Best Whitewater Rafting and Guided Fishing Experience in Salida!

Family overnight with Salida River Adventures in mid July 2021, was fantastic. It was the best part of our Colorado trip. Kyle and Mike were our guides and camp chefs. The food was top notch, all cooked over a camp fire with an amazing Dutch oven brownie to round it off. We had a family of four in one of their smaller rafts. This is a small local company with big benefits. 100% would do it again.

The best river guiding company in town- all of the guides are super experienced and make the trip fun and safe! We have gone rafting on a few different trips, taking a lot of family members and everyone had a blast. The guided fishing trips are awesome, too. Caught lots of fish. SRA staff knows their stuff. This is a small local company that cares about the quality of the experience!

We loved this place. They have wet suits, helmets, and jackets available. You need them if it's cold outside. We did the two hour rapid III. It was great. I definitely want to go back for the level V rapids. Our guide was Tony. He's married with two kids, so he was very patient with our nine year old that got cold. He let her wrap up in his sweater and sit in the back of the boat. If we are ever back in this area, we will be back for sure.

Great white water action through Browns Canyon. Our guide Hank was incredible and got us safely through the many class 3 rapids. Next raft trip will be through the Numbers with Salida River Adventures.

2022 Best Colorado Rafting Trips

  • June 1, 2022

Rafting in Colorado is like surfing in California – something you have to try at least once.  The thing is, it’s so much fun, you’ll probably have to come back for more.  Colorado has some of the best rafting and most enjoyable rivers in the country for all skill levels and ages.  Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Clear Creek Canyon Rafting

Just 30 minutes west of Denver, Clear Creek offers some of the most exciting and accessible rafting in Colorado .  Fed by snowmelt along the Continental Divide, the season usually lasts from mid-May through July, making it a short but fun couple months among the class II, III and IV rapids.  There are fantastic beginner and intermediate trips that take you through photo-worthy rapids and historical remnants from where the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 began.  For those interested in more than rafting, there are also great options for zip line and aerial adventures at Colorado Adventure Center for ages 4 and up.

2. Royal Gorge Rafting

In Southern Colorado, just west of Pueblo, is the beautiful Royal Gorge.  Through the Gorge runs the Arkansas River after it’s made its way down from Brown’s Canyon in South Park.  This is an advanced, intense and technical trip for those who have had numerous rafting trips under their belt, as most rapids are class III or IV.  For the right person, it’s definitely worth the trip to get there.

3. Upper Colorado River Rafting

For those seeking a fun float (aka, chill) trip with plenty of time to swim and relax between relatively tame rapids (class I & II) then the upper C is for you.  This can be a great trip for families with younger children who just want exposure to the world of rafting, as well as quality time outdoors with the fam in the warmth, sun and wide open skies.

4. Cache La Poudre River Rafting

For those in Northern Colorado, just outside of Fort Collins, is the small but mighty Cache La Poudre River.  In French, it means “hide the powder” and along its banks was where French trappers had to bury their gunpowder after being caught in a surprise snowstorm in the 1820’s.  The Poudre is a designated Wild & Scenic River with plenty of class II, III and IV rapids to keep everyone entertained.

5. Taylor River Rafting

Just east of Gunnison and Crested Butte is the short but sweet Taylor River.  Named after one of the first gold diggers in the area, the Taylor is fed by, appropriately enough, the Taylor Reservoir, which provides consistent water flow to the small but scenic river below the Elk Mountains.  And if you also enjoy fishing for trout, the Taylor will provide a lovely adventure combo for you.

