Ratings and reviews

Location and contact.

Have eaten here twice whilst staying nearby. A huge variety of Asian food at a very reasonable price. Very much doubt you’ll find such a wide choice and variety of Asia food elsewhere, except at another Royal Buffet. Highly Recommended.

Omg, u cant imagine what u see , very good taste and big menu , u can eat all kind of food, i love suchi and ice cream

Been here several times now. Can't believe just how much choice there is fro typical chinese food but also large selection of sushi japenses food also. Don't go if youre looking for qaint quiet romantic meal out, this is a hanger size restaurant and very... very noisy with lots of coming and goings. If you have a big appetite and love chinese food then this place is great. Its about 15 euros for adults at lunch time and more for dinner. Cheaper for kids. Is very child friendly. Never needed to book as the place is huge and seating always found somewhere. Bathroom clean which isnt always the case in many places so thumbs up there. More

Sadly this restaurant is nowhere near as good as it used to be. Quality of beef dishes poor, chewy, rice and noodles cold, and waiting staff all young French people who seemed at a loss as to what to do. We ordered three drinks with... our meal, 2 beers and 1 Perrier. The server arrived with one beer and the wrong water, which he took back. Arrived again with the correct water but still without the missing beer. Asked again, can we have the other beer we ordered. Off he went only to start clearing other tables. In end I had to go to the bar and ask for my beer, whereupon instead of just giving me the beer, he proceeded to put it on a tray and carry it to our table! Don’t know what has happened to change this place for the worse but hope they can address the problems and get it back to the standard it was before. We have used this restaurant for many years and recommended to friends etc but will now be changing to an alternative Chinese restaurant. More

Our tour of desert was made special by our wonderful tour guide, Naveed Jan with Royal Tours. Naveed Jan was attentive to our needs, from offering cold drinks to giving insight to local history. He watched over us making sure we were comfortable. He became... a part of our family in this short time. Weare taking Naveed Jan with us, in our memories and pictures. More

A pre flight meal before our return to England had untold consequences, my wife insisted that her food was only Luke warm or cold and ate very little, myself on the other hand ate heartily, yes the food could have been much warmer. We had... nothing more to eat that day as we didn’t arrive home till late that night. The next day the floodgates opened, literally been to the toilet at least 6 times. The food hygiene here leaves something to be desired, my wife was absolutely right the food is not kept to adequate temperatures and am sure this is the reason for my stomach condition. AVOID THIS PLACE! More

Returned for the first time in years. Very disappointing. The decor is stark (modern? Doesn’t work!). The layout of the buffet is confusing. THERE ARE NO SNEEZE GUARDS OVER THE FOOD. Sad to say that, as this was the first time I had been out... from my home environment in some days, I contracted a very heavy cold/mild flu (I’m vaccinated against flu and Covid) and can only believe it was here that I caught it - due to the lack of hygiene safeguards. We will not be going back! More

Exceptional This was an unbelievable experience. We went into this restaurant. We were shown a table for two in a corner of this enormous restaurant. A big food hall. Nearly all tables were in use. There were about 200 guests. Most of them were young.... The noise was deafening. It turned out to a self-service restaurant. All sorts of food were on offer. However, a red and sweet sauce soaked more or less all the food on offer. It tasted the same was it fish, meat or vegetables. Needless to say, we decided not to go into this food hall next time we passed Tours. A strange experience. . More

Stopped at tours overnight on our first visit to France and came across this great place.excellent food and service great would recommend to anyone.would certainly come back if we visited again

We were dropping off a friend at the Airport in Tours and decided this was a great spot to stop. The restaurant is very large, lots of tables and staff. The buffet had a great selection of fresh food, cooked and uncooked for the wok.... A fantastic selection of food and plenty for everyone, all tastes covered. The containers were well stocked and topped up as and when needed. The menu had a number of selections, for the pricing with or without drinks included. Plenty of parking so no need to worry about spaces. A huge selection of ice cream and desserts to help finish your meal. More

5 restaurants with incredible views of Moscow

royal buffet tours menu

The restaurant Sixty is located on the 62nd floor of the Federation Tower, one of Moscow's tallest skyscrapers. At 225 meters above the ground, its height is no joke. You can almost touch the clouds during the day or count the stars and lights of the Moscow City skyscrapers at night.

When entering the restaurant, you immediately notice its huge panoramic windows and birch trees (which, unfortunately, are not real). And if you’re not ready to visit this restaurant for the sake of these windows alone then its talented French chef, Regis Trigel, should be more than enough to persuade you.

royal buffet tours menu

One guest named Alexander shared his impressions: "The point of the restaurant is the moment when the windows open, people get up from their seats to stand by the open windows and admire Moscow in the open air. In fact, from the usual procedure of airing the rooms, a whole show is made—that's great! It is said that this is the only place in all Moscow City where the upper parts of the windows are fully opened."

