November has so many events and festivals to take advantage of, you might have a hard time trying to fit everything in!

All-around Greece

St Andrews Name Day –  If you have Greek friends or are just very well informed, you might know that Greeks celebrate name days rather than birthdays (or did nevertheless before the western custom of birthdays became popular). Name days are celebrations on a saint’s feast day. Almost every person in Greece has a name day because most Greeks are baptized into the Orthodox church and thus carry a Christian name. The 30 th  of November is a massive celebration around Greece and every household that has members that share this name. I wish I could break the stereotype but if you know one person with this name then chances are there at least a few cousins or relatives sharing it in their family. My family? Five Andrews/Andriana’s and counting!

17 th of November –   This day is observed as a holiday around Greece in celebration of the student uprising of 1973. The uprising was in response to the dictatorial rule and military regime of the Colonels that started in 1967 and would last until 1974. Athens Polytechnic students went on strike on November 14 th which began to escalate in tension and lasted until November 17 th when the strike was broken by a tank crashing through the gates of the university. Approximately 40 people are said to have been wounded or fatally injured. Universities remain closed on this day and commemorative services take place as well as wreath-laying ceremonies. Protests take place every year and the downtown area of Athens from the Polytechnic till the United States Embassy is usually flooded with people singing slogans that were used during the original uprising, namely “Bread-Education-Freedom” and the national anthem. Due to increased social unrest, heavy police presence and tension between different groups the area is best to be avoided by visitors and tourists in the area.

21 st of November-  This is one of the main and most important celebrations of the Orthodox Church that is known in Greece as “the entry of the Virgin Mary or “The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary” in the Catholic Church. This is a day that always falls within the Christmas fasting period, in which abstinence from dairy, meat, oil, wine and fish is encouraged. However, on the 21st of November, there is an exemption for fish and oil-eating. Some women with the name Maria, Despina, or Panagiota which are other names for the Virgin Mary, have a name celebration on this day. I say, only some because the 21st of November is often reserved for young “virgins” or unmarried women whereas the 15th of August (another day in celebration of the Virgin Mary ) is celebrated by married women. In case of doubt, the easiest thing if you know a lot of Maria’s or Mary’s is to simply ask if they are indeed celebrating!

Athens Classic Marathon – If you are a runner then you must be aware of the ultimate marathon race in the world, the classic Athens Marathon. This sport owes its name to the town of Marathon, from where Pheilippides, a Greek messenger, is said to have started running until reaching Athens, in order to announce the victorious result of the Battle of Marathon that took place in 490 BC. According to the story, Pheilippides ran more than 40 km and died from exhaustion soon after. The 38 th  annual event always takes place in early November with thousands of participants from around the world.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival –   This year marked the 60th International Film Festival in Thessaloniki that is one of the most established and popular events of the year. Events take place in the space of about 11 days in different cinemas and venues around the city with a focus on showcasing the work of “subversive filmmakers from all around the world”.

Thessaloniki Piano Festival –   This is another beloved event that has been taking place in Thessaloniki since 2012 and has despite the harsh reality of the economic situation in the country, remained a successful event that attracts plenty of local and international visitors. More than 15 events take place within the space of 2 weeks that showcase a diverse pool of talent, spanning different genres and encourage artistic expression.

Amorgos Tourism Film Festival –  Fancy an excuse for leaving the mainland or flying into the stunning island of Amorgos ? The annual Tourism Film Festival is a 4-day event packed with screenings that showcase the island of Amorgos and the Cyclades island complex in general, encourage cooperation and collaboration between the island and other film producers and visitors from Greece or internationally and celebrates artistic mediums and their contribution to societal problems like sustainability in tourism.

Chania Film Festival –   If you are in Crete island in early November make your way to the charming port city of Chania that charms everyone with its romantic vibe and Venetian architecture. For more than a week, thousands of people come together to watch the best films from around the world. There are plenty of workshops, classes and exhibitions that take place around this time as well.

Nafplio Castle Run –  Another relatively new event that has been picking up incredible support in its 6 th year running. Excuse the pun! Yes, yes, yes, we all love Greece in the summer. The sexy feel of the sun on our backs, the aroma of grilled octopus in the air, the soothing sound of the waves, the music lingering in the air from the nearby bars. You get the picture. But have you ever thought of  visiting Greece in the fall ? 

Let me give you  that  picture: wonderfully mild weather, not too hot, not too cold, calm waters that are still warm, crowd-free beaches, peace and quiet, no traffic, low-volume chit-chat at the  kafeneio  (coffeehouse), and the catch of the day at the one or two operating tavernas where all the locals gather and share their tales.

If this sounds more like you, then  visit Greece in October, November and December (added bonus Greek Christmas!). You won’t regret it. 

I always travel and swim during these three months and believe me this  quieter experience of Greece  is totally different to the summer. And although it saddens me to say, with global warming showing its teeth, more and more people are planning their holidays off season. And that’s great for two reasons: we’re burdening cities and towns less and we’re getting a more genuine experience of the places we visit.

That said, allow me to suggest the  best Greek islands to visit in November , the reasons why you should, and what to expect. 

Kefalonia is undeniably one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, and the reason behind my view is that it combines so many different landscapes and beaches, it has managed to preserve its  traditional character , it is large and it is home to a large permanent population which means businesses are open all year round and there are many things to see and do.

Musts : Myrtos Beach, Xi beach, Melissani Cave, Robolla wine, and the food and local sweets. 

Weather in November : Just right around 20 degrees Celsius (around 70 degrees F), mild temperatures overall in November, little rain, and sea water temps around the same at 20.6°C.

How to Get There : from Athens to Kefalonia Airport or directly from major European cities. ——Another option is to take the bus from Athens via  KTEL intercity services  which takes you to a ferry. You can also take the ferry from Kyllini near Patra.

Where do I even begin to describe Crete . In one word: blessed. The largest  Greek island is also the southernmost island so it has the  warmest weather  all year round. If there’s one place in Greece where you’ll definitely find what you’re dreaming of, Crete is it. The ultimate beaches for every taste, local traditions and music, luxury stays or all-inclusive resorts – if that’s your thing – mountain eco-retreats, tranquil villages by the sea. What more could you ask for. I always tell readers,  just do Crete . I’ve been there over and over again and still haven’t seen it all.

Weather in November : Perfect. Ideal for the adventure lovers who want to hike Crete’s many gorges like the one in Samaria; sea and sun lovers, or for those of you keen on visiting the dozens of very significant ancient sites like the Palace of Knossos, the Minoan Palace of Zakros or Phaistos. Expect little rain and temperatures around 22-20 °C or around 70F. Sea water temps at around 20°C (70F) particularly in the south.

How to Get There : From Athens to one of Crete’s airports in Chania or Heraklion depending on where you’ll be staying or take the night ferry from Piraeus.

Musts:  the Palace of Knossos, the Venetian Harbor in Chania, Anogia village, definitely a tour of southern Crete, the Sitia Geopark, Balos, Falarsana, Fragokastello, Seitan Limani, the food (simply the best), the honey, the dancing, the beaches.

Aegina – Agistri

A pair of underrated islands  very close to Athens , which I also recommend you visit if you’re in the Greek capital and are short of time. In addition to the local ways which are alive and well in Aegina thanks to its many permanent residents, many of them artists, a visit to the beautifully preserved ancient Temple of Aphaia is well worth it. Aegina has some really nice beaches with turquoise waters and life in the town is the closest you’ll get to genuine Greece. Make sure to visit neighboring Agistri too – a 15-minute boat ride. You can literally discover the whole island on foot.

Weather in November : Pleasant all year round. And thanks to both islands’ location near mainland Greece, they enjoy mild temperatures around 21-22°C or 71F with waters in the same range and bays protected from the winds.

How to Get There : From the port of Piraeus in under an hour by ferry or by high speed in 20 minutes. There are also regular day boats from Aegina to Agistri.

Musts:  The Temple of Aphaia which is thousands of years old, the medieval settlement in Paliochora, the monastery of Agios Nektarios, the healing waters in Souvala, try and buy the island’s famous nut the  Aegina pistachio ,  and  enjoy a meze  with some ouzo on the port.

Small and sweet, this Greek isle has a very  romantic vintage feel  to it, a handful of nice sandy beaches and secret coves, a beautiful seafront to enjoy lunch or dinner, and ideal for those of you who like doing everything  on foot or by bike . No need for a car here. Many permanent residents here to mainly because it’s minutes away from the mainland.

Weather in November : Poros enjoys mild temperatures, making it an ideal destination for exploring historic sites and taking leisurely strolls. Expect temperatures around 21-23°C (70F), warm water and a random shower. 

How to Get There : By ferry from the port of Piraeus about ——or  by car   in an hour and 15 minutes and once  you get to Galatas on the mainland in the Peloponnese, a 10-minute ferry ride. You could always  choose a mini-cruise out of Athens to Poros , which also includes Hydra (Leonard Cohen’s favorite isle – he actually had a holiday home there) and Aegina  (see above) . 

Musts:  Definitely visit  Love Bay,  hop   over to the mainland and visit the “Lemonodasos” (Lemon Tree Forest) and you’ll see (and smell) why it inspired poets and writers. Stroll through the well-preserved Hora, visit the monastery of Zoodochou Pigis (which means Lifegiving Source), and explore the site where a sanctuary to the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, once stood. 

►  Swimming in Greece Fall or Winter: The Tips

Syros, the  capital of Cyclades  islands complex, is a perfect escape in the fall and winter and during  Easter . It is one of the few islands together with Tinos that is home to a  large Catholic community . This is where  Markos Vamvakaris , the ‘father of the rebetiko’ or  Greek blues , was born and composed his songs. Syros today is a lively center of the arts, sports, music, animation and theater running dozens of cultural programs and festivals all year round and is very proud of its La Scala-inspired  grand theater. It was on this island where Greece’s first shipyard operated. Unlike its surrounding white-washed Cyclades isles like Tinos and Mykonos, Syros is very stately and this is due to its active role in the  1821 War of Independence  as well as to the wealth of its tradesmen. The lower part of Ermoupoli features a theater-like setting complete with magnificent mansions overlooking the harbor. 

Weather in November : Syros also enjoys great weather in November with temps around 21-22°C (or 71F) and warm waters making it a great time to explore its culture and history.

How to Get There : You can reach Syros by ferry from the port of Piraeus (2 hours and 20 minutes) and from Rafina (about 2 hours). 

