Following recent upheaval at Red Bull, Sky F1's Bernie Collins believes the team might have signed Sergio Perez to a new two-year deal for stability.

As the 2024 Formula 1 season resumes with the prospect of a genuine title race to enjoy over the summer months, Sky Sports F1 analyse the major talking points ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

After a couple of races in Europe, F1 briefly crosses the Atlantic Ocean once more before five races in six weeks follow on the continent ahead of the summer break.

With three drivers from different teams having shared victories over the last three races, it's been a long time since an F1 weekend has been so hotly anticipated.

There have also been major developments within the driver market since the Monaco Grand Prix with the 2025 grid starting to take shape, but many questions remain ahead of Thursday's media day in Canada.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve provides the perfect venue, with some of the best and most passionate F1 fans in the world sure to create a brilliant atmosphere on a weekend where the weather appears likely to add to the drama.

Can Ferrari, McLaren maintain Red Bull challenge?

McLaren's Lando Norris beat Max Verstappen in Miami to claim his maiden F1 victory, and then very nearly made it two in a row as the Red Bull driver just about held on for victory in Imola two weeks later.

Ferrari then hit back in Monaco as Charles Leclerc finally triumphed at his home race and ended a near two-year winless streak that had built amid Verstappen's dominance.

Leclerc

Verstappen's lead over Leclerc at the top of the drivers' standings is down to 31 points, and Ferrari have closed to within 24 points of Red Bull at the top of the Constructors' Championship.

Four wins in the first five races appeared to have set Verstappen on a straightforward path to a fourth successive title, but the narrowing of Red Bull's advantage over recent weeks has created real jeopardy for the reigning champions.

While many expect Verstappen to still have the upper hand on some of the more traditional circuits coming up on the calendar, the kerbs and slow corners in Canada are expected to reveal the same weaknesses that saw Red Bull struggle in Monaco.

Leclerc and Vasseur celebrate by jumping into Monaco harbour

McLaren have been extremely consistent since bringing a huge raft of upgrades to Miami and are almost certain to be in the mix, while it remains to be seen whether Ferrari have solved a battery deployment issue that hampered them in Imola but was never likely to harm their chances at relatively slow speeds of Monaco.

Unlike in the principality, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve also possesses long straights and overtaking opportunities that should ensure a hugely entertaining Sunday.

The competitive picture promises to be thrilling in dry conditions, but the weekend could be made even more unpredictable by a forecast currently suggesting rain could fall on all three days of track action.

Will Perez extension further calm Red Bull storm?

Despite having successively delivered two very poor weekends, the solid start Sergio Perez made to the season before that has proven enough to earn him a two-year contract extension at Red Bull.

The deal ends speculation over who will drive alongside Max Verstappen next year and closes off the final available seat in which a driver can reasonably expect to compete for the 2025 drivers' title.

While commercial factors - as with any driver deal - were undoubtedly a consideration in Red Bull re-signing Perez, with the Mexican hugely popular in and beyond the Latin American market, the biggest factor in the decision is surely the happiness of Verstappen.

Sky Sports News' Craig Slater looks into how the news of Sergio Perez securing a two-year contract extension with Red Bull impacts the likes of Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Max Verstappen.

Despite being officially contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028, Verstappen leaving before that date has become a realistic possibility amid unrest at the top of the team, rivals closing in on track, and a looming change of regulations in 2026.

While the relationship between Verstappen and Perez hasn't always been perfect, there has been very minimal friction for a long period of time, and keeping him would appear unlikely to upset the Dutchman or his advisors.

The most realistic alternative was Carlos Sainz, but Red Bull would have risked irking the Verstappen re-forming a pairing that experienced tension when driving together for Toro Rosso in 2015 and 2016.

While keeping Perez ensures Red Bull remain with the weakest driver at any of the top teams, Christian Horner will hope that in doing so he is significantly boosting his chances of keeping the sport's top driver for the foreseeable future.

As for Sainz, with Red Bull off the table, Williams and Sauber appear to be the only realistic 2025 options for the outgoing Ferrari driver.

