History of Telangana | Telangana Tourism

History of Telangana | Telangana Tourism

Telangana’s history has been shaped by many great dynasties like the Mauryas, Satvahanas, Chalukyas and Kakatiyas. The region came under the dominion of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14 th century, Bahmani Sultanate in the 15 th century and Qutb Shahis in the 16 th century. The Qutb Shahi kingdom fell into the hands of the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb in 1687.

In 1712, Qamar-ud-din Khan became the administrator (Nizam-ul-Mulk) of the region. Later, he took the name Asaf Jah, laying the foundation of what came to be known as the Asaf Jahi dynasty. He named the region, Hyderabad Deccan, and his lineage came to be known as the Nizams of Hyderabad. When the colonial powers established their control over the country, the Nizams obtained their support and kept ruling Hyderabad under their protection.

After India’s freedom, the then Nizam wanted Hyderabad State to remain independent. But the Indian Government annexed it in 1948 with ‘Operation Polo’. In 1956, Telangana region was combined with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh . In the years that followed, there were many major movements to revoke the merger. Consequently, the state of Telangana was officially formed from the northwest part of Andhra Pradesh on 2 nd June, 2014.

Geography & Climate

Telangana shares its border with Chhattisgarh in the east, Andhra Pradesh in the south and east, Karnataka in the west, and Maharashtra in the north. Located on the Deccan Plateau, the state’s landscape is dotted with mountain ranges, hills, and dense forests. Krishna and Godavari are the two major rivers flowing through the state.

The climate of Telangana is hot and dry. Summers are scorching hot while winters are mild and dry. The best time to visit Telangana is between September and March.

EPIC Detroit Travel Guide – Written by a Local (2024)

Also known as Motor City, Hockeytown, the D, Motown, and Detroit Rock City, Detroit is a fascinating city with a turbulent history and a bright future.

It’s also well off the beaten path, as most travelers to the States flock to coastal cities and, to be blunt, many Americans actively avoid Detroit. BUT, if you are an intrepid adventurer ready for a unique experience, then I highly recommend you travel to Detroit.

In this Detroit travel guide, you’re going to learn everything you need to have a fantastic time in the D.

While there are still sketchy areas – as there are in any major American city – the city center has undergone a major renaissance in the last decade. So long as you use common sense and follow the advice of locals, you’ll be just fine exploring downtown Detroit.

There’s plenty to see and do in Detroit to keep you busy for a few days, and you’ll be able to do so at a fraction of the price in places like NYC or LA.

Why Visit Detroit?

3-day itinerary for a weekend in detroit, 10 top things to do in detroit, backpacker accommodation in detroit, backpacking detroit travel costs, best time to travel to detroit, staying safe in detroit, how to get into and around detroit, working and volunteering in detroit, nightlife in detroit, faqs about traveling in detroit, final advice before visiting detroit.

Detroit is usually left off of most USA trip itineraries, but that’s a mistake. This Midwestern city has plenty to entertain travelers and the fact that it’s free from mass tourism is yet another plus.

Like all places in the US , Detroit has a few must-sees that no traveler should miss. I highly recommend trying to make it to a few of these, spots but don’t forget to get off the beaten path too. Detroit has a unique energy and is filled with plenty of museums, exhibits, and other cool spaces that will appeal to all kinds of adventurers.

D-Town as its called is also quite affordable compared to the likes of Chicago or NYC, which is yet another great benefit to budget travelers. With plenty of great things to eat, a whole lot of musical history, and a revitalized Downtown, Detroit is one of those places that you’ll be so glad you took a chance on. ….As long as you visit in summer that is!

What Are The Major Attractions in Detroit?

Like all places in the US , Detroit has a few must-sees that no traveler should miss. I highly recommend trying to make it to a few of these, spots but don’t forget to get off the beaten path too.

How Long Should You Spend in Detroit?

Compared to other US cities, Detroit isn’t exactly massive. This means you can see and do a lot in a relatively short amount of time, making a weekend in Detroit more than doable.

Considering all this, 3 days in D-Town is the ideal amount of time to get acquainted with the city.

Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, it’s time to plan a kickass itinerary for 3 days in Detroit. Read below for a day-by-day Detroit travel guide!

Day One in Detroit: Get acquainted with downtown

Day One in Detroit

On your first day in Detroit, the best thing to do is get acquainted with the downtown area.

Whether you choose to DIY or join a group, you’ll get to see major highlights of Downtown, such as Hart Plaza , the Spirit of Detroit , the Renaissance Center, and more.

After a few hours of walking around and taking in the sights of Motown, you’re sure to be hungry. It’s time to try the “ Coney Challenge ” that was made famous on TV shows such as Man vs. Food.

A Coney Island dog is a staple in the D, and there are two restaurants right next door to each other cooking them up downtown.

Head into both American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island to try the classic hot dog, which is smothered in chili, diced onions, and mustard. I won’t tell you which one I prefer; I’ll let you decide for yourself! You really can’t go wrong with a Detroit Coney dog.

Even if you passed through on your walking tour, it’s worth visiting the Campus Martius Park again, especially if it’s a nice day. There’s an artificial beach here, so locals love coming down on their lunch break to get some fresh air and relax.

As far as where to go for dinner and possibly nightlife, I recommend checking out the Greektown area on your first night in Detroit. Order up some saganaki – a delicious appetizer of fried cheese that comes to your table on fire – and hear your waiter yell “Opa!”

There are tons of bars, restaurants, and even a casino in Greektown, so you can easily keep yourself entertained here all night.

Day Two in Detroit: Dive into the arts

Day Two in Detroit

For your 2nd day in Detroit, you should dive right into the city’s incredible art scene. For today’s art-filled adventure, you may want to consider renting a bicycle.

First up, head to the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts). Be sure you have a good breakfast and a nice strong cup of coffee because you’ll be in there for several hours. This museum has over 100 galleries full of art from all over the world, stretching from ancient to modern times.

Next up, hop on your bike and pedal over to the Eastern Market . Hopefully, you’re visiting on a weekend because the market is bustling with activity. Even though you’re probably not shopping for groceries, it’s a fantastic place to explore for a while.

From here, it’s about a 10-minute ride over to the Heidelberg Project . This incredible outdoor art project has transformed a neighborhood for the better. Exploring the colorful streets here with your camera in hand is definitely one of the highlights of visiting Detroit.

Day Three in Detroit: Hitsville, USA

Day Three in Detroit

For your third and final day in Detroit, it’s time to explore the city’s musical past and present. Kick things off with a visit to the Motown Museum , which is often referred to as Hitsville, USA.

See the studio where legends such as Marvin Gaye and the Jackson 5 recorded some of their most famous songs. Tickets are sold on a first-come-first-serve basis, so it’s best to book online ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Next up, take a stroll along the Detroit River Walk , which is a famous landmark of the city.

To get ready for your last night out in Detroit Rock City, head to Midtown to hit up one of the many bars for a solid pre-game.

While in Michigan, one must drink Michigan beer. Order a pint of Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, which is not only my personal favorite but also the best beer in America for 2018.

With a little buzz on, it’s time to check out some live music. Any good Detroit travel guide will tell you to check out the Fox Theatre . This historic venue is a beautiful place to see a show, so check their schedule and see what’s playing during your visit.

Spending More Time in Detroit?

As I said, you can see a lot of Detroit in just three days! However, if you’ve got a little extra time on your hands, give this city a little more of it. There’s plenty more to see and do in and around Detroit with an extra day or two:

Niagara Falls in June travel from detroit

  • Visit the Detroit Public Library : Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1865 library has a stunning design and thousands upon thousands of books.
  • Take a Day Trip to Niagara Falls : Want to visit Canada ? You can by way of Niagara Falls, which can be reached fairly easily from Detroit if you leave early!
  • Try Making Pottery : Pewabic Pottery was founded in 1903, and today features exhibits, galleries, tours, and workshops. Admission also happens to be free!
  • Eight Mile Wall : Eminem fans might already know about Eight Mile, but it’s a historical place everyone should see. Now covered with street art, the wall was originally built to segregate African-Americans from a new White-only development.
  • Kayak the Detroit River : Not much beats paddling down the Detroit River on a warm, sunny day! Check out the unrivaled angles of the city–or you can even make your way to the famous Belle Isle Island. Numerous kayak rental shops are available.

A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!

An eSIM works just like an app: you buy it, you download it, and BOOM! You’re connected the minute you land. It’s that easy.

Is your phone eSIM ready? Read about how e-Sims work or click below to see one of the top eSIM providers on the market and  ditch the plastic .

Detroit has a lot to offer travelers, and the best part is the city still remains free from the perils of mass tourism.

For a little inspiration, here are some of the best things to do in Detroit :

1. Take a walking tour

The best way to see Motown is definitely on foot. Taking a walking tour of downtown Detroit should be the first thing on your agenda, unless, of course, you’re so unfortunate to be visiting in the dead of winter. As I mentioned before, don’t do that. Seriously.

There are several options for taking a walking tour of downtown. If you’re trying to visit Detroit on the cheap, you can always make up your own tour.

There are lots of solid resources out there that will help you map out your own tour of the D. Toss a Motown playlist on and hit the streets to see the best this city has to offer.

Spirit of Detroit

2. Visit Hitsville, USA

What do Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye all have in common? Each one of these legendary artists was on the Motown record label founded in Detroit Michigan.

Visiting the Motown Museum – also commonly known as “Hitsville USA” – is definitely one of the top things to do in Detroit.

3. Visit Belle Isle Island

Right in the middle of the Detroit River is the peaceful Belle Isle Island. The entire island, which is actually a state park, is a perfect place to escape the city on a warm day.

Belle Isle is one of the absolute best outdoor things to do in Detroit. Visit a stunning conservatory, an abandoned casino, or even swim in the river during your day on the island.

belle isle island detroit travel guide

4. See a live show

After learning about Detroit’s musical past, it’s time to jump back into the present. There’s amazing live music in to hear on your trip to Detroit Michigan every single night of the week. Whether you’re into rock, blues, hip hop, EDM, jazz, or funk, you can find something to groove to in Detroit Rock City.

Concerts here range from tiny dive bars with local acts and no cover charge up to world-famous bands rocking out to a crowd of 70,000 at the football stadium. Some of the best places to catch live music in Detroit include: the Fox Theatre, the Fillmore, and the Majestic Theatre.

