Hobie Beach

Hobie Beach (also known as Windsurfer Beach for its prime windsurfing opportunities) is conveniently located between Brickell, Downtown Miami, and Key Biscayne. Best of all, it’s dog friendly, so feel free to bring along your pup. The skyline views are an added bonus.

South Pointe Beach

Situated at the southernmost tip of Miami Beach is the aptly named South Pointe Beach, which offers panoramic water vistas. Relax on the sand and take a dip in the ocean before strolling along the paved walking trails or pier. The on-site playground and splash park make it a popular pick amongst families, too.

Samson Oceanfront Park

Samson Oceanfront Park is located in nearby Sunny Isles Beach, away from the hustle of Miami proper. This small, family-friendly park offers a pristine public beach where folks can lounge out, play a game of volleyball, or enjoy an oceanfront picnic.

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is home to a mile-long beach near Downtown Miami. Families with little ones can ride an antique carousel or hop aboard a miniature train. Meanwhile, grown-ups can unwind as they take in the sweeping water views from the sand. For an extra sense of privacy, consider renting one of the colorful beachfront cabins .

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park can be found along the tip of Key Biscayne, just minutes from Miami. The scenic stretch of sand here offers a relaxing reprieve from some of the city’s much busier and more popular beaches. Other highlights include fishing, two restaurants, bike rentals, walking trails, lush flora, and a historic 1825 lighthouse that you can climb.

Hollywood Beach

The neighborhood’s namesake beach — located about 40 minutes from Miami — spans 2.5 miles along the Atlantic. Its most notable feature is the palm-lined Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, which is dotted with hotels, restaurants, and bars. What’s more, this beloved beach is perfect for families craving a fun-filled day in the sun.

South Beach

Miami’s South Beach neighborhood is best known for its buzzy nightlife scene and incredible art deco architecture; however, the shoreline here is equally impressive. As one of the city’s most lively beaches, it’s also one of the most crowded, which is why we recommend arriving as early as possible.

North Beach Oceanside Park

tifonimages/Getty Images

Tucked away in North Beach, the aptly named North Beach Oceanside Park feels like somewhat of a hidden gem — for now, at least. Thanks to the wide-open stretch of sand, travelers will have plenty of space to relax and unwind without having to battle it out for beach space.

Bal Harbour Beach

Bal Harbour is best known for its swanky shops and hotels, but you won’t want to miss the mile-long beach, either. In between strolls on the soft sand and dips in the water, head to one of the eateries nearby. Alternatively, pack a pair of sneakers and run down the palm-shaded, oceanfront jogging path.

Surfside Beach

tovfla/Getty Images

The tight-knit neighborhood of Surfside is home to a slew of luxury accommodations , a walkable downtown area, and one mile of beach that runs parallel to Collins Avenue. Despite its small size, it’s chock-full of charm, and it has picture-perfect clear waters.

Haulover Beach

With its soft, sandy shoreline and sparkling blue waters, Haulover Beach spans 1.5 miles between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. There’s also a tennis center, golf course, and dog park. However, keep in mind that some parts of Haulover Beach are clothing-optional (it’s one of Florida’s best-known nude beaches).

Tips For Visiting Crandon Park

Parking can be challenging on summer weekends. Come during the week, when you’re less likely to find crowded conditions.

Sign-up at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center for the summer walk and experience sea turtle hatchlings released into the water.

Book a memorable beach experience with a private 100-square-foot cabana rental with an appointed parking spot and private shower.  You’ll find some of the best pizza and ice cream in Miami here.

Do not bring personal kayaks and paddleboards, as only floatation devices rented at the concession stands provided by tour companies can be launched at this beach.

Location: 6747 Crandon Blvd. Key Biscayne, FL 33149

Best Beaches in Miami

📃 Here Is The List Of The 11 Best Beaches in Miami, FL: A Closer Look

We will look at Miami’s beach spots , which are likely to attract your attention and provide you with wonderful photo ops.

Bal Harbour Beach, Miami

Bal Harbour Beach, serene and understated but stunning, is not far from opulent South Beach. Despite being a public beach, Bal Harbour maintains an impression of exclusivity and privacy.

It is a mile long and bordered by pricey condos and opulent resorts. Dunes, rich vegetation, and walks amid beautiful, well-maintained landscaping all add to the ambiance.

There are no lifeguards or other public amenities on the beach, but you can rent beach equipment from one of the several nearby resorts, including chairs and umbrellas.

There is a concrete jetty where you can always observe persistent fishermen hoping for a catch at the end of the Haulover channel, where the beach starts to curve.

When you’ve had your swimming or tanning, stroll down the beach’s walking or jogging trail. Explore further Florida weekend getaway activities.

Crandon Park Beach, Miami

Crandon Beach, one of the best weekend getaways in Florida, is what people outside of the country picture a Miami beach as being vast, with beautiful white sand and rows of hundreds of palm trees.

Beach volleyball matches are constantly in progress, and there is frequently the fragrance of barbecue emanating from one of the many on-site grills.

For your group, you can rent a cabana, which has beach picnic tables and showers.

Walking along the shore, you can view seagrass beds, mangroves, and other coastal vegetation.

Visit the Crandon Park Nature Center, a park section, to observe some rare fish, unique flora, and wildlife.

Additionally, there is a Family Amusement Center, an Environment Study Area, and the Bear Cut Preserve. More breathtaking Florida beaches to unwind on.

South Pointe Park Beach, Miami

A 17-acre urban park with breathtaking 360-degree ocean views can be found in Miami Beach’s South Beach district.

On one side of the park, there is a sizable, vast expanse of sand, a variety of walking trails, a lovely, sizable grassy space, a small waterpark for children, a dog park, and a kiddie lot.

There are several statues of modern art that you will see as you go through the park. Even the benches and lounges are works of beauty.

You may see big cruise ships skimming by on the beach on their way to distant ports. There is a fishing pier as well.

Hobie Beach, Miami

Hobie Beach, Miami’s primary windsurfing beach, is located as you cross the Rickenbacker Causeway on your approach to the lovely Key Biscayne.

It also goes by the moniker Windsurfer Beach after the well-known neighborhood windsurfing rental store, which has been operating on Hobie Beach for more than 20 years and not only rented out equipment but also offered windsurfing lessons.

You may sign up for a two-hour crash course or group sessions that last all day; the knowledgeable and experienced instructors at Windsurfers will have you feeling at ease in no time.

Miami’s preferred dog beach is Hobie Beach. Dogs can play in the waves to their hearts’ delight because of the gentle current and shallow water. From the beach, there are stunning views of the Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.

Hobie Beach, Miami

A kid-friendly green area with breathtaking views of Fisher Island, the skyline of downtown Miami, and South Beach is situated at the southernmost point of Miami Beach.

Even though there is plenty to do near the beach, South Pointe Park also serves as the starting point for many fun walking trails, fabulous BBQ pits, open-air picnic spots, and an off-leash dog park for pet parents.

When you’re not relaxing beneath soaring palms, stroll down the park’s promenade, go fishing on the 450-foot South Pointe Pier, or, traveling with kids, go to the small splash zone where they’re sure to have fun. View beaches close to Orlando

Lummus Park Beach

You’ve probably seen Lummus Park Beach in many motion pictures; it’s the beach that runs down Ocean Drive in Miami Beach’s Art Deco District and is the center of all the action.

It has excellent white sand, emerald waters, and a lovely stand of majestic palm trees between the road and the sand, making it the busiest of all the Miami Beach beaches.

Unless you are a child, the beach is considerably more famous for people-watching than swimming. There is a tiny playground for youngsters ages two to five.

All the restaurants and bars are right across the street, and there are lovely concrete trails for bicycling and strolling.

Matheson Hammock Park & Beach, Miami

A lovely 630-acre refuge in the middle of the city, Matheson Hammock Park is close to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden just south of Coral Gables.

The park, which has been open since 1930, contains an artificial atoll pool where water is brought in by tides from Biscayne Bay. Children and anyone learning to swim will benefit significantly from the shallow water in the pool.

The beach is a terrific place to relax and enjoy breathtaking sights because it always has gentle breezes. A family picnic would be enjoyable under a coral rock pavilion. A network of natural pathways allows visitors to take a stroll amid the park’s lush vegetation.

Due to its consistently calm waves, the beach is also well-liked for kiteboarding, especially among beginners.

Several amenities exist, including a substantial full-service marina, a store with paddleboards and kayaks, and a sailing and boating school. The original coral stone structure is now a well-known eatery. Florida Vacation Spots

North Shore Park Beach, Miami

The only beach in Miami Beach unencumbered by a wall of skyscrapers and has a reasonably wild city park is North Shore Park Beach.

North Shore Park Beach, which is a little off the main path, goes for a mile along Collins Avenue, and between the avenue and the beach are sizable dunes covered in sea grapes and a small woodland park.

A lifeguard is on duty daily, and the beach is long and level. In addition to a nature trail, jogging route, and cycling trail, there are picnic tables and grills for family outings. At the southern end of the beach, there is a two-block Ocean Terrace.

Haulover Beach, Miami

Clothing is not required! Due to this fact, Haulover Beach receives more than 7,000 visitors daily. It is one of the best nudist beaches in the world, according to polls.

Between the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway, it spans nearly half a mile and features fine white sand, lovely manicured dunes, picnic sites, and open surf.

It is a fantastic swimming and surfing beach. Although only a tiny fraction of the much larger Haulover Park, the beach is where most visitors congregate.

Even though you are not required to be nude to visit the beach, being dressed will likely make you feel worse than others who are skinny dipping.

Virginia Key Beach, Miami

Just after you cross the Rickenbacker Causeway, you will see the historic Virginia Key, where Virginia Key Beach – North is situated.

An 82-acre barrier island, Virginia Key is five miles long, one and a half miles wide, and has a superb sandy beach with uninterrupted views of Biscayne Bay and the ocean that extends for half a mile.

Every day, there is a lifeguard on duty. The Virginia Key Beach Par, which was created to save the island’s delicate flora and fauna as well as historic buildings, includes the beach.

With its vintage carousel, miniature train, shaded pavilions, and attractive walks through the lush foliage, the beach quickly became a favorite destination for families to hang out. A route through a coastal hammock and a nature boardwalk are present.

The bicycle path is more than four kilometers long. The park is a well-liked location for sporting activities and concerts and has some rare plant species found during the removal of the invading exotic plants.

Oleta River State Park

The biggest and, probably, most gorgeous urban park in the entire state of Florida is Oleta River State Park.

The park is accessible to guests throughout the year, is only 30 minutes from downtown Miami, and is the ideal getaway to decompress and unwind during the weekend.

15 miles of thrilling off-road bicycle paths, excellent hiking trails, and outstanding mangrove forests that may be explored by kayak are all available in the Oleta River State Park.

The park invites fishermen and swimmers in addition to the typical mix of cyclists and paddlers since it has just over 1,000 acres of territory to explore. Stop at the Biscayne Bay shoreline for a picnic to end your journey in style at the end of the day.

The Best Beaches in Miami

By Paul Rubio

1 Hotel South Beach Miami Exterior Beach

With a skyscraping downtown, the trendy Wynwood Arts District , and charming cultural enclaves like Little Havana , Miami’s personalities are many. Yet despite all the exciting design and big-city excess , the city’s number one draw remains its natural, sparkling beaches.

