'Star Trek: Discovery' season 4 will stream on Pluto TV in some countries

The move is a consolation prize for fans who lost netflix access..

Don't panic that Star Trek: Discovery vanished from Netflix in many countries right before season 4 arrived — you might have a stopgap solution, depending on where you live. ViacomCBS has revealed that Discovery 's latest season will be available on the company's free Pluto TV service in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK starting November 26th. New episodes will be available each Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9PM local time. There will be a simulcast on the Star Trek channel in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

If you'd rather have more permanent copies, people in France, Germany, Russia, South Korea and the UK can also buy the fourth season from "participating digital platforms" starting on the 26th. If Paramount+ is already available in a country, such as Australia, many Latin American countries and Scandinavian nations, you'll have to sign up but can get 50 percent off the first three months with the code STARTREK.

This still leaves former Netflix viewers a step behind their Paramount+ counterparts, but they at least won't have to wait until 2022 to follow Michael Burnham's latest exploits. And ViacomCBS wins regardless — this might spike Pluto TV membership, even if only some users stick around once Paramount+ is available in their regions.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 4 Debuting Internationally On Friday On Pluto TV And Paramount+

| November 24, 2021 | By: Anthony Pascale 67 comments so far

Last week ViacomCBS surprised the world by announcing they had bought back the international rights for Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix, with the launch of season four outside North America moved to Paramount+ internationally in early 2022. But today they announced they are moving that release date up to this Friday.

Season 4 arrives this week internationally

The news of the move from Netflix to Paramount+ along with the last-minute delay until early 2022 did not go over well with fans, and even the cast and creatives behind the show were caught off guard . Today ViacomCBS International Networks made a new announcement to make it clear to fans that they are listening. The statement starts with:

To all of the International Star Trek: Discovery fans: we hear you. We love this series too. We love it for the incredible cast, the hardworking crew, the imaginative storytelling, the groundbreaking, diverse characters who bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. Star Trek has always put its fans first. We want to do the same.

In order to accommodate the transition from Netflix to Paramount+ internationally, they pledge to do “everything we can to get the new season to you as soon as possible.” How this will be done will differ based on country (see specifics below). The statement concludes with this pledge:

We too are super fans of Star Trek and incredibly proud of Discovery . We promise to give this franchise and its loyal fans all the global love and visibility it deserves in our expanding universe on Paramount+.

Current Paramount+ countries

Paramount+ has already launched in a number of territories and season four will debut on Friday, November 26 in these countries with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes being released weekly. Paramount+ is currently available in Latin America, the Nordic Countries, and Australia. They are also offering fans signing up to Paramount+ a 50% off promotion for their first three months using the code: STARTREK.

Pluto TV Europe

In Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, season 4 will be made available on ViacomCBS’ free live streaming service Pluto TV . New episodes will drop at 9 pm local time on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a simulcast running on the Star Trek channel in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. This will begin with the first two episodes on Friday, November 26.

Available for purchase in select countries

In the UK, Germany, France, Russia, South Korea and additional select countries, Season 4 will be available for purchase on participating digital platforms beginning Friday, November 26.

Many thanks for the heads up. I believe Pluto is available via the Roku streaming stick here in the UK, although I’m sure there will be numerous ways to access this channel.

This is excellent news, I’m glad they listened and corrected their mistake. Pluto is also available on Amazon Fire Stick, LG televisions and through a web browser.

Thanks Matt.

I can confirm you can also get the Android app and cast to your Stadia and Chromecast. I’m not sure what’s meant by sci-fi channel though because there isn’t one. I just assume we’ll be able to search and find it from 9pm 26/11

This suggests there is demand for Secret Hideout Trek content internationally, despite what the naysayers say. The suits got enough blowback that they knew they had a problem they needed to fix. Bad on them for causing the problem, good on them for listening to their customers, and fixing their mistake.

It still seems to me that ViacomCBS got caught in a game of chicken in its renewal negotiations with Netflix, and someone(s) at the senior level weren’t convinced of a need for an interim solution.

The audience blowback may have been necessary to unstick some high level authorizations to go with the alternative option.

It wasn’t a game of chicken. They show was produced for All Access, not Netflix. What they had with Netflix was a licensing deal to provide the show in regions where All Access wasn’t available and it would seem that they had an option to take the show back at their discretion. Viacom needs content for Paramount+ and if you’re rolling out your service where Netflix is already available you kind of need your show back otherwise people won’t subscribe.

Pluto accomplishes the same in regions where Paramount+ isn’t available since it’s still gives Viacom control of their own content.

ViacomCBS policy would have permitted a non-exclusive licence to Netflix that retained Paramount+ the right to stream as well where it exists. In fact, this negotiating position was publicly stated at investors meetings with the upcoming Discovery renewal specifically cited.

So, it clearly sounds as though negotiations for a non-exclusive licence to Netflix failed, but continued to the last minute.

In bargaining, that’s usually a sign of one side playing chicken to test if the other will cross its non-negotiable ‘red lines’.

On Netflix side,, it sounds like they were testing to see if ViacomCBS will hold to its new corporate no exclusive content licence policy.

On both sides, it seems like it was about more than just Discovery but instead ViacomCBS stance as a content producer.

I mean it was playing in 190 countries on Netflix. Even if you have a low average bare bottom, just as an example, of 10,000 Discovery fans averaged per country, multiply that by 190 you still have millions of potential upset fans. You add another zero and you have tens of millions.

