Commencing in the Roman city of Porto, the home of Port wine, Portugal’s once wild river Douro has been tamed by locks into resembling a series of finger lakes, adding greatly to the valley's ambience. Leaving behind the Atlantic influenced greenery of the coast you are soon immersed in a Mediterranean land of olives, vines, and picturesque, medieval hilltop villages. Our destination is the higher reaches of the valley from where we visit Salamanca - home of one of Europe’s oldest universities, two of its finest cathedrals, Spain’s finest city square and even the Inquisition! You will adore the away-from-it-all experience and visit some of Iberia’s most beautiful medieval towns, monasteries and vineyards, and feel you have been away for months!

EMBARK IN PORTO

Embark the ship in Porto and familiarize yourself with your five-star floating hotel. From the moment you board, the welcoming crew are at your service. In no time you’ll be settled into your luxurious, thoughtfully furnished accommodation and familiarising yourself with all the first-class aspects of this floating boutique hotel.

Route Map

As dawn breaks over Porto the adventure begins as our elegant vessel commences her stately passage upstream. Your first delicious breakfast is served by the attentive crew and whilst you linger over another coffee, you can really start to unwind as we leave the city skyline far behind. Head up on deck to appreciate the changing landscape in all its splendor as the river weaves its way between the lush hillsides; from the first morning on board, it’s very apparent that the Douro is one of Europe’s most photogenic river valleys and the topography has prevented the building of extensive riverside roads.

Thoughts turn to lunch, so reconvene with your fellow travelers in the elegant restaurant – its lovely panoramic windows ensure you won’t miss any of the spectacular views gliding by before we arrive later in the pretty little town of Pinhão. We enjoy a visit to a local historic quinta to learn all about the stages of wine production, from the planting of the vines, harvesting, the wine-making process and finally tasting and labeling. No visit would be complete without sampling some of their excellent produce of course, so we enjoy a tasting before returning to the ship.

Tonight, as you enter the restaurant for the Welcome Dinner, feel free to choose your table. We are moored in Pinhão overnight.

CASTELO RODRIGO

As dawn breaks, early risers can witness the ship’s graceful departure. Relax over a leisurely breakfast whilst the ever-changing scenery idly slips by through the restaurant’s superb panoramic windows.

The Douro was once a wild river, notoriously challenging to navigate, especially for the traditional flat-bottomed boats, which often foundered in its waters. Today it has been tamed by a system of dams and locks, which have raised the water level to produce a topography reminiscent of Scotland’s lochs that enhances the valley’s charm. As we cruise into ever more rural territory towards the Spanish border, the river here is at its most peaceful. It’s the perfect time to take a refreshing dip in the Sun Deck pool – a rare treat on a cruise ship – or catch up on some reading, perhaps with a cool pre-lunch glass of vinho verde, the local, gently fizzy white wine. Portuguese wine is simply outstanding but production is low, so the best is rarely exported. Our on-board wine list includes some excellent regional wines and the friendly and attentive restaurant staff will gladly guide you through them. Do experiment a little and you’ll be greatly rewarded.

This afternoon we visit Castelo Rodrigo, a delightful 12th-century walled village tucked away in the picturesque highland ranges bordering Spain. Its church was a resting place on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and it is said that Saint Francis himself stayed here. The views are simply stupendous, stretching across almost-deserted ochre hillsides.

This evening after dinner we will see a celebratory vintage port wine opened in the traditional way, then head up on to the sun deck to listen to the unmistakable sound of crickets and breathe in the scents from the surrounding valley slopes that pervade the warm evening air.

Castelo Rodrigo

Today we visit historic Salamanca, one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites on this journey, regarded by many Spaniards as their nation’s most beautiful city. Founded by the Romans, who erected its 389-yard-long bridge, Salamanca is mostly built from local sandstone that emanates a gorgeous rose-coloured glow in the sunlight. Perched on a hill on a bend in the serene River Tormes, the city is a picture of tranquillity but its history is turbulent, having been successively fought over by Hannibal, the Moors, then the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon.

Salamanca is dominated by its two cathedrals and its university. Founded in 1218, the university is the oldest in Spain and was one of the civilised world’s most important seats of study for over 400 years. The Spanish Inquisition’s records are still kept here, and as early as the 16th century it boasted some 12,000 students. Seeing its immaculately preserved lecture halls with their vaulted ceilings, it’s easy to conjure an image of Christopher Columbus addressing the learned men of the day or legal experts constructing the international laws that originate here. On arrival in Salamanca you are free to explore as you wish. You may choose to linger, admiring the ornate interiors of its cathedrals – the more recent dates from the 16th-century – or explore its tiny streets, medieval squares, traditional shops, gardens and marketplaces. The main square, the Plaza Mayor, was built in the 18th-century in Spanish Baroque style with colonnaded walkways all around at ground level, ideal for finding a shaded spot to sit and watch the locals pass by. Over lunch you enjoy a traditional flamenco show. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of the city seeing the main sights.