The best beaches in Miami are as singular as the city’s eclectic neighborhoods. Whether your beach goal is utter relaxation, sipping pricey cocktails, playing fetch with your pooch, or tanning in the nude, Miami’s got you covered. From the siren song of South Beach to private beach clubs on Mid-Beach and on to nature and bike trails along Key Biscayne, here are our 18 favorite places to throw down a towel and soak up the sun in South Florida.

Read our complete Miami city guide here .

Bal Harbour Beach, Miami Beach

Along the beachfront of Bal Harbour, Miami’s poshest neighborhood, expect to see plenty of bling and designer bikinis and bathing suits on the sparkling white sands—and don’t even think about wearing the same threads twice! Thankfully choices abound for new beachy purchases and post-swim couture at retail haven Bal Harbour Shops, an open-air mall with the likes of Vilbebrequin, Orlebar Brown, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and The Webster.

Who it’s best for: Those looking to showcase their latest beachwear and enjoy some waterfront pampering

The vibe: Summer in the Hamptons meets Rodeo Drive

Where to stay: Book a room at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort , which charms with its sleek décor and fabulous, full-service 1,000-foot white sand beach—strewn with loungers and daybeds. Note: it’s also possible to access the St. Regis’s pool and beach as a non-guest by renting an Oceanfront Day Villa (think: an air-conditioned, marble-floored cabana on steroids).

South Beach

Beautiful people, flashy cars, skimpy bathing suits, Art Deco architecture: It's all here on the two-mile white sand stretch that makes up Florida’s most famous beach. Within South Beach’s 22-block span, the busiest—and most touristy—section surfaces between 5th and 14th Streets, parallel to the iconic, neon-trimmed Art Deco backdrop of Ocean Drive as well as Lummus Park, home to 18 volleyball courts and two outdoor fitness gyms. Locals tend to hang south of this hoopla, on the quieter patches below Fifth Street. Hotel beach clubs dominate the shoreline from 15th Street to 22nd Street, but rest assured, there’s still plenty of space for anyone to throw down a towel.

Who it's best for: Those who enjoy a busy beach scene with plenty of eye candy

The vibe: “Welcome to Miami, bienvenido a Miami”

Where to stay: For vibe, high design and an upscale “scene,” try either the soothing, nature-inspired 1 Hotel South Beach or the art-forward, all-suite W South Beach .

An aerial view of MidBeach.

Mid-Beach, Miami Beach

A raised boardwalk separates the beach from hotel-lined Collins Avenue between 23rd Street and 46th Street, an area collectively referred to as Mid-Beach. Home to Miami’s most stylish hotels, this area caters to Miami’s style set and well-heeled travelers that consider South Beach passé.

Who it's best for: Fashionistas, trendsetters, and those who like to chill and drink at hotel beach clubs

The vibe: A lounge-y atmosphere that goes from day to night

Where to stay: Check into either the Miami Beach Edition , an Ian Schrager–backed reinvention of the 1955 Seville Hotel or the epicenter of Miami’s daytime social scene, Soho Beach House .

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne

We wouldn't blame you if you took one look at this mile-long, undeveloped beach on the southern tip of Key Biscayne and thought, “I'm just going to nap.” But there’s also an extensive network of trails with superb Miami skyline views worth exploring. No wonder it regularly receives accolades as one of the top beaches in the country.

Who it's best for: Families and couples who enjoy nature and active pursuits

The vibe: Relaxed on the beach, sporty on the trails

What to do: Consider renting a bike from the park's concession and exploring. Peek inside the circa-1845 Cape Florida Lighthouse (South Florida’s oldest) and look to the horizon for a glimpse of Stiltsville, a collection of historic homes that appear to float atop Biscayne Bay.

Sunny Isles Beach

With placid, sapphire water and few crowds, this two-mile swath of Miami Beach is quiet compared to its neighbors. The stretch is lined mainly with residential condos—some low-rises redolent of old Miami, others skyscraping residential showstoppers, a testament to Miami’s growing contemporary edge and massive influx of new money.

Who it’s best for: Families and couples who just want a beautiful beach, minus the party feel

The vibe: Relaxed and ideal for quiet days in the sun

Where to stay: The beauty of Miami’s northernmost beach is underscored by the over-the-top landscape of Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach and its highly coveted beach club, exclusive to hotel guests.

12th Street Beach, South Beach

It's a sea of Speedo-clad, sculpted bods at this predominantly gay beach, which is marked by rainbow flags near the 12th Street lifeguard stations and continues down to 11th Street. Expect dance-heavy playlists erupting from Bluetooth speakers and a slightly buzzed crowd sipping White Claws.

Who it's best for: Those who want to show off their bodies—including topless sunbathers

The vibe: Padam Padam

Where to party: Come nightfall, head to Nathan’s Beach Club , a LGBTQ-favorite video bar reinvented and expanded in summer 2023 to include a dance club as well as a tropical-inspired cocktail bar. Later cross the street to reach Twist, a hedonistic-heavy venue that rages until sunrise. For great food and gender-bending weekend fun, Uber to Wynwood for drag-themed brunch or dinner at all-welcoming restaurant, R House .

The Setai Beach Club at 21st Street, South Beach

South Beach has its fair share of fabulous, over-the-top hotels, but The Setai Miami Beach is quite possibly the most ultra-luxe. Sure, you could take your pick from the three temperature-regulated swimming pools, but why not settle into a lounger on the private, sparkling white beach and enjoy top-notch service from the beach butlers?

Who it's best for: Socialites looking for a true South Beach splurge

The vibe: See-and-be-seen, with a bit of celeb spotting

Where to eat: Enjoy a respite from the sun under the covered terrace of Setai's in-house restaurant, the Ocean Grill. While hotel guests are the only ones privy to the beach club and pools, the Ocean Grill is open to the public and serves both lunch and dinner.

1 Hotel South Beach Miami Exterior Beach

Tala at 1 Hotel South Beach

With a soothing, nature-inspired design, Miami Beach’s largest rooftop swimming pool, and oversized guest rooms (starting at an impressive 700 square feet), 1 Hotel South Beach is a tropical, eco-conscious fantasy come to life. Things get even better by the beach: The hotel lays claim to 600 feet of linear beachfront, where it houses full beachfront services for guests. Slightly further inland and cloaked in native flora, Tala (formerly known as 1 Beach Club) is Miami’s top feet-in-the-sand resto-bar, open to all, serving Mediterranean-inspired shared plates to the soundtracks of live music and DJs. It’s a sunkissed reverie of sprawling daybeds, driftwood furniture, overstuffed pillows and woven textiles planted in the sands among sea grapes, towering palms, and potted succulents.

Who it's best for: Those looking to chill, daydream, and drink in an seductive, outdoor setting (while making everyone on Instagram insanely jealous)

The vibe: Boho-chic

Where to drink: After Tala, head to the rooftop restaurant WATR at the 1 Hotel South Beach for mixology-forward cocktails and prime birds eye views of South and Mid-Beach from 18 floors up.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL AT THE SURF CLUB

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside

Since the 2017 opening of Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club , the mile-wide beach town of Surfside, located south of Bal Harbour, has received some long overdue love for its sparkling waters and pristine beaches. The hotel resurrects the famed beach club that once hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill, and Elizabeth Taylor, building on the legend with newly constructed glass residential and hotel towers. The property’s full-service beach area, solely for hotel guests, is delightfully tranquil and well-manicured and delivers on the Four Seasons hallmarks of service excellence and elevated food and beverage.

Who it's best for: Those craving a new-fashioned take on old-school glamor

The vibe: Mid 20th-century glam meets the Italian coast

Where to eat and drink: Guests and non-guests are welcome to check out the property’s acclaimed restaurants and bars. Delight in authentic Italian gastronomy at Lido Restaurant at the Surf Club or sip bubbles and masterful cocktails at the stunning, palm-fringed interior Champagne Bar. Experience continental cuisine at The Surf Club Restaurant by Thomas Keller (Alternatively, delight in Keller’s award-winning French bistro concept, Bouchon , which opened in September 2023 in Miami’s Coral Gables neighborhood.)

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami, Key Biscayne

A bridge away from the mainland, the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami is a luxe-yet-unpretentious island retreat that’s the antithesis of the Miami Beach scene. Meaning, you can enjoy the 1,200-foot-long golden sand beach here without all the hoopla and expect family-friendly fun and few crowds.

Who it's best for: Families who love long, glorious days of sunshine, alternating between the beach and the resort pool (a very short distance from one another)

The vibe: Sandcastles welcome

Where to eat: While the beach cabanas are restricted to hotel guests only, the hotel's two beachfront restaurants, Dune Burgers on the Beach and Mexican favorite Cantina Beach, are open to the public as well as the more formal Lightkeepers, serving modern coastal fare.

Haulover Naturist Beach, North Beach

In between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach lies this welcoming, clothing-optional beach surrounded by undeveloped parklands. In fact, it is Florida’s oldest officially recognized public nude beach.

Who it's best for: Tan line avoiders, hard-core nudists, and neophytes who dare to bare

The vibe: All shapes, sizes, and sexes are present, and there are a number of unofficial sections: one for families, another for non-families, and even a gay nude beach.

What to bring: Given the nature of the undeveloped beach park, anticipate limited facilities within walking distance. Make sure to pack your own gear, including food and drinks.

Haulover Park Beach Dog Park Miami

Haulover Dog Beach

While the 177-acre Haulover Park may be best known for its naturist beach, there is another stretch within the park’s 1.4 miles of beachfront that’s a guaranteed good time. On the designated Haulover Dog Beach, located between lifeguard houses 2 and 3, four-legged friends can roam off-leash and run, roll, play fetch, and go for a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Also, thanks to the current of the Haulover Inlet, this particular patch sees some of Miami’s more impressive swells, ideal for light surfing and bodyboarding.

Who it's best for: Dog-lovers and beginner surfers

The vibe: Zoomies, splashes, and belly rubs

What to do: Away from the beach but still within Haulover Park, there’s a fenced Bark Park with separate sections for big and small dogs, plus water fountains and waste bags.

A beach.

Sand at W South Beach

Fresh off a $30 million renovation, the design-forward, all-suite W South Beach is a more mature representation of the W brand, with rooms defined by natural oak furnishings, beach house-style millwork, and a mingling of earth tones with pops of coral and teal. At W’s beach club, SAND, get cozy under a salmon-hued umbrella or cabana and prepare to laze the day away, nursing punchitas (a potent mix of spicy tequila, jalapeño, and passion fruit purée) and snacking on health-conscious cuisine. For a more amped up experience, hang at WET (that’s the pool deck in W speak) where DJs spin on weekends. Look forward to the property’s new resort-style programming, which includes several complimentary activities on the beach like sunrise and sunset yoga by Ahana Yoga Studio and wellness activations under the stars.

Who it's best for: The millennial jet set and Marriott Bonvoy loyalists

The vibe: W devotees from decades past, now all grown up (but still looking for a good time)

Where to drink: Keep the drinks flowing on property, outdoors at tiki bar-inspired Irma’s; or inside at W’s Living Room Bar, where you’ll find live entertainment from 9pm until 1am.

An aerial of a beach.