That’s the thing, these Star Trek shows are playing globally on a level that’s never been done before until Netflix showed up. More people are probably watching the classic shows today than they ever did when they were in production because the access is so much bigger and easier now. I mean even when Voyager and Enterprise was on the air, there were people IN America that didn’t have access to those shows then if UPN weren’t in their area. And now just recently I was talking to someone on Reddit a few weeks ago who is a big Enterprise fan from the Philippines and started watching Trek for the first time a year ago.

Discovery got a huge benefit of being the first Trek show aired not to just majority of the world, but also to everyone at relatively the same time as well. None of the older shows ever had that advantage before and in one fell swoop both were taken away with Discovery.

it really comes down to Viacom controlling their own content. CBS needed Netflix more than Netflix needed Discovery when it launched. Now that Paramount+ is rolling out in regions where it hadn’t previously been available they need their shows back.

Discovery doesn’t pull Mandalorian numbers (or as diverse an audience across age and demos) and Paramount+ doesn’t reach nearly as many viewers worldwide but Discovery is still one of their anchor shows.

Of course I agree and I think its nothing wrong for Paramount+ to want Discovery now that they are expanding worldwide. But they could’ve gone a MUCH better way about it at the same time. I don’t pretend to know how these deals work (or the number of lawyers involved to make them happen) but this should’ve been worked out way before a few days before it was suppose to air to the world; many who has been waiting nearly a year for it.

But it does prove that Discovery is popular enough. Like you said, not the Mandalorian but at least has a solid base of followers. Netflix doesn’t seem too bothered to let it go, but it’s still Netflix. They have tons of hits, many probably way more popular than Discovery and most importantly hits that they directly own. And they still have the classic Trek shows to keep showing that’s probably more important to them, at least for now.

But Paramount+ case, they are going to need every advantage going in these new markets and Discovery is an asset. I still wonder what are they going to do about PIC and LDS on Amazon? Hopefully whatever happens, they don’t pull those shows days before their new season premieres too.

This was likely in response to blowback from the cast and producers, not fans.

As for the fix, it’s really more of a stay of execution. Once Paramount+ rolls out in the regions currently served by Pluto, the show will be pulled from Pluto.

The shift to Paramount+ was bungled but it was inevitable.

Amazing! I rarely use Pluto but I have the app. Today a notification came up on my phone with something about Star Trek but I swiped it away without reading, thinking it was recommending me some B movie with a Star Trek actor in. For those that don’t know, it’s a free ad-supported streaming service that mimics live TV by having themed “channels”. I quite like it as a concept, because I sometimes struggle deciding on something on Netflix and would much rather go by what’s on. There is also an on demand option as well. It’s on Android (with casting), iOS (I think), web browser and some smart TV platforms. It has a lot of guff, but a lot of variety, for example there is a dedicated Andromeda (not that that’s not guff) channel and a dedicated Most Haunted channel (definitely guff).

Looking forward to watching this legally! Maybe it will pave the way for more free-to-view Star Trek?

Pluto not available in Ireland unfortunately so looks like we’re going to have to wait until 2022 if we want to watch it legally. That is assuming we’ll be included in the Paramount+ launch. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was assumed we’re still part of the UK.

Yes, Ireland is one of the group of countries getting Paramount+ in 2022 https://trekmovie.com/2021/08/05/star-trek-prodigy-coming-to-paramount-in-uk-europe-as-part-of-new-deal-with-sky/

You will be able to buy each new episode on iTunes every Friday, and other similar places. So each ep should be £2.49 each in UK, so Euro conversion of that. Worth it I reckon, cost of half a sandwich :)

If it’s available via iTunes there’s usually a Season Pass all-in price which works out a little cheaper than buying per-episode, I think. That said, it is incumbent on the broadcaster to deliver the media to iTunes in a reasonable fashion – some shows are delivered day after, others are sometimes MONTHS later (Adventure Time fans know what I mean)

The only silver lining might be when Paramount+ is released in Ireland we’ll get all the S4 episodes released up to that point at once.

Discovery like my gagh is best served binged.

Wow, I’m actually pretty shocked by this decision. It’s painfully common for media giants to ignore its customer base with the arrogant (albeit most correct) assumption that there’s nothing its customers can actually do. So props for ViacomCBS recognizing not only how much they screwed up, but how large a fan base Star Trek has internationally. Obviously this decision is far from perfect since a number of countries still won’t have access to Trek until next yet (and even then, a number of countries will still be left out), but it at least shows that ViacomCBS is listening.

It wasn’t viewers they were responding to, it was the talent and the producer’s who were vocal about unhappy they were. Someone dropped the ball by not informing them of what was going on. Fan considerations were likely secondary.

Glad there is an option now. It was a very bad PR move. Glad they are fixing it…all for the fans!

TrekMovie Team, Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Grateful you keep us up-to-date with everything related to Star Trek. Also The Orville, which is great. =)

Well, if it’s the same Pluto TV we get free in the UK (such as on Fire TV), they just play a few programmes in a loop – usually old re-runs of Maury, Jerry Springer and Ghost Hunters. :-( So if this is true, it’s good news.

Well whoop-di-doo. What a favour to those of us who live in Asian countries who used to get it on Netflix. Still the square root of useless.

