New Fall Shows Added in the US, Canada and Mexico

Depeche mode’s first tour in over five years kicks off march 23, 2023 in sacramento, ca.

Following the rapturous reception to their new single “Ghosts Again,”  Depeche Mode  have added a new Fall leg of North American tour dates to the Memento Mori Tour, which will support Memento Mori, their forthcoming studio album due out March 24. With the addition of these 29 new shows, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees will now set out on a colossal 75-date tour — their 19th tour and their first in over five years.

The Live Nation-presented tour begins March 23 with a limited North American run featuring stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, and Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. The band will then embark on their European stadium tour on May 16, with noted stops including the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium.

Following the end of the European summer run, the newly added tour dates bring the band back to North America in the Fall, with the tour stopping in Mexico City at Foro Sol before returning to the US and Canada. Newly announced tour stops include Austin’s Moody Center, Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, additional New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena and more, and concluding with a multi-night run in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum and Crypto.com Arena.

Pre-sales will kick off with a Fan Pre-sale on Tuesday, February 21, with the general on sale beginning Friday, February 24 at 10am local time. For further information on the tour routing and ticket on-sale dates, please visit  depechemode.com . The full listing of dates, cities and venues is also below. On the Memento Mori Tour, the band will once again be partnering with luxury watchmaker Hublot to support charity endeavors tied to the tour.

Reception to the Memento Mori tour has been overwhelming with shows quickly selling out across Europe and North America, and over 1.5 million tickets already sold for the initial 46 shows. The tour is on track to be one of Depeche Mode’s largest to date and is also well on its way to being one of the largest worldwide tours of 2023. The tour will feature Depeche Mode favorites and rarities, alongside new songs from Memento Mori, including the new single ”Ghosts Again,” which has been heralded as “a melancholic and joyful ode” (Vulture), “hypnotic” (Rolling Stone), and “a gorgeous, haunting song” (Revolver). The beautifully stark and cinematic Anton Corbijn-directed video for “Ghosts Again” released on February 9th can be viewed at  https://depechemode.lnk.to/GhostsAgain .

Having sold more than 100 million records and played to more than 35 million fans worldwide, Depeche Mode remains an ever-evolving and singularly influential musical force. An indelible inspiration to fans, critics and artists alike, Depeche Mode continues to forge ahead, with the Memento Mori album and tour representing the opening of the newest chapter of a peerless and ongoing legacy.

Depeche Mode Announces New Album and World Tour

Depeche Mode will release a new album next spring called  Memento Mori . They'll also launch a global tour, their first live performances in five years and first since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher. A specific release date for  Memento Mori  has not been revealed, but according to band members, work on the album began early in the pandemic.

"Its themes were directly inspired by that time," singer Dave Gahan said in a press release. "After Fletch's passing, we decided to continue as we're sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning. Fletch would have loved this album. We're really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can't wait to present it to you live at the shows next year."

The  Memento Mori  Tour will launch in Sacramento, Calif., on March 23 and head east, stopping in several major U.S. cities plus three Canadian venues. They'll perform at New York City's Madison Square Garden on April 14, before going overseas for shows across Europe. You can see the complete list of concert dates below. The album, which is currently being finished by producers James Ford and Marta Salogni in London, marks the band's 15th LP and follows 2017's  Spirit .

In a recent interview with  Rolling Stone , multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore clarified that the album's title, which translates in Latin to "remember that you must die," was chosen before Fletcher died and that the songs were not written as a response to his death.

"Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us," Gore said. "So I like the idea of 'memento mori' in a more positive way, in a 'Live each day and make the most of your time here.'" Gore also emphasized that he and his bandmates feel that Fletcher would have wanted them to continue making music without him: "He was always seen as the glue of the band. It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would've caused the end of the band."

According to the band, Memento Mori  will most likely feature 12 songs, plus a couple of extra tracks that will be used for a deluxe edition. "To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it," Gahan said. "It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we're like, 'This is my world,' and ending with, 'How do I make the most of it?'"

