Belgium! including the Bruges  Beer Festival

September 7-15, 2024.

I’m David Burstein, founder and President of European Beer Tours.  Like you, I share a passion for good beer, delicious food and adventurous travel.

I've always enjoyed discovering new beers and meeting the people who brew them. But our trips are about more than just good beer. When you travel with us, you’ll experience real local flavor. From the quaint neighborhood hotels where we stay, to the charming, local restaurants where we dine, we design all of our trips with immersive travel in mind .

David Burstein, founder of European Beer Tours, is packed for another Euro-trip!

Why European Beer Tours?

First and foremost, our staff is passionate about beer.  Most have worked in the beer industry either in breweries or as beer servers/guides,  are certified by the beer Cicerone Certification Program and many serve as beer judges in BJCP certified competitions.

Whether drinking Kolch in Cologne, Gueuze in Brussels, Helles in Munich or Sahti in Finland all of our trips explore the beer which is indigenous to the specific region or city.  Our trips include numerous brewery tours, many of which are given by the actual brewer. We also like to include one or two special events on each tour like a local beer festival. This allows our guests to sample beers from a vast array of breweries from many of the small, startup breweries and further promotes camaraderie within the group and the immersive philosophy.

Please take a moment to explore our website.  You'll find current, upcoming and past tours on our tour page.  Check back often as we are continually planning new and exciting beer adventures.  If you have a specific trip that you are interested in and it's not listed, send us an email - we also organize trips for private groups from 2 to 50 travelers.  And be sure to check out our tips page as it has valuable information for any type of travel.

Our Beercation Destinations

Bier + biere in belgium, stand up, raise your glass… twice.

Cheering like the locals can become quite an exercise in Belgium where it is considered polite to stand  – in Brussels – or to raise your glass twice – in Flanders. Belgium is a mecca for beer enthusiasts: The small country is dotted with breweries whose traditions go back hundreds of years. Belgian styles are anything but boring – try wild and funky lambics, seasonal farmhouse saison beers, and strong ales made in monasteries. And when in Belgium, you get to try specialty Trappist beers produced just for local consumption.

Visiting Belgium is a pilgrimage for beer enthusiasts!

Bier iN Germany

Prost, sister brewmaster.

Germany is full of surprises, especially when it comes to beer! Homeland to the Reinheitsgebot, Germany is also synonymous with a tradition to “trink Bier von hier”, a beloved tradition that dates back even further. Germans prefer their local brews and if a beer can’t be properly poured in the right glass for the style or brand, than it usually doesn’t get poured at all. Jawohl! Brewmasters in Germany come from all walks of life, including Sister Doris, a beloved nun and respected expert in Bavaria. Speaking of women brewers, the German gals take the lead on this expertise and blow the other countries out of the water!

What’s your Lieblings-Bier?

Birra iN Italy

Some truffles with your birra.

CinCin, carissimi Amici! Who would have guessed that Italy is an emerging craft beer destination, considering all the press that Italian grape products get. Pun intended!

Artisanal beer, once brewed in every village, was almost extinct by the 90’s. Nowadays, there are 700  birrifici artigianali and counting, plus an abundance of beer festivals to enjoy them at!

Just like you must taste your way through authentic regional dishes to get an understanding of real Italian food, one must drink many a birra artigianale for a better understanding of the diversity. Now, truffle beer is something we may not ever want to taste again…

Impress the locals by drinking a Birra Grande!

Cerveza iN Spain

Beer for breakfast,  amigos.

Cerveza Artesanal Españalo is a must-try! There are close to 1,000 microbreweries aka Microvercecería in Spain, some dating back hundreds of years! The majority, despite hardly being known outside the country, are well established and regionally cherished. New places are always popping up, too. It’s always fun to be one of the first people to check out a new hot spot.

Sample traditional beers that you can’t get in the USA, or try creative takes on brews with sea water or even anchovies as the featured ingredient!

If Spanish craft beer alone wasn’t tempting enough – Iberian brews are never served alone. Luckily, a tasty T apa , a Pintxo iN Basque Country where people cheer saying “Topa!” or, like in Granada, a full-sized appetizer accompanies each pour.

And Sì , it’s quite common to have a beer with breakfast, although not as common as red wine.

Some  Jamón Ibérico with your Sackman cerveza in Madrid?

BIERE iN France

Santé: from mont blanc to côte d’azure.

Mais oui, France is home to the most Michelin-star restaurants, Chablis, Bourdeaux & Co, but also boasts a wide selection of Bière Artisanale Française. Last, but not least, the Brasserie is where the French head for happy hour and a good simple meal.

Discovering craft beer in France is a never-ending adventure, taking you away from the beaten path and into small(er) villages of the less touristy neighborhoods of Paris, Marseille and Lyon. The French don’t talk much about their craft beer, but they sure drink a lot of it – even on top of the Mont Blanc. But that’s a longer story…

Blonde or Amber? Which one do you like?

Cheers, Prost, Santé, Salud, CinCin…

Drink with the locals, like a local, we take you wherever great beer is made in europe. experience major beer destinations and festivals, but also smaller hidden gems off the beaten path that you may have never heard of., taste your favorite european brews right from the source sample new beers and styles, eat great food, and make new friends., our journeys are passion and people-centric – created anew by our team, for you, cross-drinkers are always welcome, our beer destinations.

A close relationship to our destinations is key for us at iNSIDE EUROPE.

  • Daniel M 0 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommended, history with drinks included The guides were very knowledgeable but also provided a very relaxed and affable experience. There is a lot of walking and some fairly long stretches without a beer, so the only suggestion I have would be shuffling how soon you get the first "walking beer". But it was a lovely time and I would do it again. “A frothy mix of history, culture, fine cuisine and local brews.”

In Europe, good beer and the good life go hand in hand. “I’m a brew-geek, so for me it was the perfect mix of brewery tours and beer-bar experiences. On the process side, I enjoyed seeing the differences in the brewing processes from region to region and from large to smaller scale operations On the drinking side it was an amazing to try so many different styles. Craig is an awesome guide with enthusiasm and energy to match his knowledge. You can tell he loves the history of places and that makes it fun to hear and learn about stuff as we go. I’d be more than happy to have him as a guide again any day.”   Tony – Ultimate Beer Tour

“From working in the hospitality industry, I tend to be picky when it comes to the travel and leisure arena. However, from start to finish, our entire experience with Craig and the Ultimate Beer Tour not only met but far exceeded our expectations. We shall take another tour in the future as traveling with Craig is the only way to go.”   Lara and Mickey – Ultimate Beer Tour

Day 1: welcome to belgium, day 1:  welcome to belgium.

We’ll meet at our centrally located hotel in medieval Bruges in the late afternoon and have a  welcome drink  with an  expert on Belgian Beer  and proprietor of one of the best beer cafés in Bruges!  This evening we will enjoy a beer themed dinner at  Bierbrasserie Cambrinus  (named for the a legendary Flemish king with a particular enthusiasm for beer).

Sleep in Bruges (3 nights)  / Bus: none / Walking: Light

Meals provided:  Dinner

Day 2: In Bruges

In the morning we’ll walk a few minutes to Market Square and ascend the 366 steps of the Belfort to get a bird’s eye view of this Gothic city. After a walking tour, including visits at the Church of the Holy Blood and Michelangelo ’s Madonna of Bruges, we will enjoy a tour of  De Halve Maan Brewery – the oldest functioning Bruges based brew house where the entertaining and passionate “brew guide” will reinforce your belief that beer is the greatest of all human inventions.  After we will lunch together at the oldest pub in Bruges (opened in 1515!).  After lunch, you will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore Bruges as you wish – equipped with some great advice from your tour director.

Sleep in Bruges / Bus: none / Walking: Moderate

Meals provided: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: War and Peace

After breakfast we’ll meet our friendly Dutch bus driver, who will drive us out to the small Flemish town of Ypres, which had the misfortune to be located in the middle of some of the worst fighting in WW I – half a million people died in the fields surrounding this town – Flanders Fields . There we’ll visit the Menin Gate and the Flanders Fields WW I Museum. Then it’s off to the Abbey of Saint Sixtus – the monks there brew Westvleteren , the most sought after and elusive Trappist beer in the world. We’ll enjoy it right from the Abbey’s café and tap house, In De Vrede (“in the peace”). Another short drive and we will be in the centre of Belgium’s hop growing region, Poperinge , where we’ll learn all about this miraculous plant and taste it in a very special local beer.  Back to Bruges for an evening on your own – perhaps for a nice boat ride down Bruges’ scenic canals .

