How to Travel from Da Nang to Hoi An in 2024: Detailed Transport Guide

With no airport or railway station in Hoi An , most visitors arrive via the city of Da Nang, which is 29 kilometres or 45-90 minutes north.

The two cities aren’t far very apart – but there are many different ways to travel between them depending on your comfort preference and budget.

The distance between Da Nang and Hoi An is 29 kilometres or 18 miles .

Da Nang to Hoi An travel time

There are two ways to travel from Danang to Hoi An : Via the coastal route, or inland on the DT607 highway. Travel time depends on the route your driver takes and the type of vehicle (cars and taxis are faster than minivans and coaches).

It takes a minimum of 45 minutes to get from Da Nang to Hoi An when travelling on the coastal road by car.

On the inland road, it takes a little longer, approximately 50 to 60 minutes by car.

This comprehensive guide for getting from Da Nang to Hoi An is researched and up to date for 2023. In this section, I’ll provide a broad overview of the options before going into the detail on all 5 transport methods.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing your transportation is how you’ll be arriving in Danang .

As you’ll see, Hoi An transfers depart from both Da Nang Airport and Da Nang City. If you’re flying in, you’ll want a service straight from Da Nang International Airport so that you don’t have to fight through traffic to get into the city first.

If you’re arriving in Danang by train or bus, note that the railway station and bus depot are both located in Danang city. The railway station is conveniently located close to the centre of town, but the main bus station is behind the airport, roughly 5km from the centre.

Similarly, if you’re planning to spend a night or two in Danang before you continue on to Hoi An, you’ll want a transport service that departs from the city or offers hotel pick up .

If you need to travel within Da Nang – for example, to get from the train station to the bus depot – I highly recommend using Grab App (Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber) to book a taxi or motorbike taxi.

If you’re looking for a one-way transfer from Danang to Hoi An and you don’t want to mess around with buses and taxis or share the ride with other passengers, booking a private car and driver is the most efficient and comfortable option.

A door to door, meet and greet airport transfer from Danang to Hoi An is ideal if you’re arriving in Da Nang by plane and and you don’t want to waste any time in getting to the Ancient Town. I also recommend this option for families and groups, as the price works out better.

A private car from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An Ancient Town takes 45-50 minutes depending on traffic and the location of your hotel.

How to book a private Da Nang to Hoi An transfer online

There are a couple of options for booking a private transfer from Da Nang Airport. Your accommodation in Hoi An can usually organise a car for you – but I often find the price is a bit high.

Instead, I recommend booking a car and driver through Get Your Guide. With this platform, you can book instantly and pay securely online. Hoi An Express is the most reputable transfer company, with more than 1,000 positive reviews and an overall rating of 4.5/5 on Get Your Guide . They offer 4-seater cars, 7-seater minivans, and 16-seater minibuses.

Both private car services recommended here also offer transfers in the opposite direction (Hoi An to Danang).

In this case, pick up will be at your hotel in Hoi An, and you’ll get dropped off at Danang Airport.

Option 2: Hoi An Express shuttle from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An

Hoi An Express also runs regular shared minivan shuttles between Danang International Airport and Hoi An Ancient Town.

The journey takes slightly longer, but because you’re sharing with other passengers, the price is lower – making this a great option for couples and solo travellers.

Shuttles leave the airport every 1-2 hours starting from 7am. Supply your flight details at the time of booking and Hoi An Express will recommend the most appropriate time slot (taking immigration and visa processing into account if you’re flying in from overseas).

When you land, a company representative will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name card. Vans are modern and air-conditioned with free WIFI on board.

When you get to Hoi An, they will drop you off at your hotel. (Note that an extra charge may apply if your accommodation is outside the city centre.)

How to buy tickets for the Da Nang to Hoi An shuttle bus

Travelling from Hoi An to Da Nang, shuttle buses run every hour between 6am and 8pm . A ticket includes pick-up at your central hotel in Hoi An and drop off at the domestic or international departure hall at Danang Airport.

If you plan on staying in Da Nang and just you want to visit Hoi An as a day trip , an accompanied tour with an English-speaking guide and private transportation is by far the most convenient way to travel.

One day in Hoi An is enough to see some of the major highlights and soak up the atmosphere of the UNESCO-Listed Ancient Town.

Or, if your intention is to stay overnight in Hoi An, it might be possible to make it a one-way tour by bringing your luggage with you on the day and getting dropped off in Hoi An at the end of the tour.

I’ve done this once or twice in the past. Just enquire with the tour operator first to double check.

I recommend booking a tour through either Viator or Get Your Guide . Both platforms have a huge variety of itinerary options at competitive prices, excellent customer support, and a generous refund policy if plans change.

If you’re looking for a way to travel between Da Nang and Hoi An that’s comfortable, efficient and has a slightly lower price tag, a taxi is a good compromise between private transfer and taking the bus.

If you’re already in Da Nang, you can use this door-to-door taxi service to travel from anywhere in the city to your hotel in Hoi An .

Similarly, you can organise to be picked up at the airport, the bus station or Danang Railway Station. In other words, it’s more flexible than the shuttle.

How much is a taxi from Danang to Hoi An?

There are lots of different factors that determine the price of a taxi from Danang to Hoi An, including time of day, how much luggage you have, and what kind of a mood the driver is in!

If you’re hailing a taxi off the street or at Danang Airport/station (which I don’t recommend!), it’s very easy to get talked into paying more than you should.

Generally speaking, a taxi from Danang to Hoi An should cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350,000-450,000 VND ($14-$18). Some companies charge up to 600,000 VND.

Can you use Grab to get to Hoi An?

Grab (Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber) is a popular transport app that can be used to book taxis, ride-share cars and motorbikes in Vietnam. Grab works in Danang , so it is possible to book a ride to Hoi An Ancient Town through the app.

To use Grab, you’ll either need to pick up a Vietnamese sim card or preferably an eSIM and download the app before you leave home and register with your usual phone number.

There is free WIFI at Danang Airport , so you can get online to book a ride when you land.

Expect to pay slightly less for a Grab taxi compared to a street taxi.

How to book a Da Nang to Hoi An taxi online

To avoid confusion and eliminate the possibility of getting ripped off, I highly recommend pre-booking a taxi through a reputable company in advance .

Another reputable company is Dichung Taxi , which is the leader in offering shared taxis to Hoi An. They too offer fixed pricing , so you won’t get ripped off.

Prices start from 370K VND for a 4-seater sedan. You can reserve a spot online in advance , but payment is made on the day directly to the driver (note that drivers only accept Vietnamese dong, not dollars). If you opt for the shared sedan, be aware that luggage space is limited .

Ride sharing with Dichung operates 24/7.

Reverse route: Hoi An to Danang by taxi

Both Ouros and Dichung can offer taxi services back to Danang Airport from Hoi An.

Option 5: Public bus from Da Nang to Hoi An

Perfect for backpackers & budget travellers
Slow but atmospheric!
Departs: Every 20 minutes between 5.30am and 6pm
Price: 18K VND per person

Important note: Unfortunately, the public bus between Da Nang and Hoi An stopped during COVID and has not started running again. I will update this guide when things change.

If you don’t mind spending a bit longer in transit, a great budget-friendly way to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An is by bus.

Bus #1 , colloquially known as ‘the yellow bus’ , is a local coach that loops from Da Nang to Hoi An and back.

Buses run from 5.30am and there is one departure every 20 minutes during high season, and buses every 30-45 minutes during low season.

This is definitely the local way to travel! There are lots of stops along the way, but it can be a fun experience – just don’t expect the AC to be working.

