A pair of 81-year-old best friends have amassed thousands of fans and followers after documenting their trip around the world in 80 days.

Sandy Hazelip, a physician and lecturer, and her best friend Ellie Hamby, a documentary photographer, set out for their adventure on 11 January, according to their blog “ Around the World at 80, ” which the duo have used to document their travels.

According to the friends, their first destination was Antartica , which meant crossing the notoriously rough Drake Passage, a body of water located betweenthe southernmost tip of South America and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, aboard a ship.

In a blog post written from their first destination, the friends, who live in Texas, recalled how their once-in-a-lifetime trip was sparked by a “passing remark from Sandy to Ellie five years ago”.

“We were sitting around the table working late one night, and Sandy said, entirely out of the blue: ‘Ellie, why don’t we take a trip around the world in 80 days when we are 80,’” the pair remembered of the moment they decided to embark on the trip.

After Antarctica, Hazelip and Hamby travelled to Easter Island, a Chilean territory known for its archaeological sites, and then to Argentina.

According to the pair’s blog, their visit to Argentina in February replaced their previously planned destination Peru.

“Because of political violence in Peru and especially in the Machu Picchu area, we had to cancel this portion of our trip. We have the travel philosophy ‘just go with the flow and enjoy the journey - even if it is not the journey we planned.’ That is what we did, and what a fun journey we had in Argentina, our ‘substitute destination,’” the duo wrote, adding that they enjoyed dancing and horseback riding in Argentina.

From there, the friends visited Finland and the North Pole, as well as the Colosseum in Rome. After a trip to London, Hazelip and Hamby journeyed to Zanibar, Zambia, and Egypt, where they saw the pyramids and rode camels.

After more than 40 days of travelling, the 81-year-old friends visited India, and after that, Nepal, before they made their way to Japan in March.

By 21 March, the longtime friends were in Bali. However, it wasn’t their final destination, as the pair made it to Australia by April.

Overall, Hazelip and Hamby, who have also documented their travels on Instagram and TikTok , where they have accumulated more than 52,000 followers, visited 18 countries across all seven continents. During their journey, they were often seen wearing matching T-shirts.

As for the best part of the trip, which lasted more than three months, Hamby told CNN that it was the people she and her friend met along the way.

“We love all the sights that we saw, but the things that we remember the most are the people that we met,” she said. “We met some of the most wonderful, kindest, friendliest people in the world. We just have friends now all over the world that we love dearly.”

She also noted that the trip was not a vacation, but rather an adventure. “We always say when we started this, we did not plan a vacation,” she explained. “We planned an adventure. And every single day was an adventure.”

On social media, the duo’s trip has inspired hundreds, with many applauding the pair for embarking on the life-changing travels.

“This is so neat! Love watching and following along with you both on your travels!” one follower wrote, while another said: “Love the smiles [and] love the joy for life. Keep on going!”

“I love the sense of adventure!” someone else wrote.

Others said the trip had inspired them to embark on their own travels, with one person writing: “Your videos bring me such happiness and inspiration. I’m 59 and fear getting older but you prove anything is possible!”

While reflecting on the one thing that helped them communicate in every country, the women told CNN that it was their smiles.

“You know, people ask us often about the language, how we manage it,” said Hamby. “We say with Sandy and Ellie, there’s one language and that’s a smile. And we found that worked wonders because we were often aware that there was not English spoken. But a smile covers all languages.”

Although the pair have since returned home to Texas, they told the outlet they are already planning their next trip.

Marvel at the Northern Lights in a Remote Destination

Prepare to be awestruck as you witness the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights with your best friend in a remote destination. This celestial phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis, creates a mesmerizing display of dancing lights, painting the night sky with vibrant hues and leaving you breathless with wonder.

Choose a destination located within or near the Arctic Circle, such as Iceland, Norway, or Lapland in Finland. These remote locations offer prime viewing opportunities due to their clear skies and proximity to the Earth’s magnetic poles—the source of this natural spectacle.

Timing is crucial when it comes to witnessing the Northern Lights. Plan your trip during the winter months when darkness prevails and the night sky is at its darkest. Make sure to check the forecast for aurora activity and be prepared to stay up late, as the lights are most commonly spotted in the late hours of the evening.

Find a secluded spot away from artificial light pollution, such as a lake, open field, or a mountainside. Bundle up in warm clothing and bring blankets to keep comfortable while waiting for the show to begin. Patience is key, as these dancing lights can be unpredictable, but the anticipation makes the experience all the more rewarding.

As darkness falls, watch in awe as the sky comes alive with curtains, ribbons, and swirls of luminous colors. Shades of green and purple stretch across the heavens, sometimes accompanied by hints of pink, blue, or even red. The display dances in a mesmerizing symphony, captivating the senses and creating a truly magical experience.

Take the time to absorb the beauty and allow yourself to be fully immersed in the moment. It’s a shared experience with your best friend that brings a sense of tranquility, as you realize the magnitude of the natural world and your place within it.

Capture the Northern Lights on camera to preserve the memory of this extraordinary phenomenon. Experiment with different camera settings and long exposure techniques to capture the vibrant colors and the movement of the lights. However, do take moments to simply soak in the experience directly, allowing your senses to fully appreciate the wonder unfolding above.

Remember, witnessing the Northern Lights requires optimal weather conditions and a touch of luck. Even if you’re not fortunate enough to witness a vibrant display, remember that the journey itself is an adventure worth undertaking. The remote destinations that offer views of the Northern Lights are often pristine and untouched, providing incredible landscapes and other unique experiences to enjoy.

Marveling at the Northern Lights in a remote destination is a privilege and a profound experience that will forever hold a special place in your hearts. It’s a reminder of the beauty of our planet and the wonders that exist beyond our daily routines—a moment shared with your best friend that will create memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Meet the two 80-something best friends who saved up $20,000 to ditch work and travel around the world in 80 days

Photo of two women riding camels in Egypt

In Lapland, Finland, two women in their eighties and a pack of huskies whizzed by on a sleigh, roughing it out in -4˚ F weather. Their names: Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby.

What seemed like an easy tourist-friendly recommendation from their hotel turned out to be the real deal—a sled with no seats and a whip-fast race for at least a couple of miles. But the best friends were travelers, not tourists. And they weren’t known to shy away from an adventure, even if it was a surprise one.

“We just were holding on for dear life,” Hamby tells Fortune . The thrill was a highlight of her two-and-a-half month trip around the world with Hazelip earlier this year; the beauty of the unexpected made it all the more fun.

The pair, now 82, aim to tackle everything the world throws their way, documenting their whirlwind travel adventures on TikTok to their 63,000-plus followers. One video , featuring them riding camels, snowshoeing, and hot-air ballooning, racked up 1 million likes. Saying “yes, and an extra helping more please” to travel, these seniors are by no means limited by their age or societal expectations.

Still working full-time, Hazelip as a hospice medical director and Hamby as a medical mission director, the two were ready for a much needed break. Hazelip, who says she hadn’t taken real time off in 45 years and had turning 80 on the brain, proposed to Hamby: “Wouldn’t it be fun to go around the world in 80 days at age 80?” Having traveled well together before, Hamby immediately agreed.

Inspired by Phileas Fogg’s 80-day journey around the world, they planned to visit some of the same cities as the famed fictional character, all seven continents (including Antarctica), and as many of the Wonders of the World as possible (see: the Northern Lights).

With tickets booked and their 80th birthdays on the horizon, they were ready to go—until the pandemic slammed the brakes on everything. “COVID shut it down,” Hazelip says. “But COVID did not shut us down.” They finally embarked on their trip in January, on a $20,000 budget and with a new theme: “Around the world in 80 days at 81, and still on the run.”

A friendship with great mileage

Hazelip and Hamby first met 23 years ago on a medical mission, but weren’t as tied to the hip as they are now. Five years later, Hazelip rang up Hamby; she wanted to live near the practice she worked at in Abilene, Texas, which happened to be where Hamby was based. The two struck a deal: If Hamby gave Hazelip a place to stay two or three days a week, she’d take Hamby out for dinner. Hamby, a photographer whose husband recently passed away unexpectedly, took her up on the offer.

“That was 18 years ago, and that’s how our friendship started,” Hamby says. Still upholding their traditional weekly meals, Hazelip claims that Hamby could order correctly for her if she’s running late. “I can even buy clothes for her now,” she jokes.

Hazelip recalls telling her grandson after meeting Hamby that she’s “the only woman I have ever met who can work circles around me. I think we can be good friends.” Hamby felt similarly: “Most of the time we just outran our friends, we were always wanting to do more than anybody…all of a sudden we [found] each other. And wow, we struggle to keep up with each other.”

In the years since, they’ve since taken many a mission trip and five personal trips together, quickly discovering they were compatible on the road. The two are game for almost anything, which made Hazelip feel Hamby was the perfect travel companion for an international adventure.

“We’re both strong-willed ladies, but we respect each other’s stance on things,” she says, explaining that she acknowledges her companion’s need to rise early for photos. In Hamby’s case, that might look like trying more risky things that her friend is into, like riding camels or letting a snake slither around her torso.

‘Second-class travelers’

The duo covered every inch and cranny of the globe, bopping from Easter Island to the Great Barrier Reef, and spending time in each corner, including Antarctica and Australia. They forwent luxury stays and lounging by the beach, opting for adventure over vacation. As they put it, if your hands are well-manicured you might not want to travel with them. Most of their $20,000 budget went toward international flights, they say. “We did about the cheapest you could do,” Hamby adds.

The average cost of their hotel was $29 a person, although Hamby says they use the word “hotel” very loosely. One of her favorite places to stay was a $13.50 per night hotel in Cairo, which had a modest breakfast and no lobby or elevator. But it came with a “million-dollar view,” she says: If you went to the rooftop, you could look right out at the pyramids and watch the light show everyone else was paying for.

