  • General information

Manchester is one of the largest metropolitan cities in England and has a deep soccer history, with two of the largest names in the EPL – Manchester United and Manchester City – calling the city home. Manchester sits in Northwest England, not far from Liverpool, Yorkshire and the beautiful Lake District. It is renowned as a city of modern culture, specifically music. The vibrant culture and nightlife in Manchester drives its tourism market, as few places have such a wide spread of things to do and see in England.

Manchester is a must-stop on any EPL soccer tour and we highly recommend seeing the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford, which are the home-grounds of Manchester City and Manchester United, respectively.

England, the birthplace of soccer, is also home to some of the most legendary soccer clubs, soccer stadiums and soccer competitions in the world, including the FA Cup finals. England's national soccer team is the pride and joy (or disdain in some cases) of the country. England is one of eight national teams to have won the FIFA World Cup, which they did in 1966 when they hosted the finals. They also reached the semifinals of the UEFA European Championship in 1968 and 1996. The English Women’s National team’s most recent success was an impressive 4th place finish at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. England is also home to one of the world's best professional soccer leagues in the English Premier League, which boasts some of the top teams in the world and is home to several of the top players from around the world. The proud soccer tradition in this country make it a perfect destination for international soccer travel teams.

There is so much to do in England's capital city, London: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Piccadilly Circus, the London Eye, Madame Tussaud's, Tower Bridge, dozens of museums and art galleries, Trafalgar Square, Marble Arch, Hyde Park, Greenwich, the underground, the Tower of London. And don't forget that Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Arsenal soccer clubs, as well as the world famous Wembley stadium, are only a stone's throw away. Teams traveling internationally have the opportunity to visit the stadiums, and possibly see a match at one of these world famous clubs as well as Wembley stadium while in London.

Historic Chester, dating back more than 2000 years to Roman times, is an excellent choice as a base for exploring Northwest England and North Wales. En route to Chester, stop at world-famous Old Trafford Stadium, home of Manchester United, one of the world's most famous soccer clubs. Enjoy the museum and stadium tour, followed by a visit to the United megastore; then dine in the Red Café. Liverpool is an easy 30-minute ride from your Chester accommodation. Liverpool isn't that far away and an excursion to Liverpool includes memorable visits to Anfield, home of Liverpool F.C., and The Cavern, birthplace of the Beatles and the start of theirMagical Mystery Tour.

England is justifiably world famous for its majestic buildings, invention of soccer, and history dating back thousands of years. Throughout its long history, it's been a green and pleasant land, a sceptred isle and a nation of shopkeepers. It's stood as a beacon of democracy and a bastion of ideological freedom, as well as a crucible of empire and a cradle of class oppression. Magna Carta, the King James Bible and the welfare state were all dreamt up here, but then again so were beer bellies, Bovril and Mr. Bean. It's a nation of tea-tippling eccentrics and train spotters, of dog lovers and soccer fanatics, of punk rockers, gardeners, gnome collectors, celebrity "wannabees", superstar chefs, free-wheeling city traders, pigeon fanciers, cricket bores and part-time Morris Dancers. To many it's the most eccentric, extraordinary and downright incomprehensible place on earth. Welcome to England!

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Liverpool and Arsenal will then face off on July 31 at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, the 69,328-capacity home of the Philadelphia Eagles and another stadium that will host matches during the 2026 World Cup to be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Finally, Liverpool and United -- England's two most successful clubs -- will meet Aug. 3 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, marking the biggest club soccer game ever played at the 77,559-capacity Williams-Brice Stadium.

Liverpool, the current Premier League leaders, are set to have a new manager by the time they head to the U.S., with Jurgen Klopp having announced that he will step down at the end of the season . It will be Liverpool's first visit to the U.S. since 2019.

It is the second straight summer that Arsenal and Man United will face each other in the U.S., following their sold-out match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium this past July.

"It's great to be visiting the US again this summer," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said as part of the club's announcement . "Our matches against Manchester United and Liverpool will be great preparation ahead of the new season.

"Our tour last year was a real success and it's always an amazing experience to play in front of our passionate supporters in the US. We're looking forward to returning and seeing everyone again."

