St Martin's tourism industry has almost entirely collapsed. St Martin/St Maarten and its surrounding islands are suffering from a severe economic downturn, putting many people out of work and under incredible strain, given that tourism drives the region's economy.

A way to help the locals is to  consider rescheduling your travel plans instead of cancelling  bookings entirely.

If you have the time, why not  explore more of the region  than you may have previously considered.  St Martin ,  Saba ,  Anguilla  and  St Barths  are all within easy reach of each other and offer something unique and worth experiencing.

You can learn more about the region to help plan your trip on our dedicated  Travel Tips  pages.

An ideal island for kids, St. Maarten/St. Martin offers a wide variety of activities to make children of all ages happy. Visit one of the 37 beautiful beaches , introduce them to a new water sport or explore exotic nature reserves . Many activities are ocean oriented, like snorkeling , diving , jet-skiing, parasailing and island boat tours .

Discover the beauty of the marine park with its colorful fish, turtles, rays and corals. Scuba diving centers have experienced divers to instruct and certify children 10 years or older. Windsurfing and surfing lessons for children are available on the calm waters of Galion Bay and Orient Beach . Sailing lessons on real racing yachts are accessible for kids age 12 or older, and no prior sailing experience is required. Guided kayak tours in the mangroves are also fantastic.

Emilio Wilson Park , located in Dutch Cul de Sac, is a great park for children to play. Seaside Nature Park in Cole Bay has horseback/pony rides for all levels, and a discovery farm with all miniature farm animals and a small playground. Special zip lines at Loterie Farm near Pic Paradis on the French side are great for kids, too.

Many hotels and resorts have babysitting services and kids’ clubs with professional staff to supervise children. VIP babysitting services allow infants, children, teens and young adults to have an opportunity to create, learn, discover and enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean in the privacy of their villa or mega-yacht , and are available days, evenings and overnight stays but must be booked well in advance.

St. Maarten/St. Martin is a melting pot with over 100 different nationalities. On the French side , French is spoken in government departments and schools. On the Dutch side , Dutch is used in government departments and some schools, but English is widely spoken everywhere. Spanish, Creole and Papiamento are also widely spoken on both sides.

Both sides have a variety of nature parks, protected beaches and waters. Environmental protection and the development of commercial activities work together; dive clubs and tour companies offer excursions in the protected waters of the Réserve Naturelle ( French side ). All partners are committed to respecting the environment, defending environmental regulations and educating about all the natural heritage sites. Some of these protected sites are The Tiki Hut and Seaside Nature Park, Pinel Island , Tintamarre , Orient Bay and Creole Rock . Sea turtles are protected animals on the island, and the St. Maarten Nature Foundation Sea Turtle Watch Group has initiatives for their conservation. Both governments may forbid certain activities in certain areas (such as hiking , motorized transportation and anchorage).

You may bring pets to the island, but first consult your hotel or host to ensure your pet is welcome. Animals are temporarily admitted with a health certificate dated no more than 10 days before visit and a record of inoculations, including a rabies shot administered no more than 30 days before travel. On the French side , small dogs on a leash are welcome in most places but are not allowed on beaches .

Approximately 41,000 people live on St. Maarten and 36,000 on St. Martin, for a combined total of 77,000.

St. Maarten/St. Martin is a peaceful mix of Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Baptist, Anglican, Methodist, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh-day Adventist, Rastafarian and Hindu communities. Due to widespread immigration and the multiethnic culture of the island, many religious communities coexist side by side. Religion plays an important role in daily life, so it’s important to respect everyone.

Travelers are always advised to take safety precautions. It is discouraged to walk alone in quiet or deserted streets, especially at night. Only marked taxis booked through a reputable service should be used. Valuables should be locked in your hotel ’s safe. Do not leave handbags or other valuables unattended in cars or on beaches . Although all 37 beaches are public, keep in mind there are no lifeguards present. It is ideal to use credit cards and not carry large amounts of cash.

Traveling to St. Maarten/St. Martin during covid - what to know

I had several people message me on Instagram worried about timing everything right (getting the negative covid test in time and then applying). I was worried about it as well, but it ended up being simple! We did a PCR test at CVS 4 days before and got the results the next day. As soon as we got the results we applied and uploaded the negative test. Within a couple of hours, we were approved and good to go!

I know it seems a little daunting, so please feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Are there border crossings on St. Maarten between the Dutch and French side?

Nope! The island has open borders between the Dutch and French sides. You will go through customs upon arriving in St. Maarten but will not have to do any kind of customs or passport check driving from one side of the island to the other!

Plane-spotting in St. Martin

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Plane-spotting anyone?

One of our favorite destinations at The Points Guy is St Martin/Sint Maarten which has updated its health and safety guidelines along with COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travelers.

We mostly love St Martin because of the incredible plane-spotting opportunities at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Well, that and the beaches. You can literally sit on a beach or at the famous Sunset Bar and Grill and watch planes land over your head at Maho Beach.

  • There is a mandatory health authorization application through an Electronic Health Authorization System (EHAS) for every visitor arriving by air including transits, Sint Maarten and St. Martin residents. Without the health pre-authorization, boarding will not be possible. Processing time can take up to 12 hours.
  • Travel insurance — all visitors must buy mandatory COVID-19 health insurance prior to travel ( https://www.sxmprotectionplan.com )

If you do need a COVID-19 test, St. Martin provides a list of testing providers here.

What's open?

St. Martin no longer has a curfew in place, it was lifted back in June. Most hotels and attractions are open again. The French side of the island (St. Martin) is no longer banning cross-border travel to visitors to and from the Dutch side (Sint Maarten) as it did in 2020 at the height of pandemic concerns. The two countries share the island.

From sailing and island tours to day trips that include snorkeling and jet skiing, most restaurants, shops and attractions are open for visitors, as regular safety measures of masking up and sanitizing stay in place.

The Sonesta Ocean Point Resort is literally down the street from the airport, but it's pricey at $561/night in the first week of January 2022. There are more reasonable options such as Divi Little Bay Beach Resort starting at $249 a night and the Sonesta Maho Beach All Inclusive Resort Casino & Spa has rates starting at $215/night in January. It's a short walk to Maho Beach or you can do plane-spotting from your hotel room — that's how close it is to the airport.

