The Best 7 Day Trips from Trinidad Cuba [2024]

The gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage city of Trinidad is a must-see on any trip to Cuba.   There’s a whole lot of history here that has shaped the city and some stunning architecture in the centre.  Sometimes, though, it’s nice to get out of the city.  So leave your casa particular or hotel behind and let’s go and explore some of the best days trips from Trinidad, Cuba.   As you’ve come this far along the island of Cuba, it’s worth taking the time to explore some of the things to do near Trinidad, there are some great excursions, beaches and historic places to visit.

The main things to do close to Trinidad revolve around either the Caribbean Sea, the nearby National Park or the sugar plantation history.  Here are our recommendations of what to see and do near Trinidad, Cuba.

#1 DAY TRIP

Visit Topes de Collantes National Park

This is an unforgettable part of Cuba – this tour gets 9.5/10 on a regular basis – and is perfect for a Trinidad day trip.

Best things to do near Trinidad Cuba

Using Trinidad as a base is a great way to see some of the historical areas close to the city and also explore some of the nicest beaches in Cuba too.  As with most things to see and do in Cuba it is possible to arrange day trips from Trinidad once you’ve arrived, but it’s so much easier to plan it ahead of time.    If you’re able to plan and arrange ahead of time any day trips from Trinidad that you want to take, then simply ask at your Casa Particular when you arrive.  You’ll likely pay a premium for organizing things last minute and you may only be able to arrange Spanish only speaking drivers and guides, but this is Cuba, and anything and everything is always possible.

1. Visit the Topes de Collantes National Park from Trinidad

The Topes de Collantes National Park is on the doorstep of Trinidad, Cuba.   These encompass Cuba’s second-highest mountain range (after the Sierra Maestra), the Sierra del Escambray.    The Topes de Collantes is one of the largest protected reserves in Cuba – there are immense waterfalls here, grottos, loads of flora and fauna, and some fabulous natural pools to swim in. You’ll want to see El Mirador – a 1,640-foot (500-meter) panoramic point, which gives amazing views of the Valle de Los Ingenios, Trinidad, and the Caribbean Sea.

There’s also a coffee plantation here, where three varieties of coffee are grown: arabica, robusta, and liberian. Sound good? This awesome tour will take you to all of these places in the Topes Collantes National Park.

The Topes de Collantes National Park covers 68 square miles and is a great cool refuge from the heat of Trinidad.  You can take a 4×4 tour to the Topes de Collantes nature reserve, or there are a variety of hiking trails here, waterfalls to visit (and swim in) and it’s possible also to visit on horseback. 2. Go Horse Riding in The Parque El Cubano Natural Park from Trinidad

Take a half-day trip from Trinidad to the magnificent El Cubano Natural Park . Leaving your casa particular or hotel at 0900 you’ll be taken by bus to meet your horse for the trip. And don’t worry you’ll be given basic training and assistance if you’ve not ridden much before. Ride through the forest to a waterfall, where you can take an hour of relaxation and a dip in the pool under the falls. Ride then to a restaurant, where you’re free to eat lunch and then return to where you started and head back to Trinidad by 1400.

3. Visit Playa Ancon from Trinidad

One of the most famous beaches near Trinidad, this white sand beach is easily reached by taxi colectivo or (perhaps a little less easily by bike).  Hotels line the beach here and have restaurants where you can grab lunch or drinks.  The sea is crystal clear and gloriously blue – if you don’t have snorkel gear, then rent some from your Casa Particular – if they don’t have any, they’ll know someone who has!

Prebook this fabulous trip to Playa Ancon from Trinidad – you can prepay it – and so save your cash in Cuba, but you’ll also get EIGHT hours of free time in Playa Ancon. You’ll be transported in a Classic Car – and believe me, you’ll feel like a king or a queen traveling in one of those.

Playa Ancon is about 12 kilometers (8 miles) from Trinidad, located on the Ancon Peninsula.  The white sand beach stretches for 2 miles at the end of a peninsula.  There is a coral reef just offshore and the beach stretches around 4 kilometres. There’s good snorkelling here and also diving at around 30 dive sites.  You can pick up a tour to Playa Ancon for snorkelling or diving from the Brisas del Mar Trinidad and any of the Playa Ancon hotels.  You’ll pay around US$45. Book now and pre plan at least one of your Trinidad trips!

