Jet skiing offers an experience like no other for vacationing all year round. Feel the wind on your face and work out your body while enjoying the natural beauty and wildlife of our lakes, rivers, and oceans. No other experience on the water feels so freeing and playful, allowing you to go at a pace that suits you.

For gentle sightseeing or exhilarating riding waves, making jet skiing a part of your vacation combines fun and relaxation for the whole family.

The Benefits of Jet Ski Travel

The Benefits of Jet Ski Travel

There are lots of water sports that people enjoy during vacation. None of them provide as many benefits and as big of a fun factor as riding a jet ski. With freedom, exercise, and immersion in nature, a jet ski adds true adventure to your vacation.

Freedom to explore a wider area

Lake and ocean swimming, for most people, only allows you to explore a small area of water, and boat or walking tours are often very regimented and can feel more like a school field trip. Riding a jet ski lets you explore a wider area at your own pace, with maximum freedom.

Great exercise

Jet skiing works out your body and builds strength and endurance. Jet skiing burns a lot of calories, allowing you to enjoy those delicious vacation dinners and treats completely guilt-free.

Improves balance

Keeping yourself up on a jet ski not only gives the body a great workout but also improves your balance.

Get close to nature

While riding on the water you get both great views of stunning scenery and an up-close experience with wildlife in the area.

Great for mental health

Engaging in play is vital for all of us at any age. Jet skis are fun and that's important. The adrenaline of feeling the wind in your face while exercising your body gives you a high that melts worries and daily stress.

Choosing a Destination

Choosing a Destination

Choosing the perfect destination for your next jet ski adventure depends on what you wish to see, do, and experience during your trip. Jet skiing trips range from sandy shores and rocky canyons to serene mirror-like lakes and open cityside rivers. Factors to consider when choosing a destination:

The time of year

Some destinations are only available for jet skiing seasonally. Others are open and sunny year-round. Whether you are looking for fresh summer fun or an escape from the cold during a long winter, there are places with jet skis waiting for you. If you wish to stay on the water Many lake locations for jet skiing trips feature houseboat rentals. Renting a houseboat offers the chance to spend your vacation living, sleeping, and playing on the water.

Wildlife patterns

If you hope to see your favorite wildlife at your destination, be sure to look into its seasonal and daytime habits for the best chance to see them up close.

Other activities available

Your choice of jet ski destination will vary based on what you like to do with the rest of your time. Whether you are looking for serene and quiet relaxation or to spend the nights dancing in the clubs, there is a jet ski vacation that will suit you.

Best Jet Ski Locations

The United States is abundant with amazing locations to jet ski. Here are 8 of the best places to consider for your next jet-skiing adventure.

Miami Beach Florida

Miami Beach, Florida

No list of jet ski destinations would be complete without a mention of Miami Beach, Florida. Expansive blue-green Atlantic ocean water with intracoastal waterways to explore to change up the pace.

The views of Miami’s stunning skylines, beaches, and palm trees never get old. All year-round sunshine makes this one of the most popular destinations for beginners and experts.

Surrounded by the homes of the rich and famous, Miami’s air of opulence from Art Deco South Beach to sightings of superyachts, there is always something to see on the water of this South Florida playground.

New York Harbor

New York Harbor

One of the most unique ways to see the classic sights of New York City is jet skiing in New York Harbor. Where The East River meets The Hudson River, grab the opportunity to see famous landmarks in a completely different way.

A jet skiing tour of the harbor gives you views of:

  • The Statue of Liberty
  • Ellis Island
  • The New York Skyline
  • The Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges
  • The Empire State Building
  • Freedom Tower

Silver River Florida

Silver River, Florida

Tucked away in central Florida, The Silver River is the outflow of Florida’s Silver Springs. Surprisingly serene and mirror-like blue-green waters make this jet ski trail a must-see for nature lovers.

Despite its location in hot and humid central Florida, the water in these crystal clear springs stays around 72 degrees, for a refreshing and unique vacation.

The river and forests of surrounding trees are home to expected and unexpected Florida wildlife. Watch gators sunbathing by the river banks and monkeys, yes monkeys, swinging around the tree tops. Silver River is a serene getaway and a true escape into nature.

Lake Cumberland

Lake Cumberland

A true gem of Kentucky and technically a reservoir rather than a lake, Lake Cumberland is a watersports paradise.

With over 1200 miles of shoreline and sandy beaches, this huge lake features boating, fishing, jet skiing, tubing, and many more water sport options.

Lake Cumberland is a perfect destination for people who love to stay active on their vacation while enjoying the serenity of the country.

