LINA_ FADO CAMÕES

An unmistakable expressive voice. Spacious music based on fado. This is “Fado Camões”, the new album by Portuguese singer and composer, LINA_ to be released worldwide on 19 January 2024 on the German label Galileo Music. “Fado Camoes” is a unique composition based on the classic poetry of Portugal’s most celebrated historical poet, Luís Vaz de Camões and follows on from the critically acclaimed album “Lina_Raül Refree” which celebrated the songs of Amália.

LINA_ is now in the company of British producer and musician Justin Adams, in what turns out to be a more personal album, based on the lyrics of Camões, with compositions from traditional fados and also written by LINA_. For this new project, LINA_ researched the poetry of Camões As LINA_ says in her own words, “I became curious, I wanted to know more, beyond ‘The Lusíadas’ or the ‘Sonetos’, and I discovered that Camões’ themes – change, childhood, love, falling out of love or the description of nature – could be adapted to fado and its metrics.”

Portuguese poet and essayist, Nuno Júdice, describes the duet of a perfect poem and perfect voice as follows, “Only a perfect voice can sing a perfect poem. The way they work together makes us hear, beyond time, instruments and words, the song of poetry itself. It is this miracle that we have in Lina’s voice and in the musical recreation that we find in these songs. More than fado, more than a Portuguese identity, it is the return to that Iberian spirit that characterised Portugal until the 17th century that we are now seeing reborn, with the unprejudiced purity of an interpretation in which portuguese and Galician come together in total harmony, as in the Galician-Portuguese origin of the two languages, which are now autonomous.”

After the wide recognition of “Lina_Raül Refree”, there are justified expectations for this new work. In 2020, “Lina_Raül Refree” was voted album of the year in the prestigious World Music Charts Europe and also won the first edition of the Carlos do Carmo Prize 2021. Now, with “Fado Camoes” a new chapter is now beginning alongside musician, composer and producer, Justin Adams, best known for productions featuring Robert Plant, Rachid Taha, Tinariwen, Jah Wooble or Souad Massi as well as collaborations with distinguished names such as Brian Eno or Sinead O’ Connor. In a nutshell: someone who has always been committed to the idea of mixing the traditional with contemporary elements. Growing up in Egypt, he promoted the encounter between the blues and the traditional dynamics of Maghreb music, and now these influences have been carried over into his work with fado singer, LINA_.

Not surprisingly the voice and the chords of the Portuguese guitar in fado cohabit a certain Africanised swing and atmosphere, as in “Quando veria vos”, or “In labirinto”, with the subtle presence of percussion between the voice, or on the loose side of “Desencontro”, while in “O que temo e o que desejo”, a duet with Asturian folkloric agitator Rodrigo Cuevas, it’s an insinuating Latin rhythm that meets the chords of fado.

It’s both a new and a familiar LINA_ that we glimpse in the new work. The stripped-down elegance of the recent past is still there, but now there’s a new spatiality, where the voice stands out amid the piano, guitar and almost silence, creating other scenarios, with pain, fairness and dignity going hand in hand, as in “Desamor” or “Senhora minha”. In “Amor é um fogo que se arde sem se ver” (Love is a fire that burns without being seen), LINA_’s voice is suspended in an atmosphere almost akin to silence, with only a few guitar chords and a digital mist as support, while in “Pois meus olhos não cansam de chorar” (For my eyes never tire of crying), concrete noises are integrated between piano notes, with Camões’ poetry revealing itself in scenes of melancholy but also celebration.

The musicians on “Fado Camoes” include Pedro Viana on Portuguese guitar, Englishman John Bagott, who has worked with Massive Attack, Portishead and Robert Plant, on piano and keys, and Ianina Khmelik on violin for two songs. “Raul and Justin have this curiosity about discovering links between the traditional and the contemporary, but this time the process was different,” says Lina. “In this case, I made the demos at home and idealised the moods of each song, then came up with the arrangements and production processes. It was hard work. That’s why it’s a disc signed only by me. Compared to the previous one, this one focuses more on language, writing, poetry and the structure of Camões’ poems that can be combined with fado. The other was more about the music, the sound, the textures.”

While “Fado Camoes” is a more personalised work, there are still an important range of collaborations on the album as with Portuguese singer, Amélia Muge who authored the music for the song “Senhora minha” and was also a pivotal voice in adapting the lyrics. “Nothing is done alone,” says LINA_. “Amélia was very special. My shoulder along the way. Her opinions were fundamental. I learnt a lot from her.”

The “Fado Camões” Tour starts in January 2024 and features LINA_ on vocals, synthesisers and percussion accompanied by Pedro Viana on Portuguese guitar, Ianina Khmelik on violin, acoustic piano and synthesisers, and John Baggott is also expected to appear on some dates. This doesn’t stop LINA_ from continuing to perform assiduously at the Fado Club in Lisbon, where she is a resident: “It’s vocal and emotional training”, as she puts it, to achieve results like those of “Fado Camões”, where her vocal expression and the music renew fado and the soul of those who listen to her.

