Sunday Depart Leyland at 14:00pm for our journey to Hull where we will board our overnight ferry to take us on a mini cruise to Rotterdam, once onboard disembark the coach (we suggest taking an overnight bag so that your main case can be left on the coach, make sure you pack essentials, medication etc in your overnight bag). We will have dinner onboard the ferry, enjoy the onboard entertainment before retiring to your cabin for the night. Monday Following breakfast on-board the ferry, re-join the coach to continue our journey to Amsterdam where we will spend free time to explore, allowing time for lunch before departing Amsterdam at 16.00hrs to head to our hotel for check-in. For those wishing to head back into Amsterdam this evening there is a tram stop 350yards (7-minute walk) from the hotel at Admiraal Helfrichstraat with the number 13 tram running every 8mins directly into Dam Square. You can purchase a 24hr ticket directly from the conductor, at the time of the brochure going to print this was 9 euros or pre-purchase an 'I Amsterdam City Card' (see Tues itinerary for details). Tuesday Following a leisurely breakfast, relax at the hotel or perhaps take a walk in one of the beautiful local parks, join the coach at 11.00hrs as we head into Amsterdam for free time to explore, allowing time for lunch and an evening meal. This wonderful city is filled with world-renowned museums and attractions waiting to be discovered. Perhaps take a canal cruise, hire a bike or enjoy the wonderful colours and scents at the famous floating flower market. Re-join the coach at 20.00hrs for our return to the hotel. For those wishing to stay in the city and make your own way back just inform your driver that you won't be travelling back to the hotel. (N.B it is advisable to pre-book timeslots for popular museums and attractions before travelling, you can also purchase the 'I Amsterdam City Card' which gains free entry to more than 70 museums and attractions, please check beforehand to ensure the attractions you wish to visit are covered, this will also cover canal cruise, public transport and bike rental, prices vary dependant on which duration you select https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/tickets/i-amsterdam-city-card ). Wednesday Check out of our hotel following a leisurely breakfast to begin our journey to board the ferry in Rotterdam, before we do head to Zaanse-Schans, a beautiful and unique area full of windmills, handicraft shops and museums. Perhaps visit the warehouse where traditional clogs are made, be drawn in by the wonderful aroma of freshly baked cookies as you approach the bakery museum, don't miss out on the cheese factory, pewter foundry and of course the magnificent windmills. Continue our journey to Rotterdam to check in at the port, once onboard the ferry disembark the coach (don't forget your overnight bag) enjoy an evening meal and onboard entertainment before retiring to our cabins. Thursday Following breakfast onboard the ferry re-join the coach as we disembark in Hull to continue our journey home.

Amsterdam Mini Cruise - Pride of Rotterdam (Caledonian Travel)

My partner and I have just returned from a 3 day mini cruise to Amsterdam. We travelled from Glasgow by coach with Caledonian Travel to meet the Pride of Rotterdam at Hull. The journey from Glasgow to Hull was 6.5 hours which we found a bit too long but the crossing to Rotterdam was good. We checked in around 5pm but the ship wasn't setting sail until 8.30pm, however there was plenty to do on board. We had a basic twin cabin, which was very small but it had everything we needed. We had dinner on board in 'The Kitchen' restaurant which we paid for up front. I think by doing this we saved around £7 each. It was a buffet style restaurant and there was plenty of choice, although some of the food was luke warm, but we enjoyed the selections. We made use of the bars and entertainment on board and quite enjoyed what they had to offer. We were lucky enough to have the same cabin on the return journey so were able to leave our luggage in the cabin while we spent the day in Amsterdam. The only complaint we had was the two hour bus journey into the city. Having been awake since 6am (the captain uses the public address system as an alarm call) we found this was very long, particularly on the way back when it was dark and it was rush hour. The breakfast on board was also buffet style and there was plenty of choice from continental to full English. I would take this trip again if I didn't have to travel all the way from Glasgow first. Also being smokers, we had to go to the rear of either deck 10 or deck 12, but deck 12 had a bar/smokers area which was partly covered so you could have a drink and a cigarette without getting wet.

