Exploring the best hidden gems in Europe often means slow-rumbling scenic bus journeys through less-traversed valleys, epic hikes to almost-forgotten hamlets, or heart-thumping sailings to windswept isolated isles.

Some may call that inconvenient. I call it winning.

If you’re happiest pointing to a random place on a map called Počitelj – as I am often inclined – and dutifully heading there on a whim, then this list, my friends, is for you.

Of course, going off the beaten path in Europe will mean something different for everyone. Thus, I’ve aimed to include a decent balance between remote isles , secluded villages, under-the-radar sustainable city breaks , and lesser-visited lofty peaks.

Whether you’re looking for unique places to visit in Europe or just a city break that isn’t one of the usual suspects, I hope you’ll find a favourite amongst my picks of the best places to visit in Europe this year.

In no particular order, enjoy my 23 best Europe hidden gems for 2023 – let the new year of adventures commence!

Views over an Ottoman village in Bosnia Herzegovina

In this article...

1. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Remotest Corners

One of the best hidden gems in Europe for adventure activities, Ottoman architecture and remote communities

Can I get away with calling a whole county a hidden gem? Maybe not. Yet, for the most part, Bosnia and Herzegovina remains a relatively off-the-beaten-path – and affordable – destination in Europe.

After two deep dive visits, I’m convinced the country’s greatest asset is the mesmerising near-photoshopped lakes, the lush countryside, and the lofty hiking trails.

While Mostar is rightly famed for its Ottoman architecture and history-defining bridge, ‘doing’ B&H as a day trip from Dubrovnik will never give the nation the justice it deserves.

Some of my favourite lesser-visited spots ripe for adventure activities include the Neretva River and Zavala. Konjic is the place to go for relaxing river rafting – the water is so clear it might as well be Evian. Kravica Waterfall is another epic water-heavy spot, and the cascades are beyond photogenic.

In Zavala – population two – you can spend the night sleeping in a converted railway station. The abandoned tracks have now been reimagined as an epic cycling adventure. Heaven-reaching Bjelašnica mountain is also rich in trails, leading you to Lukomir , the most isolated hamlet in the country. Here, 1,495 meters above sea level, a community of shepherds, ancient tombstones, and timelessness await.

But the real magic for me in Bosnia and Herzegovina is those little moments. Whether it’s being serenaded by guitar as a chatty host pours homemade wine in Zavala, or sipping a sand-boiled Bosnian coffee overlooking the minarets of Ottoman Počitelj, it’s those journey-defining memories that capture the essence of ‘hidden Europe’ at its best.

Crowd-free Mostar after sunset

Plan your trip: Don’t rush; 7-14 days allows for a deeper dive into these unique places. Late spring through autumn is most suited for outdoor adventures, while winter brings snow and skiing to the peaks. Off-road jeep tours to the mountains can be good for reaching the remote villages, and Highlander Adventures offer a 5-day hiking tour on the Via Dinarica.

Top tip: If you’re struggling to find Sarajevo flights , check Tuzla or Dubrovnik as an alternative.

View of the Graz River Mur

2. Graz, Austria

One of the most underrated European cities for a sustainable city break, served with a first-class culinary scene and architectural treasures

Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, is still something of a hidden gem on Europe’s city-break scene. Partly due to the lack of direct flight connections, but also because it doesn’t have the legendary status that Salzburg, Vienna or even the Austrian Alps commandeer. Don’t let that deter you; it’s very much the green city’s appeal.

Not only is Graz an extremely sustainable city break (especially if you arrive flight-free), but its setting, surrounded by the Styrian countryside, promises plenty of farm-to-fork dining. Prepare to reconsider all your ideas about Austrian cuisine, as this city takes fresh produce, creative recipes, and vegetarian plates to another level.

Graz's Clock Tower

Unsurprisingly for a city which has earned two UNESCO designations, there are plenty of things to do in Graz .

On the one hand, Graz’s historic World Heritage-listed core delivers everything you’d expect from a grand European city. There are Italian-esque courtyards aplenty, medieval cobbled streets, the remains of a hilltop fortress, frescoed facades, grand avenues, and church spires climbing to the heavens.

Then you have the other side, where Graz’s status as a ‘City of Design’ shines through. A floating artificial island doubles as a small gallery, a somewhat out-of-place modern art museum presents like a tentacled alien, and up-and-coming neighbourhoods capture the best of off the beaten path Europe.

Graz is a city best savoured slowly; indeed one of my favourite unusual European destinations for a city-cum-countryside getaway.

Graz Old Town

Plan your trip: Stay at least two nights to soak up the city’s atmosphere; Graz is one of those places where it is just a pleasure to be and explore slowly. Summer and autumn are my suggestions.

Top tip: Trains are the best way to arrive to this Europe hidden gem, either from Vienna (2:30 hours) or Salzburg (4 hours). FlixBus also has long-distance connections.

Pico, a Europe hidden gem

3. Pico Island, The Azores, Portugal

One of the best places to visit in Europe for lofty hikes, lava tunnel exploration, Atlantic swell and inspiring wines

With a flurry of new flight routes launching in 2023 – from as far afield as Boston and NYC – the Azores are enjoying a moment in the spotlight. While most attention is focused on São Miguel, the largest isle of the nine-strong archipelago, for a more off-the-beaten-path experience venture to Pico.

Literally called ‘peak’, it should be no surprise Portugal’s highest mountain crowns this verdant-cerulean speck in the Atlantic Ocean.

Towering up to the heavens – and often piercing the clouds – Mount Pico’s summit rewards with far-reaching vistas from 2,351 metres. New restrictions have come into force in 2023 to protect the fragile landscape, and a guide is highly recommended, especially on a night hike .

Inside a Lava Tube in the Azores

Adventures also continue far below the surface at Gruta das Torres. Here, you can venture inside the dark depths of the largest lava tube in Portugal and explore more of this unique island .

Back at ground zero, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pico’s vineyards provides a delicious curiosity. Weathered vines rise from the black volcanic rock, telling the back-breaking story of creating viniculture in such an adverse setting.

Then, out in the deep blue, marine-biologist-led boat tours will help you spot dolphins and whales in the wild. This hidden gem of Europe isn’t so easy to visit, but it certainly delivers the goods.

Crater lakes in the azores

Plan your trip: If you don’t want to DIY-it, Intrepid Travel offers this fast-paced 7-day tour of the Azores , including Pico. Sao Miguel is the primary international airport of the archipelago. Allow at least a week to hop the central three island group of Pico, Faial and São Jorge. Winter can be windy and wet – you’re isolated in the middle of the Atlantic.

Top tip: If you want to travel across the majority of the archipelago by ferry, the long-distance route only runs in summer.

Incredible Roman mosaics in Sicily shouldn't be a hidden gem

4. Villa Romana del Casale, Italy

One of the the best hidden gems in Europe for Roman mosaics on the grandest scale

At Villa Romana del Casale, you’ll find what UNESCO call “the finest mosaics in situ anywhere in the Roman world”.

While it might seem that such treasures should be in and around Rome , this well-preserved example is actually in the sun-kissed southern island of Sicily.

As you slowly stroll through the vast villa – constructed in the 4th century AD – you’ll have a constant stream of story-depicting tiles to admire which decorate every inch of floor below the raised walkways. It’s an absolutely mind-blowing site, deserving of its UNESCO recognition, and delivers a cultural side to everything else that Sicily , one of the best islands to visit , offers.

If you aren’t that far south but still want mosaic marvels, head to Palestrina, a 70-minute bus ride from Rome. Here, inside the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Palestrina , you can see the Hellenistic Nile Mosaic, which pre-dates christ. It’s a remarkable and detailed artwork depicting mythical scenes of Egypt.

Plan your trip: Most of the site is covered, so good year-round. Allow at least two hours for a visit. Day tours from Palermo, which combine Villa Romana del Casale and the Valley of the Temples, can be worth booking if you’re short on time.

Top tip: On arrival at Piazza Armerina, shared taxis usually wait if you don’t want to walk. The cost is around €5pp.

Vipava Valley Slovenia

5. Vipava Valley, Slovenia

Perfect for a mountain-backed eco-escape cycling between vineyards and private cellars

Slovenia’s finally getting the attention it deserves. The green city of Ljubljana is becoming a popular weekend break, and the mystical magic of Lake Bled is now a firm traveller favourite.

However, as I see from my Slovenian friends on Facebook, their beloved capital is starting to suffer over-tourism and the related property rent issues that always follow.

Thankfully, much of this lush country remains blissfully off the beaten path, and Vipava Valley is undoubtedly one of Europe’s best hidden gems for now.

Vipava Valley, a Europe hidden gem in Slovenia

Slow travel and sustainability aren’t buzzwords in Slovenia; they are a way of life, and nowhere is this truer than in Vipava Valley. A gorgeous canvas of greenery, hills and vineyards, you could easily mistake this for a Tuscan painting at first glance.

The joy of visiting Vipava is found while cycling or hiking between the hamlets, heading into the art-inspiring mountains, Paragliding powered by the valley’s beloved wind – affectionately nicknamed The Burja – or sampling every zero-kilometre food morsel that is put in front of you.

Then, there are the home-grown wines. With an unknown number of wine cellars here – everyone seems to have one under their house – even the most inauspicious homes often double up as a restaurant. Sipping these signature grapes, such as the indigenous Zelen, while hearing stories of times gone by in candle-lit cellars, is a travel memory you’ll treasure.

Vipava Valley Slovenia

Plan your trip: Ideal for a long weekend or even one week – this underrated destination in Europe is a slow travel destination. Visit from spring through autumn. Trieste, in Italy, is a good arriving point, given Sloevenia’s limited flights.

Top tip: If you want to side trip from Ljubljana without a designated driver, there are day wine tours available. Or, get in touch with my friend Jani at Wajdusna for an active e-bike trip between the vines.

Leon Cathedral's stained glass

6. León, Spain

One of the best hidden gems in Europe for architecture-admirers seeking a laid-back city break

Spain is home to many of Europe’s hidden gems , even though they are often significant and famed cities. There are just frankly too many destinations in the country to visit, which makes even places like León something of an unusual Europe destination for many travellers.

But it shouldn’t be. This city has the lot.

There’s a great food scene, with an abundance of mouthwatering free-tapas bars packing out the pedestrianised centre. The nightlife is excellent while staying reasonably laid-back, and the city is compact, with the pumping bar quarter a labyrinth of delicious treats and late-night laughter.

Casa Botines from behind

León’s main draw, however, is its architecture – and being home to one of Gaudí’s designs has ensured it’s not an off the beaten path European destination for fans of the flamboyant architect. Casa Botines, one of his only works outside Catalonia, brings a Modernist contrast to the city’s otherwise aged-architectural treasures.

From marvelling at the impeccable 13th-century stained-glass windows in the cathedral – some of the best in Europe – to taking in the Romanesque frescoes of the basilica, grandeur and superb artistry are on full display here.

León might not be the most secret spot in Europe, but it steps up to the challenge of diverting people from the likes of Madrid with glee.

Inside the cloister

Read more: León in a weekend

Plan your trip: León’s architecture makes it one of the best cities in Spain at any time of the year, although winters can be chilly. Using high-speed rail, the journey from Madrid takes around 2 hours by train.

Top tip: Book a night in the Hotel Real Colegiata San Isidoro for an incredible heritage stay.

The Kazbegi region of Georgia

7. The Georgian Caucasus Mountains

One of the best Europe hidden gems for an affordable mountain retreat of epic hikes

Spanning from Georgia to Azerbaijan and connecting two continents, the Georgian Caucasus Mountains offer incredible hiking trails in the warmer months, while winter brings snowy escapades.

Georgia, especially the capital city of Tbilisi, has been gaining popularity in the digital nomad community for years, thanks to the one-year visa and low nomad tax rates. Still, you’ll find the real community magic of the nation amongst the highest peaks.

Dormant Mount Kazbek, climbing to an elevation of 5,055 metres, is a real sight to behold. The surrounding area around Stepantsminda – a starting-point town – is one of the most popular year-round destinations thanks to its position on the principal Georgia to Russia highway keeping this range (usually) accessible.

Monasteries sit above the clouds, friendly dogs will volunteer to be your trekking ‘guides’, and hospitable homestays will start as a place to crash, before quickly becoming a home with new Chacha (home-brewed brandy) plying friends. The food, from twisted-dough Khinkali dumplings to the cheese-stuffed Khachapuri bread, is the pièce de résistance.

Plan your trip: Outstanding year-round, the snowy peaks can make road access in winter an occasional challenge. Kutaisi airport usually provides more affordable flight connections than Tbilisi. Either come for a couple of days or a more extended hiking escape.

Top tip: Public buses are cheap and relatively frequent from Tbilisi, while group day tours provide an easy, and still affordable, option.

Canals in The Hague

8. The Hague, The Netherlands

One of the best places to visit in Europe for politics and history, beach bars and brews, and plenty of learning

The Hague is one of my favourite underrated European city breaks, and it’s fair to say I was shocked by how cool it is.

For many, Amsterdam is the one-stop go-to in The Netherlands, leaving much of the nation’s other destinations as Europe hidden gem. While that might not be the case here – the city’s world-famous for its international courts – it makes for a great weekend without the often unbearable crowds of the capital.

I was impressed with the fantastic food and bar scene, especially for vegetarians . Then there are the in-depth and fascinating museums such as the refugee-focused Humanity House (currently closed) and the Mauritshuis, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. Along the golden sand beach, there are plenty of chic beach clubs, and of course, the critical work the city does internationally for Peace and Justice .

It might not have as many canals or the coffee shops of Amsterdam, but it makes up for it with the laid-back vibes, friendly locals, and culture to gorge on. Seriously, if you are looking for a new European city break in 2023, you can’t go wrong with The Hague.

The Hague Parliament Building

Plan your trip: The Hague makes a decent year-round visit. The beaches are best in summer, and September is a great time to visit. It’s also a more laid-back base to Amsterdam for day trips.

Top tip: The Peace Palace only opens for general public tours a few days of the year. If you want to visit, plan dates around the Peace and Justice weekend .

BeratAlbaniaWhiteCity

9. Berat, Albania

One of the best Europe hidden gems for an enchanting village escape after the beaches

Berat – Albania’s cutest village – is often called the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’. On arrival, it’s obvious why, as you gawk at the whitewashed Ottoman houses hugging the side of the fortress-crowned hill.

Atop it all is Berat Castle, with its more than 2500 years of history. Much of what you see today dates from the 13th century, though Byzantine churches are still visible. We arrived here intending to spend one night in the castle walls, but quickly extended our stay to enjoy two days in Berat .

Albania, in general, has recently gone from a lesser-visited hidden gem in Europe, to an in-the-know paradisiacal beach escape. Still, the country’s interior has plenty more to offer, including Gjirokaster, Lake Komani and Bogovë Nature Park – especially the secluded waterfall.

If you don’t have The Balkans on your radar, take a virtual tour of Muslim Europe in the delightful book Minarets in the Mountains . Written by my fellow LP-writer Tharik Hussain, it provides a look at the Muslim history of Europe that’s often not spoken about.

Read more: Things to do in Albania

Plan your trip: Many people visit Berat as a stop between Tirana and Ksamil’s beaches. But do yourself a favour and stay at least one night – the wide windows under the orange hue make for a magnificent evening setting.

Top tip: Stay in the castle walls. I adored Guesthouse Kris , and the hosts were super friendly – we’re still in touch years later.

The Cinema of Nature

10. The Asitz Mountain, Austria

One of the most unique places to visit in Europe for a sustainable summer hike of culture, art and escapism

One of my most recent Europe hidden gem finds is the region of Saalfelden Leogang , set in the Austrian Alps. While many would think of this corner of the world as the ideal winter ski destination, I visited at the start of summer and boy, am I glad I did.

The two towns that make up this region are adorable. Saalfelden is more urban, Leogang is more rural, and the entire valley is absolutely stunning. However, the main reason to venture to this part of Austria is for an unforgettable mountain experience atop the lofty peaks of the Asitz Mountain .

Reaching 655 metres at its highest, this beautiful winter ski destination is also renowned for exhilarating and intense mountain biking routes. Locally known as ‘the mountain of senses’, there is much more to this part of the jagged range than just extreme sports.

Austria's hidden gems of Europe

Something of a secret European destination still, culture lovers will be well rewarded after riding the gondola to the top. Summer sees art and sculpture trails through the forest for the eyes, water features for paddling, herb gardens for the senses, a ‘nature cinema’, and most magically, outdoor concerts performed against an incredible mountain lake backdrop.

You’ll also find cultured wooden huts – TONspurs – on the mountain. Inside, you can lay back and enjoy the panorama while listening to previous concerts playing through the headrest. Honestly, it’s one of my new favourite European destinations.

european places to visit 2023

Plan your trip: A long weekend or even longer – this is a slow travel destination. In summer, it’s all about hikes and the arts, while the winter snow brings skiing and snowboarding. Train travel from the UK is possible by overnighting and then taking the Alpine Express. The nearest airports are Innsbruck and Salzburg.

Top tip: Stay at the Stockinggut Leogang. It’s a great spot with grand views. See my review here .

Sunset on the 9km golden beach in Porto Santo

11. Porto Santo Island, Portugal

One of the hidden gems in Europe for lazy beach days and winter sun

Madeira, one of my favourite islands, is another Portuguese destination enjoying its moment in the spotlight. But the largest isle, renowned for its epic hikes and volcanic coastline, isn’t the only option in the archipelago.

A three-hour ferry away is Porto Santo, the ‘baby-sister’ if you will. Here, it’s a whole other vibe and picture, and the country’s newest biosphere reserve remains one the best off the beaten path Europe beach escapes.

Lauding a nine-kilometre stretch of golden sands – hard to find on the main island where darker shores prevail– this is a perfect place to bury yourself in a book and top-up the tan. For some soft adventure, the rolling hills backing the island make for easy hiking routes.

With a mixture of accommodation options, ranging from upscale resorts to down-to-earth home rentals, Porto Santo is all about easy days relaxing, rounded off with fresh-seafood and spectacular sunsets. Honestly, it’s more of a beach with an island than an island with a beach.