Last year, United played four preseason games in the U.S. in front of 235,168 total fans.

English Premier League: Travel Guide for a Soccer Game in England

Things to Know When Going to a Game in the World's Best Soccer League

premier league soccer tours

Interest in soccer has increased in the United States due to recent World Cup success and more games being shown on a variety of cable networks. NBC's deal with the English Premier League (known also as the Barclays Premier League or EPL) and Fox's deal with the Champions League have specifically brought Americans in touch with the most talented players of the world's most global sport. As fans now tune in to see their favorite teams and players on TV, they're also becoming more interested in seeing games live. Going to a soccer game overseas is the equivalent of going to a college football game in America. Fans show more passion during games than you can possibly imagine with each team having a series of chants that can be throughout the game. Given the ease of getting to England and our familiarity with the language, more Americans are finding themselves attached to the EPL. Here's what you need to know when planning to see your favorite English Premier League team in person.

Getting to England

First, you'll need to get to England, which is easy in the larger scheme of things, but obviously not cheap. Many airlines fly to London from the major cities in the United States.‎ The cheapest times of year to fly to London is between November and March, so that jives well with the EPL season. The best time to look for pricing to fly at those times is the end of August or the beginning of November. Traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays is historically the cheapest days to travel. The easiest way to look for flight is with travel aggregator Kayak unless you specifically know what airline you want to travel on.

Getting Around England

Once you're in England, you'll need to get to wherever you're watching your EPL game. ‎Six teams (as of 2019-20) are in London and taking the Underground (the English version of America's subway, not to be confused with an English subway, which is their version of an underpass) is extremely easy. Every EPL team in London is located near an underground station. The longest distance you’ll need to travel from Central London to see an EPL team is the hour it takes to visit Crystal Palace.

Getting around the country to other cities is just as easy. England's train system works very well and is quicker than driving. Every EPL city is within three and a half hours of London with Newcastle being the furthest away. Tickets for the train aren’t cheap (as is the same with trains in America) with prices starting at approximately 60 pounds each way and schedules are available at the National Rail website . You can obviously also rent a car and drive around the English countryside as you check out a game in the process.

Getting tickets for Barclays Premier League games is the hardest part of your adventure. Most good teams have large season ticket holder bases, which prevents many tickets from hitting the open market. The reason teams have large bases is because games aren't televised in England during the main 3 p.m. local time slot on Saturdays. (This is done to encourage fans to see lower level league games, providing revenue to keep them in business. The perception is that fans would rather watch their favorite EPL team on TV instead of seeing their local lower division team play.)

The best way to ensure getting tickets is by signing up for a team's membership. The costs are reasonable with the big Clubs (£30 – Everton, £43 – Tottenham, £28 - Chelsea & Manchester City, £27 - Liverpool, £35 - Manchester United, £34 – Arsenal) and there are two key perks for being members. The first is that members get a chance to buy available tickets after season ticket holders, but before the general public. You may never use the other features of the membership, but your goal here is to acquire tickets or else you wouldn't be reading this piece. Each membership gets access to only one ticket per membership during the initial membership sale, so you'll need multiple memberships for multiple tickets.

Tickets (cont.)

The second benefit is that some clubs have secondary markets that allow members have access to. Currently Viagogo services Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Queens Park Rangers. Arsenal and Liverpool run their own ticket exchange in-house. Tottenham has a deal with Stubhub , but a few other teams have tickets that end up there as well. Generally, the supply on the secondary market isn’t as much as you’d see for American sports.

Some slightly less talented teams allow ticket purchasing access to those who purchase tickets for a previous game in the season before those who haven't. It's a somewhat silly policy if there are people who want to go when Manchester United is in town get priority to buy tickets because they bought tickets for a Stoke City game earlier in the year. Then the home team loses out on concessions and merchandise sales when the fan most likely doesn't show for the Stoke City game. (On the contrary, the argument could be made that the Stoke City tickets would never have been sold anyway and this just adds extra revenue to the home team.)