Calling themselves “second-class travelers,” Hamby says their affordable travel style is more fun and makes it easier to meet new people. It’s all about priorities, Hazelip adds: “Some people spend their money on boats, and being members of the country club and a new car every year. Those people who bought a new car, they spent more money than I spent on my 80-day trip.”

“This is a budget car, too,” Hamby quips.

They found that exploring cities was also generally more affordable and enjoyable when they get local recommendations from where they were staying. While they already planned some excursions, like riding hot-air balloons, they’d also ask the concierge if the hotel had a driver that could take them around to local sights.

That’s how the two ended up exploring Bali’s fields of orchids and rolling mountains. As they journeyed up the mountains, they saw a sign for a “happy swing” and asked their driver to pull over. With no tourists in sight, they boarded a swing on the edge of the cliff above a paddy field. Such spontaneity makes “travel fun, because you can do those unexpected things,” Hamby says.

While they initially posted their adventures on TikTok for their circle of friends, their journey touched a larger chord. It’s their friendship that attracts the younger audience looking to experience similar bonds and travels, Hamby says. “We really need each other. Sandy has enriched my life. I’m better because of that friendship,” she adds.

Moving into 2024, they want to keep the travel ball rolling and really explore one continent at a time. With a 30-day South America trip on the horizon—Machu Picchu is first up—they’ll be heading into the new year with a new slogan, “We are 82. And travel, we’re not through.”

Fun Places to Go With Friends on a Budget

1. thailand.

It’s a backpacker Mecca for a reason — Thailand is cheap, user-friendly, safe, and unbelievably fun for a best friends trip.

Get your party on at Bangkok’s Khao San Road, head up north to Chiang Mai to volunteer at an elephant rescue, then finish with some relaxation on the gorgeous southern beaches of Krabi and Ko Phi Phi.

2. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic (or “DR”) offers everything you’d want in a Caribbean vacation at a fraction of what you’d pay on other islands.

Stay at an all-inclusive resort, ride horses on the beach, snorkel through the crystal clear waters, or go ziplining through the treetops. Then you’ll be ready to hop on a party cruise boat and dance the night away.

Europe isn’t known for being the cheapest continent to travel to, but you can still find great deals in countries like Croatia.

It has just as much history and Mediterranean charm as Italy, Spain, or Greece, but if you travel during the autumn, winter, or spring, you won’t blow your travel budget!

Tour historic castles, go island hopping, sample local wine and beer, then marvel at the waterfalls in Plitvice Lake National Park.

4. Guatemala

Beaches, mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, and ancient ruins — what more could you ask for in your search for places to go with your best friends?

Guatemala packs the cultural and ecological punch of Costa Rica at a (much) cheaper price tag. Wander the colonial cobblestone streets of Antigua, trek through lush tropical jungles, then pull up a lounge chair beneath a postcard-perfect palm tree.

Another Southeast Asian hotspot, Vietnam belongs at the top of your list of fun places to go with friends.

Sample some of the healthiest and cheapest street food in Asia as you meander the bustling, chaotic streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

When you’re ready to slow down, take a cruise through spectacular Ha Long Bay or go for a trek through the traditional hill tribe region of Sapa.

In the following section, we’ll run through the best vacation for friends who loves adventure!

Best Vacation for Friends Who Love Adventure

From arid coastlines to ancient civilizations nestled high in the Andes, Peru is a must-see for any group of friends who loves a good adventure.

Wander through the archaeological sites outside Cusco before you tackle the 4-day Inca Trail, considered to be one of the top treks in the world. You’ll be rewarded with the unforgettable sight of Macchu Picchu at the end!

Eight of the world’s fourteen highest mountains are in Nepal. So if you’re wondering where to go with friends who love the great outdoors, Nepal is as extreme as it gets!

Get your fill of delicious curries in the capital city of Kathmandu before voyaging to Chitwan National Park in search of tigers and elephants.

Then lace up your hiking boots and get ready for the trek of a lifetime on either the Everest or the Annapurna Circuits for an up-close encounter with the Himalayas.

8. New Zealand

Whatever you and your friends fancy, you’ll find an extreme (and extremely awesome) version of it in New Zealand.

Hit the northern beaches for scuba diving, surfing, and kiteboarding, then soak your worries away in the natural geothermal hot springs at Rotorua.

When you’re ready to kick back into high gear, head south to Queenstown for an endless array of adrenaline thrills such as bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding, jetboating, and heli-skiing.

This Nordic island nation in the North Atlantic is home to some of the harshest and most dramatic landscapes on earth.

Ride Icelandic ponies across the tundra, get up close to active volcanic lava flows, marvel at the Glacier Lagoon and the black sand Diamond Beach, then relax into the hot glowing waters of the Blue Lagoon.

Bonus points if you’re brave enough to try hakarl and “Black Death” — also known as fermented shark and the equally pungent Brennevin liquor.

10. Tanzania

Is an African safari the best vacation for friends? Travel to Tanzania with your posse and your answer will be a resounding “Yes!”

Take a safari across the Serengeti in search of the “Big 5” or climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak. Then head east to the island of Zanzibar to explore its white sand beaches and diverse African, Indian, and Muslim cultures.

Do you know where to go with friends that love history?  Check out these ones…

Where to Go With Friends Who Love History

11. cambodia.

Lying in the centre of mainland Southeast Asia, Cambodia has a long, fascinating, and often tragic history.

Tap into your inner Tomb Raider and begin with a tour of the jaw-dropping Temples of Angkor, a once-mighty civilization that vanished into the jungle for almost 1,000 years.

Then head down to Phnom Penh to tour the Killing Fields and learn about the Khmer Rouge — one of the most atrocious (and surprisingly recent) genocides in human history.

Turkey sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and has been a major centre of human civilization since — well, the dawn of man.

Start in the exotic city of Istanbul, once the head of the mighty Ottoman Empire and home to over 3,000 mosques .

Venture east to Cappadocia and take a hot air balloon ride over the region’s bizarre rock-cut houses and churches. Along the way, you’ll find remains of every great empire that passed through Turkey, from the Greeks to the Romans to the Ottomans.

Greece is definitely one of the best places to go with friends who adore history.

Walk in the footsteps of ancient Greek philosophers at the Acropolis in Athens. Tour the famous archaeological ruins in Delphi, Mycenae, and Olympia. Then it’s all aboard for some island hopping to Santorini, Mykonos, and other jewels of the Aegean Sea.

Tick a major item off your bucket list with a best friends trip to Egypt, where you’ll come face to face with some of the greatest archaeological treasures in the world.

Ride camels through the desert around the mind-boggling Pyramids of Giza. Marvel at the 4,000-year-old Temple of Karnak, the largest religious structure ever built, along with Luxor’s Valley of the Kings where King Tut’s tomb was discovered.

If you still can’t get enough, add the temples of Abu Simbel, the ancient port city of Alexandria, or a trek to the top of Mount Sinai to your itinerary.

If you’re ready for the “history buff” trip of a lifetime, add China to your list of fun places to go with friends.

Hike along the Great Wall and get lost in Beijing’s Forbidden City, then travel south to Xian to see the 13,000 Terracotta Warriors

Eat some seriously spicy food in the Szechuan province before you journey further south to learn about Buddhist culture and customs in Tibet.

Or you can travel north along the ancient Silk Road and learn more about the powerful dynasties that controlled the first global trade routes.

If you and your besties are into partying, these are the best places to travel with friends!

Best Places to Travel With Friends & Party

16. cartagena, colombia.

One of South America’s most beloved party hubs, Cartagena is a prime choice for bachelor and bachelorette parties (or any group of travelling friends).

This Caribbean gem was founded in the 16th century, so there’s plenty of colonial architecture and gorgeous beaches to explore.

The main event, though, happens after the sun goes down when the city lights up with parties. Go club-hopping with your besties and dance the night away, or rent an Airbnb villa and throw yourselves the ultimate private pool party.

17. Bali, Indonesia

The island of Bali is known for its peaceful temples and rice terraces, but it’s also a haven for pleasure-seekers.

Book your stay in Kuta or Sanur and get ready to party hard with your besties and hundreds of new friends. Beach bonfires, bar crawls, cheap drinks, and delicious street food await!

If you have any energy left over in the morning, sign up for surf lessons or a day trip to the charming (and equally party-friendly) city of Ubud.

18. Cancun & Cozumel, Mexico

The ultimate destination for spring breakers, bachelor parties, or any other excuse you need, Cancun and its neighbouring island of Cozumel won’t disappoint.

Book your stay at an all-inclusive resort along the Caribbean Sea and get ready to do as much (or as little) as you desire. Enjoy those free-flow drinks while you relax under a beach umbrella or dine at the pool’s swim-up bar.

And if you need a break from the booze, there’s plenty to see and do, from ziplining and touring ancient Mayan ruins to scuba diving with whale sharks.

19. Barcelona, Spain

Wondering where to go with friends who like to do a little bit of everything? Barcelona is your destination!

This Mediterranean city truly has it all — ancient history dating back to Roman times, modern art galleries and Gaudi’s bizarre architecture, and some of the most delicious cuisine anywhere in the world.

Wander the narrow streets of the Gothic quarter for cheap drinks and free tapas before you settle in to watch the sunset over Barceloneta Beach.

20. Las Vegas, Nevada (USA)

Does Las Vegas really need any introduction?

This US city (oddly built in the middle of the desert) has been featured in films, books, and pop culture as the ultimate place to cut loose and let your fantasies unwind.

You can gamble, you can dance, you can see some of the best shows on earth, and you can drink ‘til you drop — all while enjoying the luxurious resort hotels along “The Strip.”