Salamanca Bridge and Cathedral

MATEUS PALACE GARDENS

One of the benefits of life aboard a river cruise is the sheer sense of relaxation it brings; our elegant ship slips its moorings during breakfast, after which there is plenty of time for a spot of pampering in the on-board spa, or simply watch the seamless changing of the riverbank scenery passing by from the comfort of a cozy seat in the lounge. We’re in port wine territory, where the lush hillsides have largely given way to a patterned landscape of terraced vineyards. Inland from the Atlantic, the climate has changed, too; it’s noticeably warmer and drier, while the area has a Mediterranean appearance with orangey, earthy colors replacing verdant greens.

After another superb lunch on board, we cruise into the small town of Peso da Régua, from where we visit the grounds of the splendid Mateus Palace. Anyone familiar with Mateus Rosé and its characteristic ‘squashed’ bottle will recognize the palace from the label. Whatever your opinion of the wine, it is an impressive 18th-century Baroque edifice, mirrored in its stunning pond, surrounded by landscaped French gardens.

This evening we take the short drive to the 126-acre Quinta da Pacheca for dinner. Enjoying dramatic views over the Douro, it dates back to the 18th century and is simply one of the most beautiful and distinguished properties in the region. It is also notable as being the first quinta – in 1738 – to bottle wine under the name of its owner, the aristocrat Mariana Pacheco Pereira. You have time to wander through part of the estate before sampling a selection of its finest wines at dinner.

Mateus Palace

This morning after breakfast we take a short drive to historic Lamego, home of Portugal’s sparkling wine, Raposeira, and one of the first places to be reclaimed from the Moors in the 12th century. Situated atop the hill overlooking this lovely town is the ancient Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies church, its stairways adorned with attractive azulejos, the country’s characteristic painted ceramic tiles.

By the time we return to our ship, our chef and his team will be adding the finishing touches to another delicious lunch, ready to be served as we depart for Entre-os-Rios. After lunch, there’s the perfect opportunity to take to the sun deck to enjoy the kaleidoscope of Douro views – or perhaps a spot of reading in the lounge over a cup of tea. This evening is the Captain’s Dinner, a truly memorable experience featuring exquisite regional specialties, followed by a colorful performance of traditional Portuguese folk music by a local cultural group.

Stairway to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies church

There’s a perfect opportunity to avail yourself of some of the ship’s range of five-star facilities this morning – maybe a little gentle exercise in the fitness room before heading up to the sun deck to enjoy a coffee whilst chatting with newly-made friends as our ship makes a graceful arrival in Porto once more, passing under the city’s spectacular bridges. Porto is of course synonymous with wonderful port wine and all the famous port producers are here, such as Cálem, Sandeman and Ferreira, so a visit here would not be complete without a tour of one of them. You’ll learn about this fortified wine’s fascinating history and its close British connections. Port is made from grapes still pressed in the traditional way – by feet – then lovingly matured, sometimes for decades, before you can enjoy its subtle flavors. Of course, you’ll get the chance to sample various port styles at the end of our visit.

After lunch on board we enjoy a guided tour of Porto. Strategically overlooking the Douro as it empties into the Atlantic, Portugal’s second largest city was originally a Roman town, but its wealth derived from its knowledge of the sea routes to India, with fortunes made from trading spices, silks and other fine goods. Our tour unveils some of its major and more surprising sights.

You’ll have the rest of the afternoon to explore the truly fascinating city; so perhaps return to the terraced streets of the old town and wander the sloping maze of winding, cobbled alleyways, soaking up the atmosphere whilst stopping to admire the lovely architecture, soaring bell towers, fine baroque churches, golden rooftops and beautiful tiles of this slice of traditional Portugal. Stop for a drink in a cozy café and be tempted by an array of delicious cakes and pastries – perhaps sample a pastel de nata , the traditional Portuguese custard tart.

This evening, enjoy a final dinner on board expertly served by our restaurant staff under the supervision of the maître d’ . Afterward, perhaps settle into the lounge to chat into the evening and reflect on the splendors of the remarkable River Douro – over a glass of port, of course.

Best river cruises in Porto

' src=

I already wrote about the famous 6 bridges cruise in Porto , but the truth is that a lot of people simply prefer to have a more intimate river cruise in Porto, so I decided to write this Complete Guide of the best river cruises in Porto.

Important note: Please do not mistake these with the best river cruises in Douro Valley ! The river cruises on this article that you are reading now refer to the best river cruises in Porto city.