Sleep in Bruges / Bus: 3 hours / Walking: Light

Day 4: Netherlands and Rhinelands

In the morning we will board the bus and say goodbye to Bruges as we head East over the border to Tilburg. There we will visit the oldest Trappist Brewery in the Netherlands, De Koningshoeven, brewers of the extensive line of La Trappe beers.  After a tour of the brewery, lunch and a couple of beers, we’ll cross yet another border into Germany, where we will sample the only beer that truly can be called Kölsch during our visit to Köln (aka Cologne).  We’ll also visit the world famous Cologne Cathedral , and climb the massive towers (if you don’t want to climb, I won’t make you!).  In the evening we will settle into our hotel in the centre of historic Heidelberg , just down the street from some fantastic brew-pubs.

Sleep in Heidelberg (1 night) / Bus: 4.5 hours / Walking: Light

Day 5: Dukes and Dunkels

We continue our exploration of Germany with a couple of key stops today. First we will visit the Heidelberg Castle , home to the medieval Duke of Bavaria, taking an exclusive guided tour of the interior. After some free time to explore Old Town Heidelberg and visit one (or more) of the local breweries, we will depart for Bamberg, passing through territory that was once the centre of the early National Socialist movement, and your tour director will provide you with some historical perspective.  On the outskirts of Bamberg, we will stop at the family run Gänstaller Bräu brewery for a private tour and tasting of their amazing beers!  Brewer Andreas Gänstaller, considered by many to be the best brewer in the world, will amaze you with his tasty creations.  A short drive later and we will arrive in Bamberg in time for our first Bamberg brew house experience where we will share a traditional Franconian meal at Spezial, one of Bamberg’s cherished local brewpubs.

Sleep in Bamberg (2 nights) / Bus 5.5 hours / Walking: Light

Meals provided: Breakfast and dinner

Day 6: Bamberg = Beer

In the morning, tour members are welcome to join me on a vigorous walk to the Altenburg Castle on the highest hill overlooking the town, or you can sleep in to save energy for the day ahead. After breakfast, we will set out to explore this UNESCO world heritage town. Combining the history, architecture and beer of Bamberg is a unique joy – the tour seems to get more jovial after each brewery stop! We’ll visit the large Franconian Brewing Museum in the former Benedictine Abbey Michaelsberg and several of the local brewpubs. Beer in Bamberg is a passion for the locals, and their brewmasters craft some especially delicious brews. Most unique of all is the Rauchbier – brewed using an ancient method where the barley is “smoked”.

Sleep in Bamberg / Bus: none / Walking: Moderate to Strenuous (your choice)

Day 7: Czech it out!

Our hearty German breakfast will be followed by a journey across the former Iron Curtain border into the Czech Republic. We’ll stop for lunch in Plzeň (Pilsen) – and visit the Pilsner Urquell Brewery where history was made in 1842 when the first batch of Pilsner beer was brewed. Pilsner may be one of the most widely copied beer styles in the world, but there’s nothing quite so good as the original, and Czechs take special pride in this. A little further to the east and we will be in Prague, where we will will visit  Wenceslas Square, where the Velvet Revolution that ended communism in Czechoslovakia took place, and then head out for some delicious beer and snacks from Prague’s burgeoning microbrewery scene .

Sleep in Prague (2 nights) / Bus: 4 hours / Walking: Moderate

Meals provided: Breakfast and lunch (and late afternoon snacks)

Day 8: Bohemian Rhapsody

Rhapsody: a state of elated bliss. Which is the state you will be in having an entire day in the magnificent capital of Bohemia, Prague . We will tour the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter, and the Prague Castle before settling in for a Czech feast at the the Strahov Monastic Brewery on a hill overlooking the city. The evening will be yours to explore the city’s many watering holes or just stroll the cobblestone streets and the Charles Bridge .

Sleep in Prague / Bus: none / Walking: Moderate

Day 9: River’s Bend

We say farewell to Prague and head out to the Czech countryside to visit the fairytale town of Cesky Krumlov , situated on a scenic bend in the Vltava River.  On our way south we’ll stop at the original, REAL Budweiser brewery to see their visitor centre and decide if we prefer the “beer of kings” or the “king of beers”.  On the July trip, weather permitting, we will take a  rafting excursion down the easy-flowing river, stopping for a riverside picnic, and arriving in Cesky Krumlov in style!  Our driver will continue on into town with our luggage and anyone who would prefer to not risk getting wet. Once in town, we’ll visit the castle and its unique baroque tower before dining together on hearty bohemian food and beer.

Sleep in Cesky Krumlov / Bus: 2.75 hours / Walking: Moderate

Day 10: The Old Country

We return to Bavaria today, perhaps the region of Europe most synonymous with beer, especially BIG beer. Beer and history are deeply intertwined here, so we might as well go to the source – Weihenstephan Abbey – the oldest brewery in the world. It will be celebrating its 1000th anniversary in 2040. Yes. One Thousandth.  Then in Munich we will have a short orientation walk in the historic centre, after which you will be free to explore on your own and possibly visit the historic Augustiner Keller.

Sleep in Munich (2 nights)/ Bus: 4.5 hours / Walking: Moderate

Day 11: Eins, zwei, g'suffa

Day 11: eins, zwei, g’suffa.

Our final full day together will begin with some free time in this great city – maybe to visit the Residenz (palace of the Bavarian royalty ) or the Deutsches Museum of Science and Technology or even the BMW Museum. We will regroup in the afternoon for a beer tour of Munich. We’ll have dinner together at a local brewery, and will end the tour at the world famous Hofbräuhaus , hoisting a Maß, singing “Eins, zwei, g’suffa” (one, two, drink) with the oompah band and celebrating our time together in Europe’s greatest beer destinations !  Note that on the Oktoberfest version of the tour, we will have a reservation at one of the big beer tents and spend the day enjoying Oktoberfest on this day.

Sleep in Munich / Bus: none / Walking: Moderate

Day 12: Auf Wiedersehen

The tour is over after breakfast. Your tour director will be happy to give you advice on your further adventures in Europe if you are staying on, and if you are heading home – the Munich International Airport is a short train ride away. Auf Wiedersehen !

The Fine Print – What You Get:

Not so much fine print:  We believe in up front pricing, not a hard-to-read long list of extra costs. Group Size:  We run small group tours, about half the size of a normal big bus tour. The Ultimate Beer Tour operates with no more than 24 tour members, usually fewer but never more, plus a tour director and a driver. Transportation:  Transportation is in a private chartered coach. Lots of free space on the bus to stretch out and relax!  Transportation to and from airport is your responsibility. Both Bruges (first town) and Munich (last town) are well served by train connections and close to major airports. Activity level:  The Ultimate Beer Tour is suitable to people with a basic fitness level. You will need to carry your own bags, climb hotel stairs, and keep a leisurely to moderate pace on city walking tours.  This trip is suitable for adults only (you know, because of the beer). Accommodations:  We choose generally smaller, family-run hotels, in the 3-4 star category, that are close to the action, rather than large impersonal hotels in some industrial park outside of town. All rooms have private ensuite bathrooms with shower or bathtub. Most rooms are doubles.

  • Solo travelers: You may choose to pay extra for one of the limited number of single private rooms, or you can room with another solo traveler in the group of the same gender (if available) and skip the extra fee.
  • Couples: Couples will usually share a room with one double bed (larger Queen and King beds are not common in Europe).
  • Two friends traveling together: Two friends or siblings traveling together will be roomed together with two beds in a twin room where possible. Note: some European twin beds share one headboard but they will always have separate sheets.
  • Triple room: A typical triple room will be one double bed and one single bed, rollaway or cot.
  • Sightseeing tours and attractions:  This is the main reason you are in Europe, and we understand this! Led by your OneLife tour director, and local guides when appropriate. Entrance fees to all attractions are included. Most tour companies sell many of their attractions as expensive “optional excursions” which add up really quickly. Not us.
  • Meals:  Breakfasts are always included. Note that because we stay in characteristic European hotels, breakfasts will reflect local preferences. Many lunches/dinners are on us – the rest are up to you. See itinerary for breakdown.
  • Gratuities:  Unlike most tour companies who ask you to pay a “mandatory” tip to the driver and guide, at Eat and Drink Like a European tipping is not required.

