'85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

  • Add to quote

I was just wondering about the Ski-Doo Safaris. I wanted to know if they are good motor, good gas mileage, good performance, and basically maintenance-free. I was wondering what the a good price would be for an '85-'94 safari. It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great. SWRules

Safaris can be had here around Barrie, Ontario for about $500. bucks or less. I'm talking about the 377's that are single carb, I'm not sure if the the 477's had twins or not but they are pretty much not worth anything around here unless you ice fish. Leaf springs and ziltch for suspension are there biggest downfall. I have a 85 safari right now that I have had since new and this sled had never let me down during the years I did ride it and I rode the snot out of it. It will go forever on a tank of gas, the only thing it cost me was a new starter rope and thats it. I do know the Citation SS had the same motor pretty much with the twin carbs and were a hoot in there time but these sleds are really outdated.

We sold our 93 377 Safari Deluxe this year. It was a twin carb and never let us down. It would run 80-85 flat out on a hard surface. It was a good beginner sled for my son who was 12 when we picked it up. It sold for 2000 with 3800 km on it and barely a scratch. It was always serviced and it showed. It rode good and handled OK on good trails. It wasn't much at off trail riding. It was very easy on gas. For a beginer sled or to tool around the farm it is great. For aggressive trail riding, no way. Mind you that big windshield kept you as warm as could be.

what year was yours BARRIEMACHZ?

My uncle has an 88 377 and the only thing he has had to change in almost 15 years now is a track. the sled still starts on first pull everytime. it is still fast enough to keep up with alot of the new sleds. he still loves it. it has about 25,000 k on it . he dosen't do any road riding or he dosen't ride in low snow conditions. guess that is why he has never changed Hi-Fax.

Fuzzy: Does it have 2 carbs? Electric Start, hand/thumb warmers? Speedo? Tach? How fast has he had it going? Ok thanks.

FREEZERBURNT: How was the Scout E on gas? What colour was it? Good performance??

Yellow but mine was painted black by previous owner :hallo1: Some Safaries are black, some are yellow and some are burgundy Its a 377 so it runs great for a 377 it will do 100kmph They are good on gas

One carb has a spedo no tach ,electric start or any other options like that.. track is a 118 or a 121 X 16 1/2 " don't know what spped he has had it at. it was a fast skidoo in it's day. the same cc cats and poos couldn't look at in speed or deep snow. he is thinking about getting a Gade next year so his son can use the 377. forgot to mention gas milage was excelent. before I got my sks I had a tundra and I would bunr two tanks of gas to his one. he gets about 15-17 MPG Click to expand...

How much would it cost for someone to put a second carb on say a '89 Safari 377?

Would it increase the power much? faster accelaration and top speed?

Got a 89 safari cheyenne 503 Long track, just did the first rebuild after 20000 km. A part from the susp which is a real POS, it is a great work sled ,not for trails though. Top speed was 95 kph.

Old Sled Sighting: 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe—on cusp of vintage

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski-Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

— October 12, 2017

A 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe, a dusty relic from back in the day.

Some will say that a dusty relic hardly qualifies as vintage snowmobile, but I found this 1994 Ski Doo Safari Deluxe sitting in a shed waiting to see the light of day. The owner said it was the “kid’s sled” but the kid hadn’t ridden it in a while. So what’s the story of Ski-Doo Safari?

Here’s what one forum contributor had to say about the Safari: “So far it's been a real nice first sled! It's pretty quick, but I wish it was a little faster. She tops out at around 85-90 km/h.”

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

Talking about sleds of this era, American Snowmobiler stated back in 1995, “Ski-Doo recognizes this. That is why you see the Bombardier line taking on a very familiar stance. The 1995 models are all based on the F-2000 chassis, DSA front suspensions, C-7 type rear suspension, and proven Rotax engines from one to three cylinders. This year, Ski-Doo has "out-Polarised" Polaris when it comes to efficiency and standardization in its model mix. Oh, yeah. The Safari replacements, now simply Touring models, combine the best of the best - the F-2000 chassis and rock-steady Rotax fan-cooled engines. And with standardization comes an ability to offer aggressive pricing, which is good news for snowmobile consumers. Doesn't this all sound familiar? Isn't that what Polaris has been doing with its Indy? And isn't it what Yamaha would do with the Max series if it was focused?”

Surpassing and overshadowing the Ski-Doo Safari line up was the milestone introduction of the Summit line, because on September 14, 1993 the two millionth Ski-Doo snowmobile was manufactured in Valcourt, Québec. Bombardier creates a new segment in the snowmobiling market with the Summit model, especially designed for powder snow and mountain terrain.