If you are in a hurry: best river cruises in Porto – a snapshot

If you are in a hurry, these are the best options for:

  • Best river cruise in Porto with Wine and Tapas
  • Best river cruise in Porto for bachelor / bachelorette parties
  • Best river cruise in Porto for solo travellers
  • Top river cruise on a PRIVATE Yacht
  • Best river cruise with a local Fisherman!

Sightseeing Sailboat Cruise on the Douro River

bb douro sailboat

The Sightseeing Sailboat Cruise on the Douro River is one of the best river cruises in Porto for large groups (either bachelor / bachelorette parties or holidays with your extended family) because, given its size (49 foot), it can accommodate a loooot of people.

Something else that I love about this river cruise in particular is that it’s a really pretty sailboat, with a very comfortable interior room open to the outside. Beware though, that most of the time (especially when it’s not windy) they use the engines of the boats instead of the sails.

Moreover, and unlike the very touristy 6 bridges cruise, the Sightseeing Sailboat Cruise on the Douro River provides translated explanations of what you are about to see, and hence skipping the loud speakers altogether.

You can book your Sightseeing Sailboat Cruise on the Douro River online.

Mar douro river sailing cruise.

mar douro sailing cruise

The Mar Douro river sailing cruise is another great option to navigate the waters of the Douro river on a classic 31-foot motor sailor boat.

The skipper, Raul, is a really charismatic person with tons of nice stories about the Marina, the Douro river and the city itself. He is also quite generous with his Port wine servings, so I am sure you are going to end the trip feeling a bit tipsy 😀

The only thing I don’t like about the  Mar Douro river sailing cruise is that the indoors area is small, dark and not particularly comfortable, so I don’t recommend this tour for bad weather days.

Douro river party boat.

living cruise boat porto

I know how hard it is do organise bachelor / bachelorette parties not only because I organised it for some of my friends, but also because we welcome a lot of such groups on our Full day private tour of Porto 🙂 And hence it is my pleasure to introduce you to the ONLY party boat in Porto , a boat that can accommodate more than 50 people on board!

The idea is quite simple: a large boat, a DJ, and a bar. Plenty of music, no places to sit down (it’s a PARTY boat, not a place to take a nap! :D) and the opportunity to mingle with like minded travellers. Naturally, you can also make the trip private, if you wish to do so.

I think this is a great, great option for large groups of friends and yes, I have included this on one of my friends bachelorette party 🙂

There is only ONE slot everyday, so hurry up and book your party river cruise in Porto online.

Douro captain sailboat cruise.

douro captain sailboat

Douro Captain sailboat cruise is one of the most versatile river cruises in Porto. After all, it goes out into the river three times a day, every day; and it provides both group trips (for those of you that want to make new friends) and private trips (for those, like me, that prefer a private experience 🙂

Ricardo’s team is not only very friendly but also gives you lots of tips to make the most of your days in Porto, while filling your glass with a Port tonic cocktail. No wonder, then, that it is the most popular river cruise in the city!

To finish up the experience, we even got to take a quick spin out on the ocean, sailing directly into the sunset – a once in a lifetime experience that will engrave Porto in our happy memories.

Private yacht cruise with tapas.

private yacht best river cruises porto

Another fantastic yacht river cruise in Porto with wines and tapas included (again, massive foodie here!) is this Private yacht cruise with tapas .

I really like it because it is designed to be a private tour from the start, meaning that you have the undivided skippers’ attention, complete privacy AND nobody can steal the best cheeses from you 😀

Indeed, the crew (who is super nice, by the way – I really enjoyed their company!) will always make sure that your glasses are ful and that your stomach is happy. I particularly enjoyed the regional cheese from the Azores islands, and I think you will like it too 🙂

River cruise with a local fisherman.

boatman best river cruises porto

Sometimes what we need is a bit of simplicity, but mostly authenticity, on our holidays and experiences around the world. With that in mind, I decided to include on this article about the best river cruises in Porto a River cruise with a local fisherman 🙂

Indeed, Paulo and Daniel are both former fishermen and now wonderful hosts. They will tell you all about their fishing days, the Douro river, make sure your glasses of wine are always topped and take fantastic photos of you.

The boat is small (only 20 foot long!), inspired by ancient fishing boats and specially built to allow you for a closer look at the local fishing culture.

This is truly a unique experience , better suited for down-to-earth people, that you will not forget 🙂

You can book your River cruise with a local fisherman online.

Glamorous porto yacht tour.

comfort yacht porto

The Glamorous Porto Yacht Tour tour is by far the fanciest river cruise in Porto, particularly for those of you that prefer to yachts over sailing boats.

This yacht is indeed very fancy, with really nice (and comfortable) sofas both outdoors and on the covered area inside. It is suuuuper nice and makes for a very relaxing trip.

Moreover, the boat is so large that it allows for several groups to have their own private area (at the bow, the stern, or up top).

