Belize Travel Tips

When planning a day trip in Belize, you should know the climate and currency used. Also, be aware of your different needs depending on your tour package. For example, you may need a swimsuit for water-based tours. Or, a good pair of walking shoes if most of your tour experience is on foot.

The climate of Belize is warm, with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees, so be sure to apply lots of sunscreen during your stay. If you forget to pack your own bottle, you can buy one at nearly any gift shop or supermarket.

From approximately late November to mid-April, the dry season yields less rain and more tourist activity than the rest of the year. However, it's always a great time to go on a tour or excursion in Belize! This country loves to celebrate, so check out the many holidays of the year Belize celebrates while planning your vacation.

The Belize dollar is the standard currency, but almost all places accept US dollars. Ask your tour guide specific questions about currency.

23 of the best things to do in Belize

When it comes to adventure, Belize ’s glittering Caribbean coastline, wildlife-filled jungles, coral reefs and mysterious underground cave systems provide endless opportunities to explore.

Meanwhile, the country's diverse cultural heritage means there’s delicious cuisine and fun activities to be discovered. Boutique hotels predominate here, and they're your gateway to the jewel in the crown of Central America, whether it’s a private island or ecolodge vibe  you’re looking for.

From scuba diving to exploring ancient ruined cities, here are Belize's must-do activities.

1. Explore Maya ruins

Belize was once the center of the Maya empire, with the mythical entrance to the underworld, Xibalba, supposedly in the country. While Maya culture still exists in Belize today, the rocky ruins of yesteryear are incredible sites for exploring Maya history.

Ruins are found throughout the country, from the accessible Altun Ha and Lamanai  to the more remote Caracol in Cayo , which remains the tallest human-made structure in Belize.

Each site has a unique story to tell about Maya history and culture, plus breathtaking views and photo opportunities. Other popular ruins include Xunantunich , Cahal Pech and Lubaantun .

2. Scuba dive the Blue Hole Natural Monument

Deep-water enthusiasts know Belize is generally a popular diving destination, but the famous Great Blue Hole may be the most thrilling dive site of them all.

Perched at the center of Lighthouse Atoll on the Belize Barrier Reef, this perfectly round underwater sinkhole provides a dark chasm in which divers can explore a unique ecosystem, with coral, tropical fish and mysterious stalactites up to 400ft down.

Planning tip:  Prefer to stay on the surface? Snorkeling here is also a thrilling adventure, as the wall of the hole is rich with underwater life.

3. Party on Caye Caulker

There's a chilled-out Caribbean vibe on Caye Caulker , where backpackers and younger travelers in particular like to congregate, getting around the dusty island on foot or by bicycle.  The Split beach is the main attraction, thanks to its seaweed-free waters.

Drinks, tunes and a second-floor balcony offering stunning views attract crowds to the Lazy Lizard . Several bars keep the good times rolling into the night, and restaurants including  Pasta Per Caso make sure everyone is well-fed.

A yellow road sign with the outline of a jaguar on it warns that jaguars may be crossing the road through the jungle

4. Search for jaguars in the jungles of Cockscomb

Belize is home to the highest concentration of jaguars in the world and, while they’re extremely difficult to spot, your best chance of making that happen is by exploring  Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary  in the jungles of southern Belize.

Planning tip:   DTOURZ offers daytime and nighttime tours that pack in adventure alongside the jaguar search. Even if no big cats make an appearance, there are lots of other animals to see, including 290 bird species, black howler monkeys and snakes.

5. Go birdwatching with the best

Saying that Belizeans are into birding is an understatement. Belize loves birds, and with more than 500 avian species, such as keel-billed toucans, scarlet macaws and indigo buntings to spot, it’s an ideal destination for birders.

Planning tip:  Most guides have knowledge of local avian life, but head to Black Rock Lodge near San Ignacio to learn from some of Belize’s top birding guides while staying deep within the jungle.

6. Attend a yoga retreat on Ray Caye

A yoga retreat on a private island in the Caribbean is the ultimate wellness vacation.

Throughout the year, Placencia ’s own Brice Dial hosts several of these soul-soothing events – multiday experiences full of yoga, meditation and chakra balancing – at locations including the luxurious Ray Caye Resort , The Rainforest Lodge at Sleeping Giant , The Gaia Riverlodge  and the Tanager Rainforest Lodge .

Planning tip:  Guests at the property can also take advantage of water activities like snorkeling or diving, dine at the delicious Lionfish Grill or take on the island’s famous water slide. Throw in a rejuvenating massage for the perfect weekend recharge.

7. Go fly-fishing at Turneffe Atoll

Belize has an abundance of bonefish, tarpon and permit: the three species of Caribbean fish an angler needs to catch in one day to complete a grand slam.

Resorts such as  Turneffe Island Resort excel at pairing guides with guests for one-of-a-kind fly-fishing excursions in the nearby saltwater flats of the atoll, an experience that connects people with the bounty and beauty of the sea.

A Garifuna troupe performs traditional songs with drumming and dancing in Hopkins village

8. Get in touch with Garifuna culture

At the Lebeha drumming center in Hopkins, visitors to Belize can move to the rhythms of the Garifuna people.

Descendants of an Afro-Indigenous population in the Caribbean, the Garifuna survived enslavement and shipwrecks; they intermarried with the Arawak people of St Vincent, then fled to Belize in the 1800s to avoid persecution.

Planning tip:  If you want to see the best of Garifuna culture, plan to visit on November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day: a celebration of their arrival in Belize, filled with food, dance and drumming.

9. Take a bioluminescence boat tour in Hopkins

Hopkins is a tiny seaside village known for its Garifuna culture during the day and its bioluminescence at night. The light produced by the marine life here is magical, and you can see the phenomenon on a nighttime tour. The whole experience can feel more like a dream than a reality.

Planning tip:  From January to May , when the moon isn’t shining too brightly, Get to Know Belize Adventures operates an evening pontoon safari that brings you into the mangroves to see the glowing marine life.

10. Release a blue morpho butterfly into the wild

Even emoji designers know that blue morphos are the quintessential butterfly species. These cerulean beauties are easily found in Belize’s jungles, as well as at Chaa Creek’s butterfly farm near San Ignacio.

11. Go tubing through a cave

There are many ways to explore Belize’s caves, and one of the most popular is via inner tube, which is also a great way to cool off from the Belizean heat. Hire a guide and gently float through a network of caves lined with crystal rock formations, learn about Maya history and experience the darkness at the network's cavernous center.

Planning tip:  Book a stay at  Caves Branch Jungle Lodge  to take advantage of its many cave-based adventures.

Children riding horses through a river

12. Horseback-ride in the jungle

The Cayo District is cowboy country, just with dense jungle instead of dusty desert towns. Hop in the saddle and head through the rainforest to see waterfalls, mountain vistas and Central American wildlife.

Planning tip:  MET Outfitters  is the country's premier equestrian outfitter and can get you out for a ride.

13. Play anthropologist on the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave tour

Located about 19 miles from San Ignacio, this physically challenging tour into Actun Tunichil Muknal (the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre; ATM) is one of Belize’s most popular and memorable experiences. The ancient Maya believed ATM was the underworld, the aforementioned Xibalba.

Hire a guide from MayaWalk Tours  to take you through the archeological site, which includes skeletal remains with stories to tell. Because someone once dropped their camera right onto a skull, photography is prohibited, so you have to experience it to believe it.

Planning tip:  You'll need to navigate tight spaces and water-filled areas during the three hours you're inside the cave. Tours may be canceled if it’s raining excessively.