Current San Juan River Conditions

We went white water rafting in 2 rafts with a group of 4 adults and 4 kids ranging from 7-14 years old. We went end of May. I was soo worried we would freeze but they supplied us with rain shedding jackets pants and waterproof shoes! It was soo helpful. We went down the Mesa section of river and it was perfect for our group. There were plenty of fun thrills for the entire group but safe enough for the kids. We had a very timid 8 year old before we started that was begging for more by the time we were finished. I would recommend it to family and friends and we would do it again! The guides were very fun and had lots of tips for us for the rest of our vacation

The Mesa Canyon trip was a perfect fit for our 11 and 12 year olds. It was great for beginners with just enough paddling and getting wet. Ashton was a knowledgeable and fun guide and we even got to see a bear! We made memories that will last a lifetime. We will be back!

Don't just take our word for it

rafting trips southern colorado

I can go on and on about how GREAT this experience was.. I was supposed to go on a different rafting and zip lining experience somewhere else in Colorado but was unable to make it.. I was near by for vacation and I knew I had to go back to do it. I searched for “Denver Rafting” and found AVA with very good reviews and had to look into it! I originally wanted to do the “Gauntlet” as my first rafting experience but instead changed my mind and got the “mountain zip lining and 1/2 day numbers” experience. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left I had smiles, content in my heart and pictures to last a LIFETIME! Jess and Robert were such amazing guides for the zip lining trip and helped everyone especially me since it was my first time to get us in the mindset that no matter what we were safe! Even had the opportunity to race Robert on the fastest line and well experience always wins…throughout the whole experience they were very informative and just very fun to be around!! By far the Rafting was the best part.. Chris was just so helped for everyone on the raft the whole time, no matter if we had people fall out of the raft or even had to rescue a “swimmer” he was ALWAYS Calm, Cool and Collected! After having this experience, I will definitely tell everyone I know that they NEED to have this as well. With all the help throughout the whole process there will be no way that don’t have a GREAT time.

My family had a great trip with AVA! We did mountainside zip lining course near Granite, CO. Our guides Tripp and Jess were amazing! Safety first, but fun was a close second. The lines are through the trees with beautiful views of the Arkansas River and Collegiate Peaks. 6 lines took us over 2 hours to complete. There is a bit of a climb to the first line, but after that it’s easy going!

We had an absolute blast as always! Shawn and the other AVA guides were amazing. We rode with Shawn and he made the whole trip memorable for our family! He was very knowledgeable and had a ton of facts about the river and all the wildlife in the area. The Browns Canyon is a perfect family trip with enough adventure for all ages. We'll definitely be back! Thanks for everything Shawn and AVA!!!

We had a great time ziplining and rafting with AVA! The staff was super friendly and all of our guides, Campbell, Danny, and Parker were AWESOME! They made us feel safe by giving great safety instructions and were part of the good time. We enjoyed our with AVA and bought plenty of high quality merch from their apparel store. Thank you so much AVA! We can't wait to come back.

As a dad with two kids 12 and under, we had a blast on our first ever ziplining with our guides Kaden and Lizzie on 7.15.22. We were geared up well, given brief ground school instructions, and had informative and upbeat fun through their leadership; even when our lil guy had a brief moment of anxiety when stopping short due to his lighter weight. We would definitely recommend to others, loved the scenery and location, and hope to return again with more family members on a future visit.

Best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado: The Top 11 Places to Raft

Colorado has some of the most amazing rivers for whitewater rafting. With a career as a Colorado whitewater rafting guide, you get to know the areas and the rivers like the back of your hand because when you love rafting, you do it as much as you can. From gentle rapids to extreme Class V rapids, it’s an adventure like no other. Join us on a voyage as we explore 11 places that we consider the best whitewater rafting in Colorado!

The best whitewater rafting in Colorado (and our top choices)

Here's our list of the top rivers in Colorado, why we think they are great, what you need to know about rafting there, and how to get there. So, what’s holding us up… let’s jump in! Here's our raft guide curated list:

  • The Arkansas River
  • The Colorado River
  • Animas River
  • Yampa River
  • Piedra River
  • Cache La Poudre River
  • Dolores River
  • Gunnison River
  • Eagle River
  • San Juan River
  • North Platte River

While you are planning a trip, don’t forget to consider the best time to whitewater raft in Colorado! This usually falls between April and September, but different rivers can have slightly different seasons. We’ve included this information for each trip so that you can factor that into your decision-making process.

