Encompassed by jungle-clad hills, terraced rice paddies and glistening Indian Ocean beaches, the city of Padang is a conglomeration of trader warehouses packed with aromatic cinnamon and spices, traditional Indonesian homes and rustic bamboo shacks, anchored to its place on the south-eastern coast of Sumatra by a cosmopolitan local population of Chinese, Indonesian and European ex-pat alike.

Start by asking your Padang tour guide about the medley of markets that pepper the town, lurking between the sporadic traces of dutch colonial architecture and the banks of the Muaro River, selling woven cloths and whittled trinkets from the Minang hills. Then, why not delve into the bustling streets of Chinatown, sampling some of the region’s famous masakan Padang (comprising mainly of spicy beef curries and chilli laden satay)?

And once you’ve had your fill of city life, consider a walk along the pretty stretches of Padang Beach, where local juice sellers cluster to offer refreshments over a sunset show. Or, break out even further, to the beaches and legendary surf swells of the nearby Mentawai Islands, or the rugged caves and canyons of Bukittinggi town in the hills.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

Our team of travel experts and guides will design a tailored itinerary just for you., enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of..

"Pristine Beaches and Sumptuous Food"

Padang tourism.

Padang, an offbeat tourist destination is the provincial capital of West Sumatra and a prominent gateway to the home of the native tribe, Minangkabau tribe. A busy harbour, popular for its products such as rubber, cinnamon, coffee, tea and nutmeg, Padang is a perfect countryside where you can relax and enjoy the scenic beauty that the place has to offer. Previously a Dutch Colony, this urban Indonesian area offers an excellent dining scene to its guests.

The beaches in Padang are not crowded, making it a place where you can rejuvenate your senses, away from all the chaos and rush. Padang mostly has a tropical rainforest climate that receives frequent rainfall throughout the year, making it difficult for travellers to travel around the city. In 2017, Padang received the 'Adipura' award for being the cleanest and greenest cities and won the 'Adipura Kencana' thrice.

The native food is usually spicy and delicious; Rendang, Soto Padang and sate are a few Padang dishes that are relished by many. Just relax on the beach, or go swimming, hiking, snorkelling or fishing- Padang is sure to offer you with a lifetime experience that you're not going to forget for a long, long time!

Lake Maninjau

Lake Maninjau

A large crater lake, Lake Maninjau offers a great place to relax and experience the rural lifestyle and culture of Padang. A romantic getaway for couples, you should surely visit this place for the view of the sunset.

Pagaruyung Palace

Pagaruyung Palace

A three-storeyed building with a unique style of architecture, the Pagaruyung Palace is completely made of wood and houses some ancient antiques and costumes and is revered by the Minangkabau culture. The Palace has been renovated multiple times to maintain its charm after it was damaged in a fire.

Anai Valley

Anai Valley

Started during the period of the Dutch, the Ana Valley is one of the top tourist destinations, located between Padang and Bukkitingi. The valley is located on the main route and hence not easy to miss! you can sit on the rocks near the waterfall and enjoy the beauty of it. Weekends are usually crowded, so make sure to plan accordingly and go.

Mentawai Islands

Mentawi Islands

One of the most isolated places in Indonesia, the Mentawai islands are inhabited by the Mentawai tribe, who have very little contact with the outside world. Subjected to outside influences only from the 20th century, the people here still abide by their traditions and have a strong spiritual relationship with the forests. Immerse yourself in the tropical rainforests, away from the chaotic city life and experience in the traditions of the native tribes.

Air Manis Beach

Air Manis Beach

A favourite tourist site, Air Manis beach offers an ecstatic view of Mount Padang. The beach has a historical significance attached to it; there is a replica of a boat and a man, who is considered to be Malin Kundang. Legend has it that the man was turned to stone by his mother after he failed to acknowledge his mother once he became rich. The beach is serene and a good place to relax.

Museum Adityawarman

Museum Adityawarman

This iconic museum in Padang has to be explored by everybody who visits Padang as it stores the rich history and heritage of the Mianang culture. A major attraction here are the "Rumah Gandang", which are basically the traditional community houses of the Minangkabau tribe. These houses have now been converted into museums for people to get a glimpse of the native life. There are fascinating artefacts and antiques along with the traditional costumes and accessories of the people. It is popular among the tourists for its architecture and the displays that are available in the museum.

Chinatown

Although Chinatown is a small part of the city of Padang, it is quite famous for the presence of a Chinese temple, which proves the presence of Chinese settlers in the past. You will also find many places to eat in this clean and organised part of the city.

Bung Hatta Nature Reserve

Bung Hatta Nature Reserve

A tropical paradise for anybody who loves to spend time in lush greenery, the Bung Hatta Nature Reserve houses some rare and exotic plants. The most unique plant you'll find here is the giant flower called Rafflesia Arnolldi, which is considered to be the biggest flower in the whole world. It's a rare wonder as the flower takes 10 months to mature but blooms only for 15 days in a year, generally between July and September. Apart from this, you're sure to find plants and flowers here that you won't find in any other part of the world.

