I definitely enjoyed the trip and events. The fjord sailings, the Troll Cars, and the Flam Railway were spectacular. The hotels were mostly nice with just a few exceptions. I wish more dinners were included because it was often late when we arrived to hotels with few options close by. The included meal buffets were great.
NOT magic, seriously boring. Over hyped - sitting on a ferry boat as it chugs along the fjords, looking out through spray soaked windows is as boring as hell. However the hotels were good, with huge self service spreads, but sadly not one offered marmalade. The food tour in Bergen should be avoided - just a repetition of the morning tour with a stodgy fish cake thrown in. A total waste of time and money. The funicular was good, but very hard to find since no signage - we just kept asking, as were the train journeys. Most annoying of all was the failure to take care of you luggage, you were left to hump it your self unless you took the option to have any large suitcase sent on in advance from Bergen to Oslo at a cost of 600 NOK, but then you lost access to its contents for 4 days. This should have been made clear in the original promotion. Oslo we enjoyed but mainly for the things we organized for ourselves. Overall a tour worth going on, but it could be made so much better with a bit of effort and more accurate and comprehensive upfront information.

Active and rewarding trip.
The fjord trek/hiking was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had! The hikes were epic, a bit challenging but that made them even more rewarding. Our CEO Vadim, was a total pro and expert in explaining all the daily events and made sure we were all taken care of. A real bond formed with our group which made the experience even more memorable. Thanks again! Leo

This is a three day tour at best. NOT a 5 day tour. The overall activities were pretty sparse and lack lustre. Suitable for people over 70. The tour leader seemed tired and couldn't be bothered. The accomodation in Tromso was not 4*. There was too much free time with not enough direction on how to spend it- I was not sure what I had paid for. The reindeer safari- seriously, feeding some reindeer, a 5 minute slowest ever ride in a sleigh, and an interesting 15 minute talk on the Sami, does not a safari make! and that took 3 hours, so a lot of hanging around, again with no direction, With other tours I have been with the guide would sit and talk with us, recommend places for dinner/lunch, suggest we all go together etc. There was absolutely none of that here. The walk around Sommarsoy, was an amble for an hour. Then no direction on how to spend the rest of the time. The campfire, was an evening in a hut, popping out to stand by a small fire occasionally. No directed talk/information etc. It was a Northern lights tour and we weren't even given a talk about the Northern Lights! An expensive waste of money on my account. Would never use this tour company again.
Mario was a wonderful group leader and very professional. He helped with all aspects of the trip and recommended options tours. We loved the sauna. Jumping into the fjord was freezing but so much fun. Would recommend this trip.

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.
This was a bit challenging for me The guide Shane was wonderful

Definitely recommend doing this if you don't have more time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Bregen. Norway is just amazing.

We had a fabulous trip up the fjords crew were lovely and it was managed very well and adjusted according to the weather conditions we thoroughly enjoyed the experience well worth it.

This trip leaves from close to the fish market in the centre of Bergen. The fast catamaran quickly gets you to the narrower part of the fjord where the views are simply breathtaking. We stood outside for much of the trip, but they sell reasonably priced hot drinks on board to warm you up. Highlights are the whirlpools and waterfalls at the far end at Mostraumen.

We had a great time with our tour guide Frode, he was excellent, very knowledgeable and great conversationalist. I highly would recommend this tour for anyone looking to enjoy great views and a delicious lunch.

Enrichment Lecturer

An MIT traveler described MIT Professor Rick Binzel as “An enthusiastic and informative leader...He stayed up late with anyone who wanted to watch the Northern Lights and the stars and planets.”

Richard Binzel is a Professor of Planetary Science and Joint Professor of Aerospace Engineering at MIT who holds a MacVicar Faculty Fellowship in recognition of outstanding teaching. As an avid sky watcher since childhood, the Northern Lights are among his most cherished and rarest sightings, making him passionate about the exquisite viewing opportunities possible from Norway. Read more about Professor Binzel .

A maximum in the Sun’s activity for generating solar flares comes only once every 11 years, and we’ll head to one of the best locations on Earth to view how that surge in the solar wind interacts with our planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere. In simple terms, we’ll come to understand how these charged particles of different energies interact at different heights to give an ever-changing display of auroral shapes and colors. Even to a seasoned observer, the Northern Lights are endlessly eerie, fascinating, and simply breathtaking.   — MIT Professor Richard Binzel

No pickup for diesel pickups

Many business operators sticking to diesel for now

Interactive: one million diesel cars registered since 2000, govt urged to give diesel subsidy to van and tour bus operators.

Feeling the pinch: There is an increase in the number of owners wanting to sell off their pickup trucks, especially among those who bought them for recreational purposes. — YAP CHEE HONG/The Star

GEORGE TOWN: It used to be an adventurer’s dream to power through highways in a three-tonne diesel pickup truck and then veer off-road in search of outdoor escapades.

Not anymore. Interviews with used car dealers show that more recreational 4x4 vehicle owners want to sell their cars – however, there are just no buyers.

The price of diesel puts that adventurer’s dream too far out for many “lifestyle users” of 4x4 vehicles, especially pickup trucks.

The situation is showing in the value and demand for used pickup trucks, especially those under 10 years old, because the RM200 monthly cash aid under Budi Madani is not likely to be approved for such diesel vehicles.

Used car dealers are reporting that more people want to sell their diesel vehicles, but almost nobody wants to buy them, said Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Associations of Malaysia president Datuk Tony Khor Chong Boon.