Beautiful Madeira

Read more: Madeira in photos

Plan your trip: You could enjoy a beach week or make it a short visit combined with Madeira. The climate is fairly decent year-round. In winter, I basically had the whole beach to myself – though it wasn’t quite tanning weather.

Top tip: It’s often easier and cheaper to fly to Madeira and take the ferry than into Porto Santo directly. In summer, a ferry service operates from mainland Portugal to Madeira for a flight-free choice.

Castelmezzano, one of the prettiest hidden gems in Europe

12. Castelmezzano, Italy

One of the most unique places to visit in Europe for that dream mountain village getaway

Perched against the backdrop of the Dolomiti Lucane, Castelmezzano is one of Italy’s most beautiful small villages.

We stumbled upon it after a last-minute detour decision during a southern Italy road trip , and my heart leapt the second the cluster of ochre roofs came into view. Set in the lesser-visited European region of Basilicata, head here for a countryside bolthole.

On the opposite mountain, you’ll find Castelmezzano’s ‘twin’ – Pietrapertosa. Linking them both is The Angel’s Flight – a high-speed zip wire that whisks you between these two beguiling peak-snuggled villages.

While the town is mesmerising – especially when viewed from a distance to admire its unique location – the surrounding area is full of epic hikes, forests and a national park. The age-old charm of an overnight stay in Castelmezzaono’s 10th century settlement makes it a firm Europe hidden gem favourite.

Camogli

Read more: Italy’s hidden gems

Plan your trip: This is a real ‘get away from it’ kind of village. You can either stay a while and become part of the furniture or call in on a road trip around southern Italy. The zip-line usually shutters from November until May.

Top tip: Don’t miss the city of Matera, a magical land of caves, ancient underground living, and storied streets.

Durham Castle as seen from the riverside

13. Durham, England

One of the best places to visit in Europe for the quintessential British experience

If you are looking for a slice of English city-life with countryside charm, head to Durham.

Most famed for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle and cathedral – the oldest being from the 9th century – you’ll want to allow at least a half-day to tour both. There’s also a large university here, meaning plenty of good bars and decent restaurants – including ample vegetarian options.

Outside the city, you can ramble along the Durham Heritage Coast, a European hidden gem for its sea glass-strewn beach . Raby Castle – a privately owned medieval gem which has starred in Downton Abbey – can also be toured.

Lastly, be sure to visit Beamish Museum , a living museum. I spent a full day here solo; it was that impressive! With an interactive museum-meets-theme-park vibe, you’ll discover the history of England from the 1800s onwards.

From fully staffed old-school sweet shops and dress-up photography studios to vintage trams and buses driving around, the experience is very much ‘lived history’ history. There are even actors in the ‘homes’ and ‘schools’.

A tram at beamish museum in Durham

Read more: Durham travel guide

Plan your trip: I’d suggest at least three days or a packed weekend. Then you can experience the city, a couple of castles and the fantastic Beamish Museum. As with everywhere in the UK, it’s best in the warmer and dryer months.

Top tip: Always book your train tickets in advance in the UK, it will save you a lot of money. Buses in the region are surprisingly decent, making sights easy to explore.

Sunrise Erfurt Thuringia

14. Erfurt and Thuringia, Germany

One of the most undiscovered cities in Europe for quaint corners, classical culture, library lovers and adapted accessibility

Historic, charming and relatively compact, Erfurt is the capital of the Germany’s lesser-visited State of Thuringia.

The city dates back to around 700 AD and slowly became an important trading destination in the Middle Ages. Thanks to the Old Town surviving WWII, you can still experience it very much as it once was.

Home to Germany’s oldest university, it’s a classic city with a youthful vibe. In the summer months when I visited, the beer gardens were overflowing, walks along the river were divine, and an energy floated through the warm evening air that I hadn’t felt in other German cities.

The main attractions are the hulking Gothic cathedral and the Petersberg Fortress. Krämerbrücke – a unique arched bridge with a central cobbled street and boutique stores – also deserves a special mention.

You can easily visit more of Europe’s hidden gems nearby, using Erfurt as a base. Weimar is especially worth the journey for the Renaissance-style Anna Amalia Library .

Anna_Amalia_Library-weimar

Read more: Exploring Erfurt

Plan your trip: Spend a weekend in Erfurt, or one week exploring some of Thuringia’s highlights. Spring through autumn is the nicest. Frankfurt is the nearest major gateway (2:30 hours), and discounted train tickets are offered for those with booked hotels in the region. Erfurt is also one of the best barrier-free city breaks in Germany.

Top tip: Bundle up the regions of Thuringia and Saxony, Germany into a road trip. Combined, these two states are known as the Cultural Heart of Germany.

The view of old town Bansko and the snowy mountains

15. Bansko & Pirin National Park, Bulgaria

One of the best places to visit in Europe for excellent value skiing by winter and summer hiking

Bansko was meant to be my first skiing trip. Shortly after arrival, I discovered that I was terrible at the winter sport, and quickly resigned myself to being an avid après-skier instead.

Thankfully, a ski trip in Bansko doesn’t break the bank, making it one of the best choices for first-timers who don’t want to commit to expensive options in the Alps – or pros who seek a more off the beaten path Europe experience.

For example, my chalet room, including dinners, breakfasts, transfers and drinks with Snomads , was around £300 for the week. Lessons and lift passes are also decently priced. Then – away from the slope’s inflated yet not too steep prices – the €1.55 G&Ts went down rather well too.

Before the pistes, which begin a 30-minute Gondola ride from the resort town, you’ll find all you need in Bansko Old Town. Some streets are lined with heritage buildings, while house museums and a small but stunning Orthodox church provide the culture.

If you visit outside the ski season, you’ll still be able to enjoy the old town and head into the Pirin National Park for some much more verdant hiking to lakes.

A snowy road in bansko Bulgaria

Read more: Skiing in Bansko

Plan your trip: Come for the hiking in summer or a skiing week in winter. An overnight stay is enough if you just want to explore the town and take a day hike.

Top tip: If you want to continue to Plovdiv, the slow and scenic narrow-gauge train provides a pleasant meandering journey.

Arpino's sprawling town is one of the best places to see near Rome

16. The Frosinone Valley, Italy

One of the best non touristy places to visit for a Rome side trip of verdant walks, offbeat villages, and vineyard vistas

Around halfway between Rome and Naples, the idyllic Province of Frosinone is situated in the southern part of the Lazio region.

Perhaps the most famous attraction here is the Abbey of Montecassino , a vast complex atop the hill in Cassino, which, following its destruction in World War Two, has subsequently been rebuilt.

However, I spent most of my time around the Valle di Comino. Some of Europe’s fiercest battles have taken place in these forested heartlands, but it’s now a serene setting of olive groves, mountains, and beautiful small villages.

If you’re seeking that dreamy and verdant Italy-from-the-movies feel, Frosinone will oblige. Sip delicious award-winning Cabernet in the vineyards of Atina. Discover Arpino – the ‘city of Cicero’ – and explore the ancient L’Acropoli di Civitavecchia. Then head to pretty-as-a-postcard San Donato Val di Comino for mountain-backed village views and overflowing tables in an agriturismo s’ (rural farm accommodation) farm-to-fork restaurant.

Over looking Gaeta and the sea, one of the most beautiful villages near Rome

Read more: Villages near Rome

Plan your trip: Spring through Autumn are great times to visit – I especially enjoy late September during the wine harvest. You could make this a little post-Rome getaway or a stand-alone extended vacation.

Top tip: Arpino is perhaps the best town to base yourself in for decent restaurants and a bit of life. For a more rural village stay, opt for a farm base in San Donato Val di Comino .

Restaurants on the Nisyros Waterfront

17. Nisyros Island, Greece

One of the best hidden gems in Europe for a whitewashed village escape on an Aegean-enveloped active volcano

The volcanic island of Nisyros was one of my most accidental discoveries. In fact, I didn’t even know I was going to Greece until I got invited there on a second date. Sadly, the romance never blossomed, but I did replace it with a new lover: this European hidden gem in the Aegean Sea.

While the whole place is rather unique – it’s one hulking volcano – it is hugged by idyllic whitewashed villages serving up typical Greek traits. Tavernas dish out the staples, white and blue set the scene, and bright bougainvillaea adds a splash of colour.

But, what makes this hidden gem of Europe particularly impressive is Stefanos – one of the world’s largest hydrothermal craters. It’s not the only one, either; there are a handful of them on the island. Walking into the caldera, and standing on the space-like floor, is something of a surreal – and sulphur-filled – bucket list experience.

If you stay a while, you can explore the island’s coastal villages and lounge on the dark sand and pebble beaches. Nisyros is a solid pick for that laid-back Greek lifestyle without the overwhelming crowds of, say, Santorini.

Nisyros Island Greece

Read more: Visit Nisyros Island

Plan your trip: You can day-trip from Kos – combing the two makes for a great multi-centre Greece holiday – or spend a couple of days hiking, or enjoy a week or more escaping it all. While Greece is one of Europe’s warmest winter destinations , I’d suggest avoiding the chillier months.

Top tip: Ferries leave from Kardamena, Kos, or you can book a day tour in advance.

A giant boulder sits on top of a home in Monsanto, a Europe hidden gems In

18. Monsanto and Central Portugal’s Schist Villages

One of the most quirky places in europe for mind-boggling boulders, creative retreats, and near-empty trails

In Portugal’s parched interior, Monsanto is a pretty village lauding some unusual features. Boulders call all the shots here, making it a rather unique hidden gem of Europe.

Perched atop a volcanic massif with far-reaching views to the Spanish borders, the hamlet is littered with giant rocks. Not to be deterred from making it their home, previous residents have constructed houses alongside, between and even underneath precarious looking boulders.

Monsanto isn’t a place you come to do much, and that is very much the charm. There are excellent panoramas, the remains of the fortified castle, and a timeless air that sadly is getting lost in Portugal’s ever-growing tourism scene. Side trips include admiring ancient fossils in Penha Garcia, and visiting the remains of a Roman settlement in Idanaha-A-Velha.

Closer to Coimbra, you’ll find more Schist Villages in the Serra da Lousã. Cerdeira , which has been lovingly restored, now provides a bolthole for creativity, with some of hidden Europe’s most tucked-away workshops and retreats.

Populaer tourist sights like Obidos were basically empty when I visited in June

Read more: On my Portugal website

Plan your trip: Monsanto sits in the central sun-bleached heartlands. Intense heat defines summers, and cold snaps the winter. Come in spring or march, and stay at least a night or two to enjoy the magnificent sunsets.

Top tip: Day trips from Lisbon on public transport are almost impossible, so stay a night. You’ll need to book a tour if you just want a flying peek at Monsanto.

Annecy, France – a small castle-like building raises from the waters

19. Annecy, France

One of the best places to visit in Europe for a pretty-as-a-postcard lakeside getaway

Annecy, in southeastern France, was my last ‘Europe off the beaten path’ visit of 2022. On a gloriously sunny day, the Christmas markets I came for felt slightly out of place, but the charm of this small alpine town shined as brightly as the rays from above.

Walking the excellently preserved medieval centre – the Vieille Ville – you’ll cross canals flanked by pastel-coloured facades. On an island in the largest channel, Le Palais de I’Île, a small castle, hosts a mini museum and provides a prominent photo point. Château d’Annecy – a historical monument and castle – sits higher still and serves as a more impressive museum.

But, I found the real joy in simply ambling – both along the canals and cobbled streets and the lakeside Jardins de l’Europe. The town sits on the edge of Lake Annecy, one of the country’s cleanest, lending itself to waterside strolls. Beyond, the nearby mountain trails help you go off the beaten path in the Haute-Savoie surrounds.

Plan your trip: Annecy is a pretty France weekend break year-round. In December, a Christmas market visit is one of the best things to do in France during winter. It is fairly small, so it could be a day trip, or you can use it as a base to explore the nearby snow-capped peaks.

Top tip: If you’re a fine art enthusiast, take the 80-minute side trip to Grenoble for the Musêe de Grenoble . For a regional museum, it’s incredibly well stacked with masterpieces.

Dunrobin Castle

20. Sutherland and Moray, Scotland

One of the best places to visit in Europe for castle touring, coastal walking and clan learning

Without heading to Scotland’s far-flung isles, it’s getting harder to find ‘hidden gems’ in the ever-popular nation. The mountainous country rich in lochs , legends, myths and munros is one of the most scenic escapes in Europe, and unfathomable crowds descend on the likes of Skye and Edinburgh Festivals in peak summer.

Sutherland and Moray are two parts of Scotland I love, and you can base yourself bang in the middle in Inverness if you want to explore by public transport. While Inverness isn’t as grand as Edinburgh , the cathedral and castle make for a stately setting to call home.

In Sutherland, the show’s star is Dunrobin Castle, a grand – if relatively modern – turreted delight, set amongst perfectly manicured gardens. Moray brings the older sights, with the impressive ruins of Elgin Cathedral dating back to 1224.

Along this stretch of coast, you’ll find quaint villages and killer views, and hopefully, avoid the crowds heading to the West Highlands and famous valleys such as Glencoe. That said, the NC500 coastal route has become very popular in recent years, so it might be best to skip the high season.

Plan your trip: Either use Inverness as a base to experience the area, or even better, make it a Scotland road trip . Showers can come any time of year in Scotland, but avoiding winter weather and summer crowds is advisable.

Top tip: Dunrobin Castle is closed from November until March.

Lake in switzerland

21. Lake of the Four Cantons, Switzerland

One of the best places to visit in Europe for spectacular backdrops with border-defining history

Switzerland’s lakes, mountains, timepieces, chocolates and banks have long appealed to those with the budget to travel the country. While it’s certainly not a cheap destination, free activities in the great outdoors can make it more palatable for your purse.

Lake Lucerne, or the Lake of the Four Cantons, is one of the country’s prettiest bodies of water. On the edge of the lake, you’ll find some Europe hidden gems such as Tellskapelle, the chapel honouring William Tell , Switzerland’s national hero.

While Tell himself is most likely mythical, the nearby towns provide genuine and important history for this famously neutral nation. In the cantons of Uri and Schwyz, the country established its independence – and two museums share the stories of those crucial days.

Hiking trails along the water’s edge link some smaller towns together. Beyond the settlements, the backdrop of soaring mountains – with their elevations often reachable by cable car – captivate.

Round off your visit in the larger city of Lucerne, where medieval architecture makes the Altstadt (Old Town) a pretty setting. Highlights include the Kapellbrücke – a 12th-century wooden bridge decorated with a series of triangular paintings – and the ‘saddest Lion statue’ in the world, a memorial monument dedicated to the Swiss Guards who died in the French Revolution.

Plan your trip: Spring through autumn is an excellent time to visit – I found October great. Plan a couple of days for village-hopping and at least one day in Lucerne. The public ferry pass could be good value if you want to see a few stops around the lake.

Top tip: Private boat tours allow for short sightseeing trips or more indulgent luxury lunch cruises .

Christmas lights and a church in Seiffen ore Mountains

22. The Ore Mountains, Saxony

One of the best places to visit in Europe for Christmas traditions, mountain fare, and festive markets

Look no further than the Ore Mountains for one of the best winter hidden gems in Europe . Located in the eastern state of Saxony, close to the Czech border, a winter wonderland renowned for its festive traditions awaits.

The village of Seiffen is the place to start after you’ve ticked-off the best things to do in Dresden . Here, carpenters, toy-makers, candle crafters, Moravian Star-stitchers and Angel-artists work year-round, creating something of a real-life Santa’s grotto. But, when winter – and the inevitable snow – rolls around, it’s at its finest.

Long standing seasonal traditions are very much alive, and mainly come courtesy of the surrounding ex-mining towns. Don a hard hat and heat into a decommissioned underground quarry for a candle-lit carol concert. Settle in at the table for a typical miners’ feast using age-old recipes. Then, get your fill of Glühwein and handicrafts at one of the region’s countless markets with marching band parades. Even just in Dresden, the region’s Baroque-heavy capital, you’ll find eleven themed markets, and Leipzig’s market is equally as storied, dating back to 1458.

The Ore Mountains are one of the most unique places to visit in Europe, and make for a great alternative to the continent’s most famous festive destinations.

Plan your trip: This is a land best experienced in the lead-up to Christmas. Plan to stay a night or two as part of a longer Christmas Market road trip so you can visit more of the best places to visit in Saxony, Germany – public transport is more limited around the mountains.

Top tip: If you want to attend some special events – such as parades or miners’ concerts – check for updates on this local website .

Kutna Hora Bone Church

23. Kutna Hora, Czech Republic

One of the best places to visit in Europe for a bone-chilling gothic city trip

Whilst Prague may be one of the hottest must-visit cities in Europe, and South Bohemia famous for its castles , the historic and impressive Bohemia city of Kutna Hora is still a relatively under-the-radar gem.

Discover the cobbled streets and grand Gothic architecture – especially the brawny cathedral – and then pay a respectful visit to the unique ‘Bone Church’, which is, as you might have guessed, adorned with bones.

Sedlec Ossuary shares its nearly 1000 years of history with a no-holding-back approach. Some 40,000 human skeletons form the walls, ceilings and even chandeliers. It’s quite the macabre sight.

Plan your trip: Decent year-round, but summer is best for exploring the surrounding nature. Make it an overnight visit, or come on a day trip from Prague. Group tours are offered from Prague and cost around €50 , though it’s easy and cheap to go DIY – the train takes approximately one hour.

Top tip: The Ostuary closes at 4 pm in winter and 6 pm in summer.

+ For the future: Kyiv, Ukraine

On my previous European hidden gems list, Kyiv was one of the top entries. Tragically the Russian invasion has caused misery and suffering for those living in Ukraine and, obviously, made tourism impossible. However, I leave this entry as a mention for future travel plans when we can return to Ukraine and help support and rebuild the nation through tourism.

And that’s a wrap for this 2023 edition of list underrated destinations in Europe. Got any suggestions of where I should head next to add to this list or have you visited somewhere above? Let me know in the comments and safe travels!

