mendenhall glacier boat tour

To get to the Mendenhall Glacier from the cruise port, you can take the Juneau-Mendenhall shuttle located near the Mt. Roberts Tramway ticket office. The shuttle runs between downtown Juneau and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in the summer months each year.

The shuttle runs in accordance with the Alaska cruise ship arrival and departure times, so if you’ll be arriving via plane into Anchorage or Juneau be sure to check the Juneau Port Schedule so you know when to expect the shuttle to be running. Or, you can book a taxi to make your journey even faster!

What are the Best Mendenhall Glacier Tours?

Some of the best Mendenhall Glacier tours include the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves Adventure Tour , the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle and Trek , and the Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure !

These three tours are some of the top-rated tours in Juneau with the #1 tour being the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves Adventure Tour for its outstanding reviews and canoe, trek, and ice cave inclusions!

When is the Best Time to Visit the Mendenhall Glacier?

mendenhall glacier boat tour

While winter may be one of the best times to see the northern lights in Alaska , the best time to visit the Mendenhall Glacier is during the summer months and no later than October when it is more accessible and safer for trekking. The glacier retreats significantly during the winter, so some of the hiking trails become inaccessible.

It is also much colder in winter, making it less enjoyable for tourists. Therefore, if you wish to explore and hike on top of the glacier, it is recommended that you plan a visit during summertime when weather conditions are milder.

Additionally, certain tours may be limited or unavailable during the winter season due to unsafe conditions or lack of accessibility.

Can you Walk on Top of Mendenhall Glacier?

mendenhall glacier boat tour

Luckily for travelers, you can walk on top of Mendenhall Glacier! However, it is important to take the necessary safety precautions and always consult with a guide or experienced hiker before attempting this trek.

You will also need proper gear such as ice axes, crampons, and warm winter clothing. It is not recommended for inexperienced hikers due to the extreme terrain and potential dangers associated with glaciers.

For your safety, it is best to join an organized tour group that will provide experienced guides who are knowledgeable about glacier trekking. These tours offer access to the glacier via both land-based hikes and boat excursions from Juneau Harbor.

Can you Go to Mendenhall Glacier on Your Own?

While it is possible to go to Mendenhall Glacier on your own, it is actually recommended to join a guided tour since you’ll be rewarded with learning about the history of the glacier and how it has changed over the years, how big it is, and so on.

If you decide to go on your own, you’ll need to rent a car in Juneau and drive to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, find parking, and walk up to the viewpoint.

You also have the option of taking a taxi or the local bus which will get you about 1.5 miles from the viewpoint (you’ll have to walk the rest of the way).

What is the Best Way to See Mendenhall Glacier?

Mendenhall Glacier tours typically take place in the summer months

The best way to see Mendenhall Glacier is by joining a guided tour! Why? Because it is the most stress-free way of accessing one of Juneau’s most treasured sights. Not only will you not have to worry about transportation to and from downtown Juneau or the Alaska cruise port, but you’ll also get the chance to learn about the glacier from a local expert!

The Mendenhall Glacier is easily one of the best things to do in Juneau , so you don’t want to do it haphazardly. So, book your spot in advance and relax knowing you have all of the logistics taken care of!

Is it Worth it to See the Mendenhall Glacier?

The Mendenhall Glacier is absolutely worth seeing!

This natural sight is among the best in Alaska offering incredible photo opportunities and the experience of a lifetime to the lucky travelers who opt to visit it. In our opinion, it actually rivals the Aialik Glacier you can see on the world-famous Kenai Fjords Tours out of Seward !

How Long is the Mendenhall Glacier Tour?

mendenhall glacier boat tour

The length of a Mendenhall Glacier Tour depends on the specific tour type you choose. Some tours, such as helicopter tours, only last for an hour or two, but other more comprehensive excursions can last up to eight hours or even multiple days.

So, it is important to take a look at the length of each specific tour and make sure that it is the right fit for you and your group before making any bookings. Generally speaking though, most Mendenhall Glacier Tours range from 2-8 hours in duration .

There’s plenty to do outside, but for a closer look at the history and geology of the glacier, your ticket includes entrance to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center . You can study the elevated view of the glacier on display as well as interactive geological exhibits explaining glacial formation.

The glacier is named after  Thomas Corwin Mendenhall , a noted scientist, who served on the Alaska Boundary Commission that was responsible for surveying the international boundary between Canada and Alaska. In 1892, this glacier was renamed to honor Mendenhall. One of the founding board members of Ohio State University, Mendenhall never actually visited Alaska, however it was his techniques that ended a long-standing dispute over the actual boundaries of the country.

Canada is not far away. A short helicopter flight over the mountains will take you into British Columbia, just 40 or so miles away. The ice field is the reason that Juneau has no roads running in or out.

Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights en route to Mendenhall Valley -- home of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier .

Your guide will point out many attractions you'll want to see during your approximately two-hour stay at the glacier area. Scenic Photo Point and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center are well worth a visit. Watch a short film about the glacier and the 37 other glaciers that make up the Juneau Ice Field.

