QUIRINO PROVINCE TRAVEL GUIDE | Itinerary + Map [UPDATED 2022]

Quirino Province Travel Guide and Itinerary

Quirino is a land-locked province found on the north eastern part of the Philippine’s Luzon Island group. Composed of six municipalities , it is bordered by the provinces of Isabela on its north side, Aurora on its south east, and Nueva Vizcaya on its west. Named after former Philippine President Elpidio Quirino , it used to be a sub-province of Nueva Vizcaya. Popularly known as Quirino Province , the place is not usually found on the tourism map. But this does not mean that it has nothing to offer for visiting tourists. The province has massive and pristine caves for spelunking, river rapids for canoeing and tubing, exquisitely carved mountain gorges, verdant rolling hills that can rival those in Batanes, and—as of last count—twenty waterfalls all within its land area. Tourist spots in Quirino cater more to eco-adventurers more than the usual sight-seeing travelers. It is one of the most underrated places in the country for tourism, but has so much to offer once discovered. An itinerary of three days is the minimum to see most of Quirino Province’s tourist spots, but for a more thorough visit, you can stretch your itinerary to at least five to six days.

HOW TO GET TO QUIRINO PROVINCE

There’s no easy way to access Quirino Province from Metro Manila. Directly, one can take an overnight bus from Metro Manila and arrive at the town of Maddela the next morning. It’s time-consuming but less expensive than taking a one-hour flight from Cebu Pacific Air to Cauayan Airport in the neighboring town of Isabela. From there, one still has to ride a one and a half hour van ride to Cabarroguis, the province’s capital. Alternatively, one can also ride a one-hour flight to Tuguegarao City via Cebu Pacific Air and Philippine Airlines, then board a three-hour van ride to Quirino.

What it has are simple eateries like carinderias and panciterias where home-cooked dishes are served at very affordable prices. Be sure to buy early for dinner as most close by ten in the evening.

hello po,,, kindly edit po picture ng villa caridad kc picture po ng highlander hotel ng solano, n.v. yan,,, salamat po

Thanks for the heads up! Will do :)

Dapat makipag-coordinate ang city govt. ang Santiago at Quirino province para perfect ang itinerary. Santiago serves as the commercial and industrial center ng Quirino province din.

I passed by Santiago City on the way to Cabarroguis, and indeed it is quite the bustling city.

Sa Santiago City naman talaga namimili ang mga taga Quirino sa lapit. At halos araw araw.

For souvenir hunting visit DigitalMAX i-Cafe & Enterprises at Purok 6 Capitol Hills, San Marcos, Cabarroguis, Quirino (beside Palm Restaurant), the shop that promotes Tourism in Quirino Province. We have t-shirts, mugs, key chains, ref magnets, etc.

Nice! Didn't see that place when we visited Quirino, on our next tour perhaps :)

Thanks!this is a big help.. I'm planning to do my first solo backpacking in quirino before this year end.. :)

More or less mgkano budget po kng solo traveller?

Will post a travel budget soon :)

Pls contact the Provl Tourism officefor details at cp 09175000162 look for Ms Aurea Martinez, Tourism Officer.

Sulit ang pagpunta namin sa Quirino last February sa 1 night 2 days napuntahan namin Aglipay caves, governors's rapid, siitin river, diamond cave, landingan point. Enjoy kami sa river tubing at lahat. Kung gusto nyo commune with the nature punta kayo sa QUIRINO PROVINCE, Babalikan pa namin mga waterfalls.

Interesting place, how much kaya ang budget for solo ?

Hi Christian! Can you give me a sample breakdown of expenses for you 3D2N trip in Quirino? I've been wanting to visit that place may it be solo or with a group. Big thanks!

Hi Lemuel, will post about the expenses for Quirino soon :)

I would like to make a correction if I may. Quirino was never a province of Nueva Vizcaya as stated. It was a sub province of Nueva Vizcaya until 1971.The province of Quirino was formally established in 1972 upon the assumption to office of the first elected governor Dionisio A. Sarandi of Maddela, Quirino.

Hi M, correction noted! Edited the article. Thanks! :)

Quirino has never been a part of Nueva Vizcaya but instead a portion of Isabela...but instead Quirino used to be a part Of Aurora, geographically but for political reason and easily for economic development too.

Hi, I really love this article. I was wondering if I can do a road trip using your itinerary, what challenges do you think i'll have? I am also starting to get into photography, and are there any specific site you suggest as "not to miss"? thanks!

Hi Alfredo, sorry for the late reply. You can definitely do a roadtrip to Quirino, it would be easier than commuting since most of the tourist spots are far apart and public transportation is limited. My favorite would be Siitan River. :)

Quirino Province: Things to Do + 2 Days Itinerary

Have you been to Quirino Province? If not yet, then it’s time to include it in your travel plans! This obscure destination offers a lot of eco-adventure activities — including hiking, spelunking, rafting, and chasing waterfalls. Here’s our guide + a sample 2-day itinerary to Quirino for those who are looking to visit on a weekend.