Luís Vaz de Camões (c.?1524 or 1525 – 10 June 1580), sometimes rendered in English as Camoens is considered Portugal’s and the Portuguese language’s greatest poet. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Milton, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama but is best remembered for his epic work “Os Lusíadas” (The Lusiads). His collection of poetry “The Parnasum of Luís de Camões” was lost during his life. The influence of his masterpiece Os Lusíadas is so profound that portuguese is sometimes called the “language of Camões”. “Fado Camões” releases through Galileo Music on the 19th January, 2024.

You know it when you see it: here are some movies that got sex scenes right.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Movie Reviews

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

'Like it or not, we live in Oppenheimer's world,' says director Christopher Nolan

Movie Interviews

'like it or not, we live in oppenheimer's world,' says director christopher nolan.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.

New Wyler Aerial Tramway project progresses: Original tram won't be repaired

lina tour s.a

Plans to get the Wyler Aerial Tramway up and running could move forward soon, but the original tramway won't be repaired — instead, a new one will be built in a nearby location with improvements.

Many El Pasoans recall stepping inside the bright, amber-colored cable cars, enjoying the landscape of the Franklin Mountains, and ending with an incredible view of the towers atop Ranger Peak.

Local pride in the tramway led to public outcry in 2018 when Texas Parks and Wildlife closed it out of extreme caution and said it was no longer suited for public use.

Now, six years and a feasibility study later, there is some potential progress.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, working alongside the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority (CRRMA,) is getting closer to restoring the tramway to operation — an estimated $36 million project.

CRRMA is a political subdivision of the state of Texas created by El Paso City Council, according to its website . The agency has led several transportation projects in the city, including the El Paso Streetcar and aesthetic improvements along Interstate 10 and Airway Boulevard.

Raymond Telles, the agency's executive director, said CRRMA is heading the design and construction process.

"This project is real," Telles said. "It's not just an idea; it's actually happening."

The project consists of three phases, he said.

First, improvements to the tramway's base, then a new visitor center and finally, the tramway itself.

The designs and funding for phase one of the project are 100% complete, Telles said. The construction work could begin in just a matter of weeks. The first phase lays all the groundwork for the tramway and improves the road leading up to the tramway on McKinley Avenue.

The renderings shared showcase several new features: a loop road, more parking, shelters, a bus drop-off for school tours, and even a proposed amphitheater.

Now that funding is in place, that part of the project can move forward.

"We've been to the Legislature three times so far," Telles said. "To date, we've gotten just shy of $20 million from the Legislature."

That means $16 million from state funds are still needed to complete the tramway, and the cost could change once construction begins.

When it came to funding, state Rep. Lina Ortega was a big champion of tramway funding, Telles said.  However, Ortega will not be seeking re-election in 2024. Amid her departure, Telles remains confident Texas lawmakers will approve the rest of the funding needed to finish the project.

"The rest of the delegation has been supportive of this," he said. "I know they will continue pushing on this even though Rep. Ortega is leaving."

Ortega's chief of staff responded to an email asking for additional details, saying, "The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority will soon be releasing design plans for Phase 1 of the project in order to solicit a contractor for the project."

The solicitation for a contractor will most likely be released in the next few months, if not weeks, Telles said. Construction on phase one would be completed within 18 months after work begins, allowing them to move on to the visitor center and, eventually, the tramway.

Telles said the original Wyler Aerial Tramway would not be restored; instead, through a feasibility study, Texas Parks and Wildlife chose to go back to square one and build a tramway solely dedicated to the public.

"You have to remember, the original tram was intended to provide services to the towers," Telles said. "It was never intended for the public."

Built in 1959 , The Wyler Aerial Tramway, named for El Paso radio and television pioneer Karl O. Wyler, was designed to provide maintenance access for television transmission towers until donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1997.

The department re-opened it to the public in 2001 after renovations and operated the tram for nearly two decades. The tramway carried about 45,000 visitors each year.

Proposed designs by the CRRMA depict a new tramway line running nearly parallel to the old one. Plans also include a new base station. Instead of connecting to the transmission towers, the tram will end at a new observation deck, where visitors can witness spectacular views of two countries and three states.

"Ranger Peak is not super friendly for the public," Telles said. "It's an operating tower retrofitted for the public to hang out and take in the views — there's even signage of radiation."

The new tramway will also have larger cable cars, Telles said. The designs are not complete for the tramway itself, but Telles said he envisions cars large enough to carry 15 people at a time.

When asked about a possible completion date, Telles said it is tough to say, especially given the gap in legislative funding.

"We're still a couple years out, but we do have 100% of funds for phase one, so that is a huge step forward," he said.

With only a few different entities that build tramways in the entire world, the process is tricky, Telles said, but the payoff will be well worth it.

"It's one of the things that makes El Paso so special," Telles said. "So, opening a tramway and allowing kids that maybe can't quite pull off the full hike to the top of the mountain, this is going to open up those views to so many people."