Where to Stay

Hotel availability will vary based on what game you're attending, but generally, the home team's fans live in the city‎ where the game is taking place and the away team's fans go back to their city after the game since taking the train from city to city is so easy. You might want to do the same if you’re seeing a game at a smaller team outside of London and can get back with ease. Hotels in London will generally be more expensive, but you’ll be able to see and do more things in England. Those seeing games in London shouldn’t worry too much about staying near the stadium of the game they’re seeing. As mentioned above, getting to the stadiums are easy, so you might as well stay in a more enjoyable neighborhood. Wherever you stay, you use Kayak again to help with your hotels.

Pregame Festivities

As you'd expect, fans love to have a few pints before the game (and possibly a few after). ‎Bars around the stadiums are always packed before the game, so get there a couple hours before to bask in some local "football" conversation. Fans will start filling the grounds at least an hour and a half before kickoff to put up their flags on the facade of the stands (an English football tradition), sing the local Club's songs, and watch warmups. To tune up your voice, check out some of the lyrics before you go so that you can sing along in style.

How can I watch these soccer friendlies if I can’t attend in person?

If tickets are not your aim, many of these friendlies are still available via streaming or even on TV. For example, in the past, MLS All-Star Games aired on ESPN or FOX. Now that Apple has the MLS streaming rights, the MLS All-Star Game is available via MLS Season Pass. Other games are available via TV.

The full streaming schedule for the list of summer friendlies will be available on the full schedule of soccer games as those dates near.

How do these friendlies differ from other soccer matches in terms of rules and gameplay?

The main thing is that there is nothing of note on the line. For some, there are bragging rights. American-centric soccer fans would like to see the best of MLS compete against one of England’s top sides. Likewise, if there is ever a derby, there can be some international bragging rights, like Barcelona over Real Madrid based on USA friendlies.

Therefore, the gameplay is tamer than what some fans may be used to. Players are not diving into challenges or putting their bodies on the line as much as they would in a league or cup game during the proper season.

In terms of rules, there are some changes as well. One of the main ones is the lack of a limit on substitutions. Teams, particularly those out of Europe, want to interchange players to allow everyone to get some preseason action in. Also, games may not always end in draws. The MLS All-Star Game, for instance, will go to penalties if the game is tied. Other friendlies would settle with a draw, it truly depends on the competition.

Other ways to watch

Can’t make it to live preseason games in the USA this year, or out of your budget? You can still watch many of the soccer friendlies on TV or online. For instance, the schedule of upcoming games are always updated on our website. Many of the games may be available across streaming, too, including Fubo .

Why do teams play friendlies?

Friendlies serve two purposes for teams. First, they’re an ideal way to gain match fitness before a new season begins. For instance, European soccer seasons usually begin in August. Therefore, the games give coaches and managers an opportunity to play new star signings, as well as trying different formations. Second, the games generate more revenue for the teams and increase the size of the teams’ fan bases.

Historically, major soccer teams have been visiting the United States to play games for decades. For instance, Everton first played friendlies in the United States in 1956. Similarly, the first record of English teams playing in the United States was from 1905.

Nowadays, the summer soccer friendlies are an annual tradition in the United States.

Who plays in soccer friendlies?

Soccer friendlies provide a great opportunity for US fans to see their favorite international stars, sometimes in their own cities. Soccer friendlies also provide the chance for newer players to gain more experience.

For this reason, it’s up to each team’s manager (or coach) to decide who plays in the games. Some coaches prefer to give their youth stars an opportunity to get valuable playing time. Other managers like to build the team’s chemistry by playing the stars who will start the upcoming European season.

Do friendlies count?

Friendlies, also known as exhibition games, do not count for points. In spite of this, promoters sometimes entice clubs with a cup if they win their series of friendlies. For example, Relevent Sports launched the International Champions Cup as a way to make the friendlies more meaningful. Having said that, clubs rarely put much emphasis on winning these friendly competitions. At the end of the day, football teams play friendlies because the games grow fanbases and get teams ready for the new season. Preseason ranked games do not count for points.

You may wonder, what is a friendly in soccer? When soccer clubs first originated in the 1800s, there were no leagues or competitions. So, teams would play against each other in a friendly game. It wasn’t until 1888 when the Football League was created that teams faced each other in competitive games.

The Complete Guide to Buying Premier League Tickets in England

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: September 28, 2023

Everything you need to know about buying Premier League tickets in England – including tips and alternative tours.