Tickets cost a low 18K VND (72 cents) per person without luggage or 30K VND ($1.20) with luggage. Tickets can be bought from the steward once you board the bus.

In Danang, the #1 stops outside the museum, the Cho Market, the Cathedral, and at a dozen other roadside stops in town. Conveniently, it’s all linked up with Google Maps , so you can use the app to find the nearest stop to you ( see here for the route ).

Note that the closest stop to the airport is 3km away, so you’ll have to walk or take a second local bus from out the front of the airport ( see here for the route ).

In Hoi An, the bus terminates at the Bến xe Hội An Nguyễn Tất Thành bus station, 1.5km north of the Ancient Town ( see the exact location here ).

Reverse route: Hoi An to Danang by public bus #1

Bus #1 originates at Bến xe Hội An Nguyễn Tất Thành in Hoi An and stops at all the same stops before terminating near the Cathedral in Da Nang.

Danang-Hoi An transport FAQ

How much does it cost from da nang to hoi an.

It costs anywhere from 80 cents to $26 to get from Da Nang to Hoi An. The cheapest option is the public bus, which costs just 18,000 VND or 80 US cents. A taxi to Hoi An costs $16, while a private transfer by VIP minivan costs $26.

What is the road from Da Nang to Hoi An like?

When I first visited Vietnam back in the early 2000s, I was quite anxious about road safety and getting car sick. On my last few trips, I’ve noticed that road conditions have improved quite a bit across the country.

The road between Da Nang and Hoi An is fairly uneventful. Because it hugs the coast, it’s flat and relatively straight the whole way. If you suffer from motion sickness, I still recommend carrying your regular remedy. But you shouldn’t have any major problems.

Road safety is still a concern in Vietnam, especially on busy highways like this one. I highly recommend choosing a reputable transport company with a good safety record and professional drivers (read on for my recommendations).

Avoid travelling after dark , and remember to wear your seat belt!

Pro tip: Choose a seat on the right side of the bus or van so you’re not looking into incoming traffic.

Where to stop between Da Nang and Hoi An?

The scenery between Da Nang and Hoi An is quite pleasant, especially when you’re travelling the reverse route (south to north) and you can look out the right-hand window towards the East Vietnam Sea. Leaving Danang, the trip starts by crossing the magnificent Trần Thị Lý Bridge .

There aren’t many places you’d want to stop along the way, apart from the Marble Mountains , a limestone rock formation with caves and shrines just outside of Da Nang.

If you’re travelling by Da Nang airport shuttle or on a bus, it won’t be possible to stop off for sightseeing or photos. There may be one rest stop at the halfway point, but only for 10 minutes or so.

If you’re in a taxi or private car, you can stop as often as you like for photos (and/or food, bathroom breaks, and whatever else you need!).

And if you decide to join an organised tour to get from Danang to Hoi An, you’ll be stopping off at various points of interest with your guide.

Is there a train from Da Nang to Hoi An?

No, there is no train service between Hoi An and Danang.

The closest train station to Hoi An is in Danang, so if you’re coming from elsewhere in Vietnam on the Reunification Express, you’ll need to transfer to one of the road options outlined above to travel the rest of the way to Hoi An (this is exactly what I did on my first trip to Vietnam).

Should I tip my taxi driver?

Tipping is a big part of the culture in Vietnam. Although it’s not mandatory, it is increasingly expected – especially from foreign tourists.

If you’re travelling from Da Nang to Hoi An by private car, taxi, or as part of a guided tour, it would be customary to leave your driver and/or guide a small tip (50K–100K VND) – provided you are happy with the service.

It’s not necessary to tip on buses, the shuttle, or when using Grab (although Grab drivers do appreciate it if you round the fare up to the nearest 10K VND).

How many days do you need in Hoi An?

Another factor that will determine which transportation you use is how long you intend to stay in Hoi An. Will you visit as a day trip and return to Da Nang in the evening? Or will you stay in Hoi An for a couple of nights?

Personally, I recommend staying in Hoi An for 1-2 nights . The Old City gets crowded (and extremely hot) in the middle of the day – thus if you stay overnight, you can get up early to explore in the quieter, cooler hours.

There are plenty of things to do in Hoi An to keep you occupied for 2 or more full days, including some fantastic cooking classes .

If you’re on a tight schedule or you just prefer to stay at the beach and do your sightseeing during the day, you can easily do a Da Nang to Hoi An day trip . If this is your preference, you’re better off organising a private car or taxi rather than using the bus. It will be a bit more expensive, but the trip will be quicker, maximising your time in Hoi An.

Another option is to join a guided tour from Da Nang to Hoi An . This is a very convenient way to travel between the two cities while incorporating some sightseeing along the way.

Where to stay in Da Nang

For budget travellers, Hanami Hotel and OYO 711 Otium Hostel both offer great value for money. Hanami is a little closer to the beach, making it my first choice.

► Booking: You can ask your hotel or the hotel that you book in Hoi An to find you a car rental service. Depend on your group size and your budget, you can choose to rent a 4-seat car or a 7-seat car

► Duration: A private car will probably take you from Danang to Hoi An in only 1 hour or 1 hour 15 minutes at most. Just give the driver the address of your hotel, they will surely be able to find it right away,

► Cost: 300.000VND – 400.000VND (USD $15.00 to $20.00)

► Pros and cons: Private car is the number one option to get from Da Nang to Hoi An, since it’s the most convenient and the fastest, also you can stop anywhere you like on the way, maybe for taking photos, for a drink or for lunch. Although this is the most expensive option, sharing the cost with other people actually makes renting a private car worth it.

2. GrabBike or GrabCar

► Booking: All you need to do is to download the app Grab (or Be) on your phone and book a motorbike or a car.

► Duration: Just like the private car, a GrabCar will take you to Hoi An in about 1 hour. A motorbike might take you longer, around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

► Pros and cons: For solo travelers with a single backpack, the motorbike option (GrabBike) is extremely cheap and convenient. Also, if you download the app Grab or Be for the first time, there would be many discounts code for you. However, these drivers – especially motorbike drivers -can go pretty fast sometimes, so you might want to bring your own helmet because they often only have low-quality helmets for the guests.

► Booking: If you don’t know how to use the app, you can call a traditional taxi instead. Taxis are available everywhere in Danang, and the most 2 popular companies that you should call are: Mai Linh Taxi (+84 511 352 5252) or Vinasun Taxi (+84 511 368 6868)

► Duration: around 1 hour

► Cost: around 300.000VND – 400.000VND (USD $15.00 to $20.00).

► Pros and cons: A taxi is almost like renting a private car, so you can place many stuff on the car, and the duration is short. However, you might not be able to stop for taking photos, and some taxi drivers may go around to get more money from you.

4. Public Bus

► Booking: You can take bus number 1 which will take you directly from Danang and Hoi An, or the other way around. The bus departs every 20 minutes, starting from 5:30AM to 6PM everyday.

► Duration: about 1:30 hour

► Cost: 25000VND (USD $1)/one way. You can get on the bus first then purchase the ticket there. There’s no online ticket available for buses in Vietnam. Tips: the price is often printed on the window of the bus, so make sure to pay the right price.

► Pros and cons: This is the cheapest way to get from Danang to Hoi An, and the duration is not too long. However, you won’t have much space to store your stuff since there might be many people on the bus (but on lucky days, there might be very few people). Another downside of taking public bus is that the bus stop is about two miles from the airport, so you will need to take a taxi there anyway

5. Motorbike

► Booking: You can easily rent a motorbike in Danang. 2 motorbike rental services that you can reliably book are:

► Cost: about 100.000VND/day, and you can get a discount if you rent it for a longer period.