Ganting Grand Mosque

Ganting Grand Mosque

A predominant Sunni mosque, the Ganting Grand Mosque was constructed in 1805, making this one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia. What's so unique about the building is that involved many people from different cultural and religious backgrounds in its construction. The mosque was severely damaged in the earthquakes that took place in 2005 and 2009 but portrays a European neoclassic style of architecture and is a famous tourist spot in Padang. Other places you should visit are Pamutusan Island, Pulau Pagang and Pasumpahan Island.

Culture of Padang

The traditions in Indonesia differ from region to region and hence the culture of Padang is unique and distinct from the other traditions followed in Indonesia. The houses in Padang are generally rectangular in shape with a triangular, pointy roof. While this style of design can be seen in other parts of West Sumatra, it was in Padang that this style of architecture originated. The roofs, that are usually pointy are called Gojoang and are a way to show the people's gratitude to the Gods.

There are many tribes that live in Padang including the Minangkabau Tribe, Mentawai Tribe and Tanjung Tribe among others. When it comes to food, Padang takes full credit for the most famous dish called the Nasi Padang. It consists of meat, vegetables, rice and a few native spices that makes it extremely delicious.

One of the best resorts we’ve stayed in so far. We took 3d2n package with breakfast, lunch & din provided. Food given large quantity, esp seafood & service was fine. Stayed in Garden Villa chalet. Very clean & comfortable. Housekeeping crew came to clean, very prompt & quick. Clean & nice beach, about 20 paces away from room, as well as clean pool, about 10 paces from room. Surrounding well kept. Resort is, of course, not new but it’s more than adequate to unwind & relax. Came during off-peak season & feels like you have whole resort to yourself! Thank you to staff for memorable holiday.

So, you arrive at Minangkabau International Airport- the main airport of West Sumatra. This is the entry point for Padang, the capital of West Sumatra Province. The center of the city is more than 20 km south of the airport. When you travel to the center, you can notice that it is a colorful city with low buildings, full of life. And your eyes can’t skip the wonderful weird roofs of some of them, reminding you of buffalo horns!

Some geography

This is Padang , the administrative and cultural center of West Sumatra . It is established on the plain between the Barisan Mountains (the main mountain chain of Sumatra Island) and the coast of the Indian Ocean. The mountains, rising east and south of the city are covered by lush equatorial rainforest, and the coast is straight, with long sandy beaches.

An image of Padang- no high buildings

A curving river flows from the mountains and through the southern part of Padang. It is called Batang Arau River, and it “closes” the flat plain between the ocean and the mountains. South of it is a hilly area, and the coast is different- it is rugged, with promontories, bays, nearby islets, and small beaches.

Padang is located in a highly seismic area. The main rift between the Asian and Indian Ocean plates is here and the city is regularly hit by earthquakes. However, you don’t need to worry- the earthquakes are not stronger and not more than those in Tokyo, California, or Istanbul.

The ancient local people discovered the good properties of this place and created Padang. Let’s see how.

Some history

From ancient times, the lands around what is today Padang were covered by jungles and inhabited by Minangkabau people who lived in scattered villages beside the ocean coast and the rivers. Some local kingdoms and even empires controlled this area but with an insignificant presence.

In the 14th century, the land of Padang became a part of Pagaruyung Kingdom. Gradually, the villages around the Batang Arau River merged and established a trade harbor. And since the 16th century, the new village cluster, now called Padang, started its growth as a trade center with the neighboring kingdoms and the first Europeans. Pagaruyung kings ruled over Padang until 1663.

Traditional Minangkabau clothing

From 1663 to 1942, Padang has been mostly a part of the Dutch Indies, and only temporarily under the control of the British Empire. Actually, the Pagaruyung Kingdom still existed until the 19th century, but the authority of the Dutch was higher than that of the Pagaruyung kings.

As in the rest of Indonesia, it was the colonial period of Padang. The city continued growing, and more cultures were added to the local Minangkabau- the Dutch culture, and the Chinese, some of which migrated here. The best area where you can see the traces of them is beside the Batang Arau River, where you can spot some buildings in Dutch architecture, as well as the small Chinatown.

In 1942, Padang was conquered by the Japanese for three years. And when they left, the newly independent Indonesia was established. The city grew more and gradually developed into a modern metropolis. And due to the exotic destinations nearby, travelers started noticing Padang, although the tourism is still in an initial stage here.

Some culture

When you walk around the streets of Padang, you can see what the people look like. Almost all women wear hijab, and many men have beards and traditional Muslim caps. They are Minangkabau, and most of them are Muslim.

But although they are conservative, they are very friendly. It is totally normal when a foreigner (non-Indonesian-looking) walks around the streets to hear “Hello Sir”, from men and women. These people are also very helpful, and in general, you can feel safe and cozy in Padang.