About Quirino

How to get to quirino, how to get around, cabarroguis, 2 day itinerary in quirino, what to eat, where to stay, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Quirino is unique in its topology and culture. It’s a landlocked province in Luzon, surrounded by the Sierra Madre and Marampang mountain ranges. About 80% of its landmass is composed of mountains and hills — as such, the province is blessed with elaborate cave systems, rolling hills, waterfalls, and rivers!

Quirino has six municipalities: Aglipay, Diffun, Maddela, Nagtipunan, Saguday, and Cabarroguis. Cabarroguis is the capital of Quirino.

Toblerone Hills in Quirino

I went to Quirino for the first time in 2019 for a 2-day trip. It’s one of the most underrated provinces I’d been to. The whole province has this raw and rugged feel, the places we’d seen were amazing. I feel like this is the perfect area to explore for those who likes backpacking, nature tripping, and looking for still “undiscovered” areas.

Here’s how to get from Manila to Quirino via public transport:

There are no airports in Quirino Province, so you will need to book flights to nearby airports instead.

  • Fly to Cauayan (Isabela). This is the closest airport to Quirino. From there, take a van to Cabarroguis. Travel time is 1-2 hours.
  • Another option is to fly to Tuguegarao. Then take a van to Cabarroguis. Travel time is 3-4 hours.

There are bus lines that go from Manila to Quirino. The schedule is daily and usually leaves at night, so you’ll arrive in the morning. Travel time is around 8 hours.

  • From Cubao, ride a Five Star bus bound for Maddela, Cabbaroguis, or Diffun.
  • From Sampaloc, ride a GV Florida bound for Maddela.
  • Another option is to ride a bus to Santiago (Isabela Province). From Santiago, there are public transports that can take you to the towns in Quirino.

Once you get to Quirino, there are public transports such as tricycles, jeepneys, and vans to take you to different towns and tourist attractions. You can also charter a vehicle for day tours.

My advise is to bring your own car when going to and exploring Quirino because I find the transport somewhat limited.

What to see and do in Quirino

Here are the best places to see + things to do in Quirino. I’ve written them in a specific order which you can easily follow in your map.

Diffun is the gateway to Quirino Province. One of the best things you can do here is trekking and exploring waterfalls.

Ganano Falls is the most sought-after waterfall in Diffun. It’s located in the midst of a mountain and features an amazing 100-feet drop. It can be reached by an hour of trekking which includes river crossings. This is one of the best waterfalls in the country I’d seen.

Ganano Falls in Diffun, Quirino

While on the road in Diffun, you can also see Nagbukel Formation and Nagbukel Tree Park .

Cabarroguis is the capital of Quirino Province. As such it’s also where you can find most accommodations and homestays, as well as restaurants.

Group shot in Quirino

Here you can visit the Quirino Capital Complex . This is a government enclave with 2 resort-type lodgings, track oval, and the Quirino Watersports Complex. If you’re looking for a cultural tour, you can check out the Quirino Provincial Museum as well.

A must-do when you visit Quirino is exploring the Aglipay Cave and System . This cave system has 37 chambers, 8 of which are open to guests. The chambers offer varying caving difficulties, but generally this activity is ideal even for beginners.

You can also drop by the Quirino Experiment Station (Department of Agriculture) to buy organic farm products to take home.

Another must-do in Quirino is doing the 2-hour river cruise in Governor’s Rapids . Governor’s Rapids is part of Cagayan River, which is the longest river system in the country. During the cruise, you can relax on the boat while admiring the natural limestone formations, cliff jump from 30-foot rocks, or take a swim in a waterfall inside Bisangal Cave. This is a really fun experience that I recommend not to miss!

Governor's Rapids in Quirino

Nagtipunan is the largest municipality in Quirino. As it’s the closest one to the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, it features beautiful rolling hills. You’ll see these and other scenic areas when you drive across its zigzag mountain roads.

A popular spot in Nagtipunan is the Landingan Viewpoint , which sits on top of a hill. It offers a view of the green fields and Siitan River, which is also part of Cagayan River.

Kat in Landingan Viewpoint

Diamond Cave is another must-see. In fact, it’s one of my favorite experiences in Quirino. Although the tour inside is shorter than Aglipay Cave, it’s still worth seeing the “sparkling” stalactites and stalagmites inside.

Kat in Diamond Cave in Quirino

Finally, there’s the Siitan Nature Park . It’s a “cousin” of Governor’s Rapids. It also offers river cruise activity where you can see the Bimmapor Rock Formation.