Rafting the Arkansas River

1. Arkansas River

Region: Southern Colorado

Why we love it: The Arkansas River offers a diverse range of day trips rafting from chill (Class Ⅲ rapids) to extremely epic (Class Ⅳ and Ⅴ). If you are at the right spot on the Arkansas River, you will get to raft the famous rapids of Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, The Narrows, and more. Not to mention, you will raft below the stunning vista of the Royal Gorge Bridge and cut through “The Royal Gorge Arch” which lies a thousand feet below the rim of the Gorge.

Best time to raft the Arkansas River: The rafting season spans from April-September, but the best time to raft is in late May/early June when the river is at high water. Now that’s some intense rafting!

What is the most extreme rafting experience on the Arkansas River? The most extreme rafting trip on the Arkansas River is through the Royal Gorge, especially during May and June when you can experience up to Class Ⅴ during high water. So, if you want the most extreme rafting, that’s the time and the place!

Another popular rafting trip on the Arkansas is the Bighorn Sheep Canyon, undoubtedly one of the best rafting trips in Colorado for families. It still serves up rapids that can reach Class IV at high water, but offers a more moderate trip with a lot of Class II and III rapids.

Rafting the Arkansas: If you are looking for the perfect guide down the Arkansas River in Colorado, Royal Gorge Rafting is a great option. 8 Best Rivers to Raft in Colorado

July 4, 2022 By //  by  Matt Thomas

The Rocky Mountains are well known for the epic whitewater rivers they produce, and Colorado boasts its fair share of top places to raft. From the Arkansas River to the Animas, there are more than a dozen commercially rafted rivers.

We’re highlighting some of the most popular and best rivers for whitewater rafting in Colorado . You can find these bodies of water in all corners of the Rockies. The main whitewater rafting season is from around June to September, depending on conditions. The earlier in the season the more fierce the whitewater because of the resulting snowmelt.

There are floats for everyone on these rivers, from novice and first-timers, to seasoned adrenaline junkies and families looking for a thrill. You can choose half-day or full-day trips, even some rivers provide overnight trips combined with camping. Whatever type of raft trip you’re looking for you can find it here. All necessary equipment is provided by commercial guides.

Here are among the top places to go whitewater rafting in Colorado , in no particular order:

Arkansas River

Arkansas River Whitewater Rafting Colorado

The mighty Arkansas River is the most rafted river in the state, and one of the most well-known in the country. The headwaters of the Arkansas River begin near Leadville and flows south past Buena Vista and Nathrop, to Salida, before venturing east to Cañon City, Pueblo, and the plains.

It features many epic sections and trips you can take, none more popular than the Royal Gorge . This advanced trip leads through the narrow canyon, encountering some Class IV and V rapids along the way. You’ll pass under the stunning suspension bridge and possibly by the train.

During its long journey in the Rockies, there are other notable rafting sections besides Cañon City’s Royal Gorge. Thrill seekers will enjoy tackling The Numbers by Buena Vista, before enjoying a family-friendly float down the scenic Browns Canyon , Browns Canyon, a national monument located between Nathrop and Salida.

Another beginner/intermediate section is Bighorn Sheep Canyon by Cañon City. Choose from half and full-day adventures on the Arkansas River.

Neaby Towns:  Buena Vista | Salida | Cañon City

Animas River

Animas River Whitewater Rafting Durango CO

Durango is Southwest Colorado’s largest mountain town in terms of population, and one of the biggest in the state at around 20,o00 residents. The historic town may be most known for its narrow gauge railroad, but the Animas River provides a surge of energy and recreation throughout the year.

What’s cool about the Animas River is both lazy floats and raging whitewater can be found on half and full-day trips .