Hamilton gets new part after cryptic Monaco comments

Hoping to gatecrash the battle for race victories are Mercedes, but barring something very dramatic happening with the weather, Canada is likely coming too soon for such hopes to be realistic.

The new front wing that George Russell used in Monaco will now be on Lewis Hamilton's car too, and Canada will provide a far better measuring stick for the part's impact than Monaco could.

Lewis Hamilton

The use of the part, of which only one was ready in time for Monaco, appeared to factor into some quite strange comments Hamilton made to Sky Sports F1 after Qualifying, when he said that he doesn't anticipate beating Russell over one lap on any occasion for the remainder of the year.

The somewhat cryptic comments, which came with Hamilton 7-1 down to Russell in Qualifying this season, appeared to be the first real signs of tension growing between Hamilton and Mercedes during his final season before joining Ferrari.

Mercedes insisted that Hamilton had not wanted to run the new front wing and was happy for Russell to do so, but the seven-time world champion appears to be suspicious of Russell, who will remain with the team next season, receiving preferential treatment.

Carlos Sainz Jr

With 16 races still to come, Mercedes remain hopeful of bringing upgrades that can enable them to close the gap to Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren, but any feuding within the team could stifle progress.

It will therefore be fascinating to see how Hamilton chooses to handle the situation when he is inevitably asked about his comments at some point on Thursday.

How will Ocon cope with Alpine exit?

The other big development in the driver market to have happened since Monaco was confirmation from Alpine that Esteban Ocon will leave the team at the end of the season.

The parting, presented as a mutual decision, follows Ocon crashing into team-mate Pierre Gasly on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, after which team boss Bruno Famin promised there would be "consequences".

A look back on all the times Alpine driver Esteban Ocon was involved in a collision with his team-mate.

Ocon retired as a result of the collision but was given a five-place grid penalty that he will serve in Canada, leaving him with little hope of scoring points.

It is therefore unsurprising that Alpine have chosen to use this weekend to allow reserve driver Jack Doohan to fulfil one of the team's two obligated young driver practice sessions for the season.

While Ocon has apologised for causing the Monaco incident, the fact that he is now confirmed to be leaving at the end of the season is unlikely to totally diffuse the tension between him and Gasly.

Esteban Ocon

Ocon's departure wasn't the only news to emerge in what has been a catastrophic campaign for the Enstone squad, with veteran operations director Rob White becoming the latest senior figure at the team to be sacked.

Famin remains faced with a huge task to turn things around at Alpine, but merely keeping the peace for the rest of 2024 could prove challenging.

Canadian GP track breakdown: F1’s Groundhog Day at Montreal’s ‘semi-street circuit’

Formula One is returning to a waterfront(ish) race, this time in Quebec for the Canadian Grand Prix .

Montreal is the largest city in the Canadian province and known for its famous food culture, a triple-peaked hill called Mt. Royal (located in the heart of the city) and a race circuit that boasts a rich history as one of the most popular stops on the F1 calendar. Just east of the bustling International District, in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, sits the manmade Île Notre-Dame, home of Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

The track is best characterized as a “semi-street circuit,” as Fernando Alonso said last year. With few run-off areas, drivers have to get close to the wall and nail riding the curbs to put together a competitive lap. And there are a few unknowns at this circuit, like the threat of rain and the groundhogs that pop up every once in a while and run onto the track.

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is also known for its iconic hairpin (look out for the overtaking opportunities!), the legendary “Wall of Champions,” and as the host for Lance Stroll’s home race. And just beyond the track limits, team members used to compete in the F1 Raft Race in the river.

As F1 prepares for the standalone race ahead of the European summer stretch, here’s what you need to know about Montreal’s bumpy track with a leafy setting.

The history of the Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian GP has been part of the F1 calendar since 1967 (though has missed a few years), but it hasn’t always been held in Montreal.

The GP alternated between Ontario’s Mosport Park and Quebec’s Circuit Mont-Tremblant until 1971, when F1 dropped the latter over safety concerns: It was a rather bumpy circuit and harsh winters damaged the track surface. But Mosport Park had its own issues.