16 Cities In Europe Every Beer Lover Should Visit

Beers on wall near river

From iconic monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa to breathtaking landscapes like the Matterhorn and the Cliffs of Moher, Europe's got a lot to offer when it comes to tourism. This culturally-rich continent also boasts an unrivaled beer culture that includes styles as varied as pilsners and stouts. On top of the myriad styles, Europe's beer scene is unique in its ability to blend centuries-old brewing traditions with innovative craft methods.

To celebrate the magic that is European beer, we've curated a list of must-visit cities that every beer lover should visit at least once. In this article, you'll find all the legendary beer capitals along with some new kids on the block. Not only do each of these destinations offer you the chance to savor exceptional brews, but their brewpubs, festivals, and tours provide the opportunity to immerse yourself in their vibrant beer cultures. So grab your passport and get ready for a beer-filled adventure you'll never forget.

Munich, Germany

Few cities are as closely associated with beer as Munich. Every year, Bavaria's capital city is home to Oktoberfest, a 16-day festival celebrating German culture, food, and, of course, beer. Märzen lager is the unofficial  Oktoberfest beer , but all kinds of tipples are available.

Outside of the festival season, Munich is still a must-visit European beer city, if only for its massive beer halls. The Hofbräuhaus, a 3,000-seat tavern dating back 500 years, is the most famous, but it's not the only one worth visiting. Spots like Augustiner-Bräustuben and Löwenbräukeller provide the same raucous atmosphere, minus the massive crowds.

If the weather's nice, then relax with a beer al fresco at one of Munich's many beer gardens. We recommend Biergarten Viktualienmarkt (a centrally-located drinking spot close to Munich's top restaurants), Chinesischer Turm (a restaurant-slash-beer garden housed next to the Chinese Tower), and Augustiner Keller (a popular spot serving up soft pretzels and melt-in-your-mouth ribs).

Dublin, Ireland

If you love a good stout, then you'll be right at home in Dublin, the Republic of Ireland's beautiful capital. Not only is this city of 1.2 million people the home of Guinness (the world's most famous stout) , but it also boasts plenty of craft breweries that are shaking up traditional Irish beer culture.

Every day is a lovely day for a Guinness at the seven-story headquarters located at the historic site of St. James's Gate. After touring the massive facility, sip on a creamy pint in the Gravity Bar, a rooftop spot offering a 360-degree view of the city. Looking to hone your bartending skills? Then practice the six-step pouring process at the Guinness Pouring Academy.

After you've had your fill of Guinness, why not try some of the city's beloved craft breweries? BrewDog Outpost, Farrier & Draper, and P. Mac's are just a few of our favorites.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen might not spring to mind when you think of famous beer cities , but forgetting it would be a mistake. The Danish capital is home to Carlsberg, which has been marketed as "probably the best beer in the world." You can learn more about Carlsberg's lofty slogan and storied history by visiting the Carlsberg Visitor Centre. After the tour, make sure to grab a pint of Carlsberg, Tuborg, or Jacobsen Housebrew at the Jacobsen Brewhouse and Bar.

If lagers aren't your thing, then head to one of the city's many up-and-coming craft breweries. With its global reach, Mikkeller & Friends is one of the city's best-known breweries. The Nørrebro location features 40 rotating beers on tap, plus tons of bottled options. Warpigs Brewpub is another must-see. This funky spot is a collaboration between Mikkeller and 3 Floyds, an American brewery. It's famous for its extra-hoppy IPAs and dark barrel-aged beers, not to mention some of the most authentic Texas barbecue outside of the Lone Star State.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is better known for its cannabis culture than its beer, but the city widely referred to as the Venice of the North knows how to sling brews with the best of them. For starters, the Dutch capital is the birthplace of Heineken, one of the world's best-selling beers. At the Heineken Experience, you can learn all about the company's history, witness the Heineken brewing process, and sip a chilly pint on the rooftop terrace.

Looking for something a little more off the beaten path? Amsterdam's got plenty of craft breweries to choose from. For example, there's Brouwerij 't IJ, a small brewery serving everything from crisp lagers to hoppy IPA that's located inside an authentic windmill — what could be more Dutch than that? Elsewhere, with experimental beers like Funky Frog (a sour beer made with grapefruit), Two Chefs Brewing is one of the more unique options Amsterdam has to offer.

Antwerp, Belgium

Best known for its Diamond District and Flemish Renaissance architecture, Antwerp doesn't have the beer city reputation of Brussels or Leuven, but it's still well worth the visit. Antwerp is a melting pot of Belgian, Dutch, and German beers. Whether you prefer your beer refreshing and light or heavy and dark, you'll have no trouble finding a tasty brew here.

If you're an ale enthusiast then you may already be aware of the drink De Koninck Bolleke, an iconic aspect of Antwerp beer culture if ever there was one. Bolleke is a colloquial term for a bowl-shaped beer glass, whereas Koninck refers to the Antwerp-based brewery that produces the malty, light amber ale the city is famous for.

To add to its beer-city cred, Antwerp is home to several yearly beer festivals. Every November, Billie's Craft Beer Fest welcomes beer lovers from all over the world to nerd out over their favorite brews. Come summertime, the Antwerp Beer Passion Weekend offers visitors the chance to sample over 200 types of Belgian beers.

London, England

Not only is England's capital home to more than 120 breweries, but the city is full of cozy, historical pubs, happening beer gardens, and even a handful of alcohol-free bars. According to many accounts, the city was also instrumental in launching the craft beer revolution in the late 1970s. Needless to say, you won't have any trouble finding a decent beer in merry old London.

However, it's not the number of places in London that impresses the most. Rather, it's the variety of unique locations these watering holes have set up shop in. Some notable locations include The Barrel Project, a taproom hidden underneath a Victorian railway arch, and the Tavern Bar at The Dickens Inn, a converted warehouse.Per the pub's website , this place is "proudly doing what British pubs do best: a good honest pint, friendly faces and top grub."

Also, as a testament to its rich beer culture, London is home to several beer festivals like the Great British Beer Festival, the London Craft Beer Festival, and BrewLDN, to name but a few.

Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw was named one of the world's top craft beer cities by CNN  in 2019, and it has only gotten better for brews since then. A big part of Poland's success in the craft beer scene is the country's lack of beer brewing tradition. That may sound like a negative, but it's not. Rather, having the freedom to experiment with new techniques has been an instrumental part in creating Poland's craft beers.

The country's capital city is one of the centers of the country's craft beer revolution. Located in Old Warsaw, Nowogrodzka Street is the place to go for the best bars. Here, you'll find Drugie Dno, a six-tap gastropub housed in a tenement house that's over a hundred years old. Not far from that is Kufle i Kapsle, a craft beer pub with 16 rotating taps and a 150-beer bottle selection. Jabeerwocky and Same Krafty are some of the city's most decorated brewpubs, both making appearances on Enjoy Travel 's 50 Best Craft Beer Bars in Europe.

Prague, Czech Republic

When a country has a patron saint of beer and a national beer celebration that lasts for two weeks, you know brewskis are a big part of the culture. Czech Beer Days takes place in September and is dedicated to all things beer. "St. Wenceslas Day, the 28th of September, is a national holiday, celebrating Václav I's legacy of helping unify Bohemia," explains Prague Morning . "But he is also considered the patron saint of beer."

Once the festival season is over, grab a pint at one of Prague's many historical watering holes. Pivovar Sv. Norbert Strahov, a monastery brewery located just steps from Prague Castle, is arguably one of the city's best locales. We also recommend a visit to U Kunštátů, a craft beer bar and beer garden serving up dozens of craft options. And don't forget to explore the Staropramen complex before you leave — it's the country's second-largest brewery in terms of sales and the perfect representation of a traditional Czech pilsner beer.

Bern, Switzerland

On top of being the actual capital of Switzerland (a fact that often surprises people), Bern carries the unofficial designation of being Switzerland's capital of beer. Indeed, the city that Toblerone Chocolate built is home to more than 200 breweries and microbreweries. Bern even has its own beer, Bärner Müntschi, an unfiltered, unpasteurized lager made by the Felsenau family brewery.