5. Explore the RiverWalk

Few places better show the new face of Detroit than the RiverWalk. This ongoing project has been transforming the riverfront of downtown Detroit for several years and is a beautiful place to explore.

You can simply walk or rent a bike to enjoy the scenery as you pass through numerous parks and pavilions.

visiting Detroit travel guide

6. Dive into the art scene

If you’re into art (and especially Art Deco), then you’re absolutely going to love Detroit. First of all, the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) is without a doubt the best museum in the city. You can easily spend an entire day in here and still not see it all.

In the last decade, lots of artists have moved to Detroit because you can basically rent a warehouse here for the same price as a tiny studio in New York or LA.

The influx of creatives has created a burgeoning art scene in Detroit. Amazing murals are popping up on streets all over the city, and there are plenty of cool galleries and shops to peruse

7. Go to a ballgame

Detroit is one of only five American cities to have teams in all four major professional sports playing within the city limits. As such, getting to a ballgame is for sure one of the top things to do in Detroit, and you can catch some good ones at both Comerica Park and Ford Field.

The Motor City teams are: the Lions (NFL), Pistons (NBA), Tigers (MLB), and Red Wings (NHL). The latter is the reason for one of the city’s many nicknames – Hockeytown. Best of all, all four teams play right downtown so you don’t have to waste a bunch of time and money traveling to the game.

ford field in downtown detroit travel guide

8. Do the “Coney Challenge”

Don’t ask me why, but the local hot dog in Detroit is called a Coney Island dog, even though the actual Coney Island is hundreds of miles away.

Either way, you’ve got to try one while you’re there. It’s a dog with diced onions, chili, and mustard. Take the “Coney Challenge” by trying one at both American and Lafayette downtown to see which one you like better.

9. Check out the Heidelberg Project

While it’s not downtown, it’s well worth the trip to explore the Heidelberg Project. This outdoor art project was created in 1986 by an artist to revitalize his struggling neighborhood. It’s definitely one of the most interesting things to do in Detroit.

To quote their website, “The Heidelberg Project offers a forum for ideas, a seed of hope, and a bright vision for the future. It’s about taking a stand to save forgotten neighborhoods. It’s about helping people think outside the box and it’s about offering solutions. It’s about healing communities through art – and it’s working!”

Detroit Art Scene

10. Explore the Eastern Market

With over 150 years of history, Eastern Market is a place that’s listed in just about every Detroit travel guide. It’s actually the largest historic public market in all of the United States!

In addition to all the vendors, there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area as well as some amazing street art. Weekends here are especially busy, so be sure to come by and check it out.

This may be the shortest section in our Detroit travel guide. Unlike other much bigger American cities, Detroit doesn’t really have a ton of places to stay in. I mean, some people might be into crashing in a dingy roadside motel full of hookers and crackheads, but that’s probably not you!

Downtown Detroit

When you travel to Detroit, you want to stay as close to downtown as possible, that is, unless you manage to find a Couchsurfing host who lives in a nearby suburb, you have a car, or you don’t mind blowing a bunch of cash on Uber rides. There are plenty of Detroit Airbnb listings these days that are centrally located for better prices than hotels.

If you’re traveling to Detroit on a budget, just go ahead and forget about hotels entirely. There aren’t many hotels in downtown Detroit, and they’re all pretty fucking expensive. Honestly, your best bet is to stay at the hostel in Corktown .

That’s right, there is really only one hostel in downtown Detroit . Hey, it’s better than zero! That’s how many we had five years ago…

The Best Places to Stay in Detroit

These are some of the best places to stay in Detroit :

Downtown Detroit

Detroit’s Downtown has been undergoing a major makeover lately. Troubled areas have been cleaned up and it’s now as safe as any other major US city. But the makeover did more than just clear away the problem parts.

West Village Detroit

West Village

West Village offers a unique feel that you won’t often find when you’re traveling. It’s perfect if you want to feel ‘at home’ during your stay in the city. It has historic buildings, mixed-used developments, and lots of restaurants and shops where you can spend your time and your money.

Midtown Detroit

Midtown is one of Detroit’s best neighborhoods for locals and for travelers. It’s an incredibly walkable part of town, lined with cafes, shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

Eastern Market Detroit

The city’s favorite market is also one of the oldest and largest in the US. Over the years, a whole neighborhood has sprung up around the market.

Corktown Detroit

Corktown is a family-orientated area that has recently been given a facelift. It’s famous among locals for its liberal approach to life, but it’s still incredibly safe and peaceful.

Detroit Budget Accommodation Hacks

Since your options are severely limited when it comes to finding budget accommodation in Detroit, I don’t really have that many great hacks for you here!

I can’t even recommend camping as part of my Detroit travel tips: while there are plenty of great spots to go camping in Michigan , Detroit is the last place you’d want to spend a night in a tent.

If you really want to save some money and see Detroit from a local’s perspective, it’s worth looking for a Couchsurfing host . Even if you don’t find a place to crash, you might be able to hook up with some locals to go out and see the city with.

Let’s be honest, a lot of backpackers in the US skip Detroit these days which is a real shame as it represents bargain-priced travel gold! Obviously, travel costs are a major concern for backpackers. I’ll give you the bad news first, guys. Detroit is in the United States, ergo it is expensive.

Just like backpacking Western Europe or Australia, your money will not go nearly as far here as it does in Southeast Asia or South America.

Detroit Travel Guide: city by night

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s the good news: the cost of travel in Detroit is way cheaper than other American cities like Chicago or San Francisco .

On the super-budget end of the spectrum, you can get by on $40-50 a day, but this is only if you land free accommodation through Couchsurfing or a friend, and carefully watch what you spend on food and drinks.

A more realistic Detroit daily budget is closer to $80-90 a day, which allows you to stay at an awesome hostel and partake in a bit of the finer things Detroit is known for, like live music, an art museum, or a sporting event.

You’ll also be able to eat and drink better than you would on a shoestring budget.

A Daily Budget for Traveling in Detroit

Below I’ve highlighted a daily Detroit budget, spread out across several key categories.

Travel Tips – Detroit on A Budget

As is the case with just about any American city, your budget will dwindle fast in Detroit if you’re not careful. If you end up taking a lot of cabs, eating out for every meal, and hitting the bars every night, you will most definitely burn a hole through your wallet.

That being said, there are plenty of ways you can make your dollar go farther in the Motor City. As this is a Broke Backpacker Detroit travel guide, I’m here to help you keep more money in your pocket. Here are some of the best tips for traveling to Detroit on a budget:

Detroit Ren Cen

  • Take advantage of free activities:  You don’t need to spend a ton of money to have a good time in Detroit. In fact, there are plenty of free things to do in the city.
  • Use public transportation:  This usually goes without saying in any big city, but Detroit is a little different. You see, the public transportation here can sometimes suck, but you can get downtown from the airport for just $2 and ride the People Mover for only $0.75.
  • Walk:  Believe it or not, Detroit is actually a pretty walkable city (at least downtown – don’t go wandering down dark alleys outside of the center unless you have a penchant for being mugged). When exploring downtown Detroit, you can easily walk around in any season that is not winter. You won’t want to walk around in winter. In fact, don’t even come to Detroit in winter.
  • Find the deals:  If you’re trying to visit Detroit on a budget, be sure to seek out the deals. Whether it’s a good lunch special, a sick Happy Hour deal, or discounted tickets to a show or ballgame, you can always save a few bucks if you dig hard enough.
  • Fill your water bottle : Despite what you may have heard about the water crisis in nearby Flint, the tap water is just fine to drink in Detroit.  Pack a travel water bottle and save money every day!

Why You Should Travel to Detroit with a Water Bottle

Plastic is certainly a problem in Detroit… so do your part and keep the Big Blue beautiful.

You aren’t going to save the world overnight, but you might as well be part of the solution and not the problem. When you travel to some of the world’s most remote places, you come to realize the full extent of the plastic problem. And I hope you become more inspired to continue being a responsible traveler.

Plus, now you won’t be buying overpriced bottles of water from the supermarkets either! Travel with a filtered water bottle instead and never waste a cent nor a turtle’s life again.

grayl geopress filter bottle

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

In case you haven’t noticed by now, I 100% do not recommend traveling to Detroit in the winter. As T-Baby sings in her famous video, “It’s so cold in the D!”.

Seriously, though. If you’re planning to visit Detroit as a go-getter backpacker – which involves lots of walking or cycling and time spent outdoors – you’ll want to avoid Motown between December and March.

It can get bitter, bitter cold in the winter months. Unless you really love ice skating, I would take a hard pass on Detroit in the winter.

Basically, any other month of the year is just fine to travel to Detroit. Spring and fall are both nice, although they seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

view of detroit at sunset from belle island

Summer can be hot and muggy, but there is a lot going on and you can always stop inside to soak up some A/C for a bit.

When considering what time to travel to Detroit, plan around the events you might want to attend.

For example, if you really want to see an NFL game, I would recommend going to another city. In all seriousness, though, the Lions only play eight home games a year between September and January, and they never make the playoffs (sad face).

If you want to dance your ass off to the best electronic music in the world, you should come to Detroit in late May to check out the Movement Festival. Those who prefer jazz should come at the end of August for that excellent festival.

What to Pack for Detroit

Here are few essentials you shouldn’t leave off your Detroit travel packing list :

Osprey Daylite Plus

Osprey Daylite Plus

Any city slicker needs a SLICK daypack. In general, you can never go wrong with an Osprey pack, but with its array of awesome organisation, durable materials, and a comfy build, the Daylite Plus will make your urban jaunts buttery smooth.

Grayls Geopress Water Bottle

Grayl Geopress Filtered Bottle

Save $$$, save the planet, and save yourself the headache (or tummy ache). Instead of sticking to bottled plastic, buy a Grayl Geopress, drink water no matter the source, and be happy knowing the turtles and fishies thank you (and so do we!). 🙂

OCLU Action Camera

Wait, it’s cheaper than a GoPro and… better than a GoPro? The OCLU action cam is the cam for budget backpackers that want to immortalise all their wildest adventures – including that time you dropped it off a Himalayan mountain – WITHOUT breaking the bank.

Solgaard Solarbank

Solgaard Solarbank

Resourceful travellers know how to find power outlets anywhere on the road; smart travellers just pack a solar power bank instead. With 4-5 phone cycles per charge and the ability to top up literally anywhere the sun is shining, there’s no reason to ever get lost again!

