I’m a Greece expert and this is where to go on your first Greek cruise

Greece cruises are on the bucket list of many, with by ship the ultimate way to island hop this idyllic destination. Here are the best places to visit.

Words by Rebecca Hall

Those familiar with the beautiful Mediterranean country of Greece will know it has thousands of islands yet only 227 are inhabited, some home to just hundreds of inhabitants while others boast a population well into four figures.

This makes the Greek islands exceedingly varied, so what better way to experience them than to visit a few on your first Greece cruise, to gain a taster in order to come back for a longer break?

My 15 years in Greece as a travel writer means I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the islands in as much depth as possible for the likes of Rough Guides and Lonely Planet guidebooks and have been a Destination Presenter on a Celebrity Cruises sailing around the islands.

Here I narrow the dizzying choice down, highlighting some of the best destinations to help you choose the ideal itinerary for your first Greek cruise.

Athens

If you’re embarking or disembarking from the port of Piraeus in Athens [above] on your Greece cruises, be sure to allocate time to spending some days exploring this eclectic city to start or round off your cruise in style.

Aside from the world-famous Acropolis, Parthenon [below] and Acropolis museum, there are a whole host of sites to see and activities to undertake. After you’ve climbed the Acropolis hill to the Parthenon, directly below in the Plaka neighbourhood lies a small area built and designed to resemble the tiny Cycladic island of Anafi.

Anafiotika, as it’s called, is an island within the mainland and has sugar-cubed, white-washed houses similar to that found in the Cyclades island – some still inhabited – and narrow cobbled streets.

athens greece

The new National Gallery in a stand-out building is a feat of architecture in itself. Here you’ll find many paintings, sculptures and engravings from Greek artists and the occasional visiting international one.

Forty minutes from Central Athens brings you to a different world, the Athenian Riviera, itself becoming a go-to destination unto itself with five-star hotels, glittering blue flag beaches and the unique spa Lake Vouliagmeni – a natural and thermal water swimming experience with year-round temperatures of 25C.

Venture further along the Riviera to the Temple of Poseidon, the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the Aegean.

You don’t have to go far to commune with nature in Athens either. A 10-minute drive brings you to Mount Hymettus; with its pine forests and monasteries it’s a popular hiking spot at the weekend with Athenians.

Now you’re ready to embark on your Greek island cruise, where should you pick, especially as there are a plethora of islands to choose from?

Santorini Greece

It makes sense to visit the most popular islands to fulfil your first taster. Santorini is invariably always on any Greek island cruise itinerary, and with good reason.

The volcanic eruption in the 16th century forever shaped its landscape and the two main towns of Fira and Oia [above] are scattered with the famous cubed whitewashed houses clinging to the top of the cliff that overlooks the crater left behind from this eruption.

Take a boat trip out to the caldera rim for a mini hike, but do this early morning as in the summer it gets very hot.

Santorini is renowned for its wines and is thought to be Greece’s top destination for wine tourism, with over 18 wineries to choose from on a relatively small island.

Nine indigenous grapes are cultivated here and the island is famous for its growing process; as Santorini has little shelter, the vines aren’t straight, they form a basket with the grapes growing in the centre to protect them from the harsh Aegean winds.

Then, of course, there are the famous caldera sunsets, a romantic way to round off the day with a glass of wine viewing the scenery from the island or back on deck.

mykonos windmills greece

Mykonos will also undoubtedly be on your first Greek island cruise itinerary. Known as the party island for A-listers and UHNWs alike, there’s no segregation here so if partying’s your scene, you’ll no doubt find yourself rubbing shoulders with someone famous.

Yet Mykonos offers a host of activities to suit all tastes, with its labyrinthine streets, famous windmills [above] and Petros the pelican wandering around.

Take a stroll around Mykonos Town; built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the windmills are the first landmarks you’ll see when coming into the island and the views from here towards ‘Little Venice’ are breathtaking.

Mykonos’s streets were deliberately designed to confuse invading pirates, however, all streets eventually lead to the port so enjoy a stroll and sip a coffee at one of the many cafes along the waterfront.

delos lions greece cruises

No trip to Mykonos is complete without a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage island of Delos, only a 20-minute ferry ride away.

Ancient Greek mythology maintains it’s the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Zeus’s twins conceived through an affair with a mortal. Delos was a safe haven for the mortal to give birth, away from the jealousy of Zeus’ Goddess wife.

Whether you believe in Greek mythology or not, wandering through these ancient ruins [above] gives you an idea of the importance of this island — constructed as a testament to the Gods.