The Lower Animas River runs through downtown Durango offering the easier of the two sections. It’s a family-friendly float with thrills assured by passing through the manmade rapids of the Durango Whitewater Park .

The Upper Animas River begins to the north of town near Purgatory, Durango’s mountain resort. It has the honor of being the longest, continuous stretch of commercial run Class IV-V rapids in the United States of America, 30+ miles. The thrills keep on coming!

Nearby Town: Durango

Yampa River

Yampa River Rafting Mather's Hole Colorado

Northwest Colorado’s most notorious river is the Yampa River . It’s actually the longest non-dammed river in the state. The rafting trips down the Yampa River are usually relaxing, multi-day lazy floats, perfect for a peaceful retreat and sightseeing through Yampa Canyon.

There are some whitewater thrills along the way. It meets up with the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument .

Because Vernal, UT is the most popular town around Dinosaur National Monument , many of the overnight trips meet up there and shuttle out. Rafting trips down the Yampa River provide a chance to encounter Class III and IV rapids, the best run from May through July. They are mostly multi-day camping and rafting trips, some either 4 or 5 days.

There are also some shorter half-day trips that launch out of downtown Steamboat Springs . These provide some Class II and III whitewater from May to early June.

Nearby Towns: Steamboat Springs | Dinosaur

Colorado River

Rafting Upper Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon Colorado

The Colorado River runs its course from near Kremmling to the southwest past Radium, Glenwood Springs, and onto Utah and beyond. There are many great sections of the Colorado River to raft , from family-friendly trips down Glenwood Canyon near Glenwood Springs, to super gnarly, raging whitewater in Gore Canyon .

Widely regarded as the most fierce, commercially rafted whitewater in Colorado, Gore Canyon is far from your typical float. This epic, advanced whitewater section near Kremmling is reserved only for experienced rafters with knowledgeable guides. It boasts numerous Class IV and V rapids that are monstrous when the CFS and water are high.

Downstream from Kremmling and Gore Canyon lies the Pumphouse Recreation Site . It features 3 boat launches for a variety of trips down its Class II and III rapids. It’s located a few miles upstream from Radium and its notorious primitive hot springs pool .

Much further downstream will bring you to Glenwood Canyon near Glenwood Springs. It’s really popular for groups of friends and families looking for half and full-day trips . Your guide might even lead you to primitive hot springs on the banks of the river (not Radium). Due to the long length of the river, people notoriously raft shorter sections, though this is a suitable river for overnight camping/rafting trips as well.

Neaby Towns: Kremmling | Glenwood Springs

Piedra River

The aforementioned Animas River is a tributary to the San Juan River, which passes right through downtown Pagosa Springs. It may not offer the longest stretch of river to raft, or most whitewater, but for a few months each season, it makes a great beginner, introduction-to-rafting trip.

It passes directly through Pagosa’s whitewater park downtown. Then after you have a river under your belt, tackle one or both sections of the other local river.

On top of the in-town San Juan River, there’s another tributary to it nearby, the Piedra River . It has its headwaters north of town deep in the national forest. From high up in the central San Juan Mountains, the Piedra River flows southwest of Pagosa Springs, about 20 miles west of Pagosa and 40 miles east of Durango. It joins the San Juan River there in Arboles, emptying into the Navajo Reservoir.

There are two great trips on the Piedra River: the Upper and Lower.

The Upper Piedra River is located northwest of Pagosa Springs. Trips are technical so it’s best suited for children 12 years and up. It includes numerous Class II, III, and IV rapids. If you’re feeling adventurous and really want to experience the best of Colorado, combine it with an overnight rafting trip , which hits the Lower (box of the) Piedra River the next day. Outfitters guide trips, set up tents, and cook your meals for you.

