Why it’s illegal to photograph the Eiffel Tower at night – but not during the day

author image

The Eiffel Tower at night.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most photographed monuments in the world.

What many people don’t realise, however, is it’s actually illegal to take pictures of the structure at night.

Even snapping a sneaky selfie with the illuminated tower in the background is technically breaking the law.

This is because the lighting is officially classified as a work of art and due to  European Copyright Law remains under the domain of the late Pierre Bideau, the engineer who designed the current system, which was installed in 1985.

Copyright lasts for 70 years after a person’s death, and as Bideau only died in 2021, there’s a while yet before it expires.

According to  La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel  (SETE), the building’s operating company, anyone wanting to publish a photo of the tower at night should request permission, pay for rights, and then credit the artist appropriately. Otherwise, there’s risk of fines.

The law, however, is mainly aimed at commercial use, so it’s unlikely you’ll get in trouble for taking photos for personal use.

Two photographers take pictures of the Eiffel Tower.

Speaking to Condé Nast Traveller , leisure and brand photographer Marc Nouss has previously said: ‘We are talking about a monument photographed thousands of times per day.

‘I still shoot it without mentioning anything, as everyone does. But I wouldn’t take the risk by selling one taken at night.’

Taking pictures of the tower during the day is totally fine as the man who designed the structure, Gustave Eiffel, died in 1923, more than 100 years ago, so no copyright remains.

And capturing the impressive view from the top of the tower is also OK, day or night. A message on the SETE website reads: ‘The views from the Eiffel Tower are rights-free.’

A boat travelling along the Seine past the Eiffel Tower at dusk.

Eiffel Tower light show

The Eiffel Tower lighting system has light-sensitive twilight sensors, which causes the tower to light up within less than 10 minutes of dusk.

The timing varies depending on when the sun goes down, though the lights always switch off at 11.45pm. It used to be later, but was brought forward in 2022 as part of Paris’s energy saving efforts.

For the first five minutes of each hour, the tower’s 20,000 bulbs flash, creating a sparkling effect.

Olympic rings adorn Eiffel Tour with 50 days remaining before Summer Games begin

  • Published: Jun. 07, 2024, 7:17 a.m.
  • The Associated Press

PARIS (AP) — The Paris Olympics organizers on Friday unveiled a display of the five Olympic rings mounted on the Eiffel Tower as the French capital marks 50 days until the start of the Summer Games.

The structure of rings, made of recycled French steel, will be displayed on the south side of the 135-year-old landmark in central Paris, overlooking the Seine River. Each ring is 30 feet in diameter.

Thousands of athletes will parade through the heart of the French capital on boats on the Seine along a 3.7-mile route in the opening ceremony at sunset on July 26.

There will be no shortage of iconic venues at the Paris Olympics.

The tower, nicknamed La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady), will feature prominently in the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games and the following Paralympics.

Men’s and women’s volleyball players will compete at the foot of the 1,083-foot monument. They will be watched by nearly 13,000 fans at the temporary Eiffel Tower Stadium on the nearby Champ de Mars, where Parisians and tourists like to have picnics on the grass or watch July 14 firework displays.

The Olympic and Paralympic medals in Paris are being embedded with pieces from a hexagonal chunk of iron taken from the tower.

The hugely popular landmark in central Paris has seen soaring visitor numbers in the leadup to the 2024 Games.

Two huge cranes were used overnight Friday to lift the 30—ton structure and mount it between the first and second floors of the tower.

The Olympic rings will be illuminated every night with 100,000 LED bulbs through the Paralympic Games that start Aug. 28, 17 days after the Olympics’ closing ceremony.

The Paralympics will bring together 4,400 athletes from 180 countries in 549 events and 22 sports. Many sports will take place near landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and the Grand Palais.

June 7, 2024 Hour: 1:53 pm

The Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8.

On Thursday, the iconic five Olympic rings, adorning the exterior of the world-renowned Eiffel Tower, were unveiled, marking the 50-day countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

2024 Olympics Flame Lighting Rehearsal Held at Ancient Olympia

The five Olympic rings, manufactured by ArcelorMittal, were installed on the iconic Eiffel Tower during the night of June 6-7, standing across the Seine River from the Trocadero Square.

“At the Games, we call these giant rings the “Spectaculars” and we could hardly do more spectacular than the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is Paris, it is France. We wanted to create an image that everyone will remember,” said Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024.

Each ring has a diameter of about 9 meters, and the entire structure is 29 meters wide and 13 meters high. The installation required four cranes and a team of about 30 engineers.

“As an iconic monument of Paris and France, the Eiffel Tower is honored to be adorned with the emblem of the Olympic Games,” commented Jean-Francois Martins, president of the Societe d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE). By once again taking on an ambitious technical challenge, the Eiffel Tower, faithful to its history, brings its mark and its audacity to these Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

The International Olympic Committee has turned a blind eye to "Israel's" war crimes in #Gaza , not taking any stances against Israeli athletes, even though it had its eyes wide open when the war in #Ukraine started and was quick to sanction #Russian athletes. During each edition, the Olympic rings take place in an iconic location in the host city: Tower Bridge in London in 2012, Madureira Park in Rio in 2016, and Odaiba Bay in Tokyo in 2021. With these Olympic rings, the Eiffel Tower is even more at the heart of the Paris 2024 Games.