14. Spice things up with Marie Sharp’s hot sauce

Tangy and spicy aren’t just adjectives for Belize, but for the country’s beloved hot sauce as well. Marie Sharp’s habanero-based blends have become an international sensation in recent years, electrifying dishes worldwide with their signature Caribbean flavor.

There’s a company factory in the southern town of Dangriga that offers free tours, and hot sauce is found on every table in the country, so sampling a taste won’t be a problem. You can also stop by a local market to purchase travel-size options at a cheaper price – the popular condiment makes for an excellent souvenir to take home.

Planning tip: Factory tours in Dangriga are typically available Monday to Saturday; advance reservation is required.

15. Eat a fry jack

Fry jacks aren’t just a puffed-up slice of tortilla dough – they're the pride and joy of Belizean cuisine. Find these golden pockets throughout the country, sometimes filled with jam and honey and sometimes with beans and cheese (and of course a little Marie Sharp’s).

Whether you like things sweet or savory, be sure to try them at the FryJack House in San Pedro, Pop’s Restaurant  in San Ignacio and Errolyns House of Fry Jacks on Caye Caulker.

Lounge chairs, a woman in a bikini wading in the water, and a boat anchored just off the beach

16. Relax on Secret Beach

Ambergris Caye is the top destination for all of Belize, despite the fact that it's not particularly beachy. Being an island, there’s plenty of waterfront to go around, but as of 10 years ago, finding a beach near the main town of San Pedro was a challenge, other than a few hotel-made spits of sand.

Enter Secret Beach, a rapidly developing spot on the west side of the island, where food, drinks and fun can be found.

Planning tip:  The best way to get there is by renting a golf cart for the 4.5-mile drive north of San Pedro.

17. Explore the jungle on a pontoon boat ride

This off-the-beaten-path experience takes place right on the border of Belize and Guatemala , deep in the jungle. Board a relaxing pontoon boat for a full day’s exploration of Western Belize’s rich jungle ecosystem, where you’re more likely to spot a parrot than a person.

Planning tip:  Jungle Splash Eco-Tours takes guests to see waterfalls and crocodiles, and to swim, climb and hike to their heart’s content.

18. Take a distillery tour at Copalli Rum

Belize is considered part of the Caribbean too, so rum is a given – and Copalli Rum is some of the best in the country. To see how it’s made and give it a taste, head down south to Punta Gorda to the distillery at Copal Tree Lodge .

This remote part of the country is surrounded by rainforest and still very much in touch with its Maya roots. Copalli Rum draws flavor from its environment, resulting in a smooth, strong drink that will delight rum enthusiasts.

19. Cool off at Big Rock Falls

Driving into the Mountain Pine Ridge in the Cayo District to swim at Big Rock Falls is one of the top ways to spend a hot day in Belize. Here you can jump into the water from cliffs, lie on the rocks to soak up the sun and enjoy a picnic lunch. A waterfall massage is an essential Big Rock experience too.

Planning tip:  Reach the small but powerful falls by car, on horseback or on a guided tour.

20. Visit the Belize Zoo

There is so much wildlife to encounter in Belize, from jaguars to tapirs to scarlet macaws, and the easiest place to check off the entire list is at the Belize Zoo . With an animal population predominantly made up of rescued creatures, it’s a great way to explore Belize’s fauna while supporting wildlife rescue efforts.

21. Snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Nurse sharks, sea turtles and eagle rays call the Belize Barrier Reef – the second largest in the world – home, and one of the best places to see them is at Hol Chan Marine Reserve , just off the coast of Ambergris Caye. A day tour snorkeling there is a popular way to get acquainted with both the reef and its inhabitants. Don't miss  Shark Ray Alley .

Note: Belize takes its ecosystem very seriously, so respect any and all rules and regulations when it comes to the environment.

22. Stay in a luxury hotel

Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely known for his films and his wine, but in Belize it’s his boutique luxury hotels – Turtle Inn in Placencia and Blancaneaux Lodge  in the Mountain Pine Ridge – that get people excited. Both resorts are ultra-luxurious, with roomy, creatively decorated bungalows, phenomenal restaurants and a high level of service.

Planning tip:  Pair the properties for a beach and jungle trip – the perfect combination to really experience the best of Belize.

23. Support local artisans at Handmade Belize marketplaces

It’s no surprise that a destination as beautiful as Belize inspires its citizens to create art and handicrafts.

Take a look at the Handmade Belize Instagram account to see clothing, jewelry, artwork and more from Belizean creatives, and to track where and when artisan markets are taking place, so you can add this unique shopping experience to your Belize itinerary.

20 Best Things to Do in Belize, From Barrier Reef Excursions to Cave Tours

Get to know Belize with these suggestions from locals.

excursions to do in belize

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Comprised of more than 400 islands and nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, Belize is home to rainforests, jungles, mountains, rivers, an extensive cave system, and many well-preserved ancient Maya ruins. Adventures on both land and sea make Belize a popular destination, and its beaches and resorts are terrific for visitors who simply want to relax and enjoy the tropical climate . To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well. This list of things to do in Belize features ideas for everyone, from adventurers and history buffs to foodies and travelers looking to chill out on a lounge chair in the sun.

Tour the ancient city of Caracol.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”

Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.

Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.

Fly over the Great Blue Hole on a helicopter tour.

For a birds-eye view, stunning photos, and a thrilling experience, take flight over the Great Blue Hole. Several of our experts suggested this tour, and Benzaquen pointed out that Cayo Espanto “is home to a helipad and partners with a local service provider” for convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Enjoy traditional Belizean dishes.

“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”

Explore the underground caves of Belize.

The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”

Join a tubing tour through the caves.

Cavan Images/Getty Images

Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.

Feast on your own fresh catch.

Heather_Cameron/Getty Images

According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”

Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.

Learn all about chocolate.

The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .

Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

cinoby/Getty Images

“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."

Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.

Joel Sharpe/Getty Images

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.

Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.

“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."

Learn about the Garifuna people.

Karen Brodie/Getty Images

“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Get dive certified.

“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”

Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .

Meet new feathered friends.

Tom Cawthon/Getty Images

Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.

Go on a fishing excursion.

On a half-day or full-day deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll be fishing for tuna, mackerel, marlins, and more. For a more casual day of fishing different spots along the reef, you can choose reef fishing in calmer seas. Ideal for families, the latter trip includes rum punch, snacks, sodas, and lunch. Turneffe Atoll is also a favorite fishing destination.

Get active in the Caribbean Sea.

Once you’ve relaxed on the beach and you’re ready to get wet, it’s time for your favorite activity on the water. “While Ambergris Caye is known for its proximity to the reef for snorkeling and diving, our guests also enjoy other adventurous water activities, including parasailing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, which our concierge is able to organize for them,” says Oba of Alaia Belize .

Visit Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.

JC Cuellar/Getty Images

More than 150 native animals make the 29-acre Belize Zoo their home. Most of the zoo’s residents are rehabilitated or rescued, and they include tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, coatimundi, and more. The fully accessible zoo offers VIP guided tours.

Browse and shop at San Ignacio Market.

Cyrielle Beaubois/Getty Images

Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, this market is set on the banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio. Open every day until 6 p.m., the market gives visitors a true glimpse into Belizean life, with handmade clothing, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale by farmers and local craftsmen. Nearby San Ignacio town offers restaurants, bars, and shops.

Take a sunset cruise on Caye Caulker.

From Daniel and Ilona of Top Travel Sights

Joining a sunset boat tour in Caye Caulker is one of the best things to do in Belize.

