As a first step, they have already removed 16 abusive elephant excursions from their program. The few that remain are those venues where elephants are seen in their natural habitat.

Thousands of people each year visit animal attractions, unaware of the hidden abuse going on behind the scenes. From riding elephants to taking selfies with tigers, many animal attractions inflict serious cruelty on animals in the name of entertainment. Yet the majority of people visiting the attractions are unaware of the suffering behind the scenes. That is why we have launched our before they book campaign.

Working together for sustainable change

World Animal Protection Sweden is looking forward to a long-term collaboration with Apollo, welcoming their commitment to completely exclude excursions from their program that involve animal abuse. In 2015, they plan on making further changes in their program that reflect sustainable and animal-friendly alternatives.

Kajsa Moström, the Communication and CSR Manager at Apollo said: “There is nothing that upsets our guests as much as children or animals in distress. In recent years we have seen an increased demand for animal-friendly excursions. Therefore we are taking this step.”

Elisabeth Tjärnström, Programmes Manager at World Animal Protection Sweden responded saying: “We are very pleased that Apollo has decided to take this step. They show that they do not wish to support activities such as elephant riding and thereby take responsibility for animal-friendly tourism.”

SAS and Apollo have signed an agreement on charter production for summer 2022 worth just over SEK 1 billion. Flights will depart from around 20 locations in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and fly to around 30 Mediterranean destinations in Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Albania, and Turkey.

Within the framework of their three-year collaboration, SAS and Apollo have signed an agreement concerning this summer’s charter flights within Scandinavia for a total of approximately 150,000 passengers.

The collaboration with Apollo is SAS’s largest agreement with a charter operator and the total contract value amounts to around SEK 3.4 billion for the first three years.

SAS continues to phase in new fuel-efficient aircraft and has now one of Europe’s most modern fleets. The charter flights will be flown using the new Airbus A320 aircraft offering the passengers a more comfortable and sustainable way of travel.

SAS strives to be a leader in sustainable aviation and works hard to reduce emissions. SAS does this, for example, with modern and fuel-efficient aircraft and by using sustainable aviation fuels and aims to reduce climate-affecting emissions by 25 percent in 2025.

Tour operator Apollo and SAS extend partnership for 2024 summer season

Tour operator Apollo and SAS Scandinavian Airlines have announced that they will extend their partnership for the 2024 summer season. The option to extend is part of a framework agreement signed in 2021 and the extension is worth around SEK1.4 billion (£105 million). SAS will fly Apollo customers from around 15 locations in Sweden, Norway and Denmark to around 20 Mediterranean destinations in Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Spain and Türkiye.

“We are proud of the longstanding partnership with Apollo and thrilled that SAS also next summer will welcome Apollo customers on board. SAS continues to add new and more sustainable aircraft to our fleet, providing passengers with a more comfortable and sustainable way of travel,” says Paul Verhagen, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer at SAS. 

Strategic partnerships, such as the one with Apollo, allows SAS to serve a seasonal demand that is important for Scandinavian travellers. Furthermore, it enables Apollo to offer direct flights from major cities as well as regional airports in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