Here's what the 81-year-old best friends who traveled the world want to do next

When Sandy Hazelip proposed a whirlwind trip to her longtime friend Ellie Hamby for their milestone birthdays, the 81-year-old leaped at the idea.

“She said, ‘Ellie, why don’t we consider traveling around the world in 80 days when we’re 80?’” Hamby recalled in a recent interview with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth .

Though the COVID-19 pandemic required the two friends to put off their plans for after they turned 80, the two eventually made their grand voyage. On January 11, 2023, at the age of 81 years old, the pair started their journey, disembarking from their homes in Dallas, Texas. First stop: Antarctica.

From there, and in just 80 days, the two women packed in a tour de force of the world, which included taking in the northern lights of Lapland at the North Pole, the deserts of Africa and the great ancient structures of Rome .

The friends, who met in Zambia 23 years ago while on a medical mission, recently sat down with TODAY.com for a Zoom interview. Hamby and Hazelip said that a lean and well-thought-out budget pushed them to keep up with the spirit of a true excursion. The average cost of their hotels per night? $29 a person.

“We’re not wanting our comfort zone. We’re wanting an adventure,” Hamby explained during the Zoom of the friends' decision to spend less money on the comforts that might come with luxury hotels and more on mileage. “You do not have to stay in the big chain hotels. In other countries, the best hotels are local places. They may not be a hotel. They may be someone’s home. They may be just small little places, but those are the best buys and the most fun.”

Hamby and Hazelip on camels.

The two grandmothers also rode a sleigh pulled by huskies in Finland , flew high in a hot air balloon in Egypt and spent time searching for wallabies in Australia . For six days, they explored the streets of Bali , and for two, they braced themselves as they weathered a rocky ship ride across the notoriously rough Drake Passage .

“We sometimes had 20-foot waves and two days traveling,” Hamby beamed while recalling their trip through the passage that's considered one of the most treacherous journeys for a ship to take in the world. During the Zoom interview, the two friends playfully harmonized as they recalled “doing a-rockin’ and a-rollin’ and a-slippin’ and a-slidin’” as waves lashed at their boat.

Along their route, the two octogenarians’ circumnavigation became popular on platforms like Facebook , Youtube , Instagram and TikTok as they took on each of the world’s continents.

As they advanced around the globe, the two realized they were racking up a fan base.

“I am from Rwanda,” one user commented on a TikTok Q&A they shared. “We would love to have you here.”

“I had to come to look for you (two) after watching on 9 News in Colorado!!!!” another replied. “You 2 are AMAZING”

During the Zoom, Hazelip also recalled her family’s amusement over their social media popularity.

“My grandchildren have sent me the sweetest texts continually through our 80-day trip saying, ‘There’s my grandmother having fun!’” Hazelip said with a laugh.

As Hamby noted, mapping out the trip with her dear friend made all the difference when it came to taking on such high-seas adventures.

“We’ve been together 80 days 24/7, and we’ve just had a great adventure,” Hamby said. “It’s just really made us even closer than we were. We both — being widows — kind of found each other and found this friendship, and we both had phenomenal marriages, the best husbands in the world. And then we found the best friends in the world.”

As for expeditions to come, Hamby and Hazelip tell TODAY.com that they’ve got their eyes on the near horizon.

“We are planning another trip,” Hazelip revealed with a grin. “We’re going to reveal it in about a week or so. So it’s going to be something when we’re 82 in 2024. We haven’t come up with a good rhyme. We’ve got some ideas about where we’re going and what we’re going to do, so you just need to stay tuned for the next adventure because it’s going to happen!”

These Two Senior Best Friends Went Around the World in 80 Days—Here’s Their Travel Advice

At 81 years old, best friends ellie hamby and sandy hazelip traveled around the world in 80 days. a little more than a year after their big adventure, they’re not planning on stopping anytime soon..

With significant social media followings, Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip have taken the internet by storm with their friendship and zest for life.

Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby are the vaunted darlings of the travel influencer sphere—but they’re a little different from their peers. Hazelip and Hamby are in their eighties.

On January 11, 2023, the two best friends—who hail from the Abilene, Texas, area—embarked on a journey to visit all seven continents in 80 days after being inspired by the famed Jules Verne book, Around the World in 80 Days . They documented their experiences on their blog, Around the World at 80 , and on their social media accounts. Thanks to their infectious personalities and clear love for one another, they quickly rocketed to fame; today, they have 35,000 followers on Instagram and 70,000 followers on TikTok and have been featured everywhere from the New York Times to USA Today . Hamby and Hazelip are now known as the “TikTok Traveling Grannies”—and even have the shirts to prove it.

Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip are known as the “TikTok Traveling Grannies.”

Hamby and Hazelip are also a reflection of greater trends in travel: In recent years, more women are embarking on solo travel than ever before, and approximately 40 percent of all American travelers are seniors . And as AFAR’s Katherine LaGrave reported on in 2020, “Women make close to 85 percent of all travel decisions: where to go, when to fly, where to stay, what to see.” LaGrave also noted that women live longer than men and outnumber them in a crucial travel bracket—retirees—making them an important area of investment for the travel industry.

Despite the rise in offerings for women travelers, Hamby and Hazelip make it clear that they are doing things their way. They arrange all of their own travel plans and almost always eschew high-end hotels for hostels, local inns, and even rooms of private homes. They make it a point to always eat at local restaurants and never say no to a spontaneous experience.

And there have been plenty of those. Together, they braved the wild waves of the Drake Passage, navigated the Japanese subway and Shinkansen systems, and rode camels in Egypt (Hamby is admittedly not a camel fan, but hopped on one for her friend). They’re not stopping there: In addition to still working at the nonprofit organization where they originally met, Zambia Medical Mission , Hazelip and Hamby are currently on a 30-day trip across South America (“We Are Eighty-Two And We’re Not Through”) and are planning an even bigger excursion for their 85th birthdays, which they’ve already dubbed “Eighty-Five and Still Alive.” (They’re still working out all the details.)

During their travels, Hazelip and Hamby have learned big lessons about life, the world, friendship, and themselves. We asked them to share.

Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip standing outdoors wearing red flower hats

Inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days , Hamby and Hazelip embarked on an 80-day journey around the globe.

How did you two become friends?

Sandy Hazelip: Twenty-four years ago, we met at a medical missions workshop. Ellie and her husband were the directors of Zambia Medical Mission and I’m a physician with the organization. My husband had died six months previously and I was trying to fill up my heart with things.

Ellie Hamby: About five years after we first met, my husband died unexpectedly. It was at that same time that Sandy was moving her medical practice to Abilene. Sandy said, “I got a deal for you. If you’ll gimme a bed two nights a week, I’ll take you out to eat.” Well, that was 19 years ago and she’s actually staying here tonight.

That’s how we started all of our travels. We had two very, very bad tragedies happen in our lives—we lost our husbands. But a beautiful friendship came out of that. So, when you have a tragic loss, life doesn’t have to end, right? It’s difficult, but life does not end.

How did you know that you’d be good travel companions? Because sometimes we may have best friends, but we can’t necessarily be roommates with them.

Hamby: Three or four years after her husband’s death, I mentioned to Ellie one day, “You know, I have always wanted to ride the Trans-Siberian Railway . Would you be interested in doing that?” She said, “Well, yeah.” So, we bought tickets to fly to Moscow to catch the Trans-Siberian. And we discovered on that trip, “Wow, we are easy travelers together.” We just enjoy the adventure and we enjoy each other. And we also realized that while we are very different, we have very similar outlooks on life. We both love people. We have a basic trust in humanity.

Hamby and Sandy are usually recognized on their travels thanks to their large fanbase.

What’s it like being TikTik famous?

Hamby: We didn’t realize the impact that our friendship would have on millions of people. We’re known as the “TikTok Traveling Grannies” now. We have one video with 6.4 million views, and if you look at the comments, it’s all of these young people talking about, “I want a friend like that.” Sandy and I did not realize what a beautiful and valuable friendship we had until the rest of the world saw it for us.

I feel like you both really value going with the flow while you travel. Why is it important for other travelers to do the same?

Hazelip: In Bali, we had a driver that picked us up at our hotel every morning, and one day, he was driving us up into the mountains to see where this volcano had been. And as we were driving up there, we saw this sign that said “Happy Swing.” And Ellie said, “What’s a happy swing?” And he just said, “Well, let’s turn around and find out.”

Next thing you know, we’re in these red dresses and swinging 300 feet above the rice paddies. My God, we were just like 12-year-old girls. It was so fun. If we’d been on a tour, the tour bus wouldn’t have stopped there. But Sandy and I are always in charge of ourselves.

Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip in front of an Egyptian pyramid

For Hamby and Hazelip, traveling is all about getting to share new experiences with each other.

For people looking for their own travel companion or best friend, what piece of advice would you give them?

Hamby: No matter how much you like each other, you’ll have to give one another space—and be flexible.

Hazelip: You need to realize that in any relationship, both people are adults and you need to give each other common respect. Respect among strangers is important, but respect among friends is extremely important. We need to show each other that we care.

81-year-old best friends from Texas travel around the world in 80 days, inspiring followers

Ellie and sandy have been friends for more than 20 years and started traveling together after their husbands died a few years ago. they've now been to seven continents together..

best friends travel around the world

Two ladies in their 80s who just finished traveling around the world in 80 days have become social media famous in the process.

Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip began their adventure on Jan. 11, flying from Dallas to Ushuaia, Argentina, the launchpad to Antarctica. Hamby and Hazelip braved 20-foot waves crossing the Drake Passage on the way to the seventh continent and posed with penguins once they got there.

Since then, the widowed best friends from Texas have been to every other continent, ending the journey by exploring the Grand Canyon before returning home to Texas over the weekend.