Multi platform streaming generally is in such a messy transitional phase at the moment. It feels mad that there is so much territorial variation when the tech is global, hopefully it will be temporary effect (until paramount+ collapses for lack of scale or whatever)

Just to put this in perspective: the way most independent filmmakers have been able to make money from the VHS era on, is to get paid by territory. As the world becomes one territory, we lose a lot of options, and a lot of potential income.

I find it rather odd how so many fans tear apart this series year after year, yet when all of sudden there may be a delay in getting the new season, they act like Santa Claus cancelled Christmas?

If Santa Clause cancels Christmas 2 days before, than fans have a reason to act that way.

Sure, but if a broad group of fans did not like Santa Claus and bitched and moaned about him year after year, would they really care? That was the point I was trying to make.

No worries, for my part I really like Discovery. This was just an observation I made that I found very ironic.

Crazy thought: the people complaining are people who like the show, not people who dislike it. I hope that clears up your confusion.

So every single fan who’s complaining about this on this and other Trek sites this week loves Discovery and haven’t been involved at all in frequently complaining about Discovery that is common on most Trek fan sites?

Really? I did not know that! Thanks! ;-)

Happy to help. I could tell you needed it.

The fans who tear the show apart didn’t care. Those who were vocal about it were fans of the show.

what a great news! it’s a gesture that could cost a lot in terms of subscriptions but will be appreciated by fans.

Not necessarily as it will only be airing free on Pluto in markets where they haven’t launched Paramount+. However, if they were to roll out this service in those territories before the end of season 4 then I think it’s reasonable to assume that the free episodes will stop and anybody wanting to see how the season ends will need to do so via Paramount+ or the digital purchase model. You never know, this strategy might actually increase subscriptions.

Ok, ok, fine. Thank you. Good to see there is still some soul in this economic body.

I wonder if they saw the numbers on the torrent trackers…

As an Australian the 50% off code is tempting

So its free on Pluto Internationally and paywalled domestically? I am reading that right?

Free on Pluto in regions where Paramount+ is not available (and a lot of regions are still shut out).

This is obviously great news. I didn’t even know Pluto was in other countries so anything helps. I actually suggested why not just put the episodes on iTunes since every other Trek show and film is sold there. And since it’s basically everywhere, at least people have the option to buy the episodes and of course Viacom still makes money.

And maybe this was all being done when they decided to take it from Netflix but highly doubtful since the press release said NOTHING about alternative viewings, just that it would arrive on Paramount+ someday. So yeah, I think just like ALL the changes Discovery itself has gotten, it’s mostly due to the backlash. At least they listened and trying to do something about it now. Sad they didn’t have a plan in place before but better late than never.

Right, Discovery is the most reinvented Star Trek series of all time. The only thing I would compare to it is TMP versus TOS, which was a huge shock at the time, both in the look and tone.

I don’t know if I agree its the MOST reinvented. I still think DS9 holds that title and was really the first Star Trek to go a radically different way than the others. Unless you just mean how much they changed the show after it started.

But I will say once they threw it in the 32nd century then yes that did make it feel a very different show in its setting than the others and a big reason I’m a much bigger fan of it today. I been wanting a Trek show to go farther in the future since Voyager and even then I was thinking maybe a century past that show at most.

Yes, I meant how they reinvent it year-to-year.

Well if we are including movies in this then I would say Star Trek 2009 def takes the cake as the most reinvented Trek of them all by a long shot. I mean it was literally reinvented considering they recast the entire TOS cast.

I am not sure if Bryan Fuller is completely responsible, but all I can say is the first few episodes of Discovery were in retrospect, pretty much a disaster. Fortunately, you are right, they have slowly changed the show significantly for the better, morphing it into a completely new show set in the next milleneum. Best of all Kurtzman gets a do-over – in a few months we will get another series set about 10 years before TOS.

I think Fuller was smart to try something new, but to kill off the Captain (who became one of my favorite characters in the 1st hour of the show) and to think insubordination and going to prison was going to somehow endear an audience to the main star of the show was a real miscalculation. Too bad we just can’t redo those first 4 or 5 episodes.

Yup, the last minute cancellation on Netflix was careless to say the least and perhaps incompetent. Good to see them trying to remedy the situation and as you said, better late than never – now only 1 week behind us in the U.S. and Canada.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans!

It was bungled but more likely because of blowback from the talent and producer’s, not fans.

One week for some,lol!

And Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Call me if Paramount suddenly remembers Asia.

Ya know, I’m an ex-pat living in Japan, but I’m really getting annoyed at these “International fans! Don’t worry! We’ll fix this!” just to find out what they meant was “British and Western European fans!”

Just a small part of EU fans, many are left out also in Europe.

Same. Up here in Sapporo though surprisingly not freezing. I found Pluto TV attached to Amazon Prime. Will check for Discovery tomorrow.

Any update for India ?

I’m very pleased with this decision. They seem to be doing their best now to make the show as available as possible, in some format. That’s all I would ever ask.

These are great news! I am really looking forward to the new season of Discovery! But I have to admit I would have prefered to watch it anytime and without advertisement on an ON TIME lauched P+ in Germany or on Netflix. I am deeply confused on the bad management and marketing of the distribution of Star Trek content internationaly. I am absolutly ready to pay P+ (or anybody else) money to watch any new Star Trek but I am shaking my head that they are not able to collect my money because of bad management. But thank you to all parties involved for finding this solution.

