Europa 2 cruise ship review

By Becky Fantham | 13 Apr 2015

Becky Wiggins is suitably impressed as she reviews Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Europa 2, widely regarded as one of the most sumptuous cruise ships in the world

Europa II’s luxurious sun deck.

We’re on the bridge listening to the captain talk about stabilisers, when one of the crew suddenly points towards the sea. My German is sketchy but I soon see what all the fuss is about: a pod of dolphins has appeared at the bow of the ship. They whirl and pirouette, leaping high above the waves – first singly, then in pairs – flashes of pale flank catching the sun. The captain, his thunder well and truly stolen by this dazzling display, shrugs and says “of course, we arranged this just for you”. It’s a perfect moment, and there are plenty more of these to come during our cruise on board Europa 2 as we sail from Lisbon , along the west coast of Morocco to Casablanca and Agadir, then around the Canary Islands .

Europa 2 is often described as one of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships , with more space per passenger than any other. High ceilings, bright, elegant areas and a view of the sea from everywhere on the ship (yes, even the lifts) means there’s certainly a sense of indulgence. The decor is modern, with strong use of colour throughout (the Jazz Club is purple with a bright pink neon ceiling) and original art featuring heavily, with nearly 900 paintings, photographs and sculptures including a beautiful Damien Hirst butterfly located in one of the 88 sq m Grande Penthouse Suites (price strictly upon application, and no, they wouldn’t give me a hint). Fixtures are high end: Murano glass chandeliers handmade in Italy, marble floors and Villeroy & Boch bathrooms.

The ship may be modern but the service is traditional, discreet but friendly. The majority of passengers on board are German, but every staff member speaks English and shows in the theatre are non-speaking, to appeal to all nationalities. Service in restaurants is white-gloved and unobtrusive with attention to detail akin to a Michelin-starred restaurant. Asking for a cheese plate after one meal in the French restaurant, Tarragon , we were presented with a selection so beautifully crafted, it seemed a shame to eat it.

The buzz words on board are ‘relaxed luxury’ and nowhere is this better reflected than in the 251 suites, all with large balconies. Even the entry level veranda suites have 28 sq m of floor space, plus another seven on the balcony. My Grand Ocean Suite is about as big as my first flat, and luxuriously appointed in blonde wood, muted violet and gold with thick, sculpted carpets and touches of pale leather. The bedroom area is separated from the lounge by an open wooden slatted partition and the bathroom, complete with touch screen steam room, shower and whirlpool bath, has a glass wall – meaning you can see all the way out to sea even while enjoying a bubbly bath (yes, I tested that too). There’s a huge cupboard with pull-out shelves containing china, cutlery and other essentials, plus a Nespresso machine with an assortment of coffee choices. The mini fridge is more of a maxi fridge, with an abundance of beer, soft drinks and water, all complimentary and restocked twice a day. There are so many soft-close drawers and shelves that my clothes take up barely two of them. There’s also a desk with tablet computer, a huge flat screen TV (another one magically appears in your bathroom mirror) and a corner sofa with coffee table. The wardrobes (three doubles) have full-length hanging space, long enough for ball gowns, not that you’d need one. Europa 2 has done away with formal nights and there’s no dressing up for dinner either.

My butler talks me through the lighting options – there are four pre-set moods plus you can go ‘off piste’ and create your own (this is slightly complicated and I do find myself alternately bumbling about in the dark or suddenly dazzled with bright light at various times during my stay). He also shows me how to work everything in the bathroom and how to turn the TV into a giant computer using the wireless keyboard. Exhausted after all this mental exertion I’m glad of the complimentary Champagne provided on arrival.

A Grand Ocean Suite on Europa 2.

Despite the luxurious surroundings, I find that bar prices are not at all expensive. Each guest on a seven-night cruise receives €150 onboard drinks credit, increasing to €200 for longer stays. Cocktails are around €5 and a bottle of beer €3.30. Plus, there are several party nights with live entertainment and a free bar all evening.