Awesome places. Some of the destinations, I came to know about it for the first time through your post. The European ambiance has a different charm to it and it gets tweaked from one country to another. Thanks for sharing these tidbits of information, loved reading it.

I hear so many positives about visiting Slovenia. The Vipava Valley is just another reason to visit and probably significantly cheaper and less crowed than France.

It’s amazing, simply loved this region!

Thanks for sharing this amazing list of places. Really helpful :)

informative blog. thanks a lot spending time to share it with us. really appreciate it. keep up the good work.

What is missing here is one of the best places to go when you go to France. The Dordogne, the place to be, so much to do and the food…….. Checkout and see for youself

What a find! Amazing places being featured here! You should also visit The Old Railway Station in England too

Great site. With all the restrictions on travel it is really nice to virtually explore. I love the options in Italy and will make them an objective post my Positano trip. Also great to see another option for Czech Republic in addition to Prague! Look forward to more stories as you hit the milestone of 60+ countries and counting!

Wooww…Really amazing places. Italy, Greece & Spain are in my bucket list. I want to tick off these places very soon. Your list is quite helpful especially the way you have mentioned the means for travel and how much time we should give to that place. Thank you for sharing it. Waiting for the next list!

Excellent tips! Thanks for sharing

Europe is like a dream. It has so many offbeat places that it becomes impossible to travel to all the destinations in one’s lifetime. Probably we have to take birth once again to travel to all of these beautiful locations.

thanks for the list

Such an amazing list of hidden gems in Europe, Thanks for sharing. Brisighella is one of my favorite place in Italy.

list also gets top marks for including Colchester – I live so close by!

Have you been to Santorini?

I would recommend going and staying at Parrissa Beach. This is not the hill side pictures you see with the amazing views on all the postcards. Although you can rent a four wheeler ($10 euro/day) and get there in 15 minutes. We stayed in Parissa Beach in 2011 in an apartment on the beach for about $400/month (yes per month) when rooms were going for 10x that in the tourist spots of Ios. It’s a cool scene too, tons a great beach bars, a boardwalk of restaurants, out door theaters and best of all it is all cheap as can be.

Hey, i haven’t no – I’d love to go, but it’s so touristy these days I’m not sure I would love it so much. Thanks for the tips.

When I can suggest a great place to go which really offers a real great stay for families with kids, go and see Glamping-Dordogne. They offer safaritents but really, with so much comfort.

Really a place to go.

I really enjoyed reading your go on. I’m waiting for next one

I also enjoyed myself while I was visiting this kind of places.

Hello Dan! Last summer I happened upon Monte Isola, an island in the middle of Lago d’Iseo in Lombardy. Have you ever been here? When I went, immediately fell in love with its small town vibe and stunning views. Definitely one of my lesser known places that is a must visit!

It looks amazing, but I haven’t been there yet sadly – hopefully the next time I travel through Milan I can take some days to head there :)

Such a cool round-up! Totally want to add these to my bucket list now. I visited London in the summer of 2017 and was absolutely stunned by the cobble-stoned sidewalks, the countryside and the food.

If you REALLY want to see the prettiest and most fascinating sidewalks in the world, you should defiantly take a vacation to Portugal, here the streets are well preserved and unique

As someone living in Portugal, I have to agree :)

Wow, thanks for the suggestions, guys! Will definitely plan a trip to Portugal :)

I think that Europe might be the only continent in the world that never runs out of its places to visit. The continent itself is covering with beautiful culture, medieval heritage exotic place and legacies of kingdom to read for. You can check out our Europe’s best

Some places I’ve been to, but The Hague is next! Cool write up

Hey love this post quick question though how do you take your pictures traveling solo?

If I’m in them with a tripod, but I mainly don’t take photos of me.

Czechoslovakia hasn’t been a country for quite some time now. Good pictures and lots of good destinations, though, for sure.

Yup, but I think a few cities still have the celebrations I was told.

I have been telling people about Camogli since I visited this amazing place in 2014. Glad to see it is on your list.

It’s a gem, isn’t it?!

Lagoa beach look GORGEOUS, I’m already in love! Definitely put it in my travel bucket list for this year!

I appreciate your effort. I must say that your shared all these places are the best to have great fun in Europe and tourists can enjoy some time with family and friends. I have a good experience of Lake Komani because I have been there couple of the times in my whole life to enjoy my holidays and every time had a blast of fun at this most amazing and alluring destination.

These are some really beautiful places, I have been wanting to take a vacation to the UK just couldn’t make time, after seeing these images all I wanna do is pack my bags.

Great post, thanks for sharing these awesome gems. I plan to visit Slovenia this summer and Piran wasn’t on my bucket list. I will surely add it now after seeing those wonderful photos of the place.

The pictures are so cool ! I want to go everywhere now, all the places look different and unique.

Wonderful list of amazing places in Europe. I would love to visit Skadar Lake National Park, Montenegro in upcoming days. Thanks, Dan, for sharing such a beautiful place of Europe.

Trough dordognevakantiehuizen.nl I have found a great place to stay in the Dordogne France. A real great area to visit when you go to France.

Nice people and a great place for getting to know the real French life.

Thanks for this post. I’ve recently moved to Leipzig (Saxony) and it’s nice to see it appearing on some blogs now as an area to visit. Gose beer is also from Saxony and one of Germany’s largest Sekt producers (I think it’s in Weimar). I’m looking forward to getting out to the Dresden area soon, especially for a trip over to Bastei. I’m also excited to check out more of Eastern Europe, especially Montenegro, now that I’m so much closer (than Canada). I’ve enjoyed your suggestions!

Thanks Chrissy, I’m really excited to get the chance to visit Leipzig myself in the summer, I’ve heard so many cool things about the city. Hope you enjoy living and travelling in Europe while you are here :)

Beautiful! :) Pluzine from Montenegro is my favorite. All country Montenegro have beautiful nature.

Wonderful! Your List is amazing. Great work keep it up.

Amazing post, read it for first time and was fascinated by the photos and the true information that you don’t get very often. If you visit Costa Rica, Please Visit this amazing Beach Resort

amazing photos and inspiring travel destinations. I also suggest St. Wolfgang in Austria :)

Thanks for the tip, will check it out :)

What a great list of places. Even though these are written for 2017, they will still be great gems in 2018. I’m heading on a Eastern Europe trip for 4 months in the Summer so unwell certainly be checking out some of these places. Thanks for the ideas !

Thanks Katie. I need to update for 2018 :)

Safe travels!

There is a lot of wonderful places you behind in the post that I need to check out.

Hi Dan, love the article. Two years ago, during a European road trip, we stayed in Schwangau, with the intention of visiting Neuschwanstein Castle. There wasn’t much there, to be honest. Just a nondescript main road. We couldn’t even find the castle when we first arrived, due to the mist obscuring it. It wasn’t until the next day when we were leaving that we saw it peeking out from behind its shroud. We both exclaimed “It was behind us all this time!”.

As we were leaving we drove through the neighbouring town of Füssen. It looks like a much more characterful town and we wished we had stayed there. Next time!

This year’s road trip took in Riquewhir/Colmar/Eguisheim, all stunning. Then onto Lauterbrunnen :0, Orta San Guilio – beautiful and quiet, Sirmione – hot, bustling and lovely. Postojna – dig those caves, through Istria, taking in Buzet and Motovun until we reached Rovinj, which we absolutely love. Stunning old town and the unrivaled Punta Corrente park.

Our return journey took in Venice – on the cheap, there is a campsite on the other side of the lagoon where you can camp for approx €20-30 per night. Then onto Menaggio (Much nicer than Belaggio, not so geared up to selling you expensive baubles). From there to Freiburg, then over the Black Forest high road, across a bit of France, up the length of Luxembourg to Clervaux for the Family of Man exhibit. Clervaux was/is a unique place. I don’t know quite how I’d describe it. They seem to have a thing for anthropomorphic furniture and decorations. They were also pumping Yello’s “The Race” from the town’s PA system, for no discernible reason. Last stop was Bruges, but this isn’t a hidden gem, just a gem.

Sounds like such an amazing trip, hoping to do it myself next year so will keep Fussen in mind as a base.

And also wow, thank you for all these amazing tips of places. Moving back to Europe in 2018 so this has given me lots of new places to adventure too.

Hope the next trip is just as exciting for you :)

Love the list, I definitely need to save some of your recommendations for my next trips:) I would also add Polish capital, Warsaw. Even though I didn’t expect much from it, it turned out to be one of the most amazing destinations I have been to. It is traditional and very modern at the same time, it is such an unique and great combinations. It is truly a stunning city. And the gastronomic aspect of it is incredible – there are tens of amazing restaurants worth visiting. My personal favorite is called the Akademia, a place with modern versions of traditional Polish cuisine. So creative and delicious! I will for sure go back one day :D

I loved Warsaw too, sadly I visited in January and it was just too cold to do anything! Excited to go back and see it in the summer one day. Safe travels :)

If you like visiting cities, I recommend it again Gdańsk, Wrocław, Kraków, Toruń, Zamość, Poznań. In addition to cities, we have mountains and depression, beautiful beaches, many lakes, forests and even dunes and a desert … :) We have all

These little gems look amazing, adding them to our visit list! Thanks for sharing

They are some of my favourites, hope you get to some of them soon :)

Agree with your list of most affordable destinations in 2017. Croatia ,England are going to be in any list of cheap travel destinations……I have been to these places and I can’t forget the wonderful experiences I had…..some countries with unique cultures, amazing nature and exceptional food (very cheap yet delicious)

Dan a great list of which I have visited a number. I went to Hvar from Australia for the first time 16 years ago, it has always had great affordable high quality B&B accommodation. I have been back to Croatia three times since then as it is my favourite summer destination in Europe and Hvar now has more 4 & 5 star hotels and the B&B places are more expensive but are still the main source of accommodation in all of Croatia. Everybody does this and is most peoples major source of income. Some rooms are superb and have views and all for 100 dollars night. It is however a very popular place as is Lake Bled. Another few gem in Croatia that I will let you in on are the town of Betina on the island of Murter and the town of Komiza on the island of Vis. Popular but not over busy. Check them out on Google

Thanks for the tips Dan. I’m really hoping to get back to Croatia this summer and explore more of the Islands so will add these to my list. It’s such a beautiful country to explore.

Another good Spanish town would be Lekeitio, Spain up in Basque country. An adorable little town with a beautiful beach surrounded by those massive cliffs that are sprinkled all over the Basque coastal area, plus this awesome little island right inside the bay that you can walk out to and explore. And pintxos everywhere :) We rented a car and drove all along that coast, there are so many awesome little villages and towns up there it was hard to pick one to stop at!

This places sounds beautiful, I really need to spend some more time in Spain. Thanks for the tips :)

Ahhh Kutna Hora was such a weird and cool town! That bone church was unreal, and I think it was still low season because I felt like I was the only person in town so the whole trip gave me a badass, kind of eery vibe. And Hvar is totally not just for rich people with yachts! My boyfriend and I brought camping gear and camped out by the water for three nights on Hvar and it was gorgeous (getting all glammed up for a night out at a nice restaurant in a tent was a fun little first for me too!). Great post Dan! I can’t wait to see some of these other towns in my future travels :)

Haha, yeah it does have a very forgotten about eiry feel to it. Haha, I loved that you camped in Hvar, people always assume its for the rich and famous but think you proved them wrong :D

So many beautiful places to visit! So little time… ;-) I need to finally get to Gdańsk – it would such a nice weekend trip, as I live just 3h by train from it. Some of those photos are just unbelievably beautiful! Thank you for making this list!

Ahh you really should, and head over to Sopot whilst you are there (especially in summer). Thanks for reading :)

You’ve 100% fuelled my list of “must visit’s” this year. As a side note. I once fell asleep on a train in Liechtenstein and seemingly did the opposite of what you did! I then had to sneak back on a train (platform in the middle of nowhere. With no ticket office) and back into the country (with a “slight” wait in the freezing cold snow.)

Haha, it must be something about the trains there! Who knew it would be so hard to find the country properly ;)

I like this list very much! I was so schocked to see Colchester on there (or Colch as it is locally known). It’s a town I visit sometimes and is only an hour away from me so I never really saw it as a tourist spot before!

Good old Colch. Had to through a few of my home favourites on there :)

Hi, glad to see the list they are all really awesome places. I like to travel to hidden places like you. Here is one, I think you would like it. “Blooming cherry tree street”, Bonn, Germany. It’s not that well known to people but it is one beautiful street. The city Bonn is okay, but this street grabed my attention. It’s best to go in the fall around August and September to get the view of the cherry trees.

This sounds beautiful, just had a quick Google. Germany is somewhere I really owe a longer visit. Safe travels :)

Glad to see Kutna Hora on your list – doesn’t get much mention and the town itself is often overshadowed by the bone church (which is honestly not fair, it’s a great little town).

Although the church is interesting I agree, the town itself deserves a lot more credit. It’s a great spot. Safe travels :)

The walk up to Saint Barbara’s church with all the statues lining the street was so pretty, and a little spooky in a fun sort of way because it was foggy and it the sun was starting to go down. Loved Kutna Hora :)

All of these places sound fantastic,I have visited many european countries but I see you don’t mention Greece! So much to discover there. You must visit Kalavrita. It can be reached by a narrow gauge railway as its at the top of a mountain. The train takes you through natrow gorges snd beautiful scenery until you reach the top. It’s history during world war 2 is tragic but I’ll leave you to gen up on that.

I really do need to get back to Greece. I have only been to Athens and Corfu so I have a lot more to explore there. I will certainly be sure to visit Kalavrita next time, sounds like the scenery is a must visit.

Neuschwanstein in Schwangeau is not really a town. The only thing there are the two castles, which are amazing. But the actual town is called Fussen, which is one of the most beautiful and quaint towns I’ve ever been to. It’s surrounded by amazing mountains and trees. Just make sure to get there early enough during the day because they will sell out of tickets, and close fairly early. I was only able to tour one of the castles because they sold out. But Fussen is incredible. The train ride there from Munich isn’t that long. I think it was about an hour and a half, and the ride is as equally beautiful and relaxing. It was definitely a great day trip.

You should also check out many of the small towns in Turkey. It’s one of my favorite countries (I’ve been to 16 so far). On the Mediterranean there is a town called Bodrum. There is a really cool castle there I spent the whole day exploring it. My boyfriend has a house in the town next to Bodrum, called Turgetreis. It’s a small town, but so beautiful. All along the Mediterranean. You can see the Greek islands from pretty much anywhere in the town. We rode scooters around the town and through the sidewalk, ate ice cream and drank fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and ate fresh bread, walked through the bizarre. It’s the place I always think of when I want to escape life. You can take a ferry ride to any of the Greek islands. You can take a bus ride to fehtiye (the Turkish dead sea). There are also small towns next to Turgetreis that are just so small, but beautiful. With little bracelet stands and homemade dishes and locally done paintings. All the beaches along these towns are great for relaxing. You’ll never want to leave, some tourists never do.

Ahhhh, I was misled into thinking Schwangau was a proper town – great to know, thank you. I’m all about castles so if there are two I’ll be a happy man.

Turkey is somewhere I really do need to explore more, three visits to Istanbul and still not made it out of the city. I think I’ll take your scooter tip and go for an explore along the coast, it sounds incredible. Safe travels :)

Great list! Love your top tip for Hof in Iceland, and interestingly I’ve been to Hvar years ago and thought it was incredible too. However friends went this year and thought it was over crowded now

Yeah, I bet most of Croatia is much busier than I remember it being. Hof is a must if you head to Iceland!

I did a Euro Trip in May-June and you hit the description of Bled and Ljubljana spot on – both amazing cities and Bled is a hidden gem. I have been to the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles and I stayed in the adorable little town of Fussen, Germany. It was only a short, inexpensive local bus ride away. I don’t recommend paying to see the inside of the Neuschwanstein because they don’t give you very much access and the beautiful views outside are well-worth it. I HIGHLY recommend walking around the lake (Alpsee) because it is absolutely incredible. Enjoy!

THANK YOU! Love more tips like this, will have a google and try to fit them in :) Safe travels in 2017!

I love that you have Carvoeiro in this list. I stayed in Carvoiero for a few days this summer and I just did not want to leave. I loved Port De Soller too but Pollenca in Mallorca is equally gorgeous and hidden.

Oooh Pollenca, I missed that one but it looks lovely. And yes, it is such a beautiful places – I used to live there and worked at Mungos Bar (if you had a chance to visit) – very overdue a return trip!

Meteora, Greece – beautiful monasteries – 5 or 6 of them. Easily accessible by train from Athens (4 hours). Quaint towns with fabulous restaurants, friendly people and great/inexpensive places to stay.

YES! This is so high on my list, I am sure once I finally visit it will make it onto next years copy :)

Armona island. A ferry ride from Olhao in Portugal. A taste of paradise. No cars!

WOW. Looks beautiful, thanks for the tip. Will see if I can fit it into my Portugal plans for next year :)

These are such great tips for when we don’t have too much time to jet around the world.

I grew up close to Bled and even remember ice-skating on the lake in winter, too bad it doesn’t really freeze anymore. Grmada is my favorite dessert there, a bit different and messier than the famous kremsnita ☺ Bohinj is another beautiful little area close to Bled, even wilder and perfect for a (cold) swim, while the Soča Valley is just completely stunning.

Maya | londondamsel.co.uk

Oh no, I missed a dessert?!?! Haha. Thank you, Bled is just so special I can’t wait to return and travel much more of the country.

Thanks and happy travels :)

Slovenia (and Lake Bled) is one of my most favorite places in Europe and is highly underrated.

I think that is going to change pretty quickly, it is getting a lot of attention now!

I would recommend the Alsacian region in France, particularly the town of Eguisheim, but also Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and Obernai. While Equisheim, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are beautiful but very crowded with tourists in the high season, Obernai is a bustling market town, with many nice restaurants, wine bars and little shops, as well as nice architecture.

