Visiting the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville: America’s Oldest Brewery
This is a guest post brought to you by Lance from TravelAddicts.net .
Among beer aficionados, Yuengling Brewery occupies a special place: it is America’s Oldest Brewery. They have been brewing continuously since 1829 – even through the American Prohibition (they produced medicinal porters).
Yuengling also serves a growing regional area – only 21 states. That kind of selective distribution brings with it an air of exclusivity and a tremendous desire to see what the fuss is about. And Yuengling is most definitely worth the fuss.
Coming up Mahantongo Street from downtown Pottsville, you happen on the two idyllic brick buildings housing Yuengling Brewery.
If you have toured large breweries, you begin to wonder, is this it? It’s cute, but it’s also really small. There’s no visitor center. There’s no security office. There isn’t even a parking lot (it’s all street parking; $0.25 per hour). What there is: the most authentic brewery we’ve ever seen.
As you walk into the brewery, you enter through one of the production rooms and follow the signs to the gift shop. The free tours leave from here either twice a day (weekdays) or three times per day (weekends). Specific tour times are noted on the brewery website and include a special summer schedule.
The tour length is approximately 75 minutes, which includes a tasting of two beverages (a non-alcoholic option is available for those who don’t want to imbibe).
The tour takes you into the brewhouse where they explain the Yuengling beer-making process. You will also see the bottling process in a second building.
That’s all interesting, but the highlight of the tour is the underground cave where Yuengling used to store their beer. It is carved several hundred feet back into the mountain. It is wet and cold and perfect for aging beer. During Prohibition, the Feds were concerned about bootlegging and walled off the cave with bricks – a small portion of the original wall still remains.
After our tour, our fantastic tour guide, Vickie, offered us samples of the brews. The brewery maintains a modest gift shop selling T-shirts and barware, but you can also purchase reproductions of their classic advertising through the years.
The walls of the gift shop also display artifacts from the company history. And if you are quiet and there at the right time of day, turn your head up to the ceiling and listen to the grain flowing the black pipes on its way to becoming beer.
If you’ve visited other breweries , we can assure you you’ve never visited one quite like the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

We visited way back in 1989. Unless memory is not serving me well, were there at one time muraled walls somewhere? Also is Fritz still around?
Yuengling now has a 2nd brewery in Tampa, FL. (previously Bud/Bush and Schlitz). It’s quite a popular beer here as well, but I suspect a lot is shipped north.

May 29, 2018 Pretty Much a Press Release
D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. , America’s oldest still operating brewery, recently announced new extended hours, events and promotions as part of its free brewery tour and tastings in Pottsville, Pa., this summer. Travelers and beer enthusiasts are invited to experience American brewing history — including hand-dug fermentation caves that were used for storage before refrigeration — and explore the 189-year-old brewery that has produced Yuengling beer through times of peace, prosperity and near beer during Prohibition. The Yuengling brewery is on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Summer is a busy travel season and we want to offer our loyal fans more opportunities and incentives to visit us at the brewery,” said Debbie Yuengling, sixth generation daughter, D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. “We’re always looking for ways to enhance our brewery tour experience. Extended hours, combined with several exciting summer promotions and events, are important, customer-focused improvements that will make visiting our Pottsville brewery easier and more exciting than ever.”
Summer promotion
Starting in June as part of Yuengling’s American Summer Adventure Promotion, visitors will have a chance to win fun prizes and branded swag all summer-long by posting a photo of their brewery tour experience using #YuenglingBrewTour and tagging Yuengling on social media. A winner will be chosen everyday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Guests can also purchase memorabilia at the newly relocated and expanded gift shop. Yuengling will announce other promotions via social media throughout the summer.
Fans can enter for a chance to win tickets for a private Meet & Greet with Chris Martin IV, owner of Martin Guitar and listen to acoustic entertainment by Martin artist Craig Thatcher in mid-June at the Yuengling Brewery. Fans are encouraged to follow Yuengling on its social media channels for their chance to win exclusive tickets and learn more about additional event announcements.
Special events
On June 20, Yuengling will celebrate National American Eagle Day to pay homage to the iconic eagle featured on its label since 1829 and in its new brand campaign Spread Your Wings. From 12:30-1:30 p.m., visitors will see a real, live bald eagle at the brewery, talk to an eagle handler from the Carbon County Environmental Education Center and learn more about the history of the iconic bald eagle.
In addition to our historic Yuengling beer aging caves, brewhouse and bottling shop, this summer, the tour will feature a number of new social media selfie spots including a Yuengling beer throne and an iconic Spread Your Wings wall. Be sure to check them out on the tour route.
Yuengling is proud to support families of veterans by partnering with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). Twenty percent of the Lagers for Heroes retail merchandise sales are being donated to TAPS through May 31.

