My husband, sister-in-law, and I went on a 2 week pilgrimage tour through Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. While all the sites of our visit were lovely, our travel experience getting to Lisbon was an absolute horror. The three of us as well as one other member of the group were basically abandoned by the travel agency as we tried multiple times to contact them. Even though we had all paid over $5000 per person, our seats from LAX to Lisbon were apparently never confirmed by the agency and we were put on stand by. We went from LAX (where we had to wait for 8 hours to get seats on a flight) to Heathrow, where we waited another 10 hours on stand by to get on a flight to Lisbon. During this time, we reached out to Adriatic Tours a multitude of times where no one replied to emails or answered our calls. We had to go to 4 different airlines to try to get our flights. Once we got there, there was no apology offered by the tour host or anyone else from Adriatic Tours. At the end of the trip, we were worried the same issue would arise on our trip back home, so we tried speaking to our tour host Beth, who verbally accosted my sister in law. We finally received our flight confirmation and seat assignments 3 hours before our scheduled flight, only after my sister in law followed the host around the Vatican to get her to call and confirm. This was the absolute worst travel experience of my life and quite frankly, a complete and utter scam. To put people through this kind of experience after they have already been paid is unconscionable, especially given the fact that this was a tour of holy sites.

Hello Mrs. Chin, Hope all is well. On November 10, our manager sent you an explanation from our office showing that Adriatic Travel was not at fault for what occurred from Delta Airlines. Delta Airlines has put in writing that the mis-hap was on their end due to over booking and willing to offer the 4 of you a gift card. I would hope that this would release Adriatic Travel of some liability and the 1 star rating you provided here which seems to be untrue. We do not send any passengers on any of our trips unless this is completed and hence our company being in business for 44 years. Here is the email sent from Delta to Adriatic Travel: Thank you for reaching out to us. Please excuse the tardiness of my reply. After reading your email, I completely understand why you wanted to let us know about mutual passengers travel experience regarding their Lisbon trip. I regret to read our passengers seats were not confirmed. Our goal is to have a seamless operation with third party agencies but sometimes our systems don't work together like they should. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Let me assure you that your experience is an exception and not the norm. I've forwarded your comments to our Reservations leadership team. By providing your feedback it allows us to make necessary improvements to become a better airline. As a goodwill gesture, we will offer the clients gift card from [email protected] in separate emails within three business days and can select the gift cards of your choice within 60 days of receipt. Recently got back from 12 day Egypt,Holyland,Jordan pilgrimage.Greatly disappointed esp Egypt trip cause Alexandria scheduled trip was cancelled instead the tour guide Sam took us to churches & papyrus store.He said nothing to see in Alexandria just catacombs.Not everyone in the group must have read how beautiful Alexandria is esp main attractions such as Pharos lighthouse,bibliotheca etc..travel wise round trip just 5 hrs only as compared to Sharm El S w/c 8 hrs.Sir Anton please take note! Other than that Holyland & Jordan was excellent& kudos to Michael & Mohammed our tour guide.

If you can choose the company you want go with choose someone else. I'm writing from Italy at the moment on the 10th of an 11 day trip. Last year the group I was with used George's International Tours (San Diego). That was a much better experience for me. So don't say I didn't warn you.

This agency was recommended to me by a nice Croatian family I met at Croatian consulate in LA. I checked out their website before contacting them and they have quite a few packages that you can book. However, I have 2 weeks to spend in Croatia and the packages they offer didn't fit, so I had to do a custom tour. Peter contacted me after I sent an email. Within a few days he sent me an email with a complete itinerary starting from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. He quoted me with competitive pricing and even though I didn't get a chance to book with his agency due to conflicting schedules, Peter went above and beyond for me in planning my trip. I highly recommend this agency when planning a trip to Croatia and other Eastern European countries. Thank you so much, Peter, I had the best time in your beautiful country!