You won’t pay for any food on board either, so whether you’re dining in one of the four speciality restaurants, taking afternoon tea in the Belvedere lounge café (the chocolate and coffee gateaux are divine), having afternoon waffles by the pool, or just fancy a sandwich in your room, it’s all complimentary. My one gripe is that smoking is allowed in several areas of the ship, including balconies. Tea and cake al fresco becomes so much less appealing when your neighbour is puffing cigar smoke in your direction.

In all the restaurants, the emphasis is on quality ingredients, beautifully presented. The Yacht Club on deck nine features a huge buffet at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast is particularly impressive, with hams carved from the bone and an endless selection of fruit, cereal, breads, pastries and hot breakfasts made to order. If you prefer table service, the ship’s largest restaurant, Weltmeere , features beautifully set tables and enormous pink Murano glass lights that dominate the circular room like huge, spiky tentacles. Dinner dress is casual (jacket but no tie) in all the restaurants and diners are encouraged to choose whatever they like from the menu that, like most on board, isn’t traditionally laid out in starters, main courses and desserts but into lighter dishes, soups, maybe pasta, and meat and fish courses.

Dining al fresco on board Europa 2.

We start with a tiny, delicate sliver of smoked salmon and move on to paper thin lamb carpaccio on a delicious ratatouille base, a sorbet course served with Champagne, and then a perfectly cooked entrecôte with foie gras . Each course is just a few mouthfuls but the attention to detail is superb. Desserts are delectable and I could happily have licked several plates. The wine list is impressive and the ship’s cellars hold in excess of 7,500 bottles of red, 6,000 bottles of white and 2,000 bottles of Champagne – even more on Christmas cruises. Wine tastings with the sommelier can be arranged at an extra cost. As well as Weltmeere and Tarragon, guests can choose to dine in Serenissima , an elegant Italian restaurant, or Asian-inspired Elements. There’s also Sakura , a sushi and fish restaurant. You can reserve for the evening, and there are plenty of tables for two, removing the need for enforced dining with your fellow guests if you’re travelling as a couple and not feeling sociable.

As you would expect, in-suite information is beautifully presented, and a thick card Programme of the Day arrives every evening showing port information, excursions, a schedule of activities and special offers around the ship. So if you fancy some pampering, you can visit the beautiful Ocean Spa for a sauna (naked – this is a German ship), or book one of many treatments available featuring Thalgo and Dermalogica products. Sporty? There’s a state-of-the-art fitness studio featuring yoga and Spinning, or if golf’s your game, a specialist golf simulator with the resident PGA pro (lessons and swing analysis are available at an extra charge). I seem to have forgotten my trainers so I plump for a free gin tasting in the Herrenzimmer (literally ‘gentlemen’s room’, but it seems I’m allowed in) which is incredibly informative and tremendous fun too. I leave with a spring in my step (or possibly a slight wobble) and a list of new gins to try.

The Atrium on board Europa II.

Cruise Director Christian Bertram tells me that Europa 2 is attracting more and more families, and family suites with interconnecting doors are available. Children aged two to three are entertained in sessions throughout the day in the Knopf Club , including a sleep session from 6.30pm to 10pm if you wish to dine alone. Staff also offer an inspired ‘lie in’ service, collecting children from your suite and taking them to breakfast so you can go back to bed. There’s the Kids’ Club for four to 10-year-olds including fashion shows, craft sessions and even excursions, plus a Teen Club open in sessions between 9am and 9pm with 3D films , parties and fully supervised excursions. The ship has several small Zodiac rib craft on board for whisking guests around straight off the ship.

The swimming pool and terraces on board Europa II.

Europa 2 also boasts a fully fitted cookery school where we take part in a sushi and sashimi course (€80 charge applies). The chefs are endlessly patient and good-humoured as we learn how to make teriyaki sauce and fiddle with sticky rice (it gets everywhere – when I change later I find grains stuck to my chest) and get to grips with California rolls and sheets of seaweed. At the end of the lesson we sit down at a beautifully laid table and dine on our own creations with a perfectly matched, crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The classes are in German or English and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon on a sea day.

