QBE Australia's comment on Travel Policy

As with many other insurers, QBE Australia's travel insurance policy is subject to terms and conditions and mental illness is listed as an exclusion under the Policy.

We understand the concerns being expressed over mental health illness and empathise with all Australians who suffer from mental health illnesses.

It's important to note that we do provide travel insurance to those suffering from a mental health illness, providing them with cover for those incidents travel insurance primarily exists to provide protection against, such as lost luggage, theft, accident resulting in injury and cancelled/missed flights.

Insurance relies on the insurer making an assessment of risk.

With a significant number of Australians suffering from mental health illnesses to some degree in any given year, to provide travel insurance cover for mental health illness would significantly increase the cost of travel insurance premiums for the whole community, not just those suffering from a mental illness, due to increased claims costs.

QBE sought an injunction in relation to this case, as we wanted to ensure a fair hearing for both parties. We confirmed to media we are very happy to comment after the hearing.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Spent 3 miserable months, accumulating information for QBE, who constantly required more and more unnecessary documentation on my claim. A tactic used to hopefully persuade me to give up and forget the claim. I persisted and was at one stage advised the claim would be allowed and I'd be repaid the $500 I wast claiming on pre paid accommodation due to a lengthy plane delay. The same day they wrote to say they'd changed their minds and requested yet again more info. I got that and sent it on again! Finally some flimsy excuse and no claim accepted. Travel insurance with them is a total waste of money.

I was really disappointed with the handling of my travel insurance claim. The lack of transparency and informed financial consent is astounding. In healthcare, informed consent from patients is critical and I don't understand why the insurance companies get away with it time and time again. My luggage was lost on the way to my holiday and my insurance policy had an allowance for replacing essential items. I called them personally to understand the process, read the policy on lost and delayed baggage and agreed to the 300 dollar excess. On return and submitting my claim, they tell me I have to send back all items purchased plus pay the 300 dollar excess. I don't understand where the value for me was in this process? It just ended up costing me more money - had they given me accurate information I would have chosen a different path. The customer service is very obstructive - no empathy or understanding. When choosing your travel insurance, I would strongly advise a different company - I know some of them have structures that offer you a daily allowance for lost or stolen luggage and they certainly don't make you send back your old and used items in the end!

Do NOT use QBE for travel insurance - You are unlikely to make a successful claim

My dad was about to go visit his family but unfortunately, my mum's health deteriorated so he had to cancel his trip. She unfortunately also passed away not long after. This was all very sudden, and my mum although was diagnosed with cancer (this was over 7 years ago) has been really well with no symptoms, hence my dad was going to go on the short trip (this was by himself). When my dad tried to claim it, due to the sudden deterioration of my mum's health, QBE made him go through so many hoops even though he had to cope with the grief. He initially got a letter from the specialist, but this was not enough, he had to get a dr to fill in a "form". Then apparently the "form" was not the "current" one, so he had to go back to the dr to fill in an almost identical form. This was then rejected again as "not enough information". It was not until the fourth time, that we got a response, and it was to reject the claim and it was because my mum was 'diagnosed' before the policy was taken out. Something I don't understand, because the policy was for my dad and not my mum. My dad can't even make a claim because he had to cancel a trip because a loved one was unwell? The process took almost six months as well. My dad made the claim before my mum passed away as she was in hospital, and we did not get the response 3 months after she passed away.

I had top tier QBE travel insurance. My phone was stolen in Cuba. I assembled all the correct documentation, including a Cuban police report. QBE required that I provide a receipt for the phone, beyond just the monthly bill. I wasted time going to the original store I bought it from to get this. The phone cost $1,176. After all this, QBE offered to return $450. The cheapest Australian retailer I could find publishing a current price for the model of phone was Big W at $800.When I contested QBE's quote of $450, they directed me to a interstate 'retailer' with no street address (just a PO Box), no online store and no published price. The business was registered to a residential address. I contacted QBE three times contesting the $450 remittance. They just kept providing details for the Melbourne retailer. The $450 quote is cheaper than Hong Kong eBay resellers, who offer no Australian warranty. I had zero interest in dealing with an interstate group sourcing an international phone with no local warranty support, so now I am significantly out of pocket on my replacement phone.