Marco Island

Marco Island

Nestled on the South West Coast of Florida, this Gulf destination is a paradise for lovers of wildlife and exploration. The mangrove forests of Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge are home to an array of marine life, including:

  • Bald eagles
  • Sea turtles

Best explored on a jet ski, boats cannot reach all the beautiful spots in this mangrove forest area.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe, a glacial lake of crisp, clear water on the border of California and Nevada, is a must-see for people who love the outdoors.

More accessible for people in the West than other lake options, jet skiing is one of the most popular activities for people visiting the area.

Lake Tahoe is an immersive experience in nature with stunning views of mountains and lush greenery for miles around. With country-style cabins and lodges as popular accommodations, this traditional country destination feels like a vacation with mother earth.

Seeing these views from the freedom of a jet ski allows you to take in all the breathtaking sights while letting your inner child out to play on more than 122,000 acres of open water.

Lake Powell

Image Credit: Brigitte Werner / Pixabay

Lake Powell

Nestled between canyons on the border of Arizona and Utah, Lake Powell is a unique destination for jet skiing.

While many favorite jet ski destinations are known for ocean views and forest greenery, Lake Powell delivers a desert vibe for a completely different experience.

Jet ski across the 250-mile shoreline with views of splendid red and orange rock formations. Antelope Canyon provides a treat for skiers looking for a more advanced trail. Perfect for trips during off seasons in Northern states, the clear, sunny, and predictable weather makes Lake Powell a year-round winner.

House boating vacations are popular on Lake Powell, where vacationers love to spend as much of their trip on the water as possible.

Lake Placid - Mirror Lake

Lake Placid - Mirror Lake

Nestled in a freshwater, mountainous paradise, Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, NY is a jet skier's dream. Named for its perfectly still waters, this country retreat is surrounded by thick forests with changing leaves worthy of postcards near the fall. It's a place of gentle serenity where you can let your inner child play with abandon.

Jet skiing on these waters is fun, fresh, and exhilarating. With only one goal in mind—having fun surrounded by nature—you'll be able to explore the lake's many coves and inlets, or simply cruise along the shoreline taking in the scenery.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, Mirror Lake is the perfect place to jet ski. But even if you're a beginner, you'll be able to enjoy the lake's calm waters and stunning views.

Safety Guidelines

Safety Guidelines

Jet skiing adventures are fun ways to work out the body, relax the mind and explore the wonders of nature. They are still very high-powered and heavy machines that we use on bodies of water that can be dangerous. To keep the fun going, always stay safe when riding and take safety precautions for yourself, others, and local wildlife.

Never forget safety gear

As hot as the weather can be in some of these beautiful jet ski destinations, never be tempted to drop the safety gear. A life jacket is non-negotiable no matter how advanced your swimming skills are. Accidents can happen quickly and injury can prevent you from swimming. Protect your skin by reapplying sunscreen regularly, as once in the morning will not be enough.

Always check your gas tank

It may sound a little obvious, but this simple habit can save you many frustrated and potentially dangerous hours on the water if you run out of gas. Make it a habit to always check your gas level before setting off, even if somebody else says that it is taken care of. After all, if you run out of gas on the water, they won't be the ones getting stuck!

Spark plugs

As they spend so much time around the water, jet ski spark plugs are prone to rust and can affect the performance of your engine. You can help to avoid vacation disappointments by starting your day with mechanical problems by checking your spark plugs for rust before your trip.

Environmental responsibility

Environmental responsibility

Waterports, particularly with our motorized toys, come with some environmental factors to consider. Aside from the potential carbon emissions of using an abundance of gasoline, we need to ensure that we preserve these natural wonder spots for the future.

When we jet ski, we share the water space with marine life. These plants, animals, and birds make these beautiful destinations what they are and are vital to the ecosystems of our waterways. When we jet ski in these waters, we must do everything we can to protect marine life and water quality for generations to come.

Consider an electric jet ski

Innovations in watersports technology are moving fast. Many eco-conscious manufacturers and rental companies offer electric jet skis as an alternative option. Aside from not using fossil fuels, electric jet skis are quieter than gas alternatives which cause less distress for marine animals and birds in the area.

Take care when refueling

A lot of avoidable environmental damage occurs by simple carelessness with fuel. Spilled gasoline can kill both marine plant and animal life. By carefully refueling your jet ski to avoid unnecessary spillage we can save pollution from avoidable accidents.

  • Fill up your jet ski on land whenever possible
  • Overfilling the tank can lead to spillage
  • Use a spill-proof nozzle if you need to fill up while on the water
  • Be prepared with absorbent pads just in case of any spillage

Jet skiing offers the ultimate outdoor fun for your vacation. With physical exercise, mental health benefits, beautiful scenery, and a chance to play in nature.

Each of these beautiful destinations is an opportunity to have fun riding and take in some of the most breathtaking views in the country.

Seeing these unique places from the water gives you an up close and personal experience with nature that you won't get from taking a boat or walking tour.