On port days there are plenty of options. The ship arranges port shuttles or has its own city bikes that can be rented, and also provides guided bike tours. A large range of port adventures are available, or ship’s staff can tailor excursions around your personal preferences, and again I was surprised at the reasonable prices. We join a tour of Casablanca (around €40), coincidentally on Moroccan Independence Day. From the admittedly unattractive port, the tour takes us around the Royal Palace esplanade and to a bustling market in the Quartier des Habous where we face a sensory onslaught, dazzled by piles of brightly coloured Moroccan slippers and glittering displays of silver tea pots, and slightly overwhelmed in the highly aromatic olive market.

Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca. Image credit: iStock.

The highlight of the tour, however, is a visit to the Hassan II Mosque . With its minaret dominating the skyline (it’s the world’s tallest, soaring 200m over the city), it took thousands of artisans over six years to complete the fabulous sea green and cobalt mosaics and awe-inspiring 1,100-tonne carved cedar ceiling that opens to allow light to flood in. The mosque, which can accommodate 25,000 worshippers, opens between prayer sessions and guided tours are available (shoes must be removed and shoulders and knees covered). We finish our trip with a visit to Rick’s Café , where we meet owner Kathy Kriger, adorned in a Kaftan, who talks us through the incredible story of how, inspired by the film, she left her job as US commercial attaché and set about lovingly recreating Rick’s in Casablanca.

Back at the ship, we’re welcomed with a smile, cold towels and a drink, and as Europa 2 slips out of port headed for Agadir into a setting sun, I sip a glass of Champagne and reflect upon that ‘most luxurious cruise ship in the world’ label. It seems pretty perfect to me. In fact, I’m starting to think that maybe those dolphins weren’t a coincidence after all.

Europa 2: Generation LuXe

Generation luxe, europa 2 caters to upscale cruisers seeking international flavor..

By Lori Rackl

The bad news for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is that its luxury vessel, Europa , no longer ranks as the Berlitz cruise guide’s top-rated ship.

The good news for the German cruise line: The coveted title was stolen by Europa ’s little sister.

In fact, the 516-passenger Europa 2 landed the highest score ever in the 29-year history of the Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships , which is considered a leading authority on the cruise industry.

Christened last year in Hamburg, the $360 million Europa 2 is helping redefine high-end cruising with a modern twist. It’s done away with formal nights, regimented dinner seating times, and other stuffy traditions. But it’s hung on to some of the old favorites — impeccable service, sophisticated entertainment, and caviar. The ship also added more flexibility, 21 st -century design, and shorter itineraries that square nicely with tight vacation schedules.

Europa 2 hits that sweet spot of relaxed luxury, catering to a younger clientele than its esteemed predecessor and appealing to a new generation of affluent cruisers whose tastes skew more contemporary than classic.

Like Europa and other top-shelf ships from the likes of Seabourn and Crystal Cruises, Europa 2 is designed with deep-pocketed passengers in mind. But don’t let the German address of Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters fool you. Those deep pockets don’t have to hold European passports.

In fact, the cruise line is making a concerted push to attract North Americans and Brits looking for the same level of uber-luxe water travel as their well-heeled German counterparts. Think of Europa 2 as Hapag-Lloyd’s Manolo Blahnik stiletto trying to get a foothold in the English-speaking market.

The ship is the fleet’s first fully bilingual vessel. All onboard announcements, menus, and other printed materials come in both English and German. Dining options — and there are many — range far beyond wiener schnitzel and sauerkraut.

While there aren’t as many shore excursions offered in English as German, they are available. And because there are far fewer passengers to book them, they often end up feeling more like a private tour than a typical group expedition.

I rarely had reason to break out my rusty high-school German during a 7-night Mediterranean voyage last summer aboard Europa 2 . The late June journey started in the colorful Spanish city of Barcelona followed by a welcome day at sea. This gave my husband and me ample time to poke around the ship’s myriad entertainment venues, watering holes, spa, and fitness center. It also allowed us to plot a dining strategy that would ensure we’d hit all eight — eight! — of Europa 2 ’s restaurants at least once.