Keep in mind it is best to make a reservation in advance in order to get a table by the window.

International Business Center, Federation Tower, 60th floor,   Presnenskaya emb., 12

White Rabbit

White Rabbit took 23d place in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. That’s already impressive enough, but its view also stands out. White Rabbit is located beneath a glass dome on the 16th floor of Smolenskiy Passage. In the evening, a stunning view of the city is guaranteed, but make sure to reserve well in advance to get a table near the window.

royal buffet tours menu

Vladimir Mukhin, White Rabbit’s chef, makes Russian cuisine in line with the latest trends and using local products. Guests are usually delighted with the Chef's Table—evenings when Mukhin and other chefs from the restaurant present special menus. If you want to taste unusual combinations like borsch with carp or ice cream made from traditional black bread, this place is for you.

3 Smolenskaya square, 16th floor

Karlsson astonishes visitors with unbelievable views of the Kremlin and Moscow's historical center. The restaurant is especially pleasant in the summer when the veranda is open. The restaurant’s brand chef, Carlo Grecu from Italy, prepares Mediterranean cuisine. Try the risotto with king crab and avocado mousse.

Ovchinnikovskaya Embankment, 20/1, BC "Central City Tower"

Buono restaurant is located on the 29th and 30th floors of the renovated Ukraina Hotel, the new Radisson Royal, which is located in one of Moscow’s seven famous skyscrapers. Most of the seats are lined along panoramic windows on a covered terrace, providing a breathtaking view of the city. Another thing that attracts guests' attention is the wooden pizza oven. As you might have already guessed, Buono’s chef, Christian Lorenzini, specializes in classic Italian cuisine. Try the scallops with fresh spinach, green asparagus, morels and truffle sauce.

You might also want to visit one more restaurant in the same building—the rather more brutal Mercedes Bar, situated on the 31st floor. In Mercedes Bar, Christian Lorenzini prepares dishes based on the top hits of modern European cuisine.

2/1 Kutuzovsky Ave., Bld. 1, Hotel Radisson Royal

Seventh Heaven Restaurant

This restaurant is located around 330 meters above ground in the Ostankino TV Tower. It was opened in 1967 but closed for reconstruction following a fire in 2000. It finally reopened in 2016.

The restaurant complex covers three floors. In order to get there, you need to buy a ticket to the observation point. Then choose where to eat: in a bistro, cafe or restaurant. The tables stand on a platform that rotates in 40-minute intervals, showing you Moscow from a bird’s-eye view. The different dining options vary in terms of menu, price and interior decoration. Chef Andrey Gurko is guaranteed to complement the views with equally impressive gastronomic adventures.

Ul. Academician Korolev, 15, building 2.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

Moscow Restaurants: Best Cafe & Restaurants in Moscow on Any Budget

Home / Russia Travel Tips & Essential Advice / Moscow Restaurants: Best Cafe & Restaurants in Moscow on Any Budget

Moscow’s restaurant scene is booming with Russian dishes that are to die for. A city in the midst of a foodie revolution where almost anything goes, there is perhaps no dining scene in Europe as dynamic, exciting and adventurous as Moscow’s.

At long last, Moscow is being recognised as an international culinary destination. New eateries are popping up at an astounding rate, and first-time visitors can expect to feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to places to eat in Moscow.

This guide to eating out in Moscow covers some of the top restaurants in Moscow for any budget, from the top end of town to some of the city’s tastiest cheap eats. There are plenty of excellent options here whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner in Moscow. We’ve focused mainly on Moscow restaurants serving Russian food but thrown in some best-in-class representations of other cuisines for some added variety. In this list, you’ll find some of the most famous restaurants in Moscow, a few lesser-known gems and a few totally unique institutions which have become Moscow tourist attractions in their own right. Moscow’s food prices vary wildly. It’s easy to spend big in this town, but it’s also easy to find extremely affordable eats if you know where to look. One thing is for sure though – no matter what your tastes or budget, in Moscow, you’ll never go hungry for long.