The couple that runs this river cruise is Nancy and Fernando, and precisely because this is a family business, they have different schedules for every day of the week, so I recommend you to book the Glamorous Porto Yacht Tour as soon as possible to avoid missing out. They always try to include one schedule that allows for a sunset cruise, which is great!

The only thing I didn’t super like about my trip was that they only serve ONE glass of a welcome drink (sangria), which I find a bit awkward given how generous we, the Portuguese, are with wines.

Douro river boat cruise with port wine.

boat port wine best river cruises porto

The Douro river boat cruise with Port wine is also a good option for those who want an intimate and uncomplicated boat trip, as the trip takes place on a small boat (maximum 6 people). But don’t worry because despite its small size, the boat is very comfortable and even has an awning to protect you from the sun 🙂 The skipper is called Jonas, a young man who, in addition to being very friendly, has a lot of knowledge about the city and Port wine. He will welcome you with a tasting of 3 Port wines (one of each style), which is the perfect note to start this river cruise in Porto.

Moreover, being a small unpretentious boat, it has two advantages that some of the best river cruises in Porto do NOT have: it welcomes both solo travellers (hiey!) AND pets on board 🙂

River Cruises on the Douro

Come aboard! Discover the beauty of the Douro, and explore Portugal’s soul.

Porto is the port of departure and arrival for our Douro cruises. Which means you’ll have plenty of time to stroll through the splendid old town, take in the view from Portugal’s highest church tower and sample  bacalhau , the country’s favourite dried fish. It is said that there are 365 ways to cook it. While you are there, don’t miss the opportunity to go on an excursion to Salamanca in Spain. With its 13th-century university, this impressive city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise + Best Porto Boat Tours (2024)

Are you ready to enjoy a 6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise on one of the best Porto boat tours?

The 6 Bridges Cruise is one of the best things to do in Porto, and for a good reason. Hop onboard replica Rabelo boats to experience part of the path that former wine merchants would take when bringing barrels of Port wine from Douro Valley to Vila Nova de Gaia. Or go for a more private experience on a yacht or sailboat.

Escape the city and relax while enjoying the river’s calm waters and seeing this adorable riverside town from the water. I’ve done the six bridges tour in Porto and will share with you if the 6 Bridges cruise is worth it, how long the day river cruise is, and the best Porto boat tours.

Table of Contents

What are the 6 Bridges in Porto?

There are a total of six bridges in Porto:

  • Ponte Dom Luis I

Ponte do Infante

Ponte de dona maria pia, ponte de são joão bridge, ponte de freixo, ponte da arrábida.

This list is the order in which you will see them during your river cruise. Each bridge is distinct from the next, having been built over multiple years, using a variety of architectural styles. Below is information about each of the six bridges in Porto.

dom-luis-I-bridge-porto

Ponte Dom Luis I

Ponte Dom Luis I connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and is the most famous bridge in Porto . When you see a picture of Porto with a bridge, it is almost always Ponte Dom Luis I.

A double-decker iron arch bridge, the bridge takes its influence from Paris’s Eiffel Tower . The bridge opened in 1886, designed for automobile and pedestrian usage.

Today, the upper level of the bridge is for the metro and pedestrians, and the lower level is for pedestrians and cars. I walked across the upper and lower parts of the bridge. I recommend experiencing the bridge from both the upper and lower decks.

Ponte-do-Infante-porto

Ponte do Infante is the newest bridge in Porto , built in 2003. This upper-deck road bridge, Ponte do Infante, was built to replace the upper deck of Ponte Dom Luis and is used for automobile traffic.

maria-pia-bridge-porto

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is the oldest bridge that connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, built in 1877. Its identity is often confused with Ponte Dom Luis I due to their similar shape, but they are each different.

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is a wrought-iron single-deck arch bridge built for railway traffic. Today, the bridge is no longer used and is a landmark.

Sao-Joao-bridge-porto

Ponte de São João Bridge is the futuristic looking bridge of Porto . This concrete bridge was built in 1991 for railway traffic to replace Ponte de Dona Maria Pia. Rail could travel faster on this bridge, so that was appealing. Its futuristic design allows for faster rail travel over the bridge than Maria Pia could provide.

Ponte de Freixo is the most remote and interior bridge in Porto. Built in 1995, the bridge is another road bridge for automobiles to get between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Ponte de Freixo is double-wide, allowing for road traffic to cross from both directions simultaneously.

Ponte da Arrábida bridge porto

Ponte da Arrábida is the widest of the six bridges in Porto, being 87 ft wide. Opening in 1963, Ponte da Arrábida contains six lanes of traffic plus two pedestrian lanes.

Upon its completion, it had the largest span of any concrete arch bridge in the world. In 2011, Ponte da Arrábida was noted as a National Monument.

Is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise Worth it?