Petzl Actik Core Headlamp

ALL travellers need a headtorch – no exceptions! Even in the hostel dorm, this beauty can save you in a real pinch. If you haven’t got in on the headtorch game, DO. I promise you: you’ll never look back. Or at least if you do, you’ll be able to see what you’re looking at.

Although major improvements have been made in recent years, Detroit remains one of the most dangerous major cities in the US. That being said, the revitalized downtown area is remarkedly safer now than it was just a decade ago.

As long as you’re mindful of your surroundings and don’t go around flashing valuables, you’ll be fine.

Most crimes that occur in downtown Detroit are crimes of opportunity. Leave a car parked unattended, and it will get broken into or even stolen.

Walk down a dark, random street at 2 AM with your iPhone in your hand, and someone will probably mug you. Just don’t be an idiot.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll in Detroit

Detroit certainly has its fair share of tasty beers, as well as plenty of bars to go around. Most of its social scene revolves around alcohol, which is widely available to anyone 21 and older. Marijuana is also legal in the state of Michigan–and Detroit too–though dispensaries are still lacking as of June 2022. There are many in the nearby suburbs though.

white abandoned house in overgrown yard detroit travel guide

Drugs of any and all other kinds can be found in the city, which is known for its high usage of crack cocaine. I highly recommend avoid buying any illegal drugs from strangers. Not only could they be selling you fentanyl (a common problem in the US these days) but as this is quite a provocative city, you will be asking for trouble.

Detroit is far from a traveler’s Mecca, but in case you do happen to meet someone on the road , be safe, responsible and respectable!

Getting Insured BEFORE Visiting Detroit

Traveling without insurance would be risky so do consider getting good backpacker insurance sorted before you head off on an adventure.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

When looking up flights to Detroit, be sure to use the airport code DTW . The airport is actually located in Romulus, which is about a 40-minute drive or so from downtown.

Previously, budget travellers were totally screwed when it came to getting to and from the airport. Thankfully, there is now a $2 bus that takes you all the way downtown. Score!

how to get around Detroit

Detroit is a major hub for Delta, so you can get plenty of flights to and from other cities in the US as well as several to/from Europe. For budget airlines, Spirit runs plenty of flights to Detroit. Just make sure you know it’s basically a flying bus and you have to pay for everything.

Despite the old abandoned train station, there are actually still trains traveling to and from Chicago. You can also catch a bus to the Amtrak station in Toledo to catch trains bound for New York.

You can score super cheap fares to Chicago on the Megabus if you book really early. I’ve taken that route several times for just $1. Otherwise, you can always take a Greyhound bus. It’s one of those unique travel experiences in America that you’ll be talking about for years to come!

Getting Around Detroit

It should come as no surprise that in Motor City, the car is still king. If you travel to Detroit for just a few days and stay at the hostel, though, you’ll be able to get by with a combination of public transportation, walking, and taking an Uber or two.

Public transportation isn’t great in Detroit, but it does exist. At least once on your trip, you should take a ride on the elevated train known as the People Mover . It only costs $0.75 and provides some great views of the city.

There’s a new streetcar called the Q Line that runs up Woodward Ave, which is useful for going between downtown and Midtown. A ticket costs $1.50 and is good for three hours.

If you’d rather cycle around town, there are plenty of places that offer bike rentals these days. More and more bike lanes are being put in each year, making cycling in Detroit a pretty solid option.

Like most places in the US, working in Detroit is going to be almost impossible if you’re not a US citizen or permanent resident. You would otherwise need a work visa, which is notoriously difficult to obtain. It’s certainly possible to live the digital nomad life in D-Town, though it’s not exactly an ideal location to work online long term.

Good news: Volunteering in Seattle IS possible, though I highly recommend you go through a reputable company like Worldpackers .

Worldpackers connects travelers with meaningful volunteer experiences all over the world in exchange for room and board! It’s transparent and review-based, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into before you arrive.

Detroit is definitely a fun city for going out and partying. Nightlife in Detroit presents you with a bevy of options, from classy cocktail lounges with smooth jazz, to dive bars with local rock bands, to underground raves that pump out the beats until the wee hours of the morning.

If you’re just visiting for a few days, chances are you’ll stick to the Downtown/Midtown/Corktown trio of neighborhoods. That’s fine, as you have way more options than you can fit into a few nights. Craft breweries, wine bars, music venues – the list goes on and on.

Fillmore Detroit travel guide nightlife in detroit

As far as booze goes, you’ve got tons of options in the D. There are a few craft breweries in town, including Batch, Atwater, and Motor City Brewing Works.

HopCat is a great bar to hit if you want to sample a bunch of beers from other parts of Michigan as well as lots of others from the US and abroad.

Wine and cocktail lovers have plenty of choices in Detroit as well. Check out Motor City Wine , which also has live music from time to time.

Dining in Detroit

While Detroit may not exactly be a culinary capital, there are still plenty of amazing restaurants there. More and more places are opening up in Detroit, and you can find cuisine from all over the world.

Last time I was home, my dad took us out to a fantastic Thai restaurant set in shipping containers. It’s called Takoi if you want to check it out.

As I’ve said a few times already, you absolutely have to try a Detroit Coney Island hot dog . It’s the stuff dreams are made of! If you want to try Detroit-style pizza, your best bet is either Buddy’s or Niki’s .

detroit style pizza detroit travel guide

Another solid choice for relatively cheap and tasty eats is the Bucharest Grille . They make a killer schwarma that tastes like it’s straight from the Middle East.

At some point in your trip, you should definitely drop into a convenience store to buy a bag of Better Made chips and a bottle of Faygo or Vernor’s. Trust me. It’s the Detroit thing to do.

I also recommend checking out Greektown and/or Mexicantown while you’re in the D. Both have excellent restaurants that serve authentic Greek and Mexican cuisine.

With the influx of skinny-jean wearing, fixed-gear bike riding hipsters in Detroit, there’s no shortage of cafes.

Cheap Eats in Detroit

There are some of the best places to eat in Detroit on a budget:

  • Asian Corned Beef : A unique fusion has created the corn beef eggroll, a truly unique Detroit food. You can find other interesting dishes here too.
  • Bucharest Grill : A fantastic place to carry out large, filling schwarmas for about $8.
  • Mike’s Famous Ham Place: The ham sandwiches here have been the best in the city for decades. Enjoy massive portions for less than $9. The split pea soup is also fantastic.
  • Green Dot Stables : A wide variety of delicious sliders are available on the cheap at this casual, top-rated Detroit restaurant.
  • Chef Greg’s Soul-N-The-Wall : For some of the best sandwiches in the city (under $10) look no further than this no-frills shop. They’re known for their Boogaloo Wonderland creation.
  • Taqueria Lupitas : A low-key restaurant dishing up delicious tacos and other eats for less. It’s located in Mexicantown and remains cash-only.

Getting Off the Beaten Path in Detroit

As someone who grew up in the ‘burbs just outside the worst parts of Detroit, let me be real with you and tell you that you don’t want to get too off the beaten track here. In all honesty, there are lots of areas of the city that are not way too sketchy to wander around in. That being said, you don’t have to spend your entire trip right downtown.

mexican town and bridge to canada sign traveling in detroit

Here are a few ideas:

  • Hamtramck: This is actually another city entirely, surrounded by Detroit, and is a cool place to explore. It’s a city that has always attracted immigrant communities, as it was a major hub for Polish Americans for a while. You can still celebrate the Polish heritage here with the annual Paczki Day.
  • Mexicantown: While many people who travel to Detroit spend some time in Greektown, few make it out to Mexicantown in the southwest part of the city. As a native Detroiter who now lives in Mexico , I can tell you that the tacos are legit AF here!
  • The Henry Ford Museum : The Henry Ford Museum tells the story of Henry Ford who founded Ford Motors. Henry Ford has gone down in history as one of America’s (and capitalism’s) most influential and controversial figures.

Still have a few questions about traveling to Detroit? I’ve got answers:

What parts of Detroit are dangerous?

The part of Detroit that comes under the 48205 zip code is said to be the most dangerous zip code in the United States. Avoid any location with this area code. The entire East side of the city should also be avoided. Luckily, no tourist spots are in these places and it would be had to accidentally end up there.

Is weed legal in Detroit?

While recreational weed IS legal in the state of Michigan, there are not any dispensaries in Detroit YET. Though they should be coming soon as in March 2022 a law was passed allowing for cannabis sales inside of the city.

What food is Detroit known for?

Detroit is famous for two iconic foods that you should definitely try while in the city. These include its deep-dish Detroit style pizza and the Detroit Coney Island hot dog.

How many days do you need in Detroit?

Three days in Detroit is the perfect amount of time to experience the city. If you have a bit more time on your hands, then consider going on one of the many cool Detroit day trips.

What is the best area to stay in Detroit?

The best areas to stay in Detroit are: Downtown for first-timers, Midtown for the nightlife, and Corktown for families. Greektown and The District are also viable options.

Well, that’s it for this Detroit travel guide! I hope I did a good job convincing that my hometown is not a terrifying cesspool of decay and violence.

Instead, it’s now thriving city with new development happening all the time. Whether your a sports fan, abandoned buildings connosiuer, or just looking for somewhere a little bit off the beaten path, then Motor City is for you!

Detroit is rising from the ashes, my friends, and its best days are ahead, not behind it. Get yourself to the D sooner than later. You’ll be rewarded for your choice with a vibrant culture, dedicated locals, and so much more.

So all that’s left now is for you to book those tickets. Motown awaits!

As being a former resident of Detroit and also as a first responder EMT/ para-medic I love Detroit even if it’s been (30) years. You have a beautiful city.As you well know Detroit has a lot of talent and the motown music…. I love it. Even. after all these years Detroit is going strong. I’m a music lover myself and I love Motown music. You have a lot of good people… this is what makes Detroit of what it is today. Detroit is beautiful at night. This has been a very difficult year for everyone, but I know that Detroit is strong. Thank- u for the videos of your great city. I have to give Detroit P.D. credit for keeping Detroit safe and everyone that is involved. Detroit has improved over the years according to what I see on the internet. Take care of your beautiful city. One of these days, I would like to come back and visit your city… can’t forget about the food.Again, you have a beautiful city. Gotta lot of memories.Hope Detroit keeps growing. You should be proud of your city…I’m all for it!

Just wanted to clarify that Hamtramck is not on the border of Detroit, it is actually completely surrounded by Detroit. Great article, though! Detroit has a plethora of great things to do do in and around the city!