The ads yesterday werent that long and not annoying. I enjoyed it watching a Star Trek Show at the evening at a fixed time after soo many years. Feels like old times again!

Someone will have to explain how this is on Pluto in the UK. Pluto is free to air and show left over 90s TV shows like unsolved mysteries and Baywatch. How does a supposed flagship production go out for free?

Because this way they get some revenue, rather than losing it all to piracy

Pluto is owned by Viacom isn’t it?

This is obviously just a temporary measure until they can get Paramount+ up and working. As Matt said, this way they can at least collect some advertising revenue (and smooth things over a little bit with their fan base) instead of pushing people into piracy or pissing them off because they have to wait until next year.

They can also use it to encourage Pluto viewers to subscribe to Paramount+ once it launches.

“New episodes will drop at 9 pm local time”

Is it 1990 again?

Yes, Aired once and that’s it.

Here in Germany it airs 3 times. 1990 again? Hmm, feels like 2002 at 8.15pm again when Enterprise aired. I for my part like the idea that the show is watched at the same time.

I didn’t hear much good about Pluto, and nothing at all before this news dropped. Anyway I’ll probably skip season 4 and maybe Discovery altogether… Never liked the Burnham character and there’s just too little focus on some of the more interesting characters like Saru, Tilly…

As far as I can tell, in the UK it’s shown on Pluto, but only “live” – in other words, no replay option. So if you are out at 9.00pm on Fridays, you miss it. That surprises me.

Dont know if the daily schedule is the same, but here in Germany pluto offers reruns on Saturday and Sunday. And they offer the dubbed and original version on different channels. The commercial breaks weren’t annoying and as long as usual on tv.

Yes, Pluto is more like regular TV than an on-demand streaming service. But like DaveCGN said, the episodes seem to run at least three times. Sure, it’s less convenient than watching the show on Netflix whenever you like. But it’s better than nothing.

Life long admirer of ALL things star trek. But I have to say, with all of the AMAZING hairstylists they have, why can’t they come up with something better for both Adira and Tilley??? Shaved head, really?? And Tilley’s just looks like they just don’t know what they are doing!! Come on guys!!!

Following the removal of Star Trek: Discovery from ViacomCBS’ International distribution partner Netflix, the company has announced that the series will begin streaming earlier than expected on Paramount+ and Pluto TV in multiple markets.

Initially, it was announced that the addition of Discovery to Paramount+ outside of the U.S. would take place sometime in “early 2022,” that date has now been bumped up to Friday, November 26th.

In a statement posted to StarTrek.com, ViacomCBS said:

To all of the International Star Trek: Discovery fans: we hear you. We love this series too. We love it for the incredible cast, the hardworking crew, the imaginative storytelling, the groundbreaking, diverse characters who bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finally has a UK release date – and it's this week

UK viewers don't have to wait much longer

Star Trek Discovery season 4

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finally has a UK release date – new episodes are arriving on British screens this week.

In the past, the first three seasons of the show premiered on Netflix for international audiences 24 hours after the episodes debuted on Paramount Plus in the US – season 4 episode 1 dropped on November 17 across the pond, which would have traditionally meant a premiere on November 18 in the UK.

However, a recent statement from the official Star Trek: Discovery Twitter account stated that season 4 would be delayed for viewers outside the US and Canada – the statement said the new season would be available internationally in 2022 as Paramount Plus expands globally. Seasons 1 to 3 are no longer available to watch on Netflix, either.

That's not the case for the UK, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, however. Free streaming platform Pluto TV will drop new episodes at 9pm local time on its Sci-Fi channel each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting with the first two episodes of season 4 on November 26. Season 4 will also be available for viewers in the UK to purchase from November 26.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 sees Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham take a seat in the captain's chair as the crew of the USS Discovery faces an invisible anomaly, over 900 years after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.

While we wait for new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery to arrive on the small screen, fill out your watch list with our picks of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online today — Paramount Plus, Pluto and Netflix info

Will you see the real Kobayashi Maru when you watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4?

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in an image from Star Trek: Discovery season 4

You'll get a blast from the past when you watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online. The returning Paramount Plus series is starting off with a big familiar phrase: Kobayashi Maru. But we've gotten a report from a reader about another hiccup in actually finding the show, see below in the section about Australia.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4's premiere episode debuted on Nov. 18. It's entitled "Kobayashi Maru," it went live at 3 a.m. ET / 12 a.m. PT.

The season 4 premiere is titled Kobayashi Maru, and as you probably remember that is the name of Starfleet Academy's typically un-beatable test. It's also the name of the periled civilian vessel in said test, which pushes cadets to try and save a ship that (unbeknownst to them) cannot be saved. Since Star Trek: Discovery takes place before Star Trek: The Original Series, one wonders if we'll learn more about the origins of the mission.

The official description suggests that they may actually be saving the original Kobayashi Maru: "After months spent reconnecting the Federation with distant worlds, Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery are sent to assist a damaged space station – a seemingly routine mission that reveals the existence of a terrifying new threat."

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 is also going to explore the Covid-19 pandemic, in its own way. Specifically, through the lens of a massive anomaly ripping apart the galaxy and destroying everything in sight. This will prove a big test of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who has only recently found stability in her role commanding the crew of the USS Discovery.