If you do spend the day on the beach be sure to secure your valuables. We use and recommend portable travel safes. Here’s the best portable travel safes for Cuba.

If you go to Playa Ancon from Trinidad by taxi it will take about 15 minutes.  Cycling from Trinidad to Playa Ancon takes about 40-45 minutes. If you go for a bike rental, then test everything is working before you set off – organise through your casa particular.  In the unlikely event that they can’t provide one, go to Hostal Victor and ask there.  If you cycle to Playa Ancon you should stop via the slightly longer more scenic route of the small village of La Boca (we stayed here it is gloriously quiet after the tourist throng of Trinidad!).  You may need to pay a small fee to rent a sunshade and have someone look after your bikes, but it’s not bad for a day out at the beach!

If you want to go further afield, take a boat trip from Playa Ancon to Cayo Blanco, where you can dive and snorkel the reef there.

4. Visit Cayo Blanco from Trinidad, Cuba

Boats to Cayo Blanco depart from the Trinidad Marina, which is actually located at Playa Ancon, so you’ll need to check when you book a trip from Trinidad to Cayo Blanco whether your transport to the marina is included or whether you’ll need to take a taxi.  Most trips to Cayo Blanco depart via catamaran from the marina at 0900 to 0930 and include the use of snorkelling gear.  There is usually a bar on board and lunch is included.  The reef here is lovely.

5. Hike to the Salto Del Caburni Waterfall as a day trip from Trinidad

The most challenging and most popular trail in the Topes de Collantes and worthy of mention on its own is the 8-kilometre round trip hike to the Salto Del Caburni waterfall.  The trail starts at the Casa de La Gallega (you can pick up snacks and lunch there too) and finishes at the waterfall, which drops some 246ft (75 metres).  The swimming hole is refreshing, to say the least.  The trail to the Salto Del Caburni is well-marked and skirts through palm, pine, and eucalyptus trees.  The trail is often muddy and narrow with sharp ascents and descents and is challenging.

6. Visit the Valle de Los Ingenios from Trinidad Cuba

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valle de Los Ingenios is a lush green valley of sugar cane fields palm trees, and surrounding mountains.   The name, Valle de Los Ingenios, means the valley of the sugar mills and it’s here you’ll find relics from the sugar cane plantations and sugar mills of the area. This is the number 1 day trip from Trinidad, Cuba that isn’t a beach visit.

At its peak, its thought that more than 30,000 slaves were working in the plantation and mills here, at what was the sugar capital of the world.  This is the area that contributed the most to the wealth that was concentrated in Trinidad.  There were once 60 sugar mills here.

There is a tourist steam train that runs (occasionally) from Trinidad and breaks down often.  If the train is running then it leaves Trinidad every day at 0930 and leaves from Manaca Iznaga at 1330.  The journey time by train is around 30 minutes.  Tickets for the round trip cost US$10, payable in local currency ( read our guide to Cuban currency here ) and you can buy them from any tour operator in town, or at the train station, which is half a mile from central Trinidad, on Calle Antonio Guiteras Final. 

As of September 1, 2022, the tourist train is running again. You’ll need to check locally for running times (ask your Casa Particular owner), and book tickets as soon as you can, as there are only two carriages running.

Alternatively, check with your Casa Particular owner.  If the train is not running then a replacement bus may run for US$19 – again check with your Casa Particular owner.

However, because of all the uncertainty about trains and buses, the best way to visit the Valle de Los Ingenios from Trinidad is to take a tour.  Local buses and colectivos don’t necessarily come here – so if you want to take a shared taxi – a colectivo, get a group together, or take an organized tour.  The points of interest in the Valle de Los Ingenios that you’ll want to see are:

• The Mirador de La Loma Del Puerto’s – this lookout gives you great views of the entire valley.
• The Manaza Iznaga Tower – this 44-metre high (147 feet) tower has great views and was previously used to both watch slaves at work in the fields and also spot runaway slaves.  From here you can see the remnants of the main house and climb the tower.   There was once a huge bell hung there that tolled for the slaves in the fields signalling the beginning and end of their working days.
• Casa Guachinango – an 18 th -century house owned by the Borrell family – there’s a restaurant here that you may wish to visit for lunch. You’ll also be able to see the local River Ay here.