Altes Tramdepot is one of the city's best breweries, serving up natural, unfiltered brews without chemical additives. In addition to a rotating selection of beers, the brewery has a great selection of permanent offerings including tram beers like Helles and Märzen. Be sure to also check out Barbière, a restaurant-slash-microbrewery serving up a rotating selection of IPAs, ales, and stouts. What's great about Bern is that you don't even have to go out to enjoy some of the city's best tipples — Kurbel Braeu Brewery will deliver your beers via bike anywhere in the city.

Brussels, Belgium

In addition to being home to the European Parliament, Brussels is an ideal weekend destination and a beer-lover's paradise. For starters, this bustling city of 1.2 million people is home to The Museum of Belgian Brewers, an intimate locale dedicated to 18th-century brewing techniques, mugs, and carafes. After the tour, head to one of the city's many bars and sample some of Belgium's finest beers.

With its world record 2,004 local and international beers, Delirium Cafe is an obvious place to start. Here, you'll find everything from traditional Belgian Abbey beers to off-the-wall favorites like Floris Chocolat, a chocolate-infused beer. Continue your exploration of the city's beer culture with a visit to Á La Bècasse, an old-timey bar specializing in Kriek, a traditional cherry-flavored beer. If the weather's nice, head to The Saint-Géry Market Halls, a 19th-century open-air market offering a selection of more than 100 beers.

Pilsen, Czech Republic

If the name looks familiar, it's because you've seen it before. Pilsen, a small city located 56 miles west of Prague, is the birthplace of pilsner beer. This pale, golden lager first made an appearance in 1842 when local brewers tried to replicate the popular Bavarian lagers of the day. The local ingredients (Moravian barley, Bohemian Saaz hops, and soft Pilsen water) didn't produce the desired product, but rather the world's first pilsner. Unfortunately, the original brewers never patented the name. As a result, pilsner-style beers started popping up all over Europe.

In 1898, Bürger Brauerei trademarked "the original pilsner," aka Pilsner Urquell. You'll have no trouble finding a spot to try Pilsen's favorite beer — you can even tour the Pilsner Urquell brewery. If you need a break from the pilsners, head to Klub Malých Pivovarů, a beer bar highlighting beers from the Bohemia region and beyond. Or, there's Raven Pub City & Bolevec, a centrally-located bar serving every type of beer you can imagine.

Cologne, Germany

Move over Munich, Cologne is making waves in the beer world. Germany's fourth-largest city is the birthplace of Kölsch, a pilsner-style beer that blends the top-fermenting yeasts used in ale brewing with the low temperatures of lager brewing. The result is a low-alcohol, easy-to-drink beer with light fruity notes.

Given how proud Cologne is of its beer, you'll have no trouble finding a spot to down a tall glass. Founded in 1883, Päffgen is Cologne's oldest house brewery and makes one of the best (if not the best) Kölsches in the city. As the city's second-oldest Kölsch brewery, Mühlen is another solid option.

For something beyond Kölsch, head to Heller. This organic-certified brewery features pilsners, wiesses, and a rotating seasonal selection of wheat beers. Braustelle, Cologne's smallest brewery, offers wheat IPAs, pale ales, and Pink Panther, a fruity ale made with hibiscus flowers.

Strasbourg, France

Although Alsace, the region where Strasbourg is located, is known for its white wines , it's impossible to ignore the nascent beer culture emerging in this eastern region of France. Brasserie Saint-Pierre is one of the region's largest craft breweries. Since 2001, it's been concocting everything from IPAs and stouts to fruit beers — blueberry beer, anyone? Try a tasting flight at the in-house bar, take a guided tour, or make your own brew at a beer-making workshop.

Bendorf Brewery is another unmissable spot when visiting Strasbourg. Since 2013, this craft brewery has been selling an impressive collection of both permanent and seasonal beers. Some of their flagship products include Kollane Lill, a pale ale, À L'ombre des Pensées, a white IPA, and Les Abysses du Baggersee, a 10% imperial stout. There are plenty of places for beer lovers to visit in this beautiful city.

Wrocław, Poland

Poland is better known for being part of the Vodka Belt , but Wrocław, a city of 640,000 located in Western Poland, is a beer city through and through. Locals even refer to it as The Polish City of Beer. Unlike other parts of the country that are just starting to get into the beer game, Wrocław has long been associated with the frothy stuff. Thanks to its location between Germany and the Czech Republic, the city's beer culture has been influenced by Bavarian wheat beers and Czech pilsners for centuries.

These days, Wrocław's Browar Stu Mostów is Poland's biggest and most popular brewery. This ten-tap brewpub pours unique offerings like WRCLW, a Baltic nitro porter, and Salamander, a low-alcohol sessionable IPA. Another one of our favorites is 4HOPS, a 16-tap bar with plenty of Polish beers to sample. Can't choose just one beer? Then sample a bunch on Wrocław's Craft Beer Tour or visit the city's annual Good Beer Festival in May.

Belgrade, Serbia

An up-and-coming European beer city, Belgrade is worth the visit if you find yourself in the area (plus, Serbian food is to die for). Opened in 2014, Kabinet Brewery is one of the city's most famous brands. Some of its top sellers include Brrkaaa, a citrusy American pale ale, and SuperNova, Serbia's first IPA. You can sample Kabinet's offerings at Samo Pivo, a craft beer bar housed in an abandoned mall, and Gunner's Pub, a cozy 16-tap bar.

Dogma Brewery & Tap Room is another stand-out in the Serbian capital. From its hop-heavy Zuma Mountain IPA to its more accessible Light House Pale Ale, every beer drinker will find something to suit their palate at Dogma. For a truly local experience, head to The Black Turtle, an Irish-inspired brewpub offering a mix of Belgian and German-style beers, plus some fruity options for good measure. If you're in town in June, you can't miss Belgrade Beer Fest, a four-day celebration of local brews and music.

Leuven, Belgium

You've probably never heard of this small Flemish city located 16 miles east of Brussels, but we're willing to bet that you've tried at least one of its beers. That's because Leuven is home to AB InBev, the world's largest brewery. Some of its best-known products include Budweiser, Corona, and Busch. In addition to these staple college party beers, AB InBev manufactures a number of Belgian-style beers like Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and Leffe.

While there's no ignoring AB InBev's influence in Leuven, it's the city's microbreweries that make it a must-visit European beer destination. Located just a stone's throw from Leuven's Oude Markt, a bustling town square, is Huisbrouwerij Domus, a well-loved brewery known for its old-fashioned lagers and ales. Hof ten Dormaal Brewery, a small, family-owned operation is another favorite, thanks to its experimental barrel-aged beers made with local ingredients. And we can't forget to mention Braxatorium Parcensis, a brewery that brews its beers in an actual abbey. This is without a doubt a city that every beer lover should visit .

Best Beer Trips in Europe

In these cities, beer is an integral part of culture and heritage.

From the September 2010 issue of National Geographic Traveler

With a declaration of “O’zapft is!” (It’s tapped!), Munich’s mayor kicks off Oktoberfest, first celebrated 200 years ago in honor of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig. The Wiesn (as locals call the fest) has since evolved into a 16-day toast to Bavaria’s rich heritage, attracting millions and spawning spin-offs worldwide. But Munich is just one of the myriad cities where beer has been a part of life since the Middle Ages, when it was safer to drink than water. Parched? Here’s where to get a taste.

Munich: Community Gardens

The home of Oktoberfest has been hailed as one of the world’s most livable cities. Nowhere is the sense of gemütlichkeit —loosely translated, a communal warmth—felt more keenly than at the city’s 36 beer gardens. City residents have been going for centuries to places such as the Hirschgarten or Paulaner am Nockherberg to enjoy a mug of Bavarian brew and a typical BYO picnic of salted white radish, pretzels, and obatzda (a savory mash of cheeses, onions, and spices). The biergarten first sprouted on the banks of chestnut tree–lined Isar River because it   was the coolest place to store beer during summer months, when brewing was forbidden by Germany’s purity laws.

Breweries in Munich, in fact, still follow 15th-century regulations stipulating that beer be brewed using only barley, hops, and water. Among the city’s most storied institutions are the state-run Hofbrauhaus , on Old Town’s Platzl, and Augustiner Bräu , known for its signature Helles (a golden lager).