While Star Trek: Discovery was one of the best Netflix shows internationally, it's leaving this week, and won't be there for the new season. Annoyingly, it's kind-of a Paramount Plus exclusive — something that will push users to piracy in one form or another (I got a reader from South Africa in my Instagram DMs today, and I was sorry for his lack of decent options). Also on Paramount Plus, you'll be able to watch South Park: Post Covid , once it debuts in the U.S. on Thanksgiving day.

Why do I say "kind-of" a Paramount Plus exclusive? Den Of Geek reports that "Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 will begin streaming on Pluto TV in the UK." The series will arrive on Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. local time.

Fortunately, Paramount Plus is on all of the best streaming devices , so no need to worry about accessing it. Unfortunately, Paramount Plus hasn't launched in wider European regions yet.

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online anywhere on Earth

Just because Paramount Plus isn't available everywhere (and it's expanding) doesn't mean you need to miss Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Watching along with the rest of the internet can be pretty easy. With the right VPN (virtual private network), you can stream the show from wherever you go.

We've evaluated many options, and the  best VPN is  ExpressVPN . It meets the VPN needs of the vast majority of users, offering outstanding compatibility with most devices and impressive connection speeds. It's also affordable at $12.95 per month. (Signing up for longer periods of six months or a year reduces the cost even more.)

ExpressVPN

Our favorite VPN service,  ExpressVPN , really shines thanks to its safety, speed and simplicity-to-use. It's also compatible with loads of devices - from iOS and Android to Roku, Apple TV and PlayStations.

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 in the US

Set phasers to ... wait, no phasers needed here. Just download Paramount Plus right now. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 episode 1 arrived at 3 a.m. ET on Thursday, November 18.

The following 10 episodes, which run through to the end of January 2022, arrive on the following Thursdays.

Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus combines what used to be CBS All Access with even more content from ViacomCBS partners. Includes Survivor and Big Brother episodes, as well as originals like Star Trek: Picard and The Good Fight.

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 in the UK

Pluto (according to Den Of Geek ) will have Star Trek: Discovery season 4, starting on Nov. 26.

If you're visiting the U.K. from the U.S., and want to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 when it airs on Paramount Plus, you can simply use one of the best VPN services, such as ExpressVPN , to make it seem like your device is back home.

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 in Canada

Canadians can watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 with a subscription to Crave . Episodes should be arriving at the same time as the U.S.

Crave has a 7-day free trial. After that, the Movies + HBO package costs $19.98 CAD per month.

If you're an American traveling abroad and want to use your Paramount Plus subscription, you'll need to look into the best VPN services .

How to watch Star Trek: Prodigy in Australia

Well, this is awkward. We thought that since Australia has Paramount Plus , our friends down under would be able to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4. A reader report explains we assumed wrong . Australians are also waiting on this series to launch. Poor form, Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 characters and cast

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets
  • Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly
  • Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Cleveland "Book" Booker
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal

How to watch Star Trek Discovery Season 4 in the UK with Pluto TV

Boldly go where you've not gone before and sign up for Pluto TV

Star Trek: Discovery

Only a few days after learning Trekkies in the UK and parts of Europe won't be able to watch the new season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery after Netflix lost the rights to the show, Pluto TV is here to save the day – and it's free.

The latest season of Star Trek : Discovery will be available on Pluto TV, a free, no sign-up TV service from ViacomCBS, in the UK, as well as Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, from November 26, 2021.

The sci-fi series has always been exclusive to Paramount Plus , a service that's available in the US, some Latin American countries, Australia and some Scandinavian countries. But everyone else was able to watch seasons 1 to 3 on Netflix.

However, just before the new season was about to drop, a new deal meant Netflix lost rights to the show – and fans were furious. Not only was this announcement last minute, but there was also no clear answer about when they'd get to see season 4 at all – a situation that speaks to the confusing nature of streaming services in 2021.

But, luckily, the move that even Spock would have called "highly illogical" is now not an issue for UK viewers who have the option to watch season 4 of Discovery on Pluto TV, where new episodes will be shown on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm local time. Stand down, red alert.

What is Pluto TV?

If you want to watch Star Trek: Discovery but you're dragging your heels about signing up for another streaming service, don't worry. Pluto TV is a bit different.

Firstly, if you haven't heard of Pluto TV before, don't worry. It's becoming increasingly popular, but it isn't a Netflix or Amazon Prime competitor.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

Instead, it's a free, ad-supported streaming service from Viacom, the owners of MTV, Nickelodeon and more, that works on a range of devices. The good news is, you don't even need to sign-up for it. You can go to pluto.tv right now and start watching.

But it doesn't just have a different business model to Netflix, Pluto TV offers up lots of different channels of TV and movie content. However, rather than local channels – or some the ones you'd find in a standard Sky package – there are more than 100 channels, some of them quite niche.

For example, in terms of movie channels you have Horror, Sci-Fi and Thriller to choose from, among others. But there's also an entire channel dedicated to just Mythbusters and another to only fans of Sherlock. There are also some live channels and on-demand shows, too. If you suffer from decision fatigue and never know what to watch, prepare to be even more overwhelmed.

But if you like having loads of choice as well as the freedom to watch for free without signing up – Pluto TV's tagline is literally 'Drop in. Watch free' – then this could be your new favourite TV service.

