Introduction

Devkund Waterfall is a hidden gem of the Sahyadris, located 130 kilometres from Mumbai. It's also known as the 'Virgin Waterfall' since it was previously unknown to the rest of the world until it became popular on social media. It's a stunning convergence of three waterfalls that cascade down from a height of 80 feet into a deep 30-meter-wide pool. The river Kundalika is said to have its origins here.

It is a year-round waterfall that pours a large volume of water onto the rocks underneath it. Aside from that, the location has religious importance. Devkund is made up of two words: "Dev" and "kund," which means "Gods' Bathing Pond."

The three-hour trek is jam-packed with surprises. You'll be surrounded by massive mountains, thickly verdant woods, a clear blue sky, the sound of streams, and the sight of gorgeous birds on this walk. It will lead to a plethora of uncharted territory. Tamhini Ghat is seen when you stroll alongside Bhira Dam.

The nicest aspect is that it is a low-difficulty hike that everyone can do. The path is filled with wonders that will encourage you to stroll on level ground with modest elevation parts.

Waterfall Trek Time

The greatest time to visit is during the monsoon season. The weather is pleasant, and the environment is ideal for a hike or a day out. The Waterfall is most impressive during July and August when rainfall is highest.

Waterfall Trek From Mumbai

The Devkund Waterfalls are accessible by road from Mumbai. This is most likely the simplest method to get there. To go to Devkund, you must first travel to Karjat, then to Pali, and finally to Bhira. In Bhira, finding a parking spot might be difficult. As a result, it is preferable to drive to Pali, park your car there, and then take the bus to Bhira. If you prefer to go by bus, hop on one at Karjat Station, take it up to Pali, and change buses to Bhira.

Take a CST local to Karjat, then a bus to Pali, and finally to Bhira. Check your local listings for bus schedules.

Waterfall Trek From Pune

It takes around an hour and a half to drive from Pune to Devkund. If you're using GPS, follow the directions on the map or ask for directions along the route. The journey is pleasant; however, we recommend taking a taxi from Pune to the waterfalls because there aren't many parking spaces near the falls. Buses go from Khopoli to Pali and from Pali to Bhira to Devkund.

There are no direct trains from Pune to Bhira. To travel to the falls, take a train from Pune to Khopoli and then take a bus from there.

Waterfall Trek Map Details

The walk begins at Bhira's open parking lot. It's a well-maintained trail with signs at regular intervals. Unlike popular assumptions, being lost in the woods is practically impossible. The track is better constructed than a few well-known Maharashtra treks.

The track runs beside the Bhira dam reservoir for the first 30 minutes. Camping is not permitted near the waterfalls, so this is a nice area to pitch a tent if you plan to stay overnight. With the reservoir as a backdrop, this is an ideal camping spot.

From here, a modest drop will lead you along the reservoir's banks, where the track will continue into the forest. You must cross two dried-up creeks separated by around 20 minutes in the first 45 minutes. The landscape is a combination of open meadows and thickets.

After that, the route begins to ascend for a few minutes. Even though the ascent isn't very difficult, it does need a significant amount of effort. Along the walk, you may come across little huts offering tea, lemon juice, and snacks. Because this climb takes place in a deep forest, extreme caution is required when moving among the branches.

The route opens up to a rough stretch after the ascent is completed. A 10-minute hike through the rocks will bring you right up to the waterfall.

A control line has been drawn across the pond by locals. Swimming is permitted in the first half of the bisection. No one is permitted to get to the spot where the water meets the land since the depth is roughly 60 feet and people have drowned there in the past.

If you want to take better shots, October to mid-November is the optimum time to see the falls.

The journey is closed for travellers from July to September when the rain is at its worst.

Do you want to explore the tranquility that is far away from the bustle of the city? Let’s go upon one of Maharashtra’s most adored day-long hikes. It’s the Devkund Waterfall trek . It is situated in Bhira village, close to Kolad, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.

The waterfall is located in the Western ghats of Maharashtra near Tamhini Ghat; it is famous for its beautiful landscape in Sahyadri mountain. Lush valleys, thick forests, and beautiful waterfalls, riverbeds, and lakes are treasures of this place.

The trek starts from Bhira Patnus village. Devkund Waterfall trek distance is around 5-6 Kms. The journey to Bhira towards the falls of Devkund is approximately two hours. Once you arrive at the waterfalls, you will be able to witness the wonder of the waterfalls. It is running down from an altitude of up to 80 meters on the rocky surface, creating a natural pool of around 30 inches in diameter. The entire atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing.

  • Height: 2700 feet
  • Trek Length: 3 Km
  • Trek Duration: 4 Hours
  • Trek Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

What Makes The Trek Moderate To Difficult

The trail is flat for about 70% of the trek, The remaining 30 percent climbs up is uphill through thick forest and boulders. To complete the trek, you need to cross 3-4 river streams which is where things get tricky if it is raining. If it is raining at that time, the water pressure in these river streams is a lot which is powerful enough to wash away people with its pressure. This is the reality that no trekker group ever tells.

5 Moscow hiking trails that make for great adventure

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

1. Pilgrim’s road

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

Since ancient times Russian Orthodox believers have made pilgrimages from Moscow to one of the country’s most important monasteries, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in the town of Sergeyev Posad. Starting from the very center of Moscow, the route goes for over 100 km and can take four days; on the way you pass interesting historic and religious sites. It’s a beginner-level route, and there are many villages and towns near the trail so you’ll be able to easily find food and water if necessary. Staying in hotels is also possible.

Fun fact: Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the daughter of Peter the Great, made such a trek, but in her own way.  She would hike for 2-3 km, then return to the palace by coach, and resume the next day from the place she had reached the day before. The trip lasted for months, but it wasn’t very tiring. Nice approach, ha?

2. Green circle around Moscow

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

Want to get close to nature but don’t have time to leave the city? This trail around the city goes through Moscow parks and green zones. One can hike all summer and not get bored! It’s rather long - 158 km - so it’ll be hard to finish in one go; better to consider a few walks on different weekends. The route is suitable for family hikes, jogging, mountain biking, Nordic walking and winter skiing.

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

An ideal weekend hike is a beginner-level marked trail between the towns of Dolgoprudny and Mytishchi, which are 35 minutes from Moscow by train. At 19.8 km long, the route can be finished in a day or two and goes through Belyaninovo village where one can buy food and water. There are no natural water sources on the way so take some with you. The name comes from the MIPT university in Dolgoprudny that’s known as “Fiztech.”

4. Serednikovo

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

A shorter trail (up to six hours) goes from Firsanovka station (45 minutes by train from Moscow) to Serednikovo village, which is known for the Serednikovo estate, a historical residence of Russian nobles and a place where the young writer, Mikhail Lermontov, spent his summers. The route goes through forests and rivers, as well as a lake called “Shepkino swamp,” the site of the annual Shepka ethnic festival.

5. Mitino to Krasnogorskaya

devkund waterfall tourism camping & trekking

This 15-km route from Mitino metro station to Krasnogorskaya train station can be done in five hours and takes you through forest trails with small rivers and deep ravines. It features many ups and downs, attracting hikers and also skiers, cyclists and joggers. The latter means that you might occasionally see a group of athletes; so be ready to move aside and let them safely pass you. There are natural water sources on the way, but don’t drink there  - buy water supplies in advance.