► Pros and cons: Travelling by a motorbike is the best way to fully experience the beautiful coastline from Danang to Hoi An, and it’s also convenient because you are at your own pace. However, renting a motorbike will require you to put a deposit and your ID card to ensure, so you should prepare a notarized copy of your passport in advance. Also, the traffic in Vietnam may not be the same as in your country. It could be dangerous, so don’t try if you are not an experienced driver.

Hoi An is one of the most popular places in Vietnam for people to travel. It is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage City famous for its old town.

However, most longer transport options end in Da Nang, such as the train or flights. This means to travel to Hoi An you need to figure out how exactly to get from Da Nang to Hoi An, which can be quite a hassle for travelers, especially if you are coming from a long journey!

This is a journey I have made multiple times, and mainly on public transport as when I was backpacking Vietnam there is no way I was splurging on a taxi!

Luckily because Hoi An is a popular tourist town this is an extremely common route and there are plenty of options to choose from. No matter what time of day or night you arrive there will always be some sort of option available.

So, what is the best way to get from Da Nang to Hoi An, or even Hoi An to Danang? Taking a taxi can be expensive, though taking a local bus can be a bit daunting for the first time, how are you even meant to know which one to get on?

So let’s go through all the options from a taxi, bus, and private transfer to the taxis and buses to find the right option for you.

Note: Since 2020 the No. 1 public bus between Da Nang and Hoi An and Sinh Tourist Bus have stopped running. I will update this guide when they resume service.

As I said the Da Nang to Hoi An time to travel is pretty quick and you have two different ways of transport available.

This is either the coastal route or inland on the main highway. However, honestly, the exact time it takes to travel depends on the route the driver takes, the type of car, as well as traffic.

At a minimum, it will take you 45 minutes from Da Nang to Hoi An when you are taking a taxi by the coastal road option.

In contrast, it takes slightly longer at 50 to 60 minutes to travel the inland road on the highway.

Is There A Train From Da Nang To Hoi An?

No, you can’t travel Da Nang to Hoi An by train. However, there are other modes of transportation available such as buses, taxis, private transfers, and Grab.

The 5 Best Ways How To Get From Da Nang To Hoi An

Perhaps you don’t have time to read this entire article. Fair. Here is a quick easy to read breakdown so you can find the best option for you:

Option 1. Private Transfer With Hoi An Express From Da Nang To Hoi An

Option 2. Shared Shuttle From Da Nang To Hoi An

Next up we have another awesome option for travelers from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An Old Town is taking the Hoi An Express shared shuttle .

They are the same company mentioned above, though they also have shuttle buses departing every hour between 5 am and 11 pm daily from Da Nang Airport.

However, depending on what time your flight arrives you may find yourself waiting a little while for the next bus to depart. Nevertheless, if you are arriving from an international flight you may find yourself waiting a while to get your visa on arrival anyway.

The journey on the Hoi An Express Bus costs $8.40 per person making it a great option for solo travelers or those on a mid-range budget such as myself. When you prebook a representative will meet you at arrivals with your name on a place card and take you to the bus.

If you are not overly confident about traveling and navigating airports this provides an excellent option.

The buses also have air conditioning and free wifi on board. Lastly, they will also drop you off right outside of your hotel in Hoi An.

Just be aware that if it is outside of the main city center there may be an extra charge.

Now, another option is simply doing a day trip from Da Nang to Hoi An. This is an excellent option if you plan to base yourself in Da Nang, though don’t want to miss out on exploring this beautiful town.

Even though one day in Hoi An doesn’t seem like long, you will be able to see all the highlights in the Old Town and really soak up the atmosphere. Seriously it’s incredible here.

Alternatively, you could even organize in advance with your tour provider to leave you in Hoi An at the end. You will need to bring your luggage with you, so you need to speak with the company to ensure they have room.

This is something I have done numerous times before when traveling and it allows you to experience the best of a destination on a tour, and then explore at your own pace the following day.

Option 4. Taxi From Da Nang To Hoi An

A super easy and convenient way to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An is by taxi. This is the perfect choice if you are looking for something that is comfortable, private, and efficient.

Whether you are already in Da Nang at a hostel or hotel, or perhaps you want to travel to Hoi An from the airport or train station in Da Nang there will be plenty of taxis around who can take you the distance.

I mean if you have either traveled to Vietnam or anywhere in Southeast Asia, you will know how easy taxis are to come by.

A taxi will take you approximately 45 minutes to travel to Hoi An. You can also organize your taxi to pick you up from wherever you are, making it perfect if you are traveling at an awkward time of the day.

How Much Is A Taxi

Depending on your exact location in Da Nang, the time of day, the taxi company that you book with, and even the mood of the driver can and will affect the end price that you will pay.

You can also find yourself spending more than necessary when finding a driver in popular locations such as Da Nang Airport or train station. If possible, in such situations, you are best off walking a short distance away and then getting a taxi.

Nevertheless, you can expect the Da Nang to Hoi An taxi cost to be between 350,000 to 450,000 VND or $14.00 to $18.00.

Should You Prebook Your Taxi

To keep things stress-free you may decide you want to instead pre-book your taxi rather than just trying to find one on the side of the road.

12.Go Asia is my favorite way of booking transport in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. They offer instant confirmation, secure online payment, and decent prices.

This is a good method when you are worried about getting ripped off, something which unfortunately is a common occurrence in Vietnam.

On their site, you will easily be able to book with Ouros Travel, who are travelers’ preferred transport method. They are a professional taxi company that is registered with the Ministry of Tourism.

Ouros runs sedans, SUVs, and minivans, starting from $14.00. These taxis run 24/7 and offer a door-to-door service, so all the hard work is done for you.

Booking a Grab Taxi

Another option is to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An grab car.

Grab is a mobile app similar to Uber. It is used widely in Southeast Asia and often will provide you with better rates than getting a taxi by the meter.

It also takes away the stress of having to negotiate a rate or make sure you are using a reputable company.

I have also used Grab throughout Vietnam and it is an excellent way to travel. I also quite like that it predetermines your rate so you know what to expect and that you are receiving a fair price.

If you are not staying over in Hoi An, perhaps just wanting to do a day trip, you can also book a motorbike via the Grab app, since you won’t be traveling with luggage. This will be cheaper again than booking a vehicle.

To use Grab you will need a Vietnamese sim card, eSim, or download the app before you leave home so you can register your phone number.

I always try to get a local SIM card wherever I am traveling as it makes it easy to use apps like these when on the road and they are usually pretty affordable, especially in Southeast Asia.

Option 5: Da Nang To Hoi An Bus

Note: Since Covid hit unfortunately the public bus between Da Nang and Hoi An has been out of service. Hopefully, with increased tourism, this will restart again, but as of current, we are still waiting.

A budget-friendly option to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An, perfect for backpackers, is taking the public bus . This is also the option I chose, simply because it was the cheapest. However, that doesn’t mean it is for everyone.

This is definitely the local way to travel. Expect plenty of stopping along the way, picking up and dropping off passengers. Also, there isn’t air conditioning.

However, if it’s warm they will drive with the doors open, just make sure your bags don’t fall out.

You will want to take bus #1, also known as the yellow bus, to get from Da Nang to Hanoi . This is a local bus that just drives between Da Nang and Hoi An throughout the day. You can catch it from the museum, Cho Market, the Cathedral, and a few other stops in town as well.

We caught it the block over from the train station, just head over to the next street away from the train station, and the bus drives through here. You can find the exact bus stop locations on Google Maps.

Though the locals are friendly enough to point you in the correct location, at least they were with us.