To get started with Pluto TV, you can head to pluto.tv to watch it in your browser. Or download the Pluto TV app, which is available on many devices and all major platforms, including Apple devices , Google and Android devices , Amazon devices and many more.

You'll also find Pluto TV in some cool and unlikely places too, like in BigScreenVR , which shows you all of the TV service's programming on your choice of huge virtual cinema screens – some are in space and some are around a campfire – where you can watch with your friends.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 to air internationally on Pluto TV

  • Start dates

Star Trek franchise owners ViacomCBS have reacted to the fan outcry over Discovery ’s removal from Netflix.

In a surprising turnaround, Paramount owners ViacomCBS are providing an alternate way for non-North American fans to watch the latest season of Star Trek: Discovery ; in anticipation of the launch of their Paramount+ service, they pulled the show from Netflix just days before its fourth season premiered.

Star Trek news bonanza Discovery Season 4 first look

During the “transition”, before the international rollout of Paramount+, fans can catch up with Captain Michael Burnham via the free-to-air streamer Pluto TV.

Here’s the announcement:

To all of the International Star Trek: Discovery fans: we hear you. We love this series too. We love it for the incredible cast, the hardworking crew, the imaginative storytelling, the groundbreaking, diverse characters who bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. Star Trek has always put its fans first. We want to do the same.

They go on to list the countries where the show can be seen on Pluto TV, offering a three-month discount on Paramount + too (where available). The full details are on the Official Star Trek website .

The first two episodes of Season 4 will debut on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi Channel on Fri 26 th November at 9PM. Subsequent episodes will drop weekly at the same time after that, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

If you’re not familiar with Pluto TV, it’s available here and via NOW and Roku devices in the UK. It’s also on Amazon Fire devices, iOS, Android and Samsung TV Plus.

Pluto TV is what’s termed a FAST service, that’s Free Ad-Supported Television. A Viacom acquisition in 2019, prior to the CBS merger, it’s fair to say that hosting Discovery for a season will do the streamer no harm at all. Primarily, the service runs old content over a range of linear channels – including one devoted to Baywatch! It also holds a varied back catalogue of films.

We’re fighting (and losing) the urge to be rather cynical about this announcement; against a fan backlash, this is a quick fix but hardly the natural home for a high-profile show like Discovery . Providing a linear broadcast might assuage some fans, but it’s not really a replacement for the convenience of accessing episodes on demand via Netflix.

Should you still want that flexibility, you’re welcome to pay for it of course. Season 4 is also being made available to buy via digital platforms in some countries, including the UK, Germany and France, from the 26 th November too.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4, Episode 8 review: A not-awful installment for its TV return

Burnham is made the central figure once again in a race for precious isolynium

Michael Burnham receives a reprimand in the

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 4, episode 8

It's been six weeks since we last saw the crazy antics the crew of the USS Discovery and we were left with something of a cliffhanger as Book (David Ajala) and Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) departed the Discovery without authorization to build a bomb to destroy the dark matter anomaly and at the very least, risk provoking unknown species 10-C.

Then, the teaser we saw at the end of that episode for the second half of the season offered glimpses of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in a Numidian Prime -style gambling den, Lt. Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) engaging in a bit of underground bareknuckle boxing and even what looks like Cmdr. Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) in a Starfleet uniform. And we saw some of that in this latest " Star Trek: Discovery " installment, entitled "All In," on the streaming platform Paramount Plus .

The recap, thankfully, is made up of only the good bits from the season so far and having thus been spared a reminder of how slow the so-called primary plot has been, we're actually quite excited. If you want to get caught up on "Discovery" since it's been awhile since the break, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for details.

We've mentioned in the past that in order to write these reviews, each episode of "Star Trek," "Star Wars" or whatever it might be, is watched on average four or five times. This is then used as a benchmark, in addition to factoring in first impressions, then determining how enjoyable an episode might be upon repeat viewing… Or how excruciatingly painful it is and what "Clockwork Orange"-like extreme measures must be undertaken to secure myself to the sofa in order to endure it all over again. Simply put, if the bad bits outweigh the good bits, then it might be time to get the eye clamps out.

And unlike at least a few episodes before the mid-season break, this one does indeed become more enjoyable the more you watch it. We begin exactly where we left off and all hell is breaking loose as everyone is struggling to work out what's just happened. Regardless with what you might think about other aspects of this episode and we'll get to those, the dialogue in this installment is well-written and we see a great example of that straightaway as President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) gives both Burnham and Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) a reprimand. It's effective and well written and sets a standard that continues through the entire episode.

The President instructs Burnham not to chase Book as she's too close to the problem, which predictably sets up what's obviously going to happen. Although Vance is the one who indirectly encourages her to go off-mission, which adds just a soupçon of intrigue to an otherwise overused "Discovery" formula. However, the quality of dialogue continues and the interaction between Burnham and Vance is convincing.

"There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and...boronite!"

By now you've probably recognized Shawn Doyle (who plays Ruon Tarka) from "The Expanse." He portrayed Sadavir Errinwright, the former Undersecretary of the United Nations who conspired with Jules-Pierre Mao to weaponize the Protomolecule. His character here is disappointingly similar to the one he played in "The Expanse," so hopefully the writers will allow Doyle to show more of his range before the end of the season.

Turns out he can't just, you know, build the bomb. No, he needs the isolynium first. And that pretty much sets up this whole episode; it becomes a race of sorts to find and buy any and all amounts available of this precious resource.