If you enjoy river cruises and a quick getaway from the city, a 1 hour Douro River cruise is worth it .

Is the Douro a little touristy? Absolutely. But I would counter that a river cruise is one of the best ways to experience the riverfront and see the city of Porto from a different perspective.

Porto is known as the city of bridges , so you won’t want to miss this activity on your Porto itinerary . I recommend everyone take the short Porto river cruise at least once, especially if it’s your first time visiting Porto.

“This boat ride was incredible! Great views, a great tour, and super hospitable guides! They were very friendly and welcoming right from the start, introducing themselves and making us feel very comfortable, they answered all of our questions and shared some very interesting information about the sights we were seeing and about Porto in general. They clearly love their city and love to share that with people! They even gave us a few glasses of “green wine” and let us try a red porto. On top of all of that they also recommended other places to visit in the city as well as great local places to eat dinner (he even made the reservation for us!). This trip was truly incredible and our experience in Porto was perfect thanks to this tour! We would highly recommend and will definitely book another tour when we come back.” – Bambi G ( see more reviews )

“Our 10 night river cruise and excursions were great. But the very last day I arranged a private tour with eco tours in Porto Portugal. Absolutely wonderful and far better than the excursions offered on the ship. My mom is 86 and has mobility issues so private tours are life saving for our family. Daniela was our tour guide and he went far and above our expectations in ensuring my mom was able to see everything and experience hard to get to places like the Churchill wine tasting room. He literally backed up an extremely narrow cobblestone road inches from hitting cars and side of building to bring my mom up to the front door. During the tour, he made sure the tour guide carried a chair around for my mom to sit on as well. He was extremely knowledgeable and spoke English very well and was loud enough for all of us to hear in the very luxurious van. Bravo eco Tours! Highly recommend!” – TripAdvisor Travler ( see more reviews )

“Wow I cannot share how great of an experience my partner and I had. We were skeptical of the price as it seemed to good to be true, so we signed up and arrived early, and was ensured we were all set to go for our 3pm boat tour. We hung out at the nearby cafe until Ines came to retrieve us to start our boat ride. To our surprise, we had the whole boat to ourselves! Andrés and Ines showed us around the river and were very friendly and knowledgeable of the history of Porto. They then brought out various different wines to taste and paired them with delicioso chocolates. We had some great conversations and they even recommended some local restaurants for dinner. On the way back to dock, we were greeted with a beautiful sunset sky and docked at 5pm. Such a lovely experience, would recommend to anyone visiting Porto with a loved one or group of friends. The 6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise in Porto: What It’s Like

After scootering around Lagos and parasailing in Albufeira on Portugal’s southern coast, I was ready for more adventures in this beautiful country. Arrive early to check in for your river cruise before its departure time. After checking in, you will line up to board the boat, prepared to board when the ship is ready. Choose an open seat and get ready to sail.

Depending on the tour you choose, there may be an audio part of the tour explaining the history of the six bridges. My river cruise did not include an audio tour.

Once the boat sails, relax and feel the wind in your hair. Both sides of the boat offer a great view, as whatever you can’t see well on one side, you will see again on the return trip. I loved seeing each of Porto’s six bridges and enjoying sitting down after a long day of sightseeing.

Seeing Porto from the water is charming and well worth the ticket price. If I didn’t take the river cruise, I wouldn’t have seen half of the bridges in this adorable town. I recommend the 6 bridges cruise as part of your Porto itinerary.

porto sunset

Tips for the Best Experience with Your Porto River Day Cruise

  • Plan your river cruise close to sunset if you plan to watch the sunset from Porto’s waterfront area. Porto is known for their incredible sunsets, so you will want to plan where you will be to watch it. We took our cruise around 5 pm, then stayed in the waterfront district until the sun had set.
  • During the cruise, you cannot sit at the front of the boat as your seat , but you can take a photo with the view.
  • If you sit on the left outer edge of the boat, be prepared to be splashed. During my tour, we got splashed, but the rest of the ship stayed dry. It wasn’t a big deal for us, but other people moved after that. Something to note when choosing where to sit during your ride.
  • Book a ticket in advance to ensure your spot. If you don’t know your schedule, buy your ticket for the same day, but be prepared that not all time options may be available. I bought my tickets on the same day and had to pick a time slightly later than I intended but it worked out.
  • Tie up your hair unless you are okay with it tangling in the wind.

Take in the UNESCO-designated, 19th-century Stock Exchange Palace, seeing its famous Moorish Revival-style Arab Room, during your panoramic tour. Get a feel for this vibrant town, which is simultaneously profoundly urban and moodily romantic. Colorful multistory townhouses sheathe the hills that climb precipitously from the Douro estuary, medieval alleys snake through UNESCO-designated neighborhoods enclosed by 14th-century walls—which were erected on Roman foundations—and baroque church towers crown the hilltops. The river itself cuts through the city on its way to the ocean, marked by a series of iconic bridges along the way. It meets its final destination at Foz do Douro, a district whose name translates to "Mouth of the Douro." Our tour will take us all the way here, where you can admire the passeio alegre with its promenade inspired by French architecture, see the Castelo do Queijo that juts out over the Atlantic, and drive down Boavista Avenue.