Thank you for such different suggestions. They have gone on the list :)

Montenegro really surprised me at just how incredible the landscape was, especially around Pluzine :)

I love visiting smaller towns! Gdansk is high on my list — was just daydreaming about a (hopeful) 2017 trip to Poland. I’d also add Lviv in Ukraine — coffee and chocolate capital of the country! It also has a military themed bar and a secret Masonic restaurant. It’s on the western side of Ukraine, easily accessible from Poland and Hungary.

Gdansk is fantastic cause you have Sopot nearby too. I haven’t made it to Ukraine yet but hear a lot of positives about Lviv. – will check it out. Thanks :)

What a fantastic list! I want to go to them all ha ha! I’m hoping we can do a Scandinavia/Arctic trip maybe next year, and Iceland will most definitely be on that list so Glacier Beach looks incredible. Love your photos – stunning & inspiring.

I love Bled! The cake is a must see! Well, eat. I also recommend Beilstein in Germany – tiny and adorable and enticing. I went to Schwangau last month – book a tour so you can make sure you get in to the castle!

Ahhh the cake, ate far too much haha. Thanks for the tip, will check it out. Safe travels :)

Could definitely make a great European road trip of this list! So much fun would that be! Even though I was born and raised in Europe, this continent knows to surprise in the most wonderful ways each and every time

It is one of those continents that just keeps giving for sure! AND wow, what an epic road trip that would be.

Hi Dan, great list! I have been lucky enough to have been to a few of these myself. I have mapped the list out and shared it on my website, check it out if you like … http://www.thetravelblogs.com/europe/southern-europe

Keep up the amazing work and happy travels!

Hey Matt, Thanks so much – safe travels :)

Love this list! Of all the towns that I’ve visited on this list, I can definitely confirm that they are worth a visit! Especially Bled!! This list also gets top marks for including Colchester – I live so close by!

Haha, Colchester needs a little more internet loving I figured. Bled is just magical right? :)

OMG these photos…incredible!

Thank you Tamara :) Such beautiful places to visit!

Amazing list!

Thank you! Love all these spots :)

Ready to explore Europe? Here are 5 destinations you can't miss in 2023

After nearly 3 years of interrupted and difficult travel, most of Europe has dropped all pandemic restrictions and is open for business. Not only is it open, it’s looking like 2023 will be a record year for many locations.

So if you’re ready for your next (or first) trip to the continent, here are 5 destinations you should consider.

1) London, England

Sunset view of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster bridge. The iconic clock tower is silhouetted against a vivid orange and pink sky, with the Thames River flowing in the foreground. The image captures the beauty and grandeur of London's architecture and skyline at twilight.

Home to luxury hotels, charming pubs, world-class (and often free) museums, and centuries of history, London has something for everyone.

2023 will also be a historic year, with the coronation of King Charles III taking place on May 6.

Known for its luxury hotels, the London scene is set for a shakeup in 2023 with multiple highly anticipated openings including The Peninsula London in Belgravia, the Mandarin Oriental in Mayfair, and the Raffles London at the Old War Office.

For the best weather with fewer crowds, consider traveling in April/May or September/October.

Read more: 10 things you (probably) don’t know about London

2) Sicily, Italy

Palermo Cathedral, a stunning medieval church located in the heart of the historic city center. The image shows the intricate details of the cathedral's ornate facade, including its distinctive Arab-Norman architecture and intricate mosaics. The warm colors of the stone walls and the blue sky in the background add to the beauty of the scene, capturing the essence of Sicilian art and history.

Fans of White Lotus who want to experience the real-life luxury that inspired the second season of the hit show will want to take a trip to the island of Sicily. From the capital city of Palermo to the luxury hotels of Taormina (where the show was set), there’s no shortage of things to see and do.

In addition to the luxury hotel scene, take the time to visit Sicily’s multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, remote mountain communities, and charming seaside villages.

Sicily has its own unique style of Italian cuisine. Seafood is plentiful thanks to the island’s 600 miles of coastline, and arancini (fried rice balls) are one of the most popular snacks. Pasta alla norma, with tomato, eggplant and salted ricotta cheese, and pasta con le sarde, with sardines, fennel, pine nuts and raisins are also popular.

3) Transylvania, Romania

Rural landscape of Transylvania, Romania, featuring rolling hills and green fields stretching towards the distant mountains. The image showcases a peaceful and idyllic countryside scene with scattered traditional houses and farms, surrounded by lush forests and trees in autumn colors. The misty atmosphere and low-hanging clouds add a touch of mystery to the landscape, evoking the region's folklore and legends.

To experience Europe’s last true wilderness, head north of Romania’s capital of Bucharest to Transylvania. There you’ll find alpine meadows, ragged limestone ridges, and old-growth forests.

Transylvania’s mountains are still home to Europe’s largest carnivores, including brown bears, wolves and lynx. A reserve is currently being created to protect this vast wilderness, a “European Yellowstone” that will stretch across 618,000 untamed acres in Romania’s Southern Carpathian Mountains.

While most people know of Transylvania thanks to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it’s also a famous wine region best known for its whites. The region has been producing wine for approximately 6,000 years, making it one of the oldest producers of wine in the world.

4) Vienna, Austria

A charming square in Vienna, Austria, surrounded by historic buildings and bustling with activity. The image shows outdoor cafes with tables and chairs, where locals and tourists gather to enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation. The ornate architecture of the buildings, featuring balconies, stucco facades, and wrought iron details, adds to the city's charm and elegance.

2023 marks the 150th anniversary of Vienna’s 1873 World’s Fair, and the city is planning celebrations all year long to mark the event. It’s also the 300th anniversary of the city’s palatial Belvedere museum.

Vienna is also famous for its coffee house culture, and Café Landtmann, one of Vienna's best-known coffee houses, will also celebrate its 150th anniversary this year.

Nonstop flights from multiple US cities make Vienna an easy city to visit, but it can also now be paired easily with a trip to Paris thanks to the NightJet train service that will run three times per week. Guests can enjoy a private compartment, departing Paris around dinner time and arriving in Vienna around 10am.

5) Hvar, Croatia

A scenic evening view of Hvar city and harbor, located on the Croatian island of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea. The image features a colorful sky at sunset, with golden rays of sunlight reflecting on the calm waters of the harbor. Several luxurious yachts and boats are visible, moored in the harbor, surrounded by historic buildings, terracotta roofs, and palm trees. The picture captures the unique blend of natural beauty and Mediterranean charm that characterizes Hvar's coastal town.

If you’re looking for sun, look no further than Hvar, Croatia. The Dalmatian island bills itself as the sunniest in Croatia.

Thanks to Croatia’s acceptance into the Schengen travel zone, passport checks entering and exiting Croatia from mainland Europe will no longer be necessary and the Euro will become the official currency in 2023. That makes it even easier to add Croatia to a European trip this year.

The island also has some of the best stargazing in southern Europe, with Jesla, on the island’s north shore, being named southern Europe’s first International Dark Sky Community.

Lavender lovers will want to visit in July, when the town of Velo Grablje celebrates its lavender festival. Food, drink, and family-friendly activities of all kinds are centered around the beautiful, fragrant Mediterranean plant.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re looking for big city adventures, wine tasting or time spent in nature, Europe has something to offer in 2023.

If you're ready to start planning your next vacation you'll want our free download, "5 Tips for Planning Your Dream Trip."

Dana is a Travel Tomorrow reporter. She graduated in Political Science and International Relations. She moved to Brussels from Romania for her studies and Mont des Arts made her fall in love with the city and remain here. She loves animals, especially dogs, and everything food related, but dessert most of all.

The 20 most voted countries of the European Best Destination 2023 competition have been revealed. Over a period of 21 days, more than half a million travellers from 178 countries voted for their favourite places to visit this year.

More than 400 cities entered the competition, out of which 21 were pre-selected by the organisers based on the cultural and touristic offer of the destinations as well as their quality of life, their sustainable development and growth of popularity on social networks during the past 12 months.

This year’s edition saw the largest ever share of votes coming from outside Europe (52%), with less than half (48%) coming from within. This shows that, more than ever, foreign travellers have a strong interest in travelling to Europe.

The 20 winning cities are named Europe’s best for the year, enjoying a special place on European Best Destination’s website until 31 December, as well as promotion by the project’s media partners.

Warsaw is the best European destination to visit in 2023

Without further ado, here are the top European destinations to visit this year. Hopefully you will find inspiration among them for a city break, a sunny vacation, a romantic getaway, shopping, culture or immersion in nature.

1. Warsaw, Poland

Beautiful, friendly, green, open-minded, perfect for a family city break, a cultural city break, a shopping experience, a romantic stay, Warsaw, the European Best Destinations 2023 has something to offer to everyone. Take a walk in its beautiful parks, relax on its city beaches, take advantage of its great gastronomic offer, come at any time of the year and take advantage of its rich calendar of events.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Go2Warsaw (@go2warsaw)

You will be dazzled by its emblematic places such as the Old Town Market Square and its colourful buildings, the Palace of Culture and Science which is the tallest building in Poland, the Łazienki Park and its palaces, pavilions and orangeries. During your stay in the Best European destination 2023 do not miss to stroll in “Krakowskie Przedmieście” the most prestigious street in Warsaw and to visit The Warsaw Barbican, the historic fortifications that once encircled the city.

2. Athens, Greece

The capital of Greece is a must-see destination for many reasons. First of all, it is the cradle of democracy and philosophy. Many assume that the blue of the sea, the incredible landscapes and the beautiful sunlight help spirits escape from everyday life and arise.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Travel Tomorrow (@traveltomorrow.eu)

Athens is a sophisticated cosmopolitan hub with excellent gastronomic delights, electrifying nightlife, creative vibes and a booming art scene. It is an artistic beacon of the ancient world with spectacular Mediterranean landscapes.

3. Maribor, Slovenia

The city of Maribor is a charming cultural, culinary and educational centre in the north-eastern part of Slovenia. The city’s deep cultural and historical roots date back to the Middle Ages and therefore the old city centre offers a rich heritage and a wealth of genuine experiences. In particular, the locals are proud of their Guinness World Record holder, the oldest grapevine in the world.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Visit Maribor (@visitmaribor)

Maribor – the European Capital of Culture in 2012 – has a reputation for a happy and hospitable city, hosting numerous international cultural and sporting events throughout the year. Don’t miss the lively atmosphere of summer festivals, and enjoy an active city break just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the city centre on the green Mt. Pohorje. The picturesque natural scenery offers endless opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, and adrenaline sports.

4. Vienna, Austria

Vienna is an ideal destination for romantics: what better than a horse-drawn carriage ride followed by a visit to the Royal Palaces of Vienna? And in the evening, a waltz to the sound of Strauss’s Blue Danube to transport you to the time of the Empress Sissi? That said, Vienna is also the perfect city for a sparkling, original city break for friends, families, lovers and singles.

The city’s parks classified among the most beautiful city parks in Europe. Its amusement park, “The Prater”, is home to one of the most beautiful Ferris wheels in Europe. It is also considered to be one of the best places for a marriage proposal.

5. Cittadella, Italy

Cittadella is located in the heart of the Veneto Region, in Northern Italy, in a strategic position because it is close to all the most important cities in the area. It is located 60 km from Venice and Verona and only 3h drive from Milan or Florence. Best Places to Visit in Europe

Andalucia, Spain

Andalucia is one of the most beautiful parts of Spain, with a rich heritage, fascinating history, delicious food, and plenty of things to do and see. Home to the highest mountains in continental Spain but also to the country’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, there is something for everyone in Andalucia.

The cities of Granada, Cordoba, and Sevilla have the most fascinating Moorish fortresses, landscaped gardens, and palaces. In between, dotted along the mountainsides, you will find the famous white villages of Andalucia, built strategically for defense and now some of the most charming places to visit. Just outside of Granada, in the Northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, you will find Guadix, a city in which some people have lived for centuries and are still living in caves.

The coast is divided between the different municipalities of Andalucia. The most famous one, where hundreds of thousands of tourists go every year is Costa del Sol. Marbella, Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Estepona attract beachgoers as well as golfers, who come to play on one of the award-winning  golf courses around Malaga . The gems of Andalucia are however Costa de la Luz – where Cadiz is, and Costa Tropical – where Salobrena and Almunecar are. Here you can escape the crowds of tourists and enjoy the real Andaluz lifestyle.

There are plenty of amazing hotels in Andalucia, but if you are looking for something special, check out Convento de la Magdalena near Antequera, a hotel built inside an old convent.

european places to visit 2023

Annecy, France

If there is one place that you must visit in Europe, make it Annecy, France . This smaller city is located in the southeast of France in the alps, only about 50 km from Geneva, Switzerland.

Known as the “Venice of France,” Annecy is full of the most charming canals lined with colorful flowers. The canals lead up to one of the most beautiful alpine lakes called Lake Annecy. Be entranced by the mountains on the other side of the lake and the crystal clear waters as you partake in a paddleboat ride.

Then, be sure to visit the Old Town Market. This sprawling farmer’s market takes place throughout the year on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 7 am-1 pm. Pick up local meats, cheeses, fruits, veggies, and bread before making a picnic by Lake Annecy. It is the perfect way to spend an afternoon!

While you’re in the area, definitely check out the wineries of the Savoie wine region too. Known for white wines, you can explore the vineyards and beautiful mountain slopes as you sip crisp Jacquère and Roussanne. Being located in the French alps, expect some delicious, hearty (and cheesy) alpine food. L’Etage serves up alpine classics like fondue and raclette. After adventuring around Annecy, rest up at Atipik Hôtel Alexandra , a lovely hotel right next to the old city.

Annecy may be a smaller city in Europe, but with its alpine lake, charming canals, and delicious gastronomy, you’ll be wanting to return to this medieval city time and again!

european places to visit 2023

Bansko, Bulgaria

Located at the foot of the Pirin National Park is the mountain town of Bansko, Bulgaria.   Bansko is Bulgaria’s largest ski resort during the winter when you’ll find cheap skiing and excellent quality mehanas (restaurants) serving great local food.   The Baryakova restaurant has long been a town favorite with locals and visitors alike.  Aside from skiing, there’s some great snowshoeing, ice skating, and incredible hot springs and spas here.  Once the snow goes (usually early April), then you can try out some of the glorious hiking trails through the National Park, which has a series of mountain huts where board and lodge are offered to visitors.

There’s also an excellent mountain biking community, horse riding and hot air balloon trips too!  Summer in Bansko  sees Bulgarians heading to the mountains for some respite from the two major Bulgarian cities, Plovdiv and Sofia, the capital just 2 hours away. You’ll also be able to take in the international Jazz Festival in  August – it’s free and is a fabulous way to spend a summer evening. There’s plenty of accommodation here, but you’re likely to be able to snap up a room at the Five Star Kempinski Grand Arena out of ski season for as little as 45 euros a night!

european places to visit 2023

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a wonderful mixture of history and culture that often takes visitors by surprise. It continues to evolve and change throughout the years. Even if you’ve been to Berlin before, numerous new museums opened including a Samurai Museum Berlin, a Computer Games Museum, and the Stabi Kulturwerk. The Stabi Kulturwerk has thousands of artefacts from over 600 years of library history! It’s a unique museum perfect for the book-loving traveler!

Seeing the Berlin Wall up close is like time traveling through history. Standing near the wall is a humbling experience. The art is eye-catching but the symbolism is more important. Speaking of history, be sure to pay your respects at the Holocaust Memorial. It’s in the heart of the city and is a powerful memorial.

Be sure to spend at least two days in Berlin to really get a feel for the city.

european places to visit 2023

Cardiff, Wales

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and, because it’s such an underrated and off-the-beaten-path city, it’s one of the best places to visit in Europe.

When visiting Cardiff, you must explore the history of the city which includes visiting Cardiff Castle right in the centre of the city, Castell Coch which looks like a fairytale castle, and St Fagans, the outdoor, natural museum of Welsh history where you can learn about traditional Welsh life. Speaking of tradition, you cannot visit Cardiff without sampling classic  Welsh cuisine  such as a hot bowl of Cawl, locally brewed beer and delicious Welsh cakes. You can get the very best food, both local and international, as well as some retail therapy in the popular Cardiff Indoor Market!

A good place to stay in Cardiff on a budget is the Bunkhouse Hostel or for somewhere mid-range try the Mercure Holland House on Newport Road. Both options are in the city centre and within walking distance of the top attractions. The great advantage of Cardiff is that everything is within walking distance and there are lots of things to do packed in the centre of the city. If you find yourself in Cardiff when the Wales rugby team is playing, you’re in for a treat to witness the passion and patriotism of the Welsh people.

european places to visit 2023

Dublin, Ireland

One of my favorite cities, Dublin, is often an overlooked destination. However, it should be on your list of cities to visit in Europe in 2022. There are plenty of things to do in Dublin and even just walking around you’ll find awesome hidden gems.

While it might seem a bit odd to walk around a college campus, Trinity College should be an exception. The stunning campus is also home to the Book of Kells – a stunning piece of art! After you’re done on campus, head to Dublin Castle. The castle looms over the city and honestly, looks a bit out of place but it is a pretty cool place to visit! On this side of the River Liffey, you’ll also find St. Stephen’s Green, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Temple Bar area.

When walking down the River Liffey, you’ll see a lot of bridges, but none so picturesque as the Ha’penny Bridge (pictured below). The white bridge dates back to 1816 and gets its nickname from the cost of the toll to cross it (a halfpenny). There isn’t a fee today, so enjoy the walk!

On the other side of the Liffey you’ll find the Jameson Distillery, the National Museum of Ireland, and even the National Leprechaun Museum of Ireland! Dublin truly has something for everyone and shouldn’t be missed in 2022!

european places to visit 2023

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle looms over the city and is an impressive feat of architecture. You can get a bird’s eye view of the city from the walls. It was built in 1296 and stands on the site of an earlier castle. It is one of Scotland ‘s most popular tourist attractions and is home to the Crown Jewels.

From the castle, you can walk down the Royal Mile . It’s actually a little over 1 mile long. It’s home to numerous restaurants, museums, and hidden gems! Enjoy street performers, haggis, and (if you’re over 21) a whisky tasting. Keep an eye out for the Heart of Midlothian – a cobblestone heart marking where a number of public executions took place. Don’t stand too close though – it’s tradition that people spit on the heart!