Soho Beach House

Housed within a thoughtfully reinvented 1940s tower in Mid-Beach, Soho Beach House Miami attracts both the local and global style set to delight in the dazzle of its two swimming pools, ocean-facing rooftop and its highly coveted beach club. Both SoHo House members and non-member overnight guests are privy to this full-service swathe, lined with blue-and-white umbrella-capped loungers. However, as the hottest place on the beach and with first-come, first-served policy, the beach reaches capacity quickly (read: Arrive early to avoid disappointment or book an oceanfront daybed in advance.) Once situated, choose from a food menu that includes fresh salads, avocado toast, and wood-fired pizzas and a drink menu with a dozen-plus wines by the glass and bottle plus tasty cocktails like the Luna dorada, a refreshing blend of Rosaluna mezcal, Aperol, grapefruit, lemon, and yuzu marmalade.

Who it's best for: Gen Z spendthrifts and young professionals in the arts and media

The vibe: Endless summer

Where to eat and drink: Grab dinner on-site under the braided lights of Cecconi's, a Northern Italian restaurant serving light tartare decadent pastas, branzino and more.

An aerial of a beach.

South Pointe Beach

South of Fifth Street (known locally as SoFi), away from the throngs of tourists, locals find respite on wide stretches of beach. Down on First Street, South Pointe Beach is particularly popular thanks to minimal development (read: less shadows from high rise hotels) and easy access to the short walking trails and sunset views within adjacent South Pointe Park. The Park, which also features a fishing pier, a playground and play areas for kids, frames the entirety of Miami Beach southern end and is one of the few places to truly grasp the fact that Miami Beach is, in fact, an island.

Who it's best for: Those who want to hang with low-key Miami locals in a thriving tourist town

The vibe: A simple beach day with friends and family

Where to eat: For a lovely waterfront affair, dine alfresco on chilled shellfish and prime cuts at Smith & Wollensky Miami , enjoying prime sunset views along the edge of South Pointe Park. For indoor dining, don’t miss the dazzle of Miami icon, Joe’s Stone Crab , which has been cracking the best claws and serving superlative seafood for over 100 years.

Oleta River State Park

Florida's largest urban park reveals a glimpse of old Miami with a natural mix of tidal mangroves, small islands, and sandbars, all strewn throughout Biscayne Bay. Kayak under a mangrove canopy to reach Sandspur Island and claim your own small stretch of beach under the palm trees. (But beware: You are not alone, and Sandspur’s raccoons are notorious for stealing things.) Alternatively, walk, drive, or paddle to Oleta’s shallow beach cove, a great depth for wading and for young children to splash around.

Who it's best for: Kayakers, adventure-seekers, and families who want more than an ordinary beach experience

The vibe: Nature buffs finding their niche in Miami’s beach scene

What to do: Within the park, follow the signs to the Outdoor Center to rent your own kayak or sign up for a group tour.

Nikki Beach, South Beach

This famed beach club has been popping bottles on South Beach since 1998, when it ruled the Miami party scene and hosted big names like Madonna and Leonardo DiCaprio for epic nights of partying. But as South Beach matured beyond its wild nightlife persona, Nikki Beach did, too. So nowadays (and until Nikki’s lease ends in 2026), the club plays out as a fabulous daytime affair focused on the luxe beach lifestyle and the joie de vivre found therein. Rent a daybed or reserve a table for a toes-in-the-sand afternoon filled with plenty of Champagne, rosé, sushi boats, house music, and incredible people watching.

Who it's best for: Friends and couples with a penchant for day-drinking

The vibe: Miami flash with some St. Tropez panache

What to do: Drink, dance, repeat

A beach.

Miami Beach EDITION, Mid-Beach

Ian Schrager’s dreamy reinvention of the 1955 Seville Hotel, the Miami Beach Edition , features an Old Havana–inspired palm-fringed lobby with high ceilings, a duo of slick pools (one modern, one historic) and, of course, a sparkling beach, in all its wide, white sand glory. With perfectly aligned rows of sapphire and white chairs and umbrellas, the beach here is one of the city’s most photogenic. A colorful retro-glam inspired fantasy continues past the boardwalk and into the hotel’s outdoor sandpit where hammocks, bean bags, and a ping pong table await. Adjacent, the mid-century modern Tropicale restaurant serves light lunch and cocktails around the reimagined circa 1955 diving pool.

Who it's best for: Those seeking the Miami good life and hospitality buffs

The vibe: Retro-glam-spiked fun-in-the-sun

Where to eat: Treat yourself to memorable evening meal on-property at Latin-forward Matador Room by Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, where a recent dinner included sweet pea guacamole, a maitake mushroom and goat cheese salad with Fresno pepper vinaigrette and charred octopus in a smoked paprika rub.

The 15 Best Beaches in Miami

beaches to visit in miami florida

Miami, Florida, is practically synonymous with paradise, and this warm-weather town has plenty of beach options for all tastes and pleasures. The iconic South Beach with its spring break crowds is the most well-known, but don't assume that all of Miami's beaches revolve around day drinking and partying. There are miles of coastline around South Florida to enjoy, including beaches that cater to families with kids, snorkelers, naturists, water sports enthusiasts, and pretty much every other type of beachgoer. You'll find plenty of lists that tell you which beach in Miami is the best one to visit but in reality, the best one to visit depends on you.

Watch Now: 7 Must-Visit Best Beaches in Miami

South pointe beach.

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

The South Pointe Beach and Park Pier sit within a 17-acre park at the southern tip of Miami Beach. For the anglers, the fishing pier includes a cutting and washing station sd well as collection bins to recycle used fishing line. Plenty of greenery, a wide beach, designated picnic areas, and a playground with water-features makes this a good destination with the kids. A postcard-worthy view of the downtown Miami skyline make it a favorite vantage point of professional and amateur photographers alike.

South Beach

TripSavvy / Kristjan Veski

Considered the quintessential Miami Beach experience, South Beach definitely lives up to the hype. Come here to see and be seen, and continue the beach party into the night at the famous  Ocean Drive nightclubs  just across the street. A favorite of the jet set, South Beach celebrity sightings occur with exciting frequency. The iconic Art Deco architecture and painted lifeguard stands make it impossible to mistake your location from the sand or water.

Lummus Park Beach

At funky Lummus Park Beach, which stretches from 5th Street to 15th Street, pretty much anything goes. You can find topless sunbathers, a notable number of birds (and plenty of people happy to feed them), and an LGBTQ+ vibe around 12th Street. Thatched huts provide shade and pickup volleyball games occasionally get raucous. A paved pathway makes a great route for walking, jogging, or inline skating. You can also use the free public restrooms here, which are hard to come by in Miami Beach.

TripSavvy / Kristjan Veski

The central section of Miami Beach, mapped as Mid-Beach, begins around 21st Street and extends north to the neighborhood of the famous Fontainebleau Hotel. Head here for quiet beaches and the best examples of Miami Modern architecture. The area experienced a resurgence beginning in 2013, capped by the opening of the Faena Hotel in 2016. It's still considerably more relaxed than South Beach if you're seeking tranquility, but still close enough for a day trip or night outing if you want to experience the crazy South Beach scene.

North Beach

franckreporter / Getty Images

Extending from around 63rd Street north along Collins Avenue, North Beach swaps the kitschy fun of South Beach for the laid-back air of classic Miami Beach. More suburban strip mall than tourist trap, the neighborhoods fronting the roughly 12-mile stretch of sand house a largely Latino population. As expected, a slew of reasonably priced restaurants serves homey Cuban, Mexican, Brazilian, and Salvadorean food. You can also find Thai, Italian, French, Indian, and nearly every other ethnic cuisine here.

You can find a small-town vibe in Miami if you just head to Surfside, a residential community with a mile-long strip of beach. This mostly-locals gathering spot often thrums with beach bashes that don't have the same "spring break" vibe as the parties on South Beach. The quiet stretch of sand, devoid of any intrusive commercial activity, makes a natural sunrise-viewing location. Paddle-boarders and kite surfers come here for the uncrowded waves.

Bal Harbour

TripSavvy / Jamie Ditaranto

Head to Bal Harbour for the luxury resort lifestyle in Miami Beach. You can check into the St. Regis, the Ritz-Carlton, or the Sea View for the fully pampered experience, or simply claim a patch of sand on the public beach as your own for a day. Resort staff provides a lengthy list of services, including lounge chairs and cabanas, watersports rentals, and even sunscreen spritzes, but you must be a guest of the resort to use them.

Haulover Beach

Haulover Beach, located on Miami Beach between Sunny Isles Beach and Bal Harbour, earned renown as Miami’s only legal "clothing optional" beach. Anyone skittish about shedding their swimsuit can easily avoid the free-spirited crowd and signs clearly mark the nude beach to prevent surprises. But the dense vegetation that protects the white sand from the intruding image of nearby urban high rises should be its primary draw. It feels the least developed of all of Miami's beaches, making it the perfect place to enjoy a scenic sunset without buildings getting in the way. A dependable supply of nicely formed waves attracts many of the area’s surfers as well.

Sunny Isles Beach

Sunny Isles Beach lost much of the kitschy character that it was known for to luxury condo developments. But the two-mile stretch of sand makes a good destination, if somewhat generic, for an easy-going vacation, with plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops within reach. Access the only public fishing pier in Miami-Dade County, the Newport Fishing Pier, from Collins Avenue where it intersects with Sunny Isles Beach Boulevard. The historic site is the only designated fishing area at Sunny Isles Beach.

Virginia Key Beach

One of South Florida’s more interesting beaches, Virginia Key Beach sits right off the Rickenbacker Causeway (on both the north and south sides) near the Miami Seaquarium. The location makes access easy so some areas become quite crowded, but with a little exploration, you can still find your own quiet spot. This beach allows leashed dogs, one of only a few in the area, making it an especially appealing destination for vacationers missing their own furry friends back home.

Hobie Beach

Hobie Beach appeals mostly to surfers—not surprising since it takes its name from Hobie Alter, a pioneering surfboard maker—and other watersports enthusiasts. You can rent windsurfing equipment, jet skis, and sailboats here, and take lessons on how to use them. This beach also allows dogs and they often outnumber the people. Located off the Rickenbacker Causeway, Hobie Beach also goes by the name Windsurfer Beach and provides grand views of the Miami skyline and free parking.

Crandon Park Beach

Miami parents with young children head to Crandon Park on the north end of Key Biscayne, where shallow water lets the kiddos play in comparative safety. A boardwalk, built-in barbecues, picnic tables, and ample and convenient parking contribute to its popularity with the mini-van set. Often appearing on lists of the nation's top beaches, Crandon Park Beach stretches for 2 miles and concessionaires rent chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and bikes for exploring the 800-acre park.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

At Bill Baggs State Park, located on the south end of Key Biscayne, you can take a guided tour of the famous Cape Florida lighthouse, the oldest building in the southern part of the state. The wide beaches here make sunbathing an enticing pursuit, but antsy visitors find plenty to keep them entertained too, with kayaking, windsurfing, cycling, and fishing from the shore among the options. Check out Boaters Grill , a full-service restaurant, when all of the activity makes you hungry.

Homestead Bayfront Park and Marina

Located in the southern portion of Miami-Dade County about an hour from Downtown Miami , Homestead Bayfront Park lacks the tourist scene of other Miami-area beaches, a welcome point for many residents and vacationers in search of a more tranquil experience. A palm-shaded beach, calm lagoon, and full-service marina makes this a prime destination for both swimmers and boaters. Snorkels tours through the neighboring Biscayne National Park Institute take you 10 miles offshore to explore the vibrant coral reefs.

