Cruise Port Guide Port Klang – Malaysia: dock at Port Klang Cruise Centre

This is usually where cruise ships dock, although there is the occasional exception. Check with the front desk onboard of your cruise ship where they will dock in Port Klang. The Port Klang Cruise Centre has all the facilities you could ask for: currency exchange, wi-fi, taxi information desk, atm, tourist information and souvenirs shops. The location of the cruise terminal is not ideal though. You basically arrive in the middle of nowhere in a huge industrial port. Therefore the cruise line should offer a shuttle service, but this is not always the case. If your ship provides a shuttle they usually take you to Klang, which is the closest town to the Port. This is often not at an ideal location to get further afield. Check the details with your cruise line about the drop off location. If your ship does not offer a shuttle or if the shuttle does not go to a convenient location than a shore excursion or taxi would be the way to go. You can pre-arrange your excursion online or through the ship. You can also arrange a taxi through the taxi information desk inside the terminal upon arrival.

Taxis in Port Klang

The official taxis have a blue, red and/or white color and they have a meter. The taxi prices are listed in the terminal. Keep the following prices in mind:

Two ways to Kuala Lumpur from the cruise terminal including sightseeing for max. 4 people will cost you 85 US dollar / 250 RM.

One way to Klang (to for example the train station) is = 18 US dollar / 50 RM.

Public Transportation: ferry to Crab island and train to Kuala Lumpur

There is no public transportation available in the port. You could however take a taxi to the train station in Klang and pick up the train to Kuala Lumpur or the Batu Caves. You can also catch the ferry to Crab Island just down the road from the train station. The taxi to the train station should cost 18 US dollars one way. The train goes very frequent, it is incredibly cheap and reliable. Click HERE to see the train schedule from station Pel. Klang to KL Sentral and Batu Caves. For more information about the trains visit:   http://www.ktmb.com.my

Destination and distance from port:

Pel. Klang train station = 14 km drive east

Klang = 22 km drive north east

Kuala Lumpur = 60 km drive north east

Batu Caves = 70 km drive north east

Sightseeing:

Port Klang (Malay: Pelabuhan Kelang or Pelabuhan Klang) is the principal port in Selangor, a state of Malaysia. It also serves as the port for the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most developed region where the capital Kuala Lumpur is located. There is not much to see or do in Port Klang itself.

Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is a mangrove covered island off the coast of Port Klang. The entire village on the island is built on stilts, making it an interesting day trip. How to get there: Take a ferry from the Pulau Ketam jetty beside (and not inside) the Passenger Cruise Terminal. There are about 15 trips a day and the journey takes about 30 minutes.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

If you want to go to Kuala Lumpur a cruise excursion might be the way to go, as traffic can be horrendous.

The Port Klang bus and taxi terminal is inconveniently located about 1km inland from the port area. One can walk the distance but the heat, noise and pollution may make it an unpleasant experience.

Taxis have fixed rates, posted in the terminal. Expect to pay over $85 for a sightseeing tour to Kuala Lumpur.

The railway station is located 13 km outside the port area. KTM Komuter, Klang Valley's commuter train network, links the station with Klang (20 minutes) and Kuala Lumpur (one hour 10 minutes) with trains once every 15 minutes during peak hours, and once every 20 minutes during off-peak hours. You will need a taxi to the train station. Expect to pay around $20 for the short taxi ride.

In Kuala Lumpur there is a Hop on/off Bus to show you the sights.

Port Klang Day Trip: 10 Hours in Port Klang & Kuala Lumpur

port klang cruise center

Exclusive to TTI readers: From now till 30th September 2018, book a 4-night Port Klang & Phuket Cruise at only S$399*. Applicable sailing dates: Nov 5 , Nov 12 , and Nov 19 . Promo code and other details below!

Most Singaporeans do not see Kuala Lumpur as a short getaway destination — the developed cityscapes simply remind us too much of home. Like, no one goes back to the CBD during weekends for the same reason. It is hence, to my surprise, just how much of a shopping and food paradise Kuala Lumpur and the nearby town of Port Klang are.

If you enjoy shopping and eating as much as I do, I’d like to re-introduce Port Klang & Kuala Lumpur to you. Besides being the birthplace of Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang also has a great variety of local foods that go easy on the wallet. Not to mention, 3 of the largest malls of Malaysia are also within an hour’s drive from Port Klang.

Here’s a list of MUST-EAT-SEE-DOs if you’re visiting Port Klang & Kuala Lumpur on a short trip. For us, we had 10 hours to spare during our 4D3N cruise from Singapore to Port Klang. If you’re here on a cruise too, read till the end for our itinerary, ideal for cruise-goers too.

Travel Essentials for Port Klang

Kuala Lumpur Merchant lane cafe - voyager of the seas

Essentials: Bring around ~RM150 in cash.

Things to Do in Port Klang – Kuala Lumpur

1) indoor roller coaster at berjaya times square.