If relaxing on a beach is more your preference, head to Agios Sostis, an unspoilt, quiet beach with a church and small restaurant.

street of the knights rhodes greece cruises

Further south brings you to Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese chain and a very popular cruise stop. Your ship will dock within walking distance of Rhodes Old Town, built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.

It’s one of Europe’s oldest living old towns where people still live and work behind the great castle walls, so spend time shopping for your handmade leather goods and sipping a coffee as you wander the labyrinthine cobbled alleyways.

It’s easy to soak up the atmosphere of the past here and there’s so much to do. The Palace of the Grand Masters the original residence of the Governor of Rhodes during Medieval times – is a must-visit.

Twenty-four rooms are open to visitors, including the Throne room where you’ll find massive fireplaces and ancient antiquities. It’s a very Game of Thrones-esque experience.

The Palace is situated at the end of the Street of the Knights [above], an ancient street with inns dedicated to the knights who served under the Grand Master.

Rhodes Greece greek island cruises

Walk the moat around the castle, or for a bird’s eye view of the Old Town to gain a different vantage point of the ancient city and its colourful houses and minarets, take a walk atop the castle walls.

If time allows then head an hour south to the Acropolis of Lindos [above], once a small fishing village and now a popular place to visit in the summer with the gorgeous St. Paul’s Bay, overlooked by the 4th century B.C Acropolis with the Temple of Athena on a 116-metre high cliff.

These are just scratching the surface of where you can visit on your Greek island cruise itinerary. Other places to consider are Chania and Heraklion in Crete, both famous for their Venetian ports and lighthouses and maybe further afield to Limassol in Cyprus.

Companies that offer Greek island cruises include Celestyal Cruises and Variety Cruises – both Greek companies that focus on the islands and some mainland destinations – as well as Virgin Voyages , Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and Starclippers, to name but a few.

These protocols on board will be clearly set out and easy to follow. We will continue to work with the highest levels of government and scientific advisors to continually review our health protocols.

Do P&O Cruises require me to book a travel insurance?

It is mandatory for all UK guests to have suitable travel insurance cover in order to cruise with P&O Cruises to cover unforeseen incidents before your holiday, while travelling or while you’re away.Normally travel insurance would cover the cancellation of your holiday, stolen belongings and medical treatment. Please make sure you have the right level of cover and that your insurance provides full cover for a cruise holiday, the full length of the trip, all of the destinations you’re visiting  (you can choose a worldwide cover to be sure). Also, you should ensure that your policy includes cover for travel, cancellation and curtailment, you must declare any pre-existing medical conditions, and read each policy thoroughly to make sure you have the cover you could need. When travelling with P&O Cruises, your insurance has to include medical and repatriation cover of £2 million minimum that includes cover for emergency evacuations and medical expenses related to COVID-19. On the day of embarkation, your insurance documents will be checked at the terminal. Boarding will be denied, at your own expense, for anyone without appropriate cover.

What is a P&O cruises future cruise credit?

A P&O's Future Cruise Credit (FCC) is when P&O Cruises turn the money you’ve paid towards a holiday into a credit,  almost like a voucher. This means your holiday fund stays where it is and can be used towards a future cruise. All guests with a holiday cancelled due to the cruise line's extended pause will automatically receive a 125% FCC.  This can be used on any new booking made before 31 December 2021 for any holiday on sale during that period. Once you have received an email to say you can use your FCC online, you can use it against any new cruise booking and can also redeem FCCs for all guests travelling on the booking. Please contact us for more information and help regarding Future Cruise Credits. Our agents will be happy to help you.

From Southampton:The ship will depart Southampton for sailing int the late afternoon (approximately 4-5pm). Specific departure times will be confirmed once you are on board.Passengers should ensure they check in as per the time provided on their E-Ticket to ensure they are on board to attend a safety drill which is carried out prior to departure. There are recommended check in times stated on your ticket, which not only help to avoid congestion at the terminal but also ensures that everyone has time to check in and embark the ship and locate their cabin prior to departure. The time that check in closes will be also stated on your ticket and travel summary documents, which are available from the Cruise personaliser approximately five to six weeks prior to departure. From Ports of Call:The departure time will depend on your itinerary. Specific departure times will be confirmed once you are on board. Typically the ship docks to allow either a full day (from approximately 8am - 4pm) or half a day (approximately 8am - 1pm / 1pm - 4pm) in the port. These are approximate timings, you may have a shorter or longer duration in port.

Are P&O Cruises still running and what P&O cruises have been cancelled?