Oleta River State Park

Oleta River State Park, the largest urban park in Florida, adds the possibility of a rustic beach getaway to the Miami mix. Located bayside at Sunny Isles Beach, the park may be best known for its miles of off-road bicycle trails. Hop into a canoe or kayak to explore the river and the stand of wildlife-rich mangrove forest at the northern end. Relax on the sandy beach along Biscayne Bay which provides a cooling dip in calm waters or head out for a rustic hike . Cabins are available for overnight rentals.

In this guide, we will introduce you to the best beaches in Miami that we have been lucky enough to visit. It is no secret that Miami’s beach scene is special; you can venture out to nearby cities and barrier island getaways to experience even more incredible spots. Table of Contents

1. Virginia Key Beach Park

Best Beaches in Miami Virginia Key Beach Park

Virginia Key Beach Park is a beautiful barrier island park spanning 82.5 acres. The park isn’t just a beach; it spans a network of walking and biking trails, plus picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy refreshments while admiring the scenery. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park feels like it should be one of the  best weekend breaks from Miami .

However, it is just a 12-minute drive from Downtown Miami or 50 minutes on the bus. Virginia Key Beach Park has this beautiful, removed appeal, with shallow waters and coastal flora that is ideal to explore by kayak or paddleboard. It is an oasis of natural beauty with all the convenience of being just a short distance from Downtown Miami. And for this reason, we just had to add it to this guide.

The main beach in Virginia Key Beach Park is Virginia Beach, a peaceful white sand beach with gorgeous views over Miami’s skyline and the Atlantic Ocean. Quiet and scenic, this is easily one of the best Miami beaches for travelers who want to get off the so-called beaten track. It also has a dog park on one of its beaches – a massive hit amongst locals.

2. Hobie Island Beach Park

Best Beaches in Miami Hobie Island Beach Park Rickenbacker Causeway

Also lesser known to tourists, this shallow, watered slither of white sand beach is tucked away next to the Rickenbacker Causeway – deceptively close to Downtown Miami and easily accessed by car or bus. You rent a car and drive to Hobie Island Beach Park in 10 minutes – a dreamily convenient arrangement. For this reason, Hobie Island Beach Park is one of the most popular local beaches in Miami. And with a sizeable dog-friendly area, it is a massive hit amongst local Miami dog owners.

For tourists, a visit to Hobie Island Beach Park is ideal as it is quieter than the major beaches in Miami. It also has stunning views of the Downtown Miami skyline and water sports equipment rentals if you want to make the most of shallow waters. The waters at Hobie Island are perfect for trying stand-up paddle boarding. The mixture of skyline views and local crowds make it an excellent recommendation as a peaceful spot.

To get to Cape Florida Beach, it is just a 30-minute drive from Miami’s Downtown. Alternatively, you can catch a bus and reach the beach in approximately an hour and 20 minutes.

  • Where to stay: The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne

4. Sandy Beach at Oleta River State Park

Best Beaches in Miami Sandy Beach at Oleta River State Park

Sandy Beach at Oleta River State Park is a beautiful section of shoreline with hardly any waves. It is situated in the boundaries of Oleta River State Park’s stunning 1043 acres and on the Intracoastal Waterway, shielded from waves and winds by the barrier islands off Miami’s coastline. The beach is popular amongst families and local people in Miami, and it quickly gets busy at peak times and during holidays. Sandy Beach is perfect if you want a beach that isn’t located on the barrier islands.

Oleta River State Park is the largest urban park in Florida and a great place to explore and combine with a morning on the beach. The park has miles of walking and biking trails, plus access to the 1,515-mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. The best way to reach the park is by car, and you can drive there from Miami’s Downtown in just over 30 minutes.

  • Where to stay: Best Western Plus North Miami-Bal Harbour

5. Surfside Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is a pretty white sand beach to the north of central Miami in the city’s uptown region. The neighborhood of Surfside is just a mile long, and it is renowned for its Jewish cuisine and small-town culture and atmosphere – a sharp contrast to South Beach and busy Downtown Miami. Its beach is much the same, with a quiet, community vibe ideal for travelers wanting to experience a less intense version of Miami.

There’s plenty of nearby green space, including North Beach Oceanside Park. And there’s the Surfside Walking Path, a beautiful walk to appreciate the quiet scenery and water views. It is easy to see why Surfside Beach made our list. It is a little community haven of a beach.

To reach Surfside, it is an approximate 30-minute drive from Miami or just over an hour on public transport. It is more convenient to stay near Miami Beach, taking just 20 minutes by car or 30 minutes on a single bus.

  • Where to stay: Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club

The soft sand is the perfect place to sunbathe before heading out for a nice meal or cocktail. And, of course, there’s access to the Miami Beach Boardwalk.

7. Dr Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park

Best Beaches in Miami Dr Von D Mizell Eula Johnson State Park

However, it has earned its spot on this list as one of the honorary Miami beaches thanks to its pristine waters and coastal reserve. It is approximately a 40-minute drive from central Miami, and it is located just under Fort Lauderdale .

However, it is one of the greatest nearby beaches to visit. Dr. Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park is home to sea turtles and even manatees in its neighboring canal. If you want a beach experience with reserve-style wildlife, it is  the  place to go from Miami.

Best Beaches in Miami Crandon Park Beach

Crandon Park Beach is beautiful – as in seriously beautiful. This white sand beach is one of the most quiet stretches of shoreline you can find in Miami. This quality makes it one of the best beaches in Miami and an easy addition to this guide. The mixture of soft sand and a peaceful location on Key Biscayne make Crandon Beach a paradise on Earth, let alone just Florida. It has a sought-after residential appeal and is also less known amongst tourists, making it a quiet option that only gets busier in peak seasons.

Crandon Beach is closest to Miami’s Downtown and is just under 20 minutes away by car or an hour by bus. You’ll be crossing the William M Powell Bridge and passing beautiful viewpoints of the Miami skyline and the beautiful Virginia Key – so take your time and allow a whole day to enjoy Crandon Beach despite its convenient location.

Best things to do in Miami Beach

Art Deco Historic District

1.  Art Deco Historic District

  • Things to do

Ice cream cone pastels, geometric lines and curves, chrome accents and decorative fountains are just a few characteristics that distinguish the iconic buildings of Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District. Miami has the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world, and their preservation has saved the South Beach skyline from becoming a canyon of condos. Amazingly, these buildings were nearly destroyed by developers in the early 1970s. Today, a number of the best Miami hotels , and even some South Beach clubs , have maintained their beautiful façades and historical designation.

The Bass

2.  The Bass

  • Cultural centers
  • South Beach

The centerpiece of Collins Park’s cultural campus (which includes the adjacent Miami City Ballet), this recently enhanced and enlarged contemporary art museum includes more exhibition space, four new galleries, a gift shop, café by Thierry Isambert and a new educational facility called the Creativity Center. With the revamp also came a series of fresh acquisitions and gifts from New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

South Pointe Park

3.  South Pointe Park

  • South of Fifth

South Pointe Park occupies the southernmost tip of Miami Beach. There's beach access (with a great view of massive cruise ships rolling in and out of Miami), a walkable pier and also some green space to spread a blanket and chill out. If you can wake up early enough (or stay awake late enough), the sunrises from this vantage point are seriously out of this world.

Española Way

4.  Española Way

This classic Spanish street functions as an elegant, picturesque cousin to nearby Lincoln Road, replete with Mediterranean flair and adorable sidewalk cafes. Following an ambitious restoration project, which completely replaced the street's existing pavement and sidewalk, Española Way has been restored to its original grandeur as a true pedestrian-only strip. You won't find big-box stores nor large hotels, just quaint small shops and cozy, bilevel hotels that whisk you away to far-flung places.

Stubborn Seed

5.  Stubborn Seed

  • Restaurants
  • American creative
  • price 4 of 4

The Top Chef -winning toque wows the city's foodies with his creativity and meticulousness. Stubborn Seed—which received a Michelin star in 2022 —is Ford’s first solo restaurant, and he’s every bit the fixated parent fussing over his new baby—in a good way. The tasting menu (courses and pricing vary depending on the season) is a sign of a chef who’s poured over every detail of the culinary experience.

Miami Beach Bandshell

6.  Miami Beach Bandshell

  • Event spaces
  • North Beach
  • price 1 of 4

This open-air music venue with a proscenium stage and bench seating is where you’ll catch Miami’s most eclectic bookings—think rare world music acts and Latin jazz brought to you by venue managers Rhythm Foundation. With string lights and an ocean breeze above, this place is Miami’s most charming little music venue.

Broken Shaker

7.  Broken Shaker

  • Cocktail bars
  • Miami Beach
  • price 3 of 4

This indoor/outdoor watering hole sums up the city’s drinking culture down to its poolside seating and shareable punch bowls, which change seasonally. Not sure what to sip? Close your eyes and point to the menu. Everything is good. The pool is also open to customers, so feel free to grab a drink and take a dip.

Joe's Stone Crab

8.  Joe's Stone Crab

South Florida’s most famous restaurant turned 100 in 2013 and is as much a Miami must-see as Ocean Drive. The best time to visit is October through May, when the seasonal stone crabs are served with a “secret” sauce, garlic creamed spinach, fried sweet potatoes, coleslaw and hash browns. Joe’s takes limited reservations, so be prepared for a horrendously long wait. Or head straight to Joe’s Take Away next door, where you get the same fresh claws at the same price without the long lines.

Lummus Park

9.  Lummus Park

This sprawling 74-acre park with a beachfront path takes you through some of South Beach's most recognizable territory: along classic Ocean Drive architecture (hello, Versace Mansion), past muscle hunks doing pull-ups on the sand and right up to some prime ocean views. Rent bikes or skates to best take it all in with the ocean breeze in your hair. Lummus Park is also home to a number of major annual events including the Hyundai Air & Sea Show and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival.

Basement

10.  Basement

While most activities in this city require driving, Basement solves your transportation woes by grouping your favorite nighttime activities (and even some daytime things) into one super fun location. The underground space offers bowling under neon lighting and indoor ice skating, plus features a full bar and a dance floor.

Lincoln Road Mall

11.  Lincoln Road Mall

  • Shopping centers

The Lincoln Road Mall—or, in local shorthand, "Lincoln Road"—had its heyday in the 1950s, when it was designed by iconic architectural guru Morris Lapidus and dubbed the "Fifth Avenue of the South." Gussied up in 1997 with a $16-million facelift, the mall sits between 16th and 17th Streets and stretches from Washington Avenue to Alton Road. Sundays are popular for the Lincoln Road Antiques and Farmers' Market .

Haulover Park

12.  Haulover Park

  • Play spaces

This 99-acre waterfront green space features picnic pavilions, offers easy parking and beach access and hosts a fun food truck festival every Tuesday from 5 to 10pm. It’s also a tan-line-free zone: Haulover has one of the few nude beaches in the county. It’s also home to probably the best of Miami’s few dog-friendly beaches.

Faena District

13.  Faena District

Part of the Faena chain of luxury hotels, this architecturally stunning set of buildings sprinkled across mid-Beach plays hosts some of Miami’s best public gatherings, from cabaret shows to interactive art installations and more. The floor inside the Faena Forum looks like a massive kaleidoscope, while Faena Theater hosts a Jazz Series featuring a rotating cast of award-winning musicians from around the world.