Our journey to Padang

Padang was inevitably the first destination of our West Sumatra journey since we arrived by plane.

We came from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Padang was our starting point for visiting Mount Kerinci , the Mentawai Islands , and the area around Bukittinggi . It was not a circle route, so we had to back to Padang three times. And we used these opportunities to explore the most essential of this city.

Below are the eight best and most essential things to do in Padang. We tried seven of them (we skipped the eighth, visiting a nearby small island, because we had a similar experience in one of our next destinations- Sipora Island of Mentawai), and we can say that we got the taste of this nice and cozy city.

Things to do in Padang

Some of these things are related to certain spots, while other things you can try everywhere in Padang.

For first-timers: get familiar with the local life!

This is mostly for those who visit most of Indonesia for the first time. I mean, if you have already been to other neighboring cities in Sumatra, you probably would not see too much difference in Padang. But if you haven’t been to Indonesia yet, or you have been only to Bali or Jakarta, this experience is highly recommended.

You can try it everywhere in Padang, in every part of the city. But still, the best area to do it is in the center. Go to Pasar Raya and the area around Imam Bonjol Square. Here you can see just normal average streets, but also a nice park, a lively market, shops, restaurants, and more.

A local market street in Padang

So, walk around, buy some fruits from the market, do some shopping (you may not be a fan of shopping, but now this is about diving into the local life rather than shopping itself), or just relax in Imam Bonjol Square. Then, go to a café or a restaurant to see how everything looks and tastes!

Explore the Old part of Padang- Chinatown and the Dutch architecture

This is the historical and cultural core of Padang, the oldest part of the city. It is located north of the Batang Arau River. Here you can see not only an ordinary local urban area but also some old Dutch buildings, as well as the Chinese temples and halls of Padang’s Chinatown.

You can explore it on foot. The best route can start from the last railway station of the local train- Pulau Aie and can end at Mentawai Fast Harbour . It is about a 20 min walk. First, you can see one of the oldest mosques in Padang- Masjid Muhammadan, then you enter Chinatown. The highlights in this area are Kelenteng See Hin Kiong Temple, the Chinese halls, Pasar Tanah Kongsi (a local market), and some cafes and restaurants (if you want to try Chinese meals, go to Liong Hai restaurant).

From Chinatown, go south to the north bank of the Batang Arau River and just follow it. On the way you can see several old Dutch buildings like Gebouw van Padangsche Spaarbank, and Gebouw Handelsonderneming “Geo Wehry & Co”. And there are dozens of elegant cafes where you can relax.

A Chinese temple in Chinatown

On your way, you can’t skip the Siti Nurbaya Bridge. Although it is just a normal bridge over the river, with normal traffic on it, it is beautifully decorated with flowers and other ornaments, making it one of the local landmarks. Eventually, you will reach Mentaway Fast Harbour, the starting point for a journey to the fantastic Mentawai Islands. And beyond it is the coast of the Indian Ocean.

Visit Adityawarman Museum

This is the largest and most representative museum of history and culture in West Sumatra. And it is located again in the same area, not far from the Batang Arau River and the old town.

Adityawarman Museum is named after the first king of Pagaruyung Kingdom, who reigned over what is today West Sumatra in the 14th century. It is arranged in a splendid traditional Rumah Gadang house, with its typical buffalo-shaped roof and richly ornamented walls. The building, as well as other additional buildings containing more exhibitions behind it, is established in a beautiful garden with two rangkiangs (traditional rice granaries).

Adityawarman Museum

The museum contains several exhibitions. The largest and most important of them is located in the main Rumah Gadang building (Minangkabau house) which has two floors. It consists of historical and ethnographical relics, mostly from the Minangkabau people, as well as some from the Mentawai. There are also natural and technical exhibitions in the buildings behind the Rumah Gadang.

Entrance fee: 5000 IDR Working hours: from 8:30 to 17:00. Monday: closed.

Try the Minangkabau cuisine

The local Minangkabau cuisine is well-known in the whole of Indonesia and beyond. It is well-known for its heavy use of coconut milk and chili, something with curry. Here the people eat mostly rice and sometimes noodles as basic meals.

So, in general, the local food is spicy. Not too spicy, but enough to make a problem for those who can’t get used to eating spicy (anyway, you still can tell the waiter in the restaurant to not add spicy ingredients, and in most cases they understand, at least can make it much less spicy).

While you walk around Padang, you can see several types of restaurants and food corners. The most traditional one is where a lot of meals are exposed in buffet style, and you just choose from whatever you want. You can use a spoon and a fork, but if you want to be like a local, you have to eat directly with your fingers. And there is always a cup with water where you can wash your fingers.

Minangkabau food

Besides these, you can find more “normal” restaurants with a menu (instead of exposed meals). The most popular meals in such places are nasi goreng (spicy rice with egg), mie goreng (spicy noodles with egg), ayam goreng (chicken with rice), and more.

