Marcus Goguen’s Historic Win at 2024 Freeride World Tour in Verbier: The Double Drop That Redefined Freeride Skiing

marcus goguen freeride world tour

This is,  respectfully , insane.

Marcus Goguen won at the FWT Event in Verbier on Friday, (the 2024  YETI Xtreme, if you care.)This mindblowing run is what sealed the deal. Marcus's line starts calm enough, as he drops into a very exposed face and picks his way through rocks. He pops a tasty 360 off a big cliff drop, then heads for previously uncharted territory. Carving a brand new line in the day's competition, it's the double drop he stomps that will be remembered for generations. Stick around for the double drop, I promise you it is well worth it.

Happily, we can enjoy Marcus's POV of this one for repeated viewing. Thanks to this 19-year-old menace, we just witnessed a  fateful day in freeride history.

We love it when our community helps us source the sickest, most hilarious or irreverent stories and videos out there. Whether it’s your own POV or something you and your BFF put together, TGR wants to see it. Follow us on  Instagram  and share your vids via DM or email  [email protected] .

Marcus Goguen rides the Horse!

marcus goguen freeride world tour

At the Freeride World Tour’s stop at Kicking Horse in Golden on February 17th, Whistler’s Marcus Goguen threw down a crazy run—including an epic backflip to secure a second-place finish. Watch Marcus’s run here:

Other Canadian results included Justine Dufour-Lapointe skiing to a 4th place and Katie Anderson riding to a 5th place finish.

The athletes delivered memorable performances in front of a deafening local crowd at Kicking Horse. The competition went down on the Ozone Face, which provided the perfect venue for the 2023 world title race to continue.

Goguen’s second-place puts him at eighth overall in the standings—good enough for a spot in the FWT finals. Justine Dufour-Lapointe sits in third overall and Katie Anderson continues to lead in snowboard. We’ll get to follow three Canadians in the FWT finals in Fieberbrunn, Austria on March 11.

‘A dream come true’

Marcus Goguen hits a massive drop during the Freeride World Tour finale in Verbier, Switzerland on March 22, 2024.

A changing of the guard is afoot on the Freeride World Tour (FWT) and Marcus Goguen finds himself squarely in the mix. The Whistlerite reached deep into his bag of tricks in Verbier, Switzerland for his second career FWT triumph at March’s season finale.

“That’s one of the biggest achievements you can get in freeriding,” Goguen said. “The competition has been running for so long, before we had the Freeride World Tour, and that’s where the legends came from. Being able to win in Verbier is a dream come true, and I definitely didn’t think I was going to achieve that goal this year but I’m super happy.”

Adverse weather held the skiers atop the Bec des Rosses face for over an hour, nervously waiting for conditions to improve. It wasn’t easy, but Goguen—who has been competing since he was eight years old—knows how to play the mental game. A 10-minute power nap helped him relax, as did his familiar mantras and routines. Then it was his turn to drop in.

What followed was a run freeride enthusiasts won’t soon forget. Goguen blazed a new trail down the storied venue, which he calls “one of gnarliest faces” he’s ever tackled. His first 360 came together with relative ease, and he forged on to something more daring: one of the most monumental double airs in FWT history.

“My game plan was to do just what I did in my run,” explained the Whistler Freeride Club (WFC) product. “It was definitely the biggest double I’ve ever done. I might’ve even yelled a little bit in the air because I was scared I was going to be tumbling off the second one, but I managed to just bounce off that pad, stay balanced in the air … and somehow landed it.”

Goguen notched 96.00 points and a gold medal for his daredevilry, which was also enough to secure him second overall in the 2024 FWT overall ranking. Only Max Hitzig of Germany placed above him in that regard.

“Second overall is huge and just shows all the accomplishments and progression that I’ve made throughout the season,” Goguen remarked. “I wouldn’t say it’s the most important—the Bec des Rosses win and the Georgia win are what meant the most to me. I’ve just got to keep pushing and working for those single results, and then the overall comes.”

Onward and upward

Not one to wilt under pressure, Goguen ascended to his first career FWT victory in the shadow of Georgia’s Khakhiani face. He attacked the venue with three high-amplitude tricks in rapid succession: first a massive 360, then an equally huge backflip, and last but not least a corked 720. His numbers added up on the judges’ scorecards too: 98.00 points for gold.

The 19-year-old needed eighth place or higher to punch his ticket to Verbier, and he cleared the bar with lots of room to spare.

“I mean, I couldn’t be more happy with that run,” said Goguen. “Everything went right as I planned it, and every time I landed a jump I was surprised. As I continued to land, I was like: ‘alright, let’s keep it going.’ I made it all the way to the bottom and was in disbelief, that’s for sure.”