Thanks for this. We have amended the copy to include this correction! Aiden

I’ll be going to Detroit in May. My partner has a work thing and I’m tagging along for the free hotel. This is a great resource of things to do while I’m there. Thanks!

14 Things to See and Do in Detroit

The towering downtown skyline of Detroit, Michigan lit up during the evening

In this guest post, my former Creative Director Raimee of Raimee Travels shares her tips and advice for visiting Detroit, one of the country’s most underrated cities!

Just north of Lake Erie’s western end, Detroit, Michigan, is a sprawling metropolis home to over four million people. Haunted by the echoes of its past, the city is often overlooked or ignored by domestic and international travelers alike.

Having grown up in the Detroit area, I can understand why those unaware of its charm consider Detroit a blighted city, burdened by debt, crime, and a fleeing population. I assure you, though, this preconception couldn’t be more wrong.

The famed “Motor City” has historically been known for its auto manufacturing sector, its contributions to the early music industry, and its beloved sports teams. Today, through its revitalization, Detroit has taken on a new appeal.

From its world-class museums and its incredible assortment of eateries to its culturally-inspired dive bars and eclectic garage-like music scene, Detroit is one of the most exciting cities in America to both explore and be a part of right now. Its population is motivated, its people are proud, and the suburbs’ rekindled interest in downtown has helped open the door to a new era of prosperity and a growing young population.

To help inspire you to plan a trip, here is my curated list of things to see and do I’d recommend to anyone visiting Detroit:

Table of Contents

1. Take a Walking Tour

2. explore the eastern market, 3. visit the detroit institute of arts, 4. walk or bike along the dequindre cut, 5. check out one of the largest bookstores in the world, 6. relax at belle isle, 7. take a tour of the guardian building, 8. walk around campus martius park, 9. snap photos at the belt, 10. visit the fox theatre, 11. see the motown museum, 12. henry ford museum of american innovation, 13. visit the museum of african-american history, 14. take a food or brewery tour, where to eat in detroit.

A quiet street in Detroit, Michigan during the day

For a more niche walking tour, check out the Ghosts and Spirits walking tour, a haunted walk that illuminates Detroit’s spooky side.

The Eastern Market is a huge marketplace with local foods, art, jewelry, artisan crafts, and more. It covers 43 acres and is the largest historic public market district in the United States , dating back over 150 years.

There are three different market days during the week: Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays. It is particularly busy on Saturdays when farmers tend to bring in their poultry, livestock, and fresh produce for sale.

2934 Russell St, +1 313-833-9300, easternmarket.org. Check the website for market days and times. Admission is free.

The historic exterior of the Detroit Institute of Arts with a dark statue in the foreground

While you could easily spend hours here, if you choose your galleries in advance, you can be in and out in two hours without rushing.

5200 Woodward Ave., +1 313-833-7900, dia.org. Open weekdays 9am–4pm (10pm on Fridays) and weekends 10am–5pm. Admission is $18 USD.

The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a two-mile urban recreational path that offers a pedestrian link between the East Riverfront, the Eastern Market, and several residential neighborhoods in between. Along the path, you’ll find all kinds of street art, as well as buskers in the summer. It’s a nice place to walk or jog and take in the city.

If you plan on visiting the Eastern Market and the Riverfront (which you should!), consider renting a bike from mogodetroit.com. You can rent them for under $20 USD.

Maybe it’s because I love all bookstores, but this is one of my favorite places to explore in Detroit. John K. King Used & Rare Books, located in an old glove factory, is an enchanting host to over one million books.

I love spending time wandering through the rows of strange titles and marveling at the rare editions they have in stock — some are so rare, you have to make an appointment to be allowed to view them.

901 W. Lafayette Blvd., +1 313-961-0622, johnkingbooksdetroit.com. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10am–5pm.

Inside a greenhouse on Belle Island in Detroit, USA

Here are some of my other favorite things to do at Belle Isle:

  • Wander the conservatory – The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is a peaceful botanical garden stretching over 13 acres, with dozens of walking paths and greenhouses to explore. Admission is free.
  • Hit the range – Belle Island Golf Range is a driving range with practice areas for driving, putting, and chipping. It’s a fun spot to spend a couple of hours.
  • Enjoy the beach – There’s over half a mile of beach where you can swim, lounge, or rent a kayak or paddleboard and soak up the sun.

You’ll find many architectural beauties around Detroit, but the most prestigious is the 36-floor Guardian Building downtown, located in the Financial District. Completed in 1929, it is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most important Art Deco skyscrapers in the world. The interior is incredible, with a massive and ornate lobby. It looks more like a church than a skyscraper!

500 Griswold St., +1 313-963-4567, guardianbuilding.com. Open 24/7. Admission to the building is free.

After a devastating fire in 1805, Campus Martius was created as the de facto center of Detroit’s rebuilding efforts. Covering just over an acre, the park features outdoor cafés and bars, a mini beach, green space, food trucks galore, monuments, and a host of weekend festivals and activities.

In the winter, you’ll find a giant Christmas tree, an ice-skating rink, and a Christmas market. Every time I visit this area of town, I reflect on how far the city has come in the past ten years.

To visit the park, take the light rail to the Campus Martius station.

The Belt, named after its location in the former downtown garment district, is a culturally redefined alley in the heart of Detroit. Public art is the driving force behind the redevelopment of The Belt, which has murals and installations by local, national, and international artists. It is part of Library Street Collective’s continuous effort to ensure that artists have a space to create and engage with the public.

To visit the Belt, take the light rail to Broadway station.

The Fox Theatre in Detroit lit up at night

The building is a National Historic Landmark, the highest honor given by the National Park Service. If you can, try and catch a performance during your visit. If that’s not an option, stop by during the evening to see it all lit up. It looks gorgeous!

2211 Woodward Ave., +1 313-471-7000, foxtheatredetroit.net. Check the website for performance schedules and ticket details.

The exterior of the Motown Museum in beautiful Detroit, Michigan, USA

Its main office, named Hitsville U.S.A., was converted into a museum in 1985 to highlight the important contributions of Motown to the greater American music scene. It has all sorts of records, awards, and costumes from famous musicians (including Michael Jackson). You can also see one of the recording studios where many of the label’s classic hits were produced.

2648 W. Grand Blvd., +1 313-875-2264, motownmuseum.org. Open Wednesday–Sunday 10am–6pm. Admission is $20 USD.

Henry Ford, a Michigan native and founder of the Ford Motor Company (and prominent anti-Semite), was responsible for kick-starting the automobile industry in the US in the early 1900s.

Today, you can tour the company’s massive museum and learn about the history of the automobile and how it evolved from a novelty to a staple of modern society. The museum has numerous cars (including presidential automobiles), as well as exhibitions on trains, power generation, and much more.

Additionally, adjacent to the museum is Greenfield Village, a semi-separate museum that hosts all kinds of science and agriculture exhibitions that Ford collected over his lifetime. It’s a great place to visit with kids, as many of the exhibits are interactive and educational.

20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn, +1 313-982-6001, thehenryford.org/visit/henry-ford-museum. Admission is $30 USD.

Opened in 1965, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the world’s biggest permanent collection of African-American culture. There are over 35,000 items and artifacts highlighting the history and culture of African-Americans throughout the ages. The museum has exhibitions on civil rights, art, film, and much more. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours here as there is a lot to see and its very informative.

315 E. Warren Ave., +1 313-494-5800, thewright.org. Closed Mondays. Open Tuesday–Sunday 9am–5pm. Admission is $30 USD.

Detroit is fast becoming a foodie destination. There are tons of delicious restaurants and a growing number of breweries here, kickstarting a foodie renaissance that is putting the city on the map. If you’re looking for an introduction into Detroit’s food and drink scene, take a tour. There are plenty of food and brewery tours that will give you a mouthwatering or thirst-quenching introduction to the culinary and microbrewery scenes.

Detroit History Tours will introduce you to the best beers Detroit has to offer. You’ll get to eat some wonderful food, try tasty drinks, and meet the chefs and restaurateurs making it all possible!

11 Incredible Things To Do In Eclectic Detroit, Michigan

american travel detroit

  • United States

Detroit, Michigan, nicknamed Motown and the Motor City, showcases the city’s automotive and musical heritage. While downtown Detroit features many of the area’s tourist attractions, you’ll also want to explore some of the suburbs, like Royal Oak and Dearborn, to explore the Detroit Zoo and the Henry Ford.

You’ll find so many fun things to do while visiting Detroit that it might be challenging to decide where to start sightseeing. So here are 11 must-see things to do while you’re there.

Aretha Franklin's Pink Cadillac parked outside the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

1. Charles H. Wright Museum Of African American History

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History , located in Detroit’s midtown region, explores the cultural heritage of African Americans through permanent and rotating exhibits. Permanent exhibits at the Wright include Detroit Performs , featuring those in music, dance, and theater who reached national and international recognition in the performing arts. Another display, And Still We Rise , provides a comprehensive look at African American resilience throughout the years. As an art lover, I enjoyed the Stories in Stained Glass exhibit, where Samuel A. Hodge, a stained-glass artist, created pieces representing dancers and musicians.

Pro Tip: You can park at the Cultural Center parking lot behind the museum, where the entrance is off John R. Street. Parking here is also convenient for the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Michigan Science Center.

Person watching King Penguins at the Detroit Zoo’s Polk Penguin Conservation Center

2. Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo , located in the suburb of Royal Oak, sits on 125 acres of natural habitats. Open year-round, you’ll find over 2,000 animals at the zoo, representing more than 200 species. In addition to the animals, you can ride a carousel, watch a movie in the 4D theater, and stop by the Rissman PlayVenture with the kiddos to blow off some steam.

Pro Tip: While you’ll find benches throughout the zoo, one way to reduce your walking is to take the Tauber Family Railroad one-way in your explorations. While you can’t see the animals on the train, our family likes to jump on and take it to the back of the zoo. Then, view the animals walking to the front at the exit towards the end of the day.

3. Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is the birthplace of the Model T. The building, constructed in 1904, is considered one of the world’s most important automotive heritage locations. They assembled the first 12,000 Model Ts at this manufacturing plant and shipped them by railroad.

In 1910, the Ford Motor Company moved its operations to the Highland Park Plan and sold the Piquette building to Studebaker, where that company used it to build automobiles until 1933.