Spot the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra, one of the main landmarks of Padang

This is one of those projects in the world that are intentionally designed to serve as a grand symbol of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. In Padang, this is the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra- a religious center, and a landmark at the same time.

The Grand Mosque is located in a different place, a few km (miles) north of the old town. It was accomplished in 2014, and it is the second-largest mosque on the island of Sumatra. The mosque’s design is unique and is intended to present the traditional Minangkabau Rumah Gadang roof style. There is a large square-type garden around it.

The Grand Mosque of Sumatra

Today, it is an active religious center, but for those who are not Muslims, it is a landmark for visiting and exploring. It is a good spot for photos, and you can also enter inside (but with proper clothes, of course) and see its interior.

Enjoy the views of the beach

Padang has a long beach, a part of a long beach chain on the southwest coast of Sumatra Island. This is not a beach for swimming- no people are swimming or relaxing on the sand under an umbrella, like in the “classical” beaches. First, because the water is not so clean- several murky-water rivers flow into the ocean and much of the city water pollution flows with these waters too. And second- the local people still don’t have this “mass-beach” culture, partly due to their religion.

But the charm of the beaches of Padang is in the panoramic views. There is a road with an alley beside it, and it is perfect for a walk. If you walk to the south, on your left side will be the colorful urban park of Padang. And on your right side- the vast Indian Ocean. However, it is not “empty”- you can notice several small islets like spots before the horizon.

Padang Beach

And the most beautiful part of the beach is its southern end. It ends with the mouth of the Batang Arau River, and beyond it is a small hill covered with lush forest, with letters “PADANG” on it. And before the end of the beach, on your left side, you can see another landmark mosque. This is Masjid Al-Hakim, entirely in white color, built in 2020.

Go to the green south

What is south of the Batang Arau River? Here the landscape changes drastically. It is hilly, covered by equatorial rainforest, with a rugged coastline. The first hilly area is Puncak Gado-Gado, today used mainly as a park, with some villa and resort zones, and entertainment spots. The highest point of Gado-Gado is not too tall, but it reveals breathtaking views of Padang, the Indian Ocean, and the small islands in it. Today, it is a popular place for paragliding.

There are several beaches in this area (different than the long beach of Padang in the north). The most popular beach is Air Manis. Its coast is full of stalls, restaurants, and cafes, and it is well-known for ATV activities on the beach sand, especially during low tide.

Air Manis Beach

And there is a small famous spot on the beach, called Malin Kundang. It is a rock formation that looks like a prostrating man. According to a local legend, there was a son who disowned his poor mother and she cursed him to turn into a stone.

Finally, you can rent a motorboat to the nearby islands of Pisang Gadang and Pisang Ketek. They are small “tropical paradise” types of spots, great places for relaxation.

Float to one of the small islands offshore of Padang

I already mentioned Pisang Gadang and Pisang Ketek. But there are more than 15 small islands not far from Padang. You can see some of them from the long beach of Padang, while others are hidden in the south, beyond Gado-Gado.

These small islands are uninhabited, covered by jungle and coconut palms, usually with small beaches. They are flat, no more than 400-500 m wide and long, and are great spots to escape from the city. The waters around them are cleaner than at the beach of Padang, but still not crystal clear, because they are not too far from the mainland coast.

On an island near Padang

Some of these islands can be reached by a “boat taxi” from Air Manis Beach, or from Semen Padang Port. Those of them with resorts usually can be reached only by private resort boat, arranged only for the guests of the resort (like Pulau Sinyaru). And some islands like Pulau Pieh are completely uninhabited, but you can rent a boat to go there- the waters around Pulau Pieh are great for diving.

Useful tips

These are essentially the best things to do in Padang. And you can accomplish these activities for two days. However, you have to be prepared with some useful information- about transportation, accommodation, and other important details.

How to reach Padang and roam around it

Usually, travelers reach Padang from Minangkabau International Airport, as a traditional entry point. Although the airport is international, the only convenient connection with abroad is from Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia. There are also flights from Jeddah and Medina, Saudi Arabia, but obviously, they are mostly used by Muslims who go to Mecca, rather than foreign tourists.

Check for flights to Padang!

However, there are domestic flights from Jakarta, Batam, and some other cities in Sumatra. So, if you are previously in other parts of Indonesia (like Bali or West Java), you can use these flights.

Another option is to include Padang in your on-land journey- by bus, or by car, from Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, or other destinations in Sumatra. There are travel vans that operate between these cities and they are not expensive.

But let’s back to Minangkabau Airport. Once you get your Visa on arrival (unless you have already gotten it in advance), you go out. There are taxis and private drivers waiting for tourists outside. Needless to say, they are expensive. But there are cheaper options to go to the center of the city.