  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash
  • Avoid showing signs of affluence
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
  • Make sure purses and handbags are closed and not easy to snatch
  • Avoid isolated or poorly-lit areas, including beaches
  • Don’t leave valuables unattended on the beach
  • Check with local authorities to determine which beaches are safe

Violent crime

Violent crime, including armed robbery, has increased. Criminals sometimes target tourists. Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution, especially at night

Burglaries occur regularly in resorts, seaside homes and hotels. Keep valuables, travel documents, and cash in safe locations, such as in hotel safes.

Fraud involving use of credit cards, debit cards and ATMs may occur.

When using your bank card or credit card:

  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others

Women's safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment, verbal abuse and sexual assault.

Advice for women travellers

Demonstrations and strikes

Demonstrations and strikes may cause disruptions to services. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Water activities

Coastal waters can be dangerous, and riptides are common. Beaches are unsupervised, and there is no flag warning system to provide notice of water conditions and safety risks. Water pollution is also a problem.

  • Don’t swim alone
  • Keep a safe distance from boats and restricted areas
  • Consult residents and tour operators for information on possible hazards and safe swimming areas
  • Don’t dive into unknown waters, as hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death

Water safety abroad

Adventure tourism

Outdoor activities, such as zip-lining, hiking, mountain biking and other adventure activities can be dangerous if unprepared. Trails are not always marked, equipment safety inspections are not carried out regularly, and weather conditions can change rapidly, even in the summer.

If you intend to practice adventure tourism:

  • never do so alone, and don’t part with your expedition companions
  • obtain detailed information on your activity and on the environment in which you will be before setting out
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • stay informed of weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • refrain from using equipment if you have doubts about the safety
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary

Road safety

The road network is well-maintained and it's possible to drive safely around the island.

There is severe traffic congestion during the tourist season, December to April.

The highway network consists of a belt that goes around both sides of the island, the French part, in Saint Martin, and the Dutch part, in Sint Maarten.

Canadian cell phones work throughout the country, and the network is reliable for emergency calls.

Emergency services, including roadside assistance, varies in availability depending on your rental company.

Road conditions

Driving conditions may be hazardous, especially during the rainy season, October to February.  Secondary and rural roads can be in poor condition.

Driving habits

Some drivers don’t respect traffic laws. They may be reckless.

Moped and scooter drivers sometimes engage in urban rodeos, riding on one wheel in front of other cars on the road. Such reckless behavior can be very dangerous for other drivers.

Public transportation

Minibuses are available.

Buses are available.

Taxis are available. Taxis are plentiful and are a convenient way to get around during short stays.

Ridesharing services

Ridesharing services are not available in Saint Martin.

Ferry services are available to Saint Barthelemy and Anguilla.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical services and facilities

Good-quality medical services are available. There are two hospitals in Saint Martin, Hospital Center Louis Constant Fleming and Marigot Hospital. Payment in advance is often expected.

Emergency services don't always respond quickly. Ambulances are equipped to deal with basic emergencies. Ambulance services are provided by private companies, not by hospitals.

Travelers requiring specialized care or with serious injuries may be evacuated to Guadeloupe or Martinique. Medical evacuation can be very expensive.

Medical evacuation can be very expensive and you may need it in case of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Why Go To St. Martin - St. Maarten

If you associate the Caribbean with a laid-back atmosphere, a tranquil beach and a quiet sunset, then you haven't been to feisty St. Martin and St. Maarten. What's the best part of visiting this dual-governed island? You can get a taste of two distinct, lively cultures all for the price of one vacation. Like much of the Caribbean, the island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Make sure you call or check the websites of any businesses you plan to visit in advance to check on their status. The 37-square-mile dot is popular with travelers who like to eat well, party hard and shop duty-free in between trips to the beach. The north side, St. Martin, is controlled by the French government. It's the home of the island's tastiest restaurants and party beaches. Whereas cosmopolitan St. Maarten shelters the most animated casinos, bars and clubs. A territory of the Netherlands Antilles, St. Maarten takes up the southern 16 square miles.

But for all the excitement, St. Martin and St. Maarten still foster a stress-free vibe – starting out with how easily you can pass between both sides of the island. So catch a few morning rays on a quiet Dutch-side beach; later, take a leisurely afternoon stroll through a French-side mountain. You'll be more than primed to sneak back over the border for a night in the casinos.

St. Martin - St. Maarten Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Martin and St. Maarten is May and June or between November and mid-December. These select weeks are times when hotels advertise their best rates. The island's weather is pleasant year-round, but these are times when rain showers are less likely. Summer and early fall are not good for a vacation; many hotels close in this offseason and there's a chance of hurricanes. Also avoid visiting in winter and early spring (mid-December to April) if you can. That's when St. Martin and St. Maarten milks its wealthy vacationers.

Weather in St. Martin - St. Maarten

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

The official language In St. Martin it's French. Meanwhile, St. Maarten's official language is both Dutch and English. Confused yet? Don't worry – English is widely spoken throughout.

How to say "watch out" in Dutch You should definitely go to Maho Bay to see a few 747s land at the neighboring Princess Juliana International Airport. But  uitkijken ! This can be a scary, noisy and windy experience.

How to say "Live and Let Live" in French St. Martin's beaches are well-known for their  vivre et laisser vivre  philosophy on swimsuits (in other words, expect to see a lot of bare chests and bottoms).

How to Save Money in St. Martin - St. Maarten

Don't tip extra  You'll see some restaurants have put an extra 15-percent "tax" on the bill that the wait staff might neglect to tell you is their service charge. Don't tip extra unless your service was really exceptional.

Email, don't phone  Making a call from the French side to the Dutch side, and vice versa, is considered an international call. Some businesses will have two numbers (to help you avoid this particular nuisance), but if not, attempt to make restaurant reservations and book island tours by email.

Take the bus  Things move at a more leisurely pace in the Caribbean, so take advantage of that by taking the bus to the top tourist sites. There's no set schedule for drop-off and pick-ups, but you'll get where you want to go for about $1.50 one-way.