During nearly three months of travel, Hamby and Hazelip have ridden camels in Egypt, thrown coins in Rome's Trevi Fountain, taken a selfie with a long-tailed macaque in Bali and ridden a dog sled in the Arctic Circle.

And they're not even tired, they told USA TODAY in a video interview from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

"Vacations are tiring. You get worn out on a vacation," Hazelip said. "This is not a vacation, this is an adventure, and an adventure just revs you up to keep going more."

The beginning

Hamby and Hazelip have been friends for about 20 years. When both their husbands died several years ago, they became even closer and started taking trips together.

The two were sitting around one night when the idea for a grander adventure came to Hazelip.

"Ellie, why don't we take a trip around the world in 80 days when we are 80?" Hazelip recalled. Hamby was shocked for a few seconds, thought about it for a few seconds and then blurted out: "Why not?!"

The two started planning but the pandemic briefly got in their way and forced them to shift their goal of traveling the world at 80 years old and make it 81, instead.

They even created a new catchphrase for themselves: "Now it's around the world in 80 days at 81 and still on the run!" they said in unison.

Another type of adventure: An Atlanta engineer rode every Disney ride in the world in 12 days. Here's how he did it.

When they started telling friends and family about their travel plans, Hamby estimates that roughly 20% of people really believed they would do it.

"Most people smiled at the beginning thinking that we wouldn't really do this," she said.

Social media fame

Not only have Hamby and Hazelip accomplished the trip they set out to plan, they gained a healthy number of fans along the way.

Videos of their adventures have more than 800,000 likes on TikTok and they have about 43,000 followers.

"You both are amazing!!" one user wrote. "Have fun and take care of each other!"

Another wrote that their "husbands are watching you full hearts and open arms and can't wait to listen to all the adventures you have had."

The pair said all the love from people around the world has been a pleasant surprise.

"It has been so wonderful to us to get comment after comment that we are bringing joy to other people's lives, that we are encouraging them to get up and do some of the same things, and that we are inspiring them," Hazelip said. "That just gives us great joy that we have been a joy to other people. And they feel like they are on our adventure with us."

Flexibility, optimism fuel adventure

Of all their adventures, the women say Bali stands out for how beautiful and budget-friendly it is. They thought Antarctica was a remarkable experience and they felt lucky to catch the Northern Lights when they were in Lapland, Finland.

During their whole trip, they said they never had one piece of lost luggage or even get into a single fight.

There have been a couple of minor hiccups, though.

Three days before they were supposed to start their trip to Peru, it had to be canceled because of the political unrest. So they went to Argentina, instead.

"Sandy did the tango and I went horseback riding and we had a blast," Hamby said.

Flexibility and optimism have been the key to all the smooth sailing, they said.

For instance, they accidentally got on the wrong train in Japan.

"We didn't just freak out," Hamby said. "We just said, 'Ok, well, let's figure out plan B, how are we going to make this work?' And that's basically our attitude. 'OK, this isn't working, and we just go to plan B. We sometimes go to C, D and E and several other plans."

They also take liquid antacids every morning. "And we don't get sick," Hamby said.

'Get up out of that easy chair'

Among the most exciting experiences was the time the women went on a dogsled dog sled ride and got more than they bargained for.

"We just take off and we went several miles," Hamby said. "And we were turning corners, it was minus 4 so it was so cold. And we just didn't know it was gonna be that adventuresome ... We were holding on for dear life."

Now that the pair are back home safe, they're hoping others are inspired to go on their own adventures.

"My advice is, get up out of that easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make some plans and live," Hazelip said. "Your age is only a number."

So what's next for the globetrotting octogenarians?

Humby said: "85 and still alive!"

How to plan a trip around the world

Making the fantasy of a global odyssey an achievable reality is not as impossible as it might seem.

Combining a series of once-in-a-lifetime experiences into a single around-the-world trip can feel like the ultimate expression of luxury travel. It can be a daunting prospect though, with many contending factors to consider. Here's how to start planning the ultimate round-the-world trip.

1. Take to the sky

Air travel is, predictably, the simplest way to traverse the globe. Start by purchasing an around-the-world plane ticket through an airline alliance — coalitions of different airlines which let you pay for all of your flights in a single transaction. The alliance offers regional passes which might work better should you want to devote the bulk of your time to one or two continents.

There are three main players: Star Alliance, OneWorld and Skyteam; the latter, however, has suspended sales of RTW tickets. Star Alliance is a confederation of 26 airlines covering 1,200 airports in 98% of the world’s nations, while OneWorld’s 13 airlines serve 1,000 destinations across almost as many countries.

The small print varies, but fliers must always keep to one global direction, east or west (the latter better suits your circadian rhythm), with no backtracking; must only cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans once each; must start and finish in the same country; and must travel for a period between 10 days and one year.

Convenience is a benefit here, allowing you to minimise paperwork. It’s worth noting that some countries, such as China, also require proof of an outbound air ticket before issuing visas.

How to do it:   Star Alliance offers a 133-day itinerary from London via Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York from £2,580 per person.

2. Ride the rails

A century ago, taking extended rail journeys was one of the only means of long-distance travel. Today, trains are a great option for travellers looking to minimise their carbon footprint and take a slower, more measured route.

Recapturing the romance of the past, around-the-world specialists Travel Nation can tailor-make odysseys involving   separate train journeys. Vietnam’s Reunification Express, an Outback crossing aboard the Australian Ghan and a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada can all feature.

How to do it:   Travel Nation ’s 74-night, rail-focused global tour costs from £17,760 per person, including flights, trains, accommodation, most meals and some excursions.

3. Go Private

For those who truly want to travel in style, it’s possible to circumnavigate the globe by private jet through National Geographic Expeditions. These trips are based around epic itineraries whose remarkable destinations are brought to life by a experts and groundbreaking researchers in various fields, who most travellers never get to meet.

On the 24-day Around the World by Private Jet expedition, you can visit 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Among the trip’s standouts are Easter Island’s Moai statues, Angkor’s jungle-flanked temple complexes, rock-carved Petra and a Serengeti safari. Departing from Washington, DC, up to 75 passengers will travel VIP-style in a customised Boeing 757, bedding down throughout the adventure in five-star hotels or lodges.

How to do it: National Geographic Expeditions ’ 23-night Around the World by Private Jet trip starts from £77,100 per person, all-inclusive, including medical evacuation insurance. Departures on 10 March, 29 October and 28 December 2024.

4. Head overland

Travellers who don’t mind hitting the open road can try Oasis Overland, a tour company specialising in overland travel. Its longest offering is a 293-day trip from the UK to Cairo via an anticlockwise loop along much of the African coast, plus Victoria Falls and Zanzibar. The slew of highlights include the Sahara desert, the Giza Pyramids and East Africa’s wildlife-rich plains.

The 16 (or fewer) group members will ride in one of Oasis Overland’s bright yellow trucks, built for traversing bumpy roads while offering as much comfort as possible. Nights are almost exclusively spent camping, and everyone is expected to contribute by pitching tents or cooking dinners.

You could also combine trips by flying from Cairo to Istanbul and then joining another overland tour all the way to Singapore, for example.

How to do it: Oasis Overland ’s 292-night UK to Cairo expedition starts from £9,495 per person, including all transport (except flights from the UK to Gibraltar or Malaga) and a selection of excursions.

5. Do it yourself

Arranging everything yourself is an option — most easily accomplished by purchasing multi-destination flights through a comparison website such as kiwi.com or Skyscanner.

A big upside to this is that you can work out something closely aligned to your specific needs; it’ll require a fair bit of time, though, and you’ll lose out in terms of flexibility — changing dates can be tricky — and cancellation cover.

It’s usually more convenient to aim for large airport hubs — the likes of Bangkok, Dallas, Dubai, Heathrow, Paris and Singapore — as the many competing services provide more options. A typical around-the-world ticket will involve something along the lines of London — Istanbul — Bangkok — Singapore — Sydney — Los Angeles — New York — London. From these hubs, you’ll be well placed to add in more obscure destinations in between.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that you don’t have to fly between each stage. For instance, it’s possible to travel from London to Istanbul by train, lowering your carbon footprint in the process. Or, rather than flying from Bangkok to Singapore, you could get a boat from the Thai capital to Koh Samui and continue from there instead. A reliable tool for establishing train, bus, boat or taxi costs is the website Rome2Rio, and it’s worth investigating the likes of Amtrak rail passes in the US, Eurail Passes for European trains or Greyhound coach tickets covering Australia’s east coast.

Accommodation is something to decide on in advance. Be sure to have all hotel bookings locked in place well ahead of time. Hostels are a good bet, especially if you’re travelling solo or planning an ad-hoc approach during each stage of the trip, but can be lacking in privacy and comforts. House or apartment rentals can be much more comfortable and convenient, particularly for longer stays.

How to do it: A sample 147-day itinerary from London via Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York from kiwi.com starts at £2,189 per person, including checked luggage.

6. Enlist a pro

One of the best ways to arrange an air-based around-the-world itinerary is by booking with a specialist agent or operator such as Trailfinders, Travel Nation or AirTreks. This can cut out a lot of organisational stress, while also enabling you to take advantage of these companies’ many years of experience. These firms often have access to special deals and aren’t constrained to particular airlines or alliances, allowing them to further improve the offerings to their clients.

The AirTreks website even has a trip planner tool listing a series of suggested activities, interests and attractions such as hiking, beaches, meditation or family travel, providing an extra level of choice at the planning stage.

If you’re interested in earning air miles, specify this to the agent so that they can concentrate on finding flights that qualify. Agents will also be able to suggest tempting additional stops — Taiwan, maybe, or a pause in Oman — which can be a great way of adding an extra bit of excitement to burgeoning itineraries.