Young Swiss talent Martin Bender earned silver in Georgia, while Hitzig clinched bronze to go with two wins and the silver from Verbier. All three podium finishers scored in the 90s, as did four others.

The campaign’s penultimate stop in Fieberbrunn, Austria presented a tougher hurdle. Weather and snow conditions were far from ideal, leaving the two-run event in doubt until roughly 30 minutes before go time. Goguen failed to complete his second trip down the mountain, but the first proved enough to net him bronze (94.67).

He didn’t rest on his laurels about it.

“Definitely one of the harder competitions mentally this season,” Goguen admitted. “I wouldn’t say that Fieberbrunn was my best skiing and I would have loved to have shown a bit more, but I was happy to get that result and it gave me a bit more confidence going into the Bec des Rosses.”

‘I’d love to keep the dream going’

Goguen’s meteoric rise gained notoriety at the 2023 Freeride Junior World Championships , which he won using the same gusto and skill that buoyed him to glory in Verbier. Outside of contests, he’s starred in at least two major films: Daymaker by Warren Miller Entertainment and Teton Gravity’s Legend Has It.

Before long, Goguen will be back on camera working with Matchstick Productions.

“I love filming: having the opportunity to shoot these movies and progress my skiing in different ways,” he said. “I think it's a good way to show a different side of our skiing, and we have a chance to send it a bit more. There's not not necessarily as much pressure when we're out filming, as opposed to competitions.”

The WFC alum is also a known two-sport athlete. He’s historically been a full-time mountain biker (finishing a respectable fourth at last year’s Canadian Open Enduro ) and credits the discipline with shoring up his physical and mental resilience. That said, it may be time for a change of pace.

Goguen still plans to enter his share of local bike races this summer, but may forgo overseas travel to give himself some semblance of an actual offseason.

In any case, Goguen’s fortunate to have a solid network of peers and supporters. WFC founder Derek Foose, who commentates on FWT events, is usually around to help him pick his line. Fellow Sea to Sky athletes Wei Tien Ho and Jackson Bathgate have pushed him in the best of ways, though they did not qualify for finals this time around.

“I'm super proud of them,” said Goguen. “It was the dream to be on the tour with my buddy Wei Tien for so long, and for that to happen is quite the adventure. We had a blast shredding together and having Jackson on the tour too has been pretty sweet. I hope they can crush it in the [FWT Challenger Series] and get back on here next season, because I'd love to keep the dream going.”

Freeride World Tour ’24 Kicking Horse Stop Two Recap

marcus goguen freeride world tour

Featured Image: Dom Daher | Skier: Astrid Cheylus

Oooh, Canada! The land of Tim Hortons, Geddy Lee and dreamy deep snow. What better place on Earth is there? Specifically, is there anywhere better than Kicking Horse, British Columbia, where we witnessed stop two of the 2024 Freeride World Tour (FWT)? The competition had a lot of pressure riding on it, as we already have seen two cancellations and one relocation for comps this season. But Kicking Horse provided good snow and a lineup of riders that had more juice than a toddler after a Red Bull tasting.

The usual competition face at Kicking Horse, the Ozone Venue, was out of commission today. The official description of the Ozone sounded less than optimal, as the press release regarding the venue read, “The top section was fine, but the middle section had very poor snow conditions with inconsistent quality, ranging from a thick crust to decent, and then to sugary snow over 50 cm deep, directly on top of rocks. The bottom was littered with ice cookies the size of watermelons.” Yucko. FWT organizers made the call to move the scene to a zone known as T1 South, a beautiful section that, while littered with trees, has plenty of cliffs, gaps and straight lines. We were even treated to comments in the booth from FWT veteran and Canada’s own Tom Peiffer , making this stop a true must-watch. We saw backflips, tomahawks, huge drops, plenty of 3s to go around (shoutout to Marcus Goguen for racking ’em up) and a plethora of other action, so let’s dive in.

In the Women’s Ski Field, it was a day for the young guns. The snowpack was variable throughout the face, which caught a couple of riders off guard. Punchy landings and thick turns were abundant, but it didn’t deter all! Three out of the top five finishers were in their first or second year on the tour, showing how much talent is pouring into the field lately. In third place was the veteran Hedvig Wessel. She started off with a gigantic cliff at the very start of her run, barely clearing the rocks in the landing. It was an incredibly impressive start, but she blazed through the rest of the run, unfortunately appearing to miss a few features she was looking to hit. She was still one of only three riders in the field who were awarded a score above 80. Second place belonged to the Red Bull rookie Manon Loschi. The flying Frenchie put together a fantastic run, complete with a technical air, a huge 3 and a backflip off the wind lip near the base. If it wasn’t for the backslap off the 3, she may well have ended up in first. However, the stop spot belonged to Manon’s good friend and riding partner, Astrid Cheylus. Also a rookie on the Tour, Cheylus won the judges’ hearts by scoring huge in the Line selection category as well as Air & Style. She took on several large drops and topped off the technical run with a backflip at the end. Vive la France!