Pro Tip: Open Wednesday through Sunday, they offer public guided tours at 10 a.m., Noon, and 2 p.m.

Detroit Institute of Arts

4. Detroit Institute Of Arts (DIA)

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) , located on Woodward Avenue, features work from the beginning of civilization through the 21st century. You’ll find over 60,000 pieces of art here, so you’ll want to plan your visit. Van Gough’s 1887 self-portrait and Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals are both must-see works at the DIA.

With so much to see here, The GooseChase app is a self-guided scavenger hunt and a fun way to explore the museum with a purpose.

Pro Tip: Take a free 1-hour guided tour that provides an overview of the museum.

Gateway To Freedom Statue in Hart Plaza in Downtown Detroit, Michigan

5. Hart Plaza

The Gateway to Freedom Sculpture , located in Hart Plaza , is one of the sculptures along the Detroit Riverwalk. Facing Windsor, Canada, it commemorates one of the final stops along the Underground Railroad. Also in the area, at the corner of Woodward and Jefferson across from the Renaissance Center, is a sculpture dedicated to Detroit native and heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, known as The Fist.

Pro Tip: The Detroit People Mover , with 11 stops open to the public, including Greek Town and the General Motors Renaissance Center, is a great way to get around downtown Detroit. As you ride, take the time to enjoy the murals you find at each of the People Mover stations.

6. The Henry Ford

The Henry Ford , located in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, offers a variety of experiences — Greenfield Village, the Henry Ford Museum, and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour.

Greenfield Village

I still remember the magic and anticipation of my fourth-grade field trip to Greenfield Village . It was magical then and still is today. The village is an 80-acre, open-air museum divided into seven districts. You can visit working farms and see Henry Ford’s Model T district, where you can ride a Model T. In addition, Liberty Craft Works showcases artisan crafts such as weaving and glass blowing. You can also see Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park Complex featuring his laboratory to see where he conducted some of his experiments.

Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

The Henry Ford Museum Of American Innovation

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation immerses you in the stories that built America. You can step onto the bus where Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back, see the seat where Abraham Lincoln sat on his fatal night in the Ford Theater, and explore aviation achievements beginning with the Wright brothers.

The Ford Rouge Factory Tour

The Ford Rouge Factory Tour offers two theater experiences and a self-guided factory tour where you’ll see how they make the Ford F-150.

Motown Museum is the original home of Motown Records

7. Motown Museum

In 1959, Berry Gordy started Motown Records. The Motown Museum is inside the first headquarters of Motown Records. You’ll find Studio A is where they recorded many Motown favorites. The museum also displays the apartment where Berry Gordy and his family lived during the early days of Motown Records.

Belle Isle Park surrounded by the Detroit River

8. Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle Park is a Michigan State Park urban sanctuary in the middle of the Detroit River. It combines city attractions like museums and aquariums with outdoor nature activities like paddle sports and a nature center.

Belle Isle Aquarium

The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest in the United States. I enjoyed the history of the original green-arched ceiling designed to make you feel like you’re underwater. Plan to spend an hour exploring the aquarium.

Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory

The 13-acre Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory features five horticultural settings — the Palm House, the Tropical, a sunken Fernery, the Cactus, and Show Houses — featuring rotating flowering plants. I love taking photographs here.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum

Dossin Great Lakes Museum tells the story of Detroit’s maritime history in both indoor and outdoor settings. The anchor from the SS Edmund Fitzgerald is on display here.

Pro Tip: While all vehicles entering the park require a Recreation Passport, one isn’t necessary if you’re walking in. Also, the aquarium, conservatory, and museum have free admission.

9. Michigan Science Center

With more than 200 exhibits at the Michigan Science Center , you can easily spend an entire day with the kiddos doing hands-on activities. One of my favorite galleries is the Waves and Vibrations gallery. Our family especially enjoyed the walk-in kaleidoscope and the Seashell Pipes, where we all enjoyed experimenting with sounds and colors.

In addition to the hands-on exhibits, check out the schedule of shows at the theaters. They have shows at the IMAX Dome Theater, the Planetarium, the Toyota 4D Engineering Theater, and the Science Stage.

Eastern Market, the outdoor public market, in Detroit

10. Eastern Market

Eastern Market , open since 1841, is one of the nation’s largest open-air markets. While the farmers market is open on Saturdays, the area around the market offers a diverse mix of shopping and restaurants the rest of the week. In addition, murals cover the walls around the area, making it an exciting place to explore outdoor art.

Historic Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan lit up at night

11. Fox Theatre

Built in 1928, the Fox Theatre is a National Historic Landmark and the first theater in the world to hold custom built-in equipment to present talking movies. Today, the Fox Theatre offers Broadway shows in various genres, including drama, musicals, and comedy.

Traveling While Black: Detroit Black Owned Guide

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

When I think of Detroit, I automatically think of black history. Motown anyone? Detroit is literally the second blackest city in the USA with 78.8% of the population being black, right under Jackson, Mississippi and right above Birmingham, Alabama. Detroit is the only city on the top ten list list that is north of the Mason-Dixon line. Interestingly, it is also the largest city in the top 10.  As a result, you cannot explore #Detroit without exploring #BlackDetroit !

american travel detroit

Keep reading this blog post as I will answer some of the most common questions:

Is Detroit dangerous for tourists? How bad is Detroit?

How can I spend a day in Detroit?

When did African Americans come to Detroit? What is Detroit's Black history?

What does Detroit black travel look like?

What are some of Detroit's Black-Owned Businesses?

What is Detroit’s connection to the "Black Experience?" When did African Americans come to Detroit? What is Detroit's Black history?

Detroit was at the center of the Underground Railroad as it was often the last stop for fleeing slaves before crossing the river to Canada, which abolished slavery in 1834. Michigan was a free territory. However, many were afraid of being captured by slave catchers. As a result, they wanted to go over the border to Canada.  As many as 200 Underground Railroad stops existed in #Michigan , many located in Detroit. There is a statue commemorating those stops by the river.

Interestingly, before World War I, Detroit had about 4,000 black people, 1% of its population.  However, because of the war, employers in need of workers recruited African Americans from the South. Many moved as part of the first Great Migration in desperatio to leave Jim Crow South. As a result, between 1910-1930, the population skyrocketed from under 6,000 to over 120,000. By 1920, 87% of Michigan’s black population was born outside of the state, mostly from the South.

Traveling While Black in Detroit

DISCLAIMER: In an effort to shed light on a lens that I travel everywhere with, I decided that it was important for me to explicitly talk about My Black American Traveler Experience. I want to stress that everyone has their own experiences and biases when traveling to any country. Therefore, my experience may not be your own. In specifying the Black American identity, I acknowledge that while there are some commonalities in experiences as Black people, there is also privilege that comes with being an American. I am supplementing my thoughts and experience with a demographic context as I think it is important in order to paint the whole picture of #travelingwhileblack

My Expectations in Detroit

Extra Black! I thought most people I would come across would be Black. I expected to experience nothing but #Blackculture in Detroit.

My Reality in Detroit

Treatment & Safety: I was treated well in Detroit! Great hospitality. Super kind people. Unfortunately, there were certain areas where more Black people are concentrated that looked sketchy and deserted. As a result, I would find myself taking more precautions. For example, the Raven Lounge had many black people hanging out. However, it is on a deserted street about 10 minutes driving away from Downtown. Once I entered the lounge, everyone from the bouncer to the waiter were super nice. They even offered us free food from someone’s birthday celebration. It felt like home.

Language: In terms of language, Detroit is in the United States, so that was not an issue at all.

Vibe & Culture: Black culture surely does exist but not in the way I anticipated. I felt I had to seek out Black culture, especially because most things Black such as #Blackowned restaurants or Black history museums were further away from the Downtown area.

american travel detroit

Visibility: Although Detroit has a lot of Black people, it was interesting to notice the clear segregation that still exists. For example, while venturing Downtown, I came across a lot more white and non-Black people wandering around except in one black-owned restaurant, Floods. Downtown is where new businesses are emerging as well as new apartment developments. The friend whom I was visiting was a Black woman who lives downtown and her roommates were also Black natives. They were probably one of the few Black people that I saw living in that apartment building. However, I did see large amounts of Black people in areas further away from Downtown. For example, the Raven Lounge had many Black people hanging out. However, it is located on a deserted street about a 10 minute drive  from Downtown. Other examples include many of the Black businesses that are located in the historic area, The Avenue of Fashion, which is about a 15 minute drive from Downtown.

I had the fortunate opportunity to speak to a few Black Detroiters: A supreme court judge and two lawyers (who are twin brothers). All three of them are prime examples of the grit that many Detroiters have. Hearing their stories was inspirational. It was clear that there are many struggles growing up in Detroit -- racial segregation, which then leads to HUGE disparities in education, health care, and even response time of first responders -- many obstacles to overcome. However, they have overcome those obstacles and returned to Detroit, wishing to do better for their city.

Black Stats in Detroit

Detroit is one of the most racially segregated cities in the USA. Even though Black people continued to move to Detroit  from the 1940’s-1970’s, they faced exclusion. Blacks makeup only 13% of the state's population as a whole, but account for 79% of Detroit's population!

As of 2018, Detroit is literally the second blackest city in the USA with 78.8% of the population being Black, right under Jackson, Mississippi and right above Birmingham, Alabama.

Overall: My experiences overall in Detroit, especially Black Detroit, made me fall in love with the city as a whole!

american travel detroit

How can I spend a day in Black Detroit?

Here is a day-long Detroit Black owned itinerary that can help you experience Detroit Black Travel through experiencing #blackownedbusinesses :

MORNING: Eat brunch at Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles

I discovered this place through Travel Noire as I was looking for black brunch spots in Detroit. Interestingly, the spots were much harder to find than I thought. However, Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffle is a must! This was probably my favorite spot to eat during my time in Detroit. If I had time, I would have returned. Owned by former NFL player Ron Bartell, this spot is perfect if you are looking for chicken and waffles as well as  some delicious soul food. All the items on the menu have creative names such as “WHAT UP DOE” which is the 3pc fried chicken, 2 waffles, grits & 2 eggs w/cheese. YUM! They even serve Kool-aid! My mouth is salivating just thinking back to the food. It is worth a trip away from Downtown Detroit to what felt like a  more local Detroit in the historical area T he Avenue of Fashion.

AFTERNOON: Visit some Black History Museums!