Fine Dining Restaurants in Moscow

Café pushkin.

royal buffet tours menu

A Moscow institute is known for its impeccable fine dining Russian and French cuisine, the palatial Café Pushkin opened in 1999 and immediately attracted a loyal following among high society folk. Elaborately decorated to recreate the feel of a 19th-century aristocrat’s manor, Pushkin has become equally popular with tourists keen to soak up the stately atmosphere of pre-Revolution Russia. The menu features sophisticated interpretations of definitive Russian cuisine, with a nod to classical French techniques. The kitchen’s insistence on high-quality ingredients lifts well-known favourites to another level of complexity and refinement. The signature beef stroganoff consistently receives rave reviews, while the roasted rack of lamb is the ultimate in rich, meaty indulgence. Of course, a restaurant of this standing serves several varieties of caviar a selection of top-shelf vodkas fit for an emperor.

Despite its rather formal appearance, the Café Pushkin experience is utterly charming. The waiters dress like 19th-century servants and diners are treated like royalty, but not without a sense of fun and theatrics. Bookings well advance are recommended.

White Rabbit

royal buffet tours menu

Consistently ranking in Restaurant Magazine’s prestigious annual World 50 Best Restaurants list, White Rabbit is the first restaurant in Russia to receive such international acclaim. Its success (it secured 15 th place on the list in 2018) is a sure sign of Moscow’s ascendance as a global gastronomy destination.

White Rabbit’s whimsical and immersive interiors are designed to evoke a sense of fantasy and wonder, with rabbits everywhere and antique rococo furniture straight out of a Wonderland tea party. On the 16 th floor of the Smolenskiy Passazh shopping centre, White Rabbit’s glass dome captures mesmerising 360-degree views, showcasing the awe-inspiring scale of the Russian capital.

Chef Vladimir Mukhin has dreamt up an inventive European menu employing seasonal ingredients from across Russia. Standout dishes from this luxury Moscow restaurant include rabbit and cabbage rolls with potato crisps and truffle, roast suckling pig and Black Sea oysters.

One of the best and most luxurious restaurants in Moscow.  The Estate is designed in style of baroque, classicism and renaissance. The refine painting, jewel porcelain vases, moulding, genuine Gobelene tapestries, ancient clocks and fireplaces. Two workshops of wood engravers, painters, sculptors had been manufacturing the interior’s details for six years. All here including carved lumps of modern authors’ work is of museum importance.

The menu includes dishes from Japan, European, Chinese cuisines, and fusion cuisine, as well. This Siberian restaurant is dark and traditional. The tables are lit by small lamps with tassels, while chandeliers contribute more to mood than illumination. Mournful music plays softly, the sound absorbed by the heavy tablecloths and all the soft furnishings. The menu is a treat for the adventurous. You might start with pate of polar partridge, then go for the sweet grilled meat of Altay yak with tomato and mustard sauce; or the gamey richness of minced meat of Sayan bear with cream-cowberry sauce and buckwheat.

Grand Café Dr. Zhivago

Moscow Restaurants Grand Café Dr. Zhivago

This ornate brasserie across from the Kremlin is Russian kitsch, with oversized statues, bright red chairs, white walls and colorful ceilings. It feels anachronistic, yet it’s the creation of a modern restaurateur, Alexander Rappoport.

There’s a lightness of touch in the dishes on a long menu celebrating Russian favorites from dumplings and pickled cabbage through to goose stew with cowberry. It’s especially good for breakfast, which includes more than 20 egg dishes and about a dozen types of porridge.

Price Range: Average check RUB 2,000-2,500 (US $40) Hours: Monday to Sunday 12 pm – 12 am Address: 15/1 Mokhovaya Street Nearest Metro Station: Teatralnaya Contact Details: drzhivago.ru

Another project of Aleksandr Rappoport, a restaurant with a phenomenal variety of fish and seafood at the most reasonable prices. Ninety percent of the fish in the restaurant is caught in Russia (from 25 rivers and seas). The restaurant features a caviar and oyster bar. Slices of frozen nelma (Siberian white salmon) and sterlet, thaw in the mouth with a natural, revealing taste of fish. The restaurant also offers a large variety of crabs and shrimps: king crab, snow crab, frog crab, blue king crab, spiky crab, hairy crab, Argentinian shrimp from the warm waters of the Atlantic ocean; Dock shrimp from the cold waters of the northern seas and others.

A branch of this restaurant – “Erwin Reka”, is located directly on the board of the luxury yacht of the “Radisson Royal, Moscow” flotilla which daily cruises the Moscow River. The restaurant is open from noon to 1:00 am, and twice a day, at a scheduled time, travels along the Moscow river. The yacht-icebreaker leaves from the “Hotel Ukraine” pier regardless of the season and the weather: twice a day on weekdays (3.30pm and 8.00pm) and three times a day on weekends (12.00pm, 3.30pm, 8.00pm). Guests can enjoy not only the first-class fish and seafood dishes during a river cruise, but also relish picturesque views of the capital main sights: the famous high-rise hotel “Ukraine”, the House of Government of the Russian Federation, the Novodevichy Monastery, the Moscow State University complex, the Luzhniki Stadium, Gorky Park, the Central House of Artists, the giant Monument to Peter the Great, the legendary House on the embankment, the gold-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Moscow Kremlin and the gingerbread-like St. Basil’s Cathedral, the skyscraper on the Kotelnicheskaya embankment and the Zaryadye Park.