Learn about the region’s unique geology and winemaking history—Romans planted vines in this region 2,000 years ago—at the Douro Museum. Exhibits laid out in buildings that were once home to Port winemaker Real Companhia Velha let you see how the process of making Port evolved over the centuries: You’ll find the tools of the trade and even a rabelo (a boat that carried wine from the vineyards to Porto) on display. Ready for an expedition worthy of Indiana Jones? Today’s your chance. In the 1990s, scouting for a proposed dam project on the Côa River revealed an astonishing collection of prehistoric carvings, among them horses, deer and aurochs that span eons. The oldest images etched into the schist walls around the river date to approximately 22,000 to 20,000 BC, with younger carvings ranging from the Epipaleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze ages to the 17th century—images that represent human interaction with the natural world for more than 30,000 years. Ride through wonderfully scenic countryside—the region is noted for its honey, which derives its flavor from the fields of wild lavender and the almond groves you’ll pass—to Castelo Rodrigo, the name of both a castle and the village it shelters. The castle ruins stand high atop Marofa Mountain, telling the tale of border strife and Portugal’s struggle for independence in a single structure. Construction on the citadel began in 1209 under the auspices of the king of Leon, but it became part of Portugal within a century—though its local lords sided with Spanish rulers from time to time over the next four centuries. That’s why the palace adjoining the castle lies in ruins: Outraged citizens destroyed it after its lord sided with Castile. Take in the amazing view from the ancient stone walls, then step down through the tiny cobbled lanes of the village, passing the old pillory, the Manueline church, and the town’s market square. It’s not all history, of course. You’ll also get to sample delicious local treats, such as honey, almonds, olive oil and cheeses, and a newly restored tea-house invites you to relax over a cup of tea or a cool drink.

As you journey through the hills to a local quinta, a prestigious Port wine estate and the oldest in the Douro River Valley, you will see a unique landscape that has been shaped by wine growers for two millennia. The stone terraces curving around the steep slopes hold soil that is largely the creation of human intervention: People have laboriously broken up the native silver schist stone over the centuries and turned it into usable sandy earth; it’s called “anthroposoil.” The process of producing Port wine is a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity; the steepness of the slopes requires that grape vines be tended almost entirely by hand, but the wine itself is made using the most modern techniques. You’ll tour the estate to see its stainless steel and oak vats, Boutique Winery, and the historic wine presses, before proceeding to the terrace for a Port tasting with a view over the river.

“Portugal was born here.” So the sign on the city wall proclaims. Guimarães was home to the first king of Portugal, Afonso I, who managed to win his kingdom’s independence in the 12th century from neighboring suzerains. The wonderfully well-preserved Old Town, with its unique architecture (houses here combine granite with half-timbering) and charming little plazas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; overlooking it is the grand castle that appears on Portugal’s coat of arms. Rove with your guide from the castle toward the beautiful main square, the Largo da Oliveira, and to the splendid Monastery and Church of Our Lady of Oliveira and the 14th-century Gothic Padrão do Salado. But remember that despite these historic beauties, Guimarães has the youngest population of any city in Europe, so the pedestrian area is full of lively and fun cafés and shops.

Beautiful River Cruises That Will Take Your Breath Away

Posted: January 2, 2024 | Last updated: January 2, 2024

Whether you’re considering a river cruise for the first time or you’ve been navigating the world’s rivers for years, we’ve got 28 fabulous reasons to book a river cruise – from a leisurely float down the marvelous Mekong, to a cruise along the Hudson River.

River adventures

<p>Finding alone time is increasingly easy on river cruise ships, many of which are going all out to cater to solo travelers. <p>River cruises are often seen as the preserve of couples, but change is afoot. <p>If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like <a href="https://www.vikingrivercruises.co.uk/?CreativeID=7a5f352e-f1e8-4546-91a4-c6b6ac2409c7_1&TagID=VC01_0112629_CK&utm_campaign=Brand+Defence&utm_medium=Search+Advertising&utm_term=null&utm_source=Google&gclid=CjwKCAiAoL6eBhA3EiwAXDom5twrhOZmvQs3yyVwYQQKNHOz7A6VOG0xSIMlV0Rgv1qDOEJQekESYhoCs3QQAvD_BwE">Viking Cruises</a>, which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.</p>

Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Most ocean-going cruise lines launch one or two ships a year. River cruise ships, however, take to the water much more regularly. Viking River Cruises doesn’t just lay claim to the biggest fleet (80 river cruising ships), but also the Guinness World Record for inaugurating the most new ships in a single day (14, if you were wondering).