Finally, a specialist company can also take care of — or advise on — vaccinations (such as malaria), and certification and visas you’ll need, saving you plenty of legwork.

How to do it: AirTrek s’ nine-stop ticket from London via Paris, Florence, Venice, Athens, Singapore, Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles costs from £1,325 to £1,770.

7. Learn to sail

Land ahoy! You might just get to utter those words by signing up for a unique sailing adventure with London-based operator Another World Adventures, which can arrange for you to join a classic, square-rigged tall ship for 90 days as it makes its way around the world on a 455-day voyage. Once on board, you’ll learn how to trim the sails, haul mizzen spinnakers and lean on trade winds to cross the tropics. No experience is required, and participants will become part of a tight-knit crew and make friends for life.

It doesn’t matter at which point on its itinerary the ship happens to be, as it’s entirely possible to join subsequent legs. Setting sail from Bali on 6 November 2023, leg three sees the ship call at the Indian Ocean islands of Rodrigues and Reunion before arriving in Cape Town on 6 February. Beginning one day later, the fourth and final stage is via Namibia, the British overseas territory of St Helena, several Caribbean islands and, on 13 July, Nova Scotia in Canada.

If you’d prefer to wait and tackle the whole trip — the other two legs are Nova Scotia to Tahiti, and Tahiti to Bali — then Another World Adventures (which also offers other, similar experiences) expects it to start in 2025.

How to do it:   Another World Adventures offers 90 nights, full board, from £13,600 per person, including transport, port fees and instruction.

8. Cruise along

Ever more around-the-world voyages are being offered by cruise lines. To join one, you’ll need one important thing: lots of spare time. The circular itineraries are mostly more than 100 days in length, with Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise maxing out at 274 nights via seven continents and around 150 stops. These kinds of journeys really fit the ‘trip of a lifetime’ tag, running up to £100,000 per person.

Notably, 2023 marks a century since the world’s first continuous passenger cruise ship completed its pioneering journey. Chartered by the American Express Company, Cunard’s SS Laconia arrived back in New York City after completing a monumental six-month sailing via Japan, Singapore, India and Egypt.

They also sell out quicker than almost any other cruise, partly due to having a limited number of departures. Holland America Line, for example, opened bookings this summer on its new 2025 Grand World Voyage. Departing from Fort Lauderdale in Florida, this is a six-continent, 124-day round-trip which transits the Panama Canal before visiting Callao (for excursions to Machu Picchu), Easter Island, Tahiti, the Great Barrier Reef, the Seychelles, Cape Town, Kenya, Jordan and Barcelona among 46 stops.

How to do it:   Holland America Line’s 123-night Grand World Voyage starts from £19,900 per person, full board, including complimentary airport transfers, a $500 (£400) air credit and up to £6,700 per person in onboard spending credits if booked by 3 June 2024.

9. Hop aboard a cargo ship

A rather more adventurous way of sailing the seas is aboard a cargo ship or freighter cruise. Carrying large containers of clothes, electrical equipment, foods and most other things between the world’s major ports, some of these allot space for four to 12 passengers.

Single, twin or double cabins are the norm, usually with sea-facing windows as well as a sitting area, a desk, a shower and a toilet. A few boats come with a pool, but most are very simple — they’re built for work, not pleasure, after all — and you certainly won’t find a spa or casino (though playing cards with the crew members isn't unheard of). All meals are provided in the on-board canteen.

The major appeal is the sense of serenity — watching the ocean drift by and having time to gather your thoughts or write that novel you’ve always planned.

This can also be an amazing way to tick off some hard-to-reach places. Take freighters travelling to Singapore from New Zealand; be it for fuel and supplies or to make a drop-off, these stop at numerous Pacific islands en route, occasionally for a couple of days. That said, some port calls are too quick for guests to go ashore.

Note that good health and unaided mobility — due to steep gangways and lots of stairs — are mandatory, and it’s not suited for children or elderly travellers.

How to do it:   Cargo Ship Voyages offers a cargo ship crossing from Rotterdam to Cuba (estimated at 16 nights) from £1,880 per person, which includes all meals.

Texas best friends, age 81, go viral for traveling to 7 continents in 80 days: 'Make some plans and live'

Ellie hamby and sandy hazelip have been gaining attention on tiktok after their travel adventure.

Best friends, age 81, travel the world in 80 days

Ellie Hamby and her longtime friend Sandy Hazelip, both from Texas, traveled across seven continents.

Two 81-one-year-old besties from Texas just returned from the adventure of a lifetime — a trip around the world. They hit all seven continents in just 80 days.

"We never missed a day, the whole 80 days," Ellie Hamby, 81, of Abilene, Texas, told Fox News Digital. "We never woke up and said, 'Oh, we're just too tired. Let's stay in bed.’ Never. We got up every morning and were ready to take on the next adventure."

Ellie Hamby of Abilene, Texas, director of Zambia Medical Mission, and Sandy Hazelip of Eastland, Texas, a physician specializing in geriatric medicine, met while on a medical mission trip 23 years ago. The pair have been friends ever since.

"About four or five years in anticipation of our turning 80, I just mentioned to Ellie, ‘Wouldn't it be fun when we turned 80 to go around the world in 80 days?' Ellie's eyes got big and she said, ‘Well, yes.’"

The pair soaked up inspiration from the 1872 adventure novel "Around the World in Eighty Days" by Jules Verne. Their original plan was to travel "around the world in 80 days at the age of 80" — but COVID put those plans on pause.

They waited out the pandemic — and then adopted the motto "81 and still on the run" for the trip that finally happened this year, from January through March.

The two women hit 18 countries.

"Sandy and I planned everything ourselves," Hamby said. "We went by ourselves. We planned every hotel, every flight."

And they did it on a budget.

"Our average hotel [cost] was $29 a night for each of us," Hazelip said.

"She's more daring than I am, but hey, I'm a doctor." — Sandy Hazelip

That price bought them some experiences of staying in what they said were "some of the greatest places in the world."

Hamby said, "They were not American or fancy European hotels at all. They were local places that were just adorable, and the people are wonderful."

The two were scheduled to fly to 19 countries, but ended up traveling to 18 due to political unrest in Peru that shut down some of their destinations, including the historical Machu Picchu (one of the world's seven wonders).

But that didn’t faze Hamby and Hazelip — they just went on to Argentina.

"We had fun. I rode horses and Sandy did the Tango," Hamby said.

The trip started off in Antarctica, where they had to cross the daunting Drake Passage on an expedition ship.

On the two-day trip, they encountered 20-foot waves.

"Once you put your feet down on the soil of the Antarctic, it's all worth it," Hamby said. "You see God's beauty, the penguins, the icebergs. It's just an amazing place to be and to see."

The next stop was the opposite pole — the Arctic Circle and Lapland, Finland.

"It was so exciting to get to actually witness the Northern Lights," Hazelip said. "That was just absolutely an exciting moment."

While the trip was filled with planned experiences, such as a hot air balloon ride over Luxor, Egypt, there were a few unexpected moments — such as a relaxing dog sled ride that turned lively, Hamby said.

"These dogs were lined up and then all of a sudden somebody gave a command and they took off," she added.

"We were totally not expecting this and we went about several miles with these dogs through the woods as fast as we could. We'd make corners and we'd have to hold on for dear life. And, after it was all over, I was like, ‘Wow, that was fun,'" Hamby said.

"It's just the experience of meeting the people and just knowing that there's goodness all over the world." — Ellie Hamby

Another unexpected delight, the women agreed, was swinging over the rice paddies in Bali.

"We just were going up to the mountains with our driver and went past a sign that said, ‘Happy Swing.’ I said, ‘Well, why don't we turn around and just see what that is. And we did. We were the only ones there. They pushed me out a long way. That was an exhilarating, fun time," Hamby said.

But Hamby said Hazelip never tries to hold her back from activities or interests.

"She won't tell me I can't do it," Hamby said. "She may say, ‘Oh, are you sure you want to do that?’ We work together that way. But she still can out-dance me any time on the Tango."

In addition to the single swing out over the rice fields, Hamby also allowed a Python to wrap itself around her. She went snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, too, Hazelip pointed out.

Along the way, the two visited Easter Island, the spice islands of Zanzibar, the Great Pyramids of Egypt and the Taj Mahal.

On each continent, Hamby and Hazelip found different places meaningful to each of them.

"I thought the island of Bali was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, with its beautiful bird park, butterfly park, orchid park," Hazelip said.

Hamby said one of her favorite destinations was a place she hadn't thought would make such an impact on her.

"Tasmania was just a most gorgeous [place]," Hamby said. "It's a very small island. And it was just a surprise that it was so beautiful. And nobody that I've ever heard of goes to Tasmania."

"Age is just a number. So don’t say, ‘I'm this age, I can't do it.’" — Ellie Hamby

Hazelip said she felt the same way.

"Tasmania, of course, is an island surrounded by beautiful beaches and ocean and then has gorgeous mountains and waterfalls," she noted. "It's just unreal."

"We had lots of cultural experiences because the way we travel, we're not traveling with other tourists," Hamby said. "We got invited to homes. This was really, really encouraging. We made great friends."

She added, "I just got an email this morning from [someone] in Bali. It's just the experience of meeting the people and just knowing that there's goodness all over the world."

She had to "check in often," Hamby said of her friend.

"If we fall off an iceberg in Antarctica or off a mountain, our husbands are waiting for us in heaven. So, it's all good." — Ellie Hamby

Both agreed that the feeling of being out in the world, doing their own thing, was very freeing.

"This was such a great, great joy," Hazelip said. "For the last 40 to 45 years, I have not had or taken that opportunity. I've stayed very focused on — in addition to my family — my patients and their families and their needs. This was a total ‘woo hoo’ for me."