The Eiffel Tower will be the setting for the competitions at the Eiffel Tower stadium (beach volleyball), at the Champ de Mars Arena (judo, wrestling) and the Pont d’Iena (road cycling).

The Iron Lady will also be at the heart of the celebrations of the champions of the Games: in the background of the Parc des Champions at the Trocadero. She finally inspired the design of the podiums and that of the medals with a piece of her original iron in each of them.

Starting from June 7, the Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower until the end of the Paralympic Games. The Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8.

Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast, Russia

paris night tour eiffel

Elektrostal is a city in the Moscow Oblast of Russia, located around 30 km east of Moscow. It is home to around 160,000 inhabitants and is an important industrial and cultural center in the region. The city is known for its vibrant night lights, which are a major attraction for both tourists and locals alike.

The amount of light pollution in Elektrostal is quite significant, due to the large number of industrial facilities and residential buildings. The city's industrial sector, which includes metallurgical plants, chemical factories, and power stations, is one of the main sources of light pollution in the area. The city's residential areas also contribute to the problem, as many people leave their lights on throughout the night.

One of the most well-known landmarks in Elektrostal is the Monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built in 1964 to commemorate the achievements of the Soviet space program. The monument is illuminated at night and is visible from many parts of the city. Another notable landmark is the Elektrostal Museum of Local Lore, which is housed in a historic building and features exhibits on the city's history and culture.

In addition to its industrial and cultural attractions, Elektrostal is also known for its vibrant nightlife. The city has a large number of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, many of which are open until late into the night. The city's residents are known for their love of music and dancing, and the local nightlife scene reflects this.

Despite the significant amount of light pollution in Elektrostal, there are efforts underway to reduce the problem. The city government has implemented a number of initiatives aimed at promoting energy efficiency and reducing waste, including a program to replace traditional streetlights with LED lights. The city also encourages its residents to conserve energy by turning off lights when they are not needed.

Elektrostal is a vibrant and dynamic city in the Moscow Oblast, with a rich industrial and cultural heritage. While its night lights are a major attraction, they also contribute to the problem of light pollution in the area. However, efforts are underway to address the issue, and the city's residents and government are working together to promote sustainable and energy-efficient practices.

Explore the Eiffel Tower

Come and discover the Eiffel Tower in a journey to the clouds like none other in the world. You’ll be swept away by emotions and adrenaline, from the esplanade to the top, whether day or night! The Eiffel Tower welcomes visitors every day, including in the evening. At nightfall, it lights up and sparkles every hour until closing time arrives, when it turns off. To visit the floors of the Eiffel Tower – there are three: first floor, second floor and the top – visitors can either purchase tickets in advance, from our official online ticket office, or on site the day of their visit, at the ticket office located on the esplanade below the Eiffel Tower. If you wish to simply come and enjoy a stroll beneath the Tower, on the esplanade and in the gardens, access is free. All you need to do is take one of the monument’s two main entrances and go through the security checks.

The Eiffel Tower offers a range of ticket options, to the top (by elevator only, or by elevator then stairs) or to the second floor (by elevator or by stairs). All tickets include access to the lower levels. First, visit the highest level included in your ticket: second floor or top. At the top, which is accessed solely via elevator from the second floor, enjoy the most impressive 360° view of Paris, at a height of 906 feet. At this level, you can also celebrate your experience with a glass of bubbles from the champagne bar. A reconstruction of Gustave Eiffel’s office with wax figures can be seen through portholes. At a height of 381 feet, on the second floor, you have two levels and plenty of space to explore. Contemplate Paris from a range of perspectives, spot its most iconic monuments and buildings, and admire the structure of the Tower above you.

On the lower level of the second floor, you’ll find the famous Pierre Hermé macaron bar, a buffet, shops, and a kiosk serving drinks, including champagne. On the upper level, you can take in the most unobstructed view. It’s also on this level that you can find the Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, Le Jules Verne. Reservations must be made separately from your ticket purchase (accessible via a private elevator). Lastly, the first floor, located at 187 feet, is also worth a detour, to learn more about the history of the Eiffel Tower. This vast space is full of museum installations and offers a large shop. And if you’re feeling hungry, you have several options: enjoy a meal or snack on-the-go at the bistro or on the terrace (if the season allows). Otherwise, the Madame Brasserie restaurant and lounge will be happy to welcome you all day long: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, pre-dinner snacks, dinner, and even brunch on Sundays (outside of school holidays).

Each ring is 9 meters (30 feet) in diameter.

Thousands of athletes will parade through the heart of the French capital on boats on the Seine along a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) route in the  opening ceremony at sunset on July 26.

There will be no shortage of  iconic venues at the Paris Olympics.

The tower, nicknamed La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady), will feature prominently in the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games and the following Paralympics.

Men’s and women’s volleyball players will compete at the foot of the  330-meter (1,083-foot)  monument.