St. Giles’ Cathedral has an impressive exterior and is equally beautiful on the inside. Saint Giles is the patron saint of Edinburgh, lepers, and cripples. At the bottom of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyrood House – the official residence of the Queen when she is in Scotland. If she’s not in residence, you can take a tour of the fourteen apartments and gardens.

Edinburgh is a great city to visit and start your Scotland vacation in 2023!

The Fjords in Norway

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime destination in Europe, you should take a look at Norway and the country’s beautiful fjords.

Start your journey in Bergen, Norway’s second city and gateway to the fjords. Spend a day or two in Bergen itself exploring the city – don’t miss the historic UNESCO heritage-listed Bryggen warehouses by the port and the funicular railway up to the top of Mount Fløyen for outstanding views of the islands that protect Bergen’s port from the North Sea.

Bergen sits between Norway’s longest fjord Sognefjord to the north and the beautiful Hardangerfjord to the south. One of the most popular ways to see the fjords is the  Norway in a Nutshell   self-guided tour which takes in a trip by electric boat on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord. It also includes a trip on the Flåm Railway and the Bergen to Oslo line.

If you want to stay overnight in the heart of the fjords, consider staying at the Flåmsbrygga Hotel in Flåm, at the head of the Aurlandsfjord. This tiny village is busy with visitors during the day but peaceful at night, and is well-located for beautiful walks around the fjord. The hotel has two restaurants and its own microbrewery.

Giethoorn, Netherlands

Welcome to Giethoorn, the Netherlands’ pride! Giethoorn is an enchanting little village northeast of Amsterdam. Its fame rests on the brand of peace and beauty that only Giethoorn can provide. People agree that this magical village in the province of Overijssel is worthy of its moniker – “Venice of the Netherlands”.

When in Giethoorn, get on one of the whisper boats for a magical ride along the lovely village canals. Gliding through the waterways of Giethoorn is one of the leading tourism draws here. Hop on a rented boat, see the sights, and pass through hundreds of wooden arch bridges and,  along with thatched-roof houses, cottages, parks, and cafés.

On land, visit Olde Maat Uus Museum to see and experience how the first settlers established their community and built this enchanting village. This is a must-see destination in Giethoorn.

Giethoorn is also popular for its Michelin-starred restaurants. Sample the best dishes at De Lindenhof, one of the best restaurants in the Netherlands. De Lindenhof serves dishes lovingly prepared by their internationally known, two Michelin-starred Chef Martin Kruithof.

Visit Giethoorn today  and stay at Plompeblad Giethoorn , a B&B that is actually a farmhouse with two apartments. Plompeblad serves as a great base to explore Giethoorn and the surrounding areas.

european places to visit 2023

Helsinki, Finland

One of the most underrated cities in Scandinavia is the beautiful capital of Finland, Helsinki. Helsinki is smaller than its mainland Europe sisters like Rome and Paris, so you won’t find a lot of crowds around the city.

The iconic Senate Square is home to some of the most important buildings in the country. At the heart of the square is Helsinki Cathedral. The stairs outside are often a meeting point and hang-out location for locals. Both the inside and outside are stunning works of architecture. Nearby are the Government Palace, the university, and Sederholm house. Spend at least one day in Helsinki wandering the streets and you’re guaranteed to find hidden gems like the Kamppi Chapel (also known as the Chapel of Silence).

Don’t be afraid to join the locals in a traditional Finnish sauna. It’s estimated that there is a sauna for every 2 people in Finland! You’ll find them in most houses and accommodations throughout Helsinki, as well as public saunas. If you’re visiting in the winter, you can jump into cold water after for a true Finnish experience.

Be sure to stay at the Klaus K hotel for easy access to attractions and incredible Finnish design. They also have a delicious breakfast available during your stay!

Helsinki Cathedral in Helsinki, FInland

Istria, Croatia

Istria in Croatia  is definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe! This wonderful peninsula enchants with a huge selection of romantic coastal towns, dream beaches like out from a travel magazine, and a romantic hinterland with wine hills almost like in Tuscany! Also, there is a wide range of possibilities for sports, such as SUP, kayaking, biking, and hiking.

A must-see is the colorful harbor town of Rovinj, perched on a hill overlooking the coast and enchanting with a beautiful old town. Another highlight of Istria is the nature park Cape Kamenjak with its amazing coastal landscapes and numerous beautiful beaches. Last, but not least don`t miss seeing the coastal city of Pula with the huge Roman amphitheater!

If you love to taste amazing food, you will find really good restaurants in Istria, the so-called konobas. A real insider tip is La Puntulina in Rovinj, where they serve excellent fish platters!

If you are planning a trip, it is best to visit Istria between May and October. In this period you can count on the best weather! The nearest international airports can be found in Pula and Rijeka.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Situated in the foothills of the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is a fascinating destination to visit in Slovenia. With its turquoise water, a postcard-perfect island and picturesque landscapes, Lake Bled looks like something out of a fairytale and is often regarded as one of the  most beautiful places in Slovenia .  Some of the most popular activities at Lake Bled are visiting the medieval Bled Castle, strolling along the scenic 6-km path around the lake and renting a rowboat to explore Bled Island and its church. If you’re in the mood for something more active, hike to the Ojstrica viewpoint for some incredible vistas of the lake or go paddle-boarding or swimming in the crystal clear water. While visiting the lake, be sure to taste the Bled Cream Cake, a famous local dessert. One of the best places to enjoy this cake is the magnificent Cafe Belvedere that offers a breathtaking view of the lake and the island.  Whether you prefer staying in a rustic cottage or a modern hotel, there’s an abundance of accommodation options to choose from around Lake Bled. One of the most unique places to stay here is Old Bled House , a boutique hotel set in a historical wooden house with quaint decor.

Lucerne, Switzerland

The beautiful city of Lucerne is often an overlooked destination in Switzerland . This smaller city has plenty of personality, charm, and -of course- fondue, to please any visitor!

There are plenty of things to do in Lucerne , including wandering through Old Town, go for a hike in the Swiss Alps, and visiting some of the islands in the middle of Lake Lucerne.

It’s impossible to miss the beautiful Chapel Bridge. It’s on Reichenau Island and is home to some intricate art, right on the bridge’s ceiling! If you want more art, head to Rietli Island, home to the Museum of Art and Culture.

Lake Lucerne is surrounded by the two highest mountains in Switzerland. Take a gondola to the top of Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus. From the top of these mountains, you can see the entire lake and surrounding area. Don’t forget about the impressive past of this area. Lucerne was the main trading route of ancient Rome then was Napoleon’s empire capital.

For accommodation, check out C ascade Hotel in the heart of the city. Due to its beauty and charm, Lucerne should be on your European bucket list!

european places to visit 2023

For one of the best places to visit in Europe for 2023, find yourself planning  a trip to Luxembourg ! The city of Luxembourg is easy to get to since it’s surrounded by Belgium, France, and Germany. It’s a gorgeous route through the city park with Grund being a great neighborhood for a bite to eat or an evening drink. For the bite to eat, find a seat at restaurant Bosso Luxembourg – they have a pretty garden outside area to sit at with delicious Mediterranean main courses.

If you wish to stay in the city centre, find yourself booking a room at the  Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal . Here you can enjoy a comfy bed and clean room to relax in after long days exploring the city. Their lounge has a great view for sunset too!

Northumberland, England

Northumberland is England’s most northerly county, located on the stunning east coast.  The county has had a stormy history and boasts more than 70 castles, from the glorious Bamburgh Castle to the moody and atmospheric Dunstanburgh Castle and the incredible Alnwick Castle, more often recognized as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies.  So it goes without saying that visiting a castle should be one of the  top things that you should do in Northumberland .  If you can only visit one make it Bamburgh Castle, high on the cliff above an awe-inspiring beach.  Make your trip extra special and stay in one of the luxurious apartments within the castle.   In Bamburgh, you’re not far from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where a ruined priory, another castle, and some glorious walks await.  Be sure to warm yourself up with some Lindisfarne Mead made to the original recipes from the monks of old!  You can only reach Lindisfarne by an ancient causeway and only then at certain states of the tide!

For an unforgettable trip take a boat trip from nearby Seahouses to the Farne Islands – home of puffins, seals and migratory birds galore.  It truly is stunning.   And then fill up on some local fare.  Northumberland is famous for smoked kippers and the best place to get them is the Robson smokehouse in Craster (which you’ll walk through if you visit Dunstanburgh Castle) – Kippers are actually a Northumberland breakfast delicacy, but they’re also excellent with some thick-cut brown bread, butter and served as a picnic on this stunning coast.

european places to visit 2023

Porto, Portugal

Porto is a beautiful city located in Portugal. Its unique location is right by the ocean but also by a river, so you have a lot of options for activities on the water. Take a boat cruise along the river and admire the many bridges that connect the two sides of the city. The Dom Luis Bridge is definitely the most impressive and has been compared to the Eiffel Tower with its unique architecture. Porto is divided in two by the river. The southern part is called Villa Nova de Gaia, which is where most of the Porto wine cellars are located. Come here to get free tastings of some of the world’s best port wine and enjoy a nice dinner by the water. Of course, like in any large city, Porto has a lot of scams that tourists frequently fall victim to. Be sure to research those before you go so you’re prepared. On a lighter note, definitely visit Porto’s famous blue churches – which are some of the most beautiful in the area. You also absolutely need to try the francesinha, a delicious sandwich which Porto is famous for. The restaurant Santa Francesinha is one of the best places to go for this delicacy.

The Vila Nova de Gaia is a great hotel to explore this wonderful city from!

Plan your weekend to Porto here .

Reykjavik, iceland.

Most people would skip over Reykjavik due to the cold weather, and just get exploring the wonderful nature of Iceland . The northernmost capital of the world is a wonderful mix of city and nature. You’ll want to spend a few days exploring Reykjavik before wandering through the rest of Iceland.

There are plenty of ways to spend a few days in Reykjavi k including whale watching, touring the famous Golden Circle, warming up in a hot spring, or even going inside the Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel! Taste the world-famous hot dog at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (literally translated to Best Hot Dogs in Town” and wash it down with some Brennivin, the local drink. Don’t forget to explore the Iceland Phallological Museum – featuring hundreds of penises and penile parts of animals from around the world (it’s the world’s largest display!)

One of the best things to do in Reykjavik is going searching for the Northern Lights. They’re most frequent in the winter months since it gets darker earlier. While you can travel north of the city for some incredible views, there is the Grotta Nature Reserve not too far from the city. Locals and tourists alike hope to see the sky light up!

Due to its perfect location for exploring all of Iceland, Reykjavik is a must-visit destination!

Rome, Italy

Rome, the Eternal City, was a city I wasn’t expecting to actually enjoy. I’m not a huge fan of history and I knew it would be really crowded. While there were a lot of tourists, and plenty of history, I did thoroughly enjoy the city. Rome has seen so much of the world’s history it’s impossible to not be impressed.

The breathtaking Colosseum , next to the Roman Forum is worth a visit. You must reserve a time to visit in order to control the number of people at the same time. While there are a number of tours you could do, Rick Steve’s has an awesome self-guided tour of the Colosseum so you can take your time! Within walking distance of the Colosseum is the Pantheon. It’s free to enter and is over 2,000 years old, On your way to the Pantheon, walk through the Jewish ghetto. There are an impressive number of places to eat in the area, but the real hidden gems are the gold placards remembering the victims of the Holocaust.

While you’re visiting Rome, head to Vatican City for a day. Be sure to cover your shoulders and knees – the dress code is enforced. This micro country has incredible art – including the Sistine Chapel. Take a guided tour through the Vatican so you can really understand the history and importance of each room. At the top of St. Peter’s Basilica, you can get a bird’s eye view of Piazza San Pietro.

If you stop at the Trevi fountain, throw a coin over your left shoulder. Legend has it that if you do that, you’ll be guaranteed to visit Rome again. Bonus, the money collected in the fountain is collected every night and donated to charity! Be sure to have Rome on your list to visit in 2023!

european places to visit 2023

San Marino, San Marino

One of the coolest places to visit in 2023 would have to be the oldest country in the world! San Marino is a micro country completely surrounded by Italy, and often overlooked by travelers! The capital city, San Marino, is in the heart of the country on the top of Monte Titano. At the top of the mountain, you’ll have (literally) breathtaking views of the Italian countryside that seem to go on forever.

The  best thing to do in San Marino is to explore the historic castle on the three peaks of Monte Titano.

Three medieval towers overlooking the entire city. The oldest of them, Guaita, is the largest and most popular. Spend some time walking through the rooms and imagining what life was like centuries ago! The second, Cesta, is home to a museum with thousands of weapons dating back to Medieval times. The third, Montale, is closed to the public.

While the country may be small, it boasts a number of museums that are worth a visit. The beautiful Basilica de San Marino and the National Museum can transport travelers back in time throughout history. Car lovers should visit the Maranello Rosso Ferrari Museum which has cars dating back to 1951 (and even one owned by Marilyn Monroe). For an off-the-beaten-path museum, visit the Torture Museum. It’s right across the street from Hotel Cesare – which is the perfect accommodation to explore the city from.

No matter what you decide to see in San Marino, you’ll be glad you visited this beautiful city in Europe.

european places to visit 2023

Stockholm, Sweden

The Scandinavian country of Sweden should be on every traveller’s bucket list! In the capital city of Stockholm you will find a unique mix of the old interspersed with the new.

The city itself is supported by an extensive public transport system (metro, bus, and tram network), but it is easy to explore on foot. The ‘old town’ of Gamla Stan is the ideal place to base yourself due to its close proximity to the major sights, and abundance of quirky coffee shops and fantastic restaurants. Enjoy lunch at the Jerusalem Kebab and Café and order the infamous Swedish Kebab Pizza. You won’t be sorry!

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to  things to see and do in Stockholm  city. There is something for everyone – scenic, historical, cultural, and fun. In the Gamla Stan area, there are a number of attractions including The Nobel Museum, The Swedish Royal Palace, and the Vasa Museum.

No trip to Stockholm is complete without a visit to the ABBA Museum which showcases their costumes and various memorabilia. If you are looking to have a bit of fun, visit Grona Lund, the oldest amusement park in Sweden.

However, if scenic views and nature are what you are looking for, hop on one of the numerous ferries and explore the Stockholm Archipelago which consists of charming villages and small coastal towns scattered amongst the 30,000 islands. The Radisson Blu Hotel has great waterfront views and the location is perfect for exploring!

european places to visit 2023

Tirana, Albania

Tirana, the capital of Albania is a fascinating mix of old and new. The country only opened its borders to the outside world in 1992 after 47 years of oppressive Stalinist isolation under dictator Enver Hoxha, and you can still see glimpses of Albania’s communist past in vast  Skanderbeg Square  (once a parade ground decorated with statues of Stalin and Hoxha), and the building that surrounds it – the white stone Palace of Culture looks like many of the Soviet-era buildings found in Russia; in fact, it was built in the 1960s as a gift from the Soviet people, and Nikita Khrushchev laid the first stone! On another side of the square, a vast mosaic in Socialist Realist style covers the front of the National Historical Museum.

Two other places you can’t miss in Tirana are:

Bunk’art II : a preserved nuclear bunker which is now a museum, with tunnels and rooms spreading far beneath the pavement. In the 1970s, Hoxha had hundreds of thousands of these bunkers built throughout the country! The exhibitions inside about the political persecution of Albanians by their own government are very moving, but we feel that it is important to learn about and remember the darker chapters of Albanian history.

Hajji Et’hem Bey Mosque : Built in 1819. Religion was banned under communist rule and many of the mosques in Tirana were destroyed or changed into secular buildings, so this beautiful mosque is seen today as a symbol of freedom. The inside is completely covered with gorgeous hand-painted frescoes of flowers and bridges, and next to the mosque is a 19th-century clock tower that you can climb for a small fee, for views over Skanderbeg Square.

If you would like to try traditional Albanian food with a modern flair, we would recommend Mullixhiu, an award-winning restaurant tucked away in the Grand Park of Tirana. They have an amazing tasting menu that will guide you through several iconic Albanian dishes such as Qifqi rice balls, meatballs, and trout.

We stayed in the Hotel Arber , a 3-star hotel 5 minutes walk from Skanderbeg Square with a bar and an excellent breakfast buffet.

european places to visit 2023

Valletta, Malta

At just 0.6 square kilometers, picturesque Valletta in Malta is the smallest capital city in the EU. And because of its small size, it’s perfect for walking and exploring. It may be small, but there’s a lot to see in this gorgeous UNESCO city. You definitely should visit the stunning St John’s Co-Cathedral to admire the Baroque art, discover the floor tombs of the Knights of St. John, and admire the incredible artwork by Caravaggio.

And while you are there, don’t forget to admire the views across the Grand Harbour from Upper Barrakka Gardens – be there at noon to enjoy the pomp and ceremony of the midday gun salute. But the best way to truly appreciate this city is to lose yourself in the streets and soak in the atmosphere.

Feeling hungry? Head to the charming and quirky Museum Cafe just a two-minute walk from the Cathedral for a light lunch.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with Aaron’s Kitchen. Reservations are recommended, especially at weekends.

For accommodation, there are several new boutique hotels popping up all over the city, but for timely elegance and great afternoon teas, choose The Phoenicia Hotel , located just by the main city gate. It’s a perfect base for exploring Valletta.

european places to visit 2023

Venice, Italy

Venice is a traveler’s dream – iconic gondolas on the water, gelato on every corner, and breathtaking architecture capture the eye at each glance. It’s almost impossible to not fall in love with Venice.

Even if you only have one day in Venice , you can see a lot! St. Mark’s Square is in the center of the city, making it a great place to start exploring. You’ll find the Campanile di San Marco, Doge’s Palace, and Basilica di San Marco in the heart of the plaza. You can visit all three of them within a few hours.

Getting lost among the winding alleys of Venice is a treat. Small shops featuring delicious food, Italian coffees, and souvenirs line the streets. Enjoy some afternoon cicchetti (similar to tapas in Spain), before taking an evening gondola ride. Seeing the city, including Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, on the water is something you’ll never forget.