"We've always told everyone that we did not go on a vacation," Hamby said. "We went on an adventure."

Make sure to bring your appetite — Savannah's delicious Southern cuisine will not disappoint." — Kristen Pike, KK Travels Worldwide

Dublin, Ireland

"Dublin is a fantastic place to spend a few days, with a short flight from Boston or New York and the recent exchange rate is very attractive relative to years past." — Ellen LeCompte, Travel Xperts

Urla, Turkey

"The resort town is not too far from Izmir and Cesme. It is one of the most delightful towns and has great vineyards and olive trees — just like Napa and Sonoma. It's a great place relax, unwind and recharge your batteries." — Engin Kadaster, Turkey At It's Best

Songyang, China

"This is a new tea plantation area reachable by high speed rail or by car ride in around three hours from Shanghai. It's little visited. The town is known for its tea plantation, but what I like most is the newest string of architecturally stunning craft shops — a brown sugar craft shop and tofu craft shop. There are workshops where locals actually do their job. They are also artistically stunning spaces set in the middle of farm fields. A very different old town experience from the rest of China. Highly recommend before it becomes too famous." — Mei Zhang, Wild China

Thessaloniki, Greece

"There's no better option for an urban escape that's also easy on the pocketbook than Thessaloniki. It remains largely undiscovered by the crowds, and it is thanks to this relative obscurity that it is still very budget-friendly despite being the second largest city in Greece. Lively and exciting, yet disarmingly cool and laid-back, it offers plenty of excellent restaurants and interesting bars to explore, while there's also plenty of history if you're looking to scratch that culture itch." — Christos Stergiou, True Trips

Madrid, Spain

"Madrid continues to be a great city destination, perfect for a three-day weekend trip. It's easy to get there and straightforward to get around, either on foot or by metro. Hire a guide to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles or meet artists and artisans at work in their studios. You'll also explore all the places the guidebooks don't mention and by the end of the day feel like a real 'madrileño.'" — Nigel Hack, Madrid and Beyond

Deer Valley, Utah

"Deer Valley has great hiking, skiing, dining, and spas. Some of the best resorts are nearly unattainable during winter months, but more available, and cheaper, in the summer — another great time to visit the area. It's a very easy drive from Salt Lake City, which in turn, is nonstop from many cities." — Louisa Gehring, Gehring Travel

Santa Fe, New Mexico

"Santa Fe is a multi-cultural wonder in northern New Mexico. It's known as the Southwestern art scene's epicenter, boasting stellar dining, often consisting of the areas infamous Hatch hot green chili. The city has a surprising opera and arts scene, skiing 15 minutes away during winter, and an annual September pagan festival called Zozobra which is like a Burning Man festival." — John Clifford, International Travel Management

6 Apps to Meet Travelers and Make Friends Around the World

Is there anything more freeing or empowering than traveling alone to a new place?

While solo trips are wonderful ways to spend some quality time alone, they’re also ideal for making new friends .

Thanks to modern technology, we can use apps to meet other travelers while traveling solo.

To give you a leg up, I’ve compiled six of the best apps for meeting other travelers when you’re on the road, including where to get them, best features and the pros and cons of each app.

Couchsurfing

Facebook groups, other ways to meet travelers abroad, learn the local language, keep an open mind, find tours about what you love, stay in hostels (and join the parties).

Summary:  Easy to use app to find food experiences and people to share them with.

apps-to-meet-travelers

Eatwith provides an incredible opportunity to meet people who share the most delicious passion out there: food!  In other words, if you’re a traveling foodie, this is the app for you.

Not only can you browse food and eating experiences in the app, you can search for others (both locals and fellow travelers) to eat with.

You simply add the city and food experience that you want to have, and if you’re lucky, you’ll have a great partner for poking around a Guatemala market, trying tapas in Barcelona or eating a guinea pig in Peru (yes, this is common!).

I tried this app once and was invited to dinner at a Greek grandmother’s little beach house. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

The downside of this app is that sometimes there aren’t that many experiences listed, so it works best in peak travel seasons.

Backpackr logo

With a pleasing design and an easy-to-use interface, Backpackr is the premiere website to meet travel buddies and connect with other like-minded travelers around the world.

You can use the site before your trip (say, to find someone to travel with), but it also works well on the road, with thousands of users, active message boards and a common room, where you can ask for advice and recommendations.

The site excels at using the format of social media, but for people who are traveling, or will travel soon. I’ve used the app and I ended up with some fun travel buddies that accompanied me from Crete all the way to Turkey.

The site even sends push notifications when someone is en route to your destination so you can check them out or message them.

The downside of Backpackr is that there is no Android app, so you need a laptop to access it.

Summary:  Long-lived and well-liked app to help you find a place to sleep with a local.

apps-to-meet-travelers

Use Couchsurfing to find locals whose couch you can sleep on. For free!

The Couchsurfing community connects you with people who have free space in their house and are willing to offer it to like-minded people.

But even if you’d rather stay in a hotel or hostel, Couchsurfing can still be a great tool for meeting new people.

First, you can create a profile and select that you’d like to grab a beer or coffee with people, not necessarily stay in their homes.

Second, there’s a feature that lets you post what you’re planning to do that day. People can join your group to participate in your plans. Locals and travelers alike can get together to have some fun!

Couchsurfing is by far one of the most popular communities of like-minded people who are passionate about traveling, meeting new people and making friends.

The only downside of Couchsurfing is that you don’t know anything about the “couch” (which can also be a bed) until you arrive at the house, so picky travelers may want to avoid it.

Summary:  Well used app that helps you meet people for almost any reason you can think of.

apps-to-meet-travelers

If meeting people with similar interests is your idea of a good time, then Meetup is the app for you.

This app connects people who share passions and hobbies.

From training for a marathon, to practicing a l anguage , to having deep conversations about philosophy, Meetup is one of the most incredible tools for people looking for friends in a new area. Especially in big cities like Berlin, London and Tokyo! You could join a different Meetup every single day of the week.

Women who code? Yep.

Solo travelers in Amsterdam? For sure.

Fellow travel photographers ? Absolutely. It’s all there!

Make sure you read the description of each Meetup group before you join. Some of them require you to bring an item, pay a fee or just read something beforehand.

The only downside here is that it’s not geared specifically for travelers, so you’re most likely to meet locals here.

Summary:  Easy to use app for women travelers to connect with other women on the road.

This app is reserved for female travelers, so it can provide a safe way to meet other female travelers with on the road. It’s worth knowing that the app verifies the users to increase safety.

Once you download the app, you create a profile, list a destination and then start making connections with other women.

You can use the app before you leave or while you’re in the middle of an epic backpacking trip.

I’ve heard from friends that sometimes, the number of people using the app can be low in the off season, so it’s probably better to use it in the high season.

Summary:  Trusted groups for locating fellow travelers and travel advice.

apps-to-meet-travelers

Initially, the Facebook app may seem more suited to staying in touch with loved ones back home than to making friends in new cities.

But Facebook Groups are incredible tools for meeting people around the world.

Before hopping on a plane, find a Facebook group targeted toward travelers with your needs and interests.

For example, if you’re a solo female traveler, join Girls LOVE Travel® and meet other women who will be traveling to the same location.

Want to get even more specific? Try Facebook groups such as South America Travel with Kids or Chat food travel in TW (Taiwan) .

Facebook groups are incredible assets for meeting people in different cities. These groups are filled with posts and invitations to local events, where you can meet tons of fellow explorers.

Here are some other popular Facebook groups to check out before (or while) you travel:

  • Ultimate Travel Group : a large community for travelers and travel bloggers
  • Explorer by Nomads : an expansive travel group that emphasizes digital work
  • Travel Community : almost 200,000 members coming together for travel advice and connections
  • Photographers & Travel Nomads : travel group focusing on making connections between travel photographs and digital nomads
  • Backpacking Europe : if you’re backpacking around Europe, join this group to meet others who are, too
  • Southeast Asia Backpacker Community : if you’re backpacking around Southeast Asia, this is a very effective group for meeting other travelers
  • Backpacking South America : this group is the same as the previous two, but for South America
  • Solo Female Travelers : just like the name implies, solo women travelers can connect with others easily in this group

If you don’t feel like downloading a bunch of apps, don’t worry! There are lots of other ways you can meet fellow travelers.

It may seem like common sense, but if you want to meet locals, it helps to know their language. Sure, wherever you go you may find people who know some English. But if you really want to interact with locals as you travel, learn the local language.

You might find yourself picking up the language through sheer immersion—that is, just by being surrounded by the language.

Give yourself a boost with a language learning program like FluentU . This immersion program will prepare you for real spoken languages since it teaches through authentic videos like movie clips, music videos, vlogs and more.

Watch videos to pick up on vocabulary that you might encounter on your travels like food and local customs. You can save vocabulary directly from videos and study them through personalized quizzes that also let you practice pronunciation with speaking questions.

best friends travel around the world

FluentU is available in 10 languages, and has an iOS and Android app, so it can come on your travels with you.

Keep an open mind when you meet people abroad. Don’t judge them based on your preconceptions of their culture, race or gender. The entire point of traveling is to open your mind, right?

The best thing about meeting people abroad is that you probably wouldn’t have met anyone like them back home. Differences in age, style, music preferences and many other tiny details are easily forgotten when you both share a passion for traveling and experience adventures together.

There are interesting people in hostels, cafes, stores and shopping malls. Make sure you keep an open mind so you can spot them.

Going on guided tours is a great way to both learn about the culture and meet fellow travelers. And since those travelers on the same tour you are, they probably have similar interests! That makes tours a convenient way to meet people.

Take a food market tour in Taiwan . Or a walking tour of historic Sydney. Or a bike tour around New York City.

Mutual interests are the glue of new friendships.