Culture & Customs

A true "Tale of Two Cities,"   the island of St. Martin and St. Maarten is proud of its dual heritage and customs. There is no physical border between the French and Dutch territories and people and goods may travel freely between both sides of the island. The Dutch side's official currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) while the official currency of the French side is the euro (EUR). However, the United States dollar is widely accepted, as are most major credit cards.

What to Eat

Bring your appetite to St. Martin/St. Maarten, because you'll most assuredly put it to good use. Fresh seafood is often the star of many menus here (it is an island, after all), but there is a rich variety of cuisines to be found, from high-end French to Lebanese to Italian to traditional barbecue. Typical Creole dishes often include conch, goat and oxtail. You'll also want to try the island's national liqueur, Guavaberry, made from rum, cane sugar and local, wild guavaberries. A bottle also makes a great souvenir to take home.

Some visitors say the island's dining is some of the best in the Caribbean, especially in the Grand Case area on the French side. Bistrot Caraibes in Grand Case consistently earns rave reviews from diners, who praise both its food and service. The restaurant's signature dish is lobster, a big favorite with repeat diners. La Villa Restaurant , another Grand Case mainstay, is equally praised for its French-Caribbean menu and exceptional service.

If you're looking for a casual meal, try one of the  lolos , or open-air restaurants on the beach (outdoor cooking on large barbecues is very popular here). In the evening, live music is often a staple at these local spots. Recent travelers especially enjoyed the bars and grills along Simpson Bay. The Palms was a particular favorite thanks to its Caribbean and international menu. Popular dishes include the jerk chicken and curry chicken. Izi Ristorant Italiano was also a hit for those passing through Simpson Bay for its variety of Italian classics.

The dual-nation island is just as safe as other island getaways. Crowds are denser in St. Maarten, however, so travelers should exercise common sense when moving around the tourist areas; leave your valuables at home, and only carry small bills. St. Martin and St. Maarten's visitors should also be mindful of the jet blast when watching the planes take off and land at  Maho Bay . Blasts of sand can be powerful depending on where you're standing, and spectators should prepare by bringing a brimmed hat and umbrella, in addition to plenty of sunscreen (the strong winds can make it hard to determine when you're sunburned). For that matter, sunscreen and a hat should always be worn, since the island is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, receiving the full force of the sun. A good pair of sunglasses is also a good idea.

Getting Around St. Martin - St. Maarten

The best way to get around St. Martin and St. Maarten is in a rental car. But really, outside of walking, just about any means of navigating between the French and Dutch sides of the island is manageable. Having a car will allow you more mobility and you'll find reasonable rental rates. Agencies are clustered on the outskirts of Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), located in St. Maarten. Unfortunately, traffic can be pretty heinous on both sides. The island buses also cater to tourists and are fairly cheap to ride. If you don't like the idea of waiting on a bus, consider splurging on a taxi. And if you're feeling adventurous you might want to use a scooter; there's nothing like feeling the sea breeze in your hair – ahem, helmet.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You can travel freely between this island's French and the Dutch sides, but you will need to present a passport that has at least six months remaining validity (for the French side) when you first arrive. A valid passport is all that is required to enter the Dutch side. You might also be asked to present your return ticket, proof of sufficient funds for your trip and proof of lodging. For more information on customs, visit the U.S. State Department's  for information on St. Martin here and for St. Maarten here . Tourist visas are not required.

Marigot Harbor sits on the French side of the island.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Saint Martin, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Saint Martin. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Saint Martin include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Saint Martin. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Saint Martin’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Saint Martin may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Saint Martin, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Helpful Resources

Road Safety Overseas (Information from the US Department of State): Includes tips on driving in other countries, International Driving Permits, auto insurance, and other resources.

The Association for International Road Travel has country-specific Road Travel Reports available for most countries for a minimal fee.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Saint Martin for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

Climate and Best Time for a St. Martin Vacation

St. Martin, with its tropical allure, is a year-round travel haven. It dons a warm, sunny disposition throughout the year, making it a perpetual magnet for sun seekers. Despite this, many travelers favor the months from December to April , when the island is graced with cooler temperatures and diminished rainfall, creating the perfect setting for outdoor exploration and beach lounging.

During this period, the island is at its vibrant best, as the streets buzz with vivacious festivals, and the local flora bursts into a spectacle of color. The azure waters are crystal clear, perfect for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts to explore the underwater marine life. Additionally, the trade winds provide ideal conditions for sailing and water sports, adding a thrilling dimension to your Caribbean vacation.

No matter when you choose to visit, St. Martin promises a tropical paradise replete with unforgettable experiences.

Must-Visit Attractions in St. Martin

St. Martin is an island that amazes travelers with its unique blend of natural wonders and historic sites.

Natural Wonders

Loterie Farm

On the slopes of Pic Paradis, the Loterie Farm offers a break from the beach scene. Lesser-known to tourists, this private nature reserve tempts visitors with a canopy adventure course, hiking trails, and a calm natural pool.

Pic Paradis Overlook

St. Martin’s highest point, Pic Paradis , provides a stunning panorama of the island. Few people know that there are two viewing areas, one showing the island’s luscious interior and the other offering a view of neighboring islands in the distance.

Historic Sites

Overlooking Marigot Bay, Fort Louis stands as a testament to St. Martin’s history. A less commonly known fact is that the cannons still visible were discovered underwater, having been thrown in the sea when the fort was abandoned.

The Old House

Also known as La Maison, the Old House is a living museum providing insights into traditional West Indian life. What’s unique is that it’s in a traditional West Indian home, offering an authentic glimpse into the past.

A Saint Martin travel experience isn’t complete without visiting these attractions. From the heights of Pic Paradis to the depths of Loterie Farm, and from the historic Fort Louis to the charming Old House, your St. Martin vacation will be filled with discovery. Experience the allure of St. Martin’s unique blend of nature and history on your visit.

Experiencing the Delightful St. Martin Cuisine

St. Martin, a culinary treasure of the Caribbean, combines local ingredients and international influences to create a flavor experience you won’t forget.

Local Delicacies

Accras de Morue

Accras de Morue, crispy saltfish fritters, are a much-loved starter on the island. A lesser-known fact is that these golden bites often feature in local festivals and gatherings, making them a part of St. Martin’s vibrant social scene.