Making It Happen

Although travel guides inspire us with ideas about what is possible for our next adventure, it is vital not to get stuck in a "one-day," mentality. The feelings of freedom, serenity, and playfulness of a jet skiing trip

What Is Jet Skiing?

Jet skiing is a thrilling water sport that allows you to ride on a personal watercraft, gliding across the waves and feeling the wind in your hair.

The Origins of the Jet Ski

The jet ski came to life in the late 1960s. It was an idea of a man named Clayton Jacobson II . He thought about making a vessel that would work on water just like his dirt bike did on land.

Clayton’s hard work paid off and he made the first “stand-up” jet ski. This kind of jet ski needs you to stand up while you ride it. Kawasaki, a big company from Japan, liked his idea.

They started selling these new machines under the name “Jet Ski”. The term is now used for all such watercrafts, much like we use “Kleenex” for tissue! Today, there are many types of jet skis out there ready for us ocean adventurers to ride and have fun with!

How to Ride a Jet Ski

Riding a jet ski is an amazing experience that allows you to feel the thrill of adventure on the open water. Here are some important things to know about riding a jet ski:

  • Start by familiarizing yourself with the controls and safety features of the jet ski. This includes understanding how to accelerate and brake, as well as how to use the throttle and handlebars for maneuvering.
  • Always wear a life jacket for your safety, even if you’re a strong swimmer. It’s also recommended to wear protective gear such as goggles and a wetsuit , especially if you’ll be riding at high speeds or in rough waters.
  • Before getting on the jet ski, make sure you have a basic understanding of how it operates. This includes knowing where the kill switch is located in case of an emergency.
  • When mounting the jet ski, approach from the side and step onto it carefully to maintain balance. Keep your weight centered and evenly distributed while riding.
  • Practice proper etiquette on the water by being aware of other boaters and adhering to any speed limits or no-wake zones in place.
  • Start off slowly to get comfortable with handling the jet ski, gradually increasing your speed as you gain confidence.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings at all times, especially when navigating through crowded areas or near shorelines.
  • If you’re new to jet skiing, consider taking a guided tour or lessons from an experienced instructor who can teach you proper technique and ensure your safety.

Jet Ski Controls and Safety Features

Hi there, ocean adventurers! Let me tell you about the exciting world of jet skiing and all the amazing benefits it offers. One important aspect to know about is the controls and safety features of a jet ski. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Jet skis have easy-to-use controls that allow you to steer and control the speed with just a few simple movements.
  • The handlebars are used for steering, while the throttle lever controls the speed of the jet ski.
  • Most jet skis come equipped with a kill switch, which is a safety feature that shuts off the engine if you fall off or become separated from the craft.
  • It’s important to wear a life jacket at all times while riding a jet ski to ensure your safety in case of any accidents or emergencies.
  • Before hopping on a jet ski, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with its safety features and understand how they work.

Types of Jet Skis

There are different types of jet skis available for ocean adventurers like me. Here are some options to consider:

  • Stand-Up Jet Skis : These jet skis require the rider to stand while operating them. They provide a more intense and thrilling experience, perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush.
  • Sit-Down Jet Skis : These jet skis allow the rider to sit comfortably while enjoying the ride. They are more stable and easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners or those who prefer a more relaxed experience.
  • Two-Seater Jet Skis : These jet skis have enough space for two people, allowing friends or couples to enjoy the adventure together. It’s a great option for those who want to share the fun.
  • Performance Jet Skis : These jet skis are designed for speed and agility, offering a high-performance riding experience. They are ideal for experienced riders who want to push their limits on the water.
  • Recreation Jet Skis : These jet skis are versatile and suitable for various water activities. They offer a balance between performance and comfort, making them a popular choice among recreational riders.

Choosing the Right Jet Ski for Beginners

When it comes to choosing the right jet ski for beginners, there are a few important factors to consider. First of all, you’ll want to think about your skill level and experience with water sports .

If you’re new to jet skiing, it’s best to start with a model that is easy to handle and maneuver . Look for a jet ski with beginner-friendly features such as a stable hull design and user-friendly controls .

Another important consideration is the engine size . For beginners, it’s usually recommended to start with a smaller engine that offers less power . This will allow you to gradually build up your skills and confidence before moving on to more powerful models.

Safety should always be a top priority when choosing a jet ski. Look for models that come equipped with safety features such as an emergency shut-off switch , rear-facing boarding step, and automatic bilge pump.

Jet Ski Rental vs. Jet Ski Excursion

When considering your next water adventure, deciding between a jet ski rental or a jet ski excursion can be a tough choice. There are key differences between the two that may sway your decision.

Each option has its appeal and the choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences and comfort level.

What to Know Before Jet Skiing?

Before jet skiing, it is important to know what to wear and what not to wear, as well as who should avoid this water sport.

