How to Get from Bordeaux Airport to Central Bordeaux?

The Bordeaux-Merignac Airport is only 13 km or 8 mi away from the city.

There are a few ways to reach the city centre from the airport: tram, bus shuttle, taxi, Uber, and a private transfer .

Tram – €1.80

Take tram A into the city from tram stop located in front of the arrivals terminal between Hall A and Hall B of the airport. You can buy a magnetic ticket at the machine right by the tram stop.

I also like to use the TBM app to pay for my transport tickets in Bordeaux. Preload tickets on the app using your credit card.

As you enter a tram or a bus tap your ticket at one of the screens marked TBM. There is no extra charge for luggage.

The tram will take you approximately 40 minutes Get off at Centre Commercial Mériadeck or Palais de Justice to go to the historic centre.

If you need to transfer to another tram or a bus, the transfers are free for 1 hour. Remember to tap on as you transfer.

If you plan to use Bordeaux public transport during your stay, consider the Bordeaux City Pass which includes unlimited use of trams and buses in Bordeaux.

3D Direct Shuttle – €8.00

This direct bus will pick you up by Hall B of the airport and take you to the railway station, Gare St. Jean for just 30 minutes.

The air-conditioned coaches leave every half an hour. The company offers free wi-fi onboard, free luggage service, and free rides for children under 5.

Uber is running in Bordeaux. It might cost you€25 to €40 to get to the city center.

Some streets in the central part of Bordeaux will be closed for Uber and taxis.

Taxis leave from Hall A of the airport. €30 to €45 per ride.

Private driver

Your private driver will meet you at the arrivals hall and take you to your accommodation in Bordeaux or the surroundings starting from € 90 euros.

This option is optimal for larger groups, families with kids, or a lot of baggage.

1.1- Tickets available for sale

The tickets available for sale on the website are as follows:

Full price unit ticket From Airport > Train Station or From Train Station > Airport

Title open to all
Allows you to make a trip for one person, at the date and direction reserved. The ticket is valid for the day.

Reduced unit ticket From Airport > Train Station or From Train Station > Airport

Accessible to over 60 years old, under 26 years old, families traveling with 3 or more children, groups of more than 6 people traveling together and staff with an airport badge.
Allows you to make a trip for one person, at the date and direction reserved.
Presentation to the driver of a proof of identity, a valid identity card or a family record book.
The ticket is valid for the day.

By using the Bordeaux airport shuttle online shop, you can order a ticket online : the full fare unit ticket from the airport to the train station, the full fare unit ticket from the train station to the airport, the reduced unit ticket from the airport to the train station and the reduced unit ticket from the train station to the airport.

The purchase of tickets cannot be finalised without the acceptance by users of these general terms and conditions of sale.

1.2- Specific conditions of the printed ticket

1.2.1- printed ticket.

The carrier shall draw attention to the fact that tickets printed at home shall be subject to the following specific conditions :

The ticket is only valid if it is printed on white A4 paper, blank on one side, without changing the print size, in portrait (vertical) format using a laser or inkjet printer.

Good print quality is necessary. Partially printed, soiled, damaged or illegible tickets will not be accepted on board and will be considered invalid. In the event of an incident or poor print quality, the user must reprint the file.

From the moment of its creation, and even if it has not yet been printed by the user, the ticket is neither exchangeable nor refundable.

The ticket is only valid for the date, journey and route designated on the ticket. In other cases, the ticket will be considered invalid.

The ticket is personal and non-transferable. When boarding the vehicle, the holder of the ticket must show the driver a valid official identity document with photo: identity card, passport, driving licence or residence permit. The ticket must be kept by the driver and a counter-mark will be issued to the ticket holder.

Consequently, before any purchase of a ticket printed at home, the user must ensure that he has the software and hardware configuration required to print his ticket.

In the event of non-compliance with any of the rules specified above, the ticket will be considered invalid.

The prices mentioned in the orders are the prices valid for the validity period of the ticket. As soon as the user accepts the total amount of the order and makes the payment, his account linked to his bank or credit card is immediately debited and the order is registered in the carrier’s system for execution.