Instead of a pleasant day trip I felt the continual queuing, and pricing onboard was unbearable. The exchange rates of the currency you were trying to pay in were a rip off. I have lived in the SE for a long time and had many ferry experiences and P&O is definately off my list now. There are plenty of other operators out there.

I went on the car shopping service trip. The price was fantastic you stay on board with car for the round trip and can buy duty free goods. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and the Spirit of Britain is a modern clean and great boat to travel on.

Four of us went to Calais on a day trip to stock up for Christmas. From the online booking procedure to the ferry crossing itself everything went without a hitch. The ship was comfortable. The food on board was good and reasonably priced. I would not hesitate using P&O Ferries in the future.

Just been this weekend and couldn't fault it apart from if a newbie to this have to keep asking questions regarding meal times etc. Buy cigarettes on the boat, you can buy 40 from each bar, we had 5 bars so not a problem as they are really cheap, do not buy from duty free as expensive, bought them in bruges. Worked out at £3.60 per 20 packet. Bought 6 sleeves back. Guideline is 800 but if you get asked (not likely) as long as you can prove for yourself fine can bring as many as you like. Well worth the canal trip for 1/2 hour now 7.60 euros but well worth it, see a different side of bruges. Went to the market but very expensive so don't expect to get bargains as it is not going to happen and their sizes are very different to ours, so be mindful. If ordering a beer in Bruges be mindful as a large is about 3 pints in a huge tankard and about 12.50 euros for the experience. Definitely recommend upgrading to deluxe on the boat as the outside cabins even though an upgrade are not a patch on the deluxe. Extra £40 per night but well worth it, soft drinks, champagne voucher, telly, bath robes and tea coffee etc, thoroughly luxurious. Can't wait to do it again only to a different place. Hats off to P & O

Since the closure of Sea France Ferries, we have returned to P&O, bur seem to always have a problem on each trip. We arrived at Dover 45 minutes prior to departure as it stipulates that you need to arrive 30 minutes prior to departure. However! there was only 1, yes one check-in point open, which also doubled as a sales point. There was 5 cars in front of us buying tickets and it took approximately 25 minutes for this to take place, which resulted in us MISSING our ferry. The lady who served us was unapologetic and totally careless, just shrugging her shoulders. We were late for our appointment in France. We have been traveling on business back and forth to France over 20 years now and have seen P&O's service and food standards slowly deteriorate. The time has come for us to find an alternative solution, again. It is all such a shame as we would love to support this company.

On a coach break to Amsterdam you can’t help but fall in love with this beautiful city with its blend of cultural delights and stunning architecture.

Down by the canal you can enjoy a stroll past its iconic coloured buildings and can enjoy a coffee in one of the pavement cafes which line its banks. You can also climb aboard one of the many boats and glide down the canal for a romantic cruise.

Day 1 – Amsterdam

Welcome to Amsterdam.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your trip manager. Dine on a delightful breakfast or lunch (depending on your arrival time) at the hotel before embarking on a beautiful exploration. Explore the reclaimed city of lazily meandering canals that create 90-islands that are connected by over 1200 bridges. The grachtenpand houses will enchant you as you wander through the narrow streets with your trip manager.

You’ll find Amsterdam to be witty and interlaced with hidden gardens, potent jenever (gin) distilleries, technicolored Dutch homeware and clothing boutiques, art galleries, craft breweries, tulip vendors, and classic restaurants. Perhaps stop and enjoy a gezelligheid in a bruin café, a ‘brown’ café named for its smoke-stained wooden paneling. There is no shortage of art; Vincent Van Gogh has the most extensive collection of the native artist’s work, not to mention Rembrandts and Vermeers in the impressive Rijksmuseum. If you want to feel the wind in your hair, then jump on board an open-air canal boat.

When you return to your hotel, you might want to continue exploring your local neighborhood or rest and enjoy cocktails and dinner later in the evening.