“I don’t know if this is real or a dream; I am so stoked. The conditions were better than I thought, and it wasn’t the line I had planned, but the little lip at the end was calling me. It is my first time in Kicking Horse and I like it. I look forward to Georgia and might try something bigger and will try to enjoy it even more.”

– Astrid Cheylus, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro winner

In the Men’s Ski Field, we saw a familiar face on top of the throne. It was a bit of a shake-up underneath that, however, as it was a scattered mix of veterans and rookies throughout. The tricky conditions rang true as we saw five riders not be able to finish their runs, including defending champion Maxime Chabloz and FWT wildcard rider AND Whistler legend Stan Rey, who logged the tomahawk of the year . Third place belonged to the Canadian Marcus Goguen, who threw down a wildly entertaining run. The 19-year-old put down three left 3s (try saying that five times fast) in the first 15 seconds of his line. He then diverged into un-skied territory and found a massive cliff ride for the diving. It was a beautiful showing of freeride at its best. Just sneaking into second place by a point and a half was Oscar Mandin. He had a line filled with speed and air time, complete with a massive backflip in the middle of the face and a directional pin out the bottom. With a few precise movements, he earned his spot on the podium. This was the third medal for France on the day in the ski fields! The gold belonged to none other than Max Hitzig. The German powerhouse, defending champion from the previous Verbier stop, clinched a 94.00! It was a blink-and-you-‘ll-miss-it line, reminding everyone of the entertaining style that Hitzig always brings. He had a few beautiful airs, but it was the giant right 3 to bolts that sent the crowd roaring.

“I am super excited and stoked with the win. Conditions were better than expected, but I tried to ski a safe line, so I was happy to finish. Traveling with my buddy Vale [Valentin Rainer] is so much fun, and competing here has been amazing. Looking forward to Georgia. They have had a lot of snow, and conditions look great, so I will try to stay in the top spot.”

18-Year-Old Lands INSANE Back-To-Back-To-Back Airs For Second Place At FWT Kicking Horse

' data-src=

You know what’s a great way to convince yourself to stay on a treadmill for 55 minutes? Watch the Freeride World Tour stop at Kicking Horse live while running/walking/whatever. I know this, of course, because that’s exactly what I was doing while the competition was going on this year.

I’m sure if anyone was watching me run, they probably would have gotten a good laugh out of the faces I was making in reaction to the  INSANE  things then went down during the men’s skiing (there was insane stuff in every category, that’s just the one I watched on the treadmill…)

20-year-old Max Hitzig took first place after sending a MASSIVE   backflip , and he definitely deserved the win, but the run that took my breath away the most (and caused me to have the best reaction for unknowing onlookers at the gym) has to be 18-year-old Marcus Goguen ‘s second place run.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by FIS Freeride World Tour (@freerideworldtour)

Back to back to back airs (with one little bounce thrown in the middle, so maybe back to back to back to back). Clean 360, little bounce, big air, quick readjustment,  HUGE backflip. All with a maximum of 3 seconds touching snow in between. So quick, so rowdy, so incredible.

With Hitzig only 20-years-old and Goguen only 18, I think the future of freeride competitions is looking  pretty  solid…

Freeride World Tour Event #3 – Athletes Turn Up the Heat in Epic Conditions in Georgia

marcus goguen freeride world tour

Mountainwatch | Press Release

MESTIA, Georgia – February 29, 2024: The FWT by Peak Performance season went into overdrive today, with the first FWT Pro event in Georgia completed in picture-perfect conditions. It was the last stop before the FWT Finals, meaning titles – and careers – were on the line.

Khakhiani – or კახიანი in Georgian – was the chosen venue, which was caked in dry, fluffy snow from the top to the finish line, offering up pristine conditions for the world’s best freeriders. With bountiful creative options – mixed with a complex web of features – athletes were enticed to go big… which they did.

marcus goguen freeride world tour

Here’s what went down today in the Georgian Caucasus Mountains:

Snowboard Men

Victor de Le Rue (FRA) was the first rider out of the gates and threw down the gauntlet for the rest of the field, sending a huge double drop followed by four 360s, buttering the bottom section to take his third win in a row. FWT veteran Jonathan Penfield (USA) showed us why he has been one of the best riders for years with a solid run to finish second, ahead of Liam Rivera (SUI) in third.