Berjaya Times Square mall - Port Klang Day trip guide

The Berjaya Times Square is the largest shopping mall in Malaysia, and it’s practically shopping haven for all shopaholics out there. The highlight of the giant shopping mall is actually the indoor theme park, and of course, its the largest indoor theme park in Malaysia.

Berjaya Times Square Indoor theme park - Port Klang Day trip guide

Entrance Fee: RM60/pax Address:  Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, Level 5 & 7, Berjaya Times Square, No.1, Jalan Imbi, 55100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Opening Hours: 10AM – 10PM daily

2) Highest Point of Malaysia at Petronas Twin Towers

Petronas Twin Towers - Port Klang Day Trip Guide

What’s a visit to the capital of Malaysia without a visit to the tallest building in Malaysia? In fact, standing at 452m, the  Petronas Twin Towers  were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004, and are still the tallest twin buildings.

Petronas Twin Towers sky bridge - Port Klang Day trip guide

While both towers are office spaces, there’s also a retail mall, an aquarium, a Science Center and an art gallery at the base of the towers. The tower is open for visits to the highest level. One can get up to both the sky bridge and the highest vantage points of the twin towers for RM80/pax.

Entrance Fee: RM80/pax Opening Hours: 9AM – 9PM (Tue-Sun). Closed on Mondays Address:  PETRONAS   Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

*Pro-tip: There’s a free city shuttle bus (GOKL bus) that takes you from the CDB of KL to the Petronas twin towers.

3) More shopping at ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre

aeon bukit tinggi mall - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

If you just wanna explore Port Klang and its proximity without travelling all the way to KL, there’s a shopping mall around the Port Klang area (20 mins drive). ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre is the largest ÆON (JUSCO) in Malaysia. It is definitely a one-stop mall for everything you’ll need if you’re ever missing something while on a cruise.

Address:  Persiaran Batu Nilam 1, Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2, 41200 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 10AM – 10PM daily

What to Eat in Port Klang – Kuala Lumpur

1) bak kut teh.

Ah her bak kut teh port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Port Klang is most famous for her Bak Kut Teh, and there are so many different Bak Kut Teh stores around Port Klang to satisfy your different cravings. Be it the Teochew clear soup version, or the Hokkien dark soy sauce version, or even the dry version — where the broth is simmered to a thick gravy.

We were recommended Ah Her & Samy Bak Kut Teh (亚火三美肉骨茶)  by our driver, stating that the “thick soup is very tasty” and has very tender meat. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try it for ourselves this time, but I’m sure I will the next time I visit Port Klang!

Address: 1, Jalan Lang, Taman Berkeley, 41150 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 8AM – 2PM daily

2) Chola Kitchen’s Nasi Briyani

chola kitchen briyani port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Port Klang is perhaps most famous for her Bak Kut Teh, but knowing Malaysia, good food is literally everywhere. So, we looked beyond Bak Kut Teh and went on to seek different cuisine to satisfy our bellies.

What we found good was the Nasi Briyani in Klang and  Chola Briyani is definitely the place to go. The Mix Briyani with Chicken + Mutton (RM19) is a good tummy stuffer, but if you’re looking for something lighter, we recommend the Aloo Gobi (RM12.70) or the Prawn Chukka (RM12.10). Vegetarian dishes available too.

Cost: RM4-23/dish Address: No., 33, Jalan Mahogani 5, Bandar Botanik, 41200 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 9:30AM – 10:30PM daily

3) Merchant’s Lane (美真林)

merchant's lane cafe - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

An hour’s drive from Port Klang, this Insta-worthy cafe in Kuala Lumpur sits on the second level of a plain-looking shophouse — blink and you’ll miss it, if not for the snaking line outside its doors before it even opens for business. Merchant Lane has both indoor and outdoor sitting, with the latter a more popular choice among youngsters; a vintagey garden & floral themed space where one can enjoy a cup of cappuccino feeling like a garden gnome Thumbelina amongst a forest of pastel greens.

Cost: Mains @ RM20-32/dish; Drinks @ RM8-17 Opening Hours:  11:30AM – 10PM (Weekdays), 9:30AM – 10PM (Weekends). Closed on Wednesdays Address: 150, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Our Port Klang Day Trip Itinerary — Ideal for Cruisers

9:30am: breakfast at merchant’s lane cafe (美真林).

Merchant's lane cafe kuala lumpur - Reasons to go on a cruise

We ordered an Earl Grey Latte that tastes as delightful as it looks. For mains, we ordered the Kaifan, Breakfast, and Hongkie Beef Stew. The diverse food variety from Western to Chinese, with cheekily christened dish names, really gave a lasting impression in an otherwise saturated-F&B industry.

merchant's lane food - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

11AM: Berjaya Times Square’s Indoor Theme Park

berjaya times square theme park - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Spanning three levels, the theme park not only has mild family-friendly rides but also thrilling rides that adrenaline junkies would love. We challenged each other to high-speed rides, a multiple-inverted coaster that spin 360°, and even bumper cars. We spent about an hour in the theme park while our shopaholic friends conquered the shopping areas within the mall.