Musts:  The lower part or Ermoupoli – the capital – and its splendid mansions overlooking the harbor and the upper part – Ano Syros – this is closer to the Greek islands you all know with narrow paths and a Medieval aura. The Apollo Theater, the Catholic St George’s Cathedral, the Church of Saint John, City Hall. Buy loukoumi and halvadopita sweets and San Michali cheese.

Another underrated Greek island home to some of the best preserved villages and architecture in the Cyclades is Tinos . Amazing beaches for every taste and weather condition, the  finest food  and wine in the Cyclades, lots of art. The island’s marble craft is  listed on UNESCO’s protected world heritage list , locally-made sweets to die for. Here too, there are both  Catholic and Orthodox  communities and dozens of chapels and monasteries.

Weather in November : The weather on Tinos is a bit  unpredictable . In the summer its winds are gusty but in the winter they die down. Temperatures in November are pleasant around 20°C or 70F and the waters from 15-20°C depending on the beach and time of day.

How to Get There : Travel to Tinos by ferry from Piraeus port – a 5-hour trip – or from Rafina about 1.50 minutes with a high-speed ferry or 4 hours with the regular ferry. You will need to drive or take the bus to Rafina which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. 

Musts : The Church of Panagia Evangelistria or “Megalocharis” (The Gift Giving), the villages of Pyrgos for its marble art, the village of Volax right out of a science fiction film, the catholic church in Ktikados, Kardiani and Isternia villages, Kechrvouni Monastery, the Museums of Tinian Artists (Panormos), the Marble Crafts Museum (Pyrgos), the Tsoklis contemporary art museum, Pachia Ammos and Agios Fokas beaches, ouzo at Panormos, the soft white cheese (hard to find, ask around), the food, and the “amygdalota” sweets from Halaris!

Lefkada is a  low key island  with some of the country’s finest beaches and ideal for  sailing lovers. The special thing about Lefkada is that you can get there by car thanks a floating pontoon (bridge) which connects it to the Akarnania mainland. Cool! 

Weather in November : Lefkada has nice weather in November and no winds, making it a great choice for sailing, swimming and outdoor activities.

How to Get There : Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so you can easily drive there or take the KTEL bus from Athens or other major cities in Greece.

Musts:  Make sure to go to Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma white-sand beaches, rent a bike and ride around town, visit Agia Mavra Castle, rent a sailboat, hike to the Nydri waterfalls, discover the Marantochori Lagoon, do the Fabbrica Olive Museum. Buy Eglouvi lentils, locally-produce salami and mandolata sweets.

You will never get bored on Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades, with a strong year-round population and a vast history. Unlike the other Cyclades islands, Naxos’ landscape includes tall mountains and fertile valleys. That’s why it is famous for both its meats and dairy products, particularly its cheeses. It’s an ideal destination for history and mythology lovers. Zas Cave, for instance, where Zeus was said to have spent his childhood years, has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. 

Weather in November : Due to its size and mountains, Naxos has some rain in November and is pretty cool at around 17-18C. However, the waters are generally cold in the summer too. So expect water temperatures to be around 15-17°C (59-64F). Again it depends on the beach too. Some are colder than others. 

► 10 + 1 Perfect Places to Visit in Greece in Fall or Winter

How to Get There : By plane from Athens to Naxos airport, or by ferry from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina. The trip lasts about four hours and approximately 2.5 hours on a high-speed boat.

Musts:  visit the 8-meter-high Portara, the ancient marble gate on the side of the port; the village of  Apeiranthos , sit on the ‘’plateia” (main square) in Halki and enjoy village life in action. Take a stroll through the Venetian Castro overlooking the Chora. Learn more about the lemon-citrus liquor “kitron” at the Vallindras Distillery and museum, which has been distilling the liqueur since 1896. Swim   at one of its many perfect beaches with crystal clear waters and ultra-fine sand. Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Agios Georgios are my favorites. Visit the Folk Museum   in Chora, and hike your way to the  lost kouros  – a large marble statue of a male youth dating back to the  6th and 7th centuries BC – the largest (10 meter-tall) is near the fishing village of Apollonas. Try and buy graviera (gruyere), afromyzithra, kopanisti and Arseniko cheeses, kitron, wine and potatoes.

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is incredible and full of surprises. This Greek island is for the most part a protected breeding and nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta. Expect the most beautiful sandy beaches with welcoming waters and some great food. The island’s famous nightlife slows down in November.

Weather in November : The weather and waters on Zakynthos are warm and welcoming. Expect mild temperatures in November at around 18-19°C or 64-66F and the sea water is around the same particularly at Laganas beach. The warm temperatures are actually why the turtles breed here!

How to Get There : from Athens you could fly to Zakynthos Airport or directly from major European cities. Another option is to take the bus from Athens via  KTEL intercity services which takes you to a ferry. You can also take the ferry from Kyllini near Patra.

Musts:  Go to Laganas Beach, Porto Limnionas, Tsilvi and do some snorkeling at Keri Caves; walk around Zakynthos Town; go to Bochali and indulge in the local “frygania” sweet overlooking the town and sea; take a boat tour or admire Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), one of the most famous and photographed beaches in the world; take a boat tour of the Blue Caves;  catch a “mandolinata” (a mandolin ensemble) performing traditional  Ionian island “cantadas ” or serenades on Solomos Square; taste local wines; visit the villages of Volimes and Keri and its lighthouse; 

visit the  National Marine Park of Zakynthos  which spans from Cape Marathias to Gerakas, this is the Caretta caretta turtle nesting area.

So yes, November is a great time to visit Greece and to actually experience a very different, more relaxed and intimate type of holiday away from the mayhem of summer. However, I do want to give you some tips to make sure you make the best of your trip to Greece off season.

✓  First and foremost: there are fewer ferry services off-season, and traveling to smaller islands will need some extra planning ahead . However, the islands I mention above usually enjoy regular services due to the large number of permanent residents. In any case, check schedules and book ferry tickets in advance , as there might be limited availability.

✓  If you’re taking the ferry to the islands from Rafina have in mind to include the hour-longbus ride to the port from Athens which departs from the Pedion tou Areos Park every half hour.  Schedule here   

✓  Many hotels and short-stays (Airbnbs) offer lower rates in November plus it’s much easier to find accommodation suitable to your needs.

✓  Visiting Greece in November gives you the chance to experience local life and culture. Mingle with the locals at restaurants, cafes and bars.

✓  Water activities like swimming and water sports may be limited, but you will definitely enjoy things like hiking, sightseeing, and exploring historic sites in cool weather.

One of the most important events happening in Athens in November, is the annual Classic Athens Marathon race. It takes place on the second Sunday of November, and attracts thousands of observers and athletes from all over the world.

The demonstration usually results in clashes with the police.

Unless you want to participate in the march, avoid the areas close to Panepistimio, Omonia, Evangelismos and Megaro Moussikis metro stations. If you are staying in one of the Athens hotels in these areas or on Syntagma Square, keep your eyes open.

This is one of my favourite activities for a cool November day! The temple of Poseidon is located at Cape Sounion, about 70 kms out of central Athens.

The location is right on the coast, offering fantastic views of the Aegean Sea. If I was God Poseidon, this is where I’d like my temple to be!

You can get to Cape Sounion by public bus, which is quite time-consuming, or rental car. You can also take a transfer and guided tour to the Temple of Poseidon .

This post will reveal the reality of visiting in the cooler months, and I’ll tell you straight away, that it’s a really good time to visit. But we need to get clear about your weather expectations.

When you think of Greece, what comes to mind? Let me guess, blazing hot temperatures, the crystal blue Aegean sea. Does that sound about right?

Sorry to say it, but if you hoping to spend your time on the beach in Greece in November, it is very unlikely it will work out.

That said, you could get lucky with some random, unseasonably warm weather, but you shouldn’t count on it.

Is visiting Athens in November a silly choice? Or is it the European cities ‘ best-kept secret!?

The capital of Greece, Athens, is a much different place in November than in August, and that is a good thing!

You will find the city much less crowded, cheaper, and overall more bearable than in the dead of August.

You can expect several things when you go to Athens in November.

Below are some of the most notable.

Cooler Weather

Athens weather in November is mixed – some days are freezing and wet, while others offer clear, sunny skies above. The average temperature was 59 F (15 C), with maximum temperatures of 64 F (18 C) and low temperatures of 54 F (12 C).

At night, the cold air rolls in, making the jackets chilly. In terms of precipitation, a month averages 7 to 8 days of precipitation .

That may not seem like a lot of rain compared to many places worldwide, but it is Athens’ second biggest month of rain.

Chances are it could rain a little while you are in Athens, but I bet the weather could be worse from where you are traveling.

I would recommend Athens in November over the summer months every time. It is truly too hot to enjoy Athens for more than 2 days when it’s a billion degrees. November is so comfortable with a light coat.

Fewer Tourists

Hell, to the yes, there are fewer tourists in Athens in November! Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather visit cities when they are less crowded .

Sure, you aren’t going to have that Greek summer weather, but if you are coming to explore the culture of the ancient Greeks, you don’t want scorching temperatures.

Take it from someone who lives in Athens , you don’t want to be here in this summer.

It’s Cheaper

From November 1 till March 31, everything in Athens is just cheaper . This includes hotels, museums, and, in some cases, flights.

For example, entrance tickets to all the famous sites are lower by a few euros, depending on the venue.

Those swanky hotels with amazing views may now be within your budget !

Start with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Acropolis! This archaeological wonderland contains many ancient buildings.

The Propylaia

The gateway to the Acropolis, otherwise known as The Propylaia. You will funnel through this gate into the main archaeological sites.

Erechtheion

The Erechtheion or Temple of Athena Polias is most my favorite ancient ruin. It is recognizable for the statues of women holding up sections of the building.

Roman agora.

April 1st till October 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 19:30 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 16:30

The word Agora means “meeting place.” The archeological site of The Roman Agora was the ancient open marketplace where things like meats and vegetables were sold, and things such as wool and grain were traded.

If you are short on time, you could just walk by and get photos from the exterior.

Ancient Agora of Athens

April 1st till October 31st Open Monday 11:00 – 19:30 and Tuesday – Sunday 8:00 – 19:30 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 15:00

The ancient Agora of Athens is an important site in Greek history. This was the gathering place, also referred to as the “assembly place,” where the political business would take place.

This site would also be known to gather and listen to religious philosophers and to watch performers.

Prioritize visiting the Ancient Agora of Athens if you have the time. It is a large site that you can expect to take about 1-2 hours to explore .