Type 503 rotax motor information

  • Add to quote

I just purchased a Type 503 rotax motor the problem i'm having is finding out exactly what snowmobile it came out of the person who had it before me had it on a go-kart.. i have the serial # 3192193 how can i tell what type of ignition it has? it also has two ports that apear to go into the crank case my 399cc rotax only has one? is there anything else i can look for to determine what snowmobile this engine came out of? also after i find out what snowmobile it came out of where would the best place to look for documentation on that particular sled? thanks

ski doo safari rotax

Well phone a Ski-Doo dealer and see if it did come from a sled. Some of those are built for Ultra Lites and are different. If it is for a sled then you have about 20years or so of chassis' to figure out which it came from. They used them right up until recently.

it is probaly form a everest if is an older engine.is it fan cooled. or a safari...do You have a picture of it.

It's fan cooled. All 503's were. Everest and Blizzards right up to the MXZ 500 fan and Summit 500 fans use that motor. Touring's, skandics, you name it, it's been around.

ski doo safari rotax

Did the Safari's ever see a motor over a 388, I'm not sure?

yes i belive the safaris had a 503,and a 377 same as a citation...i thought there was a 503 liquid motor too but i guess i'm wrong

i think the old liquid was the 444 my everest has the 503 motor, its points and condenser ignition with twin ignition coils. two ports to crankcase, one should be a pressurized hose for fuel pump, ill check the other when i go to the garage and tell you about it in a bit. i've got a manual for the everest 503 that i could send you some info if you need it the new 503 are different, they got detuned in the mid 80's and then retuned in the early 90's i think

Moto-ski Grand Prix specials have 503 f/c and blizzards also have 503 f/c their cc is actually 496.7, ive had lots of blizzards and gps' in my time so i kno, also 1980-82 everest 500s,

there are a bunch of 503 parts on ebay right now, if you search ebay stores for rotax 503 you should get quite a few things

+ 5500 Blizzard -Stratos -Escapade David's Vintage Snowmobile Page has brochures.

Here is some info on it, its about the aircraft engine but theyre the same except for exhaust.

oops forgot the link http://www.kodiakbs.com/2intro.htm

i have a 503 blizard its a 79' and i had to put points in it when i got it. cant remember if it is a 5500 or a 7500? i still have to put the engine back into it after i put a new pto bearing and flywheel side bearing in it.

New Motor.......won't start?? (377 Rotax)

  • Add to quote

I posted this topic back in September but have now updated it: September 8, 2008 I just picked up an '88 Ski-Doo Safari 377. It took quite a while getting it started as it kept fouling the plugs. I had another set uf plugs (used) that I cleaned and put in. Same problem. After a few cranks the plugs foul. I swapped fuel pumps from my '85 and took the carb apart and cleaned it. The carb was very cruddy. Once I cleaned the carb and swapped the fuel pumps I got it started (barely). Once it started it was a little boggy. It was also loaded up with fuel. Once I ran it for about 10 minutes I shut it off. It would not re-start. It floods or fouls while attempting to start it. Any idea where I should be looking for a possible cause? NEW plugs? Carb overhaul? The odometer reads 1700 miles. Update: October 12, 2008 After running a compression test and finding 90 PSI on both cylinders, I pulled the head and found one .010 oversized piston on the PTO side and the stock piston on the MAG side. I pulled the engine, had both cylinders bored/honed .020 oversize, installed new pistons/rings, gasket set, oil seals and dropped the motor back into the sled. It attempted to start.......ONCE. Since I was unsure of the timing I set the stator in the center position. I have advanced it, retarded it and it still does not want to start. It has spark and fuel but will not start. If it is left for several hours and you attempt to start it.....it acts like it will want to start.....again......ONCE. Anyone have any ideas on where to look? I can't set the timing until it's running if the timing is the problem. I have moved the stator to several different positions with no luck. 1. I have swapped carbs from my '85 safari 377 and have the same problem. This carb works perfect. 2. fuel tank was pulled and cleaned, new filter installed, new lines, new fuel pump. 3. pistons are NOT backwards. you can clearly see the arrow through the plug hole. I have another running 377 in my other safari that runs great. I tried the carb, fuel pump from this so I don't see it being a fuel problem. And just in case you are reading this Trevor (which I know you are) I have not found anything in the manuals that I am doing any different (timing). Thank you, Jim Roberts [email protected]

Have you tried starter fluid? Did you check the external coils? A bad external coil can still produce a spark, mine did.

ski doo safari rotax

Take the coils off your good engine and swap them. Louis

Do NOT use starting fluid especially on a new motor. mix down each cylinder and give it a yank if your geyying enough spark it'll fire.

ski doo safari rotax

If you have fuel and spark..have you checked for compression? Is it just flooded? Is there excess fuel sitting in the pipe? Try pulling the pipe from the Y and see if it starts. It may be flooded so bad that it's not getting enough fresh air to clean it's lungs. Try puilling the plugs and pull the recoil about 50 times with the fuel shutoff and pipe off. Can also try to hold a stick lighter over the plug holes to clear it out. Also try swapping Coils and CDI from the sled in question on the other Safari and see if that sled will start ( Don't try the known good parts on the sled in question you may end up with 2 sets of bad parts) If the sled does start you have eliminated the Coil and CDI as the issue. If not.. one may be bad.