It is also one of the most relaxing  activities on Caye Caulker  and the perfect way to end a day.

Sunset cruises usually start around an hour before sunset, so the boat has time to cruise along the coast.

This allows you to enjoy a drink and admire the island’s colourful houses and palm trees from a different perspective.

The cruise then takes you to the western side of the island, where the sun sets.

Here, you can watch the sun go down in the sea as it lights up the sky.

Multiple companies offer boat tours on Caye Caulker, and it pays off to compare offers to see what they include.

Typically, you will have some drinks and snacks included, but there’s also the option of enjoying dinner on the boat.

Go scuba diving in Belize.

From Daria of The Discovery Nut

Located near the second largest barrier reef in the world (the Mesoamerican Reef System or the Great Mayan Reef), Belize is a world-class diving destination.

Diving enthusiasts from all over the world flock to Belize to explore its pristine coral reef and dive in the famous Blue Hole, a large marine sinkhole right off the coast of the country.

The best way to access the Blue Hole and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is from Ambergris Caye, the largest island in Belize.

Many tour companies in San Pedro, the largest town on Ambergris Caye , sell diving tours to Hol Chan Marine Reserve (which means a small channel in the Mayan language), and if you have never dived before, you can get your diving certification here as well.

There are daily flights to Ambergris Caye from Belize International Airport that take about 20 minutes.

If you are traveling on a budget, you can also catch a taxi to the boat terminal and take a boat from there to San Pedro, the largest city on Ambergris Caye which will take about 40 minutes to 1 hour.

Regardless of how you choose to travel, scuba diving is, hands down, one of the best Belize attractions, and it belongs at the top of your Belize bucket list!

Swim with stingrays and (nurse) sharks at Shark Ray Alley.

One of the best activities in Belize is take a boat tour out to Shark Ray Alley, located only about 10 minutes by boat from Caye Caulker.

This part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to a cornucopia of nurse sharks and stingrays, which you’ll have the opportunity to swim and snorkel with.

Tours usually last about 2 hours, and tour companies will provide snorkels and masks, and life jackets for the boat.

The nurse sharks and stingrays are safe to swim with, and fascinating to watch.

Do your research on which company to take the tour with, as there are several offering the trip from Caye Caulker, with varying ethical practices.

Some tour guides feed the sharks to ensure they come out, but this is wildly irresponsible as it upsets their natural ecosystems.

Always ask about their sustainability policy before committing to a tour company for this fun Belize attraction.

Enjoy a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole.

From Jenifer of The Evolista

Belize is a unique travel destination with many natural landmarks that will blow you away, but nothing compares to the Great Blue Hole.

While it’s on every diver’s Belize bucket list, a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole is the only way to actually see it.

From the water, it just looks like the (beautiful) ocean.

One of the best places to catch a scenic flight is the popular tourist island Ambergris Caye, where tourists flock year round to enjoy the crystal clear waters and amazing reef.

You’ll get a bird’s eye view of those amazing coral reefs when you take off.

The flight to the Great Blue Hole takes 15 minutes and then the pilot will circle it three times in both directions for a one hour total trip.

Every person has their own window seat and a fantastic view to get tons of photos.

The excursion is a little on the expensive side but worth every penny to experience one of the top attractions in Belize.

Go snorkeling in Caye Caulker.

From Joanna of The World in My Pocket

Caye Caulker is one of the most beautiful and laid-back islands in Belize.

It is known for the slow pace of life and the fresh lobsters most of the restaurants on the island serve.

There are no cars on the island, only a few golf carts, a few mopeds, and plenty of bicycles.

One of the best things to do in Caye Caulker is go snorkeling in the Hol Chan marine reserve and the Belize Barrier Reef – the second largest reef in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

There are two types of tours which you can book if you want to go  snorkeling in Caye Caulker : half a day or full day.

Depending on what you go for, the itinerary will differ.

Some tours will include trips to see manatees and turtles, whilst some will only include the shark alley.

No matter which tour you go for, there will be plenty of things to see on the snorkeling trip.

The reef is home to many different species of fish, Moray eels, nurse sharks, Manta rays, and plenty of gorgeous corals.

At the end of the trip, most boats head over to the other side of Caye Caulker, where the protected giant tarpons live.

Take a day trip to Laughing Bird Caye National Park.

From Nikki of She Saves She Travels

If you’re looking for a guide on things to do in Belize, then a visit to  Laughing Bird Caye  must be on your list!

With gorgeous white sand beaches and the perfect turquoise water, this tiny island is a must see!

Located off the coast of Belize near Placencia, Laughing Bird Caye National Park is a protected area available to visitors only through day tours.

It’s the perfect snorkeling spot, as it’s located on the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System which is the 2 nd  largest reef zone in the world.

Expect a day trip to Laughing Bird Caye to include snorkeling gear, lunch and drinks and lounge chairs.

Bring your own towel, cocktails (if you’d like them) and your favorite camera to take photos of this magical place in Belize.

It’s bound to be a day to remember!

Spend a night (or more) on a private island.

One of the best things that you can do in Belize is rent The Enclave , a private island resort near Placencia.

Renting the Enclave for a week is actually more affordable than you might expect if divided between a large number of guests.

For the beauty, serenity, luxury and unparalleled service, it is quite frankly an must- do experience in Belize waiting for you to try.

Go caving with the dead at Belize’s ATM Cave.

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Belize is touring the ATM Cave .

This is the #1 reason that many travelers visit San Ignacio (us included), and this adventurous Belize attraction is not to be missed.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is a sacred Mayan historical site, and the name translates to “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher.”

The Mayans believe caves to be the opening to the underworld, and remains of offerings as simple as corn in clay pots and as brutal as the full skeleton of a human sacrifice victim can be seen right where they were left long ago–give or take a little water movement.

This is a wet cave and essentially has two major draws in one tour: first, the Mayan history and relics, and second, the adventure portion.

The natural formations are stunning, and the obstacles–from climbing a roughly 15 ft. rock to reach a new room to squeezing into a tunnel so tight that rock touches your neck on both sides at the entrance–make this the perfect place to get adrenaline racing.

Be prepared to get wet, get a workout in, see some unforgettable sites… and to  not  get any photos of it.

Absolutely no cameras are allowed in the ATM Cave, so come prepared to keep only memories.

Try cave tubing.

From Kylie of Between England and Iowa

Cave tubing in Belize is a unique way to experience Belize and a great way to enjoy the natural landscape.

Tours typically start with a short hike, maybe 25 minutes or so, through the rainforest with all of the gear for the float.

Tubes, helmets, head torches, and life vests are provided.

During the walk there are lots of different flora and fauna, there’s even a monkey troupe that calls the area home.

The river float lasts for around 1 hour 30, the tubes are all tied together in a train formation while floating through the caves.

The caves are significant in the Mayan faith.

The guide will point out various rock formations that represent animals and figures in the Mayan stories and myths.

Cave tubing can be combined with other activities such as zip-lining, ATV riding, or a visit to ‘Altun Ha’ Mayan ruins.

For something a bit more strenuous, you could opt for booking a kayaking tour of the caves rather than a float.

Visit the other Blue Hole of Belize.

From Kat of World Wide Honeymoon

You likely already know all about the famous Great Blue Hole in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

It is well-known for diving, boating, and snorkeling.

However, did you know that there is a blue hole in the middle of Belize too?

Essentially, Belize’s inland blue hole is a cenote.

So if you’re familiar with cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula , then that is exactly what you’ll find here at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park.

It is a sinkhole made from limestone collapsing and exposing the groundwater underneath.