The area boasts several self-guided scenic trails that allow you to learn about the glacier's role in carving the landscape. Each of these trails offers a different view of the Mendenhall through trees or along the shores of Mendenhall Lake. The Nugget Falls trail takes you to the base of a long glacier-fed waterfall and offers the closest views of Mendenhall Glacier. Meander through the Tongass National Forest as you explore the Moraine Ecology Trail and the Steep Creek Trail -- the latter offers multiple views of wild sockeye salmon during the mid- to late-summer months.

This tour operates under a Special Use Permit issued by the US Forest Service. Due to occasional bear activity, food consumption is prohibited in the Mendenhall Glacier area.

Excursion Overview

The ultimate juneau adventure.

This exclusive Juneau tour will take you on a canoe paddle over an iceberg-filled lake on your way to explore the Mendenhall Glacier. Experience its immensity and effects on the landscape as you trek alongside the edge of the glacier ice. Every portion of this tour boasts stunning views and unforgettable environments. With extremely limited capacity, this adventure is Juneau's most sought-after adventure tour. This adventure starts with a scenic drive from the cruise ship terminal in downtown Juneau to the Mendenhall Glacier. With your professional guides, you will paddle with a small group in a canoe across Mendenhall Lake which is surrounded by towering waterfalls, wildlife, and massive mountain peaks. Along the way, your guides will entertain you and share their knowledge about the glacier's history and the unique Alaskan environment. Once arriving on the shore next to the glacier, you will be led on a hike through the rocky moraine to view the impressive ice features. Marvel at the deep blue-hued ice exposed by crevasses, moulins, and other glacial formations. While taking in this remote Alaskan wilderness, your guides will provide you with an in-depth interpretive experience about your surroundings. Continue to enjoy the dramatic scenery as you paddle back across the lake where you will be greeted with hot beverages before your return transportation. On this small group adventure, you will be one of the few to visit this unique location for an experience of a lifetime! The Mendenhall Glacier is, in part, famous for the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves, but those are rarely seen on tours. Mother nature determines when an Ice Cave is formed and there is no way to predict when this will happen. Cave formation is not dependent on time of year or weather. This tour operates under a permit with the Tongass National Forest and is an equal opportunity provider.

We had such an incredible time getting up close and personal with the glacier. The guides were phenomenal and made the trip fun and enjoyable. Definitely a must if you re physically able.

Such a fun adventure!

Cool tour. Got close and great pictures of the glacier. Guides Sophie and Devyn were great. Gear provided was in great condition and kept us totally dry despite rain and paddle splashes. Definitely requires some paddling effort, worth it when you are on a cruise with too much food:)

EXPLORE THE MENDENHALL LAKE ON A CANOE ADVENTURE!

Our professional guide leads you into exploring the serenity of the Tongass National Forest towards the Mendenhall Glacier. Voyage past steep cliffs, waterfalls, and icebergs while keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife en route to getting face-to-face with the glacier.

Experience Mendenhall Glacier by Canoe

Your adventure begins in front of your cruise ship, where you meet your professional guide. Step away from the crowds with narrated transportation to a remote part of the Tongass National Forest to get your first views of the breathtaking, ever-changing Mendenhall Glacier. One of the most accessible glaciers in North America, the Mendenhall Glacier is located just 12 miles from downtown Juneau. The 13-mile-long river of ice, which ends on the far side of Mendenhall Lake, is one of Alaska’s gems. A half-mile wide with ice up to 1,800 ft. deep, it’s no surprise that Mendenhall is the most visited glacier in all of Alaska.

Amazing Views

Once suited up in our top-quality gear along with a quick paddle lesson, hop in the canoe and launch across Mendenhall Lake. With the instruction of your guide, you will glide across the lake en route to the toe of the Mendenhall Glacier. Keep an eye on the cliffs decorated with nests of Arctic terns, a giant waterfall, and wildlife while voyaging along beautiful blue icebergs. You will come as close as possible to the face of the Mendenhall Glacier and be rewarded with front-row views of the “ice falls,” where miles of glacier ice flow steeply over the mountainside, and continue down to melt into the lake in front of you. Your guide will steer the canoe to the best viewpoints of the glacier’s towering blue crevasses and ice seracs.

Upon returning from your adventure on the lake, you’re welcomed by a hot beverage as you de-gear from your equipment. After a short drive back to the cruise ship docks, your adventure with us ends, but hopefully with memories that will last a lifetime.

MENDENHALL GLACIER CANOE TOUR RECENT REVIEWS

It was a great time with Matt and Mo. They were very energetic and helpful the whole time. They also kept everybody very entertained.

Had an amazing day out with our tour guide spencer. All the info given from the moment we got picked up was greatly appreciated. We felt completely safe(im usually terrified of water...) and could enjoy every minute of being out on the lake. Getting up close to the waterfall was for sure my favourite part! Thank you for a wonderful day.

Guides were excellent, Large family size canoe was a nice way to keep everyone involved and together.

Definitely one of the best tours that you can do in Juneau. Forget whatever the cruise ships offer, this is a better value. Joey and Brian were awesome.