LIV

14.  LIV

Simply put, LIV is the most famous club in South Beach. A 2017 million-dollar renovation added more LED screens that generate greater light spectacles to highlight its usual star-studded lineup—everyone from Travis Scott and Skrillex to Justin Bieber has held court at LIV. Come for LIV’s popular weekly Sunday night party (LIV on Sunday), where you’ll see no less than five famous rappers.

Art Basel Miami Beach

15.  Art Basel Miami Beach

  • Dec 10, 2023

Art Basel, which stages  four  major fairs each year—in Hong Kong, Basel, Miami Beach and, most recently, Paris—focuses on modern and contemporary art and puts more than 200 leading galleries and 4,000 artists from across the globe in front of the art world’s top curators, museums and collectors at the Miami Beach Convention Center . The weekend of Art Basel (December 8–10, 2023) has become a major draw for Miami, with parties, satellite fairs and major events being held in conjunction with the show—have fun celebrity-spotting.

South Beach, Miami Beach

Located on a barrier island and connected to the mainland by a series of bridges, Miami Beach is a mix of quiet neighborhoods, lively entertainment-focused areas, and long stretches of soft-sand beaches. The southernmost portion of the island is the historic and action-packed area known as South Beach, and this is where you'll find many of the top attractions and things to do.

One of the biggest attractions in Miami Beach is the Art Deco Historic District , with pastel buildings from the 1930s and early 1940s sporting classic neon signs. An expensive tourist district, this area features numerous beachfront restaurants, shops, hotels, and plenty of sunbathing opportunities.

Miami Beach

The main street in this area is Ocean Drive , a section of road located along the oceanfront and home to some beautiful Art Deco buildings. Ocean Drive was closed to all but pedetrian traffic in May of 2020 but in 2022 opened to one-way vehicle traffic from 15th Street to 5th Street.

One block inland, running parallel with Ocean Drive, is Collins Avenue . Collins Avenue is actually State Road A1A and is the main street in Miami Beach, joining numerous neighborhoods.

If you are looking to stay in this area, see our selection of recommended luxury, mid-range, and budget hotels .

Even if you have no interest in the beach, the Art Deco Historic District is worth a trip out to Miami Beach. This architectural style, popular in the 1930s and 40s, dominates the trendy South Beach neighborhood .

These uniquely designed buildings, in a range of pastel colors and displaying large neon signs, were built following a devastating hurricane that struck in 1926. Many are hotels and restaurants, most of which have been beautifully restored. Along some of the main streets, awnings on the lower level of these buildings provide shade for outdoor dining areas. Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue are the two main streets through the area.

If you are interested in staying in one of these historic gems, many of the Art Deco buildings still function as hotels and have much more character than modern hotels. Some good options are the National Hotel Miami Beach or the more moderately priced Hotel Breakwater South Beach .

South Beach

Located at the southern end of Miami Beach is the always action-packed neighborhood of South Beach. This is what many people have in mind when they plan a beach vacation to Miami. The wide section of beach that fronts the ocean along Ocean Drive is one of the big attractions. Often full of people in summer, this is the most popular beach in Miami and one of the top beaches in Florida .

This is a place to see and be seen, but also a place to swim and enjoy the shallow waters, escape the heat, and soak up the sun. A paved walk is set well back from the beach, and in behind is Ocean Drive. Art Deco buildings line the streets and offer luxury hotel rooms and a good mix of dining options.

South Beach is home to several popular festivals and events held throughout the year. By day, it's a great place to wander around or hang out on the beach. At night it comes alive with dining and nightlife.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

This National Historic Landmark, set on 28 acres, was the luxurious winter home of 20th-century industrialist, James Deering. Built in 1916, the mansion features 34 rooms arranged around a central courtyard.

It took more than 1,100 workers and craftsmen to complete the Vizcaya project, many of whom were brought over from Europe to ensure authenticity in design.

The Italian Renaissance-style villa is filled with an impressive collection of European furniture and decorative arts from the 15th to 19th centuries.

The grounds and gardens contain beautiful Italian and French fountains, pools, and sculptures. A breakwater at the base of the steps leading into Biscayne Bay is an ornately carved barge, featuring female figures.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park, just a short drive from Miami, protects one of Florida's most unique natural features. These swamplands, covering about 1.5 million acres, are home to alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and birds. This whole area is essentially a shallow river flowing out to the ocean.

Within the park is an informative Visitors Center, as well as walking trails and boardwalks for wildlife viewing. One of the most popular walking trails in the park is the Anhinga Trail , which leaves from the Royal Palm Visitor Center. This trail is less than a mile long but leads through terrain where visitors are likely to see alligators and other animals. This trail is wheelchair accessible and non-strenuous.

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the Everglades is on an airboat tour. These high-speed boat trips take visitors out into the marshes and streams to see alligators and other wildlife. The Miami Everglades Airboat Adventure with Transport half-day tour provides transport from your hotel to the park, and includes a 30-minute airboat ride, a live alligator show at the Everglades Alligator Farm, and transport back to your hotel.

Waterfront at Bayside Marketplace

Bayside Marketplace is a large outdoor-style mall with more than 120 specialty and tourist shops, numerous cafes and restaurants, and daily live entertainment. Visitors will find some well-known chain stores, as well as many unique, one-of-a-kind places. The marketplace draws locals as well as tourists.

As may be evident in the name, the mall is located along Miami's waterfront, looking out over docks and boats. Many people come here simply to soak up the atmosphere. Tour boats leave from here, visiting locations around Biscayne Bay. There is also a water taxi service to Miami Beach and downtown hotels located in the area.

A brand new attraction has risen at Bayside Market: the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel . Towering 200 feet in the air, this giant Ferris wheel has 42 climate-controlled passenger gondolas plus one glass-floored VIP version. The views out over Biscayne Bay and Miami you'll see during your 15-minute ride are spectacular.

Little Havana and Calle Ocho

Little Havana, the Cuban district of Miami , isn't known for its wealth of tourist attractions but more for its distinctive cultural scene. Restaurants and specialty food shops line the streets, and Latin music drifts through the air. Locals socialize in the open spaces.

Murals grace the walls of buildings, showing important Cuban figures and scenes of daily life. Calle Ocho is the main thoroughfare running through the district and home to much of the activity, but Little Havana spreads well beyond, into the surrounding streets and avenues. For people-watching, the area offers a great deal of entertainment. And, of course, this is the place to visit for Cuban cuisine or perhaps, a surprise to most visitors, a great haircut at one of the numerous barber shops.

The Calle Ocho Festival , held in March, is a celebration of Cuban culture and the largest of its kind in the world. Over the years this street festival has expanded to include more Latin American cultures and is now a great way to experience Latin American music and Caribbean cuisine.

Bayfront Park

Bayfront Park, on the east side of Biscayne Boulevard, is a 32-acre green space, adjacent to the Bayside Marketplace. The park has several interesting monuments and sculptures. One of the unique features is the electronically controlled Pepper Fountain.

Other highlights include the Challenger Memorial , commemorating the crew of the Challenger spacecraft; the Light Tower , an amphitheater used for musical performances of all kinds; and a children's playground. Locals often come here just to run or walk on the paved trails.

A waterfront trail extends from Bayfront Marketplace to the park past the FPL Solar Amphitheater. Near the park are other interesting attractions including the Freedom Tower, the Kaseya Center, and Maurice A. Ferré Park.

Perez Art Museum

The Perez Art Museum, known locally as the PAMM, occupies a section of prime real estate on Miami's waterfront. Inside an architecturally stunning building designed by Herzog & de Mueron is housed artwork from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The museum has been celebrating art from local and international artists for over 25 years. In addition to the permanent collection, the PAMM hosts a regular procession of temporary exhibits. The interior of the building is almost a work of art in itself. Light, airy spaces along with incredible views out over Biscayne Bay invoke a sense of calm and introspection, helping to aid in your appreciation of the artwork. You'll find the permanent exhibits are primarily displayed on the first and second floors; the temporary exhibits are usually on the second floor.

The PAMM has a well-regarded on-site restaurant named Verde. Settle in at a table either inside or outside on the expansive patio and enjoy a light lunch while you soak up the fantastic views out over the water.

Save a few dollars on parking (flat rate of $15) by combining a visit here with a stop in at the Phillip and Patricia Museum of Science located right next door.

Miami Seaquarium

Located on the Rickenbacker Causeway on the way to Key Biscayne, the Miami Seaquarium is a good place to take the family for an afternoon of entertainment and education. This aquatic facility is home to a wide variety of sea creatures, including killer whales, dolphins, stingrays, seals, and penguins among many, many others.

The Seaquarium offers a variety of animal shows; however, the killer whale and dolphin shows are currently suspended as of writing. But don't despair, Salty the Sealion is still performing! If you'd like to get up close and personal, animal encounters are available for an additional fee. These include three options for interacting with dolphins, one with penguins, and the opportunity to swim with seals.

In addition to the shows and animal encounters, the Seaquarium has an extensive number of educational animal exhibits and an area devoted to marine conservation.

Walkway in front of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Ideal for a rainy day or if you are looking for something to do off the beach, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is jam-packed with interesting things for all ages.

The museum is divided into four areas: The aquarium is all about the ocean, with a focus on South Florida. The planetarium helps bring an understanding of the solar system through interactive displays and shows. In the North and West wings, other permanent and traveling exhibits help to explain the world we live in.

Across all areas, displays are interactive and fun, and the viewing areas in the aquarium are exceptional.

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens

Miami is a green city. Lush tropical vegetation grows here with abandon, nourished by the frequent rain, warm temperatures, and sunny days. One of the best places to see the wonderful show that Mother Nature puts on is at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens. Originally founded in 1938, the entire organization is now run by passionate volunteers and is a first-class operation.

Extensive grounds are spread out over 83 acres, allowing you to walk for miles. If that sounds a bit daunting, take one of the 45 minute-long tram tours instead. The tours are led by a knowledgeable guide and provide a fascinating insight to the gardens. Even if you are only slightly interested in plants, you'll find something interesting in one of the 27 exhibits and collections.

Owing to the size of the gardens, it's important to plan out your visit. Most of the attractions are in the southwest area of the gardens, reached by walking straight to the tram stop area from the main entrance and then turning right. Along the way, look down at the pathway to see all manner of leaves imprinted in the cement. This pathway will take you past interesting viewpoints and the entrance to the Richard H. Simmons Rainforest area. Be sure to take a stroll through this area, where mist snakes along the pathway, and rain showers take place among the plants.

Beyond the rainforest area are the Clinton Family Conservatory and the Wings of the Tropics exhibit. Enter the building, and find yourself in a wonderland of colorful butterflies and tropical flowers. Have your camera ready to try to snap a picture of the stunning blue morpho butterfly.

Spread throughout the gardens are 11 sculptures, including two by the acclaimed glass artists Dale Chihuly. A good spot to grab a light lunch is the Glasshouse Café. Tables are spread among the greenery, and it's a pleasant spot to refresh and recharge.

Unless you've ventured further afield, you may find yourself walking back past one of the more unusual plant displays in the gardens: the Lougheed Spiny Forest of Madagascar. Large trees with spikes definitely discourage any touching! Nearby is a giant baobab tree dating from the mid 1930s, planted by the founder, David Fairchild.

Lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

Miami is fortunate in the fact that it has one of Florida's most beautiful state parks only a bridge ride away. Saved from development by Bill Baggs in the 1960s, this perfectly preserved wilderness is a perfect place for a family beach day trip. One of the main attractions is the 1.25-mile-long soft-sand beach, providing amazing views out over the Atlantic Ocean.