Many people today love to visit them as they tend to result in an incredible swimming hole in the jungle!

Located near Belmopan, the capital of Belize, this national park has two caves (perfect for cave tubing!) as well as this big blue hole.

You can go for a swim and cool off in this relaxing blue hole as you admire the bright hue of the water.

It is a perfect addition to any Belize itinerary !

So whether you want to swim, float, go spelunking , or take photos for the ‘gram, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park is an unmissable attraction in Belize!

Step inside the Rio Frio Cave.

From Melissa of Parenthood and Passports

Rio Frio Cave, located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in western Belize, is one of the most easily accessible cave systems in the small Central American country.

One of the only dry caves in Belize, a visit to Rio Frio Cave does not involve swimming or wading through water or any strenuous hiking.

This makes Rio Frio one of the best attractions in Belize to visit with kids.

The approach walking up to the cave is nothing short of jaw dropping.

The mouth of the cave is a 65-foot limestone arch that greets guests just a short walk from the parking lot.

Like many caves in Belize, Rio Frio is believed to have been a sacred burial site for the ancient Maya.

And while it isn’t as well known as many of the other Mayan ruins in Belize , archaeologists have discovered Mayan relics in the cave, which confirm the cave’s historic purpose.

You can follow the shallow river all the way through the quarter mile cave, or wander near the entrance and gaze at the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over the centuries.

Explore the Mayan city of Caracol.

From Daniel of Layer Culture

The prehistoric Mayan city of Caracol is both the biggest and one of the most well-preserved ancient Maya cities in Belize.

For any traveler looking for a magical experience that will take them away from the sandy shores to a remote archaeological site, visiting Caracol is one of the top things to do in Belize.

Located within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve just 40km from San Ignacio the hieroglyphic inscriptions that can be found amongst the gigantic pyramids tell a story of an ancient civilization from which 180,000 people once lived.

Jungle vacation packages can be found as well as 2-3 day hiking trips that give visitors a full expedition tour.

When considering personal safety in Belize with visiting Caracol in mind, be well prepared and have the right gear to be able to withstand the dense Jungle climate.

Attend the Placencia Lobsterfest.

From Tanya of Can Travel Will Travel

Belize is famous for its festivals, of which there are many throughout the year.

One of the most popular is the three-day Lobsterfest, held annually to mark the start of the Lobster season.

It’s held on different weekends in different cities to avoid clashes, but the best (at least according to the locals), is in Placencia.

Tourists and Belizeans arrive from all over the country to devour mountains of lobster dishes made every which way, including grilled lobster, lobster ceviche, lobster thermidor and lobster kebabs.

People are also encouraged to help the environment by dining on lionfish dishes, in an attempt to reduce numbers of the invasive species.

Visitors come to Lobsterfest for the food, but stay for the entertainment and fun.

There’s all day and night long beach parties with live music, well stocked bars, games, contests and competitions, and arts and crafts.

Placencia Lobsterfest is definitely an experience to include in your itinerary if you’re in Belize in June, there are also plenty of other  exciting things to do in Placencia  to keep you busy for a while.

Climb to the top of a Mayan temple at Xunantunich.

From Sean of Living Out Lau

One of the most impressive Maya archaeological sites to visit in Belize is Xunantunich , or “Maiden of the Rock” in the Maya language.

From the archaeological findings, it is believed the Xunantunich was a civic ceremonial center.

Perched over a hilltop overlooking the Mopan River, Xunantunich has a total of 25 temples and palaces, and excavation is still happening today.

Out of all the temples in Xunantunich, there is one that you must visit: El Castillo.

Translating to “The Castle” in English, El Castillo is the second-tallest structure in Belize at around 40 meters (130 feet) tall.

Unlike many of the Mayan ruins, it is possible to go up the El Castillo, where you will find sweeping views of the nearby valley.

Visiting Xunantunich is one of the things you must do in San Ignacio !

Explore the Cahal Pech Ruins.

Located within walking distance of San Ignacio, Cahal Pech is one of the easiest Mayan ruin sites in Belize to visit for those already planning a trip nearby (though, admittedly, the walk to Cahal Pech from San Ignacio is uphill).

This beautiful, shaded ruin site dates back to 1200 BCE, and at its peak, was home to between 10,000 and 15,000 people.

It’s lovely to explore on foot, and the shade throughout much of the complex is very welcome in the heat.

The name itself translates to “Place of Ticks”, which is admittedly not the most appealing name in the world–but the city itself, overlooking San Ignacio and Santa Elena, was important to trade routes in its time, and is one of the oldest Mayan cities in Belize.

Visit the Green Iguana Conservation Project.

At the Iguana Sanctuary in San Ignacio, Belize, you’ll have a chance to learn far more about the lizards that you’ll no doubt see every day when visiting Belize.

Here, you can hold and feed the iguanas while learning more about the conservation of this fascinating threatened species.

The project is based out of the gorgeous San Ignacio Resort Hotel , which also happens to be a fantastic place to stay while exploring San Ignacio!

Ride in a chicken bus.

Chicken buses (converted North American school buses) are common across Central America, and Belize is no exception.

For long rides, the buses cannot be considered particularly comfortable, but they are an extremely memorable cultural experience and definitely worth trying it!

Chicken buses between the most popular places to visit in Belize are generally a great place to meet other travelers, and not as hot as expected (open windows make everything better).

We had great experiences with chicken buses across Central America, and Belize was our first place to try them out.

It took a little getting used to, having the money handler on the bus find out where we were going and say things like, “Here, get off at this deserted corner and the right bus will pick you up in 5 minutes”–but they were always right and we didn’t have any trouble getting around.

You will have a 15-minute break to change your outfit, then it’s off to Hol Chan, which is a good 10 minutes away on a boat from Caye Caulker.  You will have the enjoyment of snorkeling for 45 minutes at the Hol Chan Reserve where you will witness the astonishing Coral Gardens with all kinds of fish, stingrays, and sea turtles.  Snacks and a delicious Rum punch will await you afterward.

#2 Underground Cave Tubing in Belize

Belize’s one-of-a-kind underground cave is a perfect adventure and is one of the most sought-after excursions in Belize. Our quick departure with a large group can sometimes dodge the crowds of the cruise ship passengers taking the bus ride which usually takes up plenty of time.

excursions to do in belize

After you meet your tour operators and tour guide for the Belize excursion, you will make your way to your transportation (air-conditioned) for about an hour-long drive to Caves Branch River via the Mayan mountains’ winding path and a handful of ancient caves. You will make your trip down to the river after getting your tube. This will be where you will end your float.

While grabbing onto a rope that is strung across a tree, you will wade through the river. Then you will walk across the Belize jungle for about 30 minutes on loose gravel.  For this part of the trip, you have to be fit and able to keep up with your guide.

Before entering the clear waters, you will be given miner’s lamps by your guide upon entering the underground crystal cave. From there you will be floating along with a gentle current through the cave. What really makes the cave an attraction is the sophisticated line-up of crystalline formations and the stalactites and stalagmites that can be found rising and falling.

Depending on the cave’s current, the trip usually lasts for about 2 hours, then you will be brought back to where you started.  After the floating session is done, you make your way back to the vehicle to be transported back to the pier.