Johnny Cake

St. Martin’s Johnny Cake, a fried cornbread, isn’t your usual sweet cake. This versatile treat often accompanies savory dishes, even replacing bread in sandwiches. It’s a local secret that some eateries serve them with a dusting of powdered sugar for a sweet twist.

Dining Experiences

Gourmet-Restaurants

St. Martin is also known as the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.” But few know that many of its gourmet restaurants, especially in Grand Case, often blend Creole flavors with French techniques, offering a truly unique dining experience.

Local Eateries

Local eateries, called “lolos,” are where you’ll find the heart of St. Martin’s cuisine. Interestingly, these modest establishments often serve some of the freshest seafood on the island, sourced from the local fishermen each day.

Whether you’re indulging in gourmet dining or exploring the flavors at a local lolo, experiencing St. Martin’s cuisine is a highlight of any St. Martin vacation. Embark on a culinary adventure and discover the delightful tastes of this vibrant island on your next Saint Martin travel.

Unpacking the Costs: What to Expect When Budgeting for St. Martin

Visiting St. Martin is an unforgettable experience, but it’s essential to understand the costs involved. Here’s a breakdown to help you budget for your Saint Martin travel.

Average Costs for Food

Meal Expenses at Restaurants

Eating out at restaurants in St. Martin offers a blend of gourmet cuisine and local flavors. Typically, an average meal costs between $20 to $40 per person, though upscale restaurants may be higher. Not commonly known, lunch is often less expensive than dinner, offering a budget-friendly option to enjoy the island’s gastronomy.

Cost of Local Street Food

For a budget-friendly food experience, local street food costs around $5-$10 per meal. Besides being economical, it’s a lesser-known fact that these food stalls often carry traditional dishes you won’t find in restaurants.

Average Costs for Travel and Accommodation

Transportation Expenses

Renting a car is a common way to explore St. Martin, with rental rates averaging $30-$40 per day. Unexpectedly, you’ll find gas prices higher than in the US, due to import costs, averaging about $1.40 per liter.

Accommodation Rates

The cost of accommodation can vary widely, depending on your preference. Budget guesthouses can range from $70-$90 per night, while luxury hotels may cost $250-$500 per night. Unknown to many, off-peak season rates are significantly lower, making the dream of a St. Martin vacation more achievable.

Understanding these costs will ensure a smoother travel experience, allowing you to focus on creating unforgettable memories in St. Martin.

Tips for a Successful Saint Martin Travel

Planning a St. Martin vacation requires insightful decision-making. Here are some tips for a successful travel experience.

Best Time to Visit

Traveling during Off-peak Seasons

Traveling in the off-peak season, generally May to November, lets you enjoy the island’s beauty with fewer crowds and lower prices. It’s a lesser-known fact that rainfall is often brief and followed by sunshine during these months, making it a viable option for budget travelers.

Attending Local Festivals

St. Martin’s colorful local festivals are a treat to witness. For example, the lesser-known Marigot Fisherman’s Festival in July offers authentic cultural experience not commonly experienced by tourists.

Safety and Health Precautions

Travel Insurance

While St. Martin is a safe destination, investing in travel insurance provides peace of mind. Beyond common knowledge, insurance can also cover trip cancellations, an aspect often overlooked by travelers.

Vaccinations

Routine vaccines should be up-to-date before any overseas travel. While it’s common knowledge to take malaria precautions, it’s less known that there’s no risk of Yellow Fever in St. Martin. So, the Yellow Fever vaccine is unnecessary.

These tips ensure your Saint Martin travel is nothing short of a memorable adventure.

The Ultimate St. Martin Travel Guide

When it came to where to vacation in the Caribbean this spring , my husband and I decided on St. Martin. We were looking for something easy to get to from the states, with a gorgeous hotel that we could post up at for some much needed R&R. We were also looking for something baby-friendly, since we wanted to bring our little 11-month-old boy along, too! St. Martin turned out to be the best getaway for our little family. Only a few hours away from Miami, it’s an easy one stop from most places in the USA, or a direct from the big airports! The hotel we chose was absolutely UNREAL (I get into that more below) and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. It definitely won’t be our last time in St. Martin!! Whether you’re traveling to St. Martin on a romantic getaway as a couple, as a family on a family vacation , or as a group on an adult spring break , here are all of my tips to make sure you have the best trip to St. Martin, from where to stay, to what to eat, what to do, the best beaches, beach clubs, and more.

Where to stay in St. Martin

The jetset pick: belmond la samanna .

The Belmond La Samanna is the nicest resort on St. Martin. It was built to feel like Greece, but in the tropics, and is characterized by gorgeous Mediterranean architecture and lush tropical foliage, with colorful details and bouganvillea that makes you feel like you’re somewhere between Italy and Greece. Belmond never misses, and La Samanna is one of their best resorts. It’s exclusive and boasts one of the best beaches in St. Martin, or even the entire Caribbean, on Baie Longue. There are 83 beautifully-decorated ocean-view guest rooms, suites, and multi-bedroom villas, and all of the facilities here are colorful, chic, tropical, and make for an absolutely perfect Caribbean vacation.

We stayed in a oceanview suite with terrace . All of the rooms at La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel, St Martin have stunning private balconies and some even have a plunge pool. I don’t think it’s necessary, however, since the beach is right there! And the main pools on property are SO beautiful (and kid-friendly!).

What is the best time of year to visit St. Martin?

We traveled to St. Martin in May, which we found to be absolutely perfect weather. The best time to visit is the shoulder season between high season (December through April) and the hurricane season which starts in June/July and goes until November.

How long does it take to get to St. Martin?

It’s a four hour direct flight from JFK, a 4 hour from Charlotte, or a 3 hour flight from Miami.

Is St. Martin safe?

We found St. Martin to be very safe, it’s known as the friendly island, and you feel that right when you touch down at the airport. It was easy to get a taxi and the taxi operators were the best ambassadors for their friendly island! They were awesome.

The main tourist areas of St. Martin are generally safe, but you should take sensible precautions as a traveler. Don’t wear too flashy of belongings while walking around in public places, etc.

Is St. Martin baby-friendly?