The exquisite interior of 1956, picturesque views, author’s kitchen – the team of the restaurant Ottepel is inviting you to appreciate design of the reconstructed historical pavilion and enjoy ingenious dishes.

Staff wear Mondrian-inspired aprons and the menu is innovative — the restaurant specializes in upgrading well-known, simple Soviet dishes into high-end cuisine. Traditional Russian cabbage soup “shchi” (420 rubles) counts calamari among its ingredients while the ubiquitous cold soup “okroshka” (360 rubles) features salty pastrami. Another trending item is the  “koryushka” served with potatoes (380 rubles). The smelt fish originates from the Baltic sea and is immensely popular in St. Petersburg. If you seek a filling meal, try chicken in Georgian “satsivi” sauce with fried polenta and cheese (610 rubles).

It’s an innovative throwback to the Soviet era, and perfectly at home in the ramblingly grandiose exhibition park of VDNH.

Price Range: Average check USD $30-$40 Hours: 12pm–10pm Address: Mira St, 119, building 311 Nearest Metro Station: VDNH, Botanichesky Sad Contact Details: ottepel-restoran.ru , +7 495 748-61-02

Homey dining room for traditional Russian delicacies, decorated with standard lamps, bookcases and old photos on the wall. Its traditional Russian living room decoration and some Russian old school music playing in the background really gives you this “lovely Russian babushka” vibe which is part of the fun.

Portions are quite big and the price is reasonable. The menu itself is really interesting for tourists. Try out these traditional soviet Russian dishes: homemade cakes, borscht, Bird’s milk dessert. This is the right place to enjoy the delicious authentic meal, attentive service, and excellent ambiance! A great bonus for cat lovers: A resident cat Benjamin will stroll around now and then.

The word  uhvat  refers to a long-handled wooden utensil used to slide food in and out of a pechka, a wood-fired oven found in many Russian houses until the late 19th century. Uhvat is one of the restaurants leading the resurgence in traditional Slavic cooking, with slow-cooked dishes such as pumpkin  kashas  (a type of porridge) with honey and linden dressing (£3.50), baked roe with pickled bramble (£14)  schchi  soups with fermented cabbage and  chichelindas , an old recipe for pate, here made with ox tail (£5). Don’t leave without tasting  toplyonoe moloko , a thick creamy dessert made by baking milk for several hours. The pechka oven features in many Russian fairytales – the Baba Yaga witch shoves children into ovens – and takes the centre stage at Uhvat. Daily rituals, such as using goose feathers to dust out the ashes, enhance the magical atmosphere.

Art Rukav ( Rukav means sleeve) is a big platform where the free spirit of art and creativity reigns. There are art workshops, a gallery and a restaurant under the same roof. Rukav was named after the surname of the Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov.

Immersion in the world of art begins from the very first entrance through the massive decorated door. In the cloakroom you get checks in the form of drops, bright red ladders harmonize with dark sofas… There is even a pipe-shaped slide! The place is really unique and is dramatically different from the usual places to eat. During lunches you will surely be attracted by the details in decorating: to the stylized ware, for example, or an unusual sculpture next to your chair.

Stolovaya No. 57

Moscow restaurants Stolovaya No. 57

You might not expect to find an economy-priced cafeteria inside the stately walls of GUM, an enormous shopping centre on the Red Square specialising in luxury brands. But it seems no Muscovite (wealthy fashionistas and penny-pinching students alike) can resist cheap, simple and delicious Russian comfort fare, dished out in a quaint, Soviet-style “stolovaya” (a self-service, canteen-style eatery).

Stolovaya No. 57 serves the Russian equivalent of a home-cooked meal in a standard Russian family. Salads are super-popular here, including the mayonnaise-heavy Oliver salad and shuba (“Herring in a Fur Coat”) a layered salad of pickled herring, eggs, beets, carrots and potatoes in a creamy dressing. Also on the menu are beef stroganoff, chicken kiev and chebureki (a deep-fried, meat-filled pastry turnover).