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History : This museum was founded in 1965 by Charles H. Wright, a practicing gynecologist who wanted to preserve African American history after visiting a memorial to Danish World War II heroes in Denmark. He started off opening the “International Afro-American Museum” in a house he owned and featured the inventions of  Elijah McCoy as well as masks from Nigeria and Ghana he got while visiting there. The following year, he turned it into a traveling exhibit around the state. Today, it features more than 35,000 artifacts and archives, making it one of the world’s largest permanent exhibits on Afican-American culture.

american travel detroit

I truly loved the interactive exhibit, “ And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture .” It felt similar to the National Museum of African American History and Culture where you can walk through an interactive timeline of history from the painful Middle Passage to the inspiring Civil Rights Movement.

Motown Museum : Have you really gone to Detroit if you haven’t gone to the Motown Museum? I think it is a good experience for everyone to check out at least once on a Detroit trip because Motown originated here. Nicknamed “Hitsville U.S.A." -- literally the first thing you see when you walk up -- this museum is located at the record label’s former administrative building and recording studio before it moved to Los Angeles. This is not like a regular museum, where you can wander as you please. Instead, you take a guided tour through the house where you learn how the founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy. started it all and also get to see memorabilia from various artists.

american travel detroit

LATE NIGHT: Dinner and live music at one of the following spots

Floods Bar & Grille : Looking for some tasty soul food and happy hour drink prices? Look no more. Floods Bar & Grille is your spot! I ordered a soul food platter with fried chicken, fried shrimp, mac and cheese and French fries. I found it pretty tasty and the mac & cheese was made just how I like it! Their drinks are strong, if that is what you are looking for. Later in the evening, there is live entertainment. Many people come with their families or come to celebrate special occasions. It is clearly a go-to spot for Black people in Downtown Detroit, especially because there are not really any Black-owned spots in the immediate Downtown area.

american travel detroit

Raven's Lounge & Restaurant : I f you are looking for some late night entertainment and authentic blues music, come to Raven’s Lounge & Restaurant . It is a very intimate, laid-back spot that offers South soul food, drinks and live blues acts from Thursday - Saturday from 9 PM - 2 AM. It is clearly a great spot considering that it has been around since the 1950’s and is Michigan’s oldest Blues Bar. It is also one of Detroit's last live blues venues. When we went, the street was deserted. However, the place itself was full because there was a birthday party being celebrated. It felt like being part of a family as they invited everyone to eat food offered for the party, whether you knew the person being celebrated or not. This place is a secret gem that you would typically find from locals or from REALLY doing your research like I did. Make sure to have cash for the small cover charge!

Hope this helped you see that Detroit is the New Black!

DTW Airport Parking Information

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Parking Map

DTW provides short-term parking with the quickest access to the terminals along with more cost-effective long-term parking options. The McNamara and Big Blue Deck parking garages are located outside of the terminals, and the Green Lots are located a short distance from Evans Terminal.

The Green Lots have no height restrictions, so vehicles exceeding 7 feet high can use these parking lots instead of the covered garages. Courtesy shuttle buses transport passengers to and from the Green Lots with pick-up and drop-off from the ground transportation center.

Parking Fees

Green Lots 1 and 2 Parking Fees

24-hour daily: $15

Hot Tip: Airport parking lots have QR codes to scan to remember where you’ve parked and for directions to and from the terminals.

Pick-up or Drop-off Parking

DTW has 2 cell phone waiting lots — 1 located near Evans Terminal and 1 located near McNamara Terminal. Family and friends collecting passengers can remain in their vehicles for free within these lots until they are called for pick-up outside of the terminal.

Passengers can be dropped off curbside outside of the terminals, or by parking inside the short-term parking lots.

DTW has reasonably priced daily parking compared to other major U.S. airports. However, off-site parking lots can offer even cheaper rates. Using a third-party booking site such as airportparkingreservations.com , passengers can book parking from $12 per day.

These off-site parking options operate their own shuttle services to/from the airport, so although they are located further away, they still offer a convenient alternative to official airport parking.

Parking for disabled passengers is available in all parking garages and uncovered lots. High-mobility vehicles (not exceeding 8 feet, 2 inches) can be accommodated in designated areas of the Big Blue Deck and McNamara parking garages. Vehicles exceeding this size will need to utilize the Green Lots.

Car rental services are available in the northeast corner of the airport along Lucas Drive, and passengers can ride a courtesy shuttle bus to/from the car rental center from the ground transportation centers outside of both terminals.

DTW Airport Hotels

Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport

The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport is on-airport property — located at McNamara Terminal — and has its own security checkpoint for passengers to use.

Other hotels start at 1.9 miles from the airport and range from 2 to 4 stars. Many of these hotels provide courtesy shuttle services to and from the airport, and passengers can arrange parking at some hotels for the duration of their trip.

Located conveniently within the McNamara Terminal, the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport puts you nearby the Henry Ford Museum and downtown. The hotel offers a free shuttle between the airport’s external terminals, along with bypassing the long wait with direct access from the lobby to a private airport security line. Award nights at the hotel start at 30,000 to 40,000 points per night.

The Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Airport gives guests close proximity to the airport via a free shuttle, with the Henry Ford Museum, the University of Michigan, and downtown Detroit all within a half-hour. The hotel features an indoor pool, fitness center, restaurant, and 24-hour snack shop. Hilton does not publish an award chart, but you can expect an award night at the hotel to cost somewhere between 30,000 and 58,000 points per night.

The Holiday Inn Detroit Metro Airport is located close to the airport, only 20 minutes from the heart of downtown, and close to attractions like the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and Detroit Institute of the Arts. Amenities include an on-site restaurant, pool, and fitness center. Award nights at the hotel start at just 22,000 points per night.

Hot Tip: If you’re looking to top off your points to stay at any of these options, see our guides on the best ways to  earn more IHG One Rewards ,  Marriott Bonvoy , or  Hilton Honors points .

DTW is a modern and easy-to-navigate airport. That said, the airport lacks a train line connecting the 2 terminals, so passengers must know which terminal their airline departs from. Terminal shuttle buses are frequent but are often not as convenient as hopping on a train.

The airport has some interesting features to keep waiting passengers entertained, including a huge water feature in the center of McNamara Terminal with water jets representing the lines of a flight map.

Passengers walking between Concourses A and B/C can also experience a colorful LED light display and music in the connecting tunnel.

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Food service was bare-bone. Better bot to have any at all rather than hand out premade coffees and cookies to random few passengers.

Had assistance at airport getting from arrivals gate to departure gate; I couldn't have managed without that extra help. Thank you Delta.

They charge me for the luggage which is was included on the ticket

More space in the cabin. The guy in front of me leaned his seat back and I felt he was sitting in my lap.

Was a great smooth flight from Detroit to San Diego.

Late flight, always blaming the flight crew, stale almonds, pushy people. Why don’t they have the people sitting in the back board first? So much easier getting through an empty plane! Duh!!

The flight attendants were friendly and seemed to like their jobs. I am not a high maintenance person, but they seemed to respond to people's needs and requests in a timely fashion with a smile.. I appreciate the benefits of complimentary snacks and beverages, as well as the relatively inexpensive checked baggage fee. (Although I would like it better if it were free! :) ) The only improvement that could be made to make the boarding process more efficient is to board the plane from the back. The alternative would be to board people with only a personal item first. This would reduce the wait time while others are stowing their baggage.

Positive: Entertainment via phone on the short was great and my first time. Good food and wine and head phones for free. Negative: Seat hardly reclined on the long flight. Breakfast was an egg with a bun. No egg choices and rather have something sweet like bun/jam and Youghurt.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

Crew is way too many times on the intercom re explaining the same thing

Amazing comfortable chairs great snacks super friendly staff pilots did excellent job. Smooth sailing all the way. Definitely be flying United more.

We waited too long to get water while the plane was on the Tarmac awaiting de-icing.

The plane was delayed coming in and on the tarmac. I was coming from another flight so it made for a very long day. The stewardess kept trying to slam the overhead bins closed and I was worried that she had damaged my new luggage. They ran out of snacks and lccdsddd me a hummus box which was nice. It took them a very long time to pick up the garbage so I could not go to the washroom and had little time. To prepare for disbarment. The TV system was hard to control from the armrest and picture wasn’t clear. The crew did apologize several times for the lateness. It took the Denver airport an unusually long time to de-ice the plane.

By in large it was a good experience. The flight crew was great and that's the most important to me. Boarding was fine.

It was fine. Everything ran on time, crew was great.

Staff friendly and app worked really well. Modest delays were frustrating

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

They didn’t let me get my boarding pass through the app because I have a lap infant. The ticket said to see a gate agent but there was no gate agent available. I was supposed to go to the kiosk. Ended up missing my flight and they said that I never checked in to my flight so there was nothing that could be done. I will never fly spirit again. Not even worth the hassle and poor customer service.

Cancelled my flight , currently stuck in Houston and will likely miss my cruise

Passengers play their phones so everyone can hear them. No one tells them to use earbuds. Very annoying and unenjoyable.

I liked how we boarded early to combat all the chaos from people bringing oversized personal item luggage. It's so painful watching the process and feeling overwhelmed by the process.

Spirit Airlines has the worst customer service. I don't advise flying with them.

great customer service at the boarding gate that was warm and friendly. the flight experience with no complaints and the attendants were caring and attentive

It should be possible to get a cup of water at no cost. Not even asking for a whole bottle.

The issue I have is when we landed in Vegas (Dallas to Vegas). It seems as if we were traveling too fast during landing. I’m not sure what is was but it seems as if the nose of plane banged the ground making a loud bam nose. We went back into the air instantly. It took about 5 minutes for the pilot or someone to say a wind drift caused the hard landing, and that we would land in about 5 minutes. Many of us passengers did not believe the reason given. The second attempt was much smoother but this does not make me want to fly spirit again. The flight from Detroit to Dallas was fine.

I wish the cost of seats was included in the ticket

Spirit stranded it’s customers all across the country with a routine inspection that instead grounded several planes for days. Zero consideration or services for customers stuck in the middle of a trip. No hotel vouchers. No meal assistance. No help booking on other airlines. No refunds offered. Customers received a “we’re sorry” email and a credit toward another Spirit flight in the future. In my case, $50 credit which isn’t even close to amount of my fare. Not to mention buying another fare last minute on another airline or the extra night of hotel. I love saving money when flying, but in nearly three decades of air travel, I’ve never been treated so poorly. It’s criminal that a carrier can strand customers without any form of fair compensation. Never again.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Not have to pay for every single item to take a flight. Seating and delays sucked.