Yes! St. Martin is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the Caribbean, and a great destination to travel with little ones due to its calm beaches, soft sand, kid-friendly restaurants, and warm weather (we also didn’t experience any wind on the beach – at least in May – like we did when were in Anguilla in March!) We had the best time in St. Martin traveling with our baby. The hotel ( Belmond La Samanna ) felt extremely safe and easy to navigate with a baby!

What to do in St. Martin

Pinel Island – Head to the Yellow Beach Beach Club: get the lobster fresh from the ocean! SO GOOD!

Mullet Bay is a secluded and spacious beach on St. Martin. You can rent chairs and umbrellas from the snack bars on the south side, or go to the secluded northern end for a little privacy. I’d recommend getting a reservation ahead of time at Kalatua Beach Club.

Mykonos Club

If you’re looking for an outdoor party scene, or visiting on a holiday like New Years Eve, this is your spot. Mykonos is set amongst the crashing waves and incoming planes on the shore of Maho Beach. The focal point of the club is their zero-entry pool making every night feel like the ultimate pool party.

Maho Beach to see the airplanes land in St Martin

You’ve probably seen videos of Maho Beach when looking up St. Martin. Maho is a unique beach in St. Maarten, where travelers flock to experience the thrilling rush of airplanes flying extremely close over your head! The best time to go to Maho Beach is in the early afternoon which is when the larger jumbo jets land. Head to Sunset Beach Bar for the best views of the planes!

Wow! This is amazing and beautiful. Happy to know that English is widely spoken. Thank you for this very detailed guide. Very helpful for first-time travelers like me.

This island of many names is known to me as “The Island We Were Supposed to Honeymoon On”! Many years ago, we’d made plans to spend several days in St. Martin when my (now ex) husband and I were to be married. Long story short, our circumstances changed and we instead spent the night in Boston at a luxury hotel. That was lovely, however, it can’t compare to St. Martin! Your post reminds me of all the good reasons to visit this beautiful destination. Thanks for the inspiration to visit solo, soon!

Really lovely to learn more about St Maarten and St Martin, as they are a destination I’ve not read much about previously. Seems like a really interesting place with many different cultural / language influences from the UK, Netherlands, France, and Spain! The landscapes and seascapes look spectacular and good to know a car rental is a good way to travel, as that’s a favourite for us. I’ll look out for that guavaberry liqueur!

Here’s my comment: It’s fascinating. It is geographically close to America, but it belongs to France & Netherlands. So they use both Euro & USD! It’s so tiny and still owned by 2 countries! It’s intriguing. Indeed it is a bit like Belgium which is also half Dutch & half French. It is considered the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean? Wow. That’s promising. Yoda guy movie exhibit sounds interesting. I really wouldn’t miss the guavaberry-flavored rum!

Thanks for the nice read! I have been fascinated by the island of St Maarten/ St Martin since university days. Back then I attended a lecture about the multicultural society of St Maarten/ St Martin. The presenter showed a lot of pictures too and I loved it. Your post brought the island back on my travel wish list!

St Maarten and St Martin although similar sounding seem quite different. A very nice guide detailing all possible thoughts. While in St Maarten sampling a few of the 50+ flavors of rum would be really nice since I used to be a rum drinker in my younger days. Checking out the mega-yachts of Simpson Bay lagoon should be fun as well. Wouldn’t mind checking out the nudist resort Club Orient. Watching the view from Pic Paradis and exploring Fort Louis should be a good experience in St Martin.

St. Maarten is generally considered a safe place to visit, but as with any tourist destination, there are some general safety precautions you should take. St. Martin is one of the safest warm weather climates (outside the US) locations to visit. However, you will still hear of crime here and there, so you should always watch your back, walk-in groups, and be aware of your surroundings.

One of the biggest crimes here is passport theft. The perpetrators then “doctor” the passport to serve their particular purposes. Because of this St Martin travel experts recommend carrying your original driver’s license with you, but carrying a photocopy of your passport and keeping the original in your hotel safe. But if the copy does get stolen, be sure to notify the authorities. In addition, rental cars are often broken into.  However, they do ask you to leave your car unlocked and do not leave anything in the rental car as the damage caused to break in is costly.

Okay, so there are certainly oodles of much prettier beaches lining the shores of St. Martin, both on the Dutch and French sides of the island. Final thoughts on St Martin

At once French and Dutch, lively and laid-back, graced with pretty beaches and rising to palm-studded hilltops, famed for its shopping and sweet guava berry rums, seaside beach bars, and casino-lead nightlife, there are many sides to little St. Martin. It’s hardly a wonder that so many cruise ships opt to drift into the harbors of Marigot and Philipsburg on their way through the currents of the region. There are also opportunities to hit the jet skis and see multi-colored butterflies, to sail across to untrodden islands and unravel the history of colonial conflicts between The Netherlands and Spanish sailors, to talk to macaws and see bearded monkeys, finishing off with a medley of tasty rums and Haute foods courtesy of the Parisian influence.

'Brat Pack' actor and travel writer Andrew McCarthy speaking at Canton Palace Theatre

is st martin open for travel

  • Actor Andrew McCarthy, known for the '80s movies 'Pretty in Pink,' 'St. Elmo's Fire' and 'Mannequin,' will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at Canton Palace Theatre.
  • McCarthy is a travel writer and author, including the New York Times bestseller, "Walking with Sam."
  • Admission to McCarthy's presentation is free but reservations must be made online through the Stark Library.

Actor Andrew McCarthy, known for his roles in the movies "St. Elmo's Fire" and "Weekend at Bernie's," is also a travel writer. McCarthy, who wrote the book, "Walking with Sam," will be the Stark County Library's guest author and speaker on May 11 at the Canton Palace Theatre.

Andrew McCarthy sounded every bit of four decades removed from his "Brat Pack" Hollywood glory days while discussing the 500-mile trek he took with his teenage son across the famed El Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Far in the rearview mirror were his starring roles in the '80s movies "Pretty in Pink," "St. Elmo's Fire" and "Weekend at Bernie's."

McCarthy was merely dad, not a celebrity. Sometimes dismissively referred to as "bro" by his 19-year-old son, Sam. Other times tapped for advice while the younger McCarthy grappled with the aftermath of a breakup from his girlfriend.