The bus runs from 5.30 am to 6 pm, departing every 20 minutes in the high season and every 40 minutes in the low season.

In Hoi An the bus stops at Bến xe Hội An Nguyễn Tất Thành bus station, 1.5km north of the Ancient Town. Though it is a flat and pathed walk into the city center, which makes it a lot easier to navigate.

How Much Are Bus Tickets

It costs 18,000 VND / $0.80 per person to take the bus from Da Nang to Hoi An. However, be aware that it does cost extra if you are traveling with luggage. Instead, a ticket will cost 30,000 VND / $1.30 with luggage.

This is simply because you are taking up extra space with your luggage and they won’t be able to fit as many people on the bus. Be aware this is the cost for one large suitcase or backpack .

If you are traveling with multiple pieces of luggage by yourself you may want to look at a different option as you will need to be able to get your bags on and off quickly depending on where you are stopping and starting.

My Experience Taking The Public Bus

Note: Since Covid hit unfortunately the Da Nang to Hoi An bus (and vice versa) has been out of service. Hopefully, with increased tourism, this will restart again, but as of current, we are still waiting.

After taking the train from Hue to Da Nang we needed to take some sort of transport from Da Nang to Hoi An. Doing some prior research I decided against taking a taxi, simply because this would be too expensive for my Vietnam travel budget.

Since it was only midday we decided we could travel from Da Nang to Hoi An public bus. We had a semi idea where the bus stop was, and if the bus never came then we had plenty of time to come up with a plan B.

Luckily there were a few groups from the train who all had the same idea and we all started to cross the road away from the train station entryway and head to the next street over.

We all kind of bunched together in a spot we thought was the stop by the traffic lights. But a local soon came over and pointed us in the correct direction about 50 meters or so down the street.

Soon enough the bus came along and we all jumped on board. We paid the 30,000 VND which is the ticket price including bags and found a spot at the back of the bus with a few other travelers. Our bags were piled up on a large space on the floor as the bus continued down the street.

I sat back and watched the sights go past. The bus stopped and started again a few times in the city of Da Nang, though as soon as we were out of there it was an easy drive alongside the coastline to Hoi An .

Honestly, the drive itself is rather uneventful, there are not any spectacular landscapes along the way. Though soon enough the bus pulled into a small little depot seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

Looking at our phones it was only a short walk from here to our accommodation, so we headed on the way to our homestay. It was a super easy walk with wide footpaths and minimal obstructions.

Option 6: Sinh Tourist Bus From Da Nang To Hoi An

Note: Unfortunately since Covid, the Sinh Tourist bus between Da Nang and Hoi An has been out of service. Hopefully, with tourism increasing again this will restart, but as of current, we are still waiting.

Last but not least is the option to take the Sinh Tourist bus Danang to Hoi An. This is a great choice if you are already in the city of Da Nang or perhaps arrived at the train station.

The bus departs from The Sinh Tourist office located at 16, 3 Thang 2, Thuan Phuoc in the north-western part of the city. It is 8 kilometers from the main bus terminal and 2 kilometers from Con Market in the center of the city.

The Sinh Tourist bus departs twice daily, in the morning at 10 am and in the afternoon at 3.30 pm. You can expect the journey to take around an hour and a half depending on traffic.

The cost of the ticket from Da Nang to Hoi An with the Sinh Tourist is 250,000 VND / $10.80 per person. You can either book online at 12.Go Asia or Baolau . Alternatively, if you’d like to book in person, you can do so at their office when you arrive in Da Nang.

They are a popular bus company with travelers and I have used them numerous times in my Vietnam travels. They are always professional, reputable, and reliable.

Many times I have chosen to pay a little bit more to travel with them than a random company. There will be air conditioning, plenty of luggage space, and extra legroom.

For the Da Nang to Hoi An route, The Sinh Tourist uses sleeper buses with lie-down seats. I am not always the biggest fan of these, but it is a short distance, and this company has taken extra steps to make their buses as comfortable as possible.

The journey finishes at The Sinh Tourist office in Hoi An. This is located at 646 Hai Ba Trung, 1.5km north of the Night Market and 600m from the Ancient City.

Where To Stay In Hoi An?

There are countless 5-star resorts, locally run guesthouses, and hostels in Hoi An. No matter your budget or the type of traveler you are there is something to fit all needs.

There are also plenty of different landscapes to choose from whether that is something in the city, beachside, or in the countryside. Personally, I choose to stay in a homestay near the old quarter in Hoi An.

It’s not hard to find a good location here. You will easily find yourself within walking distance of great shopping, restaurants, and those incredible sights this place is known for.

A common thing in Hoi An is that your accommodation will include bicycle use, so if possible try to book somewhere that includes this.

Things To Do In Hoi An

Hoi An is a bustling city with plenty of attractions, there are so many things to do here that will keep you busy throughout your stay. This is just a small overview, so for more information on be sure to check out my guide on things to do in Hoi An .

Hoi An Old Town: No doubt exploring the Old Town is the number one thing to do in Hoi An, and is considered one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam . This fact is proven true by it being granted a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through Hoi An Old Town you will be in awe.

My Son Sanctuary: Located in a rainforest-like setting, the amazing complex of the My Son Sanctuary is incredible. It will transport you from the busy Vietnam city life to a Jurassic park setting rich in history. The grounds are a UNESCO world heritage site and it is marketed as the Angkor Wat of Vietnam.

Thanh Ha Pottery Village: Easy to reach on bicycle or motorbike is Thanh Ha Pottery Village . It is an integral place of Vietnamese history. The skilled craftsmen who lived here even contributed pieces in the Imperial City of Hue when it was under the control of the Nguyen Dynasty.

Night Market: Located within the Hoi An Old Town in the Night Market you could find any Vietnamese souvenir your heart requires. Held every night from 5 pm to 11 pm you will no doubt be spending your nights exploring the many stalls.

Beach Day: This coastal town is lucky enough to be close to some amazing beaches. The most popular beach is definitely An Bang.

Tra Que Vegetable Village: Sometimes you just need to get out of the city and a visit to Tra Que Vegetable Village is the perfect way to do this! It is extremely accessible and soon enough you will find yourself in a slower pace of life surrounded by workers and delicious produce.

On arrival at Da Nang International Airport , you will be greeted by our guide and transferred to your hotel in town. After check-in and repose, visit the Cham Museum – the houses of the complete collection of Cham artifacts anywhere in the world and the Marble Mountain – the five elements of the Universe (water, wood, air, fire, and earth). Relax. Then get on the vehicle and transfer to Hoi An Ancient Town. Check in the hotel and relax. Overnight in Hoi An.

This morning, leave Hoi An for My Son Holy Land which used to be an imperial city during the Cham dynasty; My Son is the former capital of the ancient Cham civilization that ruled Central Vietnam from the second to the thirteenth century. Their religion was primarily derived from Indian Hinduism. My Son is considered to be one of the best-preserved Cham structures in Vietnam. The complex is comprised of seventy Hindu-like towers and temples dating from the second century.

My Son Sanctuary is a large complex of religious relics that comprises more than 70 architectural works. They include temples and towers that connect to each other with complicated red brick designs. The main component of the Cham architectural design is the tower, built to reflect the divinity of the King. Spend 2 hours exploring the complex before going back to Hoi An for lunch.

The Well Known Marble Mountain In Da Nang

After breakfast, you are picked up at the hotel in Hoi An then transfer to Ba Na Hill , take a cable car trip (awarded 2 GUINNESS records) to Ba Na Hills Resort , enjoying green natural forests and Dream Stream, Elephant Rock, Rainbow from above. If you are arriving anywhere in the town then either arrange collection with your hotel in Hoi An or download the Grab app ( android / apple ) and get a taxi to your hotel.