“I am super happy. The traveling was stressful, but I was stoked to ride my line in good snow. I am in a good position in the rankings; I want to continue having fun and try even more in the remaining competitions.”  – Victor de Le Rue, 2024 Georgia Pro winner

Snowboard Women

Núria Castán Barón (ESP) wowed the judges with a fast and fluid line to take her second win of the season. Her run included two big hits out of the starting gates before linking multiple clean features with an aggressive freeride approach. Erin Sauve (CAN) showed total commitment on the entire face to finish second, while rookie Anna Martinez (FRA) locked in her third FWT podium from as many starts.

“I was nervous, but I think that actually helped me. I am proud of my line; I made some changes that worked out and am happy with my second win. It’s a dream to be leading the category, especially after finishing last at Kicking Horse. I have been competing on the tour for four years now, and my goal is to be the FWT World Champion.” –  Núria Castán Barón, 2024 Georgia Pro winner

Sybille Blanjean (SUI) needed something special today to make the Cut, and she delivered a colossal performance. Sybille took no time to get into her line, sending a massive air into the face before going into cruise control, linking a bunch of smooth drops ahead of another huge send at the bottom. Hedvig Wessel (NOR) went full throttle on the Khakhiani face, showing impeccable style in the air to take second place, just in front of Lily Bradley (USA) in third.

“I am super happy to put down that run, especially with how nervous I was at the top. There were a lot of questions in my mind, so I am happy that it paid off. Thank you, Georgia! It means so much to make the Cut and have my ticket to compete at home in Verbier.” –  Sybille Blanjean, 2024 Georgia Pro winner

The new generation shone today, signaling a changing of the old guard in the Ski Men’s category. Marcus Goguen (CAN) put down an absolute mind-blowing run and earned a near-perfect score of 98 from the judges. He exploded into his line with a smooth 360 into the guts of the face and then didn’t deviate from the fall line, combining a huge backflip with a corked-720 before endlessly sailing over a transfer to bring home the win. Young Swiss rider Martin Bender (SUI) finished in second, leapfrogging up the rankings and securing an FWT Final berth with a fluid line that included a 720, backflip and a 360. Max Hitzig (GER) backed up his pair of wins this season with a solid third-place finish, combining multiple gravity-defying backflips with an equally deep 360.

“It’s a dream come through – I’ve been working towards this for basically my entire life. I’m still in shock and can’t believe I landed that run. I made it up after the 720 as I had way more speed than expected, so I’m glad it worked out. Stoked to have scored the equal highest score with my buddy Logan Pehota. My objective is to keep it going; keep skiing lines I want to and keep having fun – that’s what it is all about.” –    Marcus Goguen, 2024 Georgia Pro winner

marcus goguen freeride world tour

This was the final event before the Cut, pushing riders to go even bigger. In the Snowboard Women’s category, Anna Martinez (FRA) qualified in her rookie year and Núria Castán Barón (ESP) continued her amazing season, while FWT 2022 World Champion Tiphanie Perrotin (FRA) didn’t make it through the Cut.

Victor de Le Rue (FRA) made it an incredible three wins from three in the Snowboard Men’s category, while Liam Rivera (SUI) made a big move today with his podium finish, making the Cut and progressing to the FWT Finals. Among the big excluded from the Finals there is FWT 2023 World Champion Ludovic Guillot-Diat (FRA) and Cody Bramwell (GBP).

marcus goguen freeride world tour

The young guns are really pushing the sport in the ski categories, putting down incredible runs. Manon Loschi (FRA) – in her rookie year – kept the lead in the Ski Women’s category, and Astrid Cheylus (FRA) also qualified. Sybille Blanjean put down an amazing run and qualified for the FWT Finals, where she returns to competing in front of her home crowd, where she has already tasted success. Molly Armanino (USA) had a solid choice of line, but unfortunately crashed and missed her spot in the Finals as well as Addison Rafford (USA)  and Megane Betend (FRA).

In Ski Men, Max Hitzig kept the lead and Marcus Goguen jumped from an 8 th to a solid 2 nd position. The highly anticipated rookie Martin Bender finally put down a solid run and qualified for the Finals with an amazing podium, as did Maxime Chabloz (SUI). Jackson Bathgate (CAN), Max Palm (SWE) and FWT legend Andrew Pollard (USA) all missed out on the Cut, and will head to the Challengers.

Check out the who made the cut and the full rankings here .

The much-anticipated Georgia Pro went off with a bang today, with riders delivering solid freeride performances and unleashing their deep bags of tricks. The FWT by Peak Performance season now heads into the FWT Finals, increasing the pressure on the riders who have made the Cut.

Marcus Goguen got ultra technical and creative today to take the Verbier title, skiing through extreme exposure and looking like a veteran on the face. He stomped his first 360 with little hesitation before opening up a brand-new line on the Bec des Rosses, sending arguably the biggest triple air in freeride history. Will this now be called the Marcus Goguen triple?