1.2.2- Electronic version of the ticket

The ticket can be presented to the driver via his mobile phone or tablet.

1.3- Order process

The user clicks on the “Shop” button on the home page or on the “Buy” button on the price page.
The user chooses the type of ticket according to the fare and direction of travel desired and clicks on “Add to basket”.
The user clicks on the “Date of the trip” box to display the calendar.
The user chooses the date of the trip and the number of seats desired.
The user validates his choice by clicking on “Add to cart”.
The user can buy his return ticket by choosing at the bottom of the page, and repeat the steps on the tickets page.
The user can see on the right side of the page the amount of his basket.
The user can validate his order by clicking on “View Cart” or “Checkout”.
The shopping cart is displayed and the user can check his order data.
The user continues his order by clicking on “Proceed to order”.

The user fills in his or her details (surname, first name, full address, email address (to be confirmed twice) and telephone number)
The user has the possibility to create an account by checking the “create an account” box. 1.4- Delivery of the ticket(s)

After the order and the validation of the payment, a confirmation email is automatically sent. The body of the email contains the order confirmation. The ticket(s) is attached to this email in PDF format.

The ticket(s) are sent by email and can be printed or to be presented via a phone or tablet to the driver.

The ticket is only valid on the date and direction of travel mentioned on the ticket.

1.5- Ticket control

The user must be in possession of the printed ticket or present it on their phone or tablet to travel. Partially printed, soiled, damaged or illegible tickets will not be accepted on board and will be considered invalid.

From the moment of its creation and payment, the ticket is neither exchangeable nor refundable.

The ticket is personal and non-transferable, even free of charge. The ticket is only valid for the designated date and route.

All tickets contain an invoice and order number. It is strictly forbidden to reproduce, duplicate or forge a ticket in any way. The counterfeiter, his accomplice or any person involved in this offence, in particular by using the counterfeit, will be refused access to the shuttle and may be subject to criminal and civil proceedings.

When boarding the vehicle, the user of the ticket must show the driver a valid official identity document: identity card, passport or residence permit. For the reduced fare, the user must show the driver a valid official identity document: identity card, passport or residence permit or family record book.

The rates indicated in the order are the rates valid for the period of validity of the ticket.

1.6- Terms and conditions of exchange and refund

If the user wishes to change the date of his trip, he must contact Keolis Gironde by means of the contact section of the website www.30direct.com within 24 hours before departure.

No refunds will be made unless the shuttle is not in service due to the carrier.

1.7- Absence of withdrawal periods

All tickets sold on the website are valid for the only date that is mentioned on each of them. Therefore, in accordance with the provisions of articles L 121-20-4 of the Consumer Code, users do not benefit from any withdrawal period.

Tickets are neither exchangeable nor refundable.
Customers must ensure their own safety. They must be seated and have fastened their seatbelts, otherwise they will be fined if they are checked by the police. The carrier declines all responsibility in the event of non-compliance with the wearing of seatbelts.
It is forbidden to detach and/or stand up during the entire journey.
It is forbidden to bet and distract the driver during the entire journey.

PRIORITY ACCESS

The two reserved seats are intended in priority for People with Reduced Mobility: pregnant women, the elderly, people with disability cards, visually impaired or blind people.
The bus has space for wheelchair users. The reservation of this seat is obligatory 3 days before the date of the journey at the e-mail address [email protected] .
These reserved seats do not give priority access to the bus.
There are no reserved seats on board the coaches (except for priority access).
Getting on and off is only possible at the airport and train station stops.
The carrier cannot be held responsible for delays resulting from traffic congestion (traffic, accidents), demonstrations, bad weather or in cases of force majeure.
Frequencies, timetables and travel times are given as an indication and are subject to change without notice.

The carrier does not provide infant seats. The passenger will be required to use a car seat. The responsibility of the carrier will not be engaged in any case.