On May 26, 2022 Andy Fletcher unexpectedly died, with the cause of death later being revealed to be aortic dissection. Although songwriting and demo work on the album began prior to Fletcher's death, Dave Gahan stated in an interview with NME that Fletcher did not record any material for the album.

In the same NME interview, Martin Gore also explained how Richard Butler ended up co-writing seven songs for the album. In April 2020, Butler reached out to Gore to write songs together. He sent some lyrics, Gore added the music, and they went back and forth.

Gore said the songs were too good to be a side project, and so Depeche Mode put them on the album although Butler was never going to join the band.

“Martin sent me about six songs, and Richard Butler was singing on a few of them,” Dave Gahan recalled. “I was like, ‘…The fuck is this?’ Then Martin explained that during COVID he and Richard had written some songs together. I don’t care who wrote them, but they were some great songs.”

In August 2022, a photo of Gore and Gahan in the studio was shared on social media, indicating they were in the studio working on new material.

On October 4, 2022, the band held a press conference in Berlin, announcing their upcoming album titled Memento Mori and a world tour to go along with it. The album is scheduled to be released "towards the end of March" 2023, which will coincide with the tour starting on March 23, 2023.

"We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletch's passing, we decided to continue as we're sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning." - Martin Gore on the creating process of the album, Live Nation Entertainment

A description of the album appeared on the band's official website: "The album's 12 tracks chart a vast expansion of moods and textures, from its ominous opening to its closing resolve—running the gamut from paranoia and obsession to catharsis and joy, and hitting myriad points between". The full tracklist of 12 songs was also announced. On Volt Magazin' s website, it was confirmed that "Dave Gahan and Martin Gore said there were five finished tracks that didn't make it onto the long player."

Memento Mori was acclaimed by critics on its release. The album received a score of 86 out of 100 from fourteen critics' reviews on review aggregator Metacritic, indicating "universal acclaim". At AnyDecentMusic?, which collects critical reviews from more than 50 media sources, the album scored 8.1 points out of 10, based on 11 professional reviews.

The Guardian gave it four out of five stars, writing "Gore's say-what-you-see lyrics are always best on the essentials of life – sex and death – and Ghosts Again is the pair's best single in aeons, a singalong meditation on mortality that's concise and powerful. Both are in fine voice. Gore's choirboy trills have never been richer than on Soul with Me, while Gahan ranges ever-restlessly from operatic to reptilian, the electro-pop Freddie Mercury. There's warmth in the album's fusion of industrial grind with delicate melody, and producer James Ford sparks a revivifying weirdness in songs such as My Cosmos Is Mine. For a record preoccupied by death, its big heart bursts with life."

Kory Grow of Rolling Stone praised the message of the album, stating "Acknowledging mortality defines much of Memento Mori, but it never feels heavy handed or even all that sullen. Some of the tracks even sound upbeat". He concluded, "As always with Depeche Mode, everything counts in large amounts, and on Memonto Mori , the stakes feel bigger than ever."

Cristina Jaleru of ABC News was also positive about the album stating "The 12 tracks are fully Depeche, fully intoxicating in sound, artistically evocative and sometimes puzzling (like the compelling but strange 'Caroline's Monkey'). The music is staring lovingly into the abyss and asking it to love it back; death is always hovering on the periphery of the sound, a grunge, industrial, rainy sound also filled with a strange kindness." and concluded. "Depeche Mode might be facing their own mortality but their power as musicians stretches into infinity."

Ultimate Classic Rock praised the album, favoring it to its predecessor Spirit stating "Depeche Mode's previous album, 2017's Spirit , suffered from some ill-fitting turns toward the political. There's little of that in Memento Mori . For the most part, this is classic band territory – moody goth draped in familiar lyrical subjects, now also informed by a world-stopping pandemic", but was critical on some tracks saying Don't Say You Love Me comes off like the result of a ChatGPT quest to write a Depeche Mode song, and Caroline's Monkey unsuccessfully juggles too many sounds and metaphors during its four-plus minutes."