After warming up on the Upper Piedra, spend another day on the Lower Piedra River . It’s even more extreme with several huge drops during its run in a thousand-foot-deep box canyon. This section has big thrills and is suited for ages 16 and up. Piedra means “rock” in Spanish, so it. gets the name “The River of Stone Wall”. The action-packed trip down the Lower Piedra has Class IV+ rapids, descending multiple deep box canyons.

Nearby Town: Pagosa Springs

Cache La Poudre River

Cache la Poudre River Whitewater Rafting Colorado

Conveniently serving the northern front range, the Cache la Poudre River offers great whitewater rafting just west of Fort Collins. Known simply as the Poudre (“Poo-der”), this river has a limited number of outfitters guiding trips on it, so it’s much less crowded than some of the others.

You can find a couple of trips both milder and wilder for each type of rafter. They usually meet just west of Fort Collins and will shuttle you further west to your launch-in point.

Poudre Canyon is an extremely scenic place. It’s located on the Cache La Poudre-North Park Byway , a national scenic byway drive west to Walden from Fort Collins. The river itself is the only one designated a national wild and scenic river. Choose from a beginner/intermediate half day on Class II and III rapids and/or a half day of advanced Class III and IV rapids on the Poudre River.

Rafting generally starts around mid-May and goes to early September for easier floats and early August for harder ones.

Nearby Towns: Estes Park | Fort Collins

Dolores River

Dolores River Snaggle Tooth Whitewater Rafting Colorado

The Dolores River is another scenic Southwest Colorado rafting hotspot when it’s permitted. This one is a little more hit or miss though as there are only limited trips available, usually starting in April and finishing in June. Those in the know, know it as one of the top multi-day rafting trips available in Colorado and beyond. It leads you down some exciting canyons and drops during its 175-mile raftable section.

Raft the Dolores anywhere from 3 to 10-day trips . Most trips generally depart from nearby Cortez, but the longer trips meet up in Durango, departing further upstream on the Dolores River . The wilderness is remote and gorgeous along its route.

Remember the window is limited for this river, depending on the conditions and water level, so it’s generally around May. You’ll hit Class III rapids on the way, suitable for ages 10 years and older.

Nearby Town: Cortez

Clear Creek

Clear Creek Whitewater Rafters Idaho Springs CO

In Denver’s own mountain backyard of sorts, Idaho Springs offers an exciting rafting opportunity closest to the Metro. Only 30 miles west of downtown I-70 leads you to this historic former mining town. Both half and full-day trips are available rafting Clear Creek . You can arrange trips suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced paddlers.

Clear Creek is the steepest river in the state that’s commercially rafted. It flows through a narrow canyon within Clear Creek Canyon, shaping numerous technical rapids and steep drops. You’ll never know it from the highway, but this river features a wild ride. 80% of the county is public lands, so nature and wildlife are always present.

Tours meet at 9:45 a.m. and the day's activities conclude around 4 p.m. Tickets start at around $150 for children 10 and 11 and $170 for participants 12 and older. The price includes a deli-style lunch. Trips on other rivers in the state, some with more vigorous rapids, are also available, as are rafting trips in Arizona and Utah .

Mountain Waters – Upper Piedra River

Paddle through both relatively tame (Class II) and more intense (Class III) rapids of the Upper Box of the Piedra River during this daylong expedition through a tree-lined canyon. Travelers regularly describe the guides as personable, knowledgeable and helpful. Trips are offered daily in May and June. Rafters meet at the company's store in Durango – a southwest town about 25 miles north of the New Mexico border – at 9 a.m., and return there around 4 p.m. The approximately $200 tour fee includes transportation, lunch and use of equipment. Mountain Waters also offers trips through the more challenging Lower Box of the Piedra River and, when water is sufficiently high, trips through both sections as well as rafting trips on other rivers.