What to Wear

When going on a guided jet ski tour, it is important to wear the right gear for a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s what I recommend wearing:

  • Life jacket : Always wear a properly fitting life jacket that is approved by the Coast Guard. This will help keep you safe in case of any unexpected falls or accidents.
  • Wetsuit or swimwear : Depending on the weather and water temperature, consider wearing a wetsuit or appropriate swimwear. This will ensure you stay comfortable throughout the ride.
  • Water shoes : Opt for sturdy water shoes that provide good grip and protection for your feet. They will prevent slips and protect you from sharp objects in the water.
  • Sunglasses : Protect your eyes from the sun’s glare by wearing polarized sunglasses . They will also shield your eyes from any splashes while riding.
  • Sunscreen : Apply sunscreen generously before heading out on your jet ski tour. Choose a waterproof sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

What Not to Wear

When jet skiing, it’s important to wear the right gear to ensure safety and comfort. Here are some things you should avoid wearing:

  • Loose clothing : Avoid wearing loose clothing that can get caught in the jet ski’s moving parts or cause distractions while riding.
  • Baggy swimwear : Opt for snug-fitting swimwear instead of baggy styles that may hinder your movement or get tangled in the equipment.
  • Jewelry : Leave your valuable jewelry at home. It can easily be lost or damaged while jet skiing, especially if it falls into the water.
  • Open-toed shoes : Don’t wear open-toed shoes like flip-flops or sandals. They offer little protection and can easily slip off while riding.
  • Long hair down : Keep your hair tied back to prevent it from obstructing your view or becoming entangled in the equipment.

Who Should Avoid Jet Skiing?

If you have certain medical conditions , it might be best to avoid jet skiing. People with back problems , heart conditions , and pregnant women should not go jet skiing because it could put their health at risk .

It’s always important to prioritize your safety and well-being when engaging in any water sport activity. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before trying out new activities like jet skiing.

Jet Ski vs. Boat: Comparing Two Popular Watercraft Options

Jet skis offer superior maneuverability and a thrilling, up-close experience of the water compared to boats. Discover why choosing a jet ski for your next adventure on the water could elevate your experience to new heights.

Performance and Maneuverability

Jet skis are known for their impressive performance and maneuverability on the water . These powerful machines can reach high speeds , allowing riders to feel the thrill of speeding across the waves. With their agile handling , jet skis can easily navigate tight turns and curves , giving riders a sense of control and excitement. Whether you’re zipping through open waters or exploring hidden coves and channels, jet skis provide an exhilarating ride that is unmatched by other watercraft. So if you’re looking for an adventure-packed experience with plenty of speed and agility, guided jet ski tours are definitely worth considering!

Safety and Learning Curve

Safety should always be a priority when it comes to jet skiing. Learning how to ride a jet ski and understanding the safety features is crucial for a fun and safe experience. Jet skis have controls that are easy to learn, such as the throttle and handlebars. They also come with safety features like kill switches and lanyards, which can shut off the engine if you fall off. It’s important to wear proper safety gear, including a life jacket and protective clothing.

When starting out, it’s recommended to choose a beginner-friendly jet ski that is easy to maneuver and control. If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer to your question: Jet skiing through Antelope Canyon is possible during certain seasons when water levels allow, by joining a guided tour that provides wet suits, jet skis, and leads you through the lower canyon’s famous sleek orange and purple walls .

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to plan your own jet ski adventure through one of the American Southwest’s most jaw-dropping slots canyons.

Is Jet Skiing Actually Allowed in Antelope Canyon?

Antelope Canyon, located in Arizona, is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the United States. Its stunning sandstone formations and vibrant colors have made it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. But what about jet skiing?

Is it possible to experience the beauty of Antelope Canyon from the thrilling perspective of a jet ski?

Lower vs. Upper Antelope Canyon

Before we dive into the question of jet skiing, it’s important to understand the distinction between Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon. Lower Antelope Canyon is known for its narrow passageways and unique rock formations, while Upper Antelope Canyon features wider spaces and the famous light beams that attract photographers from around the world.

Unfortunately, jet skiing is not allowed in either Lower or Upper Antelope Canyon. The Navajo Nation, which manages the canyon, has strict regulations in place to protect the fragile environment and preserve its natural beauty.

These regulations prohibit any motorized watercraft, including jet skis, from entering the canyon.

Navajo-Guided Tours

Although you can’t jet ski through Antelope Canyon, there are still plenty of ways to explore its magnificent beauty. The Navajo Nation offers guided tours that allow visitors to walk through the canyon and witness its awe-inspiring sights up close.

These tours are led by knowledgeable Navajo guides who share the history, geology, and cultural significance of the canyon.