The park is long and relatively narrow, and where you park depends on what you'd like to do. If you just want to hit the beach, park near access #6. If you'd like to visit the beach and visit the historic lighthouse, park at access #7. Fishing more your thing? Park at the far end of the road in the parking lot by the washrooms, and walk out to the fishing docks or set up on the seawall.

The park is also a migratory bird hot spot. To have a chance at seeing birds, walk Robin's Birding Trail.

Hobie Beach

One thing you learn pretty quickly about Miami is that it can be an expensive place. Road tolls, restaurant prices, park and attraction admissions – the costs can add up quite quickly. For a delightful beach spot that's gentle on the pocketbook, head to Hobie Beach.

It's easily located on the Rickenbacker Causeway, and parking here is, amazingly, free! Soft white sand and gentle waves (if any) make this one of the most accessible beaches in the area. Hobie Beach is dog friendly – pooches can run leash-free here on the sand and in the water.

Note that Hobie Beach exists in two locations. The first location you come to as you cross the causeway is the area that rents sailboats and is popular with the windsurfing and sailing crowd. The beach here is narrow and rocky. Farther along is the main beach area described above.

Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami houses more than 3,000 wild animals, including 40 endangered species. Unlike many traditional zoos, animals here are grouped with other species they would normally co-exist with peacefully in the wild, and kept in settings similar to their natural habitats.

One of the most enjoyable experiences at the zoo is feeding the giraffes. Kids will be amazed as these gentle giants reach down with their long necks to pluck a treat from their hands.

This is the only zoo in the continental United States located in a subtropical climate. More than 1,000 species of trees and plants can also be found on the grounds, including a large collection of orchids.

Children will find plenty of entertainment options. If they are bored with the animals, they can head over to the play areas and enjoy some splashing around at the water-themed play area.

Aerial view of the Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay

This former home of Charles Deering is a 444-acre estate, protecting globally endangered pine rockland habitat, as well as coastal tropical hardwood rockland hammocks, mangrove forests, salt marshes, and a coastal dune island.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places , Deering Estate at Cutler is home to the Richmond Cottage, which served as a hotel, as well as historical buildings dating from 1896 to 1922, and an American Indian burial ground dating from 1500.

Charles Deering was an art collector, who, along with his brother James, accumulated a great number of works by the Old Masters. Deering himself also painted, and some of his works are on display here. The Artist Village at the estate has become an important cultural center, featuring art and artists programs.

Sign at Wynwood Walls

In the warehouse district of Wynwood, the formerly drab exterior warehouse walls have been transformed into colorful pieces of art. The Wynwood Walls, plastered in street art, or what most people think of as graffiti, have brought new life to this area.

Brought about by Tony Goldman in 2009, the district has attracted big names in the world of street art from across North America and around the world. Since it was started, more than 80,000 square feet of wall space have been graced with paintings in this unique artform.

The entire area is full of colorful street art. Wander around on your own, or for greater insight into the murals, sign up online for a guided tour. If you want to see famous name artists, and purchase prints, visit the Wynwood Walls Museum. Inside this gated area, you'll find 35 walls, retail shops, and galleries. This area used to be free, but now an admission fee is charged.

Miami Children's Museum

Always a fun outing for children, the Miami Children's Museum is housed in a colorful and creatively designed facility with more than 56,000 square feet of space. Educational and entertaining exhibits are designed to appeal to children's curiosity and creativity.

Fourteen themed galleries revolve around arts, culture, community, and communication, and four outdoor exhibits allow kids a chance to play and enjoy time outside. Some of the exhibits are definitely Miami themed: the ability to explore a cruise ship and the ability to explore the Port of Miami.

Key Biscayne and Crandon Park

South, beyond Miami Beach and over the Rickenbacker Causeway, is Key Biscayne, a small community with lovely beaches and beautiful parks. Of particular note is Crandon Park with an offshore reef that leaves the shoreline protected from big waves and perfect for swimming.

The park has a Family Amusement Center, making it particularly popular with families, and a Nature Center. There is generally ample parking, good facilities, chair rentals available, and lifeguards on duty.

On windy days, you may see kiteboarders ripping across the waves, being towed by their colorful kites.

American Airlines Arena

The FTX Arena, formerly the American Airlines Arena, is the home of the NBA's Miami Heat . It is also the main venue for large concerts and other special events, including top-name singers and performers. It can hold more than 19,000 people.

The structure itself opened in 1999, has been awarded the Leed Green Building Certification for being an energy-efficient building. The arena stands out prominently on Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami.

Venetian Pool in Coral Gables

If you become tired of the beach, or the wind is up, or you are just looking for freshwater to swim in, head to the historic Venetian Pool. Located in the beautiful city of Coral Gables, just south of Miami, the pool dates from the early 1920s. The water in the pools is as pure as it gets. Fed from an underground spring, the water is crystal clear and refreshing. Each day, the 820,000-gallon pool is drained and refilled by the spring.

The pool is a byproduct of a former quarrying operation that used the coral dug from here for the construction of homes in Coral Gables. The area surrounding the pool is like a scene from Venice, Italy. Bridges, towers, and small plazas surround the pool, giving it a very European look and feel, while caves, grottoes, and two waterfalls provide hours of enjoyment for children and adults alike.

The pool is open from the start of February until the end of November each year. Ample free parking is available across the street in the public lot.

Address: 2702 de Soto Boulevard, Coral Gables, Florida

Coral Castle

The Coral Castle is the result of one man's 28 years of carving, using his own home-made tools. This incredible creation, made of limestone, was built by Edward Leedskalnin between 1923 and 1951. He kept his methods private and would not allow anyone to watch him work, leaving many people to wonder how he did it.

Today, you can tour the property and see the most famous structure, a giant stone gate, which opens effortlessly with the touch of a finger, as well as carvings that include stone tables and chairs, unique figures, and other pieces.

Address: 28655 South Dixie Highway, Miami, Florida

Freedom Tower

One of the most striking buildings on Biscayne Boulevard, Freedom Tower displays a "wedding-cake" style. Built in 1925, it is one of the oldest skyscrapers in the southeastern United States, and served for many years as the headquarters of the Miami Daily News.

Its name comes from its role as the immigration-processing center for hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees who arrived in the 1960s. Today, it stands as a tribute to Cuban immigration and is used, in part, as a contemporary art museum.

Address: 600 North Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida

Miami's main tourist area is Miami Beach, with its lovely soft-sand beaches, Art Deco buildings, and vibrant atmosphere. There are all kinds of hotels here, from small, quaint boutique hotels in landmark buildings to the large chain hotels. Most of the hotels have pools and are within easy walking distance of the ocean and a variety of great restaurants.

Luxury Hotels :

  • With 600 feet of prime beachfront property and occupying an entire city block on Collins Ave, 1 Hotel South Beach is one of the trendiest luxury properties in town. The hotel has 426 rooms and suites, and many feature expansive views from floor-to-ceiling windows that face the Atlantic Ocean. The décor is maritime themed and makes use of reclaimed driftwood in furnishings. There are four swimming pools on-site, including the largest rooftop pool in South Beach. There are a number of restaurants with a healthy focus, and guests have access to rides in the hotel's Tesla vehicles within a three-mile radius. Pets are also welcome to stay.
  • Right on the trendiest section of South Beach, The Setai, Miami Beach is a stunning, Asian-inspired luxury resort that is popular with couples on a romantic getaway. It's an all suite hotel, and these begin studio sized and go all the way up to a four-bedroom penthouse. Expect high-end decor like hand-crafted Duxiana beds and high thread-count, Italian sheets. There are also in-room espresso machines and rainfall showers in large baths. The Setai also boasts a host of amenities, including a posh spa, three swimming pools, and sun-loungers and umbrellas on the beach. There are also multiple restaurants on-site. Try Jaya for Asian-inspired fare and The Ocean Grill for international cuisine.
  • Literally in the middle of the Miami skyline with views of the Miami River, Biscayne Bay, and downtown from the balconies attached to every room and suite, the just remodeled Kimpton EPIC Hotel is another top luxury sleep. The décor is urban contemporary, and we love the floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as the comfy beds with quality linens. The Kimpton is known for being super dog-friendly, and there is never a pet deposit to stay. Also noteworthy are two on-site restaurants: Area 31 with outdoor patio seating and Zuma on the ground floor. An on-site spa and fitness center and two swimming pools with cabanas that can be reserved complete the amenities picture.
  • In the heart of the Brickell neighborhood in downtown Miami, the Four Seasons Hotel Miami is a popular choice for families seeking a luxury resort stay. The resort even doubles as a Latin American art gallery, hosting a multi-million-dollar collection that is exhibited throughout. Child-focused amenities here include a kids' club with organized activities and a children's section in one of the two rooftop swimming pools. Adults can check out a class at the on-site Equinox fitness center or book a massage at The Spa, both located on the hotel's fourth floor.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • If you want to be near South Beach but can't afford to pay a fortune, then try the boutique Urbanica The Meridian Hotel , which offers a more affordable, luxe experience. The hotel in the hip South of Fifth neighborhood in Miami Beach features minimalist design, with white and beige hues, and is known for its personalized service.
  • Another upmarket, mid-range choice is the Marriott Stanton South Beach , which is right on the beach. Set at the southern side of South Beach's Ocean Drive, it is a kid-friendly property but can also work for couples on a budget. There are two swimming pools and a hot tub on-site, as well as a spa with a sauna and a modern gym. There are a few dining options as well, including a good restaurant fronting the sea.
  • It is usually more affordable to stay in downtown Miami than Miami Beach, and these days the downtown area around Brickell, where the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton - Miami-Brickell Downtown is located has plenty to keep you occupied. The good-value hotel has a classy vibe and even features its own contemporary art collection. Other perks include a free breakfast and swimming pool.

Budget Hotels :

  • Even budget hotels in Miami Beach tend to be pricey unless you're visiting in the super low season. Try the Hotel Shelley for a quality budget sleep in an Art Deco building right on Collins Ave. The rooms have minimalist design and marble baths.
  • The Element Miami International Airport is right by the airport, but Miami's airport is not inconveniently located to get around the city. This hotel offers renovated rooms, with small kitchens, and an outdoor pool. The free shuttle is handy for late or early flights.
  • Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour: To see the sights of Miami at your own pace, it doesn't get any easier than a Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour . The three routes hit all the major destinations, including South Beach, Downtown Miami, Coral Gables, and Little Havana, with a total of 40 stops to choose from.
  • Sightseeing, Cruise, and Everglades Tour : If you really want to make the most of your time in Miami, the most comprehensive and convenient way to see and experience the highlights is on a Miami Combo Tour: City Sightseeing, Biscayne Bay Cruise, and Everglades Airboat Ride . This tour checks off everything but the beach, and it's all wrapped up in a one-day tour. The trip includes a narrated coach tour through the city; a cruise on the beautiful, clear waters of Biscayne Bay; and an airboat ride through the Florida Everglades.
  • Visit Key West : Take an organized Key West Day Trip to see the famous bridges that link the Keys, spend an afternoon wandering around Key West, or add on a glass-bottom boat tour, a snorkeling cruise, hop-on-hop-off tour of Key West, or parasailing. This 12-hour tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off at your Miami hotel, bus transportation to Key West, and plenty of free time to see the sights.