But during the approximately 16 days preceding the first Sunday in October, all the action shifts to the 14 massive beer tents—each accommodate thousands—outside the city. Entrance to Oktoberfest itself is free, but drinks (about 10   bucks for a liter beer), parade tickets, and the obligatory souvenir stein can add up.

Amsterdam: Beyond the Green Bottle

Heineken is an Amsterdam icon, along with tulips, bikes, and canals. But the beer scene in the Dutch capital in 2010 goes well beyond the pale lager in the signature green bottle that put it on the map. Craft brewers have sprung up in the last 25 years, riffing on traditional lagers, Belgian-style beers, and bokbiers, a strong malty German brew.

Most quaffing is done in “brown cafés,” the convivial pubs found in old neighborhoods, such as the cozy Café Gollem near the Spui, where patrons duck in for a beer and a game of snooker. On sunny afternoons, young Amsterdammers point their bicycles toward the Leidseplein, the heart of the city’s social scene, to grab an outdoor table and a frothy draft at one of the café terraces.

But craft beer connoisseurs make a beeline to Brouwerij ’t IJ , a former public bathhouse east of the city center. Regulars line up before the brew pub opens every afternoon to ensure their fill of the coveted elixirs, from the hoppy pils to the robust ijbok, before it closes at 8 p.m. Missed it? Some of the brewery’s beers are poured in the Jordaan neighborhood at the canal-side Café ’t Smalle.

Brussels: Variety Pack

Centuries before Brussels became the staid, buttoned-up seat of the European Union bureaucracy, the city was a brewing mecca, known for its lambic, a bracingly tart and bone-dry brew naturally fermented with wild yeast. While the city has shed its provincial image to emerge as one of the Continent’s coolest capitals, the beer continues to flow—some 600 varieties throughout the country, from bright witbiers to rich Trappist ales. Lambic still rules in Brussels, but most of what is consumed today is infused with fruit, like morello cherries. Sample multiple styles at the Cantillon brewery in the Anderlecht section.

Serious beer drinking, however, is reserved for the city’s ubiquitous cafés, where the beer menus are as thick as novellas. At the famed Delirium Café in the old town’s Ilot Sacré, for instance, one can choose from more than 2,000 brews, including several vintage lambics, each served in its own special vessel (Belgians are sticklers for proper glassware). For a more streamlined beer list and a prime people-watching perch, try the art deco brasserie A La Mort Subite off the Grand Place with its 13th-century guild houses.

Dublin: Mother’s Milk

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

Ireland boasts many a delicious brew, but none as near and dear to the hearts of Dubliners as the toasty stout with the thick creamy head that is Guinness. Practically everyone of drinking age (18 and up) has an opinion on where in town to get a proper pint of the black stuff, as it is known. But start at St. James’s Gate Brewery, where Guinness has been brewed since 1759, for a look at an exhibition on the company’s 250-year history, including the ads (“Guinness Is Good For You”) that helped make it a household name. A free sample awaits at the seventh-floor Gravity Bar , worth a stop for its sweeping view of Dublin alone.

As for that second pint, there are some 800 pubs in the city from which to choose, many concentrated along the cobblestone streets of Temple Bar, the city’s cultural hub, where the craic, or entertainment, is always lively and downright boisterous as night falls. Eamonn Doran’s is famous for its live music—The Cranberries got their start here. The more intimate Palace Bar hosts occasional “trad” (traditional Irish) bands. Literary sorts head to Mulligan’s to rub shoulders with locals and pay homage to former patron James Joyce.

Prague: The Original

Beer is deeply rooted in the Czech psyche. And, at less than two bucks for a half-liter glass, it’s a relative bargain. But this is no swill. In many ways, Czech beer is the standard by which all others are measured, including the original Budweiser (or “Budvar”) and Pilsner Urquell, which was developed in Plzen in 1842 in response to a “beer party”—townspeople dumped barrels of beer to protest its poor quality.

In Prague , however, Staropramen reigns. More steins of the brewery’s crisp lager are hoisted in the capital’s cavernous beer halls than just about any other brand. Traditionally, bars pour only one type of beer as advertised by the sign outside, like U Dvou Kocek, rumored to pull the tastiest Urquell in Prague. Another Prague institution is U Fleku , a rambling pub in New Town that has been brewing its own caramel-hued lager for 500 years. As at most crowded beer houses here, strangers may have to sidle up next to each other at long wooden tables—a good way to meet locals, whose initial brusqueness is usually tamed by successive refills, especially when the discussion veers toward beer.

The 4 Best Brewery & Beer Tours in Germany

by Alexandra | Sep 20, 2022 | Destinations , Europe

A nice evening with friends includes a cold beer. Since we may not be able to sit on the Riviera, we still have the option to indulge in beer. This is the perfect solution for us as it’s the world-famous beer for a reason. We have put together the four best brewery and beer tours in Germany for you, one tour for each direction. Now you can explore Germany in a different way. Cheers to that!

Brewery Tour in the North

Two Pilsner beers on a table in Germany

Starting in the small village of  Bagband, which lies in the heart of East Frisia.  The Ostfriesen Bräu brewery is known for a dark country beer with an award as the ‘European Beer Star.’ Not once but twice, making it one of Germany’s top breweries and beer tours! Here you can experience a lot, from beer tastings to beer seminars and even a museum where you can learn everything about the process and production. There are delicious German home cooking options in a rustic brewery atmosphere at the restaurant. Here you can satisfy your hunger.

In the town of  Jever,  you will find yourself a brewery, funnily enough, called ‘The Jever.’ The Jever beer is one of the most famous beers from the North. You can see it in the size of the brewery! Here you can find out everything there is to know about Jever beer on a brewery tour. The pilsner is the most popular beer here. However, there are also many special flavors, such as blood orange and lemon.

Hamburg is famous for bad weather and Holsten beer. So, the Holsten Brewery is a must-visit if you do a brewery tour in the North. The first Holsten was brewed here in Hamburg as early as 1879. This is one of the beer tours in Germany with an extensive history. Every year there is the brewery festival held here during the summer. You can play games, taste delicious food, listen to music, and drink a lot of beer.

We continue to  Flensburg . This brewery, you guessed it, produces Flensburg beer. There are 16 different types of beer (if you count the non-alcoholic ones) that you can try. During the “Brewmaster Evenings,” you will learn about the brewing process in a small group of a maximum of 6 people. You will be able to help and, of course, get the chance to try a variety of beers. You can also buy quirky things related to Flens beer in the shop next door.

But what makes brewery and beer tours in Germany really special is the people you experience them with. A group of like-minded people should enjoy a delicious beer together. Nobody in your circle of friends has the desire or time. Then stop by JoinMyTrip and find travel partners  who love beer as much as you do.

Brewery Tour in the East

A sign on the top of a roof saying BEER!

If a beer tour in eastern Germany is an option for you, you must head to  Dresden . Dresden is only 20 minutes from the suburb, Radeberg, where the Radeberger beer is brewed. This brewery, however, only brews Pilsner beer. But it has such a good reputation that even a bar in New York only sells Radeberger!

You can take a tapping course in the brewery to learn how to tap a Radeberger perfectly. Afterward, there is time for tasting and yummy snacks . The great thing is that there is a bus tour from Dresden. The bus tour takes you from the city center directly to the brewery. This means you can happily enjoy one of Germany’s best beer breweries and tours whilst drinking away without worrying about transportation.

We continue to Saxony Anhalt, more precisely to  Wernigerode,  as this is the home of the Hasseröder brewery. Hasseröder beer is the best-selling beer in Saxony Anhalt. Therefore it must definitely be on the list of German breweries you should visit. The brewery has been around since 1872. You can find out everything about the pearly Pils on a brewery tour. Be sure to try black beer, which has a very unique taste. The Premium Pils from Hasseröder has received the gold medal award of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) 14 times. And the silver medal nine times! Isn’t this a reason in itself why you should pay a visit to one of the top German breweries?