Warning to all Americans and visitors to Australia. QBE travel insurance for Qantas is a farce. They do not even deserve a one star! I was unable to take a trip due to my mom being in the ICU. I am traveling from abroad and obviously my mom is not from Australia or NZ. So why even try to sell travel insurance to me ? Thieves! They just want to make a buck off of you!

Don’t expect your claim process to be as quick and easy as purchasing your policy! We missed an international connection because our 1st flight was cancelled. We had to pay out of pocket almost $2,000 to replace the flight we missed. QBE have an exclusion clause in their fine print “the cancellation or delay of travel arrangements due to mechanical breakdown of transportation or failure of the carrier to operate this service”. Our Qantas flight was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Also, they state that claims are processed within 3-10 working days. Our claim was submitted on 24/7/18 and only finalised today, 17/8/18, after numerous phone calls. Do your homework! This is the only company I know of with this exclusion. Our daughters claim on her online travel insurance company for the same events, was paid out promptly with no questions asked.

I recently traveled to Europe and after missing a connection had to spend the day in the Frankfurt Germany airport and as a result had to buy an entire new airline ticket. I had travel delay insurance with QBE however after delaying my claim for six months it was denied with QBE stating that the delay was due to my air carrier going bankrupt. The airline did stop operations but not for six Months after I had returned. You have been warned. Avoid this company like the plague.

QBE Travel Insurance

Above average insurance for the average family..

Easy to organise. Straightforward language.

QBE Home Cover - Contents

I don't have any problems with my insurer.

Very poor customer service - never again

I'm glad I didn't need to claim because I had to hassle several times before leaving just to get the insurance certificate. I had already paid of course so couldn't get out, but I was left unimpressed and hoping I didn't need to make a claim.

Easy to deal with.

I did have a medical claim. The matter was completely resolved to my satisfaction.

Competitive pricing and discounts

The best. So fast, so simple and so much stress free!

Good service, constant contact

I found their service when I contacted them about a change in flights Excellent.

Low premiums, great benefits, easy to access

Easy to access benefits. Cheap premiums for maximum cover. The best range of benefits I found on the market for travellers. Reminder email sent when your cover is due to expire in case you need to extend or renew. Easy to obtain a quote. Easy to apply.

Affordable premiums & easy online application

I have used Nomads for many years and it has been so quick and easy to apply. Affordable premiums.

Peace of mind when travelling

Thankfully I've never had to make a claim while overseas but I did have to make one while travelling in Australia as my hire car was involved in a carpark bingle, causing panel damage. The claims process was very smooth and, although initially out of pocket for the compulsory excess claims, I was quickly reimbursed once the claim had gone through. The claim was completed online and was processed promptly and efficiently. The staff I spoke to were friendly and knowledgeable. One small negative is that I have an existing medical condition that I need to declare when I travel overseas. I have no issues with doing this however as a frequent traveller, it would be beneficial if I was not required to do this for each trip. Other than this, I am very happy with the customer service provided at QBE.

Fast and efficient customer care

Great no hassle service with prompt responses to querying regarding my claim. I photographed the damage to my suitcase then simply purchased and replaced my badly damaged suitcase with a new one, purchased in Paris of course. Provided the receipts along with my claim on my return home and had a cheque within a couple of weeks. Great service!

Very easy to set up, competitive premium

Very easy to organise online, I was confident they would stand by their promises should the need arise after a friend was able to receive insurance payout following an illness while on holiday.

DRAMA to make a small claim for a very small injury & still on going

I bought Travel Insurance for my parents when I booked a trip for them to Melbourne. They had to claim against it and deliberately gave them the run around with increasingly difficult and additional requirements for documentation beyond what was originally requested. I firmly believe that they were hoping that they would give up. I will never buy another QBE insurance product ever again nor recommend them to anyone!