Small, non-hazardous pets are tolerated on board the coach as long as they are transported in a closed basket kept on the knees.
Dangerous animals, including dogs of 1st or 2nd category, are not allowed.
Guide dogs for blind passengers are allowed.
The animal on board the bus is under the sole responsibility of its owner. It must not inconvenience other passengers, cause discomfort or defile the coach.
Any accident on board the coach must be immediately reported to the driver so that it can be taken into account by the company.
The intervention of the fire brigade is mandatory in case of bodily injury.

PROHIBITIONS AND RESTRICTIONS

In the bus, it is forbidden to smoke, consume alcohol, take food and/or drinks, inconvenience other passengers and/or the driver, damage the vehicle and its equipment, transport dangerous and illegal substances.
It is advisable to limit the use of the mobile phone and any device that may disturb other passengers (walkman, radio, laptop…), it is preferable to use a headset or earphones.
Passengers are responsible for any damage to the vehicle and other passengers caused by their actions.
Passengers are responsible for the personal belongings they keep with them on board the coach.
Any object found must be reported to the driver. The found object shall be stored at the carrier’s head office where it may be claimed by its owner. The object may be returned by appointment at one of the stops or sent by post at the expense of its owner.
Luggage must be placed in the hold and is the responsibility of the carrier. All baggage must be identified by a label stating; name, telephone number, postal address and/or valid email address.
It is strongly discouraged to put valuables in the hold. The carrier cannot be held responsible for the loss or theft of valuables placed in the hold (laptops, computers, jewellery, money…).
The carrier reserves the right to refuse luggage of excessive weight or dimension, as well as that which it considers prejudicial to the safety of the carriage.
Small luggage must be stored in the luggage rack above the seats or in the absence of a luggage rack under the seat.
The carrier declines all responsibility for loss of or damage to luggage deposited in the vicinity of the vehicle.

In case of loss / theft of luggage in the hold :

The compensatory allowance is limited to 500€ per unit of baggage subject to presentation of the following supporting documents: original purchase invoice for the lost or stolen suitcase, original purchase invoices for the contents of the suitcase, ticket for the day of the incident, a declaration of loss or theft must be filed with the appropriate services. Deteriorated luggage in the hold and not usable : the compensatory indemnity is limited to 60€ per luggage unit subject to presentation of the following proofs : original purchase invoice for the deteriorated luggage, photo of the deteriorated luggage showing the damage and the carrier’s ticket for the day of the incident. Luggage exchange : any luggage accidentally taken by the customer is his responsibility. All the costs generated by this error will be charged to the responsible customer.

In the 3 cases identified above, the customer must inform the driver immediately and must confirm the incident in writing by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt to the carrier at the address indicated below, accompanied by all the supporting documents within 3 days following the incident. If no protest is made within the stipulated time, all actions against the carrier are inadmissible.

CLAIMS / COMPLAINTS

In order to be taken into account, all claims (other than baggage) must reach the carrier within two weeks of the incident in writing accompanied by the original ticket and any other documentary evidence allowing for processing. Failure to protest within the time limits laid down will result in all actions against the carrier being declared inadmissible.

Bordeaux is at its best from May through October, when the weather warms and the days are long and sunny. How to Get Around Bordeaux

In terms of getting to Bordeaux, the simplest way is to hop on the TGV from Paris’s Montparnasse station and take it directly to Gare de Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, which takes around two hours. While you can technically fly into Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, it’s more cost- and time-efficient to take the train (not to mention, more sustainable). You can also drive here, but be warned that it can be slightly tricky to find parking downtown — you’ll want to check with your hotel to see if they have on-site spot.

Once you’ve arrived, it’s easy to rely on the public transit system (the TBM, or Transports Bordeaux Métropole), which includes bicycles and motorized scooters, an extensive bus network, river shuttles, and a tram system, all of which are navigable with the Bordeaux CityPass . The contactless card, which also includes access to 15 museums (including the pricier Cité du Vin) and a guided city tour of your choice, is a great option if you’re staying for a few days or more; it allows unlimited travel on the trams, buses, and river shuttles over 24, 48, or 72 hours (for 34 euros, 44 euros, or 50 euros, respectively). You can order it online or pick one up from the tourist office upon arrival.

While public transit is convenient, the tourist center of Bordeaux is pedestrian-friendly and you’ll spend plenty of time on foot appreciating the beauty of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region's capital.