The album will be supported by the Memento Mori World Tour . The tour starts on March 23, 2023 in Sacramento, California and ends on December 15, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

Depeche Mode, Still Mourning, Return With Tour and New Album ‘Memento Mori’

By Kory Grow

During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode ‘s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori .

“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori . “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore says he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend. “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already,'” he says.

Before they could get in the studio, though, the title took on far greater meaning for Gahan and Gore. On May 26, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who co-founded Depeche Mode and played synthesizers and bass in the group since 1980, died naturally of an aortic dissection. Did they second-guess the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it cemented it, if anything,” Gore says.

“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.'”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Even now, the two musicians are still making sense of their bandmate’s absence. “You don’t always get to say goodbye,” Gahan says. “With this, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting in a pew in a church together, and Fletch is not here anymore, just like that.”

“It’s obviously really hard to lose your closest friend,” Gore says. “Andy was there with me from way before the band and I feel like he was the one in the trenches with me the whole way. So it’s very tough.”

But Gore feels his bandmate would have wanted Depeche Mode to continue. “He was always seen as the glue of the band,” he says. “It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would’ve caused the end of the band.”

Depeche Mode Complete Late-Night Trifecta With 'Wagging Tongue' on 'Fallon'

Watch chvrches' lauren mayberry cover depeche mode’s ‘personal jesus’, johnny marr previews new compilation album with single 'somewhere'.

Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other face to face to work on the album until July. The singer feels that if Fletch were working on the album, he’d have joked, “Can we just stop talking about death?” “I missed that in the studio,” the singer says, “and I know Martin did, too. We felt like he was still there with us.”

The group opened the Berlin event with a short montage, showing close-ups of music gear as echoey, undeniably Depeche Mode music plays in the background. The soundtrack had a throbbing, fuzzy synth bass line and operatic vocals. Eventually, the camera pulled out to show the musicians together in the studio. Eventually, Gahan’s voice enters and he sings, “We know we’ll be ghosts again.”

Neither Gahan nor Gore feel ready to name any of Memento Mori’s song titles — days before the Berlin event, they’re not even quite sure what the final titles are for the musical selections they’re playing — but they say the structure of the album as a whole came together naturally. “To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it,” Gahan says. “It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we’re like, ‘This is my world,’ and ending with, ‘How do I make the most of it?'” The music, Gahan says, sounds melancholy but it’s also braided with hope and joy. The record will likely feature 12 songs with a few saved over as extras for a deluxe edition.

When asked in Berlin if the band will be paying tribute to Fletch on the tour, Gahan said the group was still figuring it out but had zeroed in on some of Fletch’s favorite Depeche Mode songs. “He’ll be there in spirit, I’m sure, judging us,” he said with a laugh.

In another light moment, a journalist asked if the band would ever consider doing an “unplugged” tour. “We can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band,” Gahan said, chuckling. Gore added, “We can try it with battery packs or something.”

In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will start its Memento Mori tour in North America instead of Europe. “I can’t remember the last time we started in America, if we ever have,” Gore says. “I’m sure we did at some point, but it just seemed like something different to do.” (The European leg will begin May 16. Some of the venues the group next year will play include Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Twickenham Stadium and the Stade de France.) The band will return to North America in Sept. 2023 for another round of 29 arena shows.

Until then, they will press forward while continuing to grieve their friend and bandmate’s death. “It was very odd coming to Berlin and coming into a hotel where we have been with Andy many times, and just seeing the bar where we’d often seen sitting,” Gore says. “That was a bit of a reality check. Martin Gore and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode.