Don’t Miss the Ever Satisfying Yuengling Brewery Tour
Yuengling lager. Ahh yes, deliciousness in a can. We were recently traveling through Pennsylvania looking for some cool things to do when we came across the Yuengling Brewery Tour which is the oldest brewery in America. Sign. Me. Up.
I’ve become a big fan of this rich amber colored beer ever since we started visiting Bryanna’s grandparents in Florida. It was always on tap at the restaurants and bars we went to, so I figured it was southern beer. Little did I know it was a northerner, just like me. I like it so much in fact, I’m drinking one right now. Hey, when in Rome..or writing about Rome…or something like that.
The brewery is located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and the streets in the town are so sloped you have to lean forward when walking up hill. It’s on the side of a mountain, which I’ll talk about in a bit and it’s located next to a church, which I find ironically awesome.

Yuengling Brewery Tour
Alright, enough already, on with the tour. Our guide was a young college student that was pretty soft spoken, but he definitely knew his stuff regarding the beer, the brewery, and their history. We started by going down to the basement. And by basement, I basically mean cave. We’re talking Goonies here.
Our guide explained the brewery was built in this location so they could mine into the base of the mountain it was next to. It served as the perfect refrigerator for brewing and storing their beer. It stays at a consistent 54 degrees all year round. It also had a stream of water coming into the basement from the mountain. Yuengling actually used this water in their brew early on before switching over to city water.
Along one full side of the long hall in the basement was a thick cinder block wall. Our tour guide did a quick quiz on what that was for. There were a lot of guesses: securing the beer, reinforcing the ceiling. Well, it was put up by good old Uncle Sam during prohibition. The entire brewing room was sealed off. Our guide said the first shipment of beer was put on the truck and out for delivery at 12:01am the day prohibition was lifted, which is very curious since it takes 24-28 days to brew a batch 🙂
We then went upstairs and got a good look at the giant kettles used in all the phases of brewing. Turns out this brewery is very small compared to their larger brewery in Tampa.
After seeing this, we went to the bottling room. This giant room was filled with conveyer belts all jammed with empty beer bottles waiting for the next shift. We visited on a Saturday, so production was stopped, but if you come during the week, you can see this all in motion during the Yuengling Brewery Tour, which would be very cool.
The last stop on the tour, and probably the best part, the tasting in The Rathskeller tavern! They have all of their brews on tap, including a seasonal brew and you get to choose 2 to try. You get an 8-ounce cup and your guide switches over to bartender mode. We had 6 kids with us and they have a local root beer on tap for them. My little tip for all the parents out there- I’d say 1 glass of root beer is quite enough for a little one, and since you wouldn’t want their second one to go to waste….well, you catch my drift.
So you finish up the tour by the gift shop where we picked up a few things. Overall it was a great tour that I would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the area. Check out Yuengling’s website for more information on the tours and directions to the brewery www.yuengling.com .
Few things to take note of:
- The Yuengling Brewery Tour runs every hour from about 10am until 1pm Monday through Saturday. It is all first-come, first-serve, so plan on getting there early enough to make a tour. We arrived at about 10am and just made it into the 11am tour. Check their website for specific dates and times www.yuengling.com/breweries/pottsville/ .
- Narrow, steep hills getting to the brewery. No problem in a car, but definitely plan on leaving your rig elsewhere. The folks at the brewery said we could bring our rig and park it on the street during the tour, but after going there, I would not recommend this at all.
- Be sure to wear close toed shoes. They enforce this pretty strictly.
- Bring your camera. They have no restrictions on pictures/flash/etc. Take advantage of this since most tours don’t allow it.
- Bring your id. For the tasting you’ll have to show you’re 21 or older.
- Try to go on a week day. Seeing everything in motion would be pretty cool.

