USS Pampanito: What It's Like to Visit this WWII Submarine Museum

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: September 4, 2023

The USS Pampanito SS-383 is a WWII Balao-class fleet submarine. This historical vessel is now a famous floating museum in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood.

This important sub went out on six patrols in the Pacific during World War II. During these tours, it sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others.

The USS Pampanito in San Francisco's Fishermans Wharf

It is open every day (including major holidays) from 10 am to 6 pm.

Disclaimer : I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

Touring the Submarine

If you are a military history buff or have never been on a submarine before, I highly recommend touring the USS Pampanito SS-383. Here are pictures and some details about what it's like to go inside it from my last visit.

The tour starts at the back of the submarine. The first room you will enter is the torpedo room.

Several torpedoes are on display here. The room is very small, which gives you the chance to get a close look at these massive weapons.

The torpedo room in the USS Pampanito in SF

This is where they would load the torpedoes at the back of the USS Pampanito.

From here, you walk behind the stairs you came down to enter the first of two engine rooms. These are some of the controls used to manage the submarine.

This is the main engine control panel.

After walking through the second engine room, you'll come upon the sleeping quarters. According to the audio tour, the USS Pampanito had only two bunks for every three people on board. Since at least one of them was always on duty, they didn't need a bunk for each person.

The sleeping area in the USS Pampanito Submarine in SF

The next room you will enter is the small mess hall. This is where everyone ate and hung out when they weren't on duty. There was only a little bit of room, and this area was almost always crowded.

The final room you will enter below deck is the room where they planned the missions.. This room is full of interesting controls, lights, and more.

Make sure you spend some time looking at this route map. It shows the routes for all of the missions for the USS Pampanito SS-383.

This panel was known as the Christmas Tree. It has both red and green lights. All lights had to be green before the submarine could start its journey.

After you finish in this room, you'll head back upstairs to the main deck. These are just a couple of pictures from this area of the submarine.

Additional Touring Details

While visiting the submarine is a fantastic experience, there are a few things you need to know. This SF museum was only slightly modified to accommodate visitors visiting it. This means the entire tour is in close quarters.

There are only two sets of stairs. Each one is STEEP. They are more like ladders than stairs. Here is a look down the first set of stairs.

Steep stairs leading down into the USS Pampanito museum in SF

The doors are also small. Here is an example of the doorways that you will need to pass through to get from room to room.

A small doorway in the USS Pampanito in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf

Since it is such a tight fit inside, I don't recommend this tour for those who are claustrophobic or have difficulty getting around tight spaces. It will most likely be an unpleasant visit.

Note: If you still want to see a WWII vessel without being so cramped, then I recommend heading to Pier 35 and visiting the SS Jeremiah O'Brien . It is a World War II Liberty ship, and offers more room to move around it.

Tickets & Tours

You can buy tickets online or in person for this tour. It's usually not too busy here, so you won't have any problems buying tickets at the time of your visit.

You can spend as much or as little time on the USS Pampanito as you want. The audio tour takes about 35 to 40 minutes if you let it run without pausing. It runs at a good pace and gives you plenty of time to look around each room.

It is open seven days a week starting at 10 am and closing at 6 pm. This includes most major holidays.

Admission Prices

  • Adults : $30
  • Seniors (62 and over) : $20

Finding the Museum

The museum is in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf. Here is a map showing its location.

He was very knowledgeable about the area and we enjoyed all the info he shared with us. So glad we booked this tour. We were only in Catalina for the day as we were on a Disney cruise. The pick up for the tour was very close to where we disembarked. Great way to see Catalina. Read more Written March 28, 2024

We used Trip adviser for some of our excursions, and it made choosing and booking things we wanted to do very easy. There was only one slight disappointment, because there was no mention some places were closed seasonally, but that was OK because there was still plenty of things to do. That is the only reason I didn't rate it a 5. Read more Written March 27, 2024

I had searched "jeep tours" on google and this was one of the first to pop up. I hadn't realized when I booked this one it was not a jeep at all. Full honesty I was nervous I was going to super disappointed after seeing the cool Hummer and Jeep tours going on, on the island all weekend. It ended up being perfect! It was really rainy and chilly most of the day so it was nice to be inside the van in a temperature controlled environment lol. Our driver was really nice, knowledgeable, and had a great eye for spotting the wildlife! This tour was half price of even the other tours cheapest offerings. I would definitely recommend. Unfortunately our experience was very poor too. The vehicle is just so-so (quite cramped and not very comfortable). The driver was extremely rude and had no consideration for the passengers. He was constantly whining about the laws of California and the cost of living. They make one brief stop at Airport in the Sky- at which point you are explicitly told to not buy anything to eat or drink as it is a very short stop. Came back feeling unpleasant and like it was a waste of 2 hours of our time. We did a golf cart tour with a different company in the afternoon which was excellent and showed Santa Catalina island in much more detail. Strongly felt like we should have avoided this tour. Ringo Starr addresses the crowd.