Our brewery tour ends in the East, in  Leipzig.  Here you will find the Sternburg brewery. This smaller but fine brewery produces one of the five most popular beers in the east, Sternburg. The tour is small and friendly, often carried out by the manager himself. He knows how to entertain his guests. You will never have a boring moment here. The special thing about this brewery is perhaps not necessarily the type of beer brewed here. Rather that it works with the Diakonie am Thornberg. The majority of the employees are impaired for various reasons. But they can still do a normal job in the Sternburg Brewery. This brewery gives a familiar impression, and you will really feel at home. The perfect end to your German brewery and beer tour in eastern Germany.

Pint of a beer standing on a bar side the best beer tour in germany

The Southern beer tour starts in Upper Bavaria, in the small community of  Andechs. The Benedictine monastery situates in this place, where the Andechs monastery beer is brewed. Centuries-old monastery brewery traditions and the latest brewing technology meet here, and the results are truly impressive. The brewery is not just a special place; the monastery itself is spectacular, which you can explore on a guided tour. Have you always wanted to understand how real monks live? Then this is a great opportunity to see this experience, making this German brewery and beer tour unique.

We continue to  Freising,  located here on the Nährberg mountain and is the Weihenstephan brewery. This brewery is especially great if you want to be outside as there is a great beer garden surrounding it, where you can try the freshly brewed beer. This brewery is special as it is the oldest brewery in the world and, therefore, a must-see for every real beer lover. There are 15 different varieties you can try out, and the atmosphere is just another reason this is one of the best breweries and beer tours in Germany. The whole thing is as Bavarian as it gets, including the waiters and waitresses dressed in traditional costumes.

We believe this day could be your favorite, delicious beer and food in a great beer garden outside on the top of a mountain. Everything your heart desires. Be sure to try the yeast wheat beer!

The last stop in the south is the Paulaner brewery in  Munich . Monks founded the brewery in 1634, making it one of the oldest breweries in the world. With a workforce of 2,496, it is also one of the largest in Germany. Paulaner is popular worldwide, and the brewery invites you to brewery tours every day, visited by many tourists. Here you learn everything about the exact brewing process, and you can also try it from time to time.

The tour begins with a glass of home-brewed schnapps in the brewhouse so you can really get in the mood. Next up, there is a film lecture in which the beer production is well explained, followed by a tour of the individual stages the beer goes through. The South of Germany is renowned worldwide for its beer, and the Paulaner is definitely one of them.

Brewery Tour in the West

a glass of full beer on a table best beer tours in Germany

If you are a real beer lover, you should definitely head over to  Dortmund, as there is not only one brewery you can visit but also eight. Among other things, the Dortmunder Kronen Bier, Brinkhoffs, and Ritter beers are being brewed here. Since the late Middle Ages, the city was given the right to brew, and they haven’t stopped. Over 7.5 million hectoliters are produced here annually, and only one other city in the USA exceeds this. You can take part in one of the tours of all breweries, but if you can’t decide, visit the Brewery Museum. Because everything you need to know about how to brew a beer is there for you to learn. Don’t worry. There is even a beer tasting in the museum, which you can book.

And off you go to the next destination , the Bönnsch brewery in  Bonn . Here you will get a cold glass of Bönnsch and a delicious sandwich with a homemade spread. Then the tour begins, where you can try the beer and taste it in the various stages of production at each station. Each time try to taste the individual ingredients and figure out if it is hops, malt, or barley. After the tour, you can end the day by eating something delicious in the restaurant. This brewery is located in the heart of Bonn and has a great family atmosphere, making it a worthwhile visit.

Now we have come to the end of our brewery tour in the west, where we finish it in Cologne with the Früh brewery, where the Früh Kölsch is brewed. Cologne is a really cool city where you can experience a lot. The special thing about this brewery is not necessarily the tour, but the beer garden, which is located in the middle of the city center. It is located right next to the cathedral and offers a great view of all the hustle and bustle going on in the city. Unlike many other breweries, which are often only visited by tourists, this brewery is very popular with the Cologne residents, whether young or old, businessman or craftsman, family, and friends meet here to enjoy a delicious Kölsch.

Ten Brilliant European Brewery Tours

Hotel search website with over 1,000,000 hotels

Oktoberfest is currently in full-swing, with hordes of people donning their lederhosen and dirndls and flocking to Munich to celebrate its 205th year. From centuries-old traditional breweries to modern, multimedia "experiences", we have selected ten of the best brewery tours around Europe in honour of this world-famous folk festival's dedication to beer.

1)Harveys Brewery - Lewes, UK

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Andrew M Butler, Flickr)

Harveys Brewery is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex and earlier this month was named 'Brewery of the Year' in the 2016 Good Pub Guide. Still in the Harvey family after eight generations, the history of the brewery dates back to 1790. Its impressive Victorian Gothic tower is a Lewes landmark which has been adapted over the past 150 years to house a modern brewing plant whilst still producing ale made with locally-sourced ingredients. Harveys remains true to its traditions and continues to deliver much of its beer by horse-drawn dray cart. Due to its endearing popularity there is a two-year waiting list for brewery tours, which are conducted by a member of the Brewing Room.

2)Heineken Experience - Amsterdam, Netherlands

best beer tours in europe

(Source: J. Griffin Stewart, Flickr)

Established in Amsterdam in 1864, Heineken is one of the three largest beer producers in the world. Though the original brewery closed in 1988, it lives on as the Heineken Experience , featuring a museum and several hands-on attractions. Visitors learn the history of the Heineken family and the architecture of the 19th century brewery buildings, as well as the chance to view the impressive brass beer tanks and visit the old horse stables. There are also screenings of historical beer commercials and even the chance for tour-goers to make their own music video. The Experience's crowning glory is a multimedia exhibit where visitors 'become' a beer and get subjected to heat, shaken up and sprayed with water!

3)Guinness Storehouse - Dublin, Ireland

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Jeff, Flickr)

Founded by Arthur Guinness in 1759, St James's Gate Brewery stretches across 26 hectares and produces 2.5 million pints of stout every day. The only part of the site open to the public is the Guinness Storehouse , which rises seven impressive storeys high around a stunning central atrium and is shaped like an incredibly large pint glass. One of Ireland's leading attractions and a veritable cathedral for lovers of the black gold, visitors learn much about the history and making of the humble stout pint through interesting presentations and interactive exhibitions. The tour ends in the top floor Gravity Bar where visitors have an opportunity to sip "the best pint of Guinness in the world", whilst taking in magnificent panoramic views of Dublin.

4)Erdinger Brewery - Erding, Germany

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Martin Strattner, Flickr)

Given Oktoberfest is underway, it would be remiss not to include a Bavarian brewery on this list. Family-run Erdinger Brewery , based just outside of Munich in the small Ducal town of Erding, is the world's largest wheat beer brewery and marries traditional recipes with state-of-the-art technology. The town's brewing heritage dates back to the 16th century, and since 1886 the site has been the headquarters of Erdinger Weissbräu. Educational and entertaining, this three-hour tour gives visitors a complete insight into how Erdinger Weissbier is brewed and bottled and of course includes tasting opportunities at the end.

5)Stella Artois Brewery - Leuven, Belgium

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Max Mayorov, Flickr)

Stella Artois has been brewed in the Belgian city of Leuven since 1366. Recognising that some people prefer to drink beer rather than learning every detail about how it is made, the brewery offers different tours for different levels of interest. The Stella Artois Classic Tour takes visitors from the brewing hall, through the fermentation process to the filling lines. After the tour, tour-goers hit the brewery's Den Thuis bar. The Stella Artois Beer Tour is far more in-depth, taking visitors through the different steps of the brewing process followed by a beer sampling session in the bar. The Stella Artois Draught Tour also shows the various stages of the brewing process, and is followed by a draught course.

6)Budweiser Budvar Brewery - České Budějovice, Czech Republic

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Navin75, Flickr)

The Budweiser Budvar Brewery began producing beer in 1895. This tour offers an entertaining and engaging introduction to the process of beermaking, encompassing stops at the malthouse, fermenting cellars and the bottling plant, as well as a Gothic Renaissance-style cabin, which features an exhibition on medieval brewing. The tour concludes with a 3D film about beer. Visitors can quench their thirst with one of the eight varieties of Budvar beer and enjoy an excellent dining experience at the renowned Masné krámy restaurant.