#3 Barrier Reef Snorkel

Go on an adventure off Belize’s coast and enjoy the island of the barrier reef and Caye Caulker marine reserve when opting to go with this excursion tour. The tour includes a half-day venture into Belize’s barrier reef. Here you will find amazing creatures such as stingrays, eels, and all sorts of fish. You’ll be going on a trip to explore Caye Caulker. This excursion is for the sea lover and the born traveler.

excursions to do in belize

A ride to the Belize barrier reef will start your journey. Being a part of the biggest systems of coral reefs in the globe, the Belize barrier reef is home to a flourishing marine ecosystem. Here you will be enjoying snorkeling and exploring the warm waters of the coral reef and all its glory. This includes all kinds of hard and soft corals as well as eels and nurse sharks at the shark ray alley.

Proceed with your excursion to the 2 nd biggest island off Belize’s mainland. This coral island made of limestone might only be 5 square miles in measurement, but it’s filled with history and beautiful tourist spots. Caye Caulker houses an underwater cave, magnificent beaches, and private shops that give the island a relaxing small-town feel. It’s the right spot for taking a break when done snorkeling.

May it be basking in the glory of marine life or chilling on the shores of the beach, you’ll see that this is more than just another island getaway. And these are the best places to be during the early morning.

#4 Belize Zip Line and Cave Tubing

Your zip line canopy tour begins as soon as you are fetched by your capable tour guides from the Belize Cruise Port (cruise line docking point) and taken to the city of Belize for a scenic tour. Take some time to notice the colonial architecture and other highlights of the city. Then drive by small villages and farms at the Creole villages when on a great way to Nohoch Che’ en Archaeological Reserve .

excursions to do in belize

Once you arrive, your tour guide will take you to the facility of the zip line. Here, you’ll be properly equipped with a safety helmet, harness, and gloves. You’ll be taken to the platform of the zip line as you go through 5 different lines over trees, feeling all the adrenaline, after a quick instruction. After you’ve seen the tropical rainforests from above, you’ll be suited with an adjustable headlamp, a helmet, a life jacket, and an inner tube for the tour’s cave tubing part. After they brief you on certain skills for tubing, you’ll be guided through the beautiful forest and a cave of wonders, where Mayans believed that their ancestors and deities lived. The guide will also show you some animals and plants that are native to the area.

Upon reaching the Caves Branch River, you will venture through the forest via tubing for about an hour in a mix of rapid and calm currents. If the conditions are favorable, you may even float into the systems of the cave part of the waterfalls. You will enter a chamber as big as a cathedral and listen to your echoes as you gaze at astonishing stalagmites, stalactites, and limestone structures.

After your trip to the tubing portion, you’ll be taken to one of the local restaurants where you will have a selection of Belize’s local delicacies such as rice, stewed chicken, and beans as well as banana bread. All are available at prices for use with the Belize dollar. The lunch, however, is optional and does not come with the tour’s package deal. In addition, you will take a trip to the grounds where you will enjoy the sacred Guanacaste trees and coconut palms before going back to the port.

It is important to note that the tubing portion may not be available should the water level in the river rise to the flooding point inside the cave. Should this happen, a visit to the Altun Ha Mayan Ruin and the ancient Mayan temples will be a replacement for that part of the tour.

#5 And Ancient Mayan Ruin of Xunantunich

For this amazing tour in Belize, you will have to bring your walking shoes and get ready to go back to the past, as you will explore the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. These ruins are prime examples of the Mayan period. This area had a big earthquake but was vacated sometime around 900 A.D.

excursions to do in belize

Xunantunich is the modern name of the area and is Mayan for “ Stone Woman “. Legend has it that the ghost of a woman routinely appears in front of the El Castillo pyramid structure, which ascends the steps and literally disappears into a stone wall.

Belize’s 2 nd tallest structure, the El Castillo pyramid measures 130 feet in height. The perfect way up is to follow in the footsteps of the stone woman, climbing to the top where there is a beautiful view of the Macal, Mopan, and the river valleys of Belize. After you interpret the stucco friezes on the walls that depict the tree of life and other various deities, it’s time to enjoy a local Belizean lunch before going back to the city.

#6 Half Moon Caye Excursions

There are few activities that are more fun than sailing a Hobie Cat off the waters of Half Moon Caye. Apart from sailing a Hobie Cat, there are more amusing activities when you are enjoying the waters of Half Moon Caye. Whether you are a pro or a newbie when it comes to sailing catamarans, you’ll be certain that Half Moon Caye’s Hobie Cats are worth seeing.

excursions to do in belize

The benefits of this private excursion include a montage of how to sail with the Hobie Cat for the newbies, enjoying the ride whether the winds are strong or gentle, having quality time with your family, and just forgetting about everything else for an hour with the sea. The only con is that time goes by real fast on these shore tours.

#7 Ambergris Caye and Belize Cruise Excursions

Spanning 25 miles long and roughly a mile wide from side to side, Ambergris Caye is the largest among the other 200 islands, this includes Goff’s Caye, on Belize’s coast. European Pirates, Mayans, and Mexican refugees that came here during the span of the Caste war are some of the histories on the cay. Its descendants make up most of the city’s population.

For this excursion, you will be delivered to the airport where you will get on a Cessna Caravan and fly for 20-minutes over a beautiful scene. Being 1500 feet above the ground, you will see the 2 nd largest barrier reef in the world and a handful of islands.

Once you land on  San Pedro Ambergris Caye, you will be given roughly 4.5 hours to see the island, shop for some goods and souvenirs, enjoy delicious local cuisine, and have a relaxing stay at the beach for your beach break. You will also find out why it was called “the Caribbean of Old”. This is one of the best things you can do in San Pedro.

#8 Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

Constructed for the sole purpose of protecting birds both resident and migrant, the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary can be found about 33 miles northwest of Belize City and approximately 2 miles from the Northern Highway. This is made up of a big network of lagoons, waterways, and swamps.

excursions to do in belize

The sanctuary is a shelter that gives both abundant sources of food and proper resting grounds, which is necessary for birds of diverse populations.  Belize Tours Unlimited can give you a Crooked Tree Bird Sanctuary Tour that will take you through an adventure to the Crooked Tree Bird Sanctuary. At the Belize Tourism Village, you will be met by tour guides where you will ride a van and take a scenic tour going to the reserve. In addition to this, you have the option of going horseback riding while looking at magnificent birds.

#9 Belize City and Zoo Combo

Nature lovers get close and see the wonderful animals waiting for you at the Belize Zoo! After you take a tour of the city of Belize, which includes its Government House , Supreme Court Building, and St. John’s Cathedral, then you can go visit the Belize Zoo for a short time.

Once you go inside the tropical savanna spanning 84 acres known as the Belize Zoo, you will learn about its history. The zoo was founded in 1983 and houses up to 150 animals, many of which were orphaned, rehabilitated, rescued, or received from other zoos. The habitat allows animals to live as if they never left their natural settings while you have access to an up-close view. Before all the watching starts you will be briefed by the zoo manager. Belize is also home to a community baboon sanctuaries and howler monkeys.

excursions to do in belize

Next, you’ll have the view of the clock tower at the supreme court building, which was constructed in 1962 right on the very grounds of the previous courthouse which was destroyed by a fire years earlier. This tour is fun and the best way to experience the city tour.

Accommodations

If there is one thing that Belize has, it is lots of accommodations for people who want to visit this island paradise. From Airbnb’s to hotels, to everything in between. We stayed at two places while we were there: Xanadu Island Resort and Victoria House . They were both excellent. In fact, they both had a nice swimming pool, bicycles, and a golf cart to take you around. They were completely different but we like both hotels. With a swing bridge, our kids played for hours, so we called it a perfect day.

Make your day tour to Belize come true and contact: Island Marketing ltd. for all your needs. They help individuals or small groups.

All great things must come to an end, it is time to go back to the airport and fly back to Belize.

