g weight saving across the whole group, and slicker, longer-lasting shifting performance.
You can get the same frame with a 105 grouptest and heavier wheels for £1,850. Apart from that, it’s a full suite of Trek’s own brand Bontrager kit, including white-rimmed wheels and two-colour, single-compound tyres. Compact drop bars and a slim carbon seatpost add comfort to the ride.

Internal Cable Routing
Another thing to mention, is the internal cable routing of this bike. In conclusion, this helps you too, keep the bike cables in mint condition, and also it looks better. No more cables, surrounding the bike.
Madone 4.7 H2 Compact components
Fork material.
The fork is made out of carbon, so, it’s a great addition to the bike’s value. However, carbon forks should be regularly inspected for damage because even the smallest crack could cause the fork to fall apart.
Wheels size
When it comes to wheels, the Madone 4.7 H2 Compact bike is equipped with the 700c aluminum model. These are the most popular wheels for road, aero, gravel, cyclocross, race, and gravel bikes. However, while they give you great speed and control, these wheels are not so bump-friendly.
Nothing is more important on a bike than its ability to brake properly. Trek Madone 4.7 H2 Compact is equipped with Rim brakes. Slightly lighter than hydraulic brakes, rim brakes are a budget choice. However, they have problems in wet conditions.
This bike is available in 7 sizes . They vary from 157 cm – 195 cm (5.15 ft – 6.4 ft) . In short, it won’t be difficult to find the right one for you.

Handy tools
Tools to help you even more.
Loved the world over, the Marlin has long held the hearts of new riders and seasoned rippers alike, and to keep everyone rolling with ear-to-ear grins we’ve revamped it with more trail confidence than ever. Whether zipping through town, dipping your toes into the trail for the first time or slicing through switchbacks as a well-seasoned rider, you’ll appreciate the sleek new frame that ups the capability and brings looks to match. There’s a reason why it’s always been your favourite.
Total trail confidence A bike's geometry is the defining framework it's built on, and the Marlin is a true mountain bike at it's core. Its measurements are perfectly dialled to give you a confidence-inspiring, planted feel when you’re rolling down steep and bumpy trails, while keeping it easy to pedal back to the top when you’re ready for another lap.
Marlin’s head tube (a) sits at a slacker (more acute) angle. The slacker head tube angle (b) moves your front wheel further in front of you. Take it to the trail, and this slacker head tube angle (b) boosts stability and control for confidence when descents get steep and rowdy.
To balance a slacker head tube angle (b) , the Marlin features a steeper (more upright) seat tube angle (d) . A steeper seat tube (c) lets you get the most out of every pedal stroke, so you don’t waste power on the climb to the top.
The Marlin is equipped with a short stem and wider handlebar for more direct control and responsiveness when you’re manoeuvring through rocks and roots. Meanwhile, a longer reach (e) gives you extra stability so you can ride faster and more confidently.
Secure your ride
A new Thru-Skew axle provides better rear wheel security, holding your wheel in place snugly and ensuring it doesn't slip out of the frame, even when you're rolling through rough-and-tumble terrain.
Fully guarded
Full-length, full-coverage guards on the chainstay protect your frame and keep your ride quiet.
Float on the trail
Big 2.4˝ tyres elevate traction, so you stay planted on dusty switchbacks. But not only do bigger tyres give you more grip — they also soak up bumps for a smoother ride.
Upgrade ready
With a frame this nice, you won’t want to part ways with your Marlin as your skills grow. The Marlin Gen 3 is upgrade-ready, so you can upgrade your bike when you upgrade your skills. New internal cable routing lets you install a dropper post – and sizes XS and up can be upgraded to a bigger 120 mm fork when you’re ready to take on bigger trails.
A bike for everyone We believe that every rider deserves a well-fitted bike, that’s why the Marlin is available in every size from XXS to XXL – and even an 'extra-medium' size for riders who fall in between a medium and large. Each size is tuned to its riders, with Smart Wheel Sizing that scales the wheel size with the bike size, so every rider has comfortable standover height. Smaller, XXS and XS frames also feature a curved top tube to boost confidence and make getting on and off a breeze.
- Shop XS bikes
Make Marlin yours Whether you’re regularly ripping up the trail or a rugged city commuter, your Marlin can be fully customised with a treasure-trove of accessories. From kickstands and grips to bottle cages and bags, you can turn your Marlin into the perfect bike for your everyday ride.
- Deck out your Marlin
Trek warranty and backing We believe that when you put your heart and soul into something, you should have the stomach to back it up. That’s why we stand behind all Trek bikes with a limited-lifetime warranty. From your first ride to your 500th, we’ll be here for you in the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your Marlin. All you have to do is pop into your local Trek retailer and you’ll find all the support you need to get back spinning in no time.
The Marlin family Both generations of Marlins are true mountain bikes aimed at the rider who wants a versatile hardtail capable of off-road singletrack or in-city missions. Both generations have a 100 mm travel suspension fork and 29” wheels on most sizes except for smaller sizes with proportionate suspension travel and wheels, thus making it a great bike for shorter riders as well.
Marlin Gen 2
Get all-around versatility on Marlin Gen 2. It fits up to 2.2˝ tyres, and features balanced, neutral geometry that keeps you comfortable and in control as you venture off-road.
Marlin Gen 3
Get serious trail capability with Marlin Gen 3’s bigger, 2.4˝ tyre clearance, internal dropper post routing and a stiffer, more secure ThruSkew rear axle. Plus, its updated longer, slacker geometry gives you a boost in stability on steeper trails and at higher speeds.
Looking for something more to fill your singletrack appetite?
If you’re itching for a lighter weight, even faster hardtail, the X-Caliber is your ride. It’s light, sleek and efficient – perfect for new riders, cross-country racers and anyone who wants to cover a lot more trail miles in a lot less time.
The Roscoe delivers the capability of a full suspension trail bike in a simple hardtail package. The laid-back geometry that gives you tons of stability on rowdier trails, and it rolls on big 2.6˝ tyres that give tons of traction for getting through rough and tricky sections of trail.