Terrible. Seats are bad and the baggage policy is inconsistent

Everything was good, and most importantly on time. They have been extremely tardy in some of my flights

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

It’s a cheap airline. I wish they had better seats.

The only issues had were outside of Frontier’s control or weren’t expected. It was a two hour flight they completed fast. We landed almost an hour ahead of schedule. The issues with no entertainment or food weren’t issues since there was no expectations. The issue of the loud or crying babies was outside of frontiers control.

Seats are cramped and very uncomfortable. You have to pay for everything and it is too expensive.

Smooth process and flight. My favorite kind. Uneventful and on-time!

Xmas Day- Flights were on time for departure and arrival, baggage check in and boarding process were hassle free, baggage also arrived without any delay. Satisfied customer on this journey.

Airfare sweet spots when flying to Detroit

The number of miles you need for a flight to Detroit will vary based on your departure city, airline, season and demand.

But there are a few tricks you can use to find the best points and miles for cheap flights to Detroit. For example, if Delta SkyMiles doesn’t offer good deals on your dates, you can use Air France Flying Blue miles or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points to book the same Delta flights with potentially a better deal.

But check Delta first. The airline sometimes has fantastic flash sales that could make using Delta SkyMiles a great value for flying to Detroit.

Book a Delta flight using Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points

The number of Virgin Atlantic points you’ll need for a seat on a Delta flight is based on the distance you’re flying. Costs are for each segment of your trip, so nonstop routes are usually the best value for your Virgin Atlantic points.

american travel detroit

For example, if you’re flying from Chicago, the flight to Detroit is about 245 miles, and based on Virgin Atlantic's award chart, an economy class seat for this trip would cost 7,500 miles each way, plus taxes and fees.

Book a Delta flight using Air France Flying Blue miles

Flying Blue doesn't have an award chart, so the number of miles you'll need for a flight on Delta will vary. For example, flying from New York-JFK to Detroit on July 24 will cost 11,500 miles, plus taxes.

american travel detroit

While flying from Los Angeles to Detroit on the same day costs 14,500 miles, plus taxes.

american travel detroit

If your travel dates are flexible, search a few different date ranges. Even if your dates are set, a search for alternate dates will give you an idea of whether you’re using the best points and miles for an affordable flight to Detroit.

Book a Delta flight using Delta SkyMiles

Delta award prices will vary based on date, demand and other factors. At times, Delta SkyMiles can offer great award prices to visit Detroit.

For example, a July 24 Delta flight from New York-JFK to Detroit would cost 7,500 miles in basic economy or 11,000 miles in the main cabin. What's more, the taxes and fees are lower than you would pay if you booked this flight with Flying Blue miles.

Travel credit cards to help rack up points and miles fast

If you’re using miles and points to book an affordable Detroit trip, the right credit card could be extremely helpful.

Delta credit cards

Several Delta Air Lines credit cards can help you earn SkyMiles for your trip to Detroit. They include the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card .

Chase credit cards

A rewards credit card not tied to any one airline, like a card that pays Chase Ultimate Rewards® or American Express Membership Rewards points, can get you greater flexibility for booking a Detroit trip, which can mean savings. That’s because these points can be redeemed for travel directly through Chase or American Express, or you can transfer them to airline partner programs.

For example, if you sign up for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you could get a stack of bonus points. Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Travel℠. Chase doesn’t partner with Delta, so you can’t convert your Ultimate Rewards® points into SkyMiles, but Chase does partner with Air France and Virgin Atlantic.

As we saw above, those two airlines’ points can be redeemed for Delta flights to Detroit.

Before you transfer your Chase points to another airline, see if you can get a better deal by booking a flight via Chase's travel portal.

AmEx credit cards

If you get an American Express® Gold Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Membership Rewards points you earn can be converted into Delta SkyMiles. Plus, American Express points also transfer to Air France and Virgin Atlantic, and are redeemable for flights through AmEx. So you have even more options to compare costs and get the best deal. Terms apply.

Lounges at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

Lounge access is a fantastic benefit to make your travel experience more enjoyable. If you have a Priority Pass membership, either paid or as a perk of a credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you’ll find one Priority Pass lounge option in DTW. The Lufthansa Business Lounge in the North Terminal offers Priority Pass members food, beverages and space to work or relax while you wait for your flight.

Delta has four Sky Club lounges throughout the airport. You can get in if you’re flying Delta in a premium cabin, have top-level elite status in Delta’s frequent flyer program or if you have one of several premium American Express cards.

Detroit plans for travel surge ahead of NFL draft

Visit detroit anticipates a significant economic boost.

Pamela Osborne , Anchor/Reporter

DETROIT – The excitement is building in downtown  Detroit  as more draft goers make their way into town.

“Over the next 24 hours, we’re going to start to see a lot more of the out-of-town fans coming to town, and by Wednesday, the city is going to be filled with people,” said Chris Moyer with Visit Detroit.

Visit Detroit anticipates a significant economic boost, with visitors projected to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars, a testament to the NFL draft’s impact on the city’s economy.

Hotel rooms in downtown Detroit are mostly booked. Moyer says some fans will stay at hotels in surrounding counties while others in Detroit have waitlists.

Airbnb says they still have plenty of availability for last-minute travelers despite seeing a 450% increase in searches in Detroit during the NFL draft.

Many of the guests booking for the Draft are from Michigan, places like Jackson, Saint Clair Shores and Grand Rapids. They’ve also seen quite a few people booked from Chicago and Toledo.

No matter where people come from, everyone hopes to see Detroit on the main stage, including 8-year-old Lorenzo Palac and his dad, who were checking out the progress on Campus Martius.

“We want to get a good look at there, where the inside, where all the lights are, and take a stroll downtown.”

The pair said this is likely as close as they’ll get to taking it all in.

Commanders pick DB Mike Sainristil in second round of 2024 NFL draft. What to know

american travel detroit

The Washington Commanders selected Michigan football defensive back Mike Sainristil with the 50th pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Sainristil spent five seasons with the Wolverines , twice serving as a captain, while capturing three Big Ten Titles and one national title. Here's everything you need to know about Sainristil:

Mike Sainristil scouting report

Sainristil is the poster child for turning a former wide receiver into a defensive back. His offensive instincts are clear when he breaks on passes as he has exceptional field awareness, body control and elite ball skills (as evidenced by his six interceptions this season). He has quickness, is incredibly intelligent and nearly every player in the secondary at some point in Ann Arbor last season cited him as their mentor. Despite his smaller frame, Sainristil is more than adequate in run defense.

Mike Sainristil height, weight

Sainristil is listed at 5-foot-9 and 182 lbs. He's an Everett, Massachusetts, native and attended Everett (Mass.) High School.

NFL DRAFT HUB: Latest NFL Draft mock drafts, news, live picks, grades and analysis.

Mike Sainristil college stats

Across 62 games with the Wolverines, Sainristil accounted for 108 tackles (70 solo), 13 passes deflected, four sacks, seven interceptions, two touchdowns and two forced fumbles;.

As a wide receiver, he tallied 36 catches for 532 yards and five touchdowns.

Mike Sainristil highlights

Sainristil, a consensus All-American, had an 72-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 49-0 rout of rival Michigan State, a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown against Rutgers and had multiple interceptions in a tight 30-24 road win over Maryland. But the play of Sainristil's college career was the last ball he touched in a college game. U-M led Washington by two touchdowns with less than 5 minutes left in the national championship when Sainristil intercepted Michael Penix Jr. and returned it 81 yards to put the game on ice and set up the final score.

Mike Sainristil pro day results

Sainristil put together "elite" numbers at the combine in the 4.47-second 40-yard dash and 10-foot-11 broad jump. He recorded "great" composite speed numbers for his 10-yard split (1.51) and shuttle (4.01) and "good" numbers in the 3-cone (6.99 seconds). All together, his relative athletic score – which was knocked for his smaller stature – finished at 8.51 out of 10, 333rd of 2,222 people at his position since 1987.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Detroit Lions 7-round NFL mock draft roundup: First-round trades, OL, DB are popular picks

Who will join the Detroit Lions this weekend during the 2024 NFL draft?

It's the biggest question of the week as the 2024 NFL draft hosted in downtown Detroit approaches, beginning Thursday evening and running through Saturday. 257 total players will be drafted, including what's expected to be seven players who will stick around in Detroit after the event is over to play for the Lions.

Entering Thursday, the Lions are scheduled to have seven picks , though that could change through trades to move up or down the draft board while the action is underway.

The draft question used to be the most pressing topic around the Lions for months due to the franchise's typical positioning in the top half of the first round, but the historical success of the Lions' 2023 question pushed back draft debates until February and moved Detroit down to 29th overall with their first selection, an unfamiliar territory for one of the new teams at the top of the NFL hierarchy.

JEFF SEIDEL: I love how NFL draft is coming to Detroit, even if this event is completely bonkers

It is nearly impossible to predict what a team will do in the draft, especially the Lions with general manager Brad Holmes at the helm , but here's a look at what NFL draft media is predicting the Lions will do in all seven rounds days before the draft.

  • Round 1, pick 29 : DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa
  • Round 2, pick 61 : WR Ricky Pearsall, Florida
  • Round 3, pick 73 : OG Cooper Beebe, Kansas State
  • Round 5, pick 164 : EDGE Brennan Jackson, Washington State
  • Round 6, pick 201 : DT Jowon Briggs, Cincinnati
  • Round 6, pick 205 : CB Johnny Dixon, Penn State
  • Round 7, pick 249: OT Ethan Driskell, Marshall

ESPN's Jordan Reid has the Lions scooping up cornerback Cooper DeJean at the end of the first round to secure one of the weaker positions on the current roster, then adding Ricky Pearsall to the offense in the second round. The back half of the draft is focused primarily on the trenches plus a late flier in the secondary.