Price Range: Mains 150 – 400 RUB, US $3-$10 Hours: Sunday to Saturday 10am – 10pm Address: Krasnaya Sq., 3 | Inside GUM, level 3  Nearest Metro Station: Teatralnaya or Okhotny Ryad Contact Details: gum.ru/cafe/stolovaya-57 , +7 495 620-31-29

Grechka Lab

The 1914 building — home of Moscow merchant Ivan Mikhailovich Korovin, and thereafter a bakery — was converted into a bright and airy café, contemporary bakery and brunch spot in the nation’s cosmopolitan capital. Flowers placed around the windows are a nod to wheat fields (‘ grechka ’ translates to buckwheat), whilst considered seating and textured walls evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Enjoy healthy soups, mains and salads, and try tasty éclairs,  “syrniki”  and cheesecakes.

Price Range: Average check 450-600 RUB, US $6-$8 Hours: Sunday to Saturday 8am – 11pm Address: Pushechnaya St 7/5c2 Nearest Metro Station: Kuznetsky Most, Lubyanka, Teatralnaya Contact Details: grechkalab.ru, +7 495 921-02-01

This Canadian restaurant and juice bar is on a mission to prove that vegetarian dining can be filling, exciting and varied and does not necessarily need to involve stereotypical joss sticks, Indian tapestries and variations on the lentil. Interior-wise it’s as fresh as they come, all clean minimalist lines, favouring industrial materials and rough edges over cuddly pictures of ethnic tribes. On the food front, Fresh gets full marks for providing an experience that both vegetarians and meat-eaters can salivate over – huge wraps bursting with scrumptious goodies and noodles bowls brimming with both delicate and fiery Asian flavours are just some of the long list of hits.

DEPO Food Mall

Moscow restaurants Depo

Depo (which means ‘ depot ’ in Russian) food mall opened in Moscow in February 2019 on the premises of a former tram depot. Built between 1874 and 1910 in the industrial neo-Gothic style, the red-brick Miussky tram depot is considered an important architectural monument.

Depo houses a small farmer’s market, with fruit, vegetables, cheese and meat, as well as the largest food court in Moscow (and, allegedly, in the whole of Europe) with more than 70 stalls, where one can sample food from all over the world – from China to Thailand and from Mexico to Morocco. The food mall also regularly hosts live concerts, DJ sets, workshops and public lectures.

Apart from the main building, which contains the market and the food mall, there are several proper restaurants on the premises of the former depot, including Kraby Kutaby (Crabs and Qutabs) by one of Moscow’s leading restaurateurs, Alexander Rappaport.

More

8 interesting facts about the Hermitage

Moscow is the capital of Russia. In 1156, Prince Yury Dolgoruky erected timber walls around Moscow, and a moat. He is generally regarded as a founder of Moscow, and his monument is among the most honoured in the city.

In 1755, Moscow University was opened, and in 1703, the first printed newspaper (“Vedomosti”) appeared. Moscow architecture reached its peak of perfection in the second half of the 18th century due to advanced Russian architects V.I. Bazhenov (Pashkov’s house), and M.F. Kazakov (the Senate building).

The present-day appearance of Moscow’s centre was founded after Napoleon wars in Europe. Thus, Alexandrov Garden and Theatre Square appeared alongside the Bolshoi and Maly theatres, as well as the buildings of Manezh and the First Gradskaya Hospital. The 19th century is known as a “golden age” for science and the arts, and Moscow was a birthplace for many famous artists, writers, painters and cientists. A number of outstanding politicians were also from the city. The world is familiar, of course, with figures whose talents and ideas made the glory of Russia: Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Herzen, Pirogov, Sklifosofsky, Vasnetsov, Serov, Levitan and many others.

Today, Moscow is the largest economic, political and scientific centre of Russia.

Red Square is a city square in Moscow, Russia. It separates the Kremlin, the former royal citadel and now the official residence of the President of Russia, from a historic merchant quarter known as Kitai-gorod. Red Square is often considered to be the central square of Moscow since the city’s major streets, which connect to Russia’s key key highways, originate there.

The square was laid out in the 15th century. Until the middle of the 17th century, Red Square was known as “Pozhar” – the place destroyed by fire. The name “Red” (or “Krasnaya,” which means “beautiful” in old Russian) came in the mid-17thh century. The main architectural detail of the square was the Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat – the Kremlin walls were surrounded by a moat. It later took the folk name of the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed.

In front of the cathedral was a marketplace, also the scene of religious ceremonies, appearances by the tsar, and the announcement of court verdicts from the Lobnoye Mysto. The square is a lasting witness to Russia’s dramatic history. The Victory Parade to celebrate the defeat of Nazism was held there on June 24th, 1945.

Moscow Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin or simply the Kremlin is a fortified complex in the center of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west. It is the best known of the Kremlins (Russian citadels) and includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. In addition, within this complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace that was formerly the Tsar’s Moscow residence. The complex now serves as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation and as a museum with 2,746,405 visitors in 2019.