Along the blister-inducing journey in the summer of 2021, the father-son dynamic was often as bumpy as the rugged terrain. However, by the end, there were bonding moments, even transcendent ones, where the parent was schooled by the child.

Standing outside the splendor of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the elder McCarthy was dejected because the portico was locked. Touching the Tree of Jesse was also forbidden due to erosion. Neither could he hug the statue of St. James.

"It's OK," the son said while draping an arm over his dad's shoulder. "This one truly was about the journey." Earlier on the trip, Sam had blown off similar advice from his dad. Now he espoused it.

Asked if such revelatory moments still happen with his son today, McCarthy turned to a recent anecdote.

"About three days ago, he called me up and said, 'Dad, you got seven minutes?' And I was like, 'Go,'" the father recalled with affection. "And he just wanted to work through something he was going through, and he just wanted to bounce it off me, and that's a phone call that probably wouldn't have happened if we hadn't of walked together."

McCarthy relays and explores those father-son moments profoundly, humorously and candidly in the New York Times bestselling book, " Walking with Sam: A Father, A Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain ." His other works include " Brat: An '80s Story ," "Just Fly Away" and "The Longest Way Home."

McCarthy talked openly during a 25-minute phone call promoting a book tour that will bring him to the Canton Palace Theatre at 6:30 p.m. May 11 as part of the Stark County Library's Speaking of Books Author Series. Admission is free but reservations must be made at https://www.starklibrary.org/ or by calling 330-452-0665. VIP meet-and-greet tickets also can be purchased.

McCarthy has lots to tell. So many films, so many Hollywood encounters, so many lessons learned, so many miles logged across the globe as an award-winning travel writer , including a stint as editor-at-large of National Geographic Traveler magazine.

During the interview, McCarthy touched on it all, plus some unexpected subjects, including what he thought of a Taylor Swift concert he attended with his teen daughter and which of his '80s movies most deserves a sequel.

Walking across Spain: 'It's a life-changing experience for anybody.'

McCarthy had walked the El Camino 25 years earlier while in the throes of a professional and personal crisis.

"It's just a place where I feel very at home in myself," he said of travel in general. "I often joke that the further from home I get, the more at home in myself I feel. The more out of my normal comfort zone I am, sort of the better I respond.

"The Camino was a transformative experience for me the first time I did it," McCarthy said. "... As my son was growing and our relationship was sort of evolving, I wanted it to evolve into like two men. How does one do that? I didn't have a template for that in m own life, so I thought (walking the Camino) would be a wonderful way to transition our relationship from dominant parent to submissive or rebellious kid to adult learning to communicate on an equal level. So I thought the Camino would sort of jumpstart that process, which it did."

Of "Walking with Sam," he said: "It's really about fathers and sons and your place in that and how do we manage that.

"And that's one of the great things about walking and walking that long of a distance," McCarthy said. "You can try to be however you're going to be, but yourself comes out pretty quickly when you're walking 15 miles and you've got blisters and you're tired and you need a place to sleep. You're you. That was just a great experience to share with (Sam) in that regard.

"On day two on the walk, he said, 'Dad, what's the point of this? And on the last day of the walk, he said, 'That's the only 10 out of 10 thing that I've ever done in my life,' so something happened."

The intimate relationship of author and reader

Being recognized and appreciated as a writer is rewarding, McCarthy said.

"I was lucky enough to be on TV and in movies," he said. "When people come up to you about a book, it's a very different thing, and it's much more personal in a certain way because you know it's a very intimate relationship with someone reading a book.

"They take you to bed at night usually, and they're alone with you in bed for an hour before they go to bed. And to ask someone for their time in that way, you have to sort of meet them and come clean with them."

And "I'll put down things on paper that strangers will read that I'd be very hesitant to say in the rest of my life," he added. "There's something about the act of writing that you disclose these kinds of things."

The 'Brat Pack' is an avatar 'of a certain generation's youth.'

McCarthy is clearly still more widely known for being a member of the "Brat Pack," however.

"I think it's kind of an amazing thing at this point," he said. "The 'Brat Pack' (actors and movies) are the avatars of a certain generation's youth.

"You look at those things and you start talking, 'Oh, I love that movie,'" he said. "You're talking about your own youth, and I come to represent that. I just hold up a mirror to that because there's no more exciting and wondrous time in life than when we're in our late teens and 20s. You're just cusping into your own life and you're taking the world by the tail, and your life's a blank slate to be written on, and it's a thrilling moment in life. And I and other members of the 'Brat Pack' and the other people who were in those movies represent that for a group of people.

"And it took me a long time, but I realize that's sort of a wonderful gift I've been given, to be that role for certain people, and there's great affection and fondness for those movies for me as well," McCarthy continued. "You know, they're flawed certainly (and from) another time, but I loved those movies."

McCarthy is open to a sequel to 'St. Elmo's Fire'

When asked which of his '80s movies deserved a sequel, McCarthy didn't hesitate − "St. Elmo's Fire."

"It always pops up occasionally," he said of the talk of a sequel. "Sure, I'm game. I love that character ( Kevin Dolenz ) in 'St. Elmo's Fire.' I thought he was a great character for me at that time in my life, and what happened to him 30 years later, I think that would be interesting.

"I mean, sure, why not," McCarthy said. "Somebody comes up with a good idea (and) has some money to do it.

"That character was really the closest to me of any of those characters I did when I was young. I had that sort of rotten before I was ripe cynicism to cover up my fear and vulnerability, I think. I really related to him a lot.

"Mostly people keep coming up with these 'Weekend at Bernie's' 3 ideas," McCarthy said with laughter. "I'm like, 'Dude, he's dead, he's still dead, he's been dead a long time. I have great affection for Bernie."

When does the 'Brat Pack' documentary come out?

Written and directed by McCarthy, the documentary , "Brats" is scheduled for release on the Hulu streaming service on June 12, McCarthy said.

The film will premiere on June 7 at the Tribeca Festival .

The 92-minute documentary follows up the book, "Brat: An 80s Story," authored by McCarthy and released in 2021.