Review: Yuengling Brewery Tour

Tour America’s oldest brewery at the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pa. The tour offers guests a walk-through of the historic, original brewery building with a few modern additions.
The tour begins by taking visitors through the older sections of the brewery, including the caves used to store beer before modern refrigeration methods. There are also Prohibition-era brick walls from when the government made Yuengling close them off. Your tour guide will share how the brewery survived the Prohibition, and how the Yuengling creamy came to be. The tour guide I had was informative and definitely not dry telling the stories.
A photo posted by Cody Darrah (@codydarrah) on Nov 13, 2016 at 12:48pm PST
Afterward, you will move on to view the brew kettles along with some murals that tell the story of the brewery’s past. There is also a stop at the Rathskeller bar before finally ending up at the bottling and canning line. After telling us about the bottling and canning process, our tour guide offered to take slow motion videos of the production line on visitor’s phones, especially the ones who were not particularly tech savvy. She also offered to take photos of our group, and for any of us in front of the brewery building.
The tour takes about 45 minutes depending on questions asked and the speed of the tour guide. After the tour, there is a tasting available with the option to purchase packaged beer and growlers. Your tour guide will now become your bartender. The guides were great at helping guests decide what to try depending on personal tastes.

The tasting bar is connected to the gift shop and small museum, which is currently underway. As a fan of Yuengling, I found the tour entertaining and engaging without too much focus on the beer-making process. Your guide will ask about your knowledge of the beer-making process, and the history of beer and Prohibition so you are not hearing things repeated that your group has a handle on. While it is a small building compared to modern-day breweries, there is a lot of history to uncover and plenty to drink.

Awesome (free) tour with a free tasting at the end. The history is fascinating and the tour is just the right amount of time. I've gone twice and learned something new even the second time. The tour does have quite a few stairs, but they will warn you ahead of time and give you a chance to exit if you are not wanting to continue. Additionally, there is plenty of street parking around the brewery.I can't wait for Yuengling to make it to Minnesota.
Thanks to a friend of mine on Yelp, I discovered the Yuengling Brewery and it's tour. My wife and I took the 2 hour drive from NJ this weekend with my 2 stepsons, one of which just turned 21. We had a really fun time! Yuengling does an excellent job in the visitor's center of detailing it's history, going back to 1829. The tour lasts roughly one hour and is free. Our tour guide did a great job of explaining each different section of the brewery. You start by walking into these caves which were built almost 200 years ago! It's fascinating to see the process of brewing beer that long ago. There are also brick walls put up by the government at the start of Prohibition. During that time Yuengling used the plant to become a creamery selling ice cream. The history in the building is amazing! Maybe the best part for some, is at the end when you get samples of 2 different beers. We learned during the tour that there are a few beers only sold in PA. I got one of those, a Chesterfield, along with a Black & Tan. We also purchased a large growler of B&T to take home. The gift shop here has everything you could ever want from Yuengling. We brought home shirts, sweater, glasses, you name it! Many thanks to Eloy for letting us know about this place!