The name “Kremlin” means “fortress inside a city”, and is often also used metonymically to refer to the government of the Russian Federation in a similar sense to how the “White House” refers to the Executive Office of the President of the United States. It previously referred to the government of the Soviet Union (1922–1991) and its highest members (such as general secretaries, premiers, presidents, ministers, and commissars). The term “Kremlinology” refers to the study of Soviet and Russian politics.

Christ the Savior Cathedral

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Moscow, Russia, on the northern bank of the Moskva River, a few hundred meters southwest of the Kremlin. With an overall height of 103 meters (338 ft), it is the second tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world, after the People’s Salvation Cathedral in Bucharest, Romania.

The current church is the second to stand on this site. The original church, built during the 19th cen- tury, took more than 40 years to build and was the scene of the 1882 world premiere of the 1812 Over- ture composed by Tchaikovsky. It was destroyed in 1931 on the order of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The demolition was supposed to make way for a colossal Palace of the Soviets to house the country’s legislature, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Construction started in 1937 but was halted in 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union during World War II. Its steel frame was disassembled the follow- ing year, and the Palace was never built. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the current church was rebuilt on the site between 1995 and 2000.

The State Historical Museum

The museum of incredible beauty, dedicated to the ancient Rus’ and the imperial era, seems to be as old as the Kremlin. It was built until the end of the 19th century, and thanks to its neo-Russian style it does not look out of place among the other buildings in Red Square.

The State Historical Museum on the Red Square was founded by the order of Emperor Alexander 2 in 1872. Built by architect V. Sherwood and engineer A. Semenov, the museum opened to the public in 1883.

Today the State Historical Museum is the national treasure chest of Russia, storage of historical relics of the world. The history and culture of Russia from old times is represented by more than 4.5 million objects and more than 15 million of unique archive documents.

Ascension Church in Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoe, a former estate of Moscow grand dukes and Russian tsars, is located on the right-hand bank of the Moskva river. Today it is a museum-reserve, a monument of Russian architecture of 16th and 17th-century and is a favorite venue of popular festivities and theatrical shows featuring episodes of Russian history. The Church of the Ascension was built in 1532 in the imperial estate of Kolomenskoe, near Moscow, to celebrate the birth of the prince who was to become Tsar Ivan IV (‘the Terrible’). One of the earliest examples of a traditional wooden tent-roofed church made of stone and bricks, it had a great influence on the development of Russian ecclesiastical architecture.

The church is of great importance for planning the town, as it dominates the surrounding architectur- al structures and landscape, and provides visual unity to all the elements of the estate. The Church of the Ascension is unsurpassed in its marvelous beauty and elegance it’s forms. It was built despite the strict canons of ecclesiastical architecture of the 16th century. Its a one-pillar construction, which is different from the usual five-domed structure of four pillars, that looks like a memorial sculpture with architectural features that incorporated the best of Byzantine, Greek, Roman, Gothic, and ancient Russian traditions. The example of the architecture of the Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoe then became widespread all over the country shortly and later the tent-like style became the embod- iment of Russian national architectural tradition.

Spaso-Andronikov Convent

Originally founded in 1320, this monastery is famous for its icon painting monk, Andrei Rublev who lived and died here in the early 14th century. Rublev is a well-known master that worked on the icons of the Kremlin’s Cathedral of Annunciation and many other churches. Today there is the Cathedral of the Savior, and the museum named after Rublev is housed in the adjacent Chapel of St. Michael Archangel.

The walls of the 15th century Spaso-Andronikov Convent show traces from the hand of Andrey Ru- blev, buried at the site, and his friend Daniel Cherney. There are many burial places of great figures of Russian culture and art and monuments surviving from days of communist purges in the territory of the Convent. The children of families that were considered opponents of the system were kept in the convent during years of repression. The convent houses a unique collection of ancient icons and depicts the process of their creation, including the technology used in preparing boards and paints.

Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent is one of Moscow’s most beautiful sights which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Novodevichy Convent can be translated as New Maiden Convent. It was founded in1524 on the orders of Grand Prince Vasili III of Moscow to celebrate Russia’s recapture of Smolensk in 1514. The convent is dedicated to the Our Lady of Smolensk Icon. It was built as a fortified convent on the River Moskva. Later the convent served as a place of retirement or imprisonment for female members of royal family.