If you’re into football – or soccer as you may well call it in your home country – then you might want to catch a Premier League game while you’re staying in England. Seeing some of the world’s top players in action as ‘the beautiful game’ plays out is a real thrill for a soccer fan. (That term was coined by the Brazilian player Pele, by the way, not an Englishman).

Men’s Premier League football is incredibly popular in England – it’s no exaggeration to say that many fans will do just about anything to see their team play. And would give anything to see them win too.

The game as we know it today is said to have originated in English private schools and involves teams of 11 men or women – though there is also an informal variation known as ‘five-a-side’. Previously seen as a ‘man’s game’, the English ladies’ team are now climbing up the rankings after their 2022 Euros tournament win.

At the time of writing, UEFA rankings show a number of English teams in the top ten, including Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. Arsenal is another popular and successful club, and like Chelsea is London-based. On a national and global scale, these are the five most popular clubs. ( Ted Lasso fans may be disappointed to hear that Richmond FC actually does not exist!)

So it’s easy to grab tickets for a game once you’re in the UK, right? Er, no. Completely wrong. If you want to see any of these clubs in action – or in fact any of the English Premier League clubs in action – then you’ll need to plan ahead. And cross your fingers.

The fact is that it’s incredibly difficult to get tickets. Even though Premier League ticket prices are so high. But don’t despair! We’re here to share all the insider info on the best places to buy Premier League tickets, to maximise your chances of getting inside the grounds.

Read on so you can secure your tickets to that match you’ve been desperate to see all your life. Or at least take advantage of an attractive alternative…

Let’s start at the very beginning. If you want to bag some EPL tickets – aka English Premier League tickets – then you’re going to have to be smart. So where better to grab some advice than from sources including the EPL themselves?

  • Plan well ahead

We really cannot stress this one enough! There’s no way – barring a miracle, really – that you’ll get Premier League tickets within a fortnight or even a month of the game. Even six months or more is often not enough time!

  • Only buy from club sites, ticket offices or authorised partners

Never, ever buy football tickets from an unofficial reseller. Why? Well, the main reasons are that these unauthorised ticket touts are out to rip you off, pure and simple. But money and fakes aside, there’s another good reason not to do that.

Resellers are notorious for placing unwitting ticket buyers in an undesirable position. This may be on the opposite home or away team’s side, or close to people who are known for causing trouble. There’s potentially more at stake here than simply losing a few pounds sterling, so stay away from sources that are not officially authorised.

  • It’s who you know

Many English Premier League tickets are all about who you know. If you do have contacts in the UK, then for goodness sake do ask around before you travel. A friend of a friend or a professional colleague might just know someone who was willing to pay the full Man City, Liverpool or Arsenal season ticket price to secure their seats.

Club members and those who’ve accrued loyalty points are far more likely to be able to help you secure tickets for that all-important match.

  • Look for a grade C match

Most English football clubs will place games in priority order, categorising them as grade A, B or C. A grade C match is far more likely to have available tickets than a grade A one, with grade B falling somewhere between the two.

If the club you want to see are playing against another popular team, then that’s only going to make securing tickets even more of a challenge!

Though the ladies’ teams are becoming increasingly popular, considering both men’s and women’s matches will also clearly give you more of a chance.

  • Get to know your club

As the EPL points out, each club has its own way of working. You should be able to find out about their ticket policies either via the website or by getting in touch with the club. Forewarned is forearmed!

Keep an eye on their social media pages too – you never know what info might pop up there.

  • Buy a hospitality package

Officially authorised hospitality packages can provide you with another way in. These can include other services such as parking, food and drink, programmes and souvenirs.

  • Go for second-best

If you can’t quite get to see your club in action, then why not book the next best thing? Which is to take a tour of the grounds. This often includes an insider peek at all facilities, including spots like the home and away changing rooms.

These can be fabulous experiences for any football fan in their own right – and can certainly help to make up for the disappointment caused by failing to secure tickets.

  • Listen to an expert

The Groundhopper Guide is THE go-to expert when it comes to the Premier League. So grab a copy of founder Paul Gerard’s Guide to Soccer in England for the full insider lowdown.