In terms of private transportation, taxis, Uber, and other ride-share options (like Bolt, which you can download for Apple and Android) are all readily accessible.

Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD) is the international airport of Bordeaux, situated in the commune of Mérignac, some 12 km from Bordeaux city centre.

According to the statistics, the airport annually serves more than 6.5 million passengers, making it the sixth busiest airport in the country. The airport has three passenger terminals – A, B and Billi.

How to get from Bordeaux Airport to Bordeaux

Airport shuttle bus.

You can reach city centre by taking Navette Shuttle 30’ Direct which operates every day from the airport to the train station (Gare de Bordeaux St. Jean).

NOTE: The schedules change depending on the season, in the high season buses usually operate until 23:00
The price of a one-way ticket is 8€ ; people under 26 and seniors over 60 pay a reduced amount of 7€

Another possibility of getting to the train station is by taking a local (and much cheaper!) bus Lianes 1+ operated by TBM.

First bus departs from the airport at 4:45 and the last one at 00:40 (1:20 on Thu, Fri and Sat)
The bus operates on the route between Saint-Jean train station and the airport via Bordeaux Centre and Mérignac Centre.
The single bus fare costs 1.70€ , but it is probably more convenient to buy 1-day ticket which costs 4.50€ (unlimited access for the day)
The tickets can be purchased on vending machines, sales offices, or directly from driver .

Although it is not directly connected with Bordeaux Airport, St. Jean train station can be easily reached either by shuttle bus or by a local bus within 30 minutes (or less if traffic is not too crowded).

Taxi services

If you don’t want to drag around your suitcases, there are taxis waiting for you outside the Arrivals Terminal , but be prepared for waiting in case you’re visiting during the summer. Make sure they have their taximeters on when you leave the airport so you don’t get overcharged. The average cost of the ride to Bordeaux is around 30€ .

Booking the door-to-door transfer is a good alternative to taxi if you want to make sure the driver will wait for you. If your plane is late, the company will know because they monitor your flight.

The best way is to go first to Gare Saint Jean (the main bus station in Bordeaux). You can either go by shuttle bus for 8€ or by bus line 1 for 1.50€ but it takes You longer. Then at the bus station take regional TER train to Gare de Sainte-Foy-La-Grande. The travel time is around 1 hr and 20 min.

The flight from Amsterdam to Dallas was great, ok food, good service, great entertainment. But Dallas to SF was very tiring because of two hour delay inside the airplane waiting for AA paper work in 99 degrees in the sun. We got to the airport 2 hours before the flight. We waited in a line to check our bags onto the flight for an hour, even despite having checked in online, as there weren't enough self check terminals allocated to Vueling (yet loads of empty BA ones right next to them). There also weren't enough staff, making them stressed and rude. We had to try and rush through security to get to our gate, which they announced as gate 35 at first and then changed it after ten minutes with no announcement to anyone in the airport that it had changed. So we then had to rush to the correct gate to arrive just as boarding started. It was a thoroughly stressful process and one travelling couple almost missed boarding because of it. The flight boarding and the flight itself werre fine, the staff were polite, but I was dehydrated due to the airport and had to buy a bottle of water as they didn't offer free drinks.

How to do a Bordeaux wine tour by public transport: Visit vineyards with no need for a designated driver

T he day took a bit of a wobble at Margaux. Not, you understand, because I’d been sampling some of Bordeaux ’s top-quality tipples after an excellent lunch accompanied by more wine . It was because Margaux village's station was deserted out of season, with train information displayed on screens, and no clue which of the two platforms was which. Trains making the 45-minute journey to Bordeaux city seemed to run at different times from both platforms.

I had to chance it; I doubted I’d have time to cross the open tracks once the train arrived. Luckily, I guessed correctly and chugged on with my discovery of Bordeaux by public transport .

Most people don’t realise the extent of France ’s wine producing region. It would take you two and a half hours to drive the 99 miles from its northernmost to southernmost extremities. No wonder those taking a vineyard tour generally drive or go on group trips. There is, however, another way – to visit the vineyards by trains, bus and tram. And aside from the slight hiccup I experienced at Margaux, I found it surprisingly easy.