D.G. Yuengling & Son is a historic brewery that opened in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829. It was founded by German immigrant David Gottlieb Yuengling (anglicized from "Jüngling"). After arriving from Aldingen, Germany in 1828, David opened the "Eagle Brewery" on Centre Street in Pottsville a year later. The brewery burned down in 1831, and a new facility was built at its current location on Mahantongo Street. After David's son Frederick joined the company in 1873, the brewery was renamed "D.G. Yuengling & Son". Although the name changed, the bald eagle has continued to be the brewery's emblem. During Prohibition, all beer production ceased with the exception of their Porter (which was used for medicinal purposes) and "near beers" (beer with a 0.5% ABV or less). The company also began manufacturing ice cream to stay in business. Beer production resumed once Prohibition ended. Since 1985, the company has been run by 5th generation owner Richard Yuengling Jr. His four daughters are set to take over once he retires. In addition to Pottsville, Yuengling also has production facilities in nearby Mill Creek as well as Tampa (FL). Yuengling is the oldest operating brewery in the United States and sixth largest overall. My family and I recently visited the Yuengling Brewery while we were staying nearby in the Poconos. Touring the brewery has been on my bucket list for some time. Although Yuengling isn't in my Top 10 favorite breweries (or even Top 25 for that matter), I must give them credit for staying family-owned and independent for nearly 200 years and for consistently producing a reasonably-priced quality beer. Our tour started in the visitor center, which is housed in the old creamery building across the street from the main building. From there we crossed the street and saw the old hand-dug beer caves where beer was stored in the days before electricity and refrigeration. We then worked our way upstairs to the brew system and production line. Our guide explained that 90% of all canned Yuengling beer is still produced in Pottsville. Our tour ended at the taproom in the visitor center. Beers we sampled included "Premium Beer" (Pilsner), "Golden Pilsner", "Dark Brewed Porter" and "Bongo Fizz" (Fruit Beer). The latter (brewed with mangos) was our favorite and we purchased a case to take home. This was probably the coolest brewery tour we've ever been on; a real living history lesson!

In 2021, Becky and I visited friends in Ohio. That is where I learned of this delicious beer that is Yuengling. Once I discovered how much I loved Yuengling Lager, I would order it everywhere we went while in Ohio. I'd gleefully yell it out, "Yuengling"! Yuengling quickly became one of my all-time favorite beers! I carefully tucked 12 cans into my suitcase so I could have some when I arrived back home in San Diego. Our friends have visited us in San Diego four times since our visit to Ohio. They've brought Yuengling to me every time. Awesome friends indeed! Why had I never heard of Yuengling? Why must I smuggle it in my suitcase and they in theirs? I'll tell you why. Founded in Pottsville, PA, Yuengling is the oldest brewery in America. They've been in existence since 1829. One would think that after 193 years they would have figured out distribution by now. Nope. So far they've only managed to make it as far west as Texas. C'mon Yuengling! Please make it to California before your 200th anniversary!
No more until April when our Ohio friends visit again.
First of all we can't get Yuengling on the west coast . Hopefully soon. And as for the tour of the facility was an experience! Just supper and got to try samples at the end and I loved the black and tan. Now the million dollar question... will you (hopefully soon) be on the west coast ?????

Our visit to Yuengling brewery was fantastic. We took the free tour and our guide was excellent. Stepping into the brewery and the tunnels is like stepping way back in history. The brewery is the oldest brewery in the U.S, and if only the walls could talk, you wonder what they would say. We walked through the tunnels, saw the bottling area, and the upper floor. It was well worth the time. Mr. B was in heaven. I will say, there are lots of stairs to climb so if you have mobility issues, it could be a problem. We didn't see an elevator, so I would ask before taking the tour. The gift store is large and filled with everything Yuengling, well worth the visit if you don't have time for the tour. After the tour we ended in the tasting room and were given two samples each. The tasting room is only for guests on the tour. You can't go in and taste unless you do the tour. Which isn't a problem, this way they can control the crowds. I tried the Raging Eagle Mango and Flight. The Flight beer is a light beer, the Raging Eagle Mango was more my style. I enjoyed it very much. There is a slight sweetness from the mango. Mr. B went with the dark brewed porter and of course had to try the seasonal special. Hershey's Chocolate Porter. The brewery has partnered with Hershey's to create this special beer. It was delicious and not real chocolate forward, just a rich beer with a finish of light chocolate. Our tour guide gave me just a sip of the Oktoberfest and it too was really nice. It was a fun afternoon of touring the brewery, tasting and shopping for gifts to bring home.