Yes, P&O Cruises are still running and operating but please note that  Arcadia, Aurora, Azura and Ventura scheduled cruises have been cancelled until the end of August 2021 and on Britannia and Iona until the end of September 2021. But instead P&O Cruises are doing short Mini UK cruises in Summer 2021 that you cannot miss out on!

Are P&O cruises All-Inclusive?

No, P&O Cruises are not what we would call an All-Inclusive cruise line that includes all drinks on board but you will always enjoy full board, spectacular entertainment, children's clubs on family-friendly ships, luxury accommodations, great service and more. Drinks at the bar have an extra cost but prices are competitive and you can book a P&O drink package onboard.

Romance and culture await on a Greek Island cruise

It’s no wonder the Greek Islands have always been a perennial favorite of travelers. Greece is a magical, romantic destination where you can wander alongside stunning coastlines, explore the ruins of ancient cultures, and dine on fresh Mediterranean cuisine all in one vacation.

On one of our luxury Greek Island cruises, explore far-flung beaches, drift out to sea on catamarans and kayaks, and duck into tiny tavernas where you can eat and drink like a local. From the sun-soaked stone buildings in Santorini to the white-sand beaches that beckon in Mykonos, a Greece cruise is the best way to experience the captivating Greek Islands.

Greek Island Cruise Highlights

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

There is no shortage of unforgettable experiences to be had in Greece. Its seascapes and cityscapes are wondrous, from the mighty ruins of the Acropolis to the buzzing, modern city center of Athens. Visit an olive farm in Crete, or embark on a tour of Mykonos Town’s organic wineries. Or, take an intimate, exclusive cooking lesson on how to make local favorites in Santorini’s main square, right in the middle of it all.

Ancient History

Greece is a world-renowned destination for history buffs. Stroll through the Acropolis and marvel at human achievement, or visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to study Aegean and Cypriot artifacts. Examine the 400-year-old remains of a town buried under volcanic ash outside of Santorini. Explore the historic forts of Corfu, or hop on a boat ride to Delos, said to be the birthplace of Apollo.

Natural Wonders

Discover Elafonisi Beach, a paradise of pink, powdery sand and shallow waters off the island of Crete. Take an unforgettable cruise through the impressive Corinth Canal on a shore excursion in Athens. Stand in awe at the base of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the fabled home of the Greek gods. In Zakynthos, don’t miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Shipwreck Beach, which often tops best-of lists.

Featured Ports

Santorini, Greece

Attractions to see during your Greek cruise

Travel dreams come true with a Greek cruise. Greece, the land of the Gods and Olympias, is a true Eldorado for all cruise fans. The islands off the mainland are each something special and if you enter the port of Piraeus , you will arrive at a place steeped in history, which will also enchant you.

In Greece's capital, Athens , you will encounter the extraordinary remains of the former city fortress. The Acropolis of Athens is the most famous representation of an ancient citadel. The thick pillars look particularly beautiful in the evening when they are staged with indirect light. At the foot of the lofty hill on which the fortress sits, you can visit the Acropolis Museum. Backgrounds and historical events around the fortress  are impressively recreated here. --> Athens cruises

On the Greek island of Corfu , you can visit the city of the same name. Venetian, French and British rulers once had the island in their power before it fell to Greece. Visit the Old Fortress , whose outer walls are reminiscent of the Venetians, the buildings inside, however, reflect the time of the British. To understand the lives of farmers in Corfu, take a tour to the deserted village of Paleó Períthiain where farmers once lived. Today it is a museum village and gives an insight into the difficult living and working conditions in the past. --> Corfu cruises

An absolute highlight of any Greek cruise is its pearl Santorini . The group of islands, located in the southern Aegean Sea, was created about 1,500 years ago as a result of a volcanic eruption of volcanic lava. Perched high on the rocks are the typical white houses with their blue domes, still bearing witness to their unique history. Santorini invites every cruise visitor to linger. Climb the hills either on the back of a mule or take the cable car quite comfortably. Once at the top you can enjoy yourself in cafes, restaurants, shops, churches, temples or small chapels. --> Santorini cruises

One of the most popular destinations is Crete - the largest island in Greece . Land in Heraklion or Chania and discover the multitude of cultural attractions the island has to offer. Visit, for example, the ancient palace of Knossos in the North of the island. Hike in the 17 km long Samaria Gorge, enjoy a drop of wine in the taverns of the port city of Agios Nikolaos, explore the fascinating traces of the former leprosy colony on the island Spinalonga or let the ruins of Gortyn impress you. Crete is always worth a visit! --> Crete cruises

Although it is such a small village, Katakolon is one of the places most visited by cruises to Greece. From here you set off for Olympia . The ancient sites were once places to pay homage to the Olympian God Zeus and his wife Hera. Today you will find a museum with many finds from the excavations and many ancient remains.