Temple of Olympian Zeus

April 1st till October 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 19:00 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 15:30

A temple built to honor the Greek god Zeus was built between the sixth century BC and the second century AD. The temple was once the second-largest temple in Greece.

Destroyed in an invasion, now only 15 columns remain standing of the 104 that were originally built.

Go to all the museums

When the weather conditions look a bit undesirable, you can hit the museums and art galleries.

The best include Radio Atènes , the Museum of Cycladic Art , and the National Museum of Contemporary Art .

It can be hard to predict the November weather when you visit Greece, but if you plan the main attractions wisely, it will work out great!

Stroll all the quaint shops

Who doesn’t love a little shopping? Especially on those chilly days, it is a great way to spend your time in Athens!

November is an excellent month to go shopping in Athens because there are fewer crowds. The main shopping centers at the heart of town are Ermou streets and its labyrinth of side streets. On Ermou Street, you will find all the commercial brands and stores you may have back home.

Kolonaki is the best location for high-end fashion, but there are other cool things to do in Kouchaki and Psiri. The Varvakylos Food Market is ideal for those who want herbs, spices, and traditional Greek food.

Finally, take an excursion to Plaka and Monastiraki to find interesting and unique souvenirs. Monastiraki is also the home to Athens Flea Market!

Eat traditional Greek food

No matter what the weather is like in Greece in November, you can eat incredible food! Athens, Greece, is the melting pot for all the traditional Greek food.

Each region of Greece is known for its specialties when it comes to cuisine. Crete is known for its marathópitta (fennel pie), and Rhodes is known for Melekuni, honey, and seed dessert bar.

In Athens, the famous dish is Moussaka, which can be compared to lasagna. Moussaka is traditionally eggplant or potato-based with some sort of traditional meat. If you don’t eat meat, like me, you can find a vegan version at select restaurants.

Find all the street art

There is no shortage of street art in Athens! Areas with the most street art are Exarchia, Psyrri, Anafiotika, and Gazi. Make it your mission to check out the art in every area.

Go on coastal walks

In November, the average high temperature is 59oF (15oC), with a maximum of 64oF (18oC) in Athens, so it may be too cold to go to the beach. However, fun things to do could include a walk along the stunning coastline.

A good place to start would be the Pireas port. From there, you can walk along the coast, stopping in cafes and restaurants.

Visit A Hamman

Spa day, anyone? When I visited Athens in November, there were a couple of rainy days. On those days, I booked into a Hamman .

It is a bath house for those who don’t know what a Hamman is. Think steam rooms and saunas. Perfect activity in November in Athens!

You could also get a massage and facial , which I also did on my trip at Hotel Grande Bretagne . If you don’t want to do that either, you could also get your nails done.

Walking Tour of Athens

The best way to see the city of Athens is via a walking tour. Have a local travel specialist take you around the city center and educate you on ancient Greece.

One of the best parts about visiting Athens in November is there are fewer tourists! This makes it easier to enjoy the city. You will also notice lower prices when visiting Greece in November.

Perks When Visiting Athens in November

November is a budget month to visit athens.

November is basically the shoulder season, making November a great month to visit Athens for your budget . Flights from many parts of Europe can generally be much cheaper in November than in summer.

Depending on where you are traveling from, plane tickets can still be expensive. Fares from other European cities will likely be much lower.

Athens hotels may be where you find the biggest savings! Staying in a fancy hotel in central Athens in November could be much more affordable than in summer.

Enjoy the Christmas Decorations in November

When you visit Greece in the later part of November, you also have the opportunity to check out the Christmas decorations! Now you might be thinking, really? Christmas Markets in Athens, Greece?

It gets quite festive at the end of November and all of December in Athens ! Lights and decorations will fill Syntagma Square. Find the Christmas Tree Boats (Karavaki) along the ports. These small boats are decorated like a Christmas trees.

Where else can I go?

Want to see more than just Athens? Throughout November, temperatures in Athens may be completely different than in other cities in Greece. Some Greek islands are closed for tourism altogether, while others are open.

If you are itching to leave the Greek capital for a change of scenery, you have options!

Greek Islands to Visit in November

What to expect when visiting Athens in November can also be applied to the Greek islands. Not all islands are open for tourism, but some of the larger ones are.

Crete is a Greek island that is open year-round. The average rainfall in Crete in November weather is around 87mm, with an average wind speed of 9mph. Not the ideal time if you are interested in the pristine beaches in Crete.

However, it would be a great island to visit if you are interested in the stunning monasteries and archaeological sites. I would suggest you fly to Crete from Athens .

As I mentioned, most of the remote islands in Greece are closed in November. However, if you are set on visiting an island in Greece in November, I suggest going to Hydra.

Day trips to Greek Islands

Hydra is only 2 hours via ferry , making it the perfect island to visit for a day trip! Hydra is located in the Saronic Island group in the central Greece region.

Although November may not be the time to visit the beautiful beaches, there is a lot of ancient Greek history to indulge in.

If you are looking for day trips a little closer to Athens, I suggest a day trip to Peloponnese. There are some great organized tours to join if you don’t want to research going on your own.

What to pack for Athens in November?

In November, you can visit Athens and pack clothing in various combinations. On sunny days you can wear jeans and an oversized T-shirt comfortably. Make sure to carry some light clothing and a sweater.

Most Athenians swim on a sunny November day in Athens, even though summer temperatures aren’t quite as high.

Swimming in November in Athens doesn’t sound like a great idea to me, but if you are brave and want to fit in with the Athenians, I say go for it! Bring a bathing suit, just in case! You could also use it if you visit a spa with an indoor pool.

A raincoat and umbrella are also a good idea. You should pack comfortably but don’t need to go crazy with winter gear.

Tip: You must wear a sturdy and safe pair of shoes when you visit ancient monuments. I would advise high heels or difficult-to-walk-in shoes altogether.

Yes! In fact, there is FREE Entry on the first Sunday of every month, starting November 1st until March 31st. The opening times are limited from November 1st till March 31st. Doors open at 8 am, and the last entry is at 16:30, closing at 17:00. Arrive at least 1 hour before closing so that you aren’t rushed.

It is absolutely worth visiting Athens in November. It will be a completely different experience than visiting in the summer months. Athens is a big city full of culture and ancient history! Don’t let the winter season stop you from visiting this amazing city.

When visiting Athens in November, you can expect cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and discount prices on museums and hotels. In many ways, November is a much better time to visit Athens than the summer.

Athens is also the capital city of Greece and the most important economic center of the country. Athenians are more or less dressed in a casual or a casual-chic style unless they have a business to attend to, in which case they are dressed in office attire .

As for pants, if you are not 100% sure that the meeting is super casual, then I would avoid wearing jeans. I would prefer some neutral-looking business pants that make you feel comfortable and warm enough in chilled weather.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pack your favorite pair of jeans. Jeans in Greece are great most of the time especially if you are going out in the evening to a bar or a casual restaurant.

As for shoes in Athens, Clarks loafers and classic cut neutral boots are great for any work meeting. The secret for me when it comes to long meetings is comfort, class, and neutral attire.

Shopping in Athens

Do you need clothes for a special occasion, no matter what it is? You can purchase whatever you want in Athens or any other big city in Greece. Here are some of the best shopping destinations in Athens:

• Ermou Street : Ermou Street, a pedestrian shopping haven, is one of Athens’ main shopping thoroughfares. Lined with a mix of high-end boutiques, international chains, and local brands, it’s the perfect place for fashion enthusiasts.
• Kolonaki : The affluent district of Kolonaki boasts upscale and posh boutiques and designer stores. It’s where you’ll find luxury brands and high-end fashion. It is in central Athens
• Attika City Center : Located in the heart of Athens (Panepistimiou St, 3 minutes from Syntagma Sq, you get to a modern shopping center featuring a wide range of stores.

4. Golden Hall and the Mall of Athens: They are both located in the affluent suburb of Maroussi, in the north of Athens. There are massive shopping complexes offering a plethora of shops, restaurants, a cinema, and even an indoor ice-skating rink.

5. Glyfada : This Athens Riviera suburb is a shopping destination known for its high-quality clothing and accessories boutiques. Glyfada also offers a beautiful sea view, making it a delightful place to shop and relax. The best cafe by the sea in Glyfada is Caretta Athens .

What to Wear if You are Travelling the Greek Islands or Mainland

If you are a nature lover, a hiker, or you just love exploring nature and especially the steep mountains then Greece in November will be one of your favorite months.

I will never forget my first visit in late November to Parnassos Mt. near the Delphi archaeological site. It was all nice and sunny, but climbing towards the peak the weather changed all of a sudden to rain and cold and I was freezing. I did have a pair of gloves and a warm hat but I still remember the cold!

So, it is always best to be well-prepared for the unstable weather in the Greek mountains with a warm jacket.

The islands can be warmer in general but can be hit hard by winds so go well-prepared with wind and a rain-proof jacket like the Marmot one.

The secret to getting dressed in colder weather is to have layers of clothes that you can easily add or remove depending on how warm or cold you feel.

If you are thinking of visiting a ski resort in Greece , November may not be a good month as there will be no snow around to ski. However, hiking or just driving through the mountainous villages of Zagorochoria or Pelion will be a rewarding experience.

But you will need appropriate hiking boots to avoid unwanted slips or even injuries in areas where there are many leaves on slippery ground.

Do I Need Swimwear in Greece in November?

If you are already a winter swimmer, sure, bring it along. If you are expecting warm waters like it is during summer, then you will be greatly disappointed. The water is going to be cold. However, if you book a hotel with a swimming pool, it might be handy to pack one pair.

What Not to Wear

• Heavy Winter Gear: Avoid packing heavy winter coats and bulky sweaters. November in Greece isn’t that cold, so you won’t need these items. Focus on lighter layers that you can easily add or remove.
• Summer Clothing: While you might encounter some mild, sunny days, it’s not the time for shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops. Save these for your summer beach vacation.
• Overly Formal Attire: Greece is generally a relaxed and casual destination. Unless you have specific formal events or plans, leave your formal wear at home. Stick to smart-casual clothing that’s comfortable for sightseeing.

Why to Visit Greece in November?

A lot of people are visiting Greece in November because they have business meetings to attend, mostly in Athens, Thessaloniki , or other major cities.

Greece in November is also great for couples , as they can get moments of privacy and solitude in destinations that are often heavily overcrowded. Other visitors have free time and prefer to explore Greece in the quietness of the sites and with the best shoulder season prices.

Between November and March, all the archaeological sites in Greece are half-price plus every first Sunday of each month, the entrance to the sites is completely free for everyone.