The Relais Piazza San Marco is a wonderful accommodation in the heart of the city.

September is best time to visit Barcelona in Europe

Barcelona, Spain

By Claire from Why Visit Barcelona

September is a great time of year to visit Barcelona, a city in northern Spain on the Mediterranean Sea. It is still warm and sunny, but the crowds of tourists that surge into the city during the summer holidays start to subside. Barcelona is a city that has something for everyone, from sandy beaches to architecture, delicious food to nightlife and so much more. It is one of the best cities to visit in Europe in September.

The architectural designs of Gaudí are a huge draw, and you can’t come to Barcelona without touring at least one of his fantastical works , such as La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Güell or Casa Batlló, to mention a few.

Don’t miss exploring the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, with a maze of narrow streets, pretty squares, hidden churches, and local shops and bars.

La Rambla is one of the most popular destinations in Barcelona where you can wonder, shop, eat and soak up the energy of the city. Along the way, visit the Boqueria Market, a great place to grab a delicious snack or picnic to fuel your day. If you are curious about the local cuisine, take a walking tour with local tapas and wine guided by a local .

If you  visit Barcelona in September , you’ll also get to enjoy some fabulous local festivals. The 11 th  of September is the National Day of Catalonia ( La Diada Nacional de Catalunya ) and is marked with marches, flags and demonstrations for Catalan independence.

On September 24, La Mercé Festival is held. For several days, there is live music, traditional Sardana dancing, and human towers all celebrating the Roman Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Mercy. Other smaller neighbourhood festivals, also happen in September, so there is always a lot going on!

The average high in September in Barcelona is 78 degree Fahrenheit with several days in the mid 80s. In early September, it can be humid so if that bothers you, consider visiting after mid September.

How Best To Reach The Destination

Barcelona El Prat is the closest international airport to the city, around 30 minutes drive, or easily accessible by train or bus to and from the city centre.

Hotel Recommendation

Claire says, “There is a wide range of accommodation in Barcelona to suit every budget. Try the Chic & Basic Lemon Boutique Hotel for a budget option, or Hotel Serras Barcelona for a more luxury stay.”

best places to visit in Europe in September

Brno, Czech Republic

By Joanna from The World In My Pocket

Brno is the largest city in the Czech Republic in Eastern Europe. It is one of the best places to spend time in September in Europe. If you are looking to get away from the busy streets of Prague , Brno can give you a similar experience but without the crowds.

There are plenty of things to do in Brno, starting with exploring the Old Town, which has many hidden corners. Consider a visit to the Old Town Hall. First built in 1240, with buildings later added in the 15th, 16th and 18th century, it is the oldest surviving secular building in the city. It is home to several stunning points of interest, starting with the “Brno dragon” which hangs on its ceiling, the wheel which sits on the wall, and the crooked spires on the façade. In addition, you can climb up the 200 ft (63-metre) tower to enjoy an impressive view of Brno.

Next to the Town Hall, you will find the cabbage market, where local producers gather every day to sell the freshest fruits and vegetables, flowers, and artisan products.

If you are taking a  day trip to Brno , do not miss visiting Villa Tugendhat , viewed as a pioneering prototype of modern architecture in Europe. It was built in 1928 by German architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. Make sure you book your tickets in advance, as this is one of the more popular attractions, especially for architecture and history lovers. Make sure you leave time to visit the gardens as well.

Another great place to explore is Špilberk Castle which overlooks the city. Recently, a new exhibition opened which takes you inside the former water tanks of the castle.

The weather in Brno is quite mild, with plenty of sunny days and almost no rain, making September the best time to visit. The average high temperature in Brno is 67 degree Fahrenheit with lots of days in the mid to high 70s.

Located just two hours south of Prague, you can either fly to Brno, or take a bus or a train from the capital.

Joanna says, “A great hotel to stay when you visit Brno is the Best Western, which faces the Old Town on one side and the castle on the other.”

best cities to visit in September in Europe

Annecy, France

By Kat from France Voyager

Annecy in France is definitely one of the best destinations in Europe for a September vacation. This alpine town located in the southeastern part of France near the Swiss border is still warm, making it perfect for exploring. Moreover, the crowds start to thin out later in the month.

Annecy is known as the “Venice of France”. Take a walking tour and see one of the more beautiful places in Europe with its flower-lined canals that lead into the most stunning lake with mountains on the other side.

One of the best things to do in Annecy is rent a paddle boat and explore Lake Annecy. Enjoy the crystal clear waters as you tour, admiring the mountain views and perhaps sipping some Savoie wine from the region.

Another must-do is to visit the Old Town Market from 7 am-1 pm on Tuesday, Friday, and Sundays throughout the year. The market sprawls all over the charming Medieval old town and sells anything from fresh produce to delectable alpine cheeses and tasty nougat. It is well worth picking up plenty of tasty treats and enjoying them at a picnic at the scenic lake at the Jardin de l’Europe.

While exploring the old part of Annecy, be sure to also visit the Palais de l’Ile. Located in the middle of the Thiou Canal, this former administrative center and prison is now a little museum.

The weather in Annecy in September is quite pleasant with few rainy days compared to the rest of the year. The average high temperature is 69ºF with plenty of days in the mid to high 70s. You can expect around 8 days with some rain.

The best way to reach Annecy is to fly into Geneva and take the 1-hour train ride to town. Alternatively, you could fly into Paris and take a 4-hour train ride.

Kat says, “For a lovely place to stay between the train station and the old city, opt for Atipik Hotel Alexandra.”

best European city to visit in September

Porto, Portugal

By Marco from Travel-Boo

Porto, set in the northern region of Portugal ,is often overlooked by many first-time travelers to the country in favor of Lisbon, the capital, and the southern sandy beaches and towns of the Algarve. However, if you’re planning a September holiday in Europe, you may want to consider adding the gorgeous city of Porto to your travel itinerary.

Not only is Porto one of the most beautiful places in Europe featuring stunning old-world architecture, delicious Portuguese cuisine, and plenty of exciting attractions, it is also the gateway to the famous Douro Valley  wine region of Portugal , found 1.5 hours drive from the city.

The Douro Valley region is in full harvest from around mid-September. This is the best time to visit this part of the country with the changing colors of the vineyard leaves creating a colorful autumn tapestry across the rolling hills of the Douro. Book a tour and relax on a day trip into the region. If you can, try and visit towns such as Lamego and Pinhão.

Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about ever getting bored in Porto as there is a ton of exciting things to see and do.

Famed for its Port wine production, you can stroll across the city’s iconic Dom Luís I Bridge that connects Porto’s Ribeira riverfront to the Vila Nova da Gaia riverfront. Here you’ll stumble across a fine selection of the best Port Houses in the city for some Port wine tasting. These include Graham’s, Sandeman, Taylor’s, Kopke, and Porto Cruz to name a few. Alternatively, book a tasting tour .

Other key attractions in the city include the Livraria Lello bookstore where JK Rowling used to write when she lived in Porto. Many claim it inspired the well-known spiral staircase featured in many of her books.

Nearby you’ll find the Torre dos Clerigos church and tower. If you aren’t afraid of heights, consider climbing to the top of it for exceptional views of the city. If you prefer to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, then be sure to visit at 12:00 noon daily for a free organ concert.

A few other architectural gems that are also well worth a visit include the Palacio da Bolsa palace with an exquisite Arab-inspired room, as well as the entrance to the São Bento Station that features beautiful traditional blue and white tiled murals (called Azulejos).

Porto boasts a much milder temperature in September, around 75.4°F on average, compared to the southern parts of the country where temperatures can rise to blistering and sometimes unbearable levels.

Visitors can arrive by air to Porto’s International Airport which is connected by metro to the city center. If you are planning a visit to the capital, then a 3 hours train ride will connect you from Lisbon to Porto in comfort.

Marco says, “If planning an extended visit, plan a road trip, explore the Douro region and book yourself an overnight stay in a gigantic wine barrel room set in the vineyards of The Quinta da Pacheca estate.

best places to visit in September in Europe

Munich, Germany

By Jori from The Tejana Abroad

September is the best time to visit Munich for a late summer getaway. With cold weather on the horizon, but mild summer temperatures still lingering, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. In addition, the world renowned Oktoberfest Festival begins.

Take a walk around the city center, grab a pretzel, and see Marienplatz, the town hall that has been the center of the city since 1158. If you time your visit right, you can catch the show at the Glockenspiel, where little characters ring the bells at 11 AM, 12 PM, and 5 PM every day.

On the western side of the city, you can visit Nymphenburg Palace, one of many beautiful royal palaces in Germany. You can spend the afternoon exploring the gardens filled with art that has been modeled after the Palace of Versailles in France.

Alternatively, consider day trips and visit the famous Neuschwanstein castle , which some call the Snow White Castle. It’s a beautiful building with a postcard worthy view that is a must-see if you’re in the Bavaria region. The region is also great for hiking and September being the perfect time for it.

Finally, the absolute best reasons to visit Munich in September is Oktoberfest. Contrary to its name, the festival actually begins in September, with usually only one weekend in October. However, in October the cold becomes a bit unbearable to fully enjoy the festival, especially when you’re dressed in dirndls and lederhosen!

Tourists and locals alike dress in traditional Bavarian clothing and spend the day and night drinking beer in beer mugs the size of your face in Oktoberfest tents ! Most activities are held in makeshift tents and feature a band playing traditional German music. There is lots of Bavarian food too. For kids, there are many carnival rides and activities to enjoy.

In September, the average high temperature is around 66 degrees with several days in the low to mid 70s. You can expect around 10 days with some rain.

Getting to Munich is easy, as there’s an international airport. Otherwise, the city is well connected by train and by bus to other nearby cities such as Stuttgart and Salzburg, Austria.

Jori says, “When visiting Munich, try to stay in the Old Town or near the Munich Central Station, as most sights are within walking distance from there.

best cities to visit in September in Europe

Valletta, Malta

By Moumita & Sankha from Chasing The Long Road

The fortified city of Valletta is one of the main  tourist destinations in Malta  – an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. Due to the Mediterranean climate, the weather in Valletta remains quite warm and dry in September. That makes Valletta one of the best European destinations for a September trip.

Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful places in Europe. It is also the capital with a rich history. Accordingly, there are plenty of cultural and historical things to do in Valletta.

Take a tour of the streets of Valletta to marvel at the gorgeous architecture of this historic city. A visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral is an absolute must. Founded in the 16th century, the incredibly ornate interior is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Europe. Also, you will see some priceless masterpieces of art including two paintings by Caravaggio, including his largest and only signed masterpiece.

From the Upper Barrakka Gardens, admire the breathtaking panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the “Three Cities of Malta”, three fortified cities hundreds of years old. Visitors gather here to watch the ceremonial gunfire that takes place daily at noon and 4 pm.

Take day trips from Valletta to visit the stunning Blue Lagoon – a tropical beach paradise on the island of Comino. Spend the day sunbathing, swimming, cliff jumping or kayaking on the clear turquoise water.

In September, the island comes alive with live music from the Maltese Folklore Musical Festival and Qala International Folk Festival. For airplane enthusiasts, make sure you arrive in time to enjoy the Malta Airshow.

Average high temperature is 82°F, with several days in the high 80s. You can expect around 4 days with some rain and lots of humidity. Plan lots of time at the beach.

To best way to reach Valletta is to fly to Malta International Airport – the only airport on the island. From there, you can easily reach Valletta by public transport or pick up a rental car to be able to explore other parts of the island. It takes around 15 minutes to drive from the airport.

Moumita & Sankha say, “There are plenty of luxury and budget hotels dotted around Valletta. We would recommend staying at La Falconeria Hotel, which lies very close to the city centre.”

September is best time to visit Turin in Europe

Turin, Italy

By Natalie from The Best Of Turin

Turin is one of the best places to vacation among European countries at any time of year, but it’s pretty special spot in Europe for September vacations. Turin is located in Northern Italy and it’s the capital of the Piedmont region. What many people don’t know is that it was the first capital of Italy. Needless to say, it breathes a rich history, has incredible buildings and delicious food.

Turin and its surroundings have over 10 royal palaces and residences open for visitors, most of them are UNESCO World Heritage sites. In addition to exploring the royal palaces, make sure that you leave time to walk in the royal gardens.

The city sits at the foot of the Italian Alps, making it a great place for nature lovers. Once you are done with the city’s historical and cultural parts, you can venture into beautiful and steep Superga Hill. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the city or even hike in the Alps. In September, the foliage starts to change, making the city turn into a carpet of orange, red, and copper leaves. It’s magical.

Food is also another attraction in Turin. The region is known for the slow food movement and some traditional ingredients and dishes. Barolo wine, truffles, and chocolates are the most famous.

But Turin is also known as being the home of the Vermouth (Martini Vermouth only factory is located nearby the city). In addition, it has one of the biggest fresh markets in Europe. Make your way to Porta Palazzo for fruits and veggies, spices, nuts, and all the delicious things you can try in Italy.

In addition, ask the concierge at your hotel for the best local restaurant to try other Italian specialties. Alternatively, book a food tour and have someone guide you to all the best foods in the city.

September is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoor terraces while tasting the traditional aperitivo , drinks with finger food served in almost every bar and café. You will find some of the best aperitivos in Turin at San Salvario neighborhood, by the Pó River, and near the Turin Royal Palace.

The weather is fresh and warm with daytime temperatures around 75ºF and evenings dropping to 55ºF.

Turin-Caselle Airport receives flights from many European countries and internationally. The airport is connected to the city center by public transportation, making it easy to get in and out of the city.

Natalie says, “There are plenty of accommodation options. The list of the best hotels in Turin has suggestions for all types of travelers – from classy and royal experiences to modern and vibrant stays. The Royal Palace Hotel & Spa and Hotel DoubleTree by Hilton Turin Lingotto are among my favorite ones .

You can pick yours and enjoy a relaxing holiday or create days packed with things to do. That’s the beauty of Turin. The city has so much to see and do, but it also is an excellent place to wind down and have a nice break.”

Greek Islands are best places to spend time in Europe in September

Cyclades Islands, Greece

By Nicole from Go Far Grow Close

The Cyclades Islands in Greece are not only the most stunning Greek islands, but are arguably the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean. Created by volcanic eruptions, they are sprinkled around the blue turquoise waters of the Aegean sea. The island landscapes are often rocky cliffs and dramatic vistas, and the towns are charming usually with white-washed houses, brightly painted doors and gorgeous Bougainvillea flowers everywhere you look.

They are spectacular to visit at any time of the year because they are so naturally beautiful – but these Greek Islands are one of the best beach destinations in Europe in September because there are fewer crowds.

Crazy number of tourists are a serious problem during peak summer season in Santorini and Mykonos, the two most popular Greek islands in the Cyclades chain. But if you visit afterwards, you will avoid the worst of it and may also benefit from finding some lower prices.

When you are not swimming in the sea or sitting by the pool, you should focus on nature and enjoy the picturesque villages, and unique and interesting museums. Consider going to Santorini to see the epic volcanic caldera , Paros to enjoy the cute towns scattered about, or Delos to wander the ancient ruins.

Average highs in the Greek Islands will be 80 o  degrees Fahrenheit in September with many reaching the mid 80s. There is practically no rain in September. Avoid early September if you wish to avoid most humidity.

Berlin has a tumultuous history and there are several landmarks and museums in which you can learn more about its past.

Berlin was famously divided from 1969 to 1989 by the Berlin Wall. The purpose was to keep the residents on the eastern side under the control of theCommunist government. The East Side Gallery should also be included in your Berlin itinerary . A 1.3-kilometer section of the wall is now covered with more than 100 paintings from artists around the world.

Berlin’s Museum Island is another centerpoint of culture in the city. The island is home to five of the city’s best art museums in addition to the gorgeous Berlin Cathedral. Visit one (or all) of the museums to get your art fix and don’t miss climbing the Cathedral’s Dome for breathtaking views of the city.

You can also find some of Europe’s most famous landmarks in Berlin including Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Building, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Paris is always an amazing European destination any time of year. But Paris in the fall, particularly September, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

The weather is still nice and warm, but there are fewer tourists than during the summer months. You’ll find that many attractions have reduced prices or offer free entry on certain days of the month.

You won’t want to miss out on seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum (the most visited art museum in the world) or exploring the Medieval Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral (one of France’s most famous landmarks). Of course, you will have to try some delicious French cuisine like escargot and crème brûlée.

Other than these popular places, consider visiting Le Jardin des Plantes. This beautiful botanical garden has hundreds of plants and flower species from around the world.

Or if museums are more your thing, check out Musée de l’Ordre de la Libération, a museum celebrating combatants who have worked for the liberation of France. You will find many interesting exhibits on WWII among other things. Alternatively, consider visiting the Petit Palais, a beautiful building housing French art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Do go on a Seine river cruise in the evening ! Who could resist seeing Paris under glittering lights?

In September, make time to attend an outdoor live music festival such as The Dream Nation and the Peacock Society Festivals, both of which hosts the best electronic musicians in the world. In addition, look out for Paris Plages (The Paris Beach) when parts of Paris become fun beach settings.

As far as temperatures go, Paris experiences an average high of 71° F with several days in the high 70s. It rains for 5 days of the month. Pack a light cardigan for evenings, riverside walks and sightseeing cruises.

best vacation destinations to visit in Europe in September

Santiago de Compostela, Spain

By Milijana from World Travel Connector

Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in the far northeastern part of Spain (just above Portugal) is a top destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, spiritual seekers, and food aficionados.

The magnificent Old City of Santiago is a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stunning medieval town is the burial place of St James The Great, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and the saint patron of Spain. His remains are kept in the holy crypt in the incredible Cathedral of St James in Santiago de Compostela.

The tomb officially marks the end of the Camino de Santiago (St James Way), one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world. Religious, spiritual or not, visiting the Old City of Santiago and hiking Camino de Santiago are must-have experiences in Spain.

The Old City of Santiago de Compostela has some of the most beautiful Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassicist-style buildings in Spain. Strolling ancient cobbled streets of the 700-year-old Santiago de Compostela means stepping back to the incredible history of Spain.

