Water shortage worsens as tourist influx peaks in Uttarakhand
An official of the tourism department said it was for the first time that nainital was witnessing such an unprecedented rush of tourists, primarily due to the ongoing heat wave in north indian plains..
With over 23 lakh tourists and pilgrims for Chardham yatra visiting Uttarakhand this summer season, water crisis in the state has worsened, say officials. The surge in tourist numbers has increased the water consumption, putting pressure on the limited water resources in the state.
DK Singh, general manager (incharge) of Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan in Garhwal region said a tourist coming to the state uses 40 liters of water per capita per day. “If they stay for more number of days then it gradually increases to 70 liters per capita per day. Locals are themselves struggling for water and due to summer the demand is higher than supply. Tourist influx adds to the problem,” said Singh.
As per official records, for cities the water consumption level is 135 liters per capita per day in the state. For rural areas, the consumption level is 70 liters per capita per day.
“Locals are already living with deficit and they are forced to live with the current supply as we cannot generate water sources. Taking into account the heavy tourist influx in places like Mussoorie, we conserve water during monsoon and winters in two balancing reservoirs built near Gun Hill,” said Singh.
Sushil Kumar Saini, executive engineer, Jal Sansthan, Mussoorie said that during the summer season demand for water becomes double the normal requirement. “We have a production capacity of 7.75 million liters per day (MLD) and the demand is for 14 MLD for the three summer months, especially with tourists coming in. Otherwise, without tourists the demand is only 7.85 MLD, which is barely 0.10MLD more,” said Saini. Over 1,90,030 tourists have visited Mussoorie this year since the starting of May.
In Nainital, with increase in water consumption during the peak tourist season, the district administration had to stop curtailing the daily withdrawal of water from Nainital lake. The administration decided to increase the water intake from the Himalayan Lake incrementally by half a million litres per day (MLD) after every 15 days during the peak season depending on the water requirement.
Santosh Upadhyay, executive engineer Jal Sansthan, Nainital, said given the increase in water consumption, they have increased the daily water intake from the lake from 8 MLD in April to 10.5 MLD now. “Roughly 2.5 million litres per day is being withdrawn from the lake now compared to April”, he said.
Arvind Gaur, district tourism officer Nainital said it was for the first time that Nainital was witnessing such an unprecedented rush of tourists, primarily due to the ongoing heat wave in North Indian plains. “Since May 20, around 3 to 4 lakh tourists have visited Nainital. The rush is so much that it has become difficult even to walk properly on the Mall Road”, he said
Tourists HT spoke to said they were aware of the water problems in Nainital due to the huge rush of tourists. “In our hotel, we had to pay separately for a bucket of hot water. The hotel staff said it was being done as there was limited water supply and they didn’t want guests to waste water”, said Dhrupad Rai, who had come from New Delhi.
Peter Smetacek, co-founder of Butterfly Research Centre, Bhimtal, said the basic problem for such increasing stress on natural resources of the Himalayan Hill stations is because of the flawed policy for tourism promotion in the state. “Instead of diversifying tourism across the geography of the state, tourism is being selectively promoted for some areas like Char Dham, Mussoorie or Nainital”, he said.
This year till now, 17,83,273 pilgrims have visited the Chardham Shrines since May 7 and 73,217 at the Sikh Shrine of Hemkund Sahib since it opened on June 1.
Smetacek said if they want to lessen the stress on fragile Himalayan hill stations, they will have to promote tourism away from these in villages with the promotion of home-stays. “That way there will be no stress on one particular tourist destination”, he said.
The changing demographics of the small Himalayan hill stations coupled with a huge influx of tourists has put stress on the lake. Last year the administration decided to curtail withdrawal of water from the Naini Lake to 8 million litres per day from the earlier 18 MLD. Experts have been repeatedly expressing serious concern over increasing stress and overexploitation of Nainital Lake, which is already under threat due to drying up of its source lake- Sukhatal.