This is the time when the farmers collect their apples, chestnuts, quinces, and lotuses so, in very fertile areas like Pelion, the fruit is everywhere to smell and try the local varieties. I just love November in Greece and that it is finally so much cooler than the scorching summer heat.

Where to Stay in Nafplion Peloponnese

Nafplion in the Peloponnese is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece close to magnificent sites such as the Sanctuary of Epidaurus , Mycenae , Porto Heli , and islands like Poros and Spetses .

Why should you consider a holiday in Santorini in November? Perhaps you are tempted to visit Santorini Greece, but the crowds are off-putting. Well, November is the perfect month to visit this unique island if you are not into beach holidays and swimming. In this complete guide to visiting Santorini in November, you’ll find out the 14 best things to do, what you need to know before you visit, and why the island is so much better once the crowds are gone.

Things to know before traveling to Santorini in November

Santorini and its unrivaled beauties are the reason many travelers visit Greece in the first place. For many, it will be the only thing besides Athens they will ever see of Greece.

This fact makes Santorini one of the most crowded Greek destinations ever and oftentimes an impediment to enjoying the sights you covered thousands of miles for.

As Greece’s most popular island, Santorini has one of the longest tourist seasons of all the Greek islands, stretching from early March until late October.

However, the low season on this island does not mean whole villages and most restaurants, cafes, and museums are shut for the winter.

November is the entry month to the winter season and a period when the whole vibe is much more relaxed and you will have all the landmarks to yourself.

The best thing of all – Santorini’s sometimes notoriously high prices drop significantly during the off-season, offering much better value for money.

Accommodation is a lot cheaper, so it gives you more pocket money to spend on Santorini activities or if you are like me, to open up a whole new world of private pool/hot tub cliff-house luxury hotels that are otherwise out of reach during the high season.

Weather in Santorini in November

November is the first month of the Greek Cycladic island’s mild winter. The famous island rains are still far away, the sunshine is abundant, but the heat is gone. But, what does it mean actually?

The daytime average temperature is 15-20˚C, with a monthly average close to 17˚C. The average sea temperature is around 19˚C, which for many swimmers tends to be too cold to enjoy the sea.

Since I spend a lot of time in Greece during the year, I stop swimming in mid-October and consider a visit to Santorini in November a kind of city break or a sightseeing trip, not a beach holiday.    

This might still be warm compared to many places in Europe (especially Northern Europe and North America ), so as long as the days are sunny, you will enjoy the weather.

Days are spent in jeans and a shirt, while the evenings will require a sweater and/or a jacket. 

Does visiting Santorini in November make sense?

This is the main question – well, it depends on what you expect from your visit.

🏖️ If beach holiday, swimming and sea sports are your main focus, better avoid November, as the weather is too cold for that. (You might consider Cyprus instead).

🏝️ If, however, you intend to roam around one of the most spectacular Mediterranean islands out there, soaking up its culture, black-soil volcanoes, traditional architecture, views, sunsets, and local people relaxing from the busy season, then November is the very best month to do that.

☀️ The Santorini weather is mild and perfect for many activities that would be just too much hard work under the scorching months of July and August.

🚶🏿‍♀️ This includes the amazing Fira-Oia walk and the general feeling is that November gives you more possibilities for discovering the island’s charms.

Getting to Santorini in November

✈️ Getting to Santorini in November is as easy during the winter as it is in the summer, although some international charter flights will cease to operate past mid-October.

⛴️ Direct domestic flights connecting Athens , Thessaloniki, and other Greek destinations with the island are regular and plenty, plus ferries from/to Athens and other Greek islands never stop sailing.

TIP: Sometimes it is cheaper to fly than to get a ferry service to Santorini.

What is closed in Santorini in November?

⏳ The time when the island’s tourist infrastructure really shuts for the season is the very end of November.

🛳️ That’s when the last cruise ships make their ultimate visits to the island for the year, as well as the time big resorts and luxurious hotels close for the winter.

🛎️ Other than that, November is business as usual for most of the island, although you will start noticing small towns and villages wrapping up their businesses during the last week of November.

🛍️ Fira and Oia is where all the activity remains.

🚌 November is the time public buses cancel some of the routes or make less frequent departures. This should not bother you as Santorini is really an island where you should rent a car.

TIP: All the important things including hotels, restaurants, bars & cafes, museums and excursions/activities are open. 

Can you still swim in Santorini in November?

Santorini has some picturesque and unique beaches, including the famous Perivolos or Perissa, White Beach, Red Beach, Ammoudi Bay ( Amoudi Bay ).

They are more interesting as geological things of beauty and unique settings than they are swimming and beach marvels.

There are much nicer beaches on other Greek islands or the mainland (especially Halkidiki or Peloponnese regions), so I am not a great fan of Santorini beaches and swimming.

The average sea temperature is still lukewarm (19˚C/ 66.2˚F) and many people swim at least during the first two weeks of November. You won’t see locals doing this!

It is possible to swim in the warm springs around the volcano on boat tours at any time of year. In any case, bring along a swimsuit and try, you never know, you might be pleasantly surprised!

Best 14 things to do in Santorini in November

If you want to explore Santorini’s other attractions – archaeological sites, wine tastings, hiking, sailing, exploring quiet villages, soaking up caldera views – November is the best month to come.

These are my favorite things to do in Santorini in November.

1. Sailing around the island – many boat tours options

If you are like me, you will love exploring Greek islands on a sailing boat and Santorini is perhaps the most interesting when approached by the sea.

Built high on its cliffs, Santorini’s history has always been one with its shores, harbors, and surrounding islets.

A sailing trip not only opens up these perspectives, it also gives you perfect opportunities to take unique photographs and truly admire the geography of the island and the caldera.

TIP: Although more than 200 boat tours are available during the summer, this number in November drops significantly. Nevertheless, sailing around Santorini, especially on a sunset tour, is a perfect opportunity to embrace its azure Aegean Sea!

2. Volcano visit

The greatest boat tour you can do around Santorini – a visit to its volcanic core – is best done in November.

The volcanic heart of Santorini is located on an islet called Nea Kameni, just off Fira.

On the way there you literary sail around its flooded caldera as you approach the epicenter of the eruption that shaped the Greek islands some 3500 years ago.

The visit includes a bit of hiking once you arrive there. This is almost impossible during the summer, as the heat is just dazzling, but in November, the weather is mild and the hike is pleasant.

Best of all, the volcano tour will then take you on the small islet of Palaia Kameni, including a visit to the hot springs and mud baths that are a living example of what means to live on volcanic soil.

The waters in Agios Nikolaos Bay are warm – around 30˚C – so a quick swim (despite the harsh volcanic smell) is a must!

TIP: Daytrip cruises from Santorini depart from the picturesque Old Port of Fira (aka Skala or Gialos), so make sure to walk the winding steps down to it and take a cable car up, which is an attraction in its own right!

3. Visit Ancient Akrotiri

Santorini boasts a lot of archaeological sites and museums, bearing witness to its significance since ancient times.

The most well-known is the settlement of Ancient Akrotiri, which was probably a Bronze Age Minoan colony.

Ancient Akrotiri, like its Italian counterpart Pompeii , was devastated by a volcanic eruption sometime around the 17th century BC.

The settlement was completely covered by volcanic ashes and debris when it was discovered in the 1860s. The ash protected the site for many centuries.

The site is huge, and although an open-air location, the main excavated area has been covered to protect the ruins from the elements.

It is one of my favorite ancient sites of Greece as you actually walk around a settlement and its squares and streets that just stopped existing in a single day.

4. Go to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera

Ancient Acrotiri doesn’t have a museum, so the next logical stop after it is the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira town.

That’s where the whole ancient site comes to life and a place to admire the elaborate culture and art of the prehistoric times of the island.

The archaeological museum houses some magnificent 4000-year-old Santorini Cycladic figurines. The archaeological site’s wall frescoes, vessels, ceramics, and other items can be seen here too.

TIP: The museum is built on the site of the old Ypapanti Church, which was destroyed in a catastrophic 1956 Santorini earthquake.

5. Discover Santorini wineries

Some of Europe’s oldest wineries are in Santorini! So, brand everyone’s favorite activity of wine tasting into a tour of Europe’s cultural heritage and knock yourself out.

Santorini and its volcanic soil produced an amazing variety of wines, with the most famous grapes locally grown surely being the Assyrtiko (white) and Mavrotragano (red).

Besides other varieties produced on the island, like Athiri, and Mandilaria, Santorini is known for its sun-dried variety of Vinsanto, bound to satisfy any sweet wine palate.

There are almost 15 wineries in Santorini that you can visit on your own or as a part of a tour that groups at least 3-4 places, so it becomes a half-day activity.

Industrious locals tend to bring together the 3 things Santorini is famous worldwide for – sunset, volcano, and wine into a sunset wine-tasting cruise!

So, if you are not into anything winery-related and just want to sample these wonderful wines, this might the the thing for you.

Hike Santorini

It is common knowledge that Santorini is a unique natural setting with cliffside villages and stunning vistas towards the flooded caldera, other islands, and the horizon.

One of the best ways to discover it is to hike the trails of Santorini, something not easily done under the summer heat, but a pure bliss in November. These are my two favorite hikes.

6. Fira to Oia hike  

The queen of hiking routes, this relatively easy 10km path, unpacks the whole of Santorini’s nature and views for you.

It is not just the most picturesque hiking trail in Europe (no false modesty here!) but an activity that will really give you the island on your palm and make you remember it forever.

Start from Fira to get more downhill sections (and the least number of inclines), and walk past the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli before reaching the magical Oia.

What to expect? Wildflowers cascading down the cliff, white sugar cube architecture, blue domes of Santorini on the horizon, and all that glorious Aegean Sea.

November is the perfect month to do this hike as you can plan ahead and end up in Oia for the sunset, something that would be impossible to do under the summer sun.

Taking a bus back to Fira is a hassle-free experience.

I was comfortable in November in a t-shirt, shorts, and hiking shoes because of the sunny day, but I took a light jacket that I needed after the sunset. Fira-Oia is among the easy hikes around the Cyclades.

7. Kamari to Ancient Thera to Perissa hike

This is another hike that is much more pleasant in November when the weather is milder as you are walking up from the black volcanic sands of seaside Kamari to the archaeological site of Ancient Thera via a cobblestoned path meandering along big rocky boulders.

All of it is one huge furnace during the summer, but a very nice walk in November.

After visiting the Church and Spring of Zoodochos Pigi and some time roaming around the ruins of Ancient Thera, continue for another 40-50 minutes of downhill hike to another black-sand resort of Perissa.