There’s something magical about the common area of a nice hostel.

Everyone there is open to making new friends. You all always have something in common, even if it’s just that you’re travelers to this new city. Because of this connection, small parties and hang-outs often form in the common area.

And more often than not, hanging out in the common room leads to an adventure. It’s not unusual for groups to end up going out together, experiencing the city as new friends.

Even if staying in a shared room isn’t your taste, you can still look for private rooms in a hostel. In the end, you can have the best of both worlds: the privacy of a solo room and the social aspect of the common area.

Meeting people around the world with similar interests has never been easier, thanks for these apps and recommendations.

You won’t just finish your trip with new friends. You’ll also have new experiences and a ton of stories to share.

Here's what you need to know to plan a trip around the world

Dec 29, 2021 • 7 min read

In 1924, a team of aviators from the USA successfully completed the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe by airplane, a feat that took 175 days, 76 stops, a cache of 15 Liberty engines, 14 spare pontoons, four aircraft and two sets of new wings. This achievement ushered in an era of international air travel, and nearly a century later, travelers are still creating their own round-the-world itineraries.

You might not have the same worries as those early aviators, but planning a round-the-world trip has never been a more complex process. As COVID-19 continues to alter world travel , heading out on a multi-country trip might be more complicated than it has been in decades. While it might not be the right time to hit the road, luckily it's never too early to start figuring out the logistics of a trip around the globe. After all, who doesn't have a lot of pent-up wanderlust at the moment?

When it comes to booking your trip, there are several options for booking your airfare, as well as flexibility on timing, destinations and budget. But don't let that overwhelm you – start here with our handy guide on how to plan that round-the-world trip you’ve always dreamed of.

Where and how to get a round-the-world plane ticket

The most economical way to circumnavigate the globe is to buy a round-the-world (RTW) plane ticket through a single airline alliance. These are confederations of several different airlines that make it simple to maximize the number of places you can travel and pay for it all in one place or with points. There are three primary airline alliances to choose from: Star Alliance, OneWorld and Skyteam.  Star Alliance is a coalition of 26 airlines that fly to 1300 airports in 98% of the world’s countries.  OneWorld includes 14 airlines traveling to 1100 destinations in 180 territories.  Skyteam is made up of 19 airlines that serve 1000 destinations in 170 countries.

Read more:   How to save money when you're traveling

Once you pick an airline alliance, whether because of a loyalty program you’re already a member of or because you like its terms, conditions and destination list, you can purchase a single RTW airline ticket made up of several legs fulfilled by that alliance’s partners. The RTW ticket rules vary between each of the airline alliances, with particulars like Star Alliance’s rule that a RTW ticket can include two to 15 stops. But there are some general principles that apply to most RTW tickets, no matter which airline group you go with.

You typically must follow one global direction (east or west – no backtracking); you must start and finish in the same country; and you must book all your flights before departure, though you can change them later (though this could incur extra charges). Typically you have one year to get from your starting point to the finish line.

How long do I need for a round-the-world trip?

You could whip around the world in a weekend if you flew non-stop, especially with the advent of new ultra-long-haul flights that can clock in at 20 hours of flight time. However, the minimum duration of most RTW tickets is 10 days – still a breathless romp. To get the most out of your round-the-world ticket, consider stock-piling vacation days, tagging on public holidays or even arranging a sabbatical from work to take off at least two months (but ideally six months to one year). Because most airline alliances give you up to a year to use your ticket, you can maximize your purchase if you plan well.

When should I travel on a round-the-world trip?

The weather will never be ideal in all your stops, so focus on what you want to do most and research the conditions there. In general, city sightseeing can be done year-round (escape extreme heat, cold or rain in museums and cafes), but outdoor adventures are more reliant on – and enjoyable in – the right weather.

Research ahead of time if any must-see destinations or must-do activities will mean facing crowds. For example, if you’re hoping to be in Austria for the famous Salzburg Festival, you’ll want to plan ahead and book your tickets months in advance. If you’re hoping to fit a shorter thru-hike into your round-the-world trip, you’ll want to make sure you’re going in the correct season and starting in the right spot. You won’t get far or have as enjoyable an experience if you’re, say, attempting the Tour du Mont Blanc during the dates of the annual winter marathon or headed northbound on the Pacific Crest Trail in July, missing most of the warmer months.

Accept youʼll be in some regions at the "wrong" time – though this might offer unexpected benefits. For example, Victoria Falls has a dry season each year , which means a slightly less thunderous cascade, but it does open up rafting opportunities and a chance to swim right up to the lip of the falls in The Devil’s Pool. Going to Venice in the winter might mean grayer skies but fewer crowds. Heading to Kenya and Tanzania in April is likely to mean fewer humans, but not fewer chances to spot wildlife, all while saving money on safari.  Also keep in mind that mom-and-pop locations have their downtime and holiday seasons as well; don't be too surprised if your local bakery in Paris is closed for a holiday week or two in August.

Where should I go on my round-the-world trip?

The classic (and cheapest) RTW tickets flit between a few big cities, for example, London – Bangkok – Singapore – Sydney – LA . If you want to link more offbeat hubs ( Baku – Kinshasa – Paramaribo , anyone?), prices will climb considerably. The cost of the ticket is also based on the total distance covered or the number of countries visited.

A train crossing a bridge curves through lush green hillsides in India

Remember, you donʼt have to fly between each point: in Australia you could land in Perth , travel overland and fly out of Cairns . Or fly into Moscow , board the Trans-Siberian railway  and fly onwards from Beijing.  Pick some personal highlights and string the rest of your itinerary around those. For instance, if youʼre a keen hiker, flesh out a Peru ( Inca Trail ) – New Zealand ( Milford Track ) – Nepal ( Everest Base Camp ) itinerary with stops in Yosemite , Menz-Gauassa and the Okavango Delta .

If budgetʼs an issue, spend more time in less expensive countries and plan budget city breaks along the way. You’ll spend more in metros like Paris, Dubai and San Francisco than in Nusa Tenggara , Budapest  and Buffalo .

Tips, tricks and pitfalls of round-the-world tickets

Talk to an expert before you book a round-the-world ticket: you may have an itinerary in mind, but an experienced RTW flight booker will know which routes work best and cost least. A few tweaks could mean big savings in time and money. Hash out a budget well ahead of time, not only for your RTW ticket, but also for the whole trip. Reach out to friends or travel bloggers who have done a round-the-world trip or are full-time travelers because they can offer tips on how to budget for a trip around the world .

Be flexible: moving your departure date by a few days can save money. Mid-week flights are generally cheaper, as are flights on major holidays such as Christmas Day. Avoid days and times popular with business travelers to escape higher prices and more crowded cabins.

Think about internal travel: it can be cheaper to book internal flights at the same time as booking your RTW ticket, but with the global increase of low-cost airlines, you may find it better (and more flexible) to buy them separately as you go.

Be warned: if you donʼt board one of your booked flights (say, on a whim, you decide to travel overland from Bangkok to Singapore rather than fly it) your airline is likely to cancel all subsequent flights.

<p>With its wide stretch of golden sand and top-notch restaurants, Biarritz on the French coast makes a chic stop. But for something more unusual take a detour to Espelette, a village 14 miles inland.</p> <p>The main export here is dried red peppers, much celebrated by top chefs. Towards the end of the summer, these vibrant Espelette peppers adorn the village's traditional Basque houses and stores as they are hung to dry.</p>

It may be just five miles long, but with its panoramic sea views and roller coaster twists and turns, Norway’s Atlantic Ocean Road will get your adrenaline soaring as high as the eagles flying above. It’s made up of eight bridges, linking 17 islets in the Western Fjords to the mainland at Eide.

Route 66 is the quintessential American road trip. Connecting Chicago to LA, across some 2,451 miles and eight states, it takes travelers into a bygone era of kitsch Americana. Think neon signs, retro gas stations, and motels, ideally all experienced from behind the wheel of a Mustang.

Route 66, USA

<p>For a classic slice of Route 66 history, stop for a photo at the Ambler’s Texaco gas station in Dwight, Illinois. Once the longest-running gas station on the highway, it was donated to the village of Dwight and lovingly restored. There’s no gas though, so fill up elsewhere!</p>

Dubbed Scotland’s answer to Route 66, the North Coast 500 traces the coast of the North Highlands, taking in vast lochs, enchanting castles, white sand beaches, and dramatic cliffs. The 500-mile route starts and ends at Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

<p>The masses head to John O’Groats, under the misconception that it’s the northernmost tip of Great Britain. In fact the accolade goes to the lesser-known Dunnet Head, accessed by a single track road.</p> <p>With its brilliant white lighthouse perched high above the Atlantic, views over the Orkneys, and the chance to spot puffins, it’s worth the trip.</p>

Carretera Austral, Chile

<p>With no roads and limited electricity, Caleta Tortel – at the Carretera’s southern tip – is truly remote. Set on a milky jade bay at the mouth of the Baker River, this wooden fishing village is navigated by miles of boardwalks.</p> <p>Delve even further into the wilderness with a three-hour boat trip to the bright blue Ventisquero Steffens Glacier.</p>

Yes, it’s a crowd pleaser, but don’t miss the raw power of Petrohué Falls, with the staggering Osorno Volcano as its backdrop. Hire a boat to take you to El Rincón, then walk three hours through rainforest and overhanging bridges to Termas de Callao hot springs.

Ease aching muscles in the hot baths, before turning back.

SHUTTERSTOCK/HANNES VAN DER MERWE

Data scientists and researchers at Misterb&b, the world’s largest LGBTQ + travel community, have used the habits of its 1 million registered users to create an index ranking the gayest cities in the world for 2024.

Founder Matthieu Jost created Misterb&b after he and his partner were victims of homophobia and harassment while trying to rent a room during a vacation in Spain.