It’s important to note that the popularity of Antelope Canyon has led to limited access and high demand for these guided tours. It is strongly recommended to make reservations in advance to secure your spot.

Additionally, photography enthusiasts may want to consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or opting for specialized photography tours to capture the canyon’s beauty without the crowds.

So, while jet skiing may not be allowed in Antelope Canyon, there are still plenty of incredible experiences waiting for you in this natural wonder. Whether you choose to explore on foot or take a guided tour, Antelope Canyon is sure to leave you in awe of its awe-inspiring beauty.

When to Go Jet Skiing Antelope Canyon

Seasonality and water flows.

If you’re planning to go jet skiing through the stunning Antelope Canyon, it’s important to consider the seasonality and water flows of the area. The best time to visit Antelope Canyon for jet skiing is during the spring and early summer months.

This is when the water levels are typically higher, allowing for a smoother and more enjoyable experience on the water. Additionally, the weather during this time is usually mild and comfortable, making it the perfect time to explore the canyon.

It’s worth noting that the water levels in Antelope Canyon can vary depending on the amount of rainfall and snowmelt in the region. It’s always a good idea to check the current water conditions before planning your trip.

You can find this information on the official Antelope Canyon website or by contacting local authorities.

Avoiding the Summer Crowds

While the summer months may seem like an ideal time to go jet skiing, it’s important to consider the crowds that come with it. Antelope Canyon is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer, and can get quite crowded.

This can lead to longer wait times and a less enjoyable experience on the water.

To avoid the summer crowds, consider visiting Antelope Canyon during the weekdays or early mornings. These times tend to be less busy, allowing you to have a more peaceful and uninterrupted jet skiing experience.

Additionally, visiting during the shoulder seasons, such as spring or fall, can also help you avoid the summer crowds while still enjoying favorable weather and water conditions.

Remember to always follow safety guidelines and regulations when jet skiing in Antelope Canyon. Be aware of other watercrafts and respect the natural environment. By choosing the right time to go jet skiing and being mindful of the crowds, you can have an amazing and memorable experience in this stunning natural wonder.

What to Expect While Jet Skiing Antelope Canyon

Stunning orange and purple walls.

When jet skiing through Antelope Canyon, one can expect to be surrounded by breathtaking orange and purple walls that seem to rise high into the sky. The unique coloration of these walls is caused by the erosion of sandstone over millions of years, creating a mesmerizing display of nature’s beauty.

As the sunlight filters through the narrow openings above, it creates a stunning interplay of light and shadows, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of the canyon.

Narrow Lower Canyon Passages

As you navigate through Antelope Canyon on your jet ski, be prepared for the thrill of maneuvering through narrow passages. The lower canyon, in particular, offers a thrilling experience as you navigate through tight corners and narrow gaps between the towering walls.

This adds an element of excitement and adventure to your jet skiing expedition, making it an unforgettable experience.

It is important to note that while jet skiing through Antelope Canyon can be an exhilarating experience, it is crucial to adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations. The canyon’s unique geographical features require caution and attention to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

For more information about Antelope Canyon and jet skiing opportunities, you can visit the official website of the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department: https://navajoparks.org/antelope-canyon/ . Here, you can find detailed information about permits, safety guidelines, and any additional requirements for jet skiing in this stunning natural wonder.

How to Prepare for Your Jet Ski Adventure

Wet suit essentials.

When embarking on a thrilling jet ski adventure through the stunning Antelope Canyon, it is essential to come prepared with the right gear. One of the most important items to consider is a wet suit.

A wet suit will not only provide insulation and keep you warm in the cool waters, but it will also protect your skin from potential scratches or abrasions. Make sure to choose a wet suit that fits snugly but allows for freedom of movement.

Additionally, don’t forget to wear appropriate footwear to protect your feet from the rough surfaces or hidden obstacles in the water. Water shoes or neoprene booties are recommended for maximum comfort and safety.

Water, Sunscreen, and Camera Gear

Staying hydrated during your jet ski adventure is crucial, so be sure to pack plenty of water. The desert heat can be intense, and it’s essential to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Consider bringing a reusable water bottle to minimize waste and stay eco-friendly.

Don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Apply a waterproof sunscreen with a high SPF before getting on your jet ski. Reapply every couple of hours to ensure maximum protection. Wearing a hat and sunglasses can also provide additional shade and reduce the risk of sunburn.

Lastly, capture the breathtaking beauty of the Antelope Canyon with a waterproof camera. There are many options available, from action cameras to compact waterproof cameras. Make sure to secure your camera properly to prevent any accidents, and don’t forget to bring extra memory cards or batteries to capture every remarkable moment.