Two large ancient pyramids - Exploring Maya ruins is one of the best things to do in Belize

1. Explore Ancient Mayan Ruins

You can’t travel to Belize without visiting at least a few ancient Mayan ruins! There are dozens of ruins scattered throughout Belize – each one more fascinating than the last.

Compared to nearby Mexico and Guatemala , Belize receives so few tourists every year, that you’ll often have these amazing archaeological sites all to yourself … If you don’t count the howler monkeys, toucans, and jaguars hanging out in the surrounding jungles.

The best ruins sites to check out in Belize are:

  • Xunantunich (One of the most impressive archaeological sites in Belize, Xunantunich is located in Western Belize near the border with Guatemala. Far away from everything, but worth the trek.)
  • Cahal Pech (Ruins dating back to 1200 BCE. Easy to access, Cahal Pech is located in the town of San Ignacio Town.)
  • Lamanai (Features the impressive Mask Temple , Lamanai is a former Mayan city, located in Northern Belize, in the Orange Walk District)
  • Caracol (One of the largest archaeological sites in Central America, Caracol was once one of the most powerful Maya cities, until it was abandoned in 900 CE. Located in the Cayo District, about 50 miles south of San Ignacio.)
  • Altun Ha (Close to the coast, Altun Ha is an easy day trip from Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, as well as Belize City. There, you’ll find the Green Tomb .)

If you can, I recommend renting a car during your time on mainland Belize , so you can easily explore the archeological sites, jungles, and nature reserves in your own time!

2. Eat Traditional Belizean Food

I’m obsessed with Belizean food! As any foodie knows, the cuisine of a country is often reflective of its history and demographics. Belize is no exception.

Just like its population, the cuisine of Belize is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. Each ethnic group brought its own unique cooking styles, techniques, and spices to the table, making Belizean cuisine some of the most flavorful, colorful, and unique in the world.

With Maya, Mestizo, Afro-Caribbean, East Indian, and British influences, there’s a lot to discover… And it’s all delicious .

If you’re familiar with Mexican cuisine, you’ll recognize some of the Maya- and Mestizo-influenced dishes like tamales , cochinita pibil , and salbutes (which are like tostadas).

But there’s so much more to explore! Other popular dishes include rice and beans , stewed chicken , plantains , and lots of seafood . (Hello, juicy, gigantic lobsters. I love you.)

If you’re staying in Ambergris Caye, consider this Premium Private Fishing, Snorkeling and Beach Cookout Tour so you can experience a sea-to-table Belizean meal!

3. Feast at the Lobster Festival in Placencia Village

The Placencia Lobsterfest is a must-attend event for any lobster lover. It all started in 1998, when the organizers set up a single table with the hope of drawing more visitors to the area and improving the local economy.

Fast forward to today, and the festival has grown into one of Belize’s biggest festivals , attracting thousands of attendees from around the world. Go, and you’ll find an unbelievable variety of lobster dishes: from traditional lobster pies and grilled lobster tails to fusion dishes like lobster fajitas and lobster pizza.

There’s also live music, a fully stocked bar, and dozens of other food vendors serving up mouthwatering Belizean specialties – including lionfish.

4. Celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day

Celebrated every year on November 19th, Garifuna Settlement Day is a party you won’t want to miss!

Think: Rhythmic drumming, singing, and traditional dancing. Locals donning colorful outfits. Street parties, boat parades. And plenty of traditional food. The excited energy is infectious. If you’re lucky enough to be in Belize during Garifuna Day, you’ll be in for an amazing cultural experience you won’t soon forget.

The best places to be for this cultural celebration are either Hopkins Village or Dangriga – with Placencia Village there as a good third option!

5. Experience the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and undoubtedly Belize’s most precious attraction – and one of the top reasons to visit Belize .

When it comes to underwater adventures, few places compare to Belize. This country in Central America is home to the world’s second-largest barrier reef (after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef ). Though in my opinion, it’s far more lively, colorful, and impressive, making it a true underwater paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers alike.

The clear, warm waters offer excellent visibility, and the abundance of marine life is truly breathtaking. Whether you’re exploring a shipwreck or swimming with stingrays or turtles, there’s no shortage of excitement beneath the waves in Belize.

Grab your mask and fins and dive into an underwater adventure you’ll never forget!

6. Get Scuba Certified

As I mentioned, Belize is spoiled with some of the most incredible coral reefs on the planet… So I can’t think of a better place to get scuba certified!

Dedicate three to five days of your vacation in Belize to getting certified and you’ll reap the benefits for the rest of your time in Belize – and your life! Just imagine all of the underwater experiences you’ll unlock.

The Blue Hole is calling!

Where to stay for a scuba diving certification course:

  • Blue Marlin Beach Resor t (South Water Caye)
  • Huracan Diving Lodge (Long Caye)

7. Scuba Dive in the Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is Belize’s most insane dive site.

This massive underwater sinkhole is over 300 meters wide and 124 meters deep. It’s a little eerie, considering how dark it gets as you descend… and the strange deep-water creatures you’ll encounter. You’ll meet more than just reef sharks and turtles down there, that’s for sure.

If you’re an experienced diver, the Great Blue Hole should be #1 on your Belize bucket list. It’s one of the best things to do in Belize – if not the best!

8. Snorkel in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Dive into the world of magnificent coral reefs and marine life at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, just off the coast of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

This natural wonder boasts an incredible variety of underwater plant and animal life and is the perfect place to go for a snorkeling tour. With its crystal-clear waters, endless schools of fish, and rainbow-colored coral reef, Hol Chan is truly a tropical ocean dream.

The reserve is also an important nesting ground for several endangered species of sea turtles and an awesome place to swim with these majestic creatures up close.

Here are the best Hol Chan Marine Reserve guided tours!

9. Swim with Sharks in Shark Ray Alley

As its name suggests, plenty of sharks and small stingrays patrol Shark Ray Alley (which is located one mile south of the Hol Chan cut).

If you want to get up close and personal with these beautiful animals, here’s your chance. (And don’t worry, they’re only harmless nurse sharks ! So you’ll most likely live to tell the tale.)

But that’s not all. In Shark Ray Alley, you’ll also see majestic sea turtles, ferocious barracuda, and a variety of other colorful fish.

Here are the best Shark Ray Alley tours!

10. Take Flight over the Belize Barrier Reef

The ultimate Belize bucket list item (in my eyes, anyway!) is taking flight over the reef and the Great Blue Hole. The views from the helicopter of turquoise waters, coral reefs, white-sand beaches, and lush rainforests below will steal your breath away.

The experience is absolutely insane. And pricy. But oh-so-worth-it. There aren’t any adequate words for how special this experience is!

And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can also go skydiving over the reef! I’ll leave that to you, though. If you do, report back.

Especially if you don’t mind luxury accommodation at an affordable price!

12. “Go Slow” on Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is Ambergris Caye’s less-visited, more budget-friendly little sister. There are no cars on this small, laid-back island – only golf carts!

It’s the perfect place to chill out, enjoy the “go slow” pace of island life, soak up the Caribbean sun, drink a few Belikins (local Belizean beer), and let loose at a reggae bar. This island definitely has more fun, backpacker vibes happening.

Caye Caulker is famous for its seafood, and there are endless waterfront restaurants to choose from, serving up fresh lobster, crab, and conch dishes. (Heaven!)

Caye Caulker is even closer to the reef’s best diving and snorkeling spots, making it the perfect place to book a few different excursions from.

13. Experience Garifuna Culture in Hopkins Village

Known as the friendliest seaside village in Belize, Hopkins is easily my favorite place to stay in the entire country!