We had a wonderful experience with Peter at Adriatic Travel. We went to Croatia for our honeymoon, and thankfully a friend introduced us to Peter shortly before. He made our airport transport, lodging, and tour accommodations. He was very helpful and easy to work with, despite our short notice. We had an issue with our flights (not his fault, but ours as we booked them without his assistance), and he was readily available to help us by phone and email. He had a great idea that solved our problem. Zoran, who provided hotel transport in Dubrovnik and a Montenegro tour, was lovely as well. He was very patient with all of our questions about Dubrovnik, Croatia, Montenegro, the Yugoslavian War, local food and culture!

Peter and Adriatic Travel were awesome! They took care of a group of 8 of us and they are top notch! Their family is from Croatia so they had great reccomendations for our Croatia trip and their professionalism and service were great. I reccomend Adriatic Travel to anyone, whether you're doing a whole encompassing trip and need a boat, hotels, restuarants etc, have a huge group or if you even if it's a few people who need a couple hotel rooms if you're backpacking around as they know the ins and outs of whole process and country! GREAT EXPERIENCE!

I've known of Adriatic Travel for a while now and how great their service is when it comes to traveling, but had never used them before . I had never been to Mexico and was planning a trip this past October and i wanted to make sure I had the best time possible there, and I must say, I am so glad I went with these guys for my traveling experience . Peter is a very helpful and experienced guy and just made my life so much easier I must say . I didnt know what places to visit and what activities to do and Peter had recommendations for our group of what to do out there. Definitely recommend them for your future trips.

Local News | How San Pedro’s Croatian community helped shape the port town

Menus at restaurants around town feature items such as cevapcici, kapus, and coppino (translations: a sausage dish, coleslaw and fish stew).

There’s a weekly Croatian language Mass at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church along with traditional Croatian dinners.

According a long popular newspaper column written in the 1980s, a real San Pedran’s name ends in a vowel “or the last syllable is pronounced ‘itch.’ “

Since before World War I, the close-knit seaside community has been home to one of the largest Croatian populations this side of the Adriatic Sea.

And on Sunday, July 15, San Pedro’s Croatian pride will be out in force to cheer the homeland on in its admittedly uphill battle to beat France for soccer’s coveted World Cup title.

Early immigrants

In many ways, San Pedro was a natural and familiar home away from home: a hillside coastline with dramatic cliffs, a mild Mediterranean climate and plenty of work as commercial fishermen.

“The first Croatians immigrated to the San Pedro area at the turn of the last century and primarily came from the Dalmatian coastline, with quite a few immigrants coming from the islands off the coastline,” said former Los Angeles City Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr., president of San Pedro’s Dalmatian-American Club founded in the 1920s.

They made their mark, along with many of their fellow Italian immigrants, on San Pedro’s distinctive architecture in the 1920s and 1930s.

“You see a lot of red-tile roofs and white-washed walls throughout the older parts of San Pedro, residential construction with a very Mediterranean style architecture,” Svorinich said. “They built homes that looked like ‘home.’ “

Many never left and it is estimated that some 30,000 people with Croatian roots live in San Pedro, the southernmost community of more than 80,000 people in the city of Los Angeles.

“We have the reputation in the United States as being a really strong and concentrated Croatian community,” said Peter J. Hazdovac, president of the Croatian American Club where more than 1,000 people are expected to gather Sunday morning for an outdoor viewing party. “Generations have passed and it becomes watered down, but San Pedro is (still) known as one of the hubs.”

From the fishing and canning industries, San Pedro’s Croatians branched out into the building trades and professions.

Younger generations went on to earn college degrees and are now among San Pedro’s leading physicians and lawmakers.