A Map From Da Nang To Hoi An

#1 Shared Shuttle

If you are flying into Da Nang International Airport (and there are less than 3 of you) then this is THE option to choose from. It’s by far the cheapest option (apart from the public bus) and it is easy, seamless, and quick.

When you book, you will be given lots of time slots to choose from. Choose the one closest to your arrival time. After you come out of the airport there will be a representative waiting for you with your name on a card and will take you to the shuttle bus.

The bus may also have other people on and may stop at a few places to pick up other passengers. This is why the time varies from 50mins to 90mins. This service will drop you off at your hotel so there is no travel time once you get to Hoi An.

#2 Private Car – Booked

This is with the exact same company as the shuttle above but instead of a shuttle you get a private car/shuttle (depending on the size of your group).

It is quicker and more convenient than the shuttle but it is more expensive. This cost difference gets smaller and smaller the more people you have in your group. Check out the prices here to see what I mean.

So, I recommend this option for groups of at least 3+.

You may be thinking, why not just get a local taxi? Well, a local taxi from the airport will try to charge you a huge premium if you are being picked up from the airport and if you decide to use the Grab app then you will need a local sim card.

We ALWAYS get a local sim if we are going somewhere our sim does not work. In SE Asia these sims are usually very affordable and make the entire trip much more manageable and simple.

The reason I say this is, with a local sim you will be able to download and use Grab ( android / apple ). This app is a taxi/ride app and, in my experience, works very well and has very competitive rates.

It will remove the need to haggle (which I dislike) and you will be able to get a taxi very fast from wherever you are. So, this is definitely the best option if you are arriving in Hoi An from any other mode of transport, other than by air.

The only thing that I would say is that some Grab taxi drivers will immediately cancel the job and try to charge you the same fare/more. This is because they do not agree with the % that Grab takes. If you go this route then you lose all the customer service that Grab offers (which is very good) but you may get a cheaper fare. It’s up to you.

#4 Arranged By The Hotel

If you want the most convenient and easiest way to do the Da Nang to Hoi An trip then just ask your hotel to sort out transport. Contact them before you arrive, let them know exactly where you want to be picked up from and they will arrange a driver for a fee.

They may send a shuttle bus, a taxi, or a private vehicle depending on the hotel but it is probably the simplest way of organizing this. The fee is usually slightly higher than you can get if you do it by yourself but this is usually negligible.

Once you arrive at the hotel, they will ask for payment and that’s the whole transaction completed. This is actually the way we did it. I still think going for the shared shuttle is a better option as it is slightly cheaper than what we paid and it will be a nicer bus.

Travelling from Danang to Hoi An gets you access to the incredible night market

This is only an option if you are planning on staying in Da Nang. It is a very cool city and it has some incredible things to do but I would actually suggest coming down to Hoi An for a couple of days at least.

Either way, if you do not have time for that then jump on this one-day tour of Hoi An and the tourist hotspots of the area. You will visit the archaeological ruins of the Champa Kingdom and then take a guided tour of the incredible Hoi An Ancient Town.

This is a fantastic option if you are set on not staying in Hoi An but it will cost more than the other options on this list. Check out the price for you and your availability here!

Other Options To Travel From Da Nang To Hoi An

The bus from Da Nang to Hoi An is the most affordable option on this list. However, in most cases, it is also the slowest and most difficult.

If you are coming from the airport then the closest bus stop is 3km away so you will have to take another bus/taxi to the closest stop (or walk but…who wants to do that?). Once you actually get to a station, buying a ticket is relatively easy and the busses do run very frequently throughout the day.

If you have luggage then I recommend you just avoid the bus altogether. You will pay a little extra but the main issue is if the bus is busy then it can be difficult just to get the luggage on the bus.

If you have a small bag and want the most cost-effective way of travelling then the easiest way is to plan your trip with google maps. Simply put in your arrival point in Da Nang and your arrival point in Hoi An and it will give you the option to choose the bus, this will then give you the closest bus station to you.

Remember! Look out for the yellow buses, they are the ones going to Hoi An!

#7 Motorbike

Do you have a motorbike license in your home country? If not then your travel insurance WILL NOT cover you for any accidents or injury as a result of riding a motorbike, including as a passenger.

If you do then you also have the option of getting a Grab Bike which is just the same as using the Grab app for a taxi but you will be picked up on a motorbike. It’s not a lot cheaper and it is only available to people with basically no luggage so I just think it’s a worse experience in general.

While Da Nang is modern, Hoi An has a unique ancient beauty with remarkable gastronomy. Here are our itinerary suggestions for your 5 days in Da Nang and Hoi An to enjoy the time during your tour to Central Vietnam .

Best Time to Visit Danang and Hoian

World Heritage sites: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue in 6 Days

The temperature of Da Nang and Hoi An is influenced by the transition between North and South of Vietnam. It is divided into 2 seasons: dry season and rainy season. While the dry season begins from December to August, the rainy season is from September to November. In addition, the climate of Da Nang and Hoi An is also influenced by the monsoon in North Vietnam in winter.

We advise you to travel in 5 days to Da Nang and Hoi An in the dry season. Because it does not rain much and is dry. This is the best time to enjoy your trip and have the essential experiences like playing, taking beautiful photos, swimming etc. However, from May to August, the temperature is high. So visitors should be careful to protect their health and skin.

Transportation for 5 Days in Danang and Hoinn

1. by bus and minibus.

It is most often a 40-45 seat bus, sometimes a 12-15 seat minibus. Banknotes can be paid either in dollars or in dongs.

2. By public bus

Bus station: 33, Dien Bien Phu (384-32-59). 3 km from the center, on the road to Hue
Bus to Hue (101km), Tam Ky (69 km), Tra My, Nha Trang, Pleiku, Ban Me Thuot, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi
For Hoi An: since the 29th, Dien Bien Phu. Bus every 30 mins, 5:30 am-6pm. Distance: 35 km

3. By taxi or car with driver

The journey from Da Nang to Hoi An costs around 9 Euro. Add around 1.05 Euro for a stop on the way to Marble Mountains. This is the same as if we made a round trip by taxi from Da Nang

4. By train

– Railway station (plan A2): 202, Hai Phong, ticket offices open 4 am-5pm. Usually one of the tellers speaks some English. The timetables are posted outside and inside the station. The fastest trains are SE3 to SE5 and SE7. The odd numbers go south, the peers go north. The trains identified by TN (TN 1, TN 3, etc.) are cheaper but clearly quick.

– For Hue: 5 trains / day, between 6:38 am and 11:12 pm. The trip lasts 2h30-3h35 depending on the speed of the train. The fastest is the SE4 which leaves around 2:30 p.m. Price: around 50,000 VND depending on whether you choose a hard or soft seat.

– For Hanoi: it’s the same line as Hue. The SE4, the fastest, leaves Da nang around 2:30 p.m. and arrives in Hanoi around 5 a.m. the next morning. SE2 arrives at 4 a.m. Otherwise there is SE6, which circulates mainly during the day.

– For Ho Chi Minh – City (Sai Gon): 5 trains / day, screw Nh8-21h41. The fastest is SE3 which arrives at Sai Gon around 5am. Duration: just over 15h. No rail journey is made entirely by day or by night.

5. By plane

International airport: 2 km from the center of Da Nang and 38 km from Hoi An, You will find a currency exchange counter there (Mon-Sat 7 am-7pm). By taxi, count 25,000 – 40,000 Dg depending on the district of Da Nang where you are going. For longer journeys, contact the “Airport taxi” counter.