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' pulls a handbrake turn at maximum warp

Both Book and Burnham use old contacts from their…er, time spent working as couriers and this would be a great throwback to what little we saw of that, in the early days of Season 3. In fact, the premiere episode, " That Hope Is You, Part 1 " was one of the best episodes we've ever seen and it continued for a short while at least, until the third season took a nosedive into absurdity in the second half.

It all feels like it was a dynamite idea on paper, but the execution fell a little flat. We're made to believe like Book and Burnham had a career together as couriers, but they were only enjoying this dynamic lifestyle for just one year before Discovery showed up and ruined everything. Can you imagine how cool it would've been to have had a whole season focusing mainly on Book and Burnham's exploits as legal/illegal buyers and sellers, intergalactic wheelers and dealers..?

Burnham is able to predict where Book will have to go to secure as much isolynium as he needs: Haz Mazaro's Karma Barge. And this is where this episode again feels like it's borrowing from that amazing Season 3 opener, except it's just not produced as effectively. The production design isn't as ambitious, the characters aren't as interesting and it's ultimately a wasted opportunity.

Whenever a sci-fi show attempts the backwater, drinking/gambling den, off-world-underworld set piece, it truly separates the men from the boys and when it's done well, it makes a bold statement. "The Expanse" nailed it, every time and so has the live-action "Star Wars" shows, but it's something "Star Trek" has rarely done well with. That said, this isn't terrible…it's just not as good as it really could've been.

Lt. Cmdr. Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) has an opportunity to show off her mixed martial arts skills

The venue for this showdown of sorts is a very interesting idea and credit where credit is due, hats off to the team for coming up with this one. Owned by a character called Haz Mazaro (played by Daniel Kash and probably the best thing in this episode), the Karma Barge is a large, paddle wheel-driven surface vessel that serves as an off-grid hub for gambling and black market businesses. It's constantly in motion and forever sails the Porathian Ocean disguised inside a hologram of a monstrous sea creature.

And a particularly nice touch is that the approach to the Karma Barge through the sea monster is not shown when Book and Tarka arrive, but instead saved for effect when Burnham and Lt. Cmdr. Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) show up. Yes indeed, it's Owosekun's time to shine and frankly she hasn't had an opportunity like this since the second season's best episode by far, " New Eden " (S02, E02).

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' is stuffed full of subplots and side stories

The writer's on "Discovery" haven't quite managed to make the simple premise of a member of the bridge crew accompanying an away team feel natural . It used to happen all the time on "The Original Series" and later shows, but whenever it happens on "Discovery" we automatically know that person whose name you can't remember will form a significant part of the plot by way of overcompensation.

Haz Mazaro (Daniel Kash), from an as-yet unnamed alien race, is probably the best thing in this episode

Since two parties are now interested in the isolynium, the price is going up. Burnham is operating outside of Federation jurisdiction so she's unable to call for more cash. (It might have been nice to see them both being forced to change outfits because of the hostility Starfleet can sometimes attract, especially in a setting where the only law is frontier law.) Owosekun steps into a bare-knuckle boxing ring in an attempt to raise more funds. After a couple of disastrous rounds, she's ultimately and inevitably successful…by punching her opponent in the plums.

This enables Burnham et al to proceed to the next round, as it were, where she must face Book in a game of Leonian Poker. The Federation's favorite former couple team up to beat the other prospective players around the table in a scene, again , reminiscent of " That Hope Is You, Part 1 " where Burnham is given a truth serum by an inept Orion and an equally incapable Andorian in the market place of Mercantile on Hima. It's great to see more of Martin-Green's range beyond Emotional and Very Emotional and she's clearly having fun with it.

Related: The gravity of the situation becomes clear in 'Star Trek: Discovery'

With the two outsiders gone, it's Burnham v Book, so naturally they go all in with Book being the eventual winner. Throughout the this whole set piece, the Starfleet captain obviously tries to convince the Kwejian to do the right thing, and obviously he resists, but it's dealt out, so to speak, in manageable quantities, making it feel infinitely more natural.

Remember this fresh and fun scene from the Season 3 premiere episode,

Upon returning to Federation HQ, the president is ready to give Burnham both barrels for bungling the recovery of the isolynium, until the Discovery's captain reveals her cunning plan. Knowing she would probably lose, she cleverly placed a tracking device on the actual isolynium, so now they can track Book's ship.

However, down in engineering Stamets (Anthony Rapp) has made a startling discovery. Turns out it's all about the boronite; when the dark matter anomaly disappears, in the area of space where it was, there are no residual traces of any boronite, like there are other elements.

Related: The 'Discovery' Season 4 premiere is not one of its strongest starts

In the "Star Trek" universe, boronite is an element that forms naturally in extremely small quantities. However, a sufficient amount could be synthesized into some of the most powerful substances in existence, such as the Omega molecule (introduced in the "Voyager" episode "The Omega Directive" S04, E21). The Borg once used a quantity of boronite to synthesize a single Omega molecule, but were unable to repeat the experiment as they never found another source.

There's an attempt at a heartfelt scene between Stamets and Culber, but sadly, it feels a little contrived

They draw the conclusion that the dark matter anomaly is mining the mineral. And, as Vance remarks, "If the DMA is their mining equipment, we can only imagine what their weapons are like." And so it becomes even more imperative that Book and Tarka be stopped.