Over 60 years have passed since The Beatles’ historic Ed Sullivan Show performance in February 1964.

Still, at 83 years young, Sir Ringo Starr shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

In addition to releasing the four-song EP “Crooked Boy” on April 20, the former Beatle just announced a fall 2024 North American tour with his All Starr Band which includes Edgar Winter, Colin Hay from Men At Work and  Toto  singer Steve Lukather among others.

The eight-show jaunt wraps at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Prior to the tour, Starr and co. will put on a brief spring Las Vegas residency with a few West Coast gigs in California and Texas sprinkled in for good measure.

For fans that can’t wait to sing along with Starr to “Yellow Submarine,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “With A Little Help From My Friends” and so many timeless classic hits live, tickets for all shows can be yours as soon as today.

Although inventory for the newly announced tour dates aren’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Ringo Starr tickets 2024

A complete calendar including all U.S. and Canada tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Ringo Starr set list

With way more than a half century’s worth of music under his belt, it’s likely not easy for Starr to compile a set list with such a large catalog.

In any event, here’s what he plays at most shows on the road these days, based on our findings at  Set List FM .

01.) “Matchbox” (Carl Perkins cover) 02.) “It Don’t Come Easy” (Ringo Starr song) 03.) “What Goes On” (The Beatles cover) 04.) “Free Ride” (The Edgar Winter Group cover) (with Edgar Winter) 05.) “Rosanna” (Toto cover) (with Steve Lukather) 06.) “Pick Up the Pieces” (Average White Band cover) (with Hamish Stuart) 07.) “Down Under” (Men at Work cover) (with Colin Hay) 08.) “Boys” (The Shirelles cover) 09.) “I’m the Greatest” (Ringo Starr song) 10.) “Yellow Submarine” (The Beatles cover) Set Without Ringo

11.) “Cut the Cake” (Average White Band cover) (with Hamish Stuart) 12.) “Frankenstein” (The Edgar Winter Group cover) (with Edgar Winter) Ringo Returns

13.) “Octopus’s Garden” (The Beatles cover) 14.) “Back Off Boogaloo” (Ringo Starr song) 15.) “Overkill” (Men at Work cover) (with Colin Hay) 16.) “Africa” (Toto cover) (with Steve Lukather) 17.) “Work to Do” (The Isley Brothers cover) (with Hamish Stuart) 18.) “I Wanna Be Your Man” (The Beatles cover) 19.) “Johnny B. Goode” (Chuck Berry cover) (with Edgar Winter) 20.) “Who Can It Be Now?” (Men at Work cover) (with Colin Hay) 21.) “Hold the Line” (Toto cover) (with Steve Lukather) 22.) “Photograph” (Ringo Starr song) 23.) “Act Naturally” (Johnny Russell cover) 24.) “With a Little Help From My Friends” (The Beatles cover)

Ringo Starr new music

Even at his advanced age, Ringo is still doing the dang thing and putting in work.

In October 2022, the former Fab Four drummer dropped the  four-song “EP3”  with his All-Starr Band.

Composed of feel-good anthems and sing-a-longs, somehow the lad from Liverpool is still bringing the goods.

Ultimate Classic Rock  called the short offering “genuine and infectious.”

'Falling Behind': Navy Criticized for Delays in Shipbuilding, Deployments that May Leave US Behind China

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro tours Bayonne Dry Dock

Lawmakers dug into the Navy 's shipbuilding efforts on Wednesday, saying that it is "behind" in providing ships to stay apace of global competition, specifically with China.

The criticisms were raised when Department of the Navy leaders, including Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Eric Smith, met with members of the House Appropriations Committee's defense panel to discuss the Navy's shipbuilding and maintenance shortfalls.

The Navy has admitted that all of its key shipbuilding programs -- from the new Columbia-class submarine to the new Constellation-class frigate -- are facing yearslong delays, which come amid cases of ships being delayed to deploy because of mounting maintenance issues.