Irina Godunova became a nun under the name of Aleksandra at the convent in 1598 and died there in 1603. Sofia Alekseevna, the sister of Peter the Great and former regent of Russia, was imprisoned here from 1689 up to her death in 1704. Most of the buildings in the convent and its walls date from around this time. In 1727, Tsarina Yevdokia Lopukhina (the first wife of Peter the Great) was permitted by her grandson Emperor Peter II to return from the exile in Schlisselburg and to settle at Novodevichy Con- vent. She died there in 1731. French troops were leaving Moscow in 1812 and they tried to burn down the convent, but the fire was put out by the nuns in time according to legend. The convent was closed in 1922 and reorganized as a museum which became a branch of the State Historical Museum in 1934.

Moscow State University

Welcome to Moscow State University, the first Russian University founded in 1755 on the initiative of Mikhail Lomonosov, an outstanding scientist of the Enlightenment, whose unsettled encyclopedic mind and energy gave the inner impetus to the project. From the very beginning, elitism was alien to the very spirit of our community, which determined the University’s long-standing democratic tra- dition. Students irrespective of their background have been always admitted to University to further become our renowned alumni – famous scientists and scholars. And the students convene here, as they have always done, to study, to research, to push at the frontiers of knowledge.

Today, the emphasis is on advancing the applied science: new materials, genetics, biomedicine, phar- maceutics, cognitive sciences, ecology, and information technologies. We work hard to preserve our heritage and develop our traditions of a comprehensive approach to higher education and science. Moscow University has a rich academic history. Yet the major commitment remains the same as it has been in centuries: to provide outstanding teaching, scholarship, and research. But what makes our University so lively is this intellectual spirit combined with inexhaustible curiosity.

Bolshoi Theatre of Russia

On 28 March 1776, Catherine II granted the prosecutor, Prince Petr Urusov, the “privilege” of “main- taining” theatre performances of all kinds, including masquerades, balls and other forms of entertain- ment, for ten years. And it is from this date that Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre traces its history.

The Bolshoi building, which for many years now has been regarded as one of Moscow’s main sights, was opened on 20 October 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day. On 29 October 2002, the Bol- shoi was given a New Stage and it was here it presented its performances during the years the Historic Stage was undergoing massive reconstruction and refurbishment. The reconstruction project lasted from l July 2005 to 28 October 2011. As a result of this reconstruction, many lost features of the historic building were reinstated and, at the same time, it has joined the ranks of most technically equipped theatre buildings in the world.

The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it made to the history of the Russian performing arts. This history is on-going and today Bolshoi Theatre artists continue to contribute to it many bright pages.

Cafe Pushkin

After touring Moscow some 50 years ago, the famous French chansonnier Gilbert Bécaud wrote a song about Café Pushkin. The song became incredibly popular in France; the French were looking for “Pushkin’s Cafe” when they came to Moscow, but could not find it, for it was only Bécaud’s poetic fantasy. It was this song that inspired Andrei Dellos, one of the most prominent Russian restaurateurs, to open a restaurant that revived the Russian cuisine of the past centuries.

Cafe Pushkin opened in 1999 in a Baroque mansion on Tverskoy Boulevard. Gilbert Bécaud performed his famous song at its grand opening.

The main menu of the restaurant was compiled after a year of culinary experiments and a detailed study of hundreds of old recipes. Today it offers Russian and French courses of the Golden Age.

First a Grammy, Now the World: Tyla Takes Over

By Britt Hennemuth

Photography by Nick Riley Bentham

Styled by Olivia Weeden

Tyla wearing Loewe.

Tyla, the 22-year-old mononymous sensation, is climbing the charts and riding the global wave of South Africa’s amapiano rise. First, an earworm single, “Water”; next, a self-titled debut album. The Jo’burg local promises to be the sound of summer after snagging her first Grammy Award earlier this year. “Cher tapped me on the shoulder,” Tyla gushes about Grammy week. “She knew me!” When her first solo tour launches, so will everybody else.

Tyla wearing Hermès.

SHE GREW UP listening to Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men, and Brian McKnight. “Music is a huge part of the family. We are very, very close and whenever we come together, we are singing and dancing. My gran was a singer in her day. And this was always the plan. I knew since the beginning. Everyone knew.”

SHE SAID YES to every opportunity to perform—“talent shows, soirees, I’d do Adele, Miley Cyrus, Whitney Houston”—and ever since she arrived in a recording studio in high school, she’s hardly left. “I’ve been figuring out what I wanted to sound like, who I am as an artist. I’ve definitely made terrible songs while [doing that], but all those mistakes got us here.”

THINKING ABOUT “Water” reaching the number one spot on the R&B charts “is so crazy. My best friend and I talk about it every single day, ‘Remember four, three years ago where we were!’ From the outside, it may look like it’s all of a sudden, but for us, it feels like the right time.”