In 1977, Ian Ashley flipped over the guardrails after cresting a bump, hitting a television tower. Later that same weekend, Jochen Mass nearly flattened a guardrail upon impact. The FIA eventually decided that the track was unsuitable. The Toronto city council ended up rejecting the proposal to move the grand prix to its Exhibition Place, and the race subsequently moved to Montreal.

A tribute to a Canadian star

The manmade Île Notre-Dame was built for the 1967 Expo 67 World’s Fair, and once the 1976 Summer Olympics left Montreal, a race circuit was created out of the roads. It was fittingly named Île Notre-Dame Circuit and hosted its first F1 race in 1978. And it was renamed four years later after a Canadian motorsport hero.

Gilles Villeneuve won the first Canadian Grand Prix held in Montreal for Ferrari, his first F1 victory. During that time, he was competing against the likes of Niki Lauda and Mario Andretti, both well-known motorsport names to this date. Four years later, Villeneuve died following a collision during the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying session, when he was launched out of the cockpit and fractured his neck. He later died in the hospital, and the Canadian track was renamed in his honor.

What the drivers are watching

Similar to Albert Park in Melbourne, Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s surroundings feature a mix of trees and public roads. The layout hasn’t been changed since 2002, and is characterized by fast, long straights split with lower-speed corners and chicanes, creating a stop-and-start feeling for the drivers. Keep an eye on Turns 9 and 14 in particular to see how the drivers navigate the curbs. Lewis Hamilton said in 2023, “You’ve got these long, long straights, but it’s a bit like a go-kart track in how you have to throw the car over the curbs.”

To prioritize top speed, the cars typically run low downforce setups; however, this means the tires tend to slide more heading into the corners. Drivers can seize overtaking opportunities in these moments, like at the hairpin at Turn 10.

As the lap comes to a close, drivers zip past the track’s most famous feature: the ‘Wall of Champions.’ It’s been the site of numerous infamous crashes, like those of Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve during the 1999 race. What makes this section tricky is the drivers are braking from their highest speeds after barreling down the straight, and it’s a bumpy portion.

The Canadian track presents various unpredictable factors, weather being one of them. The temperatures fluctuate, and rain is a threat on and off throughout the race weekend this year. And there’s also the groundhogs to take into account.

“It could be a very boring race, maybe you’re outside of the points, and then someone hits one of these, and they’re out, new front wing,” Zhou Guanyu said in 2023. “Definitely keep my eye on that.”

Tsunoda, not ricciardo, secure in f1 for 2025.

Jun.7 (GMM) Yuki Tsunoda can breathe a sigh of relief, because his future in Formula 1 looks more than secure for now.

Red Bull Racing confirmed this week that Sergio Perez is staying put not only in 2025 but also 2026 – locking up the energy drink company’s top F1 team to other drivers.

“We want to ensure continuity and both drivers get on really well, there are simply no conflicts,” Red Bull F1 consultant Dr Helmut Marko told Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

“Checo is also incredibly popular in Latin America. We sell more merchandise of his there than that of (Max) Verstappen, and when he’s on his game, he’s almost unbeatable.”

And at the junior squad RB, Japanese Tsunoda has also secured his place.

“Yuki Tsunoda is set, that’s clear,” Red Bull F1 consultant Dr Helmut Marko told Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

However, the on-form Tsunoda clarified in Canada that is actually yet to sign a contract – even though Red Bull seems to have an overriding long-term deal with the 24-year-old.

“I also had some options with other teams,” he admits. “But I am already very committed to Red Bull and hopefully I can get a little more commitment from them too.”

It is believed Tsunoda would like a clause written into his new deal freeing him up for a future team switch if a cockpit doesn’t open up at Red Bull Racing.

“Perez still has to perform in the next two years,” he said. “Anything can happen in these kinds of circumstances. I just have to keep growing and make sure that at some point Red Bull can no longer ignore me.”

As for the other seat at RB, that now seems to be a direct tussle between the incumbent, Daniel Ricciardo, and Liam Lawson, whose contract already enables him to sign elsewhere if Red Bull cannot offer him a 2025 race seat.