1PM: Highest Vantage Point of KL on the Petronas Twin Towers

petronas twin towers - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

The Petronas Twin Towers is definitely the most iconic of all of Kuala Lumpur, and it is also there where one could get the best vantage point of the whole of KL. We got up to level 86 of the twin towers and got to view the capital of Malaysia from the highest point.

2:30PM: More Shopping at ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre

Aeon bukit tinggi port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Okay, the recurring theme for our Port Klang-KL day trip is “the biggest..” Well, no prizes for guessing where we went to next.. yup, the ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre — the biggest Aeon Mall in Malaysia.

Lavender bakery in aeon shopping mall - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

In ÆON, we headed to Lavender , a bakery famous for its dense bite-sized cheesecakes.  Besides Lavender, there are also many retailers from clothing to household. It definitely is the perfect last-minute shopping location, if you ever need more toiletries that is not available on the cruise, get them at ÆON!

4PM: Early Dinner at Chola Kitchen’s Briyani

chola kitchen briyani food - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

After a day’s of fun and shopping, our stomachs growled and called for food. We swung by Chola Kitchen, which was just opposite ÆON mall and had an early dinner. The Nasi Briyani was on point, so was the Aloo Gobi. Yumz!

We left at 5PM and made our way to Boustead Cruise Centre, calling it a day at Port Klang-KL. The car ride back takes about half an hour, but do factor in more time as the traffic conditions in both KL and Port Klang can be rough especially during peak hours.

With this Port Klang day trip guide, we hope to have shown you how to maximise a day when your cruise docks at Port Klang, so go on and explore~

Convenient and cheap parking - Boustead Cruise Center

Convenient and cheap parking

I took a cruise holiday last week. At first ,considered to take Taxi to this area. However after I found out that the parking fees only RM20 per entry ( parked for 4 days ) it is worth driving my own car and parked at the yard. Huge parking space and guarded. Comfortable facilities but with limited shopping area.

Taxis are very expensive from the cruise terminal for couples, try and join another couple or you will be disappointed. The taxi drivers we spoke to weren’t interested in the Malaysian Ringitt, they wanted the US dollar, and so would do business with us..this was at the terminal...outside of the terminal they asked for ridiculous amount. As we have been to KL many times we just wanted to go into the local town , but were quoted $100, $150, $200..we walked back to the ship and didn’t bother..Book a tour before you reach Pt Kelang.

Had visited this over stoppage time Genting dream cruise. The shopping options are fairly less and it is expected as it is just a Cruise Center. We found the chocolate options at the very first shop to be attractive.

For everyone going on a sea cruise from KL this is the location to board in West Port, Port Klang. It is an approx 45-90mins drive from KL but may be longerr during peak hours. Overnight parking at the time of writing is RM20/per car/per cruise. The car park is big. Facilities in the cruise center is good with space for loading and unloading. Immigration is quite efficient too. Ship boarding and disembarkation in on the 2nd floor. During peak hours be prepared to queue and wait for 30-45mins before boarding. Overall the building is clean and well ventilated.

If you're taking a cruise that stops in Port Klang, Malaysia you'll soon learn about the taxi mafia waiting for you if you choose not to take a cruise tour. The price board says it's 280 MYR for a day tour to KL where the taxi driver waits for you at each location and brings you back. If you say you'd like to go to the Batu Caves they try and charge you an extra 100 MYR and will not accept anything less even though the caves are a mere 10 min drive from downtown KL. Don't accept their price. Take the lowest one-way fare to downtown KL and negotiate with the driver once in the car. You should not pay more than 280 MYR for the whole day. We weren't worried about getting stuck in KL as there are at least a hundred drivers working for Grab (Uber in Malaysia) who would have drive us back to the port for a fraction of the rate the taxi mafia wanted at the cruise port. They think they have you captive but they don't. Just negotiate with the driver once you've left the port! We were on Royal Caribbean and our cruise arrived at 7am and left at 3pm. That was more than enough time to see the Batu Caves, Petronas Towers, shop I'm Chinatown and in the Central Market. We left as soon as we could disembark and were back on board by 130pm. We could have done more but torrential rain started. We wanted to leave KL before the drowned rats started floating up on the streets.

We had previous visited on a cruise and were impressed with facilities. Four years later and we still received the same excellent service in disembarking for our shore excursion and then re-embarking later in the afternoon. The terminal is five stories in height and linked by a long walkway to the cruise ship. There are dedicated immigration counters and duty free outlets, souvenir and gift shops, food and beverage outlets, and on both occasions that we visited, numerous market stalls selling a variety of good quality assorted merchandise at very reasonable prices. Free WIFI but it can be slow with hundreds of passengers accessing. Sit in airconditioned comfort while you surf or shop or enjoy a snack., I'm only rating as four stars based on our experience as we cannot comment on the embarkation or disembarkation processes with accompanying baggage or use of other facilities which include transport and tour services