The company connects LGBTQ+ travelers with rentals and services provided by family and allies in their destinations.

His latest feature, Weere, now allows travelers to connect socially before they travel. Users can chat with locals or make plans with fellow visitors.

You can learn more at misterbandb.com , but keep scrolling to find the 15 gayest cities in the world for U.S. travelers according to Misterb&b.

Charleston, South Carolina's historic French Quarter skyline.

If you amble down Legare (pronounced Luh-gree) Street, one of the prettiest streets in Charleston’s South of Broad, you pass filigree ironwork gates and secret gardens, antebellum mansions and live oaks. Then suddenly, in front of one of the mansions, there’s a large stone half circle on the street.

An example of the intricate iron gates in front of Charleston mansions and gardens

“Can you guess what that is,” asks Bill Harris, founder, co-owner and extremely knowledgeable private guide of Oyster Point Tours which specializes in detailed, authentic walking tours around the city. I ask whether it relates to the cotton or rice trade, the industries that led to the fortunes of many of the former residents of this street. A mark of a secret society? An industrial accident? “Think of a woman wearing a voluminous hoop skirt climbing into a carriage,” Harris says. “She can’t get into it from the street but she can if she stands on this stone, half of a grinding wheel.” In that moment, one image makes history come alive; it’s easy to imagine the personalities, the social life, the day to day activities of this street and with it, of this beguiling city.

The mansions of The Battery facing Charleston Harbor

Charleston has long been admired as the belle of the south, with street upon cobblestone street lined with those terraced, colorful mansions and flowering trees. The history, of course, is more complicated than that. When you stand on the Battery and look across Charleston harbor, you can see Fort Sumter, the attack on which started the Civil War. Looking out through the windows of the impressive International African American Museum which opened last year and describes the African diaspora in extensive detail, you see Gadsden’s Wharf where an estimated 40% of African captives entered this country as slaves. In 2018, the Charleston City Council passed a resolution acknowledging and apologizing for its slavery role.

One Of The Best Shows Of 2024 Lands On Netflix Today

Airtag 2024: iphone update reveals apple launching significant new feature, a psychologist explores the rise of hikikomori syndrome.

The colorful houses of Rainbow Row.

On a lighter note, even the city’s very proper image may not be as true as it seems. “Charleston is a drinking town with a history problem,” according to a guide I overheard walking his guests past the multicolored houses of Rainbow Row. It may not be as obvious about it as a well known party town like New Orleans, which it reportedly exceeds in alcohol consumption, but residents clearly like to have a good time and the lively bar and restaurant scene reflects it.

Among the best of many options: The Citrus Club atop the Dewberry Hotel combines cocktails with rooftop views of the city; the subterranean Bar Vauté below Brasserie La Banque has more of a speakeasy feel; Proof , street level on King Street, specializes in high end craft cocktails with a large list for wines by the glass. Other popular bars also feature top notch food such as Xiao Bao Biscuit located in a former gas station with a pan-Asian menu and 39 Rue de Jean , a lively, brick walled brasserie.

A selection of dishes at Vern's

The restaurant scene is, as always, energetic with some familiar chefs back on the scene in new ventures. The Elliotborough neighborhood bistro Vern’s represents a return to town of Bethany and Dano Heinze, formerly behind the Charleston institution McCrady’s, and it’s a tough reservation to get. (There are, however, seats at the small bar for walk-ins.) The menu is American/Lowcountry/idiosyncratic with sizeable portions of really delicious options such as Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with Cherry Bomb Pepper, Cabbage and Smoked Hollandaise, Grilled Pork Loin with Lion’s Mane Mushrooms, Sweet Potato and Black Truffles, the scalloped pasta Campanelli with rabbit, black pepper and Vacche Rosse cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano taken to the next level) and Charred Sourdough with Allium Butter and Dill.

Crispy quail at Lowland

After 15 years and a James Beard Award at the ongoing culinary powerhouse FIG, Jason Stanhope opened Lowland last November in the former Lequeux-Williams House, a former private residence that dates to 1843 on George Street, now part of The Pinch hotel complex. Originally, the three dining rooms, each decorated with early Americana artifacts and wall coverings/murals featured a tavern menu downstairs and tasting menu upstairs but all three serve the tavern a la carte menu now and the flavors displayed are enticingly vivid. Among the appealing featured dishes: Chicken + Shrimp Skewers which deserve a better name because they’re a piquant/slightly sweet knob of lacquered chicken wrapped around the shrimp not pieces stacked alongside; Covington Sweet Potato Ravioli with brown butter, sage and amaretti; Rigatoni + Calabrian Pork Ragu; Crispy Quail and Pork Cutlet Parmigiana. Plus, for dessert, an irresistible version of a classic English dessert: Banoffee Pudding.

The Quinte Oyster Bar

Across the alley from Lowland and also part of The Pinch, The Quinte Oyster Bar originally opened in 2022 and reopened under Stanhope’s direction also in November. The curated menu includes a daily changing menu of local oysters, Tuna Crudo with Salsa Criolla and Horseradish, Seafood Chowder, Chilled Tarvin Shrimp with fancy Cognac sauce and soft serve vanilla ice cream with either aged balsamico and extra virgin olive oil or brown butter and pecans.

Roasted oysters with Creole butter and hushpuppy crumble at Delaney Oyster House

Naturally, in a city renowned for its seafood, it isn’t alone. James London, the chef of Chubby Fish , down the street from Vern’s, was recently named a 2024 James Beard Award semifinalist for his globetrotting creations such as Grilled Oysters with crab fat curry and cashews. A panoply of seafood, some with a distinctly Latin tilt and all of it sparkling fresh, fills the menu of Delaney Oyster House; dishes include Roasted Oysters with Creole Butter and Hushpuppy Crumble, Spanish Octopus and Royal Red Shrimp and Bucatini. Fleet Landing is a longstanding, reliable spot for Seafood Towers, Crab Cakes, Fried Seafood Platters, Blue Crab Dip and She-Crab Soup with waterfront views from the terrace overlooking the Cooper River. And smack in the middle of the historic district on East Bay Street, Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar is brimming with oyster varieties and dishes such as Sweet and Spicy Shrimp and Lowcountry Seafood Pirlou (Charleston’s version of Jambalaya.) It’s also across the street from Carmella’s Cafe and Dessert Bar with its large, rich, sweet and incredibly popular (order online to avoid waiting on line) chocolate peanut butter, carrot and cannoli cakes.

A bedroom at The Pinch

Where to Stay: With both Lowland and The Quinte Oyster Bar as part of the hotel, guests of The Pinch might not feel the need to have a kitchen but each of the 25 suites spread among three buildings here has one and a deluxe one at that with marble or black walnut countertops and top of the line appliances. The overall tone of the hotel is fresh and contemporary but with a mix of designs and furnishings from different eras giving it a more layered, nuanced depth. It’s also on the corner of George and King Streets, nirvana for shoppers given the lineup on King Street and for checking out other restaurant options. The only drawback: suites facing busy King Street directly may get some street noise; additional soundproofing would be useful.

Outdoor seating at Zero George

In contrast, the tenor of Zero George at the other end of George Street, could not be quieter and more relaxing; behind tall gates, it’s a complex of five 1800s-era buildings with historic residences and brick carriage houses surrounding a private garden courtyard with separate areas of chairs, couches and tables. Guests use them during the day for alfresco dining with the generous complimentary breakfasts, including flaky biscuits and a cooked kitchen option, the complimentary wine and charcuterie hour at 5:00 every day and for general hanging out in-between sightseeing and after dinner.

The whimsical presentations of the opening acts including foie gras and steak tartare of the ... [+] Restaurant at Zero George tasting menu.

The overall tone is cossetting and old fashioned in the best way: traditional, European-influenced décor in the 16 suites and one-to-three-bedroom residences and a staff that seemingly can’t do enough for guests. The property is also home to The Caviar Bar and the esteemed Restaurant at Zero George from chef Vinson Petrillo (who also recently opened the coastal Italian restaurant Costa in town) which draws locals and guests from other hotels in town for creative, whimsical tasting menus with courses that actually taste as good as they look. And positioned on the corner of East Bay Street, it’s an easy walk south from the hotel to the major historical sites. (Also since the restaurant doesn’t serve lunch, it’s an easy walk to Ted’s Butcherblock , a market and cafe around the corner to pick up a sandwich such as their bestselling Wagyu beef with caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms and blue cheese aioli on a ciabatta roll.) If there weren’t so much else to see and try in town, though, it would be tempting for guests to not leave the grounds at all.

Filet Mignon topped with fried oysters, BBQ oysters and Skillet corn bread with honey butter at The ... [+] Independent.

While in Charleston: It’s easy to venture north or south for a sidetrip. About an hour north, the historic town of Georgetown is a fishing mecca with tournaments from January through April; kayaking tours are also available through tranquil coastal rivers. The town also has a new, design forward boutique hotel The George with a restaurant The Independent featuring spins on Southern dishes such as She-Crab Soup, BBQ Clams, Skillet Corn Bread with Honey Butter, Blackened Flounder with Lump Crab & Andouille Sausage Pileau and Hummingbird (spice) Cake with Brown Butter Cream Cheese Icing, Salted Caramel Sauce and Spiced Pecans that are so delicious they would justify a trip here on their own.

The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection, set to open on Johns Island south of Charleston in August.

In the other direction, Kiawah Island Golf Resort , a well-known residential beach and golf destination, is an hour south of the city. Set to open in August on the banks of the Kiawah River on nearby Johns Island: The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection will feature 72 rooms in breezy, Southern style of honey oak floors, mint green accents and rustic prints along with a classic Southern menu and activities utilizing the 20 miles of waterfront.