On Mykonos your ship arrives on the party island of the Aegean Sea. The beautiful view of the sea is set by the many bars along the promenade. When the sun goes down in the evening over the sea, the party on Mykonos starts. --> Mykonos cruises

What is typical of Greece?

Tasty olives and the typical Greek meat specialties pair in Greek cuisine with many vegetables. Mostly served grilled and garnished with fresh herbs , souvlaki, gyros and Bifteki are real delights. Not to be forgotten is the Greek feta cheese, which must come from certain products and a specific region of Greece in order to be allowed to bear this name. Those who prefer sweet enjoyment should try the Greek honey. To really end up in a restaurant that offers you the benefits of Greek cuisine, choose one that belongs to a fellow countryman.

But Greece  is not just about the food. The Greek feeling includes picturesque bays, wide pine forests and historic buildings , which make clear in many places the eventful history of the country.

Popular cruise lines for Greek Island cruises

Embark on board of Azamara Club Cruises and experience the 5-star flair of Royal Caribbean 's luxurious boutique hotel-style ships. A maximum of 700 passengers can be accommodated on board and thus the ships differ from the cruise giants. This also takes you to the smaller ports on the Greek islands.

Everything is included at Seabourn . Whether you want a butler, to book a personal trainer on board or order a glass of champagne at dinner. Above all, luxury at Seabourn fulfills all your wishes and you do not have to pay extra for it.

American Style awaits you at Oceania Cruises . On the English-speaking ships you go on a journey with the highest demands - and they are fulfilled. With a casino on board, a large crew and first class cuisine.

When is the best time to travel?

While winter is taking hold in central Europe, temperatures on the Greek islands are often still around 20 ° C. This will make you feel as if you have arrived in Spring on a cruise to Greece in Winter. Note, however, that there are occasional rainfalls. In Summer, the thermometer rises. And brings almost endless sunny days. Greece has something to offer in all seasons and is therefore always recommended for a cruise.

Getting there

To the port of Piraeus you can use the many flight possibilities available from European countries. You will land at the international airport in Athens and have three different ways to reach the port and your cruise ship.

A taxi from the airport is the fastest, but also the most expensive option. The bus is cheap and also brings you directly to the port, but you have to plan a travel time of about 90 minutes. The metro is slightly faster, and offers a more comfortable journey than the bus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drink underage on a cruise .

Whether you are 18 to 20  years of age, if you are deemed underage by the cruise line rules, you will not be able to purchase any alcohol. Staff will not serve underage or anyone else attempting to purchase drinks on behalf of minors.

Anyone caught buying alcohol for minors could get into trouble if caught and, depending on the circumstances, possibly be kicked off the ship.

Can an 18-year-old Drink on Cruises With Dinner?

Most cruise line drinking rules apply to meals in the same way they do at bars and nightclubs.  This means if a person aged between 18 to 20 is deemed underage for drinking, they will not be able to order or consume wine or any other alcohol at meal times.

One exception is the British cruise line P&O Cruises which allows 16 and 17-year-olds to drink alcohol with a meal.

Can 18-Year-olds Drink Alcohol in the Cabin?

If 18-year-olds are deemed underage, they should not be by drinking in their cabins.   However, it is not unheard of for teens to smuggle or sneak alcohol to their cabins.  This is likely to go unnoticed unless the teens in question overindulge and get caught outside the cabin inebriated.

Can You Drink At 18 On a Cruise With Parental Consent

Outside of US waters, some cruise lines allow parents or legal guardians to sign a waiver giving consent for their 18 to 20-year-old to drink alcohol on board.

Parental consent in international waters is required on:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Disney cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line

Can You Drink on a Cruise at 17?

The only main cruise line which offers drinking to 17 years olds is P&O cruises which allow alcohol with a meal to anyone over 16 years of age.

In US waters, it is illegal for anyone under 21 to drink alcohol.  Departures from international waters may allow drinking from the age of 18.