Day 2 – Amsterdam

Start the day with a traditional Dutch breakfast of appelstroop, hagelslag, cheese, and cold meats on sliced bread.

There is a vast collection of curated explorations that you can choose from, which will allow you to discover Anne Frank House, houseboats, or stroll through the pretty neighborhood of Jordaan. Each Saturday, Lindengracht magically transforms into a large scale open-air market, where you can find local crafts, produce, flowers, and endless edible goodies. Join the Netherland’s Windmills and Cultural Heritage Exploration to uncover the fascinating history of this eccentric city.

Day 3 – Amsterdam to Paris

After another hearty Dutch breakfast, you will travel in first-class luxury on the French TGV.

You’ll travel through the three countries Holland, Belgium, and France. Sit back and enjoy the scenery glide past your window. Your trip manager is always on hand if you want to chat about the various countries and up-and-coming curated or exclusive explorations.

On arrival to Paris, your guide will take you on a remarkable tour of the city and discover the various highlights, well-loved icons, and hidden gems, not to mention uncovering some of the mysterious secrets that the city holds. Upon arrival in Geneva, freshen up in your beautiful hotel before exploring Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city. Day 6 – Geneva

Geneva has a rich heritage that embraces multicultural communities that bring a fusion of traditions to the vibrant city. Explore the refined art of watchmaking in the Old Town. If you prefer to go further afield, consider Montreux, Lausanne and Vevey Wines, Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Cern Nuclear Plant, or Evian’s Water exploration. Day 7 – Geneva to Bern

After breakfast, leave behind spectacular Geneva and board the Swiss Train and relax in first-class luxury as you journey through the breathtaking scenery of valleys, mountains, villages, lakes, and rivers.

If you are in the mood to explore the region further, you can make a detour to Gruyères, the famous home of Swiss cheese, for an exclusive exploration and a delicious cheese tasting with your guide. Be spellbound by the extraordinary Gruyères Castle that stands with might at the peak of Fribourg’s imposing Alpine foothills. La Maison Cailler is one of the iconic symbols of La Gruyère; the Cailler family has been producing indulgent chocolate since 1898; you will be able to sample the world’s finest chocolate; this is a must-do Swiss chocolate tasting. Day 8 – Bern

Start your day with a breakfast filled with Bern’s specialties.

Visit more of Bern’s center built in today’s distinctive green-grey sandstone after fire ravaged the city in 1405. Cobbled streets and folkloric fountains aesthetically enhance the city. Bern’s glorious redroofed buildings swathe the Aare river. If you desire to explore beyond the region, take an additional curated exploration and visit Basel and its Beer Heritage, Interlaken and the top of Europe, or even explore Thun and hike around the famous Oechinensee region.

Day 9 – Bern to Milan

Your day will start bright and early after a filling breakfast at your hotel.

You’ll travel on the Swiss Train in first-class comfort and watch the scenic Alps and southern Switzerland glide past your window. You will snake past glorious lakes such as Lake Lugano, rivers, and across the border into northern Italy.

Upon arriving into the style-center of Italy, Milan boasts a juxtaposition of sustainable architecture and futuristic skylines. It’s home to the finest Italian fashion houses, spas, bars, galleries, hotels, and cultural developments. The city boasts the highest number of Michelin stars in the country. Your guide will take you on a magical tour that will lead you to discover Milan’s most fashionable streets, local heritage sites, and the medieval Duomo Cathedral, which took a staggering six centuries to construct.

In the late afternoon, you can return to your Milanese hotel to relax or continue to explore the vibrant city on your own or with another tour. In the evening, you’ll be served delicious cocktails and dinner in the hotel.

Day 10 – Milan

Start your day with a traditional Milanese breakfast of quintessential warm brioche and a caffeine-filled cappuccino.