7. Visit La Boca as a day trip from Trinidad, Cuba

If you’ve stayed in Trinidad but want to get away from the city and explore places a little more local, then rent a bike or grab a taxi to La Boca.  You’ll pay between US$5-8 for a taxi in pesos.  La Boca means “the mouth” and it’s the mouth of the river on the coast.  It’s a small village, with several Casa Particulars, a few local bars and one or 2 restaurants.  It’s got a very local vibe and it’s much more chilled out than either Trinidad or Playa Ancon.  You can swim and snorkel here from the shore.

While visitors can’t enter the Palacio del Gobierno, visiting Palacio Ferrer is a highlight! The museum on the bottom floor has interesting rotating exhibits, and the grand ballrooms and salons on the upper floors are quite ornate. Make sure to take in the views from the balconies as well.

From here, head towards the Paseo del Prado with its famous statue of Benny Moré, one of the legends of Cuban music. This avenue, with a pedestrian thoroughfare down the center, is a great way to get around the city.

2. Walk the Malecón

Havana might be the best-known city in Cuba for its Malcón sea wall, but Cienfuegos has its own impressive Malecón as well. While the Cienfuegos Malecón isn’t oceanfront – it faces the large Cienfuegos Bay – it’s still quite impressive and is a great spot for views. Along the way, you’ll find cafes and restaurants, as well as impressively renovated historic buildings.

Walking along the Cienfuegos Malecón is the best way to reach the stunning Palacio del Valle on La Punta (unless you want to take a bus or taxi), so save your Malecón stroll for when you plan to visit this palace or any other more upscale spots on Punta Gorda.

3. Take a Free Walking Tour

4. Visit El Nicho Waterfall

There’s no better way to cool off after a long day under the Cuban sun than taking a swim below a jungle waterfall. One of Cuba’s most famous waterfalls, El Nicho, is located just an hour outside of Cienfuegos in the stunning Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes , making it a perfect day trip from Cienfuegos.

In the park, you’ll be able to experience several waterfalls and swimming holes, though El Nicho is the most impressive. Despite its growing fame, El Nicho is still quite off the beaten path and doesn’t feel overwhelmed with tourists or visitors.

While there isn’t public transportation out to the park, you’ll likely be able to share a taxi with other travelers, which is a great way to save on the cost. Or, you can schedule a small-group excursion to El Nicho ahead of time via Civitatis , which is a great hassle-free option.

Headed to Trinidad after you visit Cienfuegos? Consider traveling onward from here after your day trip to Topes de Collantes, as Topes de Collantes is about halfway between Cienfuegos and Trinidad and is a great way to break up the trip while enjoying one of the best things to do in Cienfuegos.

One of the most impressive buildings in Cienfuegos is undeniably the Teatro Tomás Terry , the city’s grand theater in the heart of old town Cienfuegos. Ornate frescos on the ceiling, gilded decor, and plush red velvet curtains set the stage for an unexpected historic gem that you can’t miss – a visit is among the very best things to do in Cienfuegos.

While the entrance to the theater costs just a few dollars and is well worth it, try to catch a show here to see the theater in all its glory. The stunning curved box seating and spacious floor area are all the more enchanting when filled with an adoring crowd!

6. Enjoy Sunset Drinks From a Rooftop

For some of the best views of the bay, head down the Malecón towards Punta Gorda (La Punta) as the afternoon turns to evening and head to a rooftop to take in the sunset.

You’ll find tons of options for this, and part of the experience is just exploring this lovely neighborhood and stumbling upon hidden gems as you go. It may sound simple, but it’s one of the best things to do in Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Camila’s is a waterfront bar and restaurant with a dock which makes for a fabulous evening overlooking the water – we couldn’t recommend this place enough! It’s also one of the best places to stay in Cienfuegos . Hotel Jagua also has a stunning pool deck with great views, which is definitely worth at least a visit.

7. Hit the Beach (At The Bay of Pigs)

While you’ve certainly heard of the Bay of Pigs before, I’d bet it’s not in this context! Known as the site of the failed U.S. invasion of Cuba after the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de los Cochinos) is actually one of the best beach destinations on Cuba’s southern coast.

An easy day trip from Cienfuegos, the Bay of Pigs is a great spot for a beach excursion from Cienfuegos, with some of the areas of best beaches like Playa Girón and Playa Larga. The water at these sandy beaches is known to be incredibly clear, and the nearby reef makes for some excellent snorkeling and swimming.