"I'm concerned that the Navy is falling behind -- it is behind," Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Calif., the chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said Wednesday. "The Navy continues to retire ships faster than it builds them, and I'm troubled by the Navy's request to decommission 10 ships before the end of their service life and build only six."

While the service pointed to the fact that many of those programs are building first-in-class ships as part of the issue, its top official, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, has also been vocal in faulting shipyards and manufacturers, as well.

"I need you to deliver platforms and capabilities on time and on budget without excuses," Del Toro said in February at a Navy conference in San Diego, California.

"Many of you are making record profits, as evidenced by your quarterly financial statements," Del Toro said, claiming that some companies "goose ... stock prices through stock buybacks, deferring promised capital investments, and other accounting maneuvers that to some seem to prioritize stock prices that drive executive compensation rather than making the needed fundamental investments."

The result is that, while the sea service told Congress last year that it needs 381 ships as well as up to 150 unmanned vessels to meet its national defense obligations, the most optimistic version of its plans has it reaching that goal in around 20 years.

In addition to the total fleet size, lawmakers voiced concerns about the state of the ships that the Navy is currently operating.

"I am more concerned about ship readiness," Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif., said at the hearing Wednesday. "I think that the metrics are not just bad, but I also think that the metrics are not truly honest."

One of the most visible areas of concern has become the Navy's amphibious ship fleet, which the Marine Corps uses to deploy the bulk of its forces around the globe.

The Navy is required by law to maintain 31 amphibious ships but, in an interview with Military.com in January, Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl, the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command and deputy commandant for combat development and integration -- the Marine who heads the service's modernization efforts, said that that number of ships requires better maintenance to be effective.

"When we say 31, that's based on a better readiness than we're seeing today," Heckl said. "So, it simply translates that if the machines are never going to reach the aspirational goals of 75-80% [readiness] then we're going to have to have more ships if we're really going to get back to having a crisis response force, always deployed, always forward -- that's going to mean an increase in numbers."

Military.com reported that a series of investigations into the USS Boxer -- an amphibious assault ship that was months late in deploying -- found that the Navy, along with shipyard personnel, not only struggled to correctly repair the aging vessel, but also that its engineering department was poorly led and suffering from issues that ranged from inexperience to outright allegations of assault that directly impacted the ship's ability to get out to sea.

"The Navy's Pacific Fleet was less ready and less capable because of USS Boxer's shortfalls," the admiral who commissioned one of the reports noted in his letter accepting the results.

Meanwhile, the Navy's top officer, Adm. Lisa Franchetti, told reporters Monday that the Boxer's sister ship, the USS Wasp may also be delayed .

"We're seeing some potential delays on Wasp. We're trying to look ahead to make sure that we can, I want to say, nip this in the bud," Franchetti said.

Ship watchers spotted the Wasp departing Naval Station Norfolk , Virginia, in early March only to return hours later, apparently with some tugs alongside.

Lt. Cmdr. Dave Carter, a spokesman for Naval Surface Force Atlantic, later told Military.com that "during the underway, the ship discovered an engineering irregularity" and "returned to port to effect repairs."

Most of the discussion revolving around the Navy's shortcomings focused on competition with China, with many lawmakers expressing concerns that the U.S. military is not meeting its primary pacing challenge.

"Frankly, the pivot to the Pacific has not been fully realized," Garcia said. "And I think that's by any metric. ... We are either falling behind or losing our lead relative to China."

Those concerns were not limited to the Pacific. Lawmakers cited the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group's most recent deployment to the Middle East as an example of the Navy's lacking ship readiness.

"The Department of the Navy's capability and capacity is further eroded by the maintenance delays that plague the fleet," Calvert said. "The committee continues to see the Navy spend every cent appropriated for ship maintenance, but complete fewer maintenance availabilities than forecasted."

"This creates both near-term risk to the fleet readiness and a bow wave of costly future maintenance requirements," he added.

Calvert cited the "repeated extensions" of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, or ARG, during its deployment to the Middle East this year, which became increasingly important in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, sparking turmoil and war in the region.

Military.com was first to report that the Bataan was delayed at least twice from returning from deployment . That deployment lasted roughly eight months, which lawmakers attributed to delays in maintenance.

In his submitted statement to Congress, Smith said that he and Franchetti have "locked shields" on the construction, maintenance, modernization and availability of amphibious ships.

"We must prioritize our operations with the Navy and its amphibious ships, and we must provide Marines with the organic mobility to rapidly maneuver from shore to shore, ship to shore and back again," Smith said.