Performance Tours Rafting – Blue River Half Day

With mainly moderate (Class II and III) rapids, this trip is suitable for rafters of all experience levels. It winds through Boulder Canyon and features the mountain scenery of the Gore Range and the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area – a highlight for travelers. Rafters describe the guides as highly professional and skilled at navigating the rapids. Shuttles depart from the tour company's office in Frisco at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Expect to spend between 90 minutes and two hours on the water. Tickets start at $82 for adults and $80 for children. The season for this outing generally lasts from May to early July, but can change from year to year depending on the water level. Call the company before you book to check availability. 6 Places to Go White Water Rafting in Colorado

rafting trips southern colorado

White water rafting is a favorite pastime in Colorado . The season lasts from April through October, centering around when the warmth melts the snow on the mountains (May and June, mostly), raising water levels and, subsequently, the speed of the current.

Colorado has about 30 main white water rafting areas, so a nearby river and professional outfitter is not hard to find. Popular rafting cities include Steamboat Springs , Winter Park, Vail, Fort Collins, and southwestern cities like Durango and Buena Vista. Depending on where you go, you can find any level of difficulty, from Class I to Class VI (which is rarely attempted). Make sure to do your research before picking a guide and certainly don't attempt white water rafting Colorado's rapids on your own.

Colorado River

The Colorado River is one of the state’s (nay, the country's) most famous rivers. First off, this massive, 1,450-mile-long river stretches through seven different states and two more in Mexico. It's the one responsible for cutting the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

This is one of the best white water destinations in the U.S. While the most famous stretch is in the Grand Canyon, itself, rafting the Colorado in Colorado is also a must-try. The river spills through different canyons with jaw-dropping views, spanning both wild rapids and slick, calm stretches, making it a good fit for all levels of experience. Breckenridge , Grand Junction, and Glenwood Springs are popular jump-off points.

Arkansas River

The Arkansas River has a crazy 5,000-foot drop within a 125-mile span, but don't let that scare you. This popular river is appropriate for anyone, boasting Class I to Class V ratings. Its proximity to Denver makes it easily accessible, too. The views here are downright incredible, especially where it meets the Royal Gorge.

For a Royal Gorge adventure, Echo Canyon River Expeditions claims to be the leading white water destination resort in central Colorado. The 40-plus-year-old company offers all kinds of rafting adventures, from family floats on smooth waters to adventurous rides, as well as places to stay and eat.

For a full getaway, stay in glamping tents or luxury cabins at Royal Gorge Cabins . These are the first ever luxury accommodations located close to the famous gorge and river; the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is only about four miles from the cabins.

Clear Creek

Clear Creek stands out for its convenience. It’s close to Denver, right off I-70, the highway that leads to the ski resorts of Vail and Breckenridge. But though it’s close to the highway, it feels remote. You’ll likely run across the resident bighorn sheep and beavers during your adventure.

Clear Creek Rafting Co. offers day trips from mid-May through mid- to late-August. You can find all levels of rafting here, from beginner patches appropriate for kids to adventurous challenges up to Class V and some of the toughest rapids you might dare conquer, despite the water’s humble and disarming “creek” designation. Head to the former mining town of Idaho Springs for a good starting point.

Roaring Fork River

Roaring Fork River is a super-convenient stopover from Aspen or Carbondale and it packs major adventure. The top part of the river is called Slaughterhouse, (a pretty ominous nickname, and for a reason). These rapids are extreme. But the payoff is worth it. Here, you will find one of the state’s rare commercially rafted waterfalls.

Roaring Fork starts at 12,000 feet above sea level on the stunning Independence Pass. You can also set off farther downstream for a milder ride. Kayaking is popular in the lower waters.

In total, Roaring Fork winds about 70 miles and drains into the Roaring Fork Valley, ending in Glenwood Springs. Wrap up your water adventure by taking a dip in Glenwood's famous natural hot springs.