<p>Europe’s rivers are lined with ancient cities and landmarks, but several cruise lines are delving deeper in Europe’s history by tackling a more diverse range of subjects. AmaWaterways is a great example – in 2023 its Color of Provence cruise will include a three-night visit to Paris which will focus on the city’s Black heritage, while another AmaWaterways cruise along the Rhône river will include a Black heritage tour of Marseille.</p>

<p>Because river cruising ships are smaller, the chances of having to join tour groups the size of a Glastonbury crowd are slim, and excursions are more intimate. In 2023 the line will launch a 14-day Wild Guianas To The Amazon Basin cruise, which sails along Brazil’s Guajará River, a tributary of the Amazon. <p>River cruise ships make excellent use of space, and we’re increasingly seeing this applied to windows. If you don’t manage to bag a balcony suite, don’t panic – it’s highly likely that you’ll have floor to ceiling windows. <p>Uniworld’s decision to combine sailing with luxury railway trips onboard Golden Eagle’s trains is a sign of the times – we’ll see more collaborations designed to enhance guests’ experience. <p>River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

Keen to sail along Europe’s most famous rivers but not so keen on crowds? Choose a river cruise that goes well beyond the cities on the itinerary, and you’ll be richly rewarded. For example, opt for one of the cruises that travels past Budapest to the Black Sea’s spectacular marshy delta, or along the more remote stretches of Germany’s often-overlooked Main River.

Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots

Unlike on ocean-going cruises, you won’t need binoculars to appreciate the scenery. Sign up for an American river cruise and you can sail through vast bayous, past skyscraper-filled cities and along ocean-wide stretches of the Mississippi during a single sailing, while in Europe, Germany’s UNESCO-listed castles can be easily combined with Prague’s bohemian masterpieces.

The landscape is fabulously diverse

<p><a href="http://www.croisieurope.co.uk/">CroisiEurope</a> is the only river cruise line operating on Lake Kariba in Southern Africa. <p>We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. <a href="https://www.scenic.co.uk/river-cruises">Scenic River Cruises</a> is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.</p>

Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

To start with, there are no ocean waves and currents to rock the boat. Additionally, fewer decks means less chance of feeling any movement – you’ll be closer to the hull of the ship (the part which moves least) and river cruising ships’ low-slung design means there’s minimal sway anyway. In summary? You can spend your time planning your excursions and activities rather than poring over ship plans in order to bag a cabin in the most stable spot.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

<p>River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/92727/amazing-facts-about-cruise-ships-you-might-not-know?page=1"><strong>Amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know</strong></a></p>

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

The Nile is 4,132 miles (6,650km) long. To put that into perspective, if you drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End (the entire length of Britain) you’d cover just 840 miles (1,352km). We recommend Viking’s Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise, which starts and finishes in Cairo and takes in Luxor’s Karnak Temple complex, the Necropolis of Thebes and the beautiful Philae temple complex (pictured), which is surrounded by water.

You can cruise the world’s longest river

<p>There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several <a href="http://uniworld.com">Uniworld</a> vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here. </p>

<p>One example is <a href="http://www.amadeus-rivercruises.com">Amadeus River Cruises</a>. In May 2023 the line will launch Amadeus Riva, which will have a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.</p>

One example is Amadeus River Cruises . In May 2023 the line launched Amadeus Riva, which has a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.

We’re seeing more river cruise lines offer a complimentary night in a hotel prior to setting sail, along with further opportunities to explore the embarkation and disembarkation destinations. Expect more river cruise companies to offer add-ons such as three-day city packages of Amsterdam (pictured) prior to sailings along the Rhine, or wine-themed mini-breaks prior to Loire sailings.

The added extras are getting better

We’re increasingly keen to avoid crowds, and river cruises have cottoned on to this. They’re going all out to offer cruises year-round – not just during the summer (traditionally the busiest time for river cruises), but in April and May and September and October, when there will be fewer selfie sticks and thinner crowds to contend with. Pictured is Bratislava Castle rising above the Danube River in fall.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

<p>On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) –  this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/156433/the-worlds-oldest-manmade-structures-still-in-use-today?page=1"><strong>Now check out the world's oldest man-made structures still in use today</strong></a></p>

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Set sail aboard Uniworld Boutique River Cruise in destinations across Europe, Egypt, Southeast Asia, India and Peru. The fleet’s ships have an average capacity of 120 guests and the fleet boasts one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios. Guests aboard a Uniworld cruise can expect high quality shore excursions, gourmet cuisine, hospitality and all-inclusive benefits. Plus, Uniworld was 2023’s Gold List Award winner for the Luxury Ocean Or River Cruise Brand (With Ships Under 300 Guests) category.