Minangkabau Airport

This is a very convenient system, well-developed in Padang, with cars or motorcycles. You have to download your Grab app on your phone in advance, point your destination, and book. Of course, you would need some internet, and if you haven’t bought your SIM card in advance, there is free WiFi at the airport. Use it! Usually, getting to the center by car is about 80,000 to 100,000 IDR (about 5-7 USD), and from 60,000 to 80,000 by motorcycle.

This is a cheap and very convenient option. A van takes passengers for 400 m from the airport to the first railway station. Then, the price to the center is only 10,000 IDR. There are only 5 trains per day but their schedule is calculated according to the arriving flights.

City transport

There are various types of local transport around Padang. Ojeks (motorcycle taxis) can be easily found everywhere, but for foreigners, they are always more expensive than Grab. Angkots (red vans with open doors) are very cheap and usually used only by locals unless you know their routes. Their price is between 5000 and 10,000 IDR. There are also several city buses but with limited route range.

But again, the most convenient way is Grab. There is another system, called Maxim, and it is similar to Grab, with the same prices. You can use both of them. Their prices are fixed by the app, but they would be always happy to get some tips. You can pay them in cash.

However, keep in mind that they seldom go to more remote areas like Air Manis- yes, they can take you there, but when you want to back to the center, you can’t find them but only local, more expensive ojeks.

Where to stay in Padang

Hotels in Padang are cheap. Even the most luxurious ones like Truntum Hotel offer rooms for only 50 USD per night. Keep in mind that the cheapest hotels are between 6 and 10 USD, but their quality can be very low. For example- dirty rooms, dirty toilets, out of the room, without hot water, etc.

You can easily find a lot of hotels on Booking or Agoda . The best area to stay is the old town, especially if you plan to go to the Mentawai Islands on the next day with the ferry from 7:00 a.m. This location is more touristy and convenient for exploring the area.

Check for accommodation in Padang on Booking!

Check for accommodations in Padang on Agoda!

The travel vans that go for Sungai Penuh (including Mount Kerinci and other destinations in the area) depart from Tabing, in the north of Padang, far from the old town. There are a few hotels in Tabing but with very low quality. So, since the travel vans can roam around the city before leaving it, you can ask the hotel manager in the reception to call them, and they can pass by your hotel to take you.

I would advise you to talk to them by Booking or Agoda messages before you arrive. I booked a hotel in Tabing (I thought it would be convenient for my next destination Mount Kerinci) on Agoda, but when I arrived, they told me that they no longer work with Agoda, so I had to pay twice. At least, the people from Agoda were so good to refund me the money.

Another option is Airbnb, which can allow you to get closer to the local people. However, it is usually more expensive than the hotels.

Keep in mind that most people in Padang (and in the whole of West Sumatra) can’t speak English. So, the only way to communicate with them, other than “body language” is to use Google Translate. And for that, you would need the Internet.

Getting a SIM card in Padang is not as easy as it looks. Have it in mind if you haven’t bought it online in advance! First, there is no SIM card shop in Minangkabau International Airport. You have to go to the center, and you can find some shops. But the cards they cell are usually problematic- you have to insert your Indonesian ID card (which obviously you don’t have if you are a foreigner!), and the whole guide on how to install it is in Indonesian.

So, the best way is to go to the central offices of the Indonesian mobile companies. The best of them is Telkomsel, and I bought a SIM card with 30GB of internet for 80,000 IDR. You can add an additional 30,000 to include minutes for talking on the phone.

The whole procedure was slow (I waited more than 2 hours in their office until the girl inputted all the necessary information and installed my SIM card). But it was worth the waiting- I had good quality Internet, and I could freely browse, look at the maps, and communicate with Google Translate everywhere, even in some remote areas in the next destinations of our trip later.

Padang is located very close to the Earth’s Equator, and it has an equatorial climate. It is a quite wet city, one of the wettest in Southeast Asia. There is not much difference between the “dry” and the “wet” seasons. Sometimes, it can rain a whole morning, sometimes- only about 30 min in the afternoon. And very seldom- without rain at all. Statistically, the least wet (I would not say “dry”) months are February and July.

This is Padang- a nice city full of life, in a beautiful tropical area. It is also full of local culture, with friendly people, and definitely worth exploring before you leave for the other exotic and adventurous destinations in West Sumatra.

Gunung Padang Megalithic Site Tour

Gunung Padang

For more information about Gunung Padang Megalith site, please read below content.

Stunning views surround the site, entrance fees, five terraces of the site, the meaning of gunung padang, a shocking discovery.

leaf divider

Lush mountainous regions surround the site. From the top surface to the North direction, you can see mount Gede-Pangrango on a clear weather. The view is adorable. Sometime, visitors are more impressed with the beautiful view than the mystery of the site.

The surrounding views, on the way to the site from the district main road is beautiful. There are villages, farms, rice fields, hills, and tea plantation. The tea plantation names are Gunung Manik and Gunung Rosa. They produce tea leaves for a famous ready-to-drink tea product in Indonesia, Teh Botol Sosro.