Our well-paced itinerary continued on to the windswept shores of Corsica, where islanders were preparing to welcome the Tour de France. Then it was off to a postcard rack’s worth of idyllic spots dotting the French and Italian rivieras before ending in high style in Monte Carlo.

The ship’s 251 suites — all with generously sized private balconies — are sleek and light, dominated by clean lines that are a hallmark of modern European décor. More elegant than trendy, each is tricked out with Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, Nespresso machine, and minibar stocked with complimentary beer and soft drinks. (Hapag-Lloyd has yet to follow the lead of other luxury cruise lines that have embraced the all-inclusive model for alcohol. Guests pay extra for wine and spirits.)

Suites come in seven categories, including family apartments connected by a door and veranda. Children under 12 sail for free; ages 12 to 15 pay a $60 supplement per night. At 301 square feet, even the smallest suite is twice as spacious as many standard cabins. The largest measures a sprawling 1,066 square feet.

With a bigger footprint than Europa , the newer ship boasts one of the largest space-to-guest ratios in the industry. And while Europa 2 feels plenty commodious on board, it’s small enough to dock at tinier ports such as tony Portofino, where we were the sole cruise ship docked among a smattering of one-percenters’ yachts.

With a crew numbering 370, Europa 2 ’s bragging rights also include a sky-high staff-to-passenger ratio, which explains the many attendants roaming around, passing out chilled bowls of sorbet to sunbathers by the pool. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, a retractable glass roof covers the long swimming hole.

Every crewmember we met, from sorbet slingers to housekeepers, massage therapists to the waiter whipping up steak tartare tableside, not only spoke English but seemed genuinely eager to do so.

The same could be said for most of our fellow passengers. While Europeans generally are more reserved than Americans, many were happy to exercise their English and engage in some small talk with us Yanks. More importantly, they added a level of authenticity to the cruise. Personally, I like being around Europeans when traveling in Europe.

The ship’s international hostess checked in with us at least once a day to make sure all was wunderbar . And when we were the only native English speakers who turned up for a Mediterranean wine tasting, the German sommelier obliged by waxing on about vintages and flavor profiles in both languages. The Turkish-born chef who taught us how to poach foie gras and bake brioche in the ship’s intimate culinary school did so in flawless English, which brings me to the next topic: food.

One of the most striking features about Europa 2 — and one that speaks to a clientele less beholden to old-school cruising — is the impressive array of dining options. French. Asian. Italian. Classic. Casual. The only thing they have in common is the high caliber of cuisine.

We showed up at the sushi restaurant for dinner after spending the day pedaling the ship’s free-to-rent bicycles around Pisa and Lucca. Too tired to pore over the menu, we asked the waiter and chef to surprise us. That they did, delivering the freshest sashimi, tastiest maki, and crispiest tempura I’ve had outside of Tokyo.

Europa 2 ’s eateries, which do not carry surcharges, have no set meal times or fixed seating plans. It’s largely up to you when and where you dine. It’s still a good idea to reserve a specific night at the most popular venues: the French brasserie (my favorite) and the Italian Restaurant Serenissima.

Europa 2 ’s sophomore sailing season includes maiden calls to the Caribbean and South America, as well as a visit to New York City and Miami before returning to Europe in spring 2015. That’s ample time to become fluent in all the German you need to know: Sprechen Sie Englisch ?

Cruise Ship Review: Europa 2

MS Europa 2

“You are the chosen one,” said Ulf Wolter, the fair-haired captain, of Europa 2 cruise ship. He was pointing at me. “Return here to the bridge at 6pm tomorrow night just before we set sail and I’ll show you what to do”.

That was an enticing offer, especially on a ship as stylish as Hapag-Lloyd Cruises ‘ newest offering. Having a tour of the bridge is one thing, every passenger can have one, but pressing the captain’s klaxon is quite another. In the meantime though, I had a medium-sized luxury ship to explore.

This was a four-night cruise, sailing from Lisbon to Lanzarote, calling at Morocco’s Casablanca and Agadir with a day at sea. It was hardly any time at all, but enough to sometimes forget that I was on a liner. The bright décor, open spaces and easy decorum reminded me of times I had spent in luxury five star hotels.