Uniworld’s fleet features 17 ships – with an 18th set to debut in 2025 – that are crafted to reflect the destinations in which they sail. The fully-immersive approach includes farm-to-table cuisine with local delicacies and fine wines served daily as well as all-inclusive amenities.

Sustainability is at the heart of Uniworld operations with sustainable attention given to both on- and off-shore activities. As a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration, Uniworld is committed to limiting carbon emissions while holding other travel companies and organisations accountable. Some of the other sustainability initiatives undertaken by Uniworld include reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, partnering with Leanpath to reduce onboard food waste and a ban on 60 types of single-use plastics. Guests aboard a Uniworld cruise can take part in a Make Travel Matter Experience, which is designed to advance at one of the United Nations Global Goals. Such experiences include visiting the Calcutta Rescue, meeting the women who run the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative, visiting Weinessiggut Doktorenhof for vinegar tasting and tasting the chocolates, jams and honeys at Wachau Saffron Manufactory.

Unique experiences aboard a Uniworld cruise include the Cruise & Rail itineraries which allow guests to see more of their chosen destination by combining the two travel methods. These distinct trips are currently on offer in Europe and India.

Uniworld prides itself on its all-inclusive amenities that include daily shore excursions, meals, beverages, room service, Wi-Fi, gratuities and complimentary laundries with Miele appliances. Its crew-to-guest ratio is one of the highest in the river cruise industry, making cruising with Uniworld a truly special experience.

Avalon Waterways

A trip aboard Avalon Waterways takes all of the little details into account: from ‘relaxed luxury’ to an all-inclusive experience that features complimentary bikes and the AvalonGO app for personalised travel tips. With a fleet of 19 ships, Avalon takes guests to locations across Europe, Southeast Asia, Egypt, Peru and the Galapagos Islands . Avalon Waterways ships accommodate an average of 150 guests.

Avalon Panorama Suites fit cabins with open-air balconies, ensuring an unobstructed view from the edge of the guestroom to the world beyond. These Panorama Suites offer views 30% larger than the industry average. Beds facing the open-air balcony ensure that views beyond the cabin window are still accessible while relaxing.

Guests aboard Active and Discovery cruises can choose from Active, Discovery and Classic excursions daily. With up to 28 excursion options, the Active and Discovery itineraries let travellers craft a truly unique trip. Special interest itineraries include beer, wine, history, photography, and celebrity-hosted Storyteller Series sailings.

Cuisine on Avalon ships is farm-to-fork and features locally sourced ingredients and regional wines. Avalon Waterways and its parent company, Globus, partner with several organisations like Trees4Travel and The Ocean Cleanup to ensure sustainability measures are met. Attained sustainability goals include eliminating single-use plastics on ships and in corporate offices, investing in local farmers, using shore energy at dozens of ports while docked and reducing onboard paper waste by 80%. Future plans include installing electric bow thrusters and adopting bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions by 50%.

Scenic River Cruises

Australian cruise line Scenic offers all-inclusive river getaways in Europe and Southeast Asia. Guests voyaging in Europe can choose from active excursions like Kayak on the Pinhão River, cultural activities such as taking a day excursion to the Normandy beaches or interactive excursions like shopping with a chef in Avignon. Those travelling with Scenic can choose from active, moderate and relaxed excursions. Examples include a tethered balloon ride in Siem Reap, cruising Tonlé Sap Lake and a lantern making class in Hoi An, respectively.

Unique experiences onboard include cooking classes in the dedicated cheese and wine cellars of Scenic DIamond and Scenic Sapphire. These two vessels were redesigned to better satisfy customers’ luxury needs, such as reducing the number of cabins onboard to create two large Royal Owner’s Suites. A vitality pool and expanded wellness centre were also added.

Where You'll Stay

Operated by a-rosa.

A city break sounds good. But a succession of cities sounds even better. And this is exactly what you can look forward to when you get on board an A-ROSA ship. The best crêpes in the city? Shopping streets that will set your heart racing? Or how about that quirky museum you’ve heard so much about? Everything is practically at the doorstep of your hotel room. Our berths in the major cities of Europe are mostly in the very centre of the city. So, arrive in the city, grab your handbag or backpack, and get going! Take photos, make memories, experience the city! Alone or on guided tours. By foot or on an A-ROSA bicycle. Your holiday, your decision. And as your premium hotel moves from city to city, you have everything you would expect from a premium hotel on deck – views of the spectacular landscape, delicious drinks, minigolf, a spa and a whole lot of sunshine. Whether you’re in your spacious cabin, at the pool or in the restaurant. Simply drift along and enjoy your dream holiday, which has just become a reality. The official languages on board our international ships are both English and German and our international host is on hand to give assistance.
