Once in a Lifetime Alaska Cruise Vacation: Bucket List Destinations
By Melissa Alvarado Sierra | Published on January 28, 2022
Alaska is for the daring at heart, offering more than just a vacation, but an awakening in nature. An Alaska cruise vacation offers rare opportunities to experience the state as a true explorer: trekking pristine mountains, sailing pure waters, and hiking unspoiled parks.
Don't let Alaska's size — bigger than Texas, California, and Montana combined — intimidate you. The trick is to narrow your focus and create an Alaska bucket list of the must-see locations and experiences. Some of the most beloved destinations in Alaska, like Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Skagway, each offer a special kind of adventure.
Visiting The Wild And Wondrous Juneau
The state capital of Alaska, Juneau can only be reached by air or water — making your Alaska cruise vacation the perfect way to travel through its wilderness. When you arrive in this large city, the second largest in the U.S. geographically, simply look up and you'll be in awe of its raw beauty and scenery. Mountains hug Juneau, and Mount Juneau itself rises 3,500 feet above the ground, adorned by wild goats and beautiful wildflower fields.
As you explore Juneau, you'll find whispering waterfalls, unearthly fjords, magical ice fields, and hungry bears catching jumping salmon. One of the main attractions is the Mount Roberts Tramway. The experience starts with a six-minute ascent through a rain forest and then to the top of Mount Roberts, 1,800 feet up. Once at the summit, you're rewarded with a panoramic view of Gastineau Channel, Douglas Island, the peaks of Admiralty Island, and, of course, the lovely city of Juneau. You'll find a nature center, restaurant, theater, and shops atop the mountain as well. From there, you can take one of the trails available, choosing to hike up or down this striking mountain.
Captivating Culture Of Traveling In Ketchikan
Ketchikan is the place to play in nature while also immersing yourself in rich local culture. Everywhere you look, there are traces of the celebrated Native Alaskans, from beautifully carved, of the best places to savor these dishes include Wilderness Exploration and Crab Feed, George Inlet Crab Feast, Alaska Fish House, and Alava's Fish n' Chowder.
Enriching Enlightenment On Sitka Excursions
An island community facing the Pacific Ocean, Sitka occupies the west shore of Baranof Island. Famous for its Tlingit (CLINK-it) Native culture and for being the former capital of Russian Alaska, Sitka wonderfully preserves aspects of all the different cultures that helped mold the city. Forested islands dot the view of the shore, where locals live surrounded by rugged mountains and a gorgeous yet icy cold sea. Here, ancient culture is preserved and thriving, and everyone embraces a deep connection to nature.
Add an excursion to the mystical Sitka National Park to your Alaska bucket list , where towering hemlock and spruce surround the site of a famous 1804 battle between the indigenous Tlingit and invading Russian traders. Totem poles from indigenous groups line the scenic Totem Trail, standing proudly in the rainforest near the ocean.
For history buffs, follow the trail to the Tlingit fort by the Indian River. Other interesting historical sites include the Russian Bishop's House, built in 1842 as a residence for the Bishop of the Orthodox Church; Castle Hill, originally built as a longhouse for the Tlingit clan; and St. Michael's Cathedral, which houses a collection of Russian Orthodox art.
After learning all about Sitka's history and culture, it's time to head for the outdoors. One way to explore is by going on an ATV tour, a thrilling ride that gets you close to nature in remote settings by driving you past local wildlife, mesmerizing scenery, and even a beach. Another option is flight-seeing Sitka's impressive landscape, flying above Southeast Alaska's most magnificent lakes and streams. Or, catch a floatplane to fish for salmon, an experience you can't have anywhere else. If you want to see everything Sitka has to offer from ground level, check out the bike and boat tours, kayak rentals, hiking, and wildlife sightseeing.
Go to Skagway: Historic Bucket List Tours
Skagway's gold rush history and jaw-dropping scenery make this town a fixture on any Alaska bucket list. Imagine a forty-thousand-strong stampede of treasure-seekers saturating the Chilkoot Trail on their way to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. This and more can be imagined or recreated by visiting the Broadway corridor, which features historic shops and restaurants, actors in period costumes, and wooden sidewalks inside the Klondike Gold Rush Historical Park. Also, stop by the Mascot Saloon, a historic building that's been restored to its former Gold Rush glory days and is now being used as a museum recounting the lives of the stampeders.
Architecture buffs will love Skagway. The Arctic Brotherhood Hall, a former fraternal hall and now the headquarters of the local convention and visitor's bureau, is the most photographed building in Alaska thanks to its rustic stone facade. Next, visit Skagway's oldest building, the Moore Homestead, built in 1887. Finally, the Corrington Museum of Alaska History will wrap up the trip back in time with ancient artifacts, including a six-foot mammoth tusk and mastodon fossils, as well as exhibitions about Alaska Natives and European settlers and explorers.
There's also ample opportunity to get in touch with nature through hiking and backpacking excursions. Head to the Chilkoot Trail and follow the same route the stampeders took, or take an Alaskan glacier tour , such as the Laughton hanging glacier in the Sawtooth Range. Skagway is a place where you get to see and do things you could never do back home — things you can only do during an Alaska cruise vacation .

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.
- Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas in January.
- My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
- I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.
There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .
The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.
If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.
But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.
Take a look at what made the cut.
1. The six-slide waterpark
It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.
Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.
However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.
2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool
The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.
I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.
While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.
3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'
There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.
Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.
4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows
If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.
The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.
For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.
It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.
5. The live jazz bar
Ya like jazz? So do I.
Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.
6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall
The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .
But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.
The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.
7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views
Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.
Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.
But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).
At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected. It turns out it's a great place to get some work done.
8. The lounging pods that tower above passerbys
Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome.
If you want to feel like you're drinking in a nest atop a tree, bring your coffee-infused cocktail from nearby Rye and Bean to one of the elevated pods. .
Just don't drink too much. What goes up must come down. And to get down from the pods, you'll have to take the stairs.

Popular cruise line cancels trip with guests already on board: What happens next?
G uests onboard a popular cruise line were told their trip was canceled and they were being sent home despite already being on board the vessel.
Royal Caribbean International notified guests aboard Radiance of the Sea the ship will not continue on an already-abbreviated Alaska sailing. Instead, the voyage was canceled and guests had to leave the ship and be sent home, CruiseHive.com reported.
The ship was set to depart Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday and guests were permitted on board. It was announced the ship would spend two days in port undergoing repair with a revised departure date of Sunday, April 28 before returning May 3 as planned.
Later, however, an announcement was made the trip was being canceled due to repairs for a technical issue impacting its propulsion, the website reported, and guests had to leave the ship Sunday by 4 p.m. local time.
“As you are aware, our teams have been vigorously working to have Radiance of the Seas prepared to set sail on our shortened April 26th sailing,” a letter given to passengers in their staterooms read, according to reports by unofficial cruise site RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com reported. “Despite our best efforts, circumstances beyond our control have delayed our sailing further. As a result, we’ll regrettably have to cancel our April 26th, 2024 cruise.”

What happens to the guests?
Guests will receive a 100% refund on their fare and a 100% future cruise credit for a later sailing. The cruise line opened internet service free of charge to allow for easier travel planning and offered a free open bar until debarkation, reports indicated.
Cruisers who booked flights through Royal Caribbean had their flights automatically rescheduled. The cruise line is also reimbursing any travel change fees up to $250 for domestic travel and $400 for international travel and up to $250 for hotel costs, per statement, per night, for two nights.

The ship first developed propulsion difficulties last week during a repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver, causing several stops to be scrapped to accommodate the slower speed.