How to Jet Ski from Miami to the Bahamas (2022)

Jet Ski To The Bahamas

It’s the dream of many to ride a jet ski to another country such as the Bahamas. Consider it an international expedition with a jet ski. The best part is that you don’t need to travel far from Miami.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: COVID-19 Restrictions mean that current information changes frequently. What was written 5 minutes ago may not be relevant now. It’s best to refer to government websites and media outlets in both countries before planning.

In normal times, you can easily travel by jet ski from Miami to the Bahamas in a day trip, but it will require some preparation. I’ll show you how (assuming we’re not in a Pandemic) in this detailed guide.

Long Distance Jet Ski Touring Bahamas From Miami

Let’s jump straight into it!

Preparing Your Jet Ski for The Bahamas

It all really comes in the planning stages. I’d recommend that you do the following:

Jet Ski To The Bahamas From Florida

  • Pack your passport! You will need it to get past customs on both ends. Some people forget that it has to have a few months worth of expiry left.
  • Exchange your US dollars into Bahamian dollar before you leave home. It’s harder to exchange dollars at most places, plus some places aren’t authorized to change money either.
  • Make sure your jet ski has had a recent service and is fully clean with no leaks. It’s
  • Check the weather! This can make the difference between fun and frustration.
  • Fuel up your jet ski to the very top plus check your oil levels too.
  • Double-check you have everything, including at least 5 litres of fresh drinking water.
  • Ask a buddy to join you , as riding a jet ski to the Bahamas is lonely to do solo. There are group rides that open to the public leaving Miami every weekend, as long as the weather is great!

It really doesn’t take that much more than a normal day of riding, apart from some additional preparation. The biggest one, of course, is the passport that you’ll need to pack in a dry bag. I know several riders who got their passports wet when riding, so don’t avoid that mistake.

Setting a Route to The Bahamas

There are multiple ways to travel by jet ski from Miami to the Bahamas.

Here are 3 routes that are quite popular:

  • Fort Lauderdale to Freeport (the longest route)
  • Miami to Bimini which only takes 1.5 hours by jet ski
  • Fort Lauderdale to Bimini (quite a popular route)

These are the more popular tourist spots. If you want something a little quieter, then there are numerous spots you can find but you’ll still need to clear customs at either Bimini or Freeport before going to have a picnic or stay overnight.

Returning to the United States

On the return to the United States, expect to be questioned by Customs as to what you were doing away. This is because they are very security-conscious about people doing the wrong thing between countries. You know what I mean.

I would advise that you aim to return long before sunrise. You or someone else might have a mechanical issue on the return which could require towing. Trust me: the extra sunshine hours will come in helpful.

The other issue is that often the boat ramp is busy in the late afternoon. Retrieving a jet ski at nighttime is a riskier process and it’s also not that fun being bitten by insects at the boat ramp.

Riding a personal watercraft to the Bahamas and back in a day is great fun! You can also combine it with jet ski camping or simply stay at one of the many beach-side huts. Their 24/7 security can mind your jet ski while you’re sleeping, or you can buy a PWC lock or set an alarm system.

How To Jet Ski From Miami To The Bahamas Infographic

Group riding is so much fun and often there is a support boat to carry extra gas. I do know of several people who have done it solo but it is riskier.

Either way, have fun and stay safe!

Weather Conditions in the Florida Keys

People flock to the most Southernmost point of the USA for its beautiful weather and laid-back atmosphere; generally, you can expect beautiful weather in Key West in the spring months. Many people choose to visit Key West in the winter and early spring, where temperatures hover at blissful 70 and 80 degrees.

In summer, you might run into some humidity and rain. Additionally, summer is hurricane season (June through November), so we recommend going in between March and May for optimal weather.

What to Bring On a Jet Ski Excursion

One awesome thing about jet skiing is that it is so simple—just hop on a WaveRunner and go in the open water! You don’t need much to have a great time, but we do have a few suggestions, especially if you are going on one of the longer six-hour tours.

For these, consider bringing a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a towel, and perhaps a cover-up since you’ll be in the sun all day. However, if you’re just renting a jet ski for an hour, you don’t need to bring anything except proof of your boating safety test and yourself!

However, one thing you will want to really make sure you bring is a waterproof case for your phone. You can take pictures of all the fun you are having without having to worry about losing or ruining your phone.

Jet ski mpg - how far can a jet ski go on one tank of gas?

How Far can a Jet Ski Go on One Tank of Gas? [MPG Chart]

“How far can a Jet Ski go on one tank of gas?” – This is a typical question for many beginners and for those who prefer other brands but would like to know the current Yamaha WaveRunner and Sea-Doo’s gas mileage.

In this post, we’ll focus on the current personal watercraft MPG (miles per gallon) numbers, and best practices for how you can reach the highest distances on the water. If you’d like to learn more about fuel consuption in general, don’t miss our deep research on this topic .