Gunung Rosa tea plantation, Cianjur

The accessing road is the village road. It is already widened, but still narrow and winding on some parts. A big bus cannot pass the road. The biggest vehicle that is able to pass the road is a mini or medium sized bus with capacity about 20 seats.

Government maintain the site. They charge a cheap ticket price. It is IDR 5,000/pax. But before you you reach the entrance gate, there is a tourism region entrance you need to enter with ticket price IDR 35,000.

Parking area in front of the entrance is too small. It cannot accommodate some cars, especially on the weekend and holiday. To solve this problem, local people made another parking area (Parking 2) on another place. It is about 500m before, and on the way to the entrance. Parking fee is vary, between IDR 5,000 – IDR 25,000 depend on the vehicle (motorcycle, car, or bus).

From Parking 2, you need to walk to the entrance for about 500m length. It is quite easy to walk for a walker because the road is very good. It is an asphalt road and not too steep. At Parking 2, some motorcycle taxis usually will offer their service to bring visitors up to the entrance, if visitors prefer not to walk up on their foot.

Government hire some local people to serve and guide visitors on site. But mostly they cannot speak English, except a few. They wear a distinctive local costume, normally in black color.

Cost Summary:

  • Region entrance: IDR 35,000
  • Car parking: IDR 10,000 – 15,000
  • Entrance tickets: IDR 5,000/pax
  • Local guide: IDR 150,000 – 200,000 for small group

Gunung Padang consists of five flat terraces: First terrace as the lowest level to Fifth Terrace as the highest level.

Climb Up from Entrance to First Terrace

To reach the first terrace from the entrance, you need to walk up through a stair with 400 steps that composed by andesite stones. It is the original stair with angle reaches 45 degree. It is not an easy walk for some people. To help visitors climbing up to the site, government installed an iron handle on each side of the stair. The handles are green. It helps you because you can hold on the handle when you are climbing up. But it looks not good, because it’s not naturally made by the ancient people.

Original stair to reach Gunung Padang

If you think the original stair is too hard for you, you can take another easier stair on your right side when you are entering the entrance. The government built this additional stair to help visitors who have difficulty in climbing the original stair. This stair is quite flat with much more steps. It goes through the side of the pyramid. You will enter the Second Terrace from the site if you pass this stair.

My recommendation for you, who usual to walk far is to use the original or main stair to reach the First Terrace. Then you can use the easier stair when going down. By using the main stair, you will reach the First Terrace and enter it at the middle of two standing andesite stones. It is like you are entering the pyramid from the main gate.

Gunung Padang is a type of megalithic site because constructed by many large stones. The word megalith come from two ancient Greek words: ‘Megas’ means Great, and ‘Litos’ means Stone.

Name Gunung Padang derived from local Sundanese language. Gunung means mountain, and Padang means light or enlightenment. So it means Mountain of Enlightenment.

Another meaning version of Padang is an acronym from three words:

  • “Pa” means place
  • “Da” means great
  • “Hyang” means ancestors

Those words become one word Padang which means the Great Place of Ancestors.

Actually it is not a mountain but a hill. But local people call it gunung, means mountain, because it is located on the hilltop like a mountain.

leaf divider

There are many prehistoric megalithic site in Indonesia. But the discovery of Gunung Padang made geologist and scientist around the world open their eyes. The discoveries shocked the world of sciences, archaeology, and anthropology because it could change our common knowledge about history. It is like a big elephant entering a crowded anthropology classroom. Two things that shocked the world is about the age and the size of the site.

The site has five terraces/layers. Each layer has each age. According to the radiocarbon dating test, the first layer could be up to approximately 3,500 upto 5,000 years old. Beta Analytic Laboratory Miami, Florida, USA tested the 5-12 m deep samples, and the result is the samples of the site dated between 14,500-25,000 BC.

The deeper samples obtained, the older their ages. It seems, the ancient people build it layer by layer. After first layer was constructed, the surface was manually buried beneath. Long years, even thousands years later, the process was repeated. They made new stone construction. Then buried it again beneath. the process was repeated until reached the current hilltop. How long they build the site and the reason to build it, are still mystery.

According to that result, the site is much older than the Great Pyramid of Giza which built in 2,551 BC. It is an evidence of a shockingly advanced ancient civilization. It also pass the most recent glacial period, which reminding us to the sinking Atlantis, a fictional wealth island or continent told by Plato, an Athenian philosopher in Ancient Greece period.

Size Does Matter

If we count the size using computer measurement scale, Gunung Padang is not megalithic site, but it is a gigalithic site. The top section alone has 5 terraces with 150 m long and 40 m wide. The entire construction, buried in the land is huge, much bigger compare to the surface area.

2011-2014 Investigation & Research

In 2011, Andi Arief, the President’s special staf for social and disaster assistance initiated to make a team consist of archaeologists to investigate and research the site sponsored by government. The current President at that time was Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudoyono.