TIP: Check the bus schedules for coming back from Perissa, you might need to switch in Fira.  

November might be a good time to learn diving and Santorini is a proper place to do it. There are a couple of diving and snorkeling tour shops in Amoudi Bay.

Protected from the strong northern Meltemi winds, the south coast of Santorini is a friendly, non-demanding environment, perfect for the first underwater steps.

The lower water temperature means you should simply put on a thicker wet suit and you are good to go!

Visit the historic villages of Santorini

Santorini is so much more than its caldera villages perched on the inner-ring cliff of the island.

Although settlements between Fira and Oia attract the majority of tourists, the real charm lies elsewhere, in places that still retain the real-life rhythm of insular life.

And they don’t lack in historic landmarks either!

In November they might be ready to enter sweet winter hibernation, but even then, they are wonderful places to discover.

Take a car or Quad bike around the island, as the roads will be free from the usual tourist traffic of innumerable, coaches, minibuses, and scooters.

You can start with the one closest to Fira – Mesaria village.

The last of the caldera villages before you turn to the inner sections of the island, Mesaria has wonderful architecture and nice cafes and restaurants.

Do not miss a visit to the house museum, Argyros Mansion , a rare example of a high-bourgeois island house.

After that, head straight to Canava Santorini distillery, where the owners have produced fine spirits for decades, including ouzo.

Even if you are not a fan, you will love the setting and their newly established museum of everyday life called “Santorini the days gone by”.

The next village to be on your exploration list should definitely be the medieval hillside village of Pyrgos , sitting below the highest point of Santorini, the Profitis Ilias peak.

Besides the remains of the Venetian castle, historical monuments testifying to the island’s role in WW2, and beautifully restored houses, Pyrgos is home to one of the famous blue-domed churches of Santorini – Aghios Nikolaos.

Before moving on, stop for a wine in the local Hatzidakis or Santo Winery.

11. Emporio

Emporio is the real Santorini nowadays, a place where the majority of locals live and go about their daily lives.

It is also a place rich in history, with windmills, traditional architecture designed to keep the pirates away, another Venetian castle (one of the island’s five and my favorite), narrow alleyways, towers, and nearby black sand beaches.

And it’s only 12km away from Fira town.

12. Megalochori

Megalochori is a place with rich and interesting history and my favorite part has to do with the villagers not running away from the piracy of the Aegean Sea, but embracing it – there were many pirate hideouts in the area.

After the heyday of the maritime outlaws was gone, Megalochori established itself as the exporting hub for Santorini wines until the village was severely hit by the devastating 1956 earthquake.

Santorini has many more villages, including Karterados, Mesa Gonia, Ekso Gonia, Finikia, Vourvoulo, and Vothonas. Visit them at your own pace; now that the roads are not busy, the island is easily traversed.

TIP: One of my favorite Santorini restaurants is Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia.

13. Stroll Fira and Oia without the crowds

November is a perfect month to visit the jewel villages of Santorini – Fira and Oia.

These places get the majority of tourists and during the summer it’s almost impossible to enjoy the narrow winding streets dug out in the cliff.

During the low season months, you won’t have the glorious warm weather of the Cyclades over summer, but the island gets a bit of its authenticity back and you might just find a local or two sitting together and chatting over a coffee cup.

TIP: Strangely, Oia offers much fewer choices in November than Fira. I recommend Oia only for day drips and hike destinations.

14. Explore traditional Santorini food

And for the end of this Santorini compendium, my favorite thing – Greek food . Nowadays, you can find any cuisine in Santorini, from sushi to McDonalds.

But in the winter months, the real local food comes to life.

Santorini is big on tomatoes, fava, and wine. So, go for fried tomato balls and sun-dried tomatoes, PDO Santorini fava dip from locally grown yellow split peas, all washed down with any local house wine; it’s bound to be good.

Santorini guarantees great food year-round.

Santorini in November: Here’s What It’s Actually Like

If you’re heading to Santorini in the month of November, the first week is the best time to still have a choice of shops, restaurants and attractions to enjoy. It really can be a good time to go if you’re interested in doing more than just lounging around beside the Aegean Sea.

Later in the month, the island’s fully into “winter season” in terms of activities and attractions. By then, the weather’s usually more mixed with a higher chance of clouds, rain and storms, too.

Having said that, there are some restaurants and shops open all year round, and the weather can be perfect for hiking. Here’s what to expect on Santorini island in November.

As with October, the weather in November can be changeable. So when visiting Santorini, you should expect mixed weather. But still anticipate enjoying some sunny days. I’ve certainly managed to get some interesting tan lines walking about early in the month!

At this time of year, there are about 10.5 hours of sunshine. The average daytime high is 18°C/64.4°F, and at night it’s 14°C/57.2°F. But as they’re averages, it’s usually a bit higher towards the front end of the month and then lower as it heads towards December.

The average sea temperature is still higher than in the spring, so swimming and boat trips are still an option.

Adverse Weather Affecting Travel in November

The weather can affect your travel plans at this time of year, so be aware of that.

When I returned from Santorini in November, there was a shipping ban around the Cyclades because of the high wind gusts.

Even if it’s not the most pleasant experience for passengers, ships generally run if they can dock safely. If they can’t, that’s when they’re cancelled.

Leave enough time if you’re travelling back to Athens to catch a flight home or be prepared to take an alternative route. Be aware that flights will fill up fast if the ships are cancelled.

🏨 Here are some hotels close to Athens Airport if you need them.

Flights generally aren’t cancelled for high winds, but you might experience some mild to moderate turbulence on take-off and landing. Your flight time can be affected, too.

We had some tailwind on the flight down from Athens to Thira Airport in November and got there in 24 minutes flat. Going back, flying into the wind, the same journey took 46 minutes.

If you fly when it’s windy, watch your stuff when you get off. People were losing sunglasses, hats and jackets as they came down the steps from the plane to the tarmac. There’s a pile of stuff at the perimeter fence now, I think!

Are Places Still Open In Santorini in November?

November on other Greek islands would be classed as one of the winter months (tourist season-wise). But in Santorini, it’s the tail end of the high season. So, it is one of the best places to go if you’re considering the islands .

Some hotels, restaurants and clubs do close at the end of September. And a significant amount close by mid-late October. But there are still enough things running in early November to make it a worthwhile time to visit .

Accommodation

The majority of Santorini hotels are closed in November, particularly along the Oia caldera. If you’re looking for something opulent, your biggest choice will be amongst the luxury villas.

If you go that route, check they’re set up to deal with cool weather days. You want to confirm that the house has a hot water heater (not just solar) so that you can still have a hot shower when it’s cloudy.

Ask about heating, too. Probably, they’ll all have AC, in which case they have a heating option too. But try and look at reviews from the same time of year and see if that was enough. Towards the end of the month, a stone building might be quite cool to sit in, in the evening.

You will find a few villas in Oia, as well as more in other spots like Fira and Pyrgos.

Pyrgos is a nice location to base yourself in for discovering the island in the off-season.

If you want a hotel in Santorini rather than a villa, there are a few luxury hotels open.

Olvos Luxury Suites has some beautiful suites along the Oia caldera that are available in November. Rocabella Hotel and Spa at Imerovigli is open all year, and several posh suites are still running in Imerovigli, too.

There are other budget options around the island. Search in booking.com and use the filters to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Restaurants and Bars

Again, the majority of restaurants and bars with a caldera view are closed by November. But you will find some that are open. You might not experience the finest cuisine that Santorini has to offer. But you can still get a decent meal with a great view.

Fira restaurants still open in the first week of November 2023 include:

• Kaliya Reimagined – caldera view
• Classico – caldera view
• Triana Tavern
• Pelican Kipos
• Nikolas Tavern
• MALT restaurant

Plus, there are others along the caldera and several on the main square.

and a few others along the caldera and cafes on the square by the bus and taxi ranks.

Note that most of these places will close by mid-November.

In Pyrgos , I noticed Johnny’s and Brusco (very good) were open as I drove past.

In Akrotiri , near Red Beach, Peirasmos was open, and The Dolphins Taverna is open all year.

There are other restaurants around the island that stay open in November, too.

The beach clubs usually wind down in October, so what you’re left with in November are nice, natural beaches. Most still have shops or facilities open nearby, though, so you can stock up on food and drink on those great weather days.

And, of course, you can easily access Perissa and Perivolos Beach as well as Kamari. (And Monolithos if you’re staying by the airport.)

I didn’t visit Kamari Beach in November, but I flew over it, taking off from the airport when I left. From the air, I noticed about three sections still had sunbeds and loungers set up. So you can try there if you want a serviced beach experience.

Red Beach in November

The boat running between the Red Beach, White Beach and Meso Pigadia Beach has stopped for the season for sure.

But the public buses still run to Akrotiri, so you can walk along to the Red Beach viewpoint. It’s nice to enjoy the stunning red sand and cliffs without the umbrellas and loungers at the end of the beach.

There are still enough shops open at the beginning of the month to feel like you’ve had a perfectly good shopping experience. After the first week of November, the vast majority will have closed down.

While most shops close in the winter, some boutiques and shops in both Oia and Fira stay open all year round. Cruise ships visit through the low season, and people still come to walk the caldera and see the sunset. Plus, locals need clothes too!

You’ll spot the open shops easily as you wander around because the others are shuttered closed.

Attractions and Things to Do

Again, while some things have ended their season, there are enough attractions still running at the beginning of November for you to fill your time well.

Museums and Sites

Ancient Thera and the archaeological site of Akrotiri are open throughout the year. Government-run historical sites like these have summer hours from April to October and winter hours from November until March.

However, they are still plenty long enough for you to enjoy, and if you time it right, you might even get free entry. The first weekend of every month, government-run museums in Greece are free to enter.

In November, Akrotiri Excavation Site and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira are open every day except Tuesdays from 08:30 – 15:30. Ancient Thera is open the same hours every day except for Wednesdays.

Individual entrance tickets are at a reduced price in the winter. All three of these sites have free entrance on the first Sunday in November , so it’s the ideal time to save some money.

The Lost Atlantis Experience is open for the first few days of November and then closed for the rest of the season.

The Tomato Industrial Museum at Vlychada advertises as being open from April until October. But in 2023, they had tickets available until the end of the second week in November.

It’s quite a fun, interactive museum and Vlychada Beach next door is an interesting one to visit.

Wine Tasting

You don’t have to miss out on Santorini’s lovely white wines when you visit in autumn. You can join small group wine-tasting tours as well as arrange your own private one.