Among the more familiar were:

• Martin J. Bogdanovich,  Joseph P. Mardesich, Nick Vilicich, James Mirkovich, and Ivo Mirkovich incorporated the French Sardine Company. The were pioneers in what was to become a cannery row in San Pedro.
• Assemblyman Vincent Thomas (originally Tomasevich) who the lawmaker behind the construction of San Pedro’s green suspension bridge built in the 1960s and named after him. The bridge eliminated the need for a ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island
• More recently, the community has produced a host of harbor commissioners, judges, and elected city, county and state officials.

Croatian Hall for a new generation

A renovation project is underway at what is more commonly called Croatian Hall, said Hazdovac, 32, who also owns Adriatic Travel in San Pedro. He is one of the younger Croatian-Americans interested in preserving and celebrating the culture.

That’s where the biggest celebration will take place on Sunday.

Founded in the 1960s, the hall at 631 W. Ninth St. was energized in the 1990s during Croatia’s fight for independence when it served as the local hub for news about the war and for the relief campaign.

Through the years, political upheaval in the homeland reverberated across the continents in San Pedro, causing division and in-fighting among the expatriates abroad after Croatia became part of Yugoslavia, an independent communist nation under Marshal Josef Tito.

It took a war to quell the internal discord.

Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, although it took four years of fighting before Serb armies were cleared from Croatian lands.

In the aftermath, the San Pedro Croatian community has largely come together since in a collective embrace of their culture.

Every year, local Croatians celebrate their homeland’s independence by closing down Ninth Street in front of the Croatian American Hall where costumed dancers and other performers entertain and celebrate.

Svorinich isn’t alone when he muses about how “a country that is relatively young on the world stage” has come so far in the race for the World Cup.

“Croatia is a small country of about 4 million people,” said Svorinich, who served as the councilman for the Watts-to-Harbor Area district from 1993 to 2001. “It’s small but mighty.”

A ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event

Sunday’s game has everyone on pins and needles, Svorinich said, adding that many non-Croatians will be joining to cheer the underdog.

Croatian flags these days dominate in town as San Pedro gears up to cheer for the Old County home team. Fans are seen throughout town showing off Croatia’s distinctive checkerboard emblem on everything from T-shirts to baby strollers.

Hazdovac, who was scrambling on Friday, July 13, to prepare for the massive incoming crowds, said Sunday’s game will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

While two previous games in the World Cup series drew big crowds to the Croatian American Club for viewing parties in recent weeks, Sunday’s ultimate high-stakes finale will likely dwarf all that.

“Everyone is getting their checkers out of their closets, you end up seeing people you haven’t seen in a while,” he said. “You see people coming out who have just the smallest Croatian background or have Croatian friends. It’s an environment we’re used to — we all get together and we’re loud and we scream together and we cheer together.”

Win or lose

If Croatia wins, Hazdovac said, the party will likely carry on into the evening. No one will want to go home.

If they lose?

That’s still cause for celebration, Svorinich said.

“We’ll be second in the world and that’s an accomplishment in itself,” he said. “But we do expect to win.”

Viewing parties

Croatia faces off against France at 8 a.m. Sunday, July 15, and San Pedro is awake and ready.

• The Croatian American Club will host an outdoor viewing party in front of its hall at 631 W. Ninth St. To accommodate crowds expected to number more than 1,000, Ninth Street between Gaffey Street and Grand Avenue will be closed to traffic from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Plans are for a giant screen to be set up for viewing. Guests might want to bring their own chairs, although about 200 chairs will be available. The event (attendance is free) will feature live music and possibly a food truck. As of Friday, July 13, plans were still being pulled together.
• The Dalmatian-American Club, only several blocks away at 1639 S. Palos Verdes St., will be showing the game on its movie-theater screen in the ballroom. There also will be two large flat screen TVs in the main bar with seating and standing viewing areas. For those who come early, there is a pre-game optional breakfast at 7 a.m. ($10 for adults, $5 for children). Doors open at 6:45 a.m. and attending the viewing party is free. A no-host bar will be available.Other bars and dining establishments likely will be open throughout downtown San Pedro as well.