7)Visit Carlsberg - Copenhagen, Denmark

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Mark Jensen, Flickr)

The Old Carlsberg Brewery from 1847 has been converted into a modern tourist attraction. Visitors to Visit Carlsberg will experience a packed tour featuring a series of unique displays and interactive exhibitions, the working Jacobsen brewery, the world's largest collection of beer bottles, horses and stables, art and architecture. The tour ends in the bar located on the first floor of the brewery, where tourists are free to sample some of the beer with a view of the brewery's classic copper vessels. Throughout autumn, Visit Carlsberg has a number of Halloween-inspired activities for families, including a treasure hunt in their basement.

8)Maison Leffe - Dinant, Belgium

best beer tours in europe

(Source: OliBac, Flickr)

For almost eight centuries Leffe has been brewed in Dinant, and tour-goers will learn about the craftsmanship behind its beer-making through interactive experiences, touchscreens and tasting. The tour leads visitors through the corridors of an ancient monastery, which has today been converted into a four-star hotel, and offers impressive views of the Meuse valley. Foodies have the chance to indulge in beer food pairing, which combines some of Leffe's nine varieties alongside a selection of meats and cheeses. At the very reasonable adult tour price of €7 (kids go free), guests to Maison Leffe also receive a free gift.

9)Fuller's Griffin Brewery - Chiswick, UK

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Christopher Bulle, Flickr)

Standing on the banks of the River Thames, Fuller's Griffin Brewery stands proudly as London's last remaining family brewery, and dates back to 1828. Its flagship beer is the malty London Pride, the UK's best-selling cask-conditioned ale, which has been brewed on the site since the 1950s. On an average day, 640 barrels of beer are produced and visitors are guided through the industrial process. Two tours are on offer: the £12 tasting tour and the £8 non-tasting tour, with both offering a fascinating glimpse into British beer-making history.

10)Beck's Brewery - Bremen, Germany

best beer tours in europe

(Source: Phil, Flickr)

Beck's is the world's best-selling German beer, and is brewed on the banks of the River Weser in the northern city of Bremen. Two-hour tours of the brewery are run in conjunction with the tourist office, and these provide a wealth of fascinating information about its history and the art of beer brewing. Visitors get to experience the museum, the ingredients store and brewhouse, as well as getting up close to the malt silos and fermentation tanks. Following the tour, a beer-tasting session takes place in the guest room, with the opportunity to drink three glasses of Beck's and Haake-Beck beer.

The 15 Most Important Craft Breweries in Europe

Plus, the beers to seek out from each place.

Where once American beer drinkers looked to Belgium for craft brews, today, America leads the world in craft beer, with the largest number of diverse breweries than any other country in the world. Over the past few decades, however, a handful of breweries have led the way toward building, reviving, shocking, and expanding the European craft beer scene. These European breweries have broken from Old World traditions and stepped up to the plate, thanks to skill and passion, quality and flavor, popularity and influence towards positive change.

If you're already familiar with the most important craft beer in America , then you had better familiarize yourself with some of Europe's top brewers. Large and small, modern and traditional, from the sunny Mediterranean all the way up to the Arctic Circle, they can be found anywhere, and there seems to be no slowing down the train of excellent craft beer offerings popping up all over Europe. Here, in no particular order, are 15 pioneering craft brewers in Europe that any serious craft beer fan should know.

Brewdog — Scotland

BrewDog is one of the largest craft breweries in Europe, with a history of edgy, fearless marketing, surrounded around its punk ethos. Having only started in 2007, the brewery's achievements so far are beyond impressive. Many of you may know of the two founders, James Watt and Martin Dickie, from the BrewDogs series on the Esquire Network.

Today, BrewDog has breweries in Scotland and the U.S., and a new $30 million site planned in Brisbane, Australia. The company also owns bars all over the world, and dozens of sites in UK cities alone.

The company has been named the UK's fastest growing food and beverage company several years in a row, and has amassed a huge global following through its crowd-funding movement, Equity for Punks . While the company remains "craft," 2017 saw TSG Consumer Partners acquire a 22 percent stake in the company, to allow for further growth.

The company's flagship, global best-seller is the Punk IPA , a gorgeous brew bursting with C-hop aromas. Try the 5 AM Red Ale for a twist on the classic red.

Mikkeller – Denmark

Intense barley wines and imperial stouts, modern art, and exclusivity define one of Denmark's most-loved brewers. Headed by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, Mikkeller was founded in 2006, operating as a nomad brewing company.

Just over a decade has passed, and today, the company's beer is distributed to countries all over the world, and served in world-class establishments, like Noma. With bars all around Europe, and locations in Japan, South Korea, Bangkok, and San Francisco, the brand has truly gone global.

Looking to make a mark in the U.S., Mikkeller has established a brewery in San Diego, in Alesmith's previous site, and just opened an outpost at Citi Field in NYC.

Try Mikkeller's multiple award-winning Beer Geek Brunch Weasel Imperial stout, which is brewed with civet coffee. If you're a lover of sour brews, the Mikkeller Spontan series will hit the spot.

Omnipollo – Sweden

The founders of this Swedish brewery travel all around the world, brewing beers in different facilities, and in collaboration with other breweries.

Founded in 2011, the company now boasts a global, cult-like following with fans queuing for hours to get a taste of their most recent release.

The most unique point, however, lies in the breweries new approach to flavor, which sees the addition of unexpected ingredients, like maple syrup, Marshmallow Fluff and strawberries. In Japan, the U.S., and Europe, Omnipollo has brought about a change in craft beer, with tasting notes beyond the norm. What's so attractive about their beer? Well, here are a few of their releases, and these aren't just the names. The flavors stated are in there.

Strawberry Milkshake IPA , Original Blueberry Slab Cake Ice Cream , Yellow Belly Peanut Butter Biscuit Imperial Stout , Maja Maple Muffin Barleywine . Need we say more?

Cloudwater Brew Co – England

Cloudwater brewery launched in Central Manchester in 2014 with an aim of creating tasty, seasonal craft beer. Then the craze began.

The brewery started racking up awards. Last year, it became the first UK brewery to enter RateBeer's list of the top 10 breweries in the world , coming in at fifth place. Again in 2018, the brewery has shocked the craft beer world. The annual awards have named Cloudwater the second best brewery in the world, just under the world-renowned Hill Farmstead brewery in Vermont.

While the awards aren't definitive, Cloudwater is helping beer culture change in the UK, by putting quality, flavor, and seasonal batches at the forefront. The awards merely help people see what can be achieved by putting quality and skill first.

Personally, I'll try anything from Cloudwater, but their IPAs are out of this world . As their beers are seasonal, you'll have to pick from what's available at the time.

Lervig Aktiebryggeri – Norway

In Stavanger, Norway's third largest city, stands the famous Lervig Aktiebryggeri. Founded in 2003, the brewery first focused primarily on pilsners.

In 2010, however, in a movement towards "craft," the brewery hired Mike Murphy as the head brewer. In the years prior, Murphy had worked on beers by Mikkeller, acted as head brewer for Italian brewery, Bierra Del Borgo, and collaborated with many of the best breweries and brewers in Europe.

His move to Lervig brought around a new chapter for the company, as hoppy IPAs and intense imperial stouts quickly became their most popular beers.

Norwegian craft beer has come to be defined by the brewery. In 2017, 16.8 percent of beer exported out of Norway was from Lervig. Amidst the growth, Lervig has announced a gorgeous, new brewing facility and visitor's center in a more central area of Stavanger, created in collaboration with Danish architecture firm, Cobe.

Try the Lucky Jack Pale Ale for a taste of the beer that changed Lervig's image back in 2010. For dark beer lovers, try their world-renowned Konrads Stout .

Cantillon – Belgium

Founded back 1900, Cantillon is one of the few surviving traditional Belgium breweries in the country specializing in lambic and gueuze beers.

The brewery was once one of many traditional sites in Brussels, but is the only one to prosper and grow throughout the years, up to present day. Much of the equipment used in production hasn't been changed in over 100 years.

Climate change has started to impact the brewery's ability to create their signature, open-fermented sours, but nonetheless, Cantillon is known throughout the world for making some of the very best sour beer in existence. The site also features a museum dedicated to the history of the gueuze style.

Try the timeless Cantillon Gueuze or the Cantillon Kriek-Lambic for a raw, traditional experience of the style.

Brouwerij De Molen – Netherlands

In Bodegraven in the Netherlands, the picturesque Brouwerij De Molen brewery has been in operation since 2004.