There are many tours to choose from in and around Milan, so choose wisely. Carefully curated explorations are available that allow you to discover the city known for its couture and energy. The Bernina Express is the loftiest Alps railway that climbs glistening glaciers as it ascends from the palms of Italy below. Travel to the fishing village of Portofino on the Italian Riviera and wander through small cobbled squares, pastel-colored houses, and seafood eateries that jostle for position on the harbor. If you prefer city vibes, discover Turin and its baroque buildings and delicious cafes that line pretty boulevards and grand squares.

Day 11 – Milan to Florence

After another delightful Milanese breakfast, you’ll board your Italian high-speed train.

Travel from Milan to Florence through the majestic Tuscan countryside and its seemingly endless ancient vineyards.

Florence is a small city in northeastern Tuscany on the banks of the Arno river. Feast your eyes on world-class art and your tastebuds on gourmet Tuscan cuisine. Your trip manager will lead you on a ‘passeggiata’ of the city in a positively glorious and romantic light and visit Piazzale Michelangelo, the city’s square with an incredible panoramic view of Florence. Discover Renaissance architecture, infinite religious buildings and galleries, white buildings capped with red roofs, and winding ancient streets, or wander through the pristinely manicured pathways of Boboli Gardens.

After your exploration, you can choose to return to your hotel to relax or continue exploring the remarkable city tapestry cape on your own or as part of a curated exploration. The hotel will serve you Florentine cocktails and a lavish three-course dinner in the evening.

Day 12 – Florence

After a full breakfast of Florence’s flavors and specialties, you can explore Florence on your own or choose one or two of the curated explorations.

Head afield of the city and discover Tuscany’s delightful and prolific vineyards and sample the finest Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. You might want to explore the famous leaning tower of Pisa and the surrounding well-preserved Romanesque buildings. Cinque Terre is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to dramatic coastal scenery and brightly colored fishing villages somehow hewn into seemingly impregnable cliffsides. There are endless options for you to enjoy.

Day 13 – Florence to Venice

Depart beautiful Florence in first-class accommodation on the Italian high-speed train and traverse the spectacular coastline and countryside of northern Italy to Venice.

Venice is a fairytale city. The Grand Canal reflects centuries of glorious Venetian architecture in the 50 palazzi and six churches lining its meandering banks. The backstreets are home to spectacular oversized Paolo Veronese historical paintings of religion and mythology, such as The Wedding at Cana and The Feast in the House of Levi. Savor Venetian cuisine has generous dashes of flavors from ancient spice routes in cicheti (Venetian tapas) washed down with Veneto’s signature bubbly, Prosecco. After your city tour, continue to explore this fascinating city on foot or by gondola. I just love culturally diverse cities, and Amsterdam, the capital city of Holland, certainly doesn’t disappoint. Once you arrive here, there’s lots and lots to see and do. From the world-famous galleries and museums such as the Van Gogh Museum to the high street and boutique shopping, picturesque canals, and beautiful architecture, there is so much to absorb. There are even novelty attractions you can visit, such as Madame Tussauds, or if you enjoy the outdoors, then why not visit one of the many parks, such as Vondelpark, which is an enormous park in the south of the city.

Getting to Amsterdam is very straightforward, and there are many mini-cruise break options from the UK to Holland. I have chosen a selection of short cruises with a few various options; some of them can be taken regularly throughout the year, offering flexibility to the traveler, whilst others I have selected are more luxurious mini-cruises that restrict the traveler to a certain date. With plenty of options from the really cheap travel bargain to an expensive luxury cruise, the choice really is yours!

Their Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruises depart daily from Newcastle and are perfect for weekend getaways and short city breaks, combining the leisure of ferry travel with the excitement of Holland’s cosmopolitan capital. The mini-cruise package is an amazing deal that includes the crossing itself, ensuite accommodation on board as well, as coach transfers from IJmuiden port to the city of Amsterdam, where you’ll have ample time to take in some local sights and attractions.

Upon arrival at Keukenhof, you don’t even need to worry about queuing to purchase an entrance ticket as these are also included, which frees up your three and a half hours to fully explore the gardens.