Depeche Mode: Memento Mori review – a life-affirming farewell for Fletch

(Columbia) Andy Fletcher’s two surviving bandmates reflect on mortality on an album of warm, weird electro-pop

A ndy Fletcher’s death could’ve ended Depeche Mode. In Fletch’s 42-year tenure, curtailed last May, the Basildon band never made a truly bad album, rarely stooped to covers or re-records. The music gently declined in quality over the decades, but their tours grew bigger and better. Their final album would’ve been 2017’s Spirit , a decent tilt at reinventing the grand claustrophobia of 1987 masterpiece Music for the Masses . A solid legacy. Instead, surviving bandmates Martin Gore and Dave Gahan have assembled Memento Mori , an elegant farewell for Fletch.

Gore’s say-what-you-see lyrics are always best on the essentials of life – sex and death – and Ghosts Again is the pair’s best single in aeons, a singalong meditation on mortality that’s concise and powerful. Both are in fine voice. Gore’s choirboy trills have never been richer than on Soul With Me, while Gahan ranges ever-restlessly from operatic to reptilian, the electro-pop Freddie Mercury. There’s warmth in the album’s fusion of industrial grind with delicate melody, and producer James Ford sparks a revivifying weirdness in songs such as My Cosmos Is Mine. For a record preoccupied by death, its big heart bursts with life.

These recordings are highly recommended as they are generally regarded as some of the best recordings from this tour. This is not an exhaustive list of very good sounding recordings.

Notably, the prolific taper RyanJ has uploaded a total of 13 excellent audience/in-ear monitor matrix recordings from various dates during the North American legs of this tour. Depeche Mode 140,000 devotees in the Olympiastadion Berlin

Depeche Mode are practically permanent guests in Berlin by now. After an unexpected death of keyboardist and founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2022, the two remaining band members Dave Gahan and Martin L. Gore announced their 15th studio album “Memento Mori” and the accompanying “World Tour” at a press conference in the capital of Germany. After 2009, 2013 and 2017, Depeche Mode found their way back to the Olympiastadion Berlin on July 7th and July 9th, 2023.

Two hot summer evenings awaited the approximately 70,000 visitors in the Olympiastadion. However, no sign of summer sluggishness: everyone celebrated and danced and sang loudly with their idols to old and new hits, which ranged from their debut album “Speak and Spell” (released in 1981) to the aforementioned “Memento Mori” (released in March 2023).

Over 40 years of music history that Gahan and Gore brought to the stage along with their long-time touring members Peter Gordeno (keyboards) and Christian Eigner (drums) and thus excited generations of their fans. Only a handful of artists know how to put a spell on a crowd, and Dave Gahan is one of them. Few words, pure presence and personality. Facial expressions, gestures, dances. Sometimes energetic, sometimes lascivious with circling hips. From the outside, it might seem like Martin Gore is stepping into the background, dedicating himself to his instruments in addition to the backing vocals, but comes out all the more intensively when he performs “Strangelove” in an acoustic version, all alone with his guitar, as he did on the second night. Goosebumps.

Depeche Mode performed for a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes or 23 songs each evening, ending both shows with their evergreen “Personal Jesus”. Just today, the band announced that their Memento Mori World Tour will continue in 2024, performing once again in Berlin.

Depeche Mode

Memento mori tour 2023, olympic stadium.

Depeche Mode

The band has not been seen live for five years, but now Depeche Mode is returning to the concert stages of this world. On the tour for their new studio album "Memento Mori", the British pop legends will also make a stop in Munich: on 20 June 2023 at the Open Air in the Olympic Stadium.

There are few bands that have maintained such a permanent position at the top of the world pop music scene over the decades. In 1982, Depeche Mode made its first guest appearance in Munich at the height of British New Wave, at that time still in the old Alabamahalle. Between 1987 and 2006, the band came to the Olympic Hall for eight concerts, followed by three acclaimed concerts in the Olympic Stadium in 2009, 2013 and 2017.

Now the fourth open air under the tent roof will follow on 20 June 2023, but for the first time without keyboardist Andy Fletcher, who died of an aortic rupture in May 2022 at the age of only 60. After the death of their friend and companion, Martin Gore and Dave Gahan were still thinking about the future of the band - only to decide to continue the Depeche Mode success story, finish the album and go on tour again.