“He (Lawson) is there at every race and we are in close contact,” Marko said. “There is a clause with Lawson that if we don’t offer him a seat, he is free for other teams.”

Ricciardo freely admits that he didn’t impress Red Bull enough to secure his coveted spot at the top team.

“You have to be realistic,” said the Australian. “I simply didn’t deliver enough. If you want one of the top cockpits, you have to show exceptional performance.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

gp tours f1

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

gp tours f1

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

gp tours f1

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

gp tours f1

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

gp tours f1

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

gp tours f1

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

gp tours f1

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Miami F1 Track Guide

Miami Circuit Map & Guide

A brand-new track for the 2022 season, the Miami circuit wraps around the famous Hard Rock Stadium – home of the Miami Dolphins NFL football team. Purpose-built for Formula One, the Miami circuit has a fast street-circuit feel to it and was won by Max Verstappen from Charles Leclerc in the inaugural race. With a tropical, sunny climate and a party-like atmosphere, expect this race to increase in popularity in coming years.

While each of our Miami Grand Prix Packages comes with a pre-defined grandstand ticket, we’ve created this Miami F1 Track guide to help you choose an alternative.

Grandstand: START/FINISH

Aptly named, the start/finish Grandstand is where you want to be if you are looking to be at the centre of the action for the weekend. Here you will have views of the starting grid and pitlane, as well as the post-race podium celebrations. Directly across from the stand is the famous Hard Rock Stadium, which is easily accessed by the nearby bridge at the final corner (turn 19). There are plenty of food and drink options available directly behind the grandstand. The top rows of the Start/Finish grandstand are also covered, and there are plenty of giant screens visible.

Grandstand: TURN 1

Located on the outside of Turn 1, this grandstand puts you in a prime viewing position to catch all the action that the opening corner provides. At the end of a DRS zone, wheel-to-wheel racing is a high likelihood. The Turn 1 Grandstand also gives you a view of the pit exit. As with the start/finish grandstand, the upper rows are covered from the warm Miami sun and food, drink, toilet and merchandise options are all conveniently located close by.

Grandstand: MARINA

The Marina Grandstands are on the twisty Turns 6 and 7, and are sat a little further back from the track itself. While you won’t see the cars at full speed here, you can appreciate the aerodynamic efficiency of a Formula One car as they navigate this still-quick section of track. Atmosphere-wise, these seats are located next to all the entertainment options on the circuit, with the yacht club directly opposite and accessed via a bridge. The McLaren and Aston Martin team fan clubs are also at the Marina Grandstands, and the Miami city itself is most easily accessed from this stand also.

Grandstand: THE BEACH SOUTH

Whether you want to be sat on the infield or outside the track will define which of the Beach Grandstands you choose, with Beach South sitting on the outside of Turn 11 and a smaller stand than Beach North. At the end of a long straight and DRS zone, Turns 11 and 12 provide an overtaking opportunity, which you will be able to witness from Beach South.

Grandstand: THE BEACH NORTH

Directly opposite Beach South is the Beach North stand, which is on the inside of Turn 12. The first edition of the Miami GP had a lively atmosphere, most notably on the infield section of the track, so if a party atmosphere all weekend long is what you are seeking, Beach North is a very good choice. The Red Bull Energy Station is located just next to the Beach North, and from an on-track perspective, overtaking is always a chance between Turns 11-13.

Grandstand: TURN 18

Located at the penultimate corner, Turn 18 Grandstand gives you excellent views of the final section of track, as well as pit-entry. Seats higher in this stand will give you views of the back straight prior to the approach to this corner, which will be another popular overtaking spot during the race. Behind grandstand are plenty of food and drink options, which is one of the strengths of the Miami circuit. The Mercedes and Ferrari fan clubs are found at the Turn 18 Grandstand, and you are a short walk from the main fanzone.

TIMETABLE FOR THE MIAMI GRAND PRIX WEEKEND

Grand Prix schedules are normally released in the weeks leading up to the event. While schedules do change year on year, the schedule from 2022 (below) should give a good indication of what to expect and when.