Usually, you visit three wineries, so obviously, you’ll be taken to places that are open in November.

If you don’t want to join a group, the following wineries are still open in November:

Estate Arygros at Episkopi Gonias near Kamari and the Airport offers its 90-minute tasting and local bites until the second week of November. Their 45-minute welcome tasting is available all month (closed on Sundays).

Domaine Sigalas near Oia is open the first week of November for tastings only (restaurant is closed)

Venetsanos Winery is on the caldera at Megalochori, right above Athinios Port. In November, they offer two wine tastings . One has four wines, and the other has six. Both come served with local delicacies.

Cooking Class

If you want to learn to cook local recipes while on the island in November, you still can. To Spitiko Mas has cooking lessons through the autumn/fall.

As I said in my post about April in Santorini , the sunset is as beautiful in winter as it is in summer. It might be different than the quintessential sunset pics you’ve seen of Oia in the summer months.

But the days when the weather conditions are mixed can be the best way to see the stunning colours of the sunset. November’s a great time of year to enjoy the sunset with somewhat fewer tourists crowing up Oia’s narrow streets.

Here are the best spots to watch the sunset in Fira town. You don’t need an organised sunset tour to enjoy the view.

Boat Trips, Hiking and Other Outdoor Activities

As I’ve mentioned, Santorini weather can be changeable in November, and there will usually be some windy or rainy days. But the cooler weather lends itself to hiking (one of the best things to do, in my opinion) and other outdoor activities.

Volcano Boat Trips

Boat trips to the volcano and the hot springs run at the beginning of the month. As the good weather becomes less reliable, they begin to taper off. By late November/the last week of the month, I don’t think you’ll find anything still running.

You can also still do boat rental without a license and make your own trip along the coast.

Kayak tours still run right through into December. Obviously, this and the boat trips are weather permitting. If there’s a strong wind or other bad weather forecast, then be prepared for the activity to be cancelled.

Bike tours run throughout the month and caldera hiking tours from Fira to Oia run on selected dates in November.

As well as the famous caldera walk there are some other really pleasant walking paths on Santorini. November can be a great time of year to discover them. I’ve written about the hikes here if you’d like to do a few while you’re there.

It’s also worth thinking about doing a half-day trip to Thirassia island to hike. The boats from Ammoudi Bay run all year because there are permanent residents.

But watch if the weather’s on the windy side. The boats don’t dock if the water’s too choppy, so make sure you can get back.

Getting Around The Island

Public buses in the shoulder season.

If you’re only staying a few days, your accommodation is central and just want to visit the tourist hotspots, then the public buses are probably absolutely fine.

You check the public bus timetables on the K.T.E.L website. They only display the current schedules, though, and they do change over the year.

Organised Tours

I’d also recommend looking at group or private tours to take you around the various attractions. That’s a really simple way of enjoying what you’re there to see without worrying about logistics.

Private and group tours are winding down in November, but you’ll still find some options for part of the month. If you go on Get Your Guide, you can see what’s available during your travel dates.

Taxis and Shuttles

Taxis are always available, and your hotel might provide a guest shuttle bus that you can book to get around.

However, if you’re staying a bit longer, are choosing out-of-the-way accommodation or want to take advantage of the cooler weather to go hiking, then maybe renting a car would be the best option.

It depends on what you want to do. Plenty of hikes are accessible from bus routes, so just think through your itinerary and about where you’re staying.

As with other services, a lot of the car rental companies just run until October. But some you can book with in November are:

Avance a national Greek company that’s open all year. I’ve used them lots of times on various islands, so you’ll be able to rent from them in November.

Kronos is based at the port, and I’ve rented from them before, too. They also drop off/collect from Santorini Airport if you’re flying in or out.

What to Wear Visiting Santorini in November

When you visit Santorini in November, I recommend almost the same clothes as in summer. Although it’s the off-season, it can still be pleasant weather, as I’ve said.

Plus, while it’s nowhere near as hot as the peak summer months, it can get humid on the islands. And that can make you feel much warmer.

In addition to what I recommend wearing here for a comfortable trip , make sure you also have a light jacket and/or long-sleeved top for cool evenings and boat trips.

From mid-November on, jeans or long trousers are probably a good idea for cool weather.

Personally I’d buy a good guide book and plan around what you would like to see and do, then come back and ask specific questions. We can’t really plan your visit for you with such little information, hence zero responses.

My experience (which may not be representative, or shared) over very many winter months in northern Greece is that it isn't necessarily the case that the further south you go, the better the weather will be. Greece is a country of mountains and islands, so there are microclimates everywhere. Very, very often I would watch a national weather forecast that was telling me it was stormy and wet in the Aegean, where I was sitting under clear blue skies with the sun on my neck in the Ionian, Epirus or Macedonia. I don't want to give you a false impression or false hope though; your best bet for weather (if weather is a very high priority) would probably be Crete, but the point is, there are absolutely no guarantees.

If you're aiming for Meteora , I'm sure you would get an awful lot out of two weeks on the mainland. Meteora isn't too far from the Zagori region, with idyllic mountain villages in absolutely stunning countryside. Ioannina is on the doorstep too as mentioned above, and a gorgeous place it is as well. Both places are renowned for their food and their hospitality, ditto the town of Metsovo, approximately half way between Meteora and Ioannina.

Heading north and towards Thessaloniki, there are some gorgeous towns and small cities that would certainly keep you going for a day or two at a time. Kastoria for example, and Naousa (not to be confused with its namesake village on the island of Paros ); there are so many more.

Choosing the best places to visit in Greece is an almost impossible task. Home to hundreds of islands, buzzing metropolitan cities steeped in history and culture, and a coastline that spans almost 16,000km, the country truly has something for everyone.

If you’re looking for one of the best European city breaks, you could start with Athens, the birthplace of Western civilization. Nowadays it’s a city of contrasts where you’ll find archaeological sites nestled next to lively coffee shops, market stalls and cocktail bars. Or you could head to the best Greek islands, all possessing their own unique charm, cuisine, and exquisite scenery. Then there’s everything in-between: the mountainous landscapes, towering cliffs, and endless beaches that you’ll find across the country.

As someone who's traveled around Greece for the last decade, with a short stint of living in it, I like to think I have my finger on the pulse of the best places to visit. But just to be sure, I've also enlisted the help of my Greek friends and family members to cover a mixture of destinations - from some of the best islands in Europe, to accessible areas of the mainland. Whether you’re looking for sun, sea, sand, culture, or a buzzing culinary experience, as one of the best places to visit in Europe, Greece can satiate all these desires.

No trip to Greece would be complete without a trip to its capital, Athens. A sprawling, modern metropolis overlooked by the Acropolis, a citadel that's sat on top of a rocky outcrop since 5th century BC. Even if you're not interested in history, it's hard not to marvel at the ancient Greek monumental complex, which can be seen from virtually every corner of the city. In the summer months, you can also attend concerts, opera and theatre performances at Odeon Herodes Atticus, the ancient theatre perched on the Acropolis. It's a true bucket list experience. Once you've scaled the heights of the Acropolis, head down to check out the museum which details the history of the site and the city as a whole. 

Next, head down to the heart of Athens, starting with Monisteraki and its buzzing street stalls and tavernas. If you're after street food, head to Kosta's Souvlaki where you can grab a pitta filled with pork, beef or chicken with onion, tomato and Kostas 'secret' tomato sauce. If you want to sit down with the locals for a meal (or just impress your friends with your insider knowledge), head to Avli, a rustic taverna that you can access via an unmarked door at Agiou Dimitriou 12. Once you find the door - which admittedly can be hard - you'll find a lively yard packed with small tables, delicious meals, jugs of local wine and live music. 

For fine dining, head to Hytra, a Michelin star restaurant in Koukaki - a creative neighborhood, located in the shadow of the Acropolis. Enjoy the 11-course tasting menu which takes reimagines traditional Greek recipes, re-creating them with freshly sourced raw materials. If the food wasn't enough to convince you, the panoramic view of the Acropolis will be. Head there at sunset for some truly breathtaking views. 

Then there are the bars and coffee shops, of which Athens has many. Go to Minu in Psyrri, a minimalistic haven where you can buy mood-boosting plants and handcrafted homeware, or simply sip your coffee and take in the urban oasis. Stay in Psyrri which is packed with cocktail bars (we recommend Juan Rodriguez but you have plenty to choose from).  

Top tip: Download 'Beat' - Greece's answer to Uber. Most of the city's yellow taxis operate with the app but prices are far lower (and language barriers kept to a minimum).

Eschew some of the more popular islands and head to Milos for a truly romantic holiday. Accessible via a short flight from Athens or a ferry ride from the popular islands of Santorini, Paros or and Mykonos, this unique island is worth adding to any travel-hopping itinerary. 

The volcanic island in the Aegean sea has been growing in popularity over recent years but it still remains unblemished by swelling tourism. Brimming with beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters, it offers everything you’d expect from a Greek Island. But the truly unique thing about Milos is its spell-binding lunar landscapes. Its chalk-white cliffs overlooking the azure-blue ocean feel (quite literally) other-worldly. Sarakiniko Beach boasts white rock formations which have smoothed and shaped over time, giving you the sensation you’re walking on the moon. For a truly unique experience, head to the beach before 8am and immerse yourself in the vast, chalky landscape. Drink in the view of the white-bone moonscapes, then jump into the azure sea below. The beach doesn’t offer much natural shade so if you want to avoid the hottest time of the day, plan to go to the beach for the sunset. We recommend traveling in May or early June. August is hot - and windy, which makes swimming difficult. 

There is no public transport operating to the beach, so think about renting a car, scooter, or ATV. The beach is around 10 minutes from Adamas and Plaka so taxis are also reasonable.

Top tip: There are no restaurants or bars at Sarakiniko beach, so come ready with water and food. It’s not far from nearby towns but you will have to hop in the car to get there. Be braced: there are also no public toilets. 

3. Zakynthos

Zakynthos island is known for its wild nightlife, but don't be deterred by its party reputation, as the island offers so much more. Its airport is small but extremely well-served, meaning you can often take advantage of holiday deals on offer. 

Once again, renting a car is advisable to really scale the island and experience its breathtaking views in their full glory. But if you can't, consider staying in Zante Town - the island's capital, where the central bus station is located. Full of picturesque Venetian-style houses and buildings, the town is the cultural hub of the island. But to really immerse yourself in the island culture, head to Vasilikos, the village and community which is located around 15 kilometers south of the town. This part of the island is decidedly sleepy, making it one of the best European vacations for families but solo travelers or couples would enjoy it just as much. While away the day on Gerakas Beach, a long, golden beach on the southern tip of the peninsula, home to the famous Loggerhead Turtles who nest in protected areas of the beaches. Banana beach, the biggest beach on the island is also located nearby. A long, wide beach with sparkling and shallow waters, you can also take part in an array of watersports here. 