The entire old city (Casco Historic) was built around St James Cathedral, and the outstanding Praza do Obradoiro square in front of the Cathedral. The architecture of the Old City will make your jaw drop. Join a walking tour in Santiago and enjoy the history and architecture.

One of the most beautiful places in Santiago is the 500-year old Alameda park with remarkable alleys, fountains, and sculptures. The park offers some of the best panoramic views of Santiago as it sits on the top of a hill. Go to Alameda Park and enjoy the spectacular views of the city from there.

Besides outstanding architecture, Santiago and Galicia are famous for mouthwatering Galician food, among which probably best known are pulpo alla Gallega (the Galician style octopus), zamburiñas (the Galician-style scallops), Tarta de Santiago (Cake of St James with almonds), and pimientos de Padron (fried and blistered small green peppers).

Book a food tour and crawl tapas bars in Santiago and sample tasty Galician food. Like in any country, city, and village, visiting local food markets always offers a unique perspective on local cultures. Head to Mercado de Abastos in Santiago, buy fresh local food, and observe local people and the customs.

The peak season for hiking the Camino is in July and August which means it is usually overcrowded. But the month of September is the best time to pack for and go to Camino de Santiago as it offers pleasant hiking and temperatures, and fewer crowds.

Daily average high temperatures are around 72ºF with several days reaching the low 80s. Expect around 6 days with some rain.

Santiago–Rosalía de Castro International Airport serves the city. The airport is only 12 km away from the city center. A bus leaves from the airport every 30 min. In addition, Santiago is well-connected by bus and train with Madrid (Spain), Lisbon and Porto (Portugal), only being 2 1/2 hours away.

Milijana says “Book a room at the 5-star luxury Hostel dos Reis Catholics for a memorable stay in Santiago. Catholic Monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabell stayed at this fabulous historic hotel on their pilgrimage to Santiago.”

Be sure to also visit Vatican City. This tiny country is home to some of the most famous religious sites in the world, including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. If you’re lucky, you may also be able to catch a glimpse of the Pope during his weekly address or one of his public appearances.

best places to visit in September in Europe

Saint-Tropez, France

By Eloise from My Favourite Escapes

The French Riviera is a great holiday spot in Europe in September as the crowds have left, but the temperatures are still lovely. Saint Tropez is particularly nice if you want a vacation that combines two experiences – spending time in a charming village in Provence and beach time on the Mediterranean.

The small town is very busy with tourists and celebrities in summer. It’s the fanciest beach destination in France, reputed for wild parties and big yachts in the harbour. The main road to Saint Tropez is often packed during peak season, making it frustrating to explore the nearby region with  beautiful villages  and lovely wineries.

But it really calms down in September, and the atmosphere changes to let visitors enjoy the beautiful town by the sea and the surrounding areas. Don’t miss the splendid views from the Citadel and try local products in the shops around the old town.

Restaurants, shops and museums are still open in September, and the weather is perfect for the beach. During the last week of September and the first week of October, the port of Saint Tropez fills with sailing boats and yachts for the festival “Les voiles de Saint-Tropez”, an exciting sailing regatta with lots of events and parties at sea as well as on land.

It’s still warm outside, with average high temperature of 77° Fahrenheit with several warmer days as well. The water temperature is, on average, around 71.6° Fahrenheit. The risk of rain is low at the start of the month but overall expect around 5 days with some rain.

Toulon/Hyeres Airport is the closest international airport (45 km away). However, more flights go to Nice (62.7 km) and Marseille (116.3 km).

Eloise says, “You need to book accommodation well in advance to stay in Saint Tropez, even in September. You may find an opportunity to treat yourself to superb villas and luxurious hotels inaccessible during the peak season.

For a memorable stay, have a look at The Cheval Blanc and Château de la Messardière. In addition, a room with sea views at La Bastide Du Port is one of the best values in Saint Tropez. If you’re looking for budget accommodation, you’ll have to stay in nearby villages as Saint Tropez is pretty pricey.”

Europe is packed with wonderful destinations in September. Wherever you go, you will find fantastic weather and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. In northern Europe, you will see leaves starting to change into fall colors and in the south, you will enjoy warm sunny days beckoning you to the gorgeous beaches. Whether you wish to discover ancient or Medieval ruins, hike through mountains, or dip your toes in the Mediterranean Sea, Europe offers some of the best destinations to visit in September in the world.

Best for: nature lovers December temperature range: 50-66°F

It’s easy to forget that Cyprus is only about 130 miles off the coast of Lebanon. And, unsurprisingly, its winter temperatures run closer to those of the Levant than much of continental Europe, which means T-shirt weather during the off-season. Winter is also a great time to go hiking in Cyprus’s dense forests, where you can stumble across fascinating Byzantine monasteries.

Where to stay: The seaside city of Paphos is a brilliant base for exploring the island and is home to many of the best hotels in Cyprus , including Almyra design hotel . In the north are some of the island’s prettiest beaches, where loggerhead and green turtles come to nest, along with the beachside Anassa hotel (closed 28 November to 31 March), located a short boat ride away from the Blue Lagoon.

Canary Islands

Best for: dyed-in-the-wool sun seekers December temperature range: 11-21°C

In summer, the breeze that hits Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is a blessed relief from the intense heat and a major draw for windsurfers. In winter, said breeze brings with it a bit of a chill, so you’re better off heading to the other Canary Islands : Tenerife or Gran Canaria . The former has made great strides in repositioning itself as a cultural hub with an art gallery designed by Swiss firm Herzog and de Meuron and Santiago Calatrava’s concert hall in Santa Cruz. And the latter has plenty of charm beyond the overdeveloped tourist spots. The capital, Las Palmas, has a lively food scene and the landscape, particularly around the village of Artenara, is manna for hikers. Flights to both islands from London are under four and a half hours.

Where to stay: In Las Palmas, Bed and Chic is a cool 12-room hotel reminiscent of the Ace Hotel look, but without the pretension. On Tenerife, Hotel San Roque , is a pretty 18th-century manor house where dining and lounging take place around the turquoise courtyard pool.

Best for: thrill-seekers (but still good for pensioners, too) December temperature range: 59-68°F

The long-time destination of choice for Britain’s blue-rinse brigade, staid old Madeira has been busy reinventing itself as a place for adrenaline-fueled adventure. And why not? The island is an outdoor Eden in miniature, with black-sand beaches, tumbling canyons, and epic rock faces. Which means great mountain biking and wonderful views for those who dare to go paragliding. The network of levadas (water-irrigation channels carved into the volcanic island) makes for thrilling trail running. It is also, as far as we know, the only place to offer year-round urban tobogganing in wicker sledges, which are steered downhill at great speed.

Where to stay: The island's most famous hotel is Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel —a pink cliffside palace with a Michelin-star and stunning ocean pool. If you're traveling in a group, Okulus sleeps eight, and thanks to its curated interiors, is easily the coolest villa in Madiera.

The Algarve, Portugal

Best for: getting away from it all December temperature range: 48-64°F

Continental Europe’s most south-western region has its own sunny microclimate that makes it consistently warmer than the rest of Portugal. You won’t be in a bikini in winter, but the pleasant T-shirt temperatures mean that an increasing number of hotels and restaurants stay open year-round, and cities such as Albufeira retain a buzz. Away from the package tourist haunts, there are dramatic red-cliff coastlines and Moorish villages dotted among the hills to explore.

Where to stay: Enjoy a tranquil escape to Casas da Quinta de Cima , where a series of nine little cottages sit on a serene farm estate in rural eastern Algarve. For something more grand, reserve a room at Bel Vista , a turn-of-the-century villa hotel with a swimming pool framed by slender palm trees, a L’Occitance Spa and a one-star Michelin restaurant by Chef João Oliveira. See our pick of the best hotels in the Algarve for more options.

Athens, Greece

Best for: culture seekers December temperature range: 49-59°F

Perhaps surprisingly, the Greek capital stays much warmer than many places on the country’s salty-aired coastline once winter rolls in. All the better for those who want a slice of sunshine without being marooned on a beach somewhere. Athens is a classic city-break destination, but an influx of artists, chefs and hoteliers over the past few years means the quirky neighborhoods and must-visit restaurants are now as much a draw as the big-hitting sites. Spend days exploring the many museums, libraries and galleries—we particularly like the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which is home to the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and a 42-acre park.

Where to stay: For a room with a view, some suites at xenodocheio Milos have huge terraces overlooking the old Parliament. If you're here for some sun and food, Ergon House is more than just a restaurant with rooms – the ground floor is a perpetually buzzy deli, roastery, bakery and dining room. See our pick of the best hotels in Athens for more.

The Greek Islands

Best for: open-water swimmers December temperature range: depending on which island you're on, temperatures range from 54-63°F

The gorgeous Aegean is surely the loveliest of Europe’s seas, and the water of many of the Cyclades, such as Paros, Santorini , and Milos , is still tolerable in winter, making it a year-round destination for swimmers. In places like Santorini, visiting in the off-season means you can explore the picturesque vistas without the crowds, while Rhodes is known to have clear blue skies and warm temperatures well into winter.

Where to stay: Many Greek Island hotels close their doors between the end of October and the start of May, but there are a handful that continue to welcome guests. On Santorini, Opsis Cave Houses are one of the properties in Oia that still welcomes guests. Best of all, the views are entirely uninterrupted across the glittering blue sea.

Best for: eco-conscious adventurers December temperature range: 55-64°F

You might think that including the Azores is stretching the definition of Europe to breaking point, but the Atlantic archipelago is actually about five hours from London . And, in any case, they’re not your typical isolated island group. For starters, it’s never that hot here, even in summer. People don’t visit to laze on the beach Maldives-style. They come because it’s a natural nirvana, rich in wildlife, full of rugged, dramatic craters and caverns, hot springs and lush forests. All of which are being sustainably managed: only 5 per cent of the land is developed, and the islands are dotted with marine conservation parks.

Where to stay: Stay at Santa Barbara Eco-Beach or the similarly green-minded Sete Cidades Lake Lodge , both on São Miguel. See our Azores hotels guide for more.

Best for: design buffs and hotel obsessives December temperature range: 52-63°F

Its frankly ridiculous 300 days of sunshine a year would be the standout selling point for most islands of Malta’s size, but the understated Mediterranean gem is also a history-soaked gastronomic hub, packed with first-class hotels and surrounded by some of the world’s best diving sites. Visit in winter for a weekend exploring striking Valletta, the ancient capital that’s had a bit of a revival of late, converting some of its gorgeous townhouses into excellent design hotels. The restaurant scene is thriving, too. Head to Panorama at the British Hotel in Valletta or Barracuda near the Sliema coast for a taste of traditional Mediterranean food.

Where to stay: Domus Zamittello in Valetta is a restored baroque masterpiece by the bombed-out opera house, with painted coffered ceilings. Iniala Harbour House offers a front-row seat to the Grand Harbour across its four smartly renovated townhouses.

Best for: adventurous foodies December temperature range: 52-63°F

Italy’s southernmost island is closer to Tunis than Rome and has winter weather to match. Visiting at this time of year allows you to get up close to Sicily’s incredible historic spaces, such as the Temple of Concordia in Agrigento, which is reliably overrun in high season. With a distinct food culture, Sicily has gastronomic delights beyond summer’s glut of glorious fruit and veg – visit in February to experience the sea urchin season in full swing.

Where to stay: Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo is Sicily's grand dame hotel, with opulent marble bathrooms and a pianist that cajoles couples to dance on the elegant balcony overlooking Amalfi-style Taormina. We also love Agriturismo trailblazer Monaci Delle Terre Nere , one of the region's smartest and most stylish country hotels. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Sicily .

Best for: stop-and-flop and families December temperature range: 50-61°F

Straddling two continents, Turkey’s enormous landmass is diverse enough to justify its nickname: the land of four seasons. For winter sun, the best part of the country to visit is, predictably, the south coast, particularly the area around Antalya. There’s a long stretch of fairly upmarket hotels to the west of the city, many of which are family-friendly entertainment retreats in their own right, with golf courses and adventure playgrounds beside the beach. On Turkey’s wilder southwest coast, there’s the pretty city of Bodrum and lovely Didyma with its astonishing ruined temple.

Where to stay: For an authentic low-season experience, check into one of the pansiyon guesthouses dotted across the city. Owners will enthusiastically share their recommendations for a city that dies down considerably compared to summer. For something more private, check into Kalkan's Villa Pairidaeza —where the sunsets need to be seen to be believed.

Seville Spain

Seville, Spain

Best for: Sun-soaked city exploration December temperature range: 46-63°F

Year-round direct flight routes and mild temperatures make Seville the perfect choice for travelers searching for some mid-winter vitamin D. Ditch the Michelin-man coats in favor of light jackets and utilise the sunny conditions for pictures of the magnificent Plaza de España, al fresco lunches along the winding alleyways that siphon off Plaza Pumarejo, and afternoon drinks under blue skies atop Hotel Doña María. Head to Seville between the last week of November and the end of December to pick up handmade crafts and sweet treats from the Christmas markets .

Where to stay: The hottest stay in the sunny city right now is Nobu Hotel and Restaurant Sevilla , having opened its doors in spring 2023. Set in the Plaza de San Francisco, the 25-room property is ideally located for experiencing all the city offers over a long weekend. Admire the cathedral and surrounding rooftops from the terrace, and sample fresh seafood sashimi dishes in the sleek signature restaurant.

The French Riviera

Best for: Low-season glitz December temperature range: 43-61°F

Granted, you won’t be donning swimwear on Plage des Ponchettes or spotting A-listers in Nice 's beach clubs come December. However, with up to nine hours of sunshine a day, the winter months are ideal for exploring Nice and the surrounding French Riviera towns—without the crowds that flock here each summer. Check out the Christmas village at Place Massena in Nice, spot the pop-up nativity scenes around the city, or pop to glitzy Monaco for a lavish lunch and glide around the ice rink.

Where to stay: Anantara Plaza Nice is a luxe urban oasis centrally located for sightseeing and sunny lunches along the promenade. There’s a glamorous rooftop terrace for sea views and destination restaurants ideal for those occasional rainy nights.

12 Things That Are Different About Driving In North America Vs. Europe

  • In Europe, speed cameras are labeled to warn drivers, unlike in America where they often remain hidden.
  • There are more law enforcement officials monitoring roads in the US, increasing the chance of receiving a ticket for reckless driving.
  • Getting a driver's license in Europe is more difficult and requires extensive training, while in the US it is relatively easier.

In terms of standards of living and lifestyle, North America and Europe are quite similar to each other. Yet, if you are an American in Europe or vice versa, you may find some differences when getting behind the wheel. The reason for this is the entirely different set of rules for driving in both places. Once you learn the rules and adapt to the changes, driving and exploring other countries can be an incredible experience. There are scenic routes throughout the US and Europe, all of which should be seen by travelers.

RELATED: 10 Of The Most Beautiful Train Journeys In North America

Here are some things that are different about driving in North America Vs. Europe. Make sure to acquaint yourself with the driving rules if you are planning to visit any of these magnificent destinations.

UPDATE: 2023/10/21 17:59 EST BY NOAH STAATS

Two More Ways That The USA Differs From Europe When Driving

This article has been updated with two extra reasons why Europe and the United States are different for those on the road, including enhanced law enforcement in the US and proper signage for speed traps in Europe versus America. Good luck, and drive carefully!

Europe Labels Its Speed Traps; America Doesn't Always

  • Speed cameras will be labeled in Europe to warn drivers.

Unlike many American cities, which depend on traffic cameras to surprise rule breakers, Europe tries to focus on warning people to slow down in certain corridors. It's much more common in Europe to see a sign warning of an oncoming camera or 'speed trap,' while only some cities/states regulate this to the point of adding signage.

Some prefer the secret speed traps to punish law-breaking drivers, although the general consensus is that signage should be present in front of one.

There Are State Troopers AND Police Monitoring Roads In The US

  • The USA uses state troopers and local police to monitor streets and highways.

Another somewhat surprising thing that's different between European roads and those in the US is that in America, state troopers and local police will monitor roadways. There is essentially double the chance someone can be ticketed for reckless driving or speeding, making tickets much more prevalent in the United States.

Europe also uses local law enforcement to ticket speeding drivers and rule breakers, but not at the level of state troopers. There are more eyes on you and your car in the USA.

And for those who don't want to drive in Europe, these sleeper trains are worth it .

Obtaining A License

  • It is often more difficult to get a driver's license in Europe than in the US.

The first and most essential requirement for driving in any part of the world is undeniably the driver’s license. The process to get a license is more difficult in Europe than it is in North America. In Europe, specifically in Germany, it’s mandatory to go through extensive training, including theory and a first aid course, before you start with the practical driver’s training. Unlike some destinations that don't require passports , both Europe and the US require them. That's the same for driver's licenses.

RELATED: 10 Places Around The World That Are Insanely Difficult To Drive Through

The course can take as long as six months to be completed. Taking an arduous written and practical exam is the final step to obtaining the license. If you plan to drive in Europe during your vacation or official trip, you may be required to get an International Driver's Permit.

This post on enhanced driver's licenses versus passports is worth reading for US travelers.

Rules Of Driving

  • In the United States, you can turn on red (right), while this is not allowed in Europe.

A notable difference between US and European rules of driving is turning on red lights. In North America, you’re often allowed to turn right on red lights as long as there’s no oncoming traffic. However, in Europe, you are required to stop at the red lights even if there is no traffic in the area. This rule often confuses European drivers in America. Furthermore, the rule to keep rights unless passing is very strictly followed in Europe. Most European countries follow the rules of priority to the right at an intersection. In contrast, in North America, they more commonly yield right away, meaning whoever arrives first goes first. Unlike Europe, in the US, many intersections have four stops with priority to the first vehicle.

Speed Limit

  • There are certain areas in Europe (like Germany) with lax speed limits.
  • Speed limits are more enforced in the United States.

If you love driving cars really fast, even to the office, then Europe might be the place for you. The autobahn in Germany has no speed limits. The German traffic authorities, however, recommend a speed of no more than 130km/h on the autobahn, and it does require you to be extra cautious while driving. The speed limit in other European countries ranges from 90km/h to 130km/h, which is quite a bit higher than the standard limit in America. There is only a single stretch tollway in Texas where the maximum speed limit allowed is 140km/h. Driving too fast in the US will result in a pricey ticket.