The investigation use three methods: core drilling with radiocarbon dating, excavation, and geophysical scanning technologies.

Core Drilling & Radiocarbon Dating

The team drilled at several locations, penetrating upto 35 m below the surface to obtain some materials to be dated using radiocarbon. The dated of the samples were done by Indonesia National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) and US Beta Analytic Laboratory Miami.

In 2012, BATAN released result that paleosoil material from 3,5 m beneath the surface dated 4,700 BC. Then, Beta Analytic Miami released the result that the material from 5-12 m below the surfaced dated 14,500 -25,000 BC.

Those results generated many debate and controversy. Some scientist trust the result, but some other do not trust it. Radiocarbon dating itself is not a perfect method. But at least it is still better than human prediction.

Geophysics Scanning

Dr. Danny Hilman Natawidjaya, an Indonesian senior geologist lead the team to do geophysics scanning to Gunung Padang using georadar and geoelectric technology.

Three underground chambers were clearly visible upon the geoelectric scanning. The chambers located about 15 – 30 m below the surface 2. A chamber has big size, while 2 other chambers are small. The big chamber is look like a small house with roughly 9 m wide, 10 m long, and 5 m high.

The team excavated few areas in and around the site. Digging the area was very difficult. The soil surface was hard because it is ancient mortar soil made by human. The mortar consist of 45% iron minerals, 40% silica, and the rest are clay & carbon. It is a very good composition used for mortar. It is strongly predicted that the layers beneath were buried by human. The act of ancient people burying the site and then making a new structure on the surface is extremely astonishing. The team only dug surface until 4 m beneath. After excavation, the pits were filled up again to preserve the site.

During excavation, the team also discovered a hewn stone. The stone artefact is unusual. The stone is porous like a pumice, but heavy. The shape is similar to Kujang, a traditional blade of West Java. That’s why it is named Kujang Stone.

The Investigation was Halted

In 2014, the excavation and research sponsored by government was mysteriously halted. The fund was halted. In the same year, there is an indigenous entrepreneur offered 12 trillion rupiah, equal to 1 billion USD, plus the spending research cost for 60% stake in the site to maintain the site for tourism place. But the offer was refused.

History Of The Padang

Below is a brief history of The Padang , starting from the 14th Century when Sang Nila Utama fled from his enemies in Palembang and landed on the island of Temasek (which is now Singapore). This marks the beginning of its rapid and fascinating transformation to become one of the world's most modern metropolis.

The importance of The Padang goes back as far as the early 14th century. According to the Malay Annals, Sang Nila Utama, a Srivijayan prince from Palembang, spotted a strange but magnificent creature at The Padang after landing in Singapore (then called Temasek).

He was told that the creature was a singa (lion). However, this is most probably erroneously as there were no lions in Temasek at that time. Most likely, the creature that he saw was a tiger. Nevertheless, he felt it was a good sign and decided to establish a kingdom here and renamed the place Singapura.

Sang Nila Utama and his descendants ruled over Singapura somewhat unpeacefully as they faced threats from the Majapahit empire and to some extent,  the Siamese. Most of the time, they were able to fend off the threats and attacks until 1398 when the fifth and last ruler Parameswara lost the war and had to flee to Malacca to escape from the Majapahits.

After the Majapahit empire took over, Singapura gradually became a sleepy fishing village.

The Padang Sir Stamford Raffles Original Bronze Statue

The Padang Sir Stamford Raffles Original Bronze Statue

Singapura and The Padang started to gain prominence after Sir Stamford Raffles and William Farquhar landed in 1819 and managed to secure the area to be part of the Sepoy Lines that housed Indian Troops.

Initially, The Padang was known by many names: The Cantonment, The Plain, and The Esplanade, before settling for The Padang which lasted till this day.

Raffles wanted the north bank of the Singapore River to be used for civic and public purposes and left instructions for William Farquhar, the first Resident of Singapore.

Farquhar did not exactly follow the script and allowed Europeans to build their private residences on the fringe of the Padang. This annoyed Raffles when he came back to Singapore and the duo's relationship deteriorated.

The original eight-foot-tall (2.4 m) Raffles dark bronze statue used to be located at The Padang when it was first unveiled on 27 June 1887 in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign.

It sat at The Padang until 1919 when it had to be relocated because it was often unceremoniously hit by flying footballs during games. Also, spectators at The Padang liked to sit at its base while viewing games. Currently, the statue has been relocated close to the Victoria Memorial Hall.

In the 19th century right up to WW2, The Padang was mainly used for recreational and entertainment purposes. These include New Year’s celebrations, dance performances, soccer, and cricket matches. The celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign was also held there on 27 and 28 June 1887.

During the Japanese Occupation from 1942-45, The Padang served as a parade and ceremonial ground as a display of Japan's imperial power. The Japanese also used it to interrogate European prisoners-of-war and civilians before they were marched to Changi and other detention camps.