Ships from Perm: cruises on the Volga

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

The Perm Territory is unique in its nature and variety of family vacation options, so it is not surprising that tourists from all over the country come here for new experiences.

cruises on the ship from Perm

Besides the magnificence of the Ural Mountains, the beauty of the Volga, Kama and many other large and small rivers, this area is rich in cultural, architectural and historical monuments. It will be interesting to go to Perm on vacation or for a weekend both for fans of outdoor activities and for those who like a quiet contemplative pastime. Boat cruises from Perm along the Volga are very popular. Both Russians and foreign tourists are happy to go on a river trip.

It is not for nothing that the Volga is called a mighty river, because it is one of the longest waterways in the world, on the banks of which ancient and modern cities stand in the arms of magnificent Russian nature.

Cruise ships from Perm run in different directions, making it possible to choose the most interesting water excursion. The routes provide an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the Volgaopen spaces, swim along narrow rivers, admire the picturesque landscapes, get acquainted with the history of this area and see the ancient cities of Russia with their ancient monuments and colorful curiosities.

All ships from Perm, despite their external similarity, have their own characteristics and their own excursion routes. Each offers guests an individual entertainment program on board. Several ships are currently active. Summer is the best time to travel, but other times of the year the cruise will bring a lot of pleasure.

The ship "Kozma Minin" is ready to ride everyone, even during the day, even at night. A short walk along the Kama or a week-long trip to Valaam, Kizhi and the cities of the Golden Ring - everything for tourists!

The route of the ship "Ural", which many people know under the name "Taras Bulba", will entertain with a cruise in the direction of Astrakhan, Akhtuba, St. Petersburg and other equally exciting routes.

The ship "Mikhail Kutuzov" is famous for its weekend tours and long cruises along the Golden Ring of Russia, to Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan. The river route includes calls to Usolye, Cherdyn, Tchaikovsky, Berezniki.

Beautiful ship “A. Fadeev will please the most popular destinations: Nizhny Novgorod, Kizhi, Valaam, Yekaterinburg, Astrakhan.

The motor ship "Anatoly Papanov" appeared in the local water spaces not so long ago, but has already become very popular. Not the last role is played by panoramic cabins with large windows for the widest possibleoverview and variety of cruise itineraries.

The ship "Kapitan Pushkarev" offers its cozy cabins for weekend tours, week-long and longer trips along traditional routes from Perm to Ulyanovsk and Kazan or along the Golden Ring of Russia.

Motor ship Perm Astrakhan

Boat cruises along the Volga are relatively inexpensive entertainment for the weekend and a fairly economical option for a vacation. The ticket price depends on the duration of the tour, its content, the level of the selected cabin, and the ship itself. Almost everywhere passengers are offered attractive discounts on tickets for children.

Those who dream of going along the Volga from Perm to Moscow, Kazan, Volgograd or Yelabuga, the ship "N. V. Gogol will gladly accept on board. You can choose it for a trip to Astrakhan: the excursion program includes a visit to the famous capital of the Don Cossacks - Akhtuba. Tourists love the motor ship Perm-Astrakhan (a route from one city to another) called "Native Russia". Its deck is also not empty during courses to Moscow, Taganrog, the village of Starocherkasskaya, Azov, St. Petersburg.

The last two ships offer the most economical prices for their tours along the Volga from Perm. If you're looking for an inexpensive yet action-packed cruise, they're the perfect choice. In addition to the above ships, at the Perm pier you can meet handsome men with the names "Pavel Bazhov", "Fyodor Gladkov" and "F. I. Panferov, whichprovide equally interesting river trips and are always happy to meet new passengers.

Motor ships from Perm

Tourists will have to make a choice in favor of one of the ships, based on their own preferences, the route direction of the ship and the time of its departure from the port. Someone travels on a steamboat for the first time, and someone once again decided to relax on the expanses of their favorite river. Many have long decided on their favorite ship, while others are striving for new experiences on the deck they have never been before.

All ships departing from Perm are equipped with cozy cabins of different levels of comfort. On board you can count on high-class service, three meals a day, attentive service, the opportunity to freely walk on deck and visit public areas on board, enjoy the opening landscapes and entertainment activities.

Some river excursions, in addition to the standard list of services, include in the price of tickets an overland continuation of the journey, for example, in St. Petersburg. Or from the coast of Yaroslavl, tourists will be taken to Rostov-Veliky, Vologda, Sergiev Posad and the city of Myshkin. Quite often, cruises to Astrakhan from Perm provide for entry into the Volga delta. All programs are well thought out, so you are guaranteed a great trip.

Cruise ships from Perm are an exciting vacation for the whole family. Regardless of the company and age of vacationers, the trip will be remembered for a lifetime as one of the most interesting and amazingadventure.