If you're planning a vacation packed with plenty of sunshine, endless entertainment, and festivals galore, the best time of year to visit Miami is spring .

March through May are considered high season (as are the winter months of December through February), which means you should expect crowds of tourists splaying themselves on Miami's best beaches , as well as increased rates on things like hotel rooms and local attractions. You may also need to call in advance to book a dinner reservation.

During spring, you can expect beautiful weather. With highs in the high 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, it's not too hot, nor is it too humid. Plus, spring offers a slew of events to keep visitors busy. From tennis tournaments to outdoor concerts to food festivals, you won't be lacking in fun things to do.

This time of year is also free of the intense rains and pesky insects that plague the sticky summer months, as well as the hurricanes that hit during late fall.

A word of advice: Avoid spring break ; unless you're a fan of all day (and all night) parties, screaming youth, and bikini contests. Prices go up during this popular holiday and so does the noise level!

Easter is another time to steer clear of Miami if you're hoping to avoid crowds and keep your costs low.

Miami Beach

Miami Beach

To many people, both locals and visitors, Miami IS Miami Beach. After all, this is where you'll find some of the best food, the liveliest parties, the most beautiful scenery, and the best people-watching in the whole city. Located on a barrier island outside downtown Miami , Miami Beach is technically its own city. A city defined by its beach culture and its beautiful views out over Biscayne Bay and the city of Miami on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Travel distance from Miami

Miami Beach is only seven miles from downtown Miami over the MacArthur Causeway. It takes around 25 minutes to drive here and about the same amount of time on bus route 119.

Activity recommendations

North Beach Oceanside Park: Miami Beach is divided into North Beach and South Beach, and each has its own flavor, atmosphere, and attractions. Still, it's hard to find a destination in this area more iconic than North Beach Oceanside Park. Generally a laid-back place with beautiful ocean views that's great for lounging in the sun and taking a break, North Miami Beach heats up every month during the full moon when it hosts a legendary full moon party on Collins Avenue that is one of the best in the area.

Lummus Park: South Beach's answer to North Beach Oceanside Park is this beautiful waterfront park with not only a fantastic beach but also children's play areas and even a workout area. South Beach also has tons of other attractions, from great restaurants and bars to interesting museums, so it's almost impossible to get bored here.

Sunny Isles Beach in Miami

Sunny Isles Beach

Located to the north of Miami, close to Haulover Beach and Oleta River State Park , Sunny Isles Beach offers a two-mile stretch of sand that is often called Florida's Riviera. A great place to relax and enjoy the sunshine and turquoise waters South Florida is known for, it's no surprise Sunny Isles Beach is generally regarded as one of the best beaches of Miami.

The towering residential condo buildings of Sunny Isles are around 20 miles north of downtown Miami. Expect a drive of about 45 minutes, or you could spend an hour and 20 minutes on bus route 119.

Swimming: Swimming is always very much on the menu no matter where you go in Miami. Still, with warm clear waters and lifeguards on patrol, Sunny Isles Beach is one of the best options in town. Along with swimming, the clear water makes it great for snorkeling and diving, so if you're interested in water sports, you won't regret visiting this location.

Gateway Park: One of many urban green spaces along the length of Sunny Isles Beach, Gateway Park stands out thanks to its butterfly garden and stage that hosts performances throughout the year. In this high-tech park, you'll also find a solar-powered phone charging station and free Wi-Fi so you can stay connected while enjoying the beach.

Crandon Park Beach near Miami

Crandon Park Beach

At the north end of Key Biscayne, Crandon Park Beach provides great options for anyone looking for adventure. Part of the beautiful Crandon Park, which provides a great introduction to the Florida Keys, this beautiful beach feels a lot further from the city than it really is.

Astonishingly, it's only six miles from central Miami to Crandon Park Beach. That means a drive of around 20 minutes. Unfortunately, public transport is tricky in this area, so while you can get here by taking several different buses, the journey will take well over an hour.

Water sports: The warm waters off Key Biscayne are ideal for exploring via kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or on a kiteboard. And don't worry if you've never tried any of these activities before, because there are plenty of local businesses that will give you lessons or rent you equipment to explore by yourself. There are few better ways to stay active here than by getting out on the water, so don't miss this opportunity to explore the Atlantic Ocean.

Bill Baggs Cape: On the southern tip of Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape is a fantastic place to explore. Florida has lots of white sand beaches, but this is one of the most charming, and the barrier reef six miles offshore helps to keep the water calm and warm right through the year. Close to the city as it is, this beautiful beach will give you a glimpse of old Florida at what is generally recognized as one of the best beaches anywhere in the United States.

Haulover Beach near Miami

Haulover Beach

Located close to Sunny Isles, Haulover Beach is a place to let it all hang out – quite literally. The nude beach here is legendary throughout Florida, so if you're looking for a more natural beach experience, this is where you'll find it. However, not all of the beaches are clothing optional, and the parts that aren't also make a great place for families.

Around 16 miles separate Miami from Haulover Beach. Given the city's traffic, that can drive anything from 30 minutes to over an hour. Trusty bus route 119 can also get you there, but it will take well over an hour.

Naturist beach: This secluded spot at the north end of Haulover Beach makes it ideal for nudists, so if you want to even out those tan lines, this is the place to come. As is usually the case on naturist beaches worldwide, this part of Haulover Beach offers a more anarchic and friendly vibe than lots of other places, so whether you've always wanted to try a nude beach or you're a practiced naturist, this is a great place to come.

Kite flying: Not all of Haulover Beach is clothing optional. And the parts that aren't make a great place to fly kites. In fact, the nearby park often hosts kite-building workshops, so you can build your own kite and then attempt to fly it on the beach. This is a great family activity and a fun way to enjoy a beautiful Florida beach.

Food trucks Tuesdays at Haulover Park: Every Tuesday, Haulover Beach becomes one of the best places to eat in all of Miami. Dozens of food trucks descend on this popular park to sell their recipes to locals and tourists, making this possibly the best venue in all of Miami for a picnic. Bring your appetite and enjoy some of Miami's most creative dishes with the incredible scenery of the beach as the backdrop.

Oleta River State Park mangrove forest

Oleta River State Park

Right next to Haulover Beach, Florida's largest urban park offers a huge beach and tons of fascinating waterways to explore. With over a thousand acres of protected wilderness here, it's the perfect place to see the more natural side of Florida without straying too far from Miami itself.

It's about a 20-minute drive from downtown Miami to the State Park. You can also get here by taking the Line 3 bus, which takes about an hour to go direct to the park.

Paddling: Florida in general, and Miami in particular, are blessed with many great places to explore with a self-propelled watercraft. But maybe none are quite as impressive as Oleta River State Park. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and journey through the mangrove forest the park is famous for, and you'll be exploring the primeval nature of Florida. Keep an eye out for local wildlife in the crystal clear waters, and you'll feel like a pioneer setting out for uncharted lands instead of a tourist exploring just outside one of the country's major cities.

Biking: The park offers more than 15 miles of designated biking trails. In low-lying Florida, exploring by bike is a great way to get around and see more of what the state offers, and don't worry if you didn't bring your bike because there are several businesses that will happily rent you one. Download a map and set out on your own two-wheel adventure in this incredible location.

Best beaches near Miami

Matheson Hammock Park Beach

If taking on the Atlantic Ocean is a bit much for you, but you still want to do some swimming and cool off from the oppressive Florida heat, Matheson Hammock Park Beach might be just the place for you. This man-made pool channels the waters of Biscayne Bay, so you'll be protected from the surf but still able to enjoy the warm coastal waters of Florida.

It takes a drive of around 20 minutes south of Miami to reach this park. Public transportation in this area isn't great, so a car is probably the best way to get here.

Swimming: The main attraction in this peaceful park is the lagoon swimming area. This man-made beach is shallow, which makes it easy to get into the water, so it's an excellent choice for families and anyone with physical challenges or bad balance.

Marina: Matheson Hammock Marina lets you rent paddleboards and kayaks to continue to explore the mangrove forest. You can also take waterskiing lessons or try your hand at kiteboarding. Either way, it provides excellent ways to get the adrenaline flowing and enjoy this beautiful seaside location.

When it comes to beaches in Miami, you really are spoiled for choice. And these beautiful parks also provide some of the best activities when you're visiting Miami on a budget .

You can stick to easy-to-reach places like South Beach or head further afield to places like Fort Lauderdale Beach to enjoy some of the best weekend trips from Miami. Plus, there's always the outstanding tropical beauty of the Florida Keys just waiting to be explored from here.

However you want to enjoy your vacation, you can rest assured that Miami and South Florida have a beach view. Leave your bags behind at a convenient Miami luggage storage so that you don't have to bring more than you need to and enjoy these incredible coastal locations in and around the city.

The ultimate guide to Miami's neighborhoods

Miami is a sprawling metropolis containing a multitude of cultures and attractions. While that makes for an incredible trip, it can be tricky for first-timers to figure out the best place to base themselves.

It all depends on what you want to do and who you're traveling with. Are you downing cafecitos and cocktails before salsa dancing into the wee hours or kayaking and stretching out on a beautiful stretch of sand to relax? The best neighborhood for families is unlikely to have a thumping nightlife, but some areas offer a little bit of something for everyone.

Think about your must-do priorities in Magic City (if you're in need of inspiration, check out our favorite things to do there ) and let our guide to Miami's neighborhoods help you choose the best possible base for your vacation.

1. Downtown Miami

Best neighborhood for an all-round taste of miami (sans beach).

If you want to get a taste of nearly everything the city has to offer, Downtown Miami is ideal. Marvel at some of the city's most historic buildings, dating as far back as the 1890s – among them, the Olympia Theater (originally a silent movie theater) and the Freedom Tower (once a help center for Cuban refugees in the 1960s and 70s). Spend some time exploring and snapping photos, then learn more about the city's past at the HistoryMiami Museum .

But downtown is far from stuck in the past. Aside from the high rises, there are restaurants and retail to enjoy at Bayside Marketplace , plus boat tours on Biscayne Bay and a Ferris wheel that offers dazzling views of the neighborhood.

Fancy some culture? The Pérez Art Museum boasts a robust collection of art from Latin America and beyond, while the adjacent Frost Science Museum is home to a spectacular aquarium, planetarium and rotating exhibits. And if that's not enough, you can always see what's happening at the Kaseya Center , home of the Miami Heat and a major entertainment venue.

Best neighborhood for art and design

Formerly known as Little San Juan, this once-heavily Puerto Rican neighborhood has undergone tremendous change, most notably because of gentrification. Today, it's an international hub of art, fashion and design. Brilliant murals adorn nearly every building facade, many of which were created by top street artists like Shepard Fairey and Atomik. Throw a stone in any direction, and you're sure to hit an art gallery, cocktail bar, vintage shop, uber-hip clothing boutique or even a taco shop that doubles as a speakeasy.

While there's a dearth of hotels in the area, you can book a room at the Moxy , Arlo or an Airbnb. Otherwise, venture into the neighborhood at your leisure and make a day of it by picking up an iced latte at Panther Coffee before wandering between the Wynwood Walls , Museum of Graffiti and The Art of Hip Hop . The vibe changes to adults-only at night – enjoy a delicious meal at Kush or Bakan , then bar hop between R House , Dirty Rabbit , Gramps or any other spot where the music's good.