Just what we wanted

Recommended by a travel agent we trust / competitive rate / easy paperwork / quick / adequate cover / just what we wanted.

Reliable and good customer service

I was supposed to be volunteering in South Africa, when a month out I injured my foot badly enough that my doctor told me I couldn't go because of safety concerns and ongoing medical needs. QBE stepped in and refunded everything from my trip, including my flights, accommodation, and program fees.

Moscow City Guides and Media

Nightlife, arts and culture listings for moscow.

The Moscow Times english-language newspaper publishes a weekly listing of events, also available on their website: www.themoscowtimes.com/arts_n_ideas/calendar/

Another good English-language resource is A-A-AH  – www.a-a-ah.com/events-in-moscow – which has a good clubs listings and publishes interesting cultural events.

Your best way, though, is to go on Facebook pages of the places we recommend in our Moscow Guide and check out what's on there. We post the most interesting events on our Way to Russia Facebook Page as well, so check it out occasionally!

A great listing of public lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences happening in Moscow is available on Theory and Practice portal – www.tandp.ru – even though it's in Russian you can find really interesting talks on Russian cinema, software development, literary studies and anything else you want on there.

Among the Russian listings, Afisha (www. afisha.ru ) magazine is the most popular one.  While being slightly pretentious, it provides a lot of information and has good nightlife and art listings.

Another interesting newspaper is Bolshoy Gorod – www.bg.ru – which is distributed for free and has extensive listings. They also have a blog for each area of Moscow (in Russian).

Finally, Look At Me - www.lookatme.ru – is a sure source to find some party or exhibition you like.

Newspapers & Magazines

In english language,   in russian language.

The weekly Komsomolka is the local version of the UK Sun, but intelligentsia (smart people) prefer the free Bolshoy Gorod, which is a bit like the local version of The Village Voice, but not as big.

The "mainstream" fashion is determined by bi-weekly Afisha ( www.afisha.ru ) magazine.

The weekly Expert ( www.expert.ru ) and Itogi ( www.itogi.ru ) magazines provide comprehensive business, finance, and politics analysis.

The monthly magazines are anything from Playboy to Forbes, and from Cosmopolitan to The Rolling Stone.

Foreign Press

You can buy foreign magazines and newspapers in Moscow. Usually, they are sold in 5-star hotels, but the prices there are much too high. Also, you can try some newstands in the city (especially on Tverskaya St.), but the prices are high also, and the selection is poor.

However, there's a couple of places in Moscow, where you can get almost any magazine or newspaper, in English and in other languages. 1. Maxim's News Stand. They have everything, if they don't -- you can order. Prices are lower than on the cover. Also, they sell books and movies in English. Metro: Savyolovskaya (grey line, north center), Address: Nizhnyaya Maslovska, #2 (an underground pass near Savyolovskaya metro). Open hours: Mon-Sat 11.00 to 19.30 2. Arbat Supermarket. Just next to the entrance they sell some English-language magazines and fresh newspapers. Metro: Arbatskaya. Address: Novy Arbat st, Novoarbatsky supermarket - grocery store (there's only one, the entrance is on the street side). 3. Bookberry. The new Moscow book supermarket has an extensive section of foreign magazines and newspapers at moderate prices. Metro: Arbatskaya, Tverskaya (blue, purple line). Address: Boulevard Ring (walk from Novy Arbat towards Pushkinskaya square along Zubovsky boulevard and the shop will be to your left). Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00

4. Gorbushka. The famous Moscow pirate CD, DVD, Software and official electronics market specializes in foreign music and DJ magazines. Address: metro Bagrationovskaya (Moscow west), a large building outside the exit - the crowds walks in its direction. Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00 If for some reason you can't buy the thing you need in any of the shops above, try to go to some European or American medical or dental center - they have a great selection of magazines in their reception areas.