After reading this, you’ll be familiar with everything there is to know about English football, including where you can see them play or even meet them, as well as where to eat and drink before and after the match or your stadium visit.

A man standing at Anfield Football ground.

Stick with the advice of the EPL and only ever buy tickets from a club’s ticket office or website, or via their authorised partners. All clubs will be able to provide a list of these.

Never buy tickets from unauthorised sources – or ticket touts as they’re locally known. These could be fake or may never materialise at all, and could cost astronomical amounts. They may also place you on the rivals’ side of the stadium, which is not the best place to be.

It is very difficult, with many top level English clubs, to get hold of tickets if you’re not a member. But it doesn’t hurt to ask around, and enquire with the club themselves.

This membership requirement does of course make the clubs more money, and also helps them to keep track of the fan base – and on top of demand.

You can expect Premier League tickets to cost around £100 sterling each – or more. This is around USD $120. Membership is often required to secure seats, and this also comes at a considerable cost per season.

A hospitality package with other elements such as food and drinks, parking or souvenirs may cost more than this. For a bucket-list experience, though, many fans consider this money well spent.

The demand for Premier League tickets outstrips supply, it’s as simple as that. Even the latest and biggest new stadiums cannot provide enough seats for every fan who wants to see their team play live.

The closer to the match it gets, the more difficult this becomes. And it’s even more challenging when two big name teams are on the bill – such as Man City vs Man United, for instance.

The reality is that you might get lucky and secure seats to a really exciting match – but you may well not be so fortunate. Planning early and considering the alternatives well in advance is the best tactic, then at least you may have some chance of seeing the stadium and museum if not the players in action.

Buying a hospitality package (from an authorised source) or a stadium tour may well be your best bet if you want to at least see inside the world of English Premier League football and learn about their history.

You might pick up some really cool souvenirs to take home too!

Planning a Trip to Watch Soccer in England? Here Are Some Starter Tips

premier league soccer tours

The following are Groundhopper Paul’s best tips for planning a trip to watch soccer in England.

I have seen more than 100 games at more than 60 different stadiums and I have developed something of a system for planning my trips to watch soccer in England. So I thought I would share my process here.

Tip 1: When to See English Soccer

premier league soccer tours

Kickoff at Burnley’s Turf Moor.

Maybe your dates are fixed, like you have a couple days free in the middle of a family or work trip. Or maybe you’re planning a whole trip just for footy, which is something else entirely. Either way, I start with the master schedule for English soccer  to see what is happening on my weekend, or to pick a weekend or two for my trip.

For details on who is playing whom and where, I turn to the various websites with schedules:

  • PremierLeague.com for the Premier League.
  • EFL.com for the fixtures in the Championship , League One , and League Two .
  • EFL.com  for the EFL Cup, or Carabao Cup. ( What’s that ?)
  • TheFA.com for the FA Cup. ( What’s that? )

Important note: In England, the home team is listed first ! So a line that says Liverpool-Chelsea means that Chelsea is playing  at  (or “away to”) Liverpool.

Tip 2: Where to See English Soccer

Again, maybe this is pretty well fixed — you have a free day in London, for example — or maybe you’re roaming around. I have a helpful map on my English Soccer Clubs Page , showing all the top leagues in the country. With the fixtures list and this map, I have a list of all the games fairly close to where I will be.

If you’ll be in London, check out the amazing London Football Guide , which is updated weekly.

Important note: It’s around two hours by train from London to either Liverpool or Manchester.

Tip 3: Which English Soccer Game to See

fans watching game at fulham craven cottage

Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC in London.

Now we’re at the fun part! You know who’s playing and where you’ll be, but how do you know which game would be fun to see? This is assuming you aren’t tied to a particular club but just want to see a fun game, something with good atmosphere, a neat stadium, cool town, etc.

To work on this, I search for both teams in Google Maps and estimate the travel time between them. Shorter travel time means more visiting fans and a “cracking atmosphere.”

Next I look for rivalries and other “fun factors.” I check Wikipedia for the home team. There, I look for the following:

  • Is the visiting team one of their rivals?
  • How old is the stadium? (The old ones are cooler.)
  • Are their fans known for being rowdy?