"The 'Brat' book was just my my own sort of exploration of, 'Well, what the hell happened during that time?,'" he said of being thrust into stardom. "It was just a seminal moment in my life, and it was one that I sort of ran from for decades, and I finally just turned around and said, 'Well, what's under that rock?'"

The documentary, however, sought out answers and insights from his fellow "Brat Pack" actors, including Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy.

"And so when I finished that (book), it was quite liberating in a certain way," McCarthy said. "But I felt, 'What in the hell did everyone else think?,' because I know it was life-changing for everybody... We hated that ('Brat Pack') label, and it was very pejorative at the beginning, and that it's come 180 degrees to represent this wonderfully iconic thing in pop culture is kind of a beautiful thing. So I wanted to go see what everyone else's experience was. So I just called up people I hadn't seen in 30 years, and I went to see them and just sort of brought a camera and chatted with them.

"I could call it a homemade movie," he added. "Some of it I shot on my iPhone. It's just very informal. There's lots of moments of sort of nostalgia as it were with clips from films and old interviews and songs and things, but it's also very much a look back from someone looking back at their youth from a period of no longer being young.

"So I was reconnecting with all the old gang as it were, which was fantastic. A big takeaway from that for me was all the affection we had for each other after all these years, where we didn't when we were young. We were young, competitive and scared and trying to start our careers, and it was a very fraught time, where as now, none of it matters anymore."

What do McCarthy's kids think of their movie star dad?

McCarthy said his kids have only seen a few of his films or snippets.

"Those are old ancient history things," he said.

"When they discovered that I did a movie with 'Iron Man' (Robert Downey Jr.) when they were young, they go, 'You worked with 'Iron Man!' They thought that was pretty impressive."

"My son ... when he was like 15, he watched 'Weekend at Bernie's,'" McCarthy recalled with laughter. "And he said, 'Dad, I love you, but that's the stupidest movie I've ever seen,' and I was like, 'That's the point.'"

"And my daughter, one of her classmates said she should watch 'Pretty in Pink.' And she watched the trailer online, and she said, 'I'm not going to watch some movie where you're kissing another woman; I don't want to see that,' so as it should be, I'm just their dad."

Is McCarthy a Swifty?

The actor and writer attended a Taylor Swift concert with his teen daughter, Willow McCarthy. She even surprised him with the gift of an outrageously glitzy sport coat for the event.

"To experience my daughter experiencing it was a beautiful thing for me, and I thought Taylor Swift was terrific," McCarthy said. "I've seen a lot of big shows in big stadiums, and I've never seen anybody be able to hold the crowd in one hand looking live and then at the same time on the Jumbotron being played intimately into the close-up.

"I thought she's able to do that in an extraordinary way. I've seen The Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen. They're just playing to the crowd … or they're mugging for the camera. But (Swift) was able to be intimate with the camera and yet expansive to the crowd at the same time, and I thought it was a real lesson in stardom. I thought it was great. I really enjoyed that."

McCarthy is working on his next book

McCarthy has been on the road working on his next book, which he describes as "a cross-country exploration on male friendship."

He's reuniting with friends in Kentucky, Dallas and San Francisco, people whom he hasn't seen in decades and knows from outside the spotlight of Hollywood.

"There's all sorts of documentation now about this recession in male friendship and all these kind of things," McCarthy said. "And particularly, the older men get the more isolated they become, and so I just found that very interesting … and have been traveling for the last few months sort of gathering that, which has been really interesting."

460 Years Ago, Shakespeare Was Born Here. Or Somewhere.

Every year, millions flock to Stratford-upon-Avon, England, to visit the house known as Shakespeare’s Birthplace. But was he really born there? A whole industry depends on it.

A black-and-white photo of a dilapidated three-story Tudor-style house with a steep shingled roof, a building believed to be Shakespeare’s birthplace, before it was renovated in the late 1800s.

By Elizabeth Winkler

Sometime in the late 18th century, a sign appeared outside a shambly butcher’s hut in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon: “The Immortal Shakspeare was born in this house,” it announced, using a then common spelling of his name. Devotees began making pilgrimages — dropping to their knees, weeping, singing odes: “Untouched and sacred be thy shrine, Avonian Willy, bard Divine!”

A tradesman grew rich selling carvings from a local mulberry tree, like pieces of the true cross. Some skeptics suspected that the sign was part of a scheme to bring visitors to Stratford; others wondered if it had been hung by the property’s occupant. A local antiquarian criticized the whole scene as “a design to extort pecuniary gratuities from the credulous and unwary.”

Pilgrims flocked to the house, and it became a site so hallowed that one visitor warned that the veneration of Shakespeare threatened to eclipse that of God:

Yet steals a sigh, as reason weighs/ The fame to Shakespeare given,/ That thousands, worshippers of him,/ Forget to worship Heaven!

About 250 years after its break from the Catholic Church, England had its own Bethlehem and manger.

The problem: No one really knows where Shakespeare was born.

Mock Tudors and magic wands

Stratford-upon-Avon lies two hours northwest of London in the Midlands, more or less the heart of England. Today, it is one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing up to three million visitors a year. The Birthplace is its main attraction, followed by the cottage reputed to be the place where Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, grew up.

Stratford exudes Elizabethan kitsch, with souvenir shops and half-timbered buildings. In the 19th century, the Victorians tried to make Stratford look more “authentic,” which has left it teeming with mock Tudors.

It’s a town whose economy and identity revolve around Shakespearean fervor, which peaks every year on April 23, the date celebrated as Shakespeare’s birthday. It is also, conveniently, St. George’s Day , honoring the patron saint of England.

On my first visit in June 2021, I passed the Hathaway Tea Rooms and a cafe called the Food of Love, a cutesy name taken from “Twelfth Night” (“If music be the food of love, play on”). Confusingly, there were also several Harry Potter-themed shops. Stratford and Hogwarts, quills and wands, poems and spells . Then again, maybe the conflation was apt: Wasn’t Shakespeare a sort of boy wizard, magically endowed with inexplicable powers?

On Henley Street, I arrived at the Birthplace, a half-timbered house yellowed with age. Today, it looks like a single detached building, but it was originally a row of tenements. John Shakespeare bought one tenement on the street in 1556, though he also bought property on nearby Greenhill Street, which could just as easily have been the site of his son’s birth. He bought the property thought to be the Birthplace in 1575, 11 years after his son was born.