"After Fletch's death, we decided to carry on because we're sure that's what he would have wanted," says Martin Gore, and his mate Dave Gahan adds: "Fletch would have loved this album." Memento Mori is Depeche Mode's 15th studio album, and the Memento Mori Tour is the 19th tour by the British global stars.

Depeche Mode: Memento Mori

Depeche Mode frontman, Dave Gahan, once said of his bandmate, chief songwriter, Martin Gore, that he only ever pens lyrics about three subjects: death, pain and suffering.

Death hangs over this record – their fifteenth studio album – more so than ever, because it’s the first one the group, now a duo, have made without fellow member, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, who died in 2022. The title, Memento Mori, is a Latin phrase meaning ‘Remember you must die,’ but, ironically, the album was named and written before Fletcher’s passing.

Depeche Mode reunited with producer, James Ford, who was at the controls for 2017’s Spirit, which was the band’s most political record, but suffered from a lack of great and memorable songs.

The 12-track Memento Mori brings with it a sadness due to the circumstances in which it was made, but the good news is that it’s mostly a return to form – in fact, it’s the best album Depeche Mode have made since 1997’s brilliant and underrated Ultra, which was created in the wake of Gahan’s near-fatal drug overdose.

It isn’t a perfect record – the first half is stronger than the second and some of the songs, like the chugging ‘Always You’ and the dizzying ‘Never Let Me Go’, need repeated listening to sink in. Memento Mori would be a stronger album without them.

Opener, ‘My Cosmos Is Mine’, is a brilliant scene setter – creating a foreboding and unsettling atmosphere with its pulsing electronics and spacey synths. Choral-like backing vocals lend it a gothic sci-fi soundtrack feel, and co-producer and engineer, Marta Salogni, has processed Gahan’s and Gore’s vocals through lots of tape, creating otherworldly and psychedelic backwards effects.

‘Wagging Tongue’ – “Watch another angel die” – is a Gore and Gahan co-write. Based on a hypnotic, Kraftwerkesque keyboard part, it sounds a bit like Nick Cave doing Yazoo.

First single, the sublime pop of ‘Ghosts Again’, one of four songs Gore has written with Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs, manages to be both melancholy and uplifting at the same time.

Built on a trademark Gore guitar hook, it evokes the band’s classic 1990 hit ‘Enjoy The Silence’, as well as the Pet Shop Boys circa Behaviour and New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle.’

‘Don’t Say You Love Me’, another Gore and Butler composition, is wonderful – a dramatic and doomy Scott Walker-style torch song (“You’ll be the killer, I’ll be the corpse”) with James Bond strings and a great vocal performance by Gahan.

The shadowy and throbbing ‘My Favourite Stranger’ occupies more familiar Depeche Mode territory – it’s a jarring electro-industrial track, with squelchy synths and some, occasionally, irritating and upsetting squally sounds, but ‘Soul With Me’ offers some solace – a gorgeous and histrionic, Gore-sung ballad with an angelic arrangement and a touch of smooth ‘80s pop.

The oddly-titled ‘Caroline’s Monkey’, which references drug addiction – “Caroline’s monkey claws at her back, colder than winter, darker than black” – has a weird, mutated disco groove that is strangely reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’.

The final song, ‘Speak To Me’, is an epic interstellar ballad that also touches on narcotics in its lyrics. It sounds like Gahan is addressing the dark times in his past when he sings: “I heard you call my name, lying on the bathroom floor – no one here to blame.”

This is a great-sounding and intriguing album, with some inventive production techniques (some of which are very old indeed) that manages to immerse the listener in warm sonics, but also adds a disturbing edge to some of the songs.

Memento Mori isn’t up there with the band’s crowning glory, 1990’s Violator, and it may be overshadowed by the death of Fletcher, but it’s great to have a Depeche Mode record which sounds like it’s got some new life in it.
