C.V. superintendent blasts board over cancellation of '30 Rock' star's anti-bullying visit

I n a letter to faculty, staff, and administration, The Cumberland Valley Administrative Offices voiced their disappointment with the School Board's decision to disinvite well-known actor and author, Maulik Pancholy to Mountain View Middle School. 

The letter was signed by Mark Blanchard, Superintendent; Greg Milbrand, Assistant Superintendent; Robyn Euker, Assistant Superintendent; and other members of the district administrative offices. CBS 21 received the letter from an anonymous source. 

It said they believe Pancholy's assembly should have been allowed to happen.  

The letter reads:

"Without a real opportunity for administration to answer questions and/or provide guidance, the Board made a decision that has had significant ramifications for our school community, especially for our students and staff who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. "

The letter continues on to say as a public school, it is their responsibility to serve the entire community. 

"No one should be made to feel that who they are is less than anyone else. Mr. Pancholy's visit would have reinforced for our students the importance of treating all people with dignity and respect, even if we disagree with or do not understand something about them."

Pancholy's invitation was taken away after board members scrolled through his professional website.

The decision comes after a Cumberland Valley School District board meeting Monday night, where board member Bud Shaffner made a motion to vote on rescinding an invitation for Maulik Pancholy to visit Mountain View Middle.

In a unanimous 8-0 vote, the decision was approved to rescind Pancholy's invitation.

Pancholy, of "30 Rock" and "Weeds" fame, was planned to visit the school on May 22 of 2024.

CBS 21 reached out to the district as to why the decision was made and the following statement was provided:

Each year, our principal at Mountain View Middle School works together with staff members to identify award-winning young adult authors to visit with students. In the past, authors have given a presentation as part of a unique educational experience for students. The visit was not on the board's original April 15, 2024, agenda. However, during the portion of the meeting in which board members may bring up additional items for consideration, one board member motioned to rescind the invitation to this year's scheduled visit by author Maulik Pancholy to Mountain View. Ultimately, the board voted not to allow the visit.

CBS 21 also spoke with Shaffner who stated that "the reason that the motion was made and the reason that it was voted upon and then agreed unanimously by those board members present is because he (Pancholy) lists himself as a political activist we just cannot allow politics to be in our schools."

Shaffner also stated that the board has tried to prevent politics from entering district schools since a 2016 controversy where then presidential Republican nominee, Donald Trump, was approved to host a rally at Cumberland Valley High School.

"Due to the backlash we received, we did form a policy that no political speaking could be done in our schools," Shaffner said.

Even though CVSD provided the same offer for Trump's opposing presidential Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, Shaffner says the district was criticized for the decision to allow the rally at all.

A petition has also been created by Trisha Comstock, a local Cumberland County resident, in an attempt to re-instate Pancholy's appearance at the middle school.

Comstock said she believes Pancholy was disinvited from the school because of his sexual orientation.

"He was cancelled because he's gay," Comstock said. "I don't see a reason why you would say 'he's a homosexual' and 'he's proud of his lifestyle and that shouldn’t be imposed in our students,' if that wasn’t your concern."

The petition cites that Pancholy was going to be at the school to host an "empathy and anti-bullying assembly."

CBS 21 also scrolled through Pancholy's website, finding no mention of the specific phrasing of "political activist", but there is a section on the website titled "activist."

That section included different organizations that Pancholy is a part of such as anti-bullying non-profit  acttochange.org .

"Attending an an assembly to learn about other people's differences, I don’t know where the concern with that," Comstock said.

Comstock said she's in talks with Pancholy to have him come speak with students outside of school hours. 

Shaffner said they haven't had another board meeting since the motion was passed on Monday. He said there could be a compromise if the board is promised Pancholy won't engage in political discussion, or if the event is held outside of school hours. 

CBS 21 News also reached out to Pancholy's media team. Pancholy posted a video to Instagram responding to the cancellation.