After that, We will go to a local family to join a ” Hoi An Cooking class”. We were in Da Nang and we would like to visit the main attractions in Da Nang and Hoi An. I looked around on the internet and we found this tour which is met our needs. This is a perfect tour for us because we just had one day in Da Nang. We visited Marble mountains, My Son Sanctuary, Linh Ung pagoda with the tallest lady buddha statue, Hoi An ancient town. They all beautiful and well maintained. Our tour guide Hoa was excellent! He is not only a tour guide but also he is a photographer! Thank you for a great experience!

N ear the South China Sea in Central Vietnam, an ancient town thrives. An international trading port for centuries, Hoi An disappeared from prominence in the late 18th century.

More than 200 years later, the Vietnamese city has seen a resurgence, transforming into a bustling tourist destination.

Strings of colorful lanterns illuminate the landscape. Pagodas and temples make a grand statement with their majestic architecture. Yellow houses once used by merchants line the narrow, winding streets.

Now, they're brimming with tourists, sipping coffee, sampling Vietnamese cuisine, bartering for cheap goods, and coveting tailor-made suits and dresses.

Sampans and cruise boats drift lazily down the Thu Bon River, setting one of Vietnam's most iconic scenes.

Hoi An's old town oozes charm. Nestled in the Quang Nam province of Central Vietnam, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is a delightful convergence of French, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architecture.

Mix in the regional cuisine, the shimmering river, and the sacred shrines, and it's hard not to fall in love with Hoi An.

The Chua Cau, also known as the Temple Bridge or the Japanese Covered Bridge, is a must to walk across.

More than 400 years old, the beautiful relic represents the physical connection between the Chinese and Japanese sides of town.

The ornate bridge boasts intricately carved columns, a curved roof, and a tiny temple. Even more impressive, the ancient bridge is built entirely of wood.

You might also recognize the bridge from your Vietnamese money. It's displayed on the 20,000 VND note.

2. Sample the Cafes

We enjoyed the beauty of silence at Reaching Out Teahouse , a tranquil teahouse with hearing and speech-impaired staff. One of our friends, who has a Cochlear implant, enthusiastically signed with our waitress.

The teahouse offers an assortment of Vietnamese coffees and teas. For the indecisive, their tasting sets are a fabulous option.

Their tea and coffee flights come with three offerings and handmade cookies. There's also a cookie sampler platter featuring handmade cookies, cakes, and candy for those with a sweet tooth.

We were also delighted to discover Phin , a foliage-covered cafe off the beaten path.

Wandering down narrow streets and away from the hubbub of the busy marketplace, we found the coffee house named for the metal tool used to brew traditional Vietnamese coffee .

You don't want to miss an opportunity to sip on bold coffee from the region's famous Robusta beans. The cafe also carries refreshing iced teas and American-style salads and sandwiches.

3. Barter for a Great Deal

Back in the local market, shophouses line the streets. You'll find stall after stall with lanterns, ceramics, trinkets, and, most of all, clothes and shoes.

There are plenty of opportunities to find handmade silk and leather goods for an affordable price. Shopkeepers will barter with you but don't go overboard with your lower offer.

Most items are already reasonably priced, especially compared to U.S. and European prices. Plenty of other shops have similar wares if you're unhappy with a deal. Simply move on.

4. Get a Custom-Made Garment

Hoi An is renowned for its skilled tailors, making the city one of the best places to order a handmade dress or suit.

Fabric and tailor shops are available throughout the ancient city, with sample mannequins showing off the stylish shorts, pants, dresses, and suits that could be yours.

There are plenty of fabric options; take advantage of the abundance of silk to create an exceptional custom-made garment.

You'll find quality material and prices substantially less than you'd pay in the U.S. or Europe. Bringing a picture can help the tailors better match your vision.

Most tailors can whip out an outfit in a day or two, which is ideal for traveling visitors. A suit can take longer, so be prepared to stop by a tailor when you arrive in Hoi An.

You can also cut some legwork by doing pre-trip research on the best tailors and gathering design ideas.

5. Learn About Silk-Weaving

Go behind the scenes to see how all those gorgeous silk garments are made. The Hoi An Silk Village is a great place to get a guided tour and learn about traditional silk weaving.

You'll observe the silkworms, watch how the thread is woven into the fabric, and have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful silk souvenir.

The village offers several half-day tours, including a visit to the Quang Nam silk weaving house and one with a silk lantern -making component.

If you want a quicker excursion, stop by Thang Loi, a fine arts handicraft company with more than 400 employees.

On our visit, we saw the silkworms up close, watched the weaving process, and observed embroiders creating handmade artwork. The shop also has artisans making sleeping mats, lanterns, and wood carvings.

An elaborate showroom enticed us with an assortment of silk dresses, suits, scarves, and ties. A friend chose a few colorful ties for her husband at a fraction of what she would have paid stateside.

Upstairs, the tailor shop is known for creating custom garments in less than a day.

6. Pay Your Respect at a Local Temple

The ancient city is a sacred spot for temples and pagodas. There are dozens of spiritual sites, most centuries old.

Visitors can appreciate the peaceful tranquility of these houses of worship, gathering a firsthand look at the historical and religious soul of the city.

The largest place of worship is Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, also known as Fujian Assembly Hall.

Built in the 1690s, the extensive grounds feature elaborate Tam-style architecture with a stunning gate, two halls, a courtyard, and a backyard.

Another striking landmark is the Ba Mu Temple. Even older than Fujian Assembly Hall, the ancient temple is distinctive for the small pond in front of the entrance gate and the gate itself.

Restored in recent years, the gate is characterized by its three entrances and a circular window.

While most pagodas are free to visit, some temples in the old town require an entrance ticket (including Fujian Assembly Hall).

Tourists should dress respectfully, covering their shoulders and avoiding extremely casual attire. Guests are welcome to purchase incense and pray for blessings at the shrines.

7. Indulge your taste buds with culinary delights

Hoi An is a delight for your eyes and a feast for your taste buds. You definitely won't go hungry in this town.

Banh mi is a street food staple. It can be found everywhere in Vietnam, but Banh Mi Phuong in Hoi An ancient town is considered the quintessential place to grab the famous sandwich.

The Hoi An Central Market features fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, and spices. But it also has numerous food stalls where foodies can try dumplings, noodle bowls, and sizzling pancakes.

A local food tour is a delicious way to try multiple dishes, especially Hoi An specialties.

Cao lau is the most famous local cuisine, a flavorful noodle dish with pork and greens.

8. Take a Sunset Boat Ride in Hoi An

One of the magical aspects of Hoi An is the sunset along the river. As the sky lights up with warm colors, boats sail lazily along the Thu Bon River.

Paper lanterns along the riverbank, adjacent roads, and shops add to the luminous splendor.

The boats also carry paper lanterns, with smaller sampans holding up to four passengers, and covered cruise boats fitting more than double that.

Lotus flower candles also float along the river. Purchased by tourists, they light a candle and place it in a paper lantern. The idea is the person makes a wish, and the river carries it on.

The lanterns, city lights, and sunset combine to create stunning, shimmering reflections in the water. It's a spectacular site to witness on or off a boat.

The river snakes along several villages, making it a unique way to experience village life and witness skillful workers creating pottery and silk.

Another option is to take a half-day cruise from My Son with a local guide to see the Hindu ruins and conclude with the sunset cruise into Hoi An.

9. Watch the City Turn Luminous

The best part of visiting Hoi An is the lanterns at dusk. The city lights up under the colorful paper lanterns, setting a delightful ambiance you don't want to miss.