This ship, probably the most expensive liner around, is not the largest – at most it will carry 500 passengers – but it offers a huge amount of space. Their motto is “luxury is being able to waste space” and the space often show-cases works of art and paintings by acclaimed artists such Damien Hirst and Hockney.

And there’s no need for room envy on this all-suite, all-balcony liner. There are eight grades and even the smallest room is a hefty 28m 2 /301ft 2 (the size of a studio flat). There’s plenty of room for a huge double bed, lots of wardrobe space, a living area with a sofa, as well as a desk and tablet, flat panel TV and a mirror TV in the bathroom.

Mine was the spa room defined by a whirlpool and Jacuzzi and its own sauna-cum-shower in the ensuite. The largest suites are a humungous 100m 2 /1066ft 2 (as much space as a small house) with spa bathrooms that are larger than some double bedrooms – these are so luxurious they won’t give out the price to idle enquirers.

Though drinks are not included in the fare, there is a Nespresso machine and a free mini bar with various spirits, beers and soft drinks. Oh, and a welcome pack comprising fruit and bottle of Champagne.

Feeling as effervescent as the bubbly nectar I was now liberating into a flute, I took time to savour the moment on my veranda on the first night as we set sail from Lisbon. I soon settled on the cushioned sunbed, sipping and watching the twinkling city lights until they finally popped out of view.

MS Europa 2 Daybed

In communal areas floor-ceiling windows let in lashing of light on all floors, with glass lifts to maintain the flow of light. The wide open reception area is particularly attractive decked in bright white, with comfy seating, and a small bar with a piano whose melodic tinkerings were good to hear even when just passing through.

The ship has a gym and spa, of course, and a pool surrounded by wooden decks where slumber comes easy on oversized sunbeds. From there stairs lead to the 10 th floor and to a communal Jacuzzi – the centre point of a most peaceful segment of the ship.

MS Europa 2 Pooldeck

MS Europa 2 Pooldeck (c) Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

That’s where I spent one morning when everyone else had disembarked to visit Agadir (I had been before). I sat there relaxing in the bubbling water warmed the midday sun, so serene and all I wanted to do was sleep off the lethargy in one of the cushioned pods dotted around the deck.

This is a German ship, with unfamiliar sounds of German conversations in the ether. In social areas, such as taking tea at the Belvedere, drinks and nibbles at the Sansibar (a partly alfresco bar on deck 8) or cocktail parties around the pool I found myself, sometimes comically, engaging other cruisers with smiles and body language.

At night, entertainment comprised acrobatics, dance and music, but if the entertainment was a show with a lot of chatter, I was better off tapping toes at the Jazz Club with my favourite tipple.

MS Europa 2 Theater

MS Europa 2 Theater (c) Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Though I don’t sprechen Deutsch , it wasn’t a problem service-wise. Staff are multi-lingual and this is important because this year Hapag Lloyd Cruises want to reach out to the English speaking world.

Lunchtime, for me, was best enjoyed at the Yacht Club where a waitress/buffet combo and alfresco tables on the terrace appealed.

MS Europa 2 Terasse Yachtclub

MS Europa 2 Terasse Yachtclub (c) Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

For non-meat eaters there’s Weltmeere with its large vegetarian options and Sakura sushi restaurant which I liked so much that I joined the sushi making class on sea day. Though what I ended up with looked nothing like what I had been served at Sakura, it was a fun and a brilliant way to encourage camaraderie with other cruisers.

There are other ways to spend time, including a large screen golf simulator, lectures, wine and whiskey tastings and yoga lessons.

It’s good form to dress for dinner, and that fateful night, I’d made a special effort and headed for the bridge for my special pre-dinner role.

“You are just in time” acknowledged the captain. “You will be pressing the horn three times at five second intervals. Don’t worry, I will signal you in”.

It was simple enough, intensely satisfying and though it was all over quickly it was meaningful. After-all, I was signalling the departure from one port and beckoning in a whole new adventure, starting with a pre-dinner cocktail and ending with a day in Casablanca the next day.