What lies beneath? A rare tour of Melbourne's secret tunnels amid $24 million power upgrade

Two men walk through an underground tunnel in Melbourne.

As a legion of workers and residents rush about their days on the streets of Melbourne's CBD, Mal Harrison is wandering around a little further below — underneath the buildings and bitumen.

For the past two decades, his office has largely been the vast network of tunnels crisscrossing their way under the city, out of sight — and largely out of mind — of the people bustling above.

Clad in high-vis and safety gear, Mal is something of an expert on what lies underneath Melbourne.

He's a CitiPower project manager, recently tasked with helping deliver a major upgrade to the city's power network to help future-proof it against growing demand.

His subterranean workplace has also given him an enviable insight into a topic often pondered by curious Melburnians: what secrets lie hidden in the tunnels under the city?

Mysteries buried deep underground

CitiPower has long been the main energy distributor in the city, overseeing more than 2,300 kilometres of massive cables that snake their way under almost every street in the Hoddle Grid.

Many of these cables run through tunnels previously used for other purposes, such as the tunnel Mal is wandering through now, in the bowels of Southern Cross Station — previously used as a transport route between the station and the Mail Exchange.

To enter these tunnels, Mal strolls onto one of the train platforms and waits to be buzzed into a gated-off sloping runway in its centre.

After a walk through the station's underbelly, he arrives at a nondescript door, with a telling 'high-voltage' warning attached to it — the hallmark of many of CitiPower's mostly blank CBD infrastructure entrances.

Inside is a roughly 40-metre long hallway, lit by a series of fluorescent tubes and holding a bit more than a dozen large black cables to its walls.

The cables snake their way into the tunnel via an underground pit beside its entrance, travel along the walls where they take their leave into tubes embedded in the wall — and continue their journey elsewhere in the CBD.

Mal knows a bit about the history of these tunnels, including that this one was discovered during the most recent redevelopment of the station above.

Many others were discovered and repurposed by CitiPower, having been buried when the CBD was levelled in the 1800s.

"There's a lot of things buried deep that were buried in the 1850s, 1860s when they levelled it off and did the Hoddle Grid," he says.

Mal Harrison smiles, dressed in high-vis and a hardhat, in a dark tunnel lined by pipes.

'Urban legends' of the tunnels

"Every day's different," says the easygoing Mal, standing a couple of metres underneath the intersection of Spencer and Bourke streets, where he talks over the dull rumble of trams passing overhead.

"We find lots of stuff that's forgotten about or abandoned."

There was also a thick road surface discovered under Todd Road in Port Melbourne a few years back, which gave Mal's CitiPower crew an exciting opportunity to test their research skills.

"It was actually the old runway from World War II, where they built aircraft down at Fishermans Bend then rolled them out on the runway and flew them straight up to New Guinea," he says.

"Recently we also found an old cable car system in Lonsdale Street, including the culverts and a gear room that was just buried and abandoned in the city.

"There's all sorts of urban legends about the amount of tunnels in Melbourne, and I guess only time will tell."

Many of those legends include tales of underground transport routes and gold stockpiles. Asked if he's found any yet, Mal answers with a wry smile.

"No, not that. Or any bodies either."

Increasing power demand

CitiPower has opened up its "hidden" network of tunnels to the ABC amid a three-year, $24 million upgrade.

The electricity distributor's head of network planning, Andrew Dinning, says the need for the works is clear, with demand across the CBD expected to jump by at least 60 per cent over the next decade.

"Melbourne CBD is certainly growing," he says, standing inside a hulking substation hidden behind an unassuming facade in a Chinatown alleyway.

"Currently, the peak demand we see for that CBD network is around 500 megawatts. To set that in context, that's the same as one generation unit out at somewhere like Loy Yang power station, dedicated to supplying less than 3 square kilometres of CBD.

"We are forecasting that to increase up towards 700 megawatts in the next decade."

Census data shows the population in Melbourne's 3000 postcode almost tripled in the 15-year period from 2006 to 2021, from 14,538 to 43,084.

Andrew says the increasing number of people living and working in the city, along with a push for electrification and even a jump in the use of electric cars, was behind the increasing power demands.

The tunnel's walls are lined with red and black high-voltage power cables.

CitiPower's $24 million upgrade began in late April, starting with a tunnel on Little Queen Street built in the 1930s, and stretching in an almost 100-metre loop.

It gets hot and muggy quickly down there, and the walls are lined with an organised chaos of red and black high-voltage power cables, which disappear into holes in the wall and stretch their way out underneath the city.

As works begin, Mal says he'd rather be down here than sitting at a desk all day.

Large red padlocks are shown securing equipment in one of Melbourne's underground tunnels.

"Every day is a mystery on this job, finding stuff buried underground when we're doing excavation works. Because even though Melbourne's not that old a city, it's been redeveloped multiple times," Mal says.

"There are parts of Melbourne's underground that nobody knows exist, and we get to work in them every day, so it's not a bad office."