Algebraic Geometry: start-up course
Algebraic geometry studies geometric loci defined by polynomial equations, for example, the complex plane curve f(x,y)=0. It plays an important role at both elementary and sophisticated levels in many areas of mathematics and theoretical physics, and provides the most visual and elegant tools to express all aspects of the interaction between different branches of mathematical knowledge. The course gives the flavor of the subject by presenting examples and applications of the ideas of algebraic geometry, as well as a first discussion of its technical apparatus.
Prerequisites: basic linear and multilinear algebra (tensor products, polylinear maps), basic ideas of commutative algebra (polynomial rings and their ideals). Some experience in geometry and topology (projective spaces, metric and topological spaces, simplicial complexes and homology groups) is desirable but not essential.

In line with several top race bikes, the Madone has the sort of rigidity usually reserved for buildings or oil tankers, its immense BB90 bottom bracket shell ably braced by that vast down tube and muscular asymmetric chainstays, which instantly translate the merest pressure into forward motion. . .
With the Madone and Domane, Trek offers riders a choice of two very different road bikes. The former is fashioned for performance, while the latter is devoted to endurance. About this book
This monograph presents the basic concepts of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry and their possible applications to modern nonlinear applied problems in mathematics and physics, summarizing the findings of roughly the last hundred years. The central sections cover the classical building blocks of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry, pseudo spherical surfaces theory, net geometrical investigative techniques of nonlinear differential equations in partial derivatives, and their applications to the analysis of the physical models. As the sine-Gordon equation appears to have profound “geometrical roots” and numerous applications to modern nonlinear problems, it is treated as a universal “object” of investigation, connecting many of the problems discussed.
The aim of this book is to form a general geometrical view on the different problems of modern mathematics, physics and natural science in general in the context of non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry.

Foundations of Lobachevsky geometry: axiomatics, models, images in Euclidean space
The problem of realizing the lobachevsky geometry in euclidean space, the sine-gordon equation: its geometry and applications of current interest, lobachevsky geometry and nonlinear equations of mathematical physics, non-euclidean phase spaces. discrete nets on the lobachevsky plane and numerical integration algorithms for \(\lambda^2\) -equations, back matter.
“The main aim of this book is to look at the potential of the geometry developed by Lobachevskii in the context of its emergence in various branches of current interest in contemporary mathematics and science, especially in nonlinear problems of mathematical physics. … the book is well written, very readable, and nicely illustrated throughout with many graphs and figures, especially figures of surfaces. … This unique book makes this difficult subject interesting and within reach.” (Paul F. Bracken, Mathematical Reviews, August, 2015)
“The book is original in its form and content. It covers a wide spectrum of geometry and analysis and it displays the Lobachevsky plane as a central object in the study of the classical equations of mathematical physics. The style is expository and clear. This book is a valuable addition to the geometric literature.” (Athanase Papadopoulos, zbMATH 1311.51002, 2015)