You may be wondering why these fuel consumption and MPG specs are becoming more important nowdays? It’s because personal watercrafts (PWC) have became bigger over the years , so they’re already a true alternative to small boats.

Because of this, their use has also changed radically. Nowdays, they are used more often for longer tours as well as PWC fishing trips .

And as we know, riding long distances always means a lot of fuel! Therefore, it’s essential to know how far you can go on a Jet Ski or Sea-Doo before it runs out of gas.

To help your research, we at JetDrift have collected some Sea-Doo, WaveRunner and Jet Ski MPG specs into one chart, as well as some useful definitions on this topic!

Basic Definitions – GPH vs. MPG

Before we go into the details, we need to clarify some basic terms for better understanding.

Gallon Per Hour (GPH)

When it comes to boats and jet skis, this measure is commonly used for measuring gas consumption. As jet skiing usually means “playing around” without going anywhere, it makes more sense to check the running hours on the water instead of distances.

Regarding running hours, the “GPH” on a watercraft means the number of gallons of gas you burn during one hour of riding.

The formula is:  GPH = gallons of gas burned/hours ridden.

Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

Even if the common measurement is GPH in the marine world, if you prefer touring or jet ski fishing, you’ll probably travel long distances at a steady speed. Thus, you may want to know your Sea-Doo or Jet Ski’s miles per gallon (MPG) specs. This number means the miles you can ride on a single gallon of gas. The formula is for MPG (Miles Per Gallon) = miles ridden/gallons of gas burned.

Best Cruise Speed

At different speeds, personal watercraft burn different amounts of gas. If you want to reach the widest span of miles on the water, you have to choose the “best cruise speed”.

This means the optimum speed for which your PWC is most fuel efficient so you can ride the maximum distance on one tank of gas. From model to model, this best cruise speed can vary, but in general, it means 25-30 mph in case of most PWCs.

Wide Open Throttle (WOT)

WOT (known as “full throttle”) simply means riding at full speed. At this speed, the PWC’s engine is usually the least efficient, so it means the worst miles per gallon on the water!

What Does a Jet Ski’s Range Depend on?

When it comes to hard numbers for current models, some facts need to be clarified at the beginning.

The rule of thumb is that higher performance always means higher fuel consumption.

But it’s good to know that there are many other factors you have to consider beyond performance specs, and the different testing conditions always provide different fuel consumption results on the same watercraft. Thus, it’s impossible to give the exact “GPH” number for each watercraft model.

The reason for this is that many different factors, especially weather conditions affect the PWC’s fuel range heavily These are typically the below:

  • Air temperature
  • Water temperature
  • Water conditions (choppy/calm)
  • Fresh water/Salt water
  • Curb weight of the PWC
  • Rider’s riding style and position
  • PWC’s performance
  • Rider’s weight and size
  • And many others

As you can see, there are many factors that can affect fuel consumption, but the main factors which you probably have to “face” on the water are the wind and the choppy water.

How far can a PWC go on one tank of gas?

How far can a PWC go on one tank of gas?

Jet Ski MPG vs. WaveRunner and Sea-Doo MPG Chart

While we can’t provide exact numbers we at JetDrift have collected some fuel consumption information.

These numbers are based on real tests, but you should know that based on the facts outlined above, your fuel consumption numbers can be different, even from ride to ride!

As you learned, gas consumption is less efficient at top speeds, but it’s also good to know how far you can go if you ride really hard. To help your buying decision, we’ve gathered some popular watercraft models’ MPG specs at WOT.

If you like, you can sort the rows by clicking on the header.  Are you curious about a specific model? Click on the model name to find additional specifications, pictures, videos, and comparisons!

Some additions to the chart: GPH at WOT  – Gallons Per Hour means the hourly fuel consumption at full throttle (WOT) MPG at WOT  – Miles Per Gallon – How far you can ride with one gallon of gas at full throttle (WOT) Hours at WOT  – Maximum number of hours you can ride with one tank of gas at full throttle (WOT) Miles at WOT  – Maximum number of miles you can ride with one tank of gas at full throttle (WOT)

So again, even though these hard numbers are based on real-world tests, please consider these numbers as “for information purposes only”!

How Much Gas Does a PWC Burn?

An average PWC can burn around 2-25 gallons of gas per hour while operating at full speed. Thus, your riding time could be as long as 4 hours, or even as low as 45 minutes depending on the model!

Beyond fuel consumption, obviously the gas tank size is the other factor that affects your riding time and fuel range heavily. The different watercraft’s gas tank sizes vary widely from 6 to up to 20 gallons, but the typical average size is around 15. Based on this:

An average PWC can run for 1–2 hours at full speed with a full tank of gas, while burning around 10-15 gallons of gas.