Rio Grande River

The Rio Grande River (meaning “big river” in Spanish) is the nation’s fifth largest river, stretching 1,760 miles in Colorado alone. It runs through the scenic San Juan Mountains all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The “upper box" portion of the river is best for experienced rafters—Classes III through IV—but the lower stretch is much milder and more family-friendly. A popular launching point is the small, historic city of Creede . As with many mountain towns, this was founded as a mining town.

Yampa River

If you are visiting the cheerful mountain town of Steamboat Springs in the summer, a tour down the Yampa River is essential. The Yampa River runs right past the ski village's restaurants and bars, and it even winds through the exciting Dinosaur National Monument. As the name implies, this area is packed with dinosaur remains that you can see in the rocks—it's a white water trip with an ancient bend.

Another thing that makes the Yampa so unique is it is one of the last, free-flowing tributary rivers on the Colorado River and the only free-flowing river in the state, which means it isn’t obstructed by dams and diversions. The Yampa is just over 260 miles long, and you can find rafting trips for all levels of experience, including some major challenges for the adrenaline junkie.

While you can easily find an outfitter just by walking through downtown Steamboat, one highly recommended way to arrange a rafting trip is through Moving Mountains ' concierge services.

When is the best month to go white water rafting in Colorado?

The primary season for whitewater rafting in Colorado is from June to September, depending on the weather conditions.

While this can be a busy tourist season, this is when the water level is the best for kayaking and rafting.

Going whitewater rafting too early in the season could result in fierce conditions due to rapid snowmelt.

Additionally, the Colorado snowmelt runoff creates quite cold river waters so it’s best to go whitewater rafting on a hot summer day.

For the summer adventure of a lifetime you can’t go wrong with white water rafting in Colorado. This is a great trip for anyone looking to spend a full day on a scenic river float in central Colorado.

Guide to the Grand Canyon National Park

A pproximately 17 million years ago, the Colorado River began carving its way through the Colorado Plateau, eroding the river’s sides and forming what we now know as the Grand Canyon National Park .

Today the canyon is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide at its widest point. The Colorado River lies at the bottom of the canyon, over 6,000 feet below the rim.

Grand Canyon National Park

The area surrounding the Grand Canyon was declared a National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Eleven years later the area was declared a national park, becoming one of the first national parks in the United States.

The National Park area covers 1,902 miles2 of Arizona and is included in both Coconino and Mohave counties.

Stretching from Marble Canyon on the east to Pearce Ferry on the west, the park includes the entire north side of the canyon and the eastern half of the southern rim.

The remaining portion of the south rim is part of the Hualapai Indian Reservation.

Grand Canyon Climate

Due to the high altitude of the Grand Canyon rim, weather can change quickly and is very different from temperatures at the bottom of the canyon, 4,000 feet below.

In winter, temperatures can drop as low as 18°F (-8°C) on the south rim with significant snow fall during the winter months.

Temperatures at the Colorado River rarely drop below freezing, even during the coldest months.

During the height of summer, south rim temperatures can soar to 84°F (29°C) whilst the canyon walls heat the inner canyon up to a scorching 106° F (41°C).

Temperatures on the north rim are generally a couple of degrees cooler than the south due to the higher altitude.

Driving to the Grand Canyon National Park

Crossing the Grand Canyon by car isn’t an easy feat, the Navajo Bridge crosses the eastern end of the Colorado River near Page.

The next river crossing by road is at the Hoover Dam on the Nevada/Arizona state border, located nearly 300 miles downstream.

Aside from the two river crossings, there are only four locations reachable by road to witness the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Paved roads lead to tourist villages located on both the south and north rim. Whilst Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim is accessible all year round, the higher altitude results in the closure of the North Rim resort during the winter months.

Grand Canyon West and Toroweap Overlook are the only other locations accessible by car. Both destinations involve long journeys on unmaintained, gravel roads.

However, since the opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk in 2007, the roads to Grand Canyon West are gradually being improved.

Grand Canyon Airports

The closest major international airports to the Grand Canyon are Phoenix and Las Vegas.