One vineyard, Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, is even within the sprawling city’s limits and can be reached by Bordeaux’s extensive tram network. What’s more, it’s designed by Philippe Starck, resembling the bow of a boat from the outside, while within the concrete wine vats are painted in different designs. (Tour with tasting costs €55).

It’s in complete contrast to the historic Chateau Pape Clement, a 25-minute bus journey away, or a 40-minute bus and train trip from the city centre. Vines were originally planted here in the 13th century by Bertrand de Got, who became Pope Clement V. Now, the grand cru classe wines lie maturing in an enormous barrel-filled room lit by chandeliers.

You can make your own version in the 19th-century chateau in a process reminiscent of a school chemistry lesson, as you experiment with different ratios of merlot to cab sav. Once I had my winning formula, I bottled it, added a cork and foil and embellished the label: Chateau Jane. (Tour with tasting costs €20, a winemaker course costs €99).

Another day, another vineyard or three, this time in the Medoc with its famous Margaux appellation. The village of Margaux isn’t the most appealing, but you’re there for the vino, and that doesn’t disappoint. I started with the biodynamic wine at Chateau Ferriere, made to beyond-organic principles and according to the cycle of the moon; they also make biodynamic tea. (Tour and tasting costs €25).

It’s just a short walk from here to Marquis de Terme, which has an elegantly modern restaurant where I polished off a superb lunch accompanied by their delicious grand cru classe. The tour here is particularly interesting because they have an eye on the future as well as the past and are constantly innovating.

The expansive cellar not only holds rows of barrels in which to age the wine, but also other containers to achieve different finishes – pearl-shaped barrels, egg-shaped concrete vats, pottery amphora and a large wooden barrel connected by wifi to record changes in temperature, pressure and oxygen. I can confirm that the finished product is particularly delicious; I finished off my tasting with rum made in Martinique from the chateau’s barrels. (Tour and three tastings costs €35).

It was at this point that my little incident at the station nearly jeopardised the 20-minute train ride followed by a 20-minute walk to Chateau Saint-Ahon. Reminiscent of buildings in Paris’s Place de Vosges, this small property is extremely family friendly, with walks through the vines interspersed by informative panels. Its wines are a decent price, with the eponymous brand coming in at €14, which you can drink accompanied by a picnic of produce bought in the shop. (Tour and tasting costs €12). Better still, because it’s in Bordeaux metropolis, once back at the station, you can take a tram back to the sprawling city.

Where you stay here depends on whether you want to be near the station in the south (where I picked) or a tram ride from it near the beautiful Place de la Bourse in the centre, with its many restaurants.

Wherever you choose, you shouldn’t go to Bordeaux without seeing the medieval hilltop village of Saint-Emilion, and enjoying some of its vintages. Happily, it’s just a 34-minute train journey away, followed by a 20-minute walk along a vine-fringed road (or an hour-long bus ride without the walk in season). The eponymous eighth-century saint lived in a cave here, which you can still visit along with the catacombs and spectacular monolithic church; Emilion’s presence drew religious communities who were adept at wine making.

They included the monks at the Couvent des Jacobins, whose atmospheric cellars are reached through a small wooden Harry-Potter style door beneath the stairs. Private visits give you time to chill out in the pretty gardens, while tastings of their organic wines are accompanied by cheese, chocolate or St-Emilion’s famous macaroons. It's much more touristy up the road at Cloitre de Cordeliers, where you can enjoy a restaurant picnic in the ruins of the cloister and take a mad tuk-tuk tour around the town and through some of the miles of underground tunnels carved out under Saint-Emilion by quarrying. The ones here are used to store sparkling wine rather than Bordeaux red, but just a five-minute walk away, Chateau Villemaurine uses some of its own network of tunnels to mature its superb grand cru classe. Tours by torchlight head into the silence of the cellars, where bats hang from the ceiling and vine roots work their way through the overhead rock. It would be hard to find a more evocative place to end my trip. (Tour and tasting costs €20).