  • Round 1, pick 29 : DL Darius Robinson, Missouri
  • Round 2, pick 61 : CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri
  • Round 3, pick 73 : OG Mason McCormick, South Dakota State
  • Round 5, pick 164 : WR Ainias Smith, Texas A&M
  • Round 6, pick 201 : CB M.J. Devonshire, Pittsburgh
  • Round 6, pick 205 : S Sione Vaki, Utah
  • Round 7, pick 249 : OT Nathan Thomas, Louisiana-Lafayette

NFL.com's Chad Reuter has the Lions focused on defenders coming out of Missouri in his seven-round mock. The Lions draft metro-Detroit native and versatile defensive lineman Darius Robinson in the first, followed by his teammate, hard-hitting cornerback Ennis Rakestraw in the second. Reuter has the Lions taking McCormick, one of the top division-2 prospects in 2024, as offensive line depth with the lone day-two pick. Smith is a speed threat at receiver, while the last three picks are depth options at position groups the Lions are expected to target. Vaki was an All-American safety who also played running back at Utah.

Pro Football Focus

Pro Football Focus conducted a seven-round mock draft with 32 analysts representing each NFL team. The Lions swung a big trade with the Indianapolis Colts, including one 2025 pick, to move up in the first round in this mock draft to get a top secondary prospect as well as another late-round trade.

  • Round 1, pick 15 : CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Mock Trade: Lions receive Pick Nos. 15 and 117; Colts receive Pick Nos. 29 and 61 and a 2025 third-round pick

  • Round 3, pick 73 : WR Brenden Rice, USC
  • Round 4, pick 117 (via Indianapolis) : OG Zak Zinter, Michigan
  • Round 5, pick 153 (via Jacksonville): RB Marshawn Lloyd, USC

Mock Trade: Lions receive Pick Nos. 153 and 236; Jaguars receive Pick Nos. 164 and 201

  • Round 6, pick 205 : S Omar Brown, Nebraska
  • Round 7, pick 236 (via Jacksonville) : OT Trente Jones, Michigan

PFF did what plenty of Lions fans are hoping happens on Thursday; the Lions trade up in the first round to grab Mitchell, a consensus top cornerback prospect , to address the weakness in pass coverage. The Lions gave up their second-round pick and a 2025 third in exchange for moving up 14 spots in the first and a fourth-round pick, which they currently don't own. The rest of the picks focused on shoring up the offensive line with local options from Michigan, as well as grabbing skill players from USC to improve on a team strength and secondary depth.

  • Round 1, pick 29 : DB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama
  • Round 2, pick 61 : OG Cooper Beebe, Kansas State
  • Round 3, pick 73 : S Javon Bullard, Georgia
  • Round 5, pick 164 : WR Jalen Coker, Holy Cross
  • Round 6, pick 201 : RB Tyrone Tracy, Purdue
  • Round 6, pick 205 : DT Jordan Jefferson, LSU
  • Round 7, pick 249 : OL Andrew Coker, TCU

CBS has the Lions taking a different cornerback, Alabama's Kool-Aid McKinstry, in the first round . Beebe and Bullard, a starting safety for Georgia who contributed to two national championships as an underclassman, are the day-two picks. Detroit picks up two Cokers, one at receiver and another on the offensive line, on day three along with running back and defensive tackle depth.

The Athletic

The Athletic's Dane Brugler also included trades in his seven-round mock draft and doesn't have the Lions making a selection on Thursday due to a trade down, netting two extra day-two picks. In his mock, the Las Vegas Raiders trade up to 29 to grab their hopeful starting quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., in exchange for a second and third-round pick going to Detroit.

  • Round 2, pick 44 (via Las Vegas) : OL Zach Frazier, West Virginia
  • Round 2, pick 61 : DT Braden Fiske, Florida State
  • Round 3, pick 73 : WR Ja'Lynn Polk, Washington
  • Round 3, pick 77 (via Las Vegas): CB Caelen Carson, West Virginia
  • Round 5, pick 164 : Edge Braiden McGregor, Michigan
  • Round 6, pick 201 : K Will Reichard, Alabama
  • Round 7, pick 249 : DB Johnny Dixon, Penn State

The Lions get more ammunition in this mock draft thanks to the trade that resulted in two extra Day-2 picks. The Lions addressed both the offensive and defensive line in the second round, followed by the passing offense and defense in the third. McGregor is another Michigan name linked to the Lions as a late option, while Brugler has Detroit drafting a kicker, another potential need, in the sixth round. He described Vaki, the two-way safety, as the prospect most likely to bite a kneecap before and said he'd fit in Detroit well.

Get to know LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, Lions' sixth-round pick

american travel detroit

Mekhi Wingo, a 2022 All-American who suffered injury setbacks during his draft year, is a disruptive force on the interior defensive line and was snatched up by the Lions in the sixth round on Saturday.

Wingo was named a third-team All-American in 2022 and was second-team All-SEC after making 46 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks. He missed five games in 2023 with a groin injury. Wingo, who just turned 21 in April, began his college career at Missouri but transferred to LSU after one year.

From a character standpoint, Wingo is a Lion through and through. He was named a permanent team captain and bestowed with the No. 18 jersey number, given each year to the LSU player who best represents the program's values. Instead of letting the groin injury end his college career, Wingo had surgery and returned in time to play in LSU's non-College Football Playoff bowl game.

Though the upside of Wingo's game lies with his pass-rushing ability, he was an elite run stopper during his college career. Over the last two seasons, he's made a combined 31 run stops. At 6-foot and 284 pounds, he has below-average height and weight.

The Mekhi Wingo file

Birthplace:  St. Louis, Missouri

High school: De Smet Jesuit

College: LSU

College major:  Mass communications

2023 stats : Eight games played, 25 tackles, five tackles for loss, 4½ sacks

Accolades:  LSU team captain, 2022 AP third-team All-American, 2022 AP second-team All-SEC, 2021 SEC Freshman All-SEC

Quotable: "Wingo has a short-armed, squatty body type with an inconsistent anchor, but his first-step quickness and shock in his hands often gives him early advantages. He has NFL starting potential as a three-technique in a four-man front, projecting as a not-as-explosive version of Ed Oliver," The Athletic's Dane Brugler said in his annual draft guide.

Combine measurements

Hand: 9¼ inches

Arm: 32 inches

Wingspan: 77⅞ inches

40-yard dash: 4.85 seconds (third out of 20 defensive tackles); 20-yard 2.77; 10-yard 1.63

Vertical:  31½ (seventh out of 22)

Broad jump: 9 feet, 1 inch (11th out of 21)

Bench press: 25 reps (ninth out of 10)

WHIAANHPI and SmithsonianAPA Unveil Joint Theme for 2024 Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: ‘Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future’

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center issue call for intergenerational connection, action, and reflection.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will convene over 1,000 AA and NHPI leaders on May 13 for a landmark celebration at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.

Today, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center are proud to present our joint 2024 theme for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month: “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future.”

Since the late 1970s, our country has recognized the invaluable contributions of AA and NHPI communities each May. For more than a decade, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and WHIAANHPI have collaborated to identify a national theme for AA and NHPI Heritage Month in consultation with the White House and community partners. Previous themes such as "I Am Beyond" (2014) and "Visible Together" (2023) have been warmly embraced, both by federal agencies and community-serving organizations, and have served as catalysts for meaningful dialogue around AA and NHPI identity.

The 2024 theme is an homage to our ancestors and invites all Americans to delve into the legacies, triumphs, and challenges that have shaped AA and NHPI communities. It embodies the spirit of our collective journey – one rooted in resilience and hope – and encourages us to forge intergenerational connections to honor our past and pave a durable path forward.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will use this theme to foster discussions during our May activities, including a landmark celebration on May 13, 2024, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. This historic convening, uniting over 1,000 AA and NHPI leaders spanning five presidential administrations, will mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the White House Initiative and the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders during the Clinton Administration. About Our 2024 Theme: “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future”

As the Nation observes Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month in May, we reflect on our rich heritage and storied past. From Indigenous Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities whose wisdom and knowledge helped to shape this country and continue to guide us today, to the immigrants and refugees who came to our shores in search of better opportunities, to the trailblazers who paved the way for progress across generations – our communities’ journey has been one of tragedy and triumph, adversity, and resilience.

Knowing our histories gives us power. Throughout the month, let us embrace the interconnectedness of our stories and honor the visionaries who came before us. Let us commit to spotlighting the myriad ways diverse AA and NHPI communities have enriched every facet of American life. And let us endeavor to build bridges across generations, experiences, and cultures to forge a future where all of us can thrive.

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI), established by President Joe Biden through Executive Order 14031, is charged with coordinating a whole-of-government agenda to advance equity, justice, and opportunity for AA and NHPI communities. The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC), established in 1997, strives to ensure the comprehensive representation and inclusion of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the Smithsonian’s collections, research, exhibitions, and programs. Through education initiatives, publications, and public programs, APAC provides new avenues to document, celebrate, and share the rich and diverse history, art, and culture of AA and NHPI communities. GVL initiates ‘Vision Visakhapatnam 2030’ meetings

Visakhapatnam: BJP Rajya Sabha member GVL Narasimha Rao held a meeting with representatives from the travel, tourism, and hotel sectors on Sunday as part of his “Vision Visakhapatnam 2030” initiative.

The meeting, aimed at identifying the possibilities of making Visakhapatnam a high-end tourist destination and preparing a road map for the same, was attended by AP Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Visakhapatnam Chapter Srinath Chittori, CII Vice-Chairman Granthi Rajesh and representatives from hotel, travel and tourism fields.

As part of “Vision Visakhapatnam 2030”, GVL had already held meetings with the representatives of shipping, pharma, fertilisers, chemicals and aqua sector industries from Visakhapatnam and arranged interactions of industry representatives with union ministers to prepare a road map for development of these sectors in Visakhapatnam region.

Meeting with the hotel and tourism sectors identified an acute shortage of skilled workers with hospitality, housekeeping, and culinary skills. GVL suggested that the tourism sector offers a great opportunity for training and employing the local youth by creating the necessary training facilities and infrastructure. He would coordinate with the government agencies for setting up such suitable facilities and infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, the MP stated.

Noting that there are no incentives or encouragement from the state government to the tourism and hotel sector and therefore even in a big city like Visakhapatnam, the occupancy rate of hotels is not more than 50 to 60 percent, GVL said that in such a situation, there is a need for the tourism industry to prepare an integrated plan for the development of tourism in Visakhapatnam region. This would require adopting innovative marketing ideas to position Visakhapatnam with its unmatched nature’s resources and beauty as a unique destination in the country, he said and concluded that promoting “Brand Visakhapatnam” and leveraging new infrastructure like the international cruise terminal would help establish it as a major tourist destination not just for leisure tourism but also for eco-tourism, conference tourism, medical tourism etc.