Definitely the place to go. First time visiting America's oldest brewery, and was definitely not disappointed. The tour guide was very helpful and knowledgeable about the brewery and the history behind it. Would highly recommend visiting this place..
Cannot miss the opportunity to tour the oldest craft brewery in the U.S. A must see if you are near Pottsville.

Great tour with some fun history facts and great exclusive beer samples. I've done many brewery tours across America and this was the only one that's been one of the best I've been on. Our tour guide was funny and knew her stuff. It was very cool to see where it all started. Great gift shop as well!
An awesome visit! My inner history nerd and a beer nerd came together at yeungling. The tour was fantastic and took you into their underground caves. You also learned some about the brewery over prohibition and yeungling's role in the development of area. Yeungling's tour also gave you free tastings and if you chose to buy a pint it was only $3. Their museum and gift shop were also very interesting and priced fairly with good quality merch. Definitely worth visiting as a destination. Is there better beer in the world, yes but visiting Yeungling is a genuine treat and a living history lesson that finishes with a beer.

INFORMATIVE LOCAL BREWERY TOUR
Looking for something to do in Tampa which is complimentary and offers tasting samples? Yuengling Brewery offers free tours of their Brew Factory many times a day so, the Kid and I were in! Yuengling IS the oldest Brewery in the US! It originally began in Pottsville, Pa in 1829, that's 191 years old. YEP! It beats out it's Budweiser, the competition by several years. BW was "born" in 1852. The Eagle is original to Yuengling and when BW decided to sue Yuengling for the Eagle copyright, BW lost. Back to the tour. The tour is very casual but, organized. Meet in the Guest Center, sign in the guest book, grab a wristband and then wait for the tour to begin. While waiting, one can browse the Gift Shop, walk the grounds or enjoy a beer before the Tour. A short oral presentation along with a short film is given at the beginning of the tour. You will be split into smaller groups (no more than 20 people) so, you can hear the Guide's complete description as you move from building to building. HEADS UP: NO photos are allowed in the interior except for the Guest Center. Yuengling is very sensitive to their formula and processing. It's ok, cause you can still take some great exterior photos. The tour last for about 90 minutes. There are stairs and it's all walking so, wear comfy shoes. Parking is also FREE. Q & A's are encouraged! After the tour, you can enjoy popcorn and 2 complimentary samples back at the Guest Center. Great 1st date!
The rums were great even the coconut one which I definitely was ready to not like being I don't usually like coconut but the coconut flavor wasn't over bearing. I liked their rums so much I ended up buying 6 bottles when I only planned on buying 1 but it was too hard for me to choose only 1
Interesting tour and then the sampling room. Try different Yuengling brews, but do it quickly. You get about 10 minutes before they close uo for the next tour group!
Our birthday visit was nothing short of amazing. The tour alone was astounding but our tour guide put the whole experience on another level! Vickie lord is a bright light of amazing facts and corky jokes , nothing short of a perfect time, thank you yuengling, you all really made our friends birthday 15/10
Reserve your tour in advance to guarantee your time. If not, you'll sit in the Tasting Room, waiting for the next available tour. Not a bad strategy because you can sample the fine beer selection fresh from the tap (or bottle). We've visited on Fridays when brewing activities are slow (not much production going on), but then you get to spend more time in the Tasting Room. All tour guides are very nice, efficiency minded, and very well informed about Yuengling history and products. This brewery is better than any micro-brewery or craft brewery in Tampa.
It seems the tours are currently halted while they do some upgrades so be sure to check the website before arriving. When we went before the tour was free and kids were welcome on the tour. The tour guide was fun and very knowledgeable. We got firsthand answers to questions. Adults can get free samples after the tour. Rumor has it they’re adding a hotel, probably a beer garden and maybe other things on the existing property. So excited about what is to come. This is very close to Busch Gardens, USF, MOSI or the Lowry Park Zoo so it can easily be paired with the day’s activities.