If you have a car, take a 15-minute ride to Porto Mela, a taverna perched on Dafni beach that serves up all the favorites plus a selection of fresh seafood. If you're feeling adventurous, try rabbit in red sauce (kouneli stifado) - one of the island's signature dishes. Like most Greek cuisine, it's delicious, messy, and entirely unpretentious. Most restaurants will have different stifado options with other meats on offer too. Wash it down with a carafe of local wine - the island is home to many large vineyards and it's common for families to produce their own.

Top tip: While the south is rich with nature, beaches, and cuisine, don't leave Zante before visiting the north end of the island where the famous Navagia beach is located. Otherwise known as shipwreck beach, the remains of the MV Panagiotis ship have been planted on the white sand since the ship sunk in 1982. It's accessible only by boat, but avoid booking a boat to specifically go there - instead find an itinerary that includes Navagia beach as part of an island tour. In most cases, you'll pay the same price but see multiple destinations. 

4. Kalamata

You might know the name thanks to Kalamata's famous olives, but the capital of Messinia offers plenty more than just that. A pit stop for some of the best cruises and served by many major airlines, Kalamata is a seriously underrated holiday destination. Located 2.5 hours away from the capital, it's a popular hotspot for Athenians and other Greek tourists but it's still completely unspoiled by the swarms of international tourists. Make no mistake though - this is a city built for tourism, with luxury resorts, fine cuisine, and endless beaches. By summer, the beachfront is the place to be, lined with restaurants and beach bars that stay open until the early hours. In winter, the picturesque old town livens up. You can visit the castle or the archaeological museum but the best thing to do in Kalamata is just to do nothing at all and spend days wandering between beach bars, tavernas and dipping in the crystal blue water. There are endless sandy and pebbled beaches along the coastline which progressively get quieter and quieter as you edge away from the main marina.

You're spoilt for choices when it comes to cuisine, but pay a visit to the taverna of Kosta Vassiliadis (Stou Kosta). Regularly featured in top restaurant guides, everything is local and everything is fresh - from the meat, to fish to the verdant salads. The taverna is relatively hard to find unless you have a GPS but that doesn't deter the crowds: it's always packed - and for a reason. Expect to see Kostas floating from table to table chatting to everyone and introducing the food. As all the best tavernas do, they offer their own twist on the classics. The moussaka here is made with finely sliced veal instead of minced meat, layered on top of sliced aubergines and finished with a bechamel sauce. To sample the best local wares though, let your server choose your dishes for you. It goes without saying, too, that you need to sample the local olives when you're there.  

The pace of life is slow in Kalamata but it has a lively nightlife. In the center, enjoy a perfectly mixed cocktail in Luna Loungeor local favorite, Bistroteca. The city can be enjoyed by all ages, making it one of best vacations for over 60s and families alike.

Top tip: Take a day trip to the village of Kardamylli, under one hour away from Kalamata. The sleepy village sits below the Taygetos Mountains so is ripe for hiking, but you'll get equal pleasure just taking in the charm of the settings. The drive through the narrow, sloping mountains is picturesque and relatively short but is admittedly quite terrifying if you're not used to Greek roads. During the summer season, buses run approximately three times a day.

5. Santorini

No list of the best places to visit in Greece would be complete without mentioning Santorini. Probably the most famous Greek island, Santorini is one of the top summer destinations worldwide and home to some of the best luxury hotels in the world. The island gets extremely busy during the peak summer months, making it one of the best places to visit in September or between March and April when it's marginally quieter. 

The windswept volcanic island is known for its whitewashed cubiform houses and mesmerizing sunsets. For the best viewpoint, close your day in the picturesque village of Oia. As one of the most photographed islands, you might feel as though you've already seen the Santorini blue domed churches, and volcanic coves - but experiencing it firsthand is an entirely different experience. As with everywhere in Greece, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to food. Try domatokeftedhes - tomato fritters made with sun-blushed Santorini tomatoes. Wash them down with a glass of Assyrtiko wine from one of the island's 20+ wineries. The microclimate of the island provides a fertile environment for the rare, high-acidity grape. 

Top tip: Consider finding a private tour guide - not only can they give you insider tips but they can help you navigate the island's winding vistas. More crucially, they'll know the best routes to avoid crowds. 

One of the best off-the-beaten-track islands in the Eastern Aegean, Ikaria is an unpretentious and relaxed island, nestled between Mykonos and Samos. It got its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus, who against his father's command, flew too close to the sun and fell into the sea near the island. With its beautiful beaches, endlessly friendly locals, brilliant local fare and healing thermal waters, it's not the worst place to land.

Despite its laid-back vibes, it's an energetic and vibrant island with a lively nightlife and feasts and all-ages parties that wage on until the early hours. As well as these parties, often thrown to mark religious celebrations (of which there are many), the island is also home to an international music festival, Ikaria festival as well as an annual international chess festival. Then of course there are its beaches; Seychelles Beach easily rivals the beauty of the beaches in its namesake, while Therma beach boasts mineral-rich hot springs. It's no wonder the locals are reportedly famous for their long and healthy lifespans. Speaking of which, don't leave the island without trying pefkomelo, the local pine honey. 

Top tip: Look out for a Panigiri while you're there, or try to plan around one. These are traditional feast days and celebrations that start in the afternoon and last until the morning, marking Saint's name days or other religious holidays. People travel from around the country to attend these and the celebrations can be large-scale with hundreds (or even thousands) of people. Expect lots of food, dancing and general joviality. 

Mykonos is known for its dry and windy climate, windmills, white streets, beautiful beaches - and of course, its nightlife. Despite its party reputation, however, the island caters to all interests and ages. Packed with luxury villas, hotels and premium restaurants, it's undoubtedly the best island for celebrity spotting and real VIP treatment. Start your day people-watching in the old town of Chora with a coffee. Your order, regardless of where you are in Greece should be a fredde espresso: a potent iced black coffee that comes with or without sugar. We recommend getting breakfast in Gioras Bakery, the oldest working bakery on the island which has belonged to the same family for over two centuries. Pick up a spanakopita, a filo pastry with layers of spinach, feta and crunchy, golden pastry. For a luxury dining experience, check out NOA which offers a modern taverna menu, with a big focus on farm-to-table dining. 

You're spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, but our favorite is Agios Sostis beach. Unspoiled, compact, and remote, there are no beach bars (or shelter) at this tranquil beach, so do bring your own towels - and lots of sun lotion. The island is windy, but don't let that fool you into thinking the sun isn't blazing hot. Next to the beach is Kiki's taverna, a haunt favored by locals, and for good reason. Open daily until the sun goes down, the restaurant offers stunning fresh food at reasonable prices. 

Consider taking a ferry to Syros, a neighboring island just 30 minutes away from Mykonos which has its own distinct personality. Cosmopolitan and Cycladic, the main town is built amphitheatrically on two hills, making for a unique landscape. It's definitely quieter than Mykonos but it's by no means sleepy and is packed with buzzing coffee shops, restaurants and live music venues. 

Top tip: Expensive doesn't equate to good quality, so plan your meals before you head out. It's easy to be coaxed into sitting somewhere with a nice sea view, particularly in the center of Chora and the beaches of Platis Gialos, but prices can be exorbitant and the quality of the food can be comparatively low. The island is brimming with unforgettable eateries, many of which are very reasonable, so plan before you head out. Similarly, research beach bars and restaurants before you visit them - some venues at Platis Gialos charge $50 for sub-par cocktails, while neighboring ones will offer drastically lower prices for the same setting and quality. 

Hydra, or Ydra as it's known in Greece is a quaint, bohemian island which is accessible via a two-hour ferry ride from Athens. It's completely car-free, meaning the only mode of transport is on a donkey, water taxi or on foot - which is how we explored it. It was a famous hotspot in the 1960s and 1970s for artists and musicians, perhaps most famously, Leonard Cohen, who lived on the island on and off for years (his house used to be marked by a plaque and street sign but in recent years, renovation works have made it harder to find). To this day, it has an artistic feel and is still a hotspot for international artists and writers. Spend your days getting lost in the backstreets and climbing the island's bastions before cooling off for a dip in its waters. While the island has some pleasant beaches, they're generally not super accessible by foot - so if that's how you're exploring the island, we'd recommend instead finding a good bathing spot, like Hydronetta - a bar carved into the coastline which serves soft drinks, snacks and cocktails from dusk 'til dawn. Here, you can access the sparkling (but often choppy) seas via a small ladder. There are pleasant beaches in the island but if you're looking for some of the best beaches in Greece, there are plenty of other islands you can go to. For us, Hydra's charm lies in the blissful lack of cars, its narrow streets and craggy coastline and its bohemian vibes. By night, there are scores of lively tavernas and fun bars that stay open until the last customer decides to leave.

Top tip: We'd recommend visiting off-season, in May or October time. At this time of year, accommodation is substantially cheaper, as are the prices in local tavernas and bars. 

9. Thessaloniki

Greece's vibrant second city, Thessaloniki offers culture, history, food and adventure, yet for some reason, it often gets overlooked as a city break destination. As far as Greek cities go, Athens can sometimes be overwhelming, but Thessaloniki is decidedly less dizzying - not to mention, much milder, meaning that summers are less sticky and humid. Although it's still throbbing with personality and has a buzzing arts, foodie and music scene, the pace is distinctly slower than the capital.

Start the day with the city's famous bougatsa, a breakfast pastry with custard encased in delicious flakey filo pastry. Walk along the seafront the city is best explored by foot. Marvel at the Walls of Thessaloniki, the churches, monasteries and Byzantine baths, all included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites (the city has 15 on the list in total). Visit the White Tower, a monument and museum at the waterfront of the city, built in the 15th century after the fall of Thessaloniki to the Ottomans. Next go to Aristotelous Square, the central square and beating heart of the city. By this point, you'll be hungry, so it's time to talk about food once again. Although there's a gentle rivalry between Athens and Thessaloniki, the country's second city is where you'll find the best cuisine. 