3. South Beach

Best neighborhood for beach time and nightlife.

Surely the most visited area of Miami, South Beach continues to draw crowds for several reasons. First, it's the best neighborhood for beach access no matter where you stay – many hotels offer private access and even those that don't often offer amenities like chairs and umbrellas. Traveling with kids? Stay near South Point Park – they'll love the splash pads and waving to outgoing cruise ships from the pier. Prefer something more lively? Anywhere along Ocean Drive or even Washington Ave is excellent.

Speaking of lively, the nightlife in South Beach is hard to beat. Popular staples like Mango's , The Clevelander  and Nikki Beach are always a good time, but feel free to branch out. Do Not Sit On The Furniture is a small club with huge tunes delivered by guest DJs, while M2 gives you that bass-all-over-your-body immersive party experience. And if dives are more your scene, you can't go wrong with a night at the infamous Mac's Club Deuce (if it was good enough for Anthony Bourdain, it's good enough for us).

Check out  our favorite beaches  – beyond South Beach

4. Little Havana

Best for immersing yourself in latin american culture.

Little Havana has plenty to offer in terms of culture and charm. Drive (or walk) along the infamous Calle Ocho, and you'll be greeted by giant, colorful rooster statues – a nod to the actual roosters that stroll about the area.

While there, check out the Cuban Walk of Fame to see the names of some of the biggest stars from the island nation. Follow up with a visit to the Cubaocho Museum for some history lessons as well as a chance to peruse art.

But the best thing about Little Havana? Hands down the opportunity to enjoy so many tasty dishes. Yes, this is understandably the best spot for Cuban cuisine and from Versailles to Sanguich , El Pub to El Rey de las Fritas – it's all delicious. But it's not just Cuban food on the menu – try Salvadoran food at El Atlakat , Nicaraguan food at Pinolandia or Yambo, or stop at La Casa de las Baleadas for Honduran fare. Your tastebuds will thank you.

5. Coconut Grove

Best neighborhood for seeing old-school miami.

If you'd like to experience some of Miami's lesser-known gems, spend some time in Coconut Grove. Quieter than SoBe but still plenty lively, the Grove is Miami's oldest neighborhood. Take a glimpse into the city's past at Barnacle Historic State Park (built in 1891, at a time when Miami was only accessible by boat).

Another must-see attraction is  Vizcaya Museum & Gardens  – this stunning waterfront villa, built in 1916, will make you feel like you've been transported to the Mediterranean. And if the weather's right, a stroll through the verdant Kampong Botanical Garden is a must.

Wander over to CocoWalk to experience the modern side of the Grove, an open-air center with boutique shops, restaurants, bars, a movie theater and more. While much of this area has been revamped in recent years, many beloved old staples are still around: delightful French bistro Le Bouchon du Grove , GreenStreet Cafe (known for their incomparable brunches), Barracuda and Sandbar (popular drinking holes), The Last Carro t (perfect for healthy food options) and El Taquito (an excellent taqueria that's open late). Make sure you check the calendar because the Grove hosts all kinds of fun events, from farmer's markets to open-air concerts.

A couple strolling in the shadow of pines, Key Biscayne, Miami, Florida, USA

6. Key Biscayne

Best for families seeking a low-key vacation.

If you're looking for a relaxing beach getaway with the kids, you simply can't go wrong with Key Biscayne . It's like a little world unto itself, with just one major road to get from one end to the other. Accommodations aren't plentiful – the Ritz Carlton is one of the few hotels in the area – but there are always Airbnbs available for the whole family (and you can still visit the Ritz for spa time).

Once there, you can divide your time between Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park . The former features one of the city's best Nature Centers, a mangrove boardwalk, guided hikes, plus plenty of space to enjoy the beach. Kiteboarding, kayaking and other eco-adventure tours are also available here.

The beaches at Bill Baggs are just as lovely, with opportunities to explore the on-site lighthouse, as well as go fishing, hiking, swimming, paddling and biking (single and quad bikes are available for rent). And if you're traveling with a four-legged friend, nearby Hobie Beach (near adjacent Virginia Key) is also a great place to spend a few hours.

3 Florida heat records broken Thursday. More may fall over weekend. See the forecast

Three florida counties now under heat advisory. take precautions to stay safe.

beaches to visit in miami florida

Three Florida cities set heat records Thursday, and more records may fall before the arrival of some tropical moisture next week.

A heat advisory was issued for portions of Miami-Dade County early Friday, June 7.

By 10 a.m., the heat advisory had been expanded to include Palm Beach and Broward counties. Heat indices between 104 and 108 are likely for most of South Florida.  Some areas could see a heat index of 110 , according to NWS.

Heat records set Thursday, June 6:

  • Winter Haven: 102
  • Sanford: 101
  • Punta Gorda: 97

AccuWeather  forecasters are predicting temperatures could be 5 to 10 degrees above historical averages Friday through Sunday. The potential for record heat means an increased risk for heat-related illnesses, including  heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

➤ Tropics watch: NHC tracking 3 tropical waves, including 1 in Caribbean

There is relief coming.

A dip in the jet stream is expected to pull some  tropical moisture into Florida next week. While there is a small chance, as of now, a tropical depression could form south of Florida, the system is forecast to bring several inches of rain, with the heaviest expected in South and Central Florida.

Those areas have been suffering drought conditions.

Why is it so hot in Florida?

The record high temperatures being experienced across portions of Florida can be attributed to several factors, including record warm water temperatures surrounding the state, along with a dome of high pressure suppressing cooling rainfall.

"Even by Florida standards, it's hot," said Brandon Buckingham, AccuWeather meteorologist. "Temperatures in the upper 90s and high dewpoints. That's some impressive heat."

What's a heat advisory? Heat advisory issued for this Florida county, with record highs expected. Here's where

Florida weather forecast: Record heat followed by rain

Temperatures this week, while feeling really hot, actually have been close to normal, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.

That's changing.

Starting Thursday, winds shifted to out of the south in response to a front moving toward Florida. Those winds will push temperatures into the mid to upper 90s. It's also bringing tropical moisture, which will make conditions outside feel very muggy, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.

Bottom line: temperatures will feel between 105 and 110 across much of the state.

By Friday, winds are expected to come out of the southwest, dumping heat gathered over land to the east coast of Florida, from the Space Coast south to Miami.

"Miami and Fort Lauderdale could break new records and the high temperature is likely to reach 95 degrees on Friday. The afternoon temperature for West Palm Beach is also forecast to beat a record established in 1998 of 94," the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network said.

Conditions won't improve over the weekend.

"On Saturday and Sunday, record temperatures will be possible across the I-4 corridor, from Tampa to Orlando, and along I-95, from Melbourne to Miami. Highs could range between 94 and 97 and with the humidity, the temperatures will feel as if they were above 105." Related contentlist (ID: 73892033007)

Up to 5 inches of rain possible across some portions of Florida next week

Numerous downpours and high rainfall are forecast from the start through the middle of the week.

"As of now, most models show the highest rainfall across southern Florida. Some areas could receive up to 5 inches between Sunday and Wednesday," the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network said.

The tropical downpours next week are expected to impact the entire Florida Peninsula and could expand across the Gulf Coast, according to AccuWeather.

Radar: Track storms using NWS radar

Could tropical depression form next week south of florida.

As the jet stream dips a tropical disturbance or tropical wave is expected to moves in from the east, "it is "there is a chance a tropical depression could evolve in the zone from the northwestern Caribbean to the eastern Gulf of Mexico," AccuWeather said.

"Unusually warm waters, well above the critical threshold of about 80 degrees, and a moist environment favor development. The upcoming jet stream dip may also help to provide some low-grade spin in the zone."

Inhibiting development and any significant strengthening will be how close everything is to land.

From June 12 to 16, a zone from the northwestern Caribbean to the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico could support tropical development.

"The average date of the first named storm in the Atlantic basin is June 20, so if a storm does form , it would be several days ahead of the historical average," said AccuWeather Lead Tropical Meteorologist Alex DaSilva.

"Regardless of development, there's the potential for very heavy rain across central and South Florida and portions of Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as tropical moisture surges north," DaSilva said.

Weekend weather forecast for Pensacola, Florida Panhandle

Pensacola, Panhandle: A surface cold front is moving into the forecast area from the north Friday morning and will be dropping south across the area later today. Afternoon temperatures expected to top out in the lower 90s. High temperatures could hit could remain in lower 90s Saturday. Heat indices forecast to hit 100 to 106 Sunday , according to the National Weather Service Mobile.

Weekend weather forecast for Tallahassee, North Florida

Tallahassee, North Florida: A lingering cold front draped across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend Friday will provide a small focus for showers and thunderstorms. The area will likely see the hottest temperatures of season so far as temperatures climb into the upper 90s on Saturday and Sunday. While the lack of significant humidity will keep the dangerous heat away, temps will still be above average with heat indices likely in the low 100s, according to the National Weather Service Tallahassee.

Weekend weather forecast for Jacksonville, Northeast Florida

Jacksonville, Northeast Florida: Another hot, humid day expected Friday, with near daily record highs possible heat indices between 101 and 107 . Isolated, strong storms possible across Northeast Florida. Expect sunny to mostly sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, with daytime temperatures well into the 90s possibly reaching 100 degrees in some areas Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Jacksonville.

Weekend weather forecast for Florida East Coast, from Daytona Beach to Stuart

East Central Florida: Scattered showers and lightning storms are expected from mid to late afternoon through early evening Friday. Hotter than normal temperatures continue Friday, with highs in the mid 90s and heat indices between 102 to 107 degrees . Decreased shower and storm chances will continue this weekend, increasing once again by the early to middle part of next week.

Hot temperatures will continue into the weekend with near record highs in the mid to upper 90s and heat indices reaching at least 100 to 107 degrees. A moderate to major heat risk is in the outlook for much of Central Florida, with urban areas reaching an extreme risk on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Melbourne.

South Florida: Some scattered thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon into the early evening. Storms may contain periods of heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning. Peak indices of 104 to 108 degrees are likely for most of South Florida today while a few areas could approach 110 degrees. A heat advisory will be in effect Friday from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. for areas of Miami Dade away from the coast.

Temperatures will remain hot through the weekend and into next week. Additional heat advisories or possibly excessive heat warnings may be necessary in coming days. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible each day, with the greatest coverage expected each afternoon over the interior, according to the National Weather Service Miami.

Southwest Florida: Hot temperatures will continue Friday and into the weekend away from the coast. Max temps over the interior likely in the upper 90s each day. Widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms will be possible next week, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay.

Fort Pierce Red Lobster restaurant to remain open amid potential bankruptcy closings

beaches to visit in miami florida

If you want Red Lobster's endless shrimp and cheddar bay biscuits, the Fort Pierce location still has its doors open amid impending closings impacting the seafood chain restaurant.

After nearly 100 Red Lobster locations across the country shuttered their doors last month, 24 Florida locations could see the same fate.

Bankruptcy documents  show  Red Lobster's owner  listing 228 rejected leases, which the company said would keep losing money. Some of them were among the locations that were closed in May, but there are still 135 in jeopardy, according to  Restaurant Business .

The Jensen Beach Red Lobster location closed its doors last month, leaving only one on the Treasure Coast.

Which Red Lobsters are in jeopardy of closing?

The bankruptcy filings list these 26 locations in jeopardy of closing if their leases cannot be renegotiated. Of the 26, two were already closed last month.