Image may contain Body Part Face Head Neck Person and Hair

HER FAMILY is proud, and her parents were her Grammy dates. “When I won, I was in front of that mic with nothing prepared, but there was a sense of peace. When I got backstage, my mother crying, my father smiling—they came to America for the first time and it was the best day ever. We were driving back to the house, blasting ‘Water’ in the car, just so, so happy.”

THE ALBUM may be a new sound for some, so she hopes listeners will come “with an open mind…. It makes me feel good, and I just hope it does the same for everyone.”

AFTER AN INJURY, Tyla’s tour was postponed. She promises the extra time to prepare means “it’s gonna be even bigger and better. Get ready.

royal buffet tours menu

Moscow is changing for the better!

This is the first thought that comes to mind when you look at the new building of the MODUS restaurant project in the historic lane of the Plyushchikhi district. A three-story mansion of majestic appearance, built in the neoclassical style, is truly impressive. Through the stained-glass Windows, the hall is flooded with sunlight during the day, inviting for Breakfast, and in the evening, the glow of crystal chandeliers in the Windows reflects the Church of the exaltation, by the way, the wedding place of Anton Chekhov. In the spacious restaurant hall, you can warm up by the warm fireplace, and the time spent on the soft sofas seems to slow down. The choice of menu items and the direction of cuisine dictates experience and a constant look to the future, because the MODUS restaurant concept has existed since 2004 and today opens in a new light and style, like a flower of life, symbolically reflected in the new MODUS restaurant logo.

MODUS RESTAURANT Interior

MODUS restaurant is a three – story mansion in the center of Moscow, the home of good friends on Plyushchikha.

The luxurious interior of the mansion was created by architect Irina Naryshkina and designer Anna Kurganova. Inside Jimmy Buffett’s Tribute Concert: McCartney, Margaritas, and One Hell of a Parrothead Party

  • By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

“Good evening, Hollywood-fucking-Bowl!” Paul McCartney exclaimed to the flock of Parrotheads gathered before him. A sold-out crowd had assembled in the famed Los Angeles venue on Thursday to celebrate the legacy of Jimmy Buffett at “Keep the Party Going,” a laid-back, one-night-only tribute show full of eclectic guests.

“I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy , and like everyone else on the bill tonight, I said, ‘This is one great man.’ He was generous. He was funny. He’d done just about everything in his life,” McCartney said, before launching into “Let It Be .” It was a song that McCartney said he’d played for Buffett at his home during the final week of his life. Buffett died in Sept. 1, 2023, at 76 after a battle with Merkel cell skin cancer.

Along with the stacked musical lineup, “Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett” featured introductions — some via video, some in person —  from Dolly Parton, James Taylor, Woody Harrelson, Pat Riley, and Dave Matthews. Harrison Ford was there in the flesh.

“There is no other way to say it: There will never be another like Jimmy,” Ford told the crowd, before introducing the Zac Brown Band as “one of Jimmy’s favorite and most-frequent collaborators.” The group jammed through the new track “Pirates & Parrots,” out April 19, and their collab with Buffett “Knee Deep,” with Brown literally taking off his pants to play the song in shorts and a tee backed by Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

“Jimmy enjoyed living life more than any person enjoyed living life,” the country star said. “I can remember we were hiking one day and we were heading up this vista and we started talking about music and songwriting and our careers and his life and my life, and death. And, ‘You know, Eric,’ [Jimmy] said, ‘Guys like us, we don’t really die.’ He said, ‘because the songs live forever.'”

“And this one will,” Church said, as the opening chords to “Son of a Son of a Sailor” rang out over the Bowl and an image of a sailboat drifting along the water was projected on a screen behind the musicians. Later, a projection of the Arc de Triopmhe appeared behind Jackson Browne as he sang his stirring rendition of “He Went to Paris,” one of Buffett’s greatest cuts from 1973’s A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean .

In the latter half, the set list shifted to songs that Buffett wasn’t exactly known for: Snoop Dogg took the stage for a performance of “Gin and Juice,” alongside psychedelic visuals of Buffett in the 2019 Matthew McConaughey film The Beach Bum . And Pitbull appeared to perform his own “Don’t Stop the Party” before being joined by Jon Bon Jovi for “Thank God & Jimmy Buffett.”

For the home stretch, Don Johnson — no stranger to pastels and warm-weather vibes from his Miami Vice days — called to the stage “a bunch of guys [they] used to hang out with back in the day” and introduced the Eagles . Led by Don Henley and Joe Walsh, the California icons played their own miniature set featuring Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” and the band’s “Take It to the Limit” and “In the City.” The Eagles hung around to back up McCartney on the Beatles’ “Let It Be.”