MPG at Best Cruise Speed

Let’s face it; nobody rides hours at full speed, as it’s pretty exhausting and it’s not the best for the engine too. Hence, most owners ride their watercraft at the best cruise speed (25-30 mph), especially on long tours. If the watercraft has a built-in speed control system, you can set this speed much easier on your craft.

So, if you would like to reach the best miles per gallon possible, you’re probably interested in the MPG numbers at the best cruising speeds.

Just for informational purposes.

As you can see, at best cruise speeds, even for the flagship models, are surprisingly fuel-efficient.

Generally speaking, the average PWC burns 3-4 gallons of gas per hour at best cruise speed, which means you can expect 4-7 hours of ride time with one full tank of gas.

How Far Can a Jet Ski Go on one Tank of Gas?

If you’re considering longer tours, you may want to know how far a jet ski can go on one tank of gas at best cruise speed.

How far can a jet ski go? In general, a jet ski can go somewhere from 75-150 miles on a tank of gas. Again, these numbers could vary widely depending on several factors like the jet ski’s performance, curb weight, fuel capacity, or the weather conditions.

Based on the chart above, maybe you’re thingking about simply dividing by two the “miles at best cruise” numbers: half a tank of gas for outward, the other half for the return distance. Never do that! As we’ve mentioned, the available miles per gallon can be different from ride to ride – even on the same day! And there could be several unforeseen situations during your rides.

Just imagine the next situation: you are going for a long trip when the water is calm and there is no wind. On the way there, you use around half of your gas. On the way back, you have to face upwind and choppy water. Will the other half of the gas in the tank be enough for the return trip? The answer is no !

Despite the same distance, your PWC will burn more fuel so you won’t be able to get back to the dock!

Beyond the changing water conditions, an error in the navigation can lead to extra miles on the water, which means extra fuel again. Another issue might be if one of your friend’s PWC needs a tow because of malfunction, and in this case, you have to count on higher fuel consumption too.

Safety Rules for PWC Fuel Range

Because of this above, always keep in mind the general rule for marine fuel calculation:

1/3 of the gas to go out 1/3 of the gas for the return 1/3 of the gas for emergencies and unforeseen situations

As safety is always the most important on the water, always keep in this rule in mind when it comes to calculating a watercraft’s MPG, As we’ve mentioned, it’s also hard to say what the full distances are for riding on one tank of gas, as it depend on many factors.

On the other hand, you won’t go long distances every day. Are you wondering what is the safe point where you have to go back to refuel your PWC if you’re just playing around near the shore?

As a rule of thumb, the majority of PWC riders use ¾ of the gas before they’re back to the shore . It’s always wise to not dry your tank completely, even if you’re close to the dock!

FAQ About Jet Ski Range

How long will a jet ski run on a tank of gas?

An average jet ski can run around 1-2 hours on a tank of gas, if you ride it at full speed. If you ride it at best cruise speed, you can expect to ride a jet ski for 4-7 hours before you need to refill. These numbers depend on many factors like the jet ski’s curb weight, performance, the size of the gas tank, and your riding style.

How many miles per gallon does a jet ski get?

An average jet ski gets 8-10 MPG at best cruise speed, while at full speed you can expect as low as 3-5 MPG depending on the jet ski’s performance, weight, or even the weather conditions. When you plan your trip, keep in mind the 1/3-1/3 fuel management rule!

What’s the range of a jet ski?

The average range of a jet ski is somewhere 75-150 miles on one tank of gas, but it depends on many factors. These are usually the jet ski’s curb weight, performance, the size of the gas tank, and the weather conditions. You can extend a jet ski’s range with extra fuel cans stored in a rack.

How Much Fuel Does a Jet Ski Use?

An average, a jet ski uses 3-4 gallons of gas per hour at best cruise (most fuel-efficient) speed. If you ride it hard, a jet ski can use 10-25 gallons of gas every single hour! Finally, a jet ski’s fuel consumption depends on many factors like the jet ski’s weight and performance, the weather conditions, and your riding style.

Do Jet Skis Use a Lot of Gas?

Jet skis use a lot of gas compared to other powersport vehicles, which results in much worse gas mileage. The reason for a jet ski’s high fuel consumption is the drag force of the water and the jet ski’s high-performance engines, which can reach 100-310 HP!

As you already know, the Sea-Doo, WaveRunner and Jet Ski’s MPG and GPH specs depend on many factors like performance, weather conditions or even gas tank sizes.

If you’re looking for a watercraft that offers the best fuel range, it’s highly recommended to choose a non-supercharged model. To ride the longest distances on the water on one tank of gas, you’ll always have to ride at the “best cruise speed” (cca, 25-30 mph).

And finally, always keep in mind the most important 1/3-1/3 safety rules in your fuel management while you’re planning your trip.

This was our short post about the PWC’s gas mileage, but you can learn more about PWC’s fuel consumption in this more detailed post!