Those who believe in the Birthplace point to a record from 1552 showing that a John Shakespeare was fined for keeping a dung heap somewhere on Henley Street. It doesn’t specify the location, but that dung heap has fueled a theory that he must have been living there at the time of his son’s birth, perhaps as a renter.

Similarly, the claim for the authenticity of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage rests on a record that a John Hathaway leased the 90-acre farm on which the building stood 13 years before Anne was born in about 1556. The cottage may well be linked to the Hathaways, but there is no proof that Anne actually grew up in it, just as there is none that Shakespeare was born in the house on Henley Street.

Together, these traditions have sustained Stratford’s tourist industry, worth about $315 million in 2019, before the pandemic. But they have not convinced many skeptics over the years.

“Stratford permits — indeed encourages — one of the biggest frauds in England to rage unchecked,” the journalist Bernard Levin railed in The Daily Mail in 1965. “I mean those two monumental frauds, ‘Shakespeare’’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.”

It didn’t help that hucksters have found ways to make the story profitable. In the early 19th century, a tenant of the Birthplace named Mrs. Hornby ran a lucrative hustle showing and selling Shakespeare’s “relics” to gullible visitors. The relics were eventually exposed in an 1848 article in Bentley’s Miscellany , which observed that four different chairs, each purporting to be “Shakespeare’s chair,” had been sold over the years, each made by a well-known local craftsman.

I entered through the Shakespeare Centre, a strange museum that acts as an antechamber to the Birthplace. There were no books owned by Shakespeare or letters in Shakespeare’s hand, because none are known to exist. Instead, a glass case displayed eight Shakespeare busts dating from 1844 to 2000. Another case featured a Shakespeare beer mug (1933), Shakespeare playing cards (1974) and a Shakespeare action figure made in China (2003).

Inside the Birthplace, I went from room to room with the other visitors. Guides regaled us with tales of Shakespeare’s childhood — how he played and ate and dreamed in these rooms. Of course, his childhood is actually a yawning blank: From his baptism in 1564 to his marriage in 1582, there are no records of him. In one room, a table displayed books, quills and ink, indicating a family of learning — but his parents signed documents with a mark, like many illiterate people in Tudor England.

The other visitors murmured to one another in reverent museum whispers and nodded at the guides. I thought of how, in the late 19th century, a Birthplace custodian named Joseph Skipsey resigned his post after a few months, explaining that “not a single one of the many so-called relics on exhibition could be proved to be Shakspere’s” and that “the Birthplace itself is a matter of grave doubt.”

The power of popular faith

Efforts to preserve the property as the official Birthplace began in 1847, when it was put up for sale. In response to fears that P.T. Barnum was going to buy it and make it part of a show, a committee was formed to “save” the house for the nation, and the group began to solicit donations.

Not everyone was convinced. “The extraordinary sensation caused by the purchase of this shabby sausage-shop deserves a prominent place amongst popular delusions,” declared the 1848 Bentley’s Miscellany article . A writer for another British periodical mocked the gullibility of a nation pouring forth funds to buy a “rubbishing mass of lath and plaster in which the Poet was no more born than was the Man in the Moon himself.”

But the belief had already become an article of faith, strengthened by its own repetition. The Birthplace was a better shrine for the very absence of evidence — for the faith it required of its visitors — the publisher Charles Knight wrote at the time. That same year, the committee secured the Birthplace at auction for 3,000 pounds, worth about $323,000 today .

The “shabby sausage-shop” made an uninspiring temple. So the adjoining premises were demolished, walls moved, floorboards replaced, new doorways and staircases created. Its new stewards transformed it into the large, comfortable home of a prosperous Elizabethan family, leaving the cellar as “the only portion which remains as it was,” as the scholar Sidney Lee wrote in 1901. What emerged was less a Tudor dwelling than a Victorian imagination of one.

The committee became the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust , the group that still runs the site, and maintains its authenticity. “We know that, to the best of our current understanding, the building includes the surviving fabric of a property that is traditionally and intimately associated with Shakespeare and his family,” said a spokesman for the trust.

The trust went on to acquire more properties, including Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, a thatched farmhouse where visitors are invited to “relive Shakespeare’s love story.”

A temple to baby Shakespeare

“This is the room where we believe William Shakespeare was born in April 1564,” read a sign in the Birthroom. Next to the bed stood a cradle laid out with blankets and a tiny pillow, encouraging visitors to imagine the baby genius mewling by his parents’ side. For the Victorians, the Birthroom offered the mystical possibility of contact with the poet. Visitors recorded melodramatic accounts of what they felt on entering the room: They burst into tears. They fell down. They kissed the floor. Those desiring a more extended communion spent the night.

Others were unimpressed. “If I were to allude to Stratford, it would not be in connection with the fact that Shakespeare came into the world there,” wrote the novelist Henry James after visiting. “It would be rather to speak of a delightful old house near the Avon which struck me as the ideal home for a Shakespearean scholar.”

But the fantasy is resilient. In a 2023 PBS documentary, “ Making Shakespeare: The First Folio ,” the scholar Michael Dobson, director of the Shakespeare Institute, stood in the Birthplace, gushing over “the very room in which Shakespeare was born.”

I shuffled around the cradle with the other visitors, unsure of what to do. Were we supposed to genuflect? Kiss it? After an appropriate amount of staring, we moved on.

To exit, I had to pass through the gift shop, where any lingering sense of piety dissipated in a tidal wave of consumerism. Visitors were loading up on Shakespeare T-shirts, breakfast teas and tea towels. Shakespeare rubber ducks and windup toys. Shakespeare Christmas ornaments, baby onesies, tote bags and luxury chocolates. Belief is good business.

When I returned to Stratford last February, little had changed since my first visit. The Shakespeare Centre was now showing modern artists’ interpretations of the poet, including a Surrealist painting of a masked figure that suggested the mystery surrounding him. The trinket stands were still hawking their modern versions of those 18th-century mulberry tree carvings. Faith in the traditions is bound up with desire — the need to believe.

Where was “the Immortal Shakspeare” really born? Stories are usually more seductive than the truth.