Thousands of lanterns stretch above the streets, connecting the yellow market houses from one historic building to the next.

More lanterns light the riverbanks and boats, creating a lantern city of our Instagram dreams. There's an aura to it that pictures don't do justice.

As it grows darker, lights on the boats and shoreline create a neon effect on the water. On shore, the night market is also lit up, providing an opportunity to explore the city all over again.

Vendor stalls are chock full of lanterns, pottery, jewelry, clothing, and other souvenirs. There are also plenty of vendors selling street food and beverages.

Strolling the riverbank and streets of Hoi An at night is one of the most popular things to do for good reason.

Getting There

If possible, Hoi An is the perfect place to stay for two or three nights, allowing you to capture all aspects of this magical city.

If budget or time constraints make several full days impossible, make a half-day visit to the old town of Hoi An. In this scenario, the best time to arrive is in the afternoon so that you can enjoy the evening ambiance.

Visitors with more time should take advantage of the stellar beaches along Hoi An's coastline, especially An Bang and Cua Dai. They may also want to arrange a tour of the Cham Islands, a peaceful and worthy detour.

From Da Nang

Hoi An is only about 20 miles from Da Nang, a popular beach town with a regional airport and multiple daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi.

It's an hour-long bus ride from the Da Nang airport to Hoi An's central bus station. It's about a 15-minute walk to the old city center.

You can also hire a private driver (Grab is the Vietnam version of Uber) or rent a motorbike.

Remember, motorbikes are not allowed in Hoi An ancient town for most of the day. If you're only spending a day in the city, a tour group shuttle bus may be the best way to get there.

Hue is farther north than Da Nang, so it will be a longer trip to Hoi An. A bus takes about 3.5 hours, while a hired car trip will take about 2.5 hours.

A longer route over the Hai Van Pass takes about four hours but offers stunning mountain and coastal scenery.

A Hue train route also showcases similarly spectacular scenery, including mountains, beaches, rice fields, and lagoons.

Be aware the train stops at a station in Da Nang, not Hoi An, so you'll still need to utilize a public bus, car, or motorbike for the final leg.

Whether you stay in Hoi An or Da Nang, the Marble Mountains and Golden Bridge at Sun World Ba Na Hills will be within easy reach.

Hoi An was my favorite destination in Vietnam .

When I backpacked Hoi An, I fell in love.

I loved spending time by the river, watching the sunset, strolling through the narrow streets of the Old Town strung with colorful lanterns, and drinking cheap beer. The city is packed with picturesque historical homes, pagodas, and street-side cafes.

It’s amazing.

Hoi An is an extremely popular place for buying handmade clothing and is one of the main reasons why people come here. The garment industry is the city’s main non-tourist industry. You can get anything made here, from custom-made suits to gowns to sundresses to leather boots to sneakers. The tailor shops will even mail all your goods home to you.

But, even if you don’t want to shop, Hoi An makes for a relaxing destination in an otherwise hectic country as the beach is only a 15-minute bike ride out of town.

This city was also my favorite place to gorge on Vietnamese food (don’t miss trying the cau lao that Hoi An is known for!).

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Hoi An

1. Explore My Son

My Son is one of the most important sites relating to the ancient Kingdom of Champa and is said to have been Vietnam’s religious and intellectual center. Even in their ruined state, the remaining Hindu temple structures are impressive. Over 70 temples and tombs were constructed at the site between the 4th and 13th centuries by the former Kings of Champa in honor of the Hindu god Shiva. The temples are in a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) wide valley surrounded by mountains, and the mouth of the sacred Thu Bon River flows past them. Excavation and restoration began in the 1930s and the area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission is 150,000 VND per person. You can easily get to and from the site for less than 235,000 VND round-trip.

2. Relax on the beaches

An Bang and Cua Dai beaches are both close to Hoi An and are great places to spend an afternoon. Cua Dai is a 3-kilometer (2-mile) stretch of coastline that is part of the Hoi An Ancient Town UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Vietnam. It provides a gorgeous retreat from the bustling streets of the city. North of Cua Dai, just 10 minutes outside of town, you’ll find An Bang. This laid-back beach and village attract artistic types and there are plenty of bars offering lively places to party. Both beaches offer soft white sand, bright blue water, and excellent beachside restaurants.

3. Take a cooking class

Many places in Hoi An offer lessons where you can learn to make tasty local dishes. You start off by picking the raw ingredients — such as sprouts, herbs, bamboo shoots, cucumber, and other fresh veggies — at a market. Then, you learn how to prepare the food. During your class, you get to prepare traditional dishes like spring rolls, banana flower salads, Pho, and Vietnamese pancakes. Prices vary, but most cost between 700,000-1,100,000 VND. The Hoi An Eco Cooking Class is the best option for lessons and classes.

4. Take a bicycle tour

On a guided tour around the city you’ll get to explore rice fields and see some of the neighborhoods that you wouldn’t normally venture through as a tourist. A morning of bicycling around in a small group starts at around 300,000 VND. Many of them are guided by local students who offer unique perspectives on the city. Tours usually last a few hours with stops at local businesses along the way. I recommend Heaven and Earth Bicycle Tours or Grasshopper Adventures.

5. Shop at the Central Market

Hoi An’s Central Market is one of the best in Vietnam. The market sits on the riverside and is packed full of excellent food at rock-bottom prices. If you’re looking to experience the flavors of Vietnam, this is the spot. Hoi An has always been a thriving center for trade and commerce and the market has origins in the 15th century when the city was part of the empire of Cham. The market gets going as early as 6am and quickly gets busy. If you want to beat the crowds, get there early. This is the place to pick up spices and souvenirs, try local food, and have your tailoring done.

Other Things to See and Do in Hoi An

2. Visit Quan Cong Temple

The temple was built in the early 17th century to honor the Chin Dynasty, but nowadays it serves as one of Hoi An’s most spectacular architectural accomplishments. Inside there are two huge wooden statues, one of Quan Cong’s protector, Chau Xuong, and the other of his administrative official, Quan Binh. Of course, between them is the imposing statue of Quan Cong himself (also known as Zihuang), one of China’s most famous generals.

3. Experience Da Nang city

Located about 30 minutes from Hoi An, Da Nang is a bigger city famous for its Marble Mountains, sandy beaches, and active surfing scene. There is also an extravagant party scene here that is good for a night out once in a while. Most hostels can help groups of guests arrange transportation to and from Da Nang for the night.

4. Attend the Full Moon Festival

Hoi An’s Full Moon Festival is held on the 14th day of the lunar cycle each month and is probably the best time to visit the city if you don’t mind the crowds. The streets are shut down to all traffic and are lined with brightly colored lanterns. This is a fun time to party with locals as the streets come alive with folk music, plays, and dancing!

5. Take a trip to Cham Island

Cham Island lies just 21 kilometers (13 miles) from Hoi An in the South China Sea. The diverse marine life around Cham Island draws lots of divers, and because you’re in Vietnam, it’s very cheap to dive here (dives start from 000 VND). Most tours include lunch and free time on the beach, and it’s also possible to include a night dive in your excursion. If you are not into diving, a snorkeling tour costs around 1,060,000 VND.

6. See the Fujian Assembly Hall

Built in 1697, Fujian is the grandest of the Chinese assembly halls and is a first-rate example of Chinese architecture. The main colorful temple is dedicated to the goddess of the sea, Thien Hau, while the statues of Thuan Phong Nhi and Thien Ly Nhan are said to protect sailors in distress. There is a scale model of a sailboat inside too.