This episode is nicely paced throughout and it feels like a lot unfolds without any sense of being rushed or that too much takes place – and that is down to constant, consistent care being paid to pacing. Yes, it flies close to the sun with the occasional cliché, but it manages to get away with only singeing its wings.

There are some thoughtful touches, like the playing cards featuring different species of aliens from "Star Trek" plus there's a touching scene between Stamets and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) in an attempt to highlight the frustration and anxiety that the crew face.

Rating: 7½ /10

The first eight episodes of Season 4 of "Star Trek: Discovery" are available to watch now on Paramount Plus in the US and CTV Sci-Fi or Crave TV in Canada. Countries outside of North America can watch on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. Season 2 of "Star Trek: Picard" begins on March 3, 2022 and the premiere season of "Strange New Worlds" begins on May 5, 2022.

Pocket-lint

Star trek discovery season 4 will be shown outside us, but no catch-up.

Paramount has seen sense and made a deal with Pluto TV to show new episodes in the interim.

There was uproar when Paramount pulled Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix in the UK and Europe. And, when it was revealed that season 4 wasn't to appear outside the US until 2022, Twitter had a meltdown.

While US viewers would get to see it from its November release, everybody else would have to wait for it to appear on Paramount+ when that streaming service expands to other regions.

Thankfully, Paramount has now seen sense and made a deal with Pluto TV to show new episodes in the interim.

That means, fans in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will be able to watch the new series of Star Trek: Discovery through the free Pluto TV app from 9pm Friday 26 November 2021. Additional episodes will drop each Friday then on.

Sadly, you'll still have to wait until the launch of Paramount+ in those countries (as part of Sky TV in many of them) to catch up with previous seasons, but it's still a nice gesture for the dedicated fanbase.

In addition, the date when episodes hit Paramount+ outside the US has been brought forward. All countries that can already access the service will also get new episodes from 26 November. A new member promotion is offering 50 per cent off to celebrate.

How to watch star trek: discovery season 4 in the uk & internationally.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 has been removed from Netflix, and will now release in the U.K. and internationally on the Pluto TV streaming service.

Here's how to watch  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 in the U.K., and in other international territories. International audiences were shocked when ViacomCBS pulled  Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix — just days before season 4 was due to launch. They'd reached an agreement with Netflix that saw the streaming giant surrender its rights for the show, with ViacomCBS planning to stream it exclusively on Paramount TV+ next year as part of their own streaming service's global expansion.

Although press releases from ViacomCBS attempted to spin this as a good thing,  Star Trek: Discovery 's fate was a blow to the fandom  — especially in the U.K., which has a particularly vibrant fanbase. The announcement was made just three days before season 4's release, with past seasons vanishing from Netflix at midnight of that same day. No doubt ViacomCBS hoped  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 could be the flagship for their streaming service's rollout, in a similar way to  The Mandalorian 's performance for Disney+. But the way they had done this burned any goodwill. The international fanbase was outraged because they'd expected to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online in just three days' time. ViacomCBS has now backtracked, making  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 available in the U.K. and internationally through other means.

Related:  Why Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Isn't On Netflix UK

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will now stream on Pluto TV in the U.K., as well as Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Pluto TV is a free streaming service that's funded by commercials, and it's available through web browsers, Android mobiles and tablets, Apple iPhones and iPads, some smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Sticks, and Roku devices. Unfortunately, because Pluto TV is modeled on traditional cable networks, viewers can only watch  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online at 9:00 pm (local time) on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday nights; the first two episodes come out on Friday, November 26, 2021. Pluto TV does not allow recordings, but viewers who miss these showings — or prefer an ad-free experience — can also purchase the episodes on as-yet-unspecified " participating digital platforms " as they release.

Paramount+ is available in Australia, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Finland, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Sweden, Uruguay, and Venezuela.  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 streams in those countries (except Canada) from Friday, November 26, with the first two episodes releasing on that day and further episodes coming out weekly thereafter. Presumably, the series will be available on launch as ParamountTV+ expands into other territories next year. In Canada,  Star Trek: Discovery  continues to air on the Bell's CTV Sci-fi Channel, followed by streaming on Crave.

The Pluto TV release of  Star Trek: Discovery season 4 is clearly a stopgap solution, but it at least means international audiences — and U.K. viewers in particular — can watch  Star Trek: Discovery online . It remains to be seen whether this will restore the goodwill ViacomCBS burned when they pulled  Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix, but it's better than nothing because no dates have yet been given for the international expansion of Paramount TV+.

The Star Trek Stage Announced at Pinewood Toronto Studios

The stage was officially renamed during the production of Star Trek: Discovery's fifth season.

Pinewood Toronto Studios, part of the Pinewood Group, have named one of their sound stages The Star Trek Stage to celebrate one of the franchise's long-running filming locations. The announcement coincides with the release of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery , produced by CBS Studios and currently streaming on Paramount+ in the US and Canada.

The Star Trek Stage is an 18,000 sq foot stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios and was officially renamed whilst the cast and crew were filming the final scenes of the final season. Star Trek: Discovery has been based at the Studios in downtown Toronto since January 2017. The stage was used to house the Ready Room and International Federation HQ. The production also utilized the 45,900 sq foot Mega Stage and Stage 7, 9 and 12 as well as production facilities and workshops.