The brewery has seen huge success since it started, with its beer considered some of the best-crafted in Europe. It also situates a position in the RateBeer world's best breweries list. In the statement the company released in 2016, the brewery founders define De Molen by the following points:

1. No concessions to taste, balance or ingredients.

2. Always keep experimenting and innovating.

3. Collaboration and sharing knowledge with other leading craft‐beer brewers.

4. Trying to be an ambassador to the craft‐beer scene, which in our opinion means

quality and diversity above all else.

Rules to live by. Have a taste of the De Molen Amarillo Imperial IPA , trust us on this one.

Magic Rock Brewing – England

Known for the fun little creatures showcased in their labels, Magic Rock has been a driving force in the UK's booming craft beer scene. Founded in Huddersfield in 2011, the company has been growing ever since.

In 2015 amidst skyrocketing demand, brewing was moved to a larger site, which greatly increased capacity. Magic Rock beer is now shipped all over the world, and the company is seen as one of the "larger" craft breweries in the United Kingdom. Magic Rock is a huge advocate of quality, and has been one the pioneers in the UK craft beer scene to relentlessly pursue authenticity and craft.

Along with any exciting seasonal beers, be sure to try their High Wire Grapefruit pale ale .

Stone Brewing Berlin – Germany

While, of course, Stone Brewing was founded in San Diego, their new Berlin site deserves a place on the list. As one of the largest craft breweries in the U.S., Stone Brewing is currently in a battle with MillerCoors over the theft of their trademark "Stone" brand.

This expansion into Europe was a smart move, as Stone looks to make its mark on Europe, with freshly brewed beer. Much like the gorgeous brewery and restaurant in San Diego, the $25 million site in Berlin is spectacular, with glass separating the production area, high ceilings, natural surroundings, and lots and lots of amazing beer and food.

Try something from the exciting Stone Berlin Pilot Series, the fruit IPAs are amazing!

Beavertown – England

Beavertown is a brewery in London, helmed by Logan Plant, the son of Led Zeppelin frontman, Robert Plant. Logan, however, has taken a very different, hoppy career path to his rock-star father.

Beavertown is a huge part of London's vibrant craft beer scene. Colorful, futuristic artwork, tasty beer, and exciting collaborations with breweries like Other Half, DogFish Head, and Modern Times, Beavertown spreads color, friendship, and flavor across the globe.

They host the huge Beavertown Extravaganza event in London, a must for craft beer lovers. For a first taste try their flagship Gamma Ray Pale Ale and their decadent Black Betty Black IPA .

Brasserie De La Senne – Belgium

Brasserie de la Senne started up in 2010, with the aim to push and enforce Belgium's renowned brewing traditions.

Founders Yvan Debaets and Bernard Leboucq started creating modern craft beer back in 2004, in a village outside of Brussels. Years later, they moved to a new site, where they have since been creating unfiltered, unpasteurized beer using only natural ingredients.

Many suggest De La Senne was responsible for bringing modern beer to Belgium's beer scene, and turning it towards craft by perfectly bringing tradition and innovation together. Keeping things small, the brewery sells its beer in Brussels and around Belgium.

Along with any exciting seasonal brews, make sure to try the core Black IPA, Brusseleir.

Tiny Rebel – Wales

Tiny Rebel is one of the most successful and fastest growing Welsh distilleries, having amassed numerous awards both domestically and globally since its inception in 2012.

After moving to new facility in 2016 to meet demand, the brewery now ships to over 35 coutnries, and has plans to enter the U.S. market. The company has even developed its own video game , alongside Tiny Rebel Games, another company in the family.

Welsh craft beer just became a thing. Make sure to try the brewery's Welsh red ale, CWTCH , and Juicy , a gorgeous, fruity golden ale. That being said, all their core range beers are stellar.

To Øl – Denmark

On par with Mikkeller, To Øl is a huge player in Denmark's beer scene.

Founded in 2010 by two friends looking to change the culture of flavorless, commercial beer, the company has been creating amazing expressions ever since. With their BRUS brewpub in Copenhagen, co-owned bars with Mikkeller (Mikkeller & Friends), and exports to over 40 countries worldwide, To Øl is expanding fast.

In 2014 they came in ninth in the RateBeer world's best breweries list. Try an IPA from their amazing Dangerously Close To Stupid range, or their farmhouse wheat, CloudY 9 .

Wild Beer Co. – England

The best way to get craft beer lovers interested in traditional sour beer, is to take a modern approach to the category, and ease them in. This is how Somerset-based Wild Beer Co. was born — through a huge love for wild yeast strains and fermentation.

Since 2012, Wild Beer has grown immensely by using natural ingredients and wild yeast taken from the surrounding area in their beers.

The recent addition of a state-of-the-art canning line and plans for a brand new brewery, which will double capacity, show that Wild Beer is achieving its mission of spreading the glory of unique, sour, and experimental beer far and wide.

Naparbier – Spain

As one of the driving forces in Spain's changing beer scene, Naparbier has been creating delicious since 2009 in the city Pamplona, Navarra. The company's founders had been experimenting with homebrewing 10 years prior to starting the brewery.

While craft beer in Spain isn't as established as other European countries, like the UK, many new breweries have started emerging, and Naparbier is one of the leaders. Demand is growing, as the company's beer is now shipped to the U.S. and many countries around Europe.

As the brewery focuses on freshness, be sure to try their hoppy Insider IPA and Napar Pale Ale .

Ranked: Prague is Europe’s Second-Best Beer Destination

best beer tours in europe

Beer lovers can celebrate the new study by the renowned Danish shipping and logistics company, DFDS. The survey named Prague as Europe’s second-best destination for beer. This annual report was released earlier in April 2024.

According to the DFDS study , Prague scored 83 out of 100 points. Madrid, Spain’s capital topped the ranking with 85 points. Vienna in Austria, Budapest in Hungary, and Thessaloniki in Greece rounded out the top five.

The report involved Europe’s 70 most popular destinations. Additionally, 8,000 bars and pubs, and over 40,000 Google reviews were analyzed. In the survey, four factors were considered. That includes beer quality, price, social media buzz, and the quality and quantity of bars and pubs. A possible score of 100 points based on the four factors was set for each city.

Czechia was represented by both Prague and Brno on the ranking. This cemented the country as a top beer destination in Europe and beyond. Brno was in 13 th place, a tie with Amsterdam. Celebrated beer destinations like Brussels in Belgium and Berlin in Germany were behind Prague. They secured seventh and ninth spots respectively.

Prague’s vibrant beer atmosphere received recognition for the long-standing brewing tradition. The city boasts over 35 breweries. Pilsner Urquell was noted as a global trailblazer for Pilsner recipes.

“When you go to Prague, it’s all about the Pilsner. It’s what all the locals drink, and most places only serve this, which you can get either light or dark,” explained beer expert Differ Shaun Hill, speaking to DFDS.

Prague Scored Highest For Beer Affordability

Among the four factors considered for Prague analysis, the Czech capital scored the highest in beer affordability. Prague was also rated high in social media buzz. This was done by evaluating the average total number of video views from a sample of TikTok videos. The videos were centered on each city’s beer scene.

When it came to beer quality, Prague didn’t appear popular. It scored 65 points. According to the study, Brno received 85 points noting higher quality beer.

Commenting about Prague’s beer scene, DFDS encourages visitors to explore the city’s historic breweries. “It’s served (referring to Pilsner) with a huge head of foam and it’s great. The best place to try it is U Zlatého Tygra (The Golden Tiger),” added Shaun Hill. This location is a traditional Pilsner beer hall offering a unique atmosphere in the heart of old Prague.

Other Prague iconic breweries recognized by the logistics company include the Strahov Monastery Brewery. This 17th-century brewery is nestled in an ancient monastery, near Prague Castle. It prides itself in a restaurant & courtyard.

Another shoutout was for U Fleků. It is the city’s oldest brewery that has survived over five centuries. The historic venue is known for traditional local dishes, beer, and live music. There is also an outdoor seating area that visitors appreciate about the facility.

Prague’s lively beer scene cements its place among global beer destinations. Visitors worldwide keep flocking to its breweries, historic pubs, and more venues. Check out some of the biggest 2024 beer festivals .