  • Larger cars are more common in the USA, while compact vehicles are more popular in European countries.

SUVs are slowly taking over sedans in the United States, including hybrid and electric versions. Even luxury pick-up trucks are a common sight in the US. Europe, on the other hand, is famous for its compact cars on their roads. There has also been an uptick in eco-friendly small electric cars that can be charged in parking lots. These small cars are a convenient mode of transport in Europe as the roads are narrow in comparison to the wide lanes often found in the US. Many Europeans prefer smaller and more compact cars as parking can be a lot tighter, and the smaller cars can help find an elusive spot.

Roundabouts

  • There are not nearly as many roundabouts in Europe versus the US.

The Roundabout is a circular intersection designed to permit the flow of traffic to travel smoothly in one direction. It’s a highly effective way to keep traffic moving safely. Having said that, if you are not familiar with driving through roundabouts, it can be a cause of major confusion and likely cause some anxiety.

RELATED: 10 Haunted Highways That Will Make You Want To Drive Faster

While there are roundabouts in the US, they are not as prevalent as in Europe. While vacationing, many US drivers in Europe frequently run into trouble when they encounter roundabouts which have a massive presence throughout the roads of Europe. Driving through the roundabouts takes a little practice, but they are a great way to keep traffic moving.

Sights On The Way

  • Much of Europe's roads wind through historical landmarks.

Almost every street in Europe is rife with history. If you are lucky enough to travel to Europe, you are bound to catch a glimpse of historical buildings, and you might even see a castle in your car. Historical sights and architecture will be sure to provide beautiful views. North America, on the other hand, is filled with a vast variety of beautiful landscapes that make the trip just as compelling as the destination. There are many breathtaking scenic drives for whatever suits your mood; mountains, surf, woodlands, or desert. In the fall, there are many states in the US where you can enjoy the colorful changing of the leaves.

These scenic fall drives in New Hampshire are perfect for leaf peeping.

Process Of Fueling Up

  • Gas tends to be more expensive in Europe than in North America.

Gas is more expensive in Europe than in North America, and the process of fueling can be different depending on what country you are visiting. European gas stations encourage self-service, and you are required to fill your tank by yourself. The payment can be done at the cash counter, although some stations have automated payment kiosks. Gas stations are similar in the US, although some places may require you to pay before you pump your gas. Although many pumps have credit card readers on the pump for convenience or allow you to pay in the store. Signs are typically posted on the pump to alert patrons of the correct payment procedure.

These cheap airlines flying to Europe can help cut down on costs .

Traffic Lights

  • Traffic lights in Europe are located near the side of an intersection, while the US has them in the middle (above) of the road.

A crucial part of every main road is traffic lights. They help to maintain a steady flow of traffic and keep drivers safe. How traffic lights are positioned might not be something you typically notice, but there is a difference between Europe and the US. In Europe, the lights are located on the near side of the intersection, which will require you to bend your neck to see it. Because of this, it is important to stop the car far enough back in order to get a clear view of the lights. On the contrary, the lights are conveniently placed after the intersections in America.

Traffic Fines

  • Traffic fines, although a burden everywhere, tend to be much greater in Europe.

Traffic fines are universally loathed by drivers across the globe, but some countries make the experience worse by penalizing rule-breakers with hefty amounts. Norway , in Europe, is ranked as the most expensive place to get a ticket, with a $768 dollar fine for speeding. Several other European countries like Sweden, Italy, and Iceland also make the list of the top 10 most expensive countries for speeding. The US ranks 25th in this list with a fine of $70 . However, it must be noted that the severity of breaking the speed limit also depends on the state that you are driving in.

Traffic Signs

  • Traffic signs have a different look in Europe than in the US.

One of the biggest differences between driving in Europe and North America is the traffic signs. Most of the countries in Europe follow the guidelines created by the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals. In the United States, the road signs follow federally regulated standards, most notably the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Although both systems work towards the common goal of ensuring road safety, the signage appearance is quite different... For instance, warning signs in America are represented by a yellow diamond, whereas the same is represented in Europe by triangular signs with a red border.

Safest Countries in the World 2024

Iceland has been the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row, according to the Global Peace Index.

The Nordic countries of Europe (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland) rank among the 25 safest globally, most of them also being among the top 10 happiest nations worldwide.

Common attributes of the world's safest countries include high levels of wealth, social welfare, education, effective criminal justice systems, and positive government-citizen relationships.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. This report is published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which defines itself as "an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to shifting the world's focus to peace as a positive, achievable and tangible measure of human wellbeing and progress." The report researches countries to determine which are the safest and which are the most dangerous .

A total of 163 countries are featured in the GPI report, which ranks each country's level of safety or danger based upon 23 different indicators. The indicators used to compile the GPI include the number of internal and external violent conflicts, level of distrust, political instability, potential for terrorist acts, number of homicides, and military expenditures as a percentage of GDP. These indicators are grouped into three broad categories—Ongoing International Conflict, Societal Safety and Security, and Militarization—and a score is calculated for each of the 163 nations featured in the report. The lower the score, the higher the nation is ranked in terms of safety.

Top 15 Safest Countries in the World (Global Peace Index — lower is better):

The United States ranked 129th in the Global Peace Ranking for 2022. The United States' ranking has fallen every year since 2016, a drop usually attributed to a decrease in life satisfaction, rising political division, and an increasing wealth gap.

Is the World Becoming More or Less Safe?

According to the 2022 GPI report, the world has become less safe over the past 14 years, with per-country scores deteriorating by 3.2% on average. The report further notes that safety and peacefulness have decreased for eleven of the past fourteen years. For example, global peace declined by 0.3% overall between the 2021 and 2022 GPI reports. While safety improved in 90 countries, it dropped in 71 countries (and remained stable in two), for a net loss.

The 2022 report also states that declines tend to happen more swiftly and precipitously than do improvements, and pointed out that the most significant deterioration occurred in countries in conflict, such as Russia , Ukraine , Guinea , Burkina Faso , and Haiti . Europe remained the most peaceful region in the world, a position it has held for all the 16 years in which the Global Peace Index has existed.

World peace also decreased between the 2020 and 2021 reports, though by a much smaller margin of 0.07%, with 87 countries improving and 73 deteriorating. The COVID-19 crisis and increasing tensions among major world powers were cited as two main causes for the decrease. A comparison of the 2020 and 2019 reports, to step back a year, reveals a total of 81 countries growing more peaceful and 80 deteriorating. The average country score deteriorated by 0.34%.

The Safest Continent in the World

A majority of the top 25 safest countries are European countries. Most notable are the Nordic countries of Europe. Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Iceland , and Finland are not only among Europe's safest countries , they are among the top 25 safest countries anywhere on Earth. This region is thus considered the safest in the world, with a homicide rate of 0.8 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants. These five Nordic countries are all in the top 10 happiest countries in the world as well. The second-safest region among the top 25 safest countries is Asia . Both Europe and Asia have the world’s lowest homicide rates of 3 or fewer per 100,000 inhabitants.

Qualities the World's Safest Countries Have in Common

There are some commonalities among the safest countries in the world. For instance, safe countries tend to display high levels of wealth, social welfare, and education. Additionally, safe countries typically have effective criminal justice systems and governments that maintain very healthy relationships with their citizens.

Profiles of the World's 10 Safest Countries

According to the Global Peace Index, Iceland is the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row. Iceland is a Nordic nation with a relatively small population of 340,000. Iceland has a very low level of crime, which is typically attributed to its high standard of living, small population, strong social attitudes against crime, a high level of trust in its well-trained police force, and a lack of tension among social and economic classes. Iceland has no military, and the police do not carry firearms (only extendable batons and pepper spray). Iceland also has laws in place to guarantee equality, such as legal same-sex marriage and same-sex adoptions, religious freedom, and equal pay for men and women.

2. New Zealand

New Zealand is the second-safest country in the world. Like Iceland, New Zealand has a very low crime rate, and violent crime is especially rare. Theft is still worth guarding against, especially in tourist areas (which holds true in every country in the world), but overall risk is minimal. Unlike its neighbor Australia , which is known for its dangerous wildlife (box jellyfish, taipan snakes, stonefish, funnel web spiders, and more), New Zealand has no deadly animals. New Zealanders are generally open-minded and have laws in place to prevent the violation of anyone's freedom of speech or expression. As in Iceland, police in New Zealand do not carry personal firearms.

Ireland became notably more peaceful in 2021 and vaulted from 11th place to 3rd in the 2022 rankings as a result. Crime is quite low outside of a few city neighborhoods ( as in any country, one should be wary of pickpockets and scammers in tourist-dense areas), and there is little threat of cultural violence or terrorism. In fact, the Irish landscape may pose a greater safety risk than its people—the country's breathtaking cliffs and winding country roads must be treated with respect, especially during a sudden rainstorm or in areas with no cell reception.

Ranked fourth on the 2022 Global Peace Index, Denmark is another one of the safest and happiest countries in the world. Denmark is one of the few countries where people report feeling safe at any time of day or night, even children. Denmark has a high level of equality and a strong sense of common responsibility for social welfare — two qualities that contribute to its citizens' feelings of safety and happiness.

Corruption is rare in Danish business or politics, as honesty and trust are top priorities. While Denmark has a high personal income tax , it funds social programs that ensure all people receive services and perks that help them live comfortable lives. For example, everyone in Denmark has access to tuition-free higher education and healthcare with no additional fees to them, and the elderly are provided at-home care helpers.

Austria ranked as the fifth-safest country in the world for 2022. While violent demonstrations in the wake of ongoing social unrest remain a concern, these are relatively easy to avoid, and otherwise, Austria is a very safe country to visit. Serious crimes are uncommon (with the usual caveat to watch for pickpockets and purse-snatchers). Additionally, Austria has been spared any major acts of terrorism in recent years.

6. Portugal

Portugal comes in sixth in the most peaceful countries rankings for 2022. In 2014, Portugal was ranked 18th globally and has since made significant strides. Unlike Iceland and New Zealand, Portugal has armed police; however, an increased police presence has resulted in a decreased crime rate in the country. In recent years, Portugal has experienced an economic resurgence, decreasing its unemployment rate from over 17% to under 7%. Portugal consistently ranks among the best countries for retirement , due in no small part to its high level of safety.

7. Slovenia

One of the former constituents of Yugoslavia , Slovenia has a high safety ranking that can be attributed to its excellent scores in three categories: travel security, medical risks, and road safety. Like many Slavic states , Slovenia installed a democratic government in the mid-1990s and is now focused on improving quality of life in many areas, including safety and sustainability.

8. Czech Republic

Crime rates in the Czech Republic have steadily decreased over the years, with rates of violent crime in particular dropping significantly. The Czech Republic also has a low incidence of terrorism and natural disasters. Finally, the country boasts many clean and efficient hospitals and a state-run health insurance system that offers affordable rates and enables near-universal coverage.

9. Singapore

Singapore ranks ninth on the GPI for 2022. In a Gallup report from 2018, Singapore residents felt the highest sense of personal security and had more positive experiences with law enforcement than did residents of any other country. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, possibly due to the severe penalties that are issued for even small crimes. The government and police strictly control guns and other firearms, and violent and confrontational crimes are rare in Singapore.

As a city-state, Singapore also ranks as the second- safest city in the world according to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). In 2019, Singapore ranked first for infrastructure security and personal security, second for digital security, and eighth for health security.

The tenth-safest country in the world for 2022 is Japan. Japan has been in the top ten countries in the Global Peace Index for 14 years, consistently receiving high marks for low crime rates , minimal internal conflict, and virtually nonexistent political unrest. Japan's proximity to potentially hostile neighbors China and North Korea could become a threat to its safety at some point, but has not thus far.

Japan is known for citizens having limited access to firearms, as the Japanese do not view carrying a firearm as an individual's right. According to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Tokyo was the safest city in the world in 2019, ranking first in cybersecurity, second for health security, and fourth for infrastructure security and personal security.

IEP applies a rigorous research process to arrive at its GPI rankings. According to IEP , “The GPI covers 163 countries comprising 99.7 percent of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources.”

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.

When is the first 2024 presidential debate between Trump and Biden? Date, time, moderators, how to watch

President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will face off for their first debate of the 2024 election cycle later this month.

CNN, the host of the June 27 debate in Atlanta , recently released additional rules: Both candidates' microphones will be muted until it is their turn to speak, and they won't be allowed to interact with campaign staff during the two commercial breaks.

Trump and Biden skirted the  Commission on Presidential Debates and opted for earlier debates this year. The second debate is scheduled for Sept. 10, hosted by ABC.

Here is everything you need to know about watching the first presidential debate:

The first debate will be held on June 27, 2024.

What time is the presidential debate?

The CNN Presidential Debate will begin at 9 p.m. ET.

How can I watch the first debate between Trump and Biden?

CNN will host the first election debate between the two candidates in its Atlanta studio.

The debate will air live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max.

For those without a cable subscription, the debate will be streaming on CNN.com , the network said in a news release.

Who are the moderators for the first Biden-Trump debate?

CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the debate.

Who is eligible to participate in the debates?

To qualify for participation, candidates must meet the following criteria, according to CNN:

  • "Fulfill the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution
  • "File a Statement of Candidacy with the Federal Election Commission
  • "A candidate's name must appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold to win the presidency prior to the eligibility deadline
  • "Agree to accept the rules and format of the debate
  • "Receive at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters that meet CNN's standards for reporting."

It is unlikely that independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.  will meet the requirements to participate in the debate.

Tonight Biden and Trump will have their first debate of 2024. Here’s what you need to know

Biden and Trump will debate on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know

Left: U.S. President Joe Biden speaks at an event marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in the East Room at the White House on June 18, 2024 in Washington, DC. Right: Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event at 180 Church, Saturday, June 15, 2024, in Detroit.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election tonight in Atlanta .

It begins a new phase of the presidential race, less than five months out from Nov. 5, Election Day, as the matchup remains extremely tight. Biden and Trump stand virtually tied, according to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll , which echoes a months-long trend of recent national surveys.

The debate also breaks with campaign tradition, occurring months earlier than usual and with a new set of rules both candidates have agreed to, including no live audience. It’s also the first debate either candidate has participated in this campaign season. Biden largely ran unopposed, and Trump notably skipped the GOP primary debates.

Former President Donald Trump and now-President Biden, as seen on television during the Oct. 22, 2020 presidential debate. Their first debate this year airs on Thursday on CNN.

How Biden is getting ready for his high-stakes debate with Trump

Here’s what you need to know about this first debate.

When and how to watch

The event starts at 9 p.m. ET and will run for 90 minutes. It will be moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and take place at the network’s studios in Atlanta.

The debate will be available on CNN and the streaming platform Max, formerly known as HBO. Viewers without a cable login can watch on CNN’s website .

NPR will be providing live on-air special coverage of the CNN Presidential Debate Simulcast. Plus, you can follow NPR’s live blog for updates and analysis during the debate.

Who will be there?

Biden and Trump are the only presidential candidates who qualified for the debate stage.

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to meet the threshold , which required candidates to poll at 15% or higher in four national surveys and appear on enough state ballots that could theoretically push them past the needed 270 Electoral College votes to secure the presidency.

How is this debate different from those in the past?

Typically, presidential debates occur in front of a live audience, often in an event space on a college or university campus, and are coordinated by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD).

At the presidential debate on Sept. 29, 2020, in Cleveland, then-President Donald Trump stands on the left side of the stage, and then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden stands on the right side. Debate moderator Chris Wallace, then with Fox News, is seated in front of the stage, facing the two candidates.

As Trump takes to the debate stage Thursday, his signature style may be muted

But not this year. Both candidates have said they will not participate in the CPD’s previously scheduled and announced debates, lobbying for earlier matchups .

Instead, Biden and Trump will take part in tonight’s debate on CNN and then a second in September hosted by ABC News.

Biden and Trump have agreed to the following rules :

  • Microphones will be muted unless a candidate is directed to speak.
  • Candidates are not allowed to bring prewritten notes or props. They will receive a pen and paper, as well as a bottle of water.
  • A coin toss determined podium positions and the order of closing statements. According to CNN, Biden’s campaign won the coin toss and chose the podium to the viewers' right. As a result, the Trump team chose to deliver the final closing statement of the evening.

What to watch for

Candidates will likely speak to recent respective legal dramas. The debate comes about a month after Trump was found guilty of 34 criminal charges in New York, becoming the first U.S. president in history to be convicted of felony crimes. Biden’s son, Hunter, who is not running for office, was convicted on felony gun charges in Delaware in mid-June and faces a second federal trial in September over failing to pay his taxes.

Biden will also likely address concerns over his age and ability to serve a second term. At 81, he is the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, and if elected for a second term, he would exit office at 86.

While the president has had public slipups throughout his first term, Trump, who is 78, has repeatedly criticized Biden’s mental ability , most recently speculating he should take a cognitive test. In that same speech, Trump incorrectly named the doctor who conducted his own cognitive exam while president.

On the issues, it’s expected the candidates will discuss the state of the economy and immigration policy, as both are consistently top issues for voters in national polling. It’s also possible the candidates will weigh in on international politics, given voters remain divided on whether the U.S. should be sending military aid to Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars.

The debate may also be an opportunity for Biden to address his decreasing support, when compared to 2020, among key parts of his base, notably Blacks and Latinos and young voters .

Trump is losing some ground among older voters, and the Biden campaign is trying to capitalize on that . Plus, the former president may still need to repair relations with Nikki Haley supporters who remain uncertain about backing him again.

What's next?

Trump will likely announce his pick for vice president in the coming weeks. There will also be a vice presidential debate this summer. The date has not been finalized, but Vice President Harris agreed to one held on either July 23 or Aug. 13.

On the legal front, Trump will appear for sentencing in his criminal trial on July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15 in Milwaukee. A month later, the Democratic National Convention will kick off on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Trump and Biden will debate for a second time on Sept. 10.