While the beaches are not the best ever, Hopkins is the perfect place to visit if you want to live slowly, and experience the amazing Garifuna people, their rich culture, and rustic village vibes. The local food is also fantastic .

One of my favorite memories in Hopkins was going on a fishing trip with a local man named Patrick. (Everyone knows him, just ask around if you want to go fishing! You’ll probably find him in the marina.) We caught a few fish, and that night, the caretaker of our rental home, Marta, offered to cook us a feast of local dishes, including fresh fish. Amazing. The warm locals and their food are what make Hopkins the best destination in the country – in my opinion!

Hopkins is centrally located, making it a great hub for exploring more of the mainland, the jungle, and the cayes just off the coast.

1000 Foot Falls surrounded by pine trees in the Cayo District of Belize - exploring this area is one of the best things to do in Belize.

15. Stay at an Eco-Resort in the Cayo District

If you want to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature, then stay at an ecolodge in the Cayo District !

At an ecolodge, you’ll wake to the sounds of the jungle canopy. You’ll hike through the jungles, swim in watering holes, kayak down rivers, get massages, and eat delicious Belizean food. And fall asleep to the sounds of cicadas, rushing water, raindrops, and rustling leaves. What more could you ask for?

My favorite eco-lodges in Belize are:

  • Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge
  • Table Rock Jungle Lodge
  • The Lodge at Chaa Creek

No doubt, staying at an ecolodge is the best way to experience the wondrous natural beauty of Belize!

16. Spend the Night on a Private Island

One of the most luxurious things you can do in Belize? Oh, you know, just staying on a private island!

If you have a big group or a special occasion, this can be an especially amazing experience – and surprisingly affordable too (in some cases).

private islands you can stay on include:

17. Actun Tunichil Muknal – ATM Cave

If you’re looking for a crazy adventure, then spelunking in the underworld – AKA the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM Cave) in Belize is definitely for you. This cave is a living museum and Maya archaeological site, guarding many ancient artifacts (and even skeletons!) that have been calcified into the earth.

You’ll need to take a guided tour to the ATM Cave, where you’ll learn about the ancient Maya rituals and ceremonies performed there, including bloodletting offerings, food offerings, and human sacrifices. Archaeologists have discovered 15 human remains within the cave, five of which are still visible.

The journey to get to the cave is also half the fun! You’ll have to hike, swim, crawl, climb up and over boulders, and really push yourself. Once you reach the cave, you’ll be rewarded with stunning rock formations and a feeling of awe at the history that’s hidden beneath the ground!

No doubt, the ATM Cave is a top Belize attraction and one of the best things you can do during your trip! Click here to book your tour from San Ignacio.

hiking in belize at the cokscomb wildlife sanctuary, one of the most amazing things to do in the country

18. Hike in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature lover’s paradise. Hiking trails through dense jungle give way to waterfalls, swimming holes, and insane views of the Maya Mountains all the way to the Caribbean Sea.

Expect to see colorful birds, playful monkeys, and even the occasional jaguar – if you’re there early in the AM, super quiet, and lucky AF.

The sanctuary also contains remnants of a Maya city that was once inhabited by over 20,000 people. With its combination of natural wonders and cultural treasures, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is truly a place like no other.

swimming hole in mayflower bocawina national park

19. Explore the Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Mayflower Bocawina is my favorite national park in Belize! Located just outside of Hopkins Village, on the eastern edge of the Maya Mountains, this park is easy to get to, but not as busy as some of the other parks and reserves!

An amazing (and to be honest, dangerous!) hiking spot, Mayflower Bocawina National Park offers a variety of trails, from mild to kick-your-ass-difficult with steep inclines, so make sure you come prepared with essentials and a good pair of hiking boots .

Highlights of Mayflower Bocawina are definitely Antelope Falls (SO worth the treacherous climb!), New Waterfall, Maya ruins, ziplining , rappelling down the waterfalls (if you haven’t had enough of an adrenaline rush yet!), and the endless nature.

As with every park in Belize, keep your eyes and ears peeled for the sights and sounds of the rainforest as you explore, and you might be lucky enough to spot the elusive jaguar in its natural habitat. Especially if you go at dawn!

If rappelling and ziplining sounds like a good idea, book this tour: Jungle Canopy Zipline & Waterfall Rappelling – Bocawina Falls

cave in belize - one of the most fun things to do is cave tubing

20. Go Cave Tubing and Spelunking

If you haven’t been spelunking (cave exploring) before, then you’re in for a treat. Beyond the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM Cave) , there are so many other really cool caves to discover.

And there are lots of different methods of exploring them as well. On foot is obvious. But cave tubing is also a popular and super fun way to get around these caverns. Kayaking is another.

Anyone who’s been to Belize knows that you can’t skip the ATM Cave (see #17 above). But this Xunantunich and Cave Tubing tour and this Cave Kayaking & Zipline tour are also worth checking out, if you have the time!

21. Green Iguana Conservation Project

According to TripAdvisor, visiting the Green Iguana Conservation Project is the #1 thing to do in San Ignacio. Since ’96, the San Ignacio Resort Hotel has been at the forefront of efforts to protect the threatened green iguanas, who play a vital role in the ecological balance of Belize’s river habitat.

Go there, and take a closer look at these magnificent creatures. You’ll learn about the project iguana incubation, hatching, rearing, and releasing processes.

The Green Iguana Conservation Project also has an “Adopt an Iguana Program,” which raises money for the organization – and also provides scholarships to local kiddos!

For sure, visiting the Project is an amazing way to give back to a country that gives its visitors so much!

22. Take a Day Trip to Laughing Bird Caye National Park

Nestled off the coast of Placencia, Laughing Bird Caye National Park is an island paradise for nature lovers and an easy day trip.

Named after a population of laughing gulls that used to breed there, Laughing Bird Caye National Park is the home turf of a thriving population of birds and other wildlife, including parrots, pelicans, herons, and iguanas. While the on-land nature is stunning, the real star of the show is the coral reef, which teems with colorful fish and vibrant coral.

Go there, snorkel or dive, or simply relax on the beautiful white sand beaches and soak up the rays. As one of the top attractions in Belize, you can’t miss this!

23. Explore the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, which is located in the cooler highlands of the Cayo District, is one of Belize’s most popular reserves. And for good reason!

The largest and oldest protected forested area in Belize , the reserve offers up some of the most spectacular flora and fauna in the country, including towering pine forests (instead of palm trees!), cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, Maya temples, natural swimming pools, plenty of nature trails, and exotic birds.

It’s safe to say that visiting the Mountain Pine Ridge is a must-do in Belize!

24. Spelunk in the Rio Frio Cave

If you haven’t had enough cave adventuring yet, then add the Rio Frio Cave to your Belize bucket list. It’s one of the most exciting things to do in Belize!

This massive limestone cave (about 1/4-mile-long!) is one of the many natural wonders found in the Mountain Pine Ridge. The cave was a sacred Maya burial site, and today, it is considered one of the best and most easily accessed cave systems in Belize .

While it’s not for the faint of heart, venture inside and you will be rewarded with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, boulders for climbing, epic photo ops, and cool respite from the heat of the Belizean sun.

Be sure to bring a headlamp. And be careful, a river flows through the cave, so the floor can be very slippery in places!

25. Visit the Belize Zoo

More a wildlife sanctuary than anything else, the Belize Zoo was established in 1983 as a last resort to give a home and a life to lots of wild animals that were used to create documentaries about tropical jungles .

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is now the home of over 200 native animals, representing more than 45 species. These animals were all either orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, or are being rehabilitated.