I will also check the league tables (standings) at BBC.com to see how good both teams are this year. If the home team, especially, if having a good season, that will help the atmosphere. If the two teams are close together at the top or bottom of the table, that will crank things up as well.

If it’s a League or FA Cup game, it’s really fun to look for a team from a lower league playing one of the big boys. Everybody wants to see, for example, Manchester United have to play at Gateshead or something. Tickets will be tough, but what an event!

Important note: Another fun thing about Cup games is there are more visiting fans.

Tip 4: Getting Tickets to English Soccer

If it’s anything other than the Premier League, I just go to the home club’s website and get tickets from them. If it’s in the Premier League, getting tickets might be tricky . Also, if it’s a big rivalry game in any league, tickets will be harder to come by. For example, I once tried to get to a game between Nottingham Forest and Derby County and couldn’t figure out why it was sold out way in advance; well, it’s because they are 17 miles apart and hate each other!

Important note: I have a whole blog post about buying tickets for English soccer . Also, Groundhopper Soccer Guides is an authorized reseller of Premier League tickets.

Tip 5: Best Seats at an English Soccer Game

Before you buy your tickets, I suggest you consult two sources on where to sit — if you even have a choice in the matter. One is FootballGroundGuide.com , which does a great job of describing stadiums, towns, etc. Then I look at the club’s seating chart to pick my seats. The thing you’re looking for is where the visiting fans will be sitting . This is important, because they do the most singing, and what I aim for is to sit either right across from them (better to hear and see them) or in the home section closest to them, to enjoy the banter. Sitting across from them is how I get videos like this one:

Sitting near them is how even a dull game on a rainy night can be entertaining. See my report from Manchester City at West Ham .

Important note: Here is a whole blog post on deciding where to sit .

This guy definitely knows where the game is!

Tip 6: Getting to Your English Soccer Game

Okay, let’s assume you have now chosen your game and gotten your tickets. How do you get there?

FootballGroundGuide.com will tell you the closest rail station and how to get from there to the ground. To get to the right station, use the British train website .

If it’s in London, you’ll want the Tube’s  Plan a Journey page at tfl.gov.uk along with an Oyster Card or contactless debit/credit card.

Important note: All trains and stations after the game will be, as they say, “heaving.” Plan to have a snack or drink in the area after the game, then head over to the station. Speaking of which …

Tip 7: Before and After the Game

You will, of course, want something to eat and drink before the game. For this, I go back to  FootballGroundGuide.com for help. The thing to watch for is which pubs are for the home fans, and which are for away fans. (They are kept separate for safety’s sake!) You will often need to show your ticket to get into a “home” pub.

Speaking of this, and for seating at the game, be careful about what colors you wear; if you happen to wear, for example, red at Goodison Park (home of blue Everton), you’ll at least get stares. And home-fan pubs might not even let you in!

If you’re in a smaller town, find out what the local sights are. Who knew, for example, that Stoke is the home of Wedgwood China and its museum? (I found this out when I went to a game there. ) And I had a great time exploring lovely Reading before a game there.

You might also look into taking a stadium tour. Almost every club offers them, but never on match days. When I went to Fulham, for example, I toured Craven Cottage  the day before the game . You might also check out the National Football Museum if you’re in Manchester, which is actually an incredible hub for English soccer trips .

Planning a Trip to Watch Soccer in England: The Bottom Line

I hope this post has been helpful. The main thing I recommend to people — unless they are just focused on seeing one team in particular — is to get to an old stadium for a game between two pretty good teams with lots of visiting fans, and sit where you have a good view of not only the game but also those away fans. If you can find all that in a Premier League game, go for it. If not, at least you’ll save money and have an easier time getting into the game. And, for me, you’ll have a more truly English football adventure.

For the second straight year, Manchester United will conduct a preseason tour of the United States.

The Red Devils won’t be alone, with high-profile Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool coming to the U.S. ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

“The popularity of English football is continuously growing in the U.S., and we’ve come to expect passionate and enthusiastic support from our U.S. fan base,” said the club’s football director John Murtough. “They didn’t disappoint last year and everyone at the club is looking forward to reconnecting with those fans again this summer.”