An international dive center here makes it a great spot for scuba diving, with all the needed gear easily accessible. It’s a great activity to enjoy in one of the destinations we consider to be among the best places to visit in Cuba .

If you’re looking for a longer stopover, consider adding a stay at nearby Ciénaga de Zapata to your itinerary as well. It’s one of the best places for hiking in Cuba and is filled with stunning and unique wildlife, with everything from endemic birds to crocodiles.

8. Explore Ciénaga de Zapata

Ciénaga de Zapata – the Zapata Swampland – may sound less than appealing, but trust us, this natural gem is a great destination for a day trip from Cienfuegos or even a longer stay. Just over an hour and a half from Cienfuegos, this national park is home to impressive wildlife, stunning vistas, and great adventure sports like kayaking, biking, and hiking through lush landscapes.

There is plenty to see and do here, from world-class birding excursions to see the dozens of endemic species in the swampland to kayaking adventures where you’ll spot everything from crocodiles to flamingos.

A guided visit is a requirement for entering this national park, and it’s all for the better; the guides are truly excellent and offer a range of excursions, routes, and activities to explore the park.

Whether you want to pair a visit to the Bay of Pigs with a trip to Ciénaga de Zapata or not, this fascinating and unique destination in Cuba is definitely worth an addition to your itinerary. 9. Tour Palacio del Valle

Yet another historic architectural gem in Cienfuegos, the Palacio del Valle at the end of the Malecón is an absolutely stunning building, making a visit one of the best things to do in Cienfuegos by far. With its unique mix of architectural styles, it’s totally unique to almost anything else you’ll see in Cuba.

While the ornate exterior is worth countless photos, don’t skip out on taking a tour of the interior of the palace! Both the interior and the exterior are quite well preserved, and the palace’s countless rooms and salons are just as ornate as the exterior portends!

There is a restaurant and bar on the rooftop, and while items here are a little on the pricey side for Cienfuegos, it does boast incredible views. This can be a great place to enjoy a sunset beverage overlooking the bay before exploring the rest of the neighborhood, one of the best things to do in Cienfuegos.

10. Visit Poco Bonito Gallery

Cienfuegos isn’t all historic architecture and natural gems; it’s also filled with galleries, restaurants, cultural events, and plenty of signs of things to come in Cuba. Make sure to take in a bit of this other side of the city with a stop at Poco Bonito Gallery , home to the work of several impressive Cuban artists.

You’ll get to see plenty of new works on display and likely get to meet and chat with some of the artists or even see them in action. Just two blocks from Parque Jose Martí, it is easily accessible from the heart of the city and makes for a great addition to your time in Cienfuegos . You’ll love meeting some of the most inspiring young minds in the city.

Si acabáis de llegar al destino más popular de Florida , este free tour por Miami es imprescindible. Recorreremos el Downtown , el distrito más céntrico de la ciudad. ¡No os lo podéis perder!

A la hora indicada comenzaremos este free tour por el Downtown de Miami desde el Miami Bull , una famosa escultura de un toro que se ha convertido en todo un símbolo de la ciudad. ¿Sabéis por qué? ¡Lo descubriremos!

A lo largo de este recorrido por el distrito centro de Miami , combinaremos tramos a pie con otros trayectos en Metromover , un tren monorraíl gratuito que recorre las principales zonas de la ciudad. De este modo, tendremos una visión más amplia del destino más popular del estado de Florida .

En primer lugar, contemplaremos la fachada de la universidad pública Miami Dale College y de la emblemática iglesia Gesu . Desde allí, nos dirigiremos hacia las orillas de Biscayne Bay , donde veremos la Torre de la Libertad . Esta atalaya, que fue construida en 1925, está inspirada en el campanario de una famosa catedral española. ¡Os desvelaremos de cuál se trata!

Continuaremos la ruta en Bayfront Park , un popular parque donde nos detendremos ante la estatua de Juan Ponce de León . Este aventurero español del siglo XVI fue el primer explorador europeo de Florida . Tras conocer su historia, seguiremos recorriendo el parque para observar la escultura de otro destacado personaje. Se trata de Julia Tuttle , una importante empresaria del siglo XIX considerada como “la madre de Miami” .

Finalmente, tras un recorrido de dos horas, concluiremos el free tour en Brickel Point , desde donde disfrutaremos de unas magníficas vistas de los rascacielos del Downtown de Miami .