“Our member-dealers are in a dilemma about whether or not to accept such diesel vehicles.

ALSO READ : Many business operators sticking to diesel for now

“We are not even sure how much to price them anymore,” he said.

However, used car dealer Eric Beh, in Nibong Tebal, prefers to stand firm on his valuation.

His market in South Seberang Prai district comprises many buyers who need pickup trucks for farm work.

“I see a 20% increase in the number of owners wanting to sell off their pickup trucks, especially among those who bought them for recreational purposes.

“I drop the value by RM1,000 to RM2,000 only, because I know the market for such used trucks will stay strong,” he said.

Another used car dealer, Lee Leong Heng in Butterworth, said he had dropped the valuation of used pickup trucks by at least 10% and even more for sporty pickup trucks that are under 10 years old.

“Many owners are holding back because the value of their trucks is not attractive now.

ALSO READ : Continued watch on profiteering since diesel price floated

“No customer has walked in to look for such vehicles,” he said.

Lee clarified that the higher price of diesel had little effect on buyers who need pickup trucks for work.

“About 80% of diesel vehicle owners use them for work because pickup trucks are still the best for rough, hilly terrain, even while carrying heavy loads.

“But for those who need pickup trucks for recreation, it is a big blow.

“Pickup truck owners whose vehicles are under 10 years old may not get the RM200 cash aid under Budi Madani to subsidise their fuel purchases,” he added.

That was what happened to Chandra Purshoathaman, 45, who owns a “sports edition” seven-year-old pickup truck.

“My application for Budi Madani was rejected almost immediately,” he said.

He had bought the truck because he liked fishing and needed to carry a lot of gear.

ALSO READ : Swift process for diesel passes

“I am now looking for a cheap, used car for daily commuting. I don’t want to sell my truck because then I will have trouble carrying my gear on fishing trips,” he said.

Ahmad Zhafaran Nasib, 40, is lucky enough to get the Budi Madani cash aid.

“I use my truck for work... and yes, the new diesel price hurts,” he said, adding that he uses his vehicle for off-roading too as his hobby is kayak-fishing.

Ahmad Zhafaran, who works as a photographer, is now extra careful about acceleration.

“When you drive fast, you have to brake more often because of slower vehicles ahead. When you re-accelerate, you waste diesel and I cannot afford to waste that anymore,” he said.

He was disappointed that the government did not reduce the road tax for pickup trucks.

“It is RM835 for the yearly road tax of a 2,500cc pickup truck. Diesel used to be so much cheaper than petrol because it is easier to distil it.

ALSO READ : Domestic Trade Ministry ready to help tow truck operators in appeal for diesel subsidy, says Fuziah

“Why hasn’t the government reduced the road tax for diesel vehicles?” Ahmad Zhafaran said.

Alan Lam, 52, who drives a manual pickup truck, also said he had become more careful in his driving behaviour.

“I don’t let my truck go into overdrive anymore. I switch gears quickly because in overdrive, we burn more diesel,” he said.

Lam’s truck is 16 years old, and he received the monthly RM200 Budi Madani cash aid.

“At my age, I don’t want another car loan, so I am taking good care of my old truck.

“Pickup trucks are known for being tough and lasting for a long time. I still love camping and boating, so I need my truck,” he added.

Individuals can register at the government’s website, budimadani.gov.my, to apply for cash aid if they own diesel vehicles for personal use.

Norway is the great spine of Scandinavian Europe, ranging from the rugged, rocky inlets of the southern Skagerrak bays, to the wild and uncharted Arctic land of the northern Finnmark. It’s a country at once both cutting-edge and highly-traditional, a place where visitors can spy out the intermingling of old Norse living and futuristic design, while there’s no question that Norway’s biggest touristic pull is its grand and untameable outdoors. In recent years Fjord cruises have become one of the country’s biggest sells, with more people than ever now coming to spy out these mystical and legendary valleys for a taste of the dramatic vistas that are so common they soon pass without notice. Of these, it’s the UNESCO-attested Sognefjord and the fairy-tale Hardangerfjord that are the absolute ‘must sees’, while your Norway tourist guide will, no doubt, be able to recommend other worthy sites all along the coast. In the mountainous interior of the country, hikers, bikers, kayakers and those after a taste of traditional Nordic dog sledding won’t be disappointed, while Norway is fast becoming one of the leading ski destinations in all of northern Europe. But this country’s energetic character doesn’t stop there, and from the classy bars of Oslo to the medieval facades of harbour side Bergen, there are plenty of inner-city gems just waiting to be discovered.

Amateur radio Field Day in Ocean Township

The Garden State Amateur Radio Association is taking part in the American Radio Relay League's Field Day on Saturday at Joe Palaia Park in Ocean Township.

"Amateur radio operators around the country set up portable operations outdoors, with the goal of sharpening our skills in emergency communications," said Joe Hewes in a news release.

It's a great opportunity to learn about amateur (ham) radio, he added.

ARRL is the national association for amateur radio in the United States.

"Ham radio operators, your neighbors, are trained and equipped to serve emergency operations, off grid, in times of disaster," Hewes said in the release.

Based in Tinton Falls, the Garden State Amateur Radio Association communicates with Morse code, voice and digital modes using a computer. From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, there will be an educational activity table where kids (and adults) can learn to spell their name phonetically. There also will be a Morse code key to let everyone tap their name in code.

Attendees also can talk to other hams on the air. In 2021, more than 26,000 hams participated in Field Day from thousands of locations in North America.