For meat-eaters, Opsopoion Maganeiai, which translates as 'magical cooking' delivers on its promise, serving up plates of exquisitely seasoned steak cuts with a small but well-curated menu of starters. It's fairly small, so book ahead. For vegetarian choices, head to rOOTS Vegetarian & Vegan Place, a metropolitan eatery with an expansive and creative menu. Although it's easy to find vegetarian appetizers everywhere in Greece, finding a dedicated vegetarian restaurant is tricky as a lot of the cuisine is centered around meat. Beyond those places, look out for little 'ouzeries' - small venues that serve glasses of strong local liquors of tsipouro or ouzo accompanied by meze dishes. Meanwhile, the gyros in Thessaloniki are unrivaled:  pitas packed with meat, tomato, onion, fries and tzatziki (once again, vegetarian options are easy to come by too, which is unusual in Greece).

Top tip: As per the rest of the country, the hottest months are in summer so the best times to catch the good weather are between July to September. However, in early November the city hosts the International Thessaloniki Film Festival making it one of the best places to visit in November if you're looking for a cultural fix. As it's an international festival, most films will have both English and Greek subtitles. 

10. Aeropoli / Limeni

Perhaps one of the best hidden gems in Europe, Aeropoli is a popular destination for Greek holiday-makers but less popular with international tourists. The largest town in Mani, Aeropoli is packed with tavernas, buzzing coffee shops and vibrant bars. It's also 3km away from the picturesque village of Limeni.

Aeropoli is perhaps the best vantage point for exploring the region thanks to its countless hotels and rustic guest houses. It's really only accessible by car, but if you do have your own transport, Gytheio and Sparta are easily accessible for daytrips. Kalamata is less than two hours away, so we recommend combining a trip to both if you're planning a trip to the region. It's also close to the Caves of Diros, a large underground network of fantastical rock formations, located just 11km south of the town. 

If you visit Aeropoli, don't leave without spending a day in Limeni though, a beautiful port town with sparkling emerald water and rocky cliffs. What makes the landscape particularly impressive, however, is the imposing stone towers which look more like forts or watchtowers, build high against the rugged rocks and roads, with few windows. A local told us that they were intentionally built to look menacing; with each family trying to build above the one next to them to show their seniority and power. The result is a rugged, impressive landscape that contrasts with the sparkling seas below. 

Top tip: Don't visit off-season. Unlike more touristy destinations on the list, many businesses close their shutters during the winter months, and driving conditions can become difficult too. 

Packed with quaint villages, towering mountains and exotic beaches, Pelion is a mountainous peninsula in Thessaly, the central part of the country. It's close to the major city of Volos, but there are strong transport links from Athens and Thessaloniki too. As with many parts of Greece, it's best explored by car so you can visit as many of its villages as you can, each with their own unique charm. Despite its central mainland location, Pelion feels decidedly off-grid, with its deserted beaches, sleepy villages and rich vegetation. 

In winter, head to the ski resort of Agriolefkes in Mount Pelion for an unforgettable winter snow holiday, and in summer, retreat from the world in the village of Makrinitsa, a quaint village with cobblestone streets and grand houses, or Portaria - a lush, green mountainous village. And let's not forget the beaches, Mylopotamos beach is probably the most famous and picturesque, divided into two parts by a dramatic rock formation. Whether you're looking for a beach holiday, hike, or just to wander around the villages, the unique landscape of Pelion accommodates all types of holidaymakers. 

Top tip: Think about what type of holiday you want and book accordingly. If you're hoping to ski, it's one of the best places to visit in January but if you want a hiking holiday, consider traveling in springtime when the temperatures are dry but cool. The busiest time for tourists is June, so, much like traveling to the rest of Greece, if you want to get the best flight deals, travel in May or September.

10 things I wish tourists knew before visiting Greece, from a local

• I'm from Athens, and I've seen plenty of tourists make mistakes while traveling to Greece .
• Pace yourself if you're planning on staying out at the bars and clubs all night.
• It's worth it to do some research on smaller islands and local cuisine before your trip.

Thanks to its ancient ruins, picturesque beaches, and incredible food, Greece is one of the top tourist destinations. In 2023, over 32 million people visited.

I was born in Athens and currently split my years living between the US and Greece , so I've spent plenty of time in the beautiful European country.

Here are 10 things I think tourists should know before visiting.

There’s so much more to see in Greece than the popular islands.

It seems like everyone visits Mykonos, Santorini, and maybe Paros, but Greece has over 220 inhabitable islands. Plus, most of them are more budget-friendly than the popular spots.

I recommend looking into places like Kimolos, Astypalaia, Paxoi (also known as Paxos and Paxi), or Folegandros.

The Greek mainland is also beautiful. There's a lot to see there, from UNESCO sites at Delphi and Meteora and the turquoise waters of the Peloponnese to the stunning mountains and villages of Epirus.

Athens is more than the Acropolis.

Athens has great nightlife , restaurants, museums, and cool neighborhoods like Plaka, Exarcheia, Psyrri, and Pangrati.

Tourists who just swing by to check the Acropolis off their list are missing out. I've always found it to be one of the liveliest cities in the world.

You don’t need to tip 20%.

Greek servers generally rely on hourly wages, so there isn't the same tipping culture as the US .

I normally just round up the bill or leave a couple of Euros on the table as a tip — unless I had exceptional service or dined at a more formal (and tourist-oriented) restaurant.

Pace yourself when drinking alcohol.

A lot of travelers take advantage of Greece's lax attitude toward alcohol restrictions. Coupled with the fact that Greek bars and clubs close pretty late (like 4 a.m. late), some tourists get sloppy.

Locals usually intersperse drinks with food and water so they can last the whole night, and I recommend tourists do the same.

Slow down and take Sundays off.

Greeks have a pretty relaxed relationship with time — people often arrive late and stores may open half an hour after they said they would.

Service in Greece can seem slow to people from more fast-paced places, especially on the quieter islands . A lot of stores and supermarkets are also closed on Sundays, even in Athens.

I know this can be annoying at times, but I recommend just enjoying the slower pace of life.

Don’t try to visit too many islands on one trip.

So many people ask me if they can fit four or five islands into a seven-day trip, and I never recommend it. Take your time and enjoy each destination for at least a couple of days.

Half the joy of the Greek islands is getting to destress. If you're hopping from ferry to ferry and running around to cover the highlights, you'll miss out on the best parts of the country.

Be sensitive about natural disasters.

I never thought I'd have to say this, but I have seen multiple tourists in the last few years posting about how "pretty" the skies or sunsets are thanks to the glow from raging wildfires .

At a time when a lot of Greek people are wondering if their houses are still standing or their loved ones have gotten to safety, it's a pretty insensitive thing to do.

Don't skip out on experiencing a traditional taverna.

Athens and other popular Greek destinations now have a lot of upscale restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. But make sure to eat in a traditional taverna at least once.

A taverna is a casual restaurant with family-style dining. Diners can spend hours in them chatting with friends while sharing food paired with some great wine or ouzo (a Greek aperitif).

Greek food is more than just gyros.

Well-known dishes like gyros and souvlaki are truly delicious, but Greek cuisine is so much more than that.

For example, a lot of Greeks start their day with a tiropita (cheese pie) and freddo coffee. Each region also has local specialties that I recommend inquiring about.

In tavernas, popular menu items include calamari, octopus, all kinds of fish, grilled and fried cheeses (like saganaki and halloumi), and side dishes like fava.

Learn a few local words.

Most younger Greek people understand English, but you may run into problems communicating with older people — especially in more rural areas.

Even if a local person can understand you, I think it's nice to learn a few simple words and phrases like "good morning," "thank you," and "how are you?"

It's nice when tourists make a little bit of an effort.

Greece Announces New Plan to Protect Some of Its Pristine Beaches

The government has pledged to crack down on rapid development, and on seaside businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom. But some residents and conservationists are unimpressed.

The Greek government on Friday published a list of 198 “untrodden beaches” that it said are now off limits to bars, restaurants and large public gatherings in its latest attempt to contain development and address the backlash to the throngs of tourists that descend on the country’s coastlines each year.

The move comes amid growing frustration among residents of Greek islands and parts of the coastal mainland that are popular with foreign visitors. Protests ballooned into a nationwide “beach towel movement” last summer as disgruntled locals complained that they were being pushed off their own beaches by businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom that brought more than 32 million foreign visitors to Greece last year .

On the country’s Cycladic islands, local residents joined forces with the authorities to push back against a wave of construction .

Greece’s conservative government has pledged to crack down on the development, and on seaside businesses that violate regulations. In February it passed a law aimed at regulating the use of the country’s coastline, imposing penalties of up to 60,000 euros for businesses occupying more than 50 percent of Greek beaches with umbrellas and sun beds.

Critics said the law did not go far enough to curb the problem, with some claiming that the government was perpetuating the issue by not tackling illegal land use more comprehensively.

The list of “untrodden beaches,” unveiled in a joint agreement between Greece’s finance and environment ministers, is part of a broader effort to restore balance, the government said. “The main goal is to combine environmental protection with sustainable development,” Kostis Hatzidakis, the economy and finance minister, said on Friday.

“The environment is a valuable component of the Greek tourist product,” he said.

Under the new initiative, the government was putting public assets “under a strict framework of rules, penalties and obligations,” Mr. Hatzidakis said. Inspections and transparency would be increased, as would “the enforcement of the law,” he added.

The beaches on the list are in areas included in the European Union’s Natura program, a network of vulnerable habitats across Europe that are protected under European law. Among the beaches listed on Friday are spots on popular islands such as Milos, Naxos, Lesbos, Samothrace and in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.

The islands were selected based on the advice of the country’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and are all “areas of high ecological importance,” Theodoros Skylakakis, the environment and energy minister, said on Friday.

Under the new initiative, no section of those beaches can be auctioned off for commercial use, and the presence of sun-loungers and umbrellas will be prohibited, as will the organization of public events involving more than 10 people.

Another initiative being introduced by the government is a new app called “MyCoast,” on which people can report violations.

Some environmentalists in Greece were not impressed by Friday’s announcement. Eleni Andrianopoulou, a resident of Naxos and a member of a local “Save the beaches” group, said the government’s original plan had been for more than 1,000 beaches nationwide to be covered, adding that Natura areas require “real protection.”

“From the beginning we had stressed that this reform for untrodden beaches was a fraud.”

Demetre Karavellas, director of the World Wildlife Fund Greece, said the authorities were jumping the gun with their list of pristine beaches, noting that there are more than 100 marine and coastal areas in Greece that are recognized by the Natura program but have yet to be effectively managed or conserved.

“The government should start by complying with its basic legal obligations before creating new vague categories of protection,” he said.