If you weren’t lucky enough to see them in the wild, you’ll have the opportunity to encounter animals like coatimundis, tapirs, ocelots, boa constrictors, howler monkeys, tree frogs, and pumas. You’ll love the experience… while supporting a good cause.

26. Visit the Blue Hole Cenote

This may be a little confusing, but… There is more than one Blue Hole in Belize! But this time, I’m talking about a fresh-water cenote , in the middle of the jungle!

Within the St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park , located just off the Hummingbird Highway, near Belmopan, you’ll find the inland Blue Hole. This park stretches over 500 acres and features two cave systems, amazing bird-watching various walking and hiking trails, and of course, the cool blue jungle swimming pool that the park is named after!

Mexico isn’t the only country with beautiful cenotes! Go for a hike and a swim in the Blue Hole National Park if you’re in the area.

27 Visit the Belize Botanic Gardens

A lush landscape spread over 45 acres, visiting the Belize Botanic Gardens is a beautiful way to spend an afternoon. The gardens are focused on protecting the unique biodiversity in Belize and provide education programs to locals to support knowledge of the landscape. They also have a great horticulture course which teaches skills that can then be used to support employment in landscaping and gardening.

Explore the tropical fruit orchard to find fruit you might never have seen anywhere before, wander the Mayan medicine trail, and visit a traditional Mayan house. Of course, the house is not an original but it is made using ancient techniques from materials found in the gardens and is a great example of a Maya site.

The gardens offer guided tours every day, and have plenty of spots to stop and enjoy a picnic.

Quick Tips for Belize

  • HOTEL : I use this website to score amazing deals on accommodation worldwide. There are some incredible hotel options in Belize, stay at Pelican Reef Villas Resort in Ambergris Cay and The Lodge at Jaguar Reef in Hopkins Village.
  • HOSTELWORLD : If you’re traveling on a budget, this is the best website to score cheap hostel deals.
  • VACATION RENTAL : I use this site to find the perfect vacation rental for an unforgettable getaway.
  • TRAVEL INSURANCE : Never go on a trip without travel insurance! SafetyWing is great for most trips, but if you are a remote worker and/or traveling regularly SafetyWing also has an awesome monthly subscription for digital nomad insurance.
  • GUIDED TOURS & EXCURSIONS : Many of the tours I recommend are hosted with Viator, which also works with local tour operators.
  • CHEAP FLIGHTS : There are a few airports you could fly into, Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City is the most likely choice. You can check which is closest to where you want to go in advance and get great deals using my favorite flight fare aggregator .
  • TRAVEL GEAR : A collection of all of my must-have travel gear is listed here . But most important to remember is bug spray , and reef-safe, natural suncream , nobody wants bites and burns!
  • CAR RENTAL : If you are planning on visiting a few spots then renting a car is a better option than public transport. Make sure you book your rental car in advance here for the best deals.

Amazingly clear water on the shore of a beach in Belize

What to pack for your trip to Belize of course varies on the seasons. Check the weather before you travel and as a general rule pack layers. Year round there are a few essentials I would recommend:

  • Comfortable footwear: This is the Caribbean, expect beach life! It isn’t unheard of to be in flip flops or even barefoot but it is better to be comfortable and safe in a decent pair of comfortable sandals like these. If you are going into the rainforest you definitely need hiking boots .
  • Water bottle: Remember to keep hydrated, it gets really hot despite the humidity! Bring a reusable water bottle to save on plastic bottles and take it with you always.
  • Bring lots of reef safe sunscreen , hats , and bathing suits to shield yourself from the strong Caribbean sun. It’s also a good idea to pack a swim shirt if you are particularly sun sensitive while swimming and snorkeling.
  • Bug spray: If you are prone to being eaten by bugs pack a deet free bug spray and keep it with you to reapply during the day.
  • Lightweight scarf: This always comes in useful, it is great to keep in your bag for when the sun gets a little strong, even when it gets cooler! This scarf is always handy to pack, also works great for keeping bugs away when in the rainforest.
  • Local eSim : Don’t expect great wifi. Always prepare in advance with a local eSIM for your phone to stay connected.
  • Pack some good conditioner because you’ll need it to remove the knots from your hair after snorkeling all day. These conditioner bars are great for traveling light and saving on plastic.

Belize is a bit more expensive than some of its neighboring countries, but it’s still relatively affordable and budget travelers shouldn’t be shy! There are plenty of things to do in Belize that won’t break the bank, like exploring Maya ruins or chilling on a sandy beach.

Once you get outside of crime-riddled Belize City, Belize is generally a safe country for tourists, especially in places like San Pedro, Hopkins, Placencia, San Ignacio, and Caye Caulker. But like any destination, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions!

The best time to visit Belize is between November and April, when the weather is dry and sunny. However, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time of year particularly in San Pedro, so you’ll need to book your accommodation and tours in advance. During other times of year, it rains a lot and the sand flies come out in droves!

14 days, or 2 weeks, is the right amount of time to spend in Belize, if you want to explore everything that the country has to offer – from the lush mainland to the white-sand cayes scattered just off the coast. Hiking in the jungles, exploring Maya ruins in San Ignacio, immersing yourself in traditional village culture, snorkeling on the reef, taking a helicopter ride over the Blue Hole, and cocktail-sipping on pristine beaches are just a few of the endless things to do in Belize… So you’ll need plenty of time!

There’s no right answer to this question. Belize is home to a variety of different areas, each with its own unique charm! Personally, I would avoid Belize City and go straight to other areas. If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing retreat, San Pedro is your place. If you want to immerse yourself in nature and explore Maya ruins, then San Ignacio , and the entire Cayo District , are perfect – especially if you stay at an ecolodge. If you’re a backpacker who wants to chill and “go slow” by day and dance to reggae tunes by night, go to Caye Caulker . The rustic Hopkins Village is Belize’s friendliest seaside village, offering traditional Garifuna culture and amazing food. If you’re after succulent lobster and other seafood, beautiful beaches, and open-air bars, infused with local culture, spend time in the Placencia Peninsula . And if you’re looking for even more adventure, head to the Toledo District in Southern Belize – it’s the least developed area in the country, with distinctive small villages, pristine rainforests, vast cave systems, coastal lowland plains, and offshore cays. These are all of the must-see places in Belize.

Belize is most well-known for its natural wonders, including the world-renowned Great Blue Hole for scuba diving, diverse wildlife, vast jungles, stunning beaches, small islands, and stunning coral reefs. However, the country also offers a rich culture and history, with ancient Maya ruins scattered throughout. There’s something for everyone in Belize!

Of course! Belize is great for tourists. Despite only receiving about 500,000 visitors per year (not many!), Belize is an amazing destination to travel to. In fact, the lack of visitors makes the experience even more special. From adventuring through lush jungles to snorkeling in the turquoise Caribbean waters, you couldn’t ask for a better vacation in Central America. This article includes 10 reasons why you should travel to Belize ASAP !

There are so many bucket-list-worthy attractions in Belize! This article lists them all. But to sum it up, here are some of the best things to do when you travel to Belize: snorkel in the Belize Barrier Reef; dive in the Blue Hole; hike through lush jungles in the national parks, nature parks, and reserves; explore the many ancient Maya ruins sites; eat traditional Belizean food; stay on a private island; go cave tubing; swim with nurse sharks, stingrays, and turtles at Shark Ray Alley; go spelunking at the ATM Cave; visit the Belize Zoo.

Have you traveled to Belize before? What are your favorite things to do in Belize? If you haven’t, what are you most looking forward to?