Nainital has a distinct identity with a wide variety of natural, rural and urban landscape of mountainous character. The focal point of the settlement, the natural lake of Nainital, continues to draw scores of visitors every season. In Nainital, presently, tourism is prevailing as ‘mass tourism’ with a mass appeal. The mass scale of tourism in an ecologically sensitive area is bound to be a delicate matter. The physical area around the lake is highly restricted bound by the slopes of surrounding ridges. The scope of expansion of the town seems to be highly improbable, until and unless it seeks to expand beyond the Municipal boundary. The vital question arises how to make tourism sustainable in this small but promising town which is practically perched on the local catchment area of a natural lake. Today, Nainital is looking for a development model which should uphold its position in the tourism market as well as save its ecological integrity; because in face of any ecological eventuality this mountain habitat will go into irretrievable loss.

Nainital in Uttarakhand is one of the most popular hill stations of India. It is famous for its lake, after which it is named. The town has a population of 41,400 (2011 est.)
Understand [ edit ]
Set amidst the towering peaks of the Kumaon Hills, the lake resort of Nainital has a lot to offer. From boating to feeding animals at the zoo; from picnicking on the hills to exploring Jim Corbett's home, Nainital has all that you could hope for in a hill station.
Nainital is set in two parts, Tallital and Mallital, with the lake separating them. Tallital is the southern side of the lake, while Mallital consists of the northern upper reaches. The town was destroyed during the Landslip of 1880, and later rebuilt by the British. It is renowned for its lake, bird's-eye views, and prestigious educational institutions.
Nainital, also known as Lake District of Uttarakhand, is named after the goddess Naina Devi. It is located around Naini Lake in Uttarakhand. If you are planning to feel tourism of Nainital, the best time to visit there in between May to July, the summer time in India.
The weather in Nainital is quite pleasant. Summers are hot and temperatures may reach 32 °C. During winter, temperatures may be sub-zero. The town receives snowfall during December and January.

Flying into Nainital is the fastest way to reach the hill station. Nainital is served by PantNagar Airport ( PGH IATA ), located about 2 hours away. It is one of the least busy airports in the country, handling only 6 scheduled flights a week.

Get around [ edit ]

- There are a few cycle rickshaws in town. Rates are fixed at ₹20 from one end of the mall to the other. They can only pick and drop passengers at the ticket booths of either end.
- However, there is no better way to explore Nainital than on foot. The mall has smooth pavements, making it extremely pedestrian-friendly. During the summer season, entry is denied on the mall from 6 to 9PM, making the road a pedestrian's dream. The town is fairly small and there are some very interesting shops and emporiums in the mall, making the walk a pleasure.
- The months of March, April, May and June starting are best to see the lake’s flora in full bloom and also the perfect time to enjoy a boat ride. Months of November and December are also popular with tourists who want to enjoy fresh snowfall and chilly weather.

Manaskhand Corridor Yatra: Discover Kumaon’s ancient temples [Details]
Manaskhand corridor yatra: explore kumaon's ancient temples; learn about dates, train details, itinerary and more.
Pithoragarh: Uttarakhand tourism department in collaboration with the Indian Railways will start the ‘Manaskhand Corridor Yatra’ next week to popularise the ancient temples of the Kumaon region, officials said on Saturday.
A special train will be run from Pune to Tanakpur in Pithoragarh district for the yatra from April 22, District Tourism Officer (DTO) Kirti Chand Arya said. The train will carry over 600 pilgrims in two batches to the famous temples of ‘Manaskhand’, a phrase used in ancient Hindu scriptures to refer to the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
The tour package to Manaskhand temples will be for 7 days and 6 nights, the DTO said. The pilgrims will have to alight the train in Khatima, about one km from Tanakpur from where they will be taken to the temples by road, he said.
One train will start from Pune on April 22 and reach Khatima on April 24, Arya said, adding that another train carrying pilgrims will start from Pune on April 24 and reach Khatima on April 26.
Khatima has been chosen as the last stoppage as it has better facilities, such as hotels, compared to Tanakpur, the officer said.
The devotees will be taken to temples and other religious places of Tanakpur, Champawat, Pithoragarh and Almora as part of the tour package and briefed on the mythological significance of these temples, he said.
Visits to Baleswar, Maneswar and Mayawati temples in Champawat, Hat Kalika, Patal Bhubaneswar temples in Pithoragarh, Jageswar and Golu Devta temples at Chitai, Nanda Devi, Kasar Devi, Katarmal in Almora, Nanakmatta Sahib Gurudwara in Udham Singh Nagar and the Naina Devi temple in Nainital are part of the itinerary for the pilgrims.