The situation at The Padang turned for the better, albeit briefly, after the Japanese surrender and victory parades were held there.

Later, The Padang started to see confrontations, rallies, and protests as the local population was unhappy with the British capitulation during the Second World War, and The Padang was big enough for big crowds to gather.

There were also riots, including the infamous Maria Hertogh racial riots in 1950. The riots were sparked by a custody battle over the then 13-year-old girl, who was born to a Dutch-Eurasian Roman Catholic family, but raised by a Malay Muslim family during World War II.

The riots lasted for three days and resulted in the deaths of 18 people and the injury of 173 others.

When the People Action Party (PAP) won its first general election in 1959 after winning 43 out of 51 seats, 50,000 supporters turned up at The Padang on 3 June 1959 for its victory rally.

After Singapore merged with Malaya to form Malaysia on 16 September 1963, Lee Kuan Yew also addressed the crowd at The Padang from the City Hall Steps. The proclamation was delivered with emotion and tears: PAP delivered what it promised in the 1959 general election with the merger to achieve independence.

The Padang also bears witness to the appointment of Singapore’s first President, Yusof bin Ishak in 1959. After Singapore gained independence, the site was used regularly for National Day Parade celebrations from 1966-75.

The Padang Shared Field

Unfortunately, the merger with Malaysia did not work out well and Singapore was left to fend for itself as a sovereign state on 9 August 1965.

On 9 August 1966, The Padang witnessed Singapore's first National Day Parade. The choice of The Padang to hold National Day Parades continued annually until 1974 when other venues were used.

Currently, The Padang is only used sparingly for the Singapore National Day celebration - once every five years. The last time the Padang was used to celebrate National Day was in 2019 to celebrate Singapore's bicentennial edition (200 years after Sir Stamford Raffles's founding).

On weekends, The Padang is used for soccer and rugby practices.

Historical Buildings At The Padang

When one mentioned The Padang, the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) and Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) will come to mind as they are located on the grounds of The Padang. It is not possible to disentangle these two clubs from The Padang as they have a long association with its history.

The Padang Singapore Cricket Club

Singapore Cricket Club

Located at the southern end (near Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall) of The Pandang is Singapore Cricket Club (SCC ). It was first established in 1853 by 28 members, making it one of the oldest social clubs in Singapore.

SCC was initially set up for white European businessmen but later membership included prominent government figures like the Governors of the Straits Settlements.

Membership grew steadily until the two world wars, which led to the club being closed temporarily during WWII, and was used by the Japanese for meetings.

Although it started as a cricket club, it has grown to include other sporting activities like athletics, soccer, rugby, and tennis. These sports are very much at the core of its activities today.

The clubhouse started off humbly in 1884 with just a wooden-hut pavilion before more structures and improvements were made.  Today, the clubhouse is modern-looking and offers fine dining and local fare cuisines.

Its sporting facilities include a bowls green, gymnasium, tennis and squash courts, as well as The Padang which was used for field sports. Altogether, it promotes thirteen different field and court sports on its premises, and these include squash, netball, and tennis besides rugby, soccer, cricket, etc…

SCC also hosts the prestigious Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens annually. The event is one of the premier international club tournaments in Asia, involving teams from around the world.

The trophy for the tournament, the Ablitt Cup, is named after Mr Bernard E Ablitt who was Convenor of the SCC Rugby Section from 1931-2 and President of the club from 1938-9.

The Padang - Singapore Recreation Club

On the opposite end of SCC is the Singapore Recreation Club (SRC). It is on the northern end (near Tan Kim Seng Fountain) of The Padang. SCC was founded in 1883 by thirty young Eurasian cricketers to promote sports. During its founding, SRC only admitted Eurasian men.

SRC's original location was a building on Waterloo Street, but it was later moved to The Padang after the construction of a simple pavilion in 1885. A second and grander pavilion was constructed and opened in 1905 due to the increasing membership. It was a two-storey building with servants' quarters, billiards, reading, and even a ladies' room.

During the Japanese occupation, SCC was initially used as a registration centre. Those with British and Dutch parentage were marched to camps in Changi from The Padang in front of SRC. Later SRC served as an outpatient hospital for the Japanese during the war.

The current clubhouse was unveiled in 1997 after fundraising activities by its members. Today, SRC has more than 7,000 members and it continues to promote all sorts of sporting, recreational, and social activities.

Although The Padang may just be a big plain field and there is nothing much to see, except when it hosts some sporting activities, it is still worth a trip there for its historical significance. It is centrally located in the Civic District, which is also home to other attractions such as National Gallery Singapore , Fort Canning Park , and St Andrew's Cathedral .

Do check out the sporting calendars and time your visit to coincide with an international sporting event if you are a sports fan.

But, if you are looking for some fun places to visit with your kids, here is a list of 10 family-friendly places to consider.