7. Visit the Museum of Folk Culture

This small museum aims to preserve the traditions and dress of rural Vietnamese culture. It is filled with plaster statues of figures in costumes that highlight life from here the past few centuries. There are almost 500 items in the collection and the museum is housed in a 150-year-old building. You can purchase a ticket that includes five sites of your choosing (including this museum) for 120,000 VND.

8. Head to the Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are a series of five mountains located 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Hoi An. Besides the natural appeal, they also have many pagodas, and some also served as a base for Viet Cong fighters during the Vietnamese War. To get there, take the bus from Hoi An towards Nha Trang and get off at the Marble Mountains stop. It costs 40,000 VND to access the mountains.

9. Enter the Old Houses

Some of the houses in Hoi An have had their interiors turned into museums, giving tourists a glimpse at what life was like for wealthy merchants in the colonial and pre-colonial period. The Tan Ky and the Duc An homes are two of the more popular ones to visit and shouldn’t be missed if you’re a history buff.

Hostel prices – Hostel dorms with 10 or more beds go for about 117,000 VND per night while dorms with fewer beds cost 200,000-300,000 VND per night. Keep in mind that most of Hoi An’s main attractions are in the Old Town, so if you want to spend most of your time there, make sure your accommodation isn’t too far away. Private rooms start at about 352,112 VND for a double. Most hostels include free Wi-Fi, breakfast, and bicycle rentals.

Budget hotel prices – A night in a two-star budget hotel costs around 470,000 VND for a double room. A number of hotels have pools, and most have air-conditioning. Some even include free breakfast.

On Airbnb, you can find a private room for around 275,000 VND. Entire homes or apartments (some with swimming pools) are available starting from 470,000 VND per night.

Food – Vietnamese cuisine is fresh, flavorful, and uses a lot of herbs and vegetables. Rice and noodle dishes are common, as are various soups such as the iconic pho (a beef noodle soup). Wonton soup, meat curry, fresh French bread (known as banh me , and grilled fish are just some of the popular dishes you’ll encounter. Standard ingredients include fish sauce, lemongrass, chili, lime, Thai basil, and mint.

Street food starts at 15,000 VND per meal. Meals in restaurants start at about 30,000 VND and go up from there. You can get delicious banh mi at Bahn Mi Phuong for less than 46,440 VND. Wine is expensive so I would skip it (especially in restaurants).

Fast food (think burger and fries) costs around 120,000 VND for a combo meal. If you want to splash out, a nice meal at a mid-range restaurant costs around 175,000 VND.

Beer costs 20,000-30,000 VND. Coffee costs about 20,000-30,000 VND.

Food is so cheap here that I would not recommend cooking your food. Just grab street food, eat cheap, and you’ll save. It will cost you more in time and money to make your own meals.

Backpacking Hoi An Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget, you can visit Hoi An for 600,000 VND per day. This budget covers a stay in a hostel dorm, eating street food for all of your meals (pho and banh mi are very filling!), limiting your drinking, walking or cycling everywhere, and doing mostly free activities like enjoying the beach. If you plan on drinking, add another 20,000-40,000 VND to your daily budget.

A mid-range budget of about 1,125,000 VND per day covers staying in a cheap hotel, eating street food and at the occasional sit-down restaurant, enjoying a few more drinks, taking the occasional taxi to get around, and doing more paid activities such as museum visits and river tours.

On a “luxury” budget of 2,460,000 VND, you can stay in a nice hotel, eat out for all your meals anywhere you want, enjoy lots of drinks, and more taxis, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day. Who knows?). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in VND.

Hoi An Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Your dollar goes a long way in Hoi An (like it does in the rest of Vietnam)! That said, it never hurts to save even more money! Here are some ways to save in Hoi An:

Camp on Cham Island – If you’re heading to Cham Island on a diving trip, it’s possible to save money on accommodation by camping on the beach.
Shop around for handmade clothing – There are hundreds of tailors in Hoi An. If you’re having clothing made, check prices with a few places before settling on one. Asking a local to bring you to a tailor they trust is also a good suggestion.
Skip the SIM Card – Hoi An is highly connected to Wi-Fi. You can access the Wi-Fi in just about every hotel, shop, restaurant, and convenience store for free!
Eat at the market – Market stalls are some of the cheapest food you can find. Enjoy everything from Vietnamese donuts, banh mi , to soups and food with more substance — all for super cheap!
Rent a bicycle – Bikes can be rented starting from 30,000 VND per day. This is a great way to leisurely explore the city.
Drink in hostels – Lots of hostels have bars, cafes, restaurants, or something that acts as all three. Hostel owners know their audience, so they keep their prices down to keep people in their space. Win-win!
Pack a reusable water bottle – The tap water here isn’t safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle with a filter. It will save you money and thousands of plastic bottles. My preferred bottle is LifeStraw as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Hoi An

Hoi An has some of the most affordable accommodation options in Vietnam. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in the city (if you want to be close to the Old Town make sure to check the distance from these hostels before booking):

How to Get Around Hoi An

Everywhere in central Hoi An is within walking distance, so it’s unlikely you’ll spend much on transportation here. The city is small (there are just 152,000 people here) and walking the Old Town is part of the experience.

Bicycle or Motorbike – If you choose to explore, you can rent a bicycle for about 30,000 VND or a motorbike for 165,000 VND per day. The Old Town is closed to motor traffic during certain hours of the day, but you’ll be able to take your bicycle in there. Many hostels/hotels have bicycle rentals available as well.

Cyclo – Cyclos (bicycle rickshaws) are common within the Old Town, and they make a leisurely way to get around. The cyclos can hold up to two people at a time and the drivers are super friendly and often keen to point out landmarks. You can negotiate a fixed hourly rate, or expect to pay about 22,000 VND per kilometer.

Taxi – The taxis are metered (and cheap) here. They start around 20,000 VND for the first kilometer and around 27,000 VND per kilometer after that. Grabbing a taxi from the airport to the center of the city should take about 30 minutes and costs about 200,000-330,000 VND. Don’t go in an unmetered taxi.

Car rental – You won’t need a car to get around Hoi An, and I wouldn’t recommend driving here as the roads are very hectic and the rules are almost never followed. Accidents are common so skip the car rental here.

When to Go to Hoi An

Hoi An is warm the whole year round, with an average daily temperature of 29°C (84°F). It rarely ever goes below 19°C (66°F) here. Unlike Northern Vietnam, Hoi An only has two seasons: rainy, and dry.

February through May is the best time to visit Hoi An thanks to pleasant daily temperatures and endless blue skies. If you want to hit the beaches (like Cua Dai and An Bang) this is also an excellent time to come.

June through August are the hottest months, with temperatures soaring as high as 38°C (100°F). Humidity can be high as well.

Hoi An’s rainy season lasts from September to January, with frequent heavy rain showers. These showers typically do not last long, but Hoi An has been prone to flooding in the past. Tourism traffic is also slowest during this time so expect lower prices.

If you want some excitement during your visit, plan your trip around the 14th day of the month’s lunar cycle. This is Hoi An’s Full Moon Festival and the city comes alive with music, dance, and celebrations.

How to Stay Safe in Hoi An

Hoi An is a very safe place to backpack and travel – even if you’re traveling solo or as a solo female traveler. Violent crime against travelers is infrequent, and petty crime isn’t a huge deal here either. In crowded places (especially the markets) you’ll want to keep your purse/wallet close and be mindful of the activity around you.

Be on the alert for scams. Most people are really just going to try to nickel and dime you and try to get you to spend extra money since they know, as a tourist, you have more than they do. Just keep an eye out.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

The most important piece of safety advice I can offer is to purchase suitable travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations.