Ive heard so many bad things about starting fluid. Honestly, i think its fine in moderation. My 377 is still running very strong and 5 or so years ago my dad used starting fluid everytime to start the sled.

ski doo safari rotax

I've heard it takes 10'000 miles off the life of a diesel every time you use it (washes the oil off the cylinder walls) and I know of one 6.9 GM that got junked because it wouldn't start after a winter of daily use . A mechanic buddy of mine towed it to his shop and dumped oil down the cylinders to relube it and drove it for a couple of years ! Tom

Try another CDI box from another sled.

I started it last night. Don't you hate it when the problem is just too obvious?? It WAS flooded. I held the throttle open to allow more air into the motor and pulled it over a dozen times. It tried starting with every pull until it finally started. I shut it down and called it a night. Now I will start it, run the excess fuel out and set the timing (in the daylight). I am new to this snowmobile game but I thought back when I used to build small block chevys and the carburetor (remember those things?) would flood the motor. JUst open the throttle wide open and crank it over allowing more air into the engine. Thank you for your input on this problem, Jim

Great News....Was happy to hear it was something simple. Check it again to see if the sled is continuing to flood out. You may have stuck float in the carb which will Congratulations on passing your first official Hazing test. You are now a official member of the Snowmobile world. I don't belive you can truly appreciate the snowmobile until you're completely out of breath from pulling the recoil about 50 or so times.

It does still seem to be flooded. It starts but starts hard. I ran it up to 6000 rpm and checked the timing and it's on the money. It runs very rich and won't idle. It stalls when you let off the throttle. I am going to assume it has not ran all the excess fuel out yet? The same thing happened last year on my 85 safari. I just took it out and ran the heck out of it. It cleared out pretty quick. Just wondering if this is the problem. Jim

Well since you did the rebuild on the top end and seems to have been succesful. Go out and by a rebuild kit for the carb. This would be the first place to start. You can always ask your dealer on the stock settings for the sled.

It won't run worth a crap until it gets colder out as your carb should be set for winter temps. But i would also check the carb one more time so your not farting around come first snow..

I agree, wait till it gets pretty cold to start messing with the carb adjustments. My citation doesnt like to run well in temps above 70 degrees. I have to hold the throttle wide open to start it in warm temps. Anything above 70 and it just idles, you hit the throttle and it doesnt do anything.

ski doo safari rotax

I think the motor should run just fine in the summer or winter. Mine fire right up and run fine when I play with them in the summer. Temperature does not play as critical a role in jetting like altitude or humidity would. My .02-

I read your post and it brought back recent memories of last year when I had THE EXACT ISSUE...I pulled the rope so much I broke it...I hurt my gall bladder pulling on it so much...I was sore for two weeks. I got upset...I had bored, honed, rebuilt, cleaned, re-cleaned....MAN....I spent a solid 7 days trying to figure it out. I cussed the snowmobile gods, pulled the motor and flipped it over and about a quart of clean gas ran all over the place. Meanwhile it started to rain outside and melt the nice 8 inches of snow that I waited a year for. I drained it and let is sit for an evening...put it back in and it did the same thing.... I sat and stared at it for a while and drank 10 Pabst blue ribbons, my goofy brother in law was there so I couldn't break down and cry like I wanted to.....and he said....Wow thats weird? ( he is mechanically retarded...doesn't own a screwdriver) he said...that fuel hose has air bubbles flowing through it watch....I watched thinking he had drank too many of MY beers and then I saw it ...bubble,bubble flowing backwards through the line toward the fuel tank from the carb.....it was seeping gas.....gas was filling the mikuni bowl and running into the engine...I pulled that carb, for about the 6th time ( by then I was getting really good at disconnecting and pulling stuff apart) and bent the tang slightly...( I now have a nifty little pressure tester) I put it back on...pulled the exhaust off...it started, smoked up the garage so bad my smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detctor went off in the living room 100 feet away...and it hasn't quit running yet...Rotax 503...gosh I love that sled, gall bladder still hurts though.

COMMENTS

  1. Five historic Rotax snowmobile engines

The "600" was the first engine designed expressly for use in Bombardier's Ski-Doo, not just another industrial engine applied to the Ski-Doo. The snowmobile industry was growing by leaps and bounds and racing was taking off. Helmut Roteh, who was in charge of Rotax R & D, designed the 600.

  2. EXTREMELY rare Rotax Bombardier 447 engine. Is it

Very rare engine for sale or trade. I have an EXTREMELY rare Rotax Bombardier 447 engine. I have the only complete one for snowmobiles anywhere on the internet. Parting one together will cost 1500USD minimally and it still wont be complete. Hell, the carb on it alone is 300USD. If i can get a grand for it, ill be a happy camper.

  3. '85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great.