There are other lesser-known tourist attractions in Quirino, including a number of waterfalls, rivers, etc. I’ve only listed what I believe are the best ones so you can maximize your visit.

Here’s a sample 2-day itinerary in Quirino, for weekend travelers.

For those who truly want to cross off everything that’s worth seeing here, an ideal stay would be 3-4 days.

This is a jam-packed itinerary, but it’s doable — you need to manage your time well. Make sure to follow your schedule and wake up early!

You can still use this itinerary as a rough guide even if you simply want to go sightseeing.

Here are the rates ( Updated as of 2020 ):

If you’re in a group, a safe budget would be around P3500 each person for a 2-day stay.

Quirino offers a variety of local dishes.

At D’Fields Homestay, we ate home-cooked meals. They were simple but good! We had black rice and blue rice, fresh vegetables, and delicious ulams.

Rice in Quirino

Here are other food/pasalubong you should try:

Tubikoy

  • Tubikoy. A combination of tubig, bibingka, and tikoy. You can get this at RNB Tubikoy in Diffun. At first I was skeptical of this pie since it sounds weird to me, but it’s actually good!
  • Pancit cabagan and pancit batil patung . Quirino has their own version of Cagayan’s famous noodles. A popular place to get this is MJ Snack and Pancit Cabagan Restaurant, who makes their own noodles.
  • Tilanggit . This is dried fish, perfect as pasalubong.

There are hotels and various homestays you can book in Quirino. Most tourists stay at Cabarroguis, which is the capital of Quirino.

We stayed at D’Fields Homestay in Nagtipunan. This is a casual family-owned lodging. I recommend it since it’s budget-friendly and our host prepares delicious local meals.

  • I recommend securing a tour guide via the tourism office. The tourist attractions in Quirino are remote and far away from each other — it always helps to have someone who knows the area. In addition, I always recommend hiring a guide because you’re helping the local livelihood as well.
  • A lot of activities in Quirino can be physically tiring. If you’re with elderly or people who do not want to engage in activities, worry not — there is a lot of sightseeing you can do here as well.

How to Get to Quirino

Traveling by land is the typical choice for reaching Quirino, but there are also flight options from Manila to either Cauayan in Isabela, the nearest airport to Quirino, or Tuguegarao airport. Upon arrival at either airport, you can catch a van to Cabarroguis, Quirino.

By Land Travel

You can find regular bus services departing from Manila, often with nighttime departures, which usually take approximately 8 hours to reach Quirino.

The Five Star bus company in Cubao, Quezon City, operates buses heading to Maddela, Cabbaroguis, and Diffun in Quirino. Another alternative is the GV Florida bus company departing from Sampaloc, Manila, with buses bound for Maddela.

Do-It-Yourself or Join a Tour

If embarking on a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) journey to Quirino seems daunting, there’s an alternative option to consider: joining a tour organized by various event planners and tour operators. While public transportation is available within Quirino, navigating from one place to another can be somewhat challenging. If you don’t have access to your own car or motorcycle, participating in an organized tour is a recommended choice, as we did.

As a solo traveler, I opted to join Gala PH, a tour provider offering regular trips to Quirino. They have a well-structured 2-day itinerary that includes visits to some of the province’s renowned attractions such as Landingan Viewpoint, the Governor’s rapid, Aglipay Cave, Ganano Falls, and many more.

How the Itinerary Goes

The proposed itinerary is ideal for individuals seeking a weekend escape following a busy workweek.

Participants typically gather between 8 PM and 9 PM in Metro Manila on a Friday, often at the Greenfield area in Mandaluyong. Depending on the number of participants, the organizer may arrange alternative pick-up locations. Diffun Chasing Waterfalls and Hiking

We arrived in Diffun, Quirino, just in time for a beautiful sunrise, passing through picturesque green fields and hills.

Our Day 1 agenda consists of a trek to various waterfall spots, commencing from the Baguio Village jump-off point. This area is inhabited by a diverse mix of residents hailing from Benguet and nearby provinces in the Cordillera region, which is how it got its name.

Before embarking on the trek, enjoy a quick breakfast in the village, then head to the registration area in the covered court, where you’ll receive an orientation and be assigned a tour guide.

The trek begins around 7 AM. The trail leads through a bamboo forest, a brief river crossing, a hanging bridge, and lush green forests, with several stations and signs where you can rest.

The highlight of this trek is Ganano Falls , boasting numerous natural pools, boulders, and a stunning backdrop for photos and a refreshing dip. It stands at an estimated 100 feet in height. Our visit was in May, so the water flow might not have been as vigorous, but the place remains incredible and well worth the trek, especially with like-minded nature and adventure enthusiasts.

On the return journey to the jump-off point, you’ll pass by another waterfall known as Sabangaran Falls . This falls features a three-meter-high cascade and shallow waters perfect for swimming.