However, charter flights and sightseeing tours are available to/from Grand Canyon National Park Airport.

The airport is located close to the south rim, just outside the national park entrance, in the town of Tusayan.

Grand Canyon West Airport offers flights from Las Vegas into the Hualapai Indian Reservation.

Many passengers use this airport for access to the Grand Canyon Skywalk as it provides a faster and easier alternative to driving along an unpaved and bumpy gravel road.

Bus tours are offered from the airport to Eagle Point and the Skywalk.

There are no airports servicing the north rim of the canyon. The nearest airport is St. George, Utah which provides very limited services.

Other alternatives are Salt Lake City, Phoenix or Las Vegas.

Grand Canyon National Park Rafting

For those who find driving/flying to the Grand Canyon too tame a prospect, the final way of accessing one of the natural wonders of the world is by boat.

22,000 thrill-seekers per year join rafting trips along the Colorado River. Sixteen tour companies are licensed to raft the 277 mile stretch of the Grand Canyon each year and places are limited to protect the ecosystem along the river basin.

Rafting trips usually begin their journey at Lees Ferry in Marble Canyon and emerge from the canyon 8 days later at Pearce Ferry in Lake Mead.

For many, the most exciting part of the trip is riding the white water rapids whilst surrounded by 4,000 feet of vertical cliffs.

Natural Wonders of the World

No matter which way a tourist chooses to experience the Grand Canyon, they are certain to leave with fond memories of the place many describe as one of the natural wonders of the world.

Whether looking from the rim down to the Colorado River over a mile below or gazing from the river upwards at the cliffs above, the sheer size is certain to leave visitors feeling small and insignificant.

15 Super Cool Places to Camp in Colorado

From supported campgrounds to dispersed places with stellar stargazing, we found the best places to sleep outside in the Rocky Mountains

The author’s backcountry camp spot at Caribou Lake in Indian Peaks Wilderness

Heading out the door? Read this article on the Outside app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

I’ve been hiking and camping in Colorado for more than 25 years, but last summer, I went on one of the most delicious backcountry overnights I’ve ever done, literally.

The gist? I met up with a group of outdoor experts, including Stephen Starks , aka “The Mountain Chef”, at the Fourth of July Trailhead, near Boulder, Colorado . There, we strapped on packs to haul 4.4 miles up and over the Continental Divide’s Arapaho Pass to Caribou Lake—an alpine oasis at 11,147 feet. Our goal? To test a bunch of gear and cook good food in the field.

I was stoked to tag along for two reasons: first, to hike and camp with other gear junkies who love being outside as much as I do; second, the trip’s head honcho scored a coveted backcountry permit for the Indian Peaks Wilderness, providing immediate access to this stunning (but popular) 74,000-acre chunk of Rocky Mountains in my backyard.

Because Caribou Lake sits in the exposed shadow of the Divide, it experiences rapid, severe weather swings, or in other words, becomes prime gear-testing ground. And unsurprisingly, as we crested the pass, horizontal hail and wind slammed us from the west. We descended to the lake, found our camp spot, slung off our packs, and pitched our tents.

Backcountry experts noodling around at their campsite by Caribou Lake

Just as we kicked back for happy hour, a slushy hail storm rolled in. So, we scooped handfuls of ice from the seats of camp chairs and plopped them into cocktails, then Starks whipped out new MSR stoves and cook kits and began frying up Korean BBQ, followed by hot pots piled with vegetables, noodles, and sizzled strips of salty meat.Within 15 minutes, the sky cleared up into a blood-red sunset, and we stood chatting, munching, and slurping to an alpenglow show, before crashing for the night and descending the next day. (For the record: the gear held up and The Mountain Chef’s cuisine was as stellar as the views.) It was bliss.

Camping in Colorado: With Hundreds of Options, These Are Some of the Best

camping in great sand dunes national park

Beyond burly backpacking overnights, Colorado has lots of other cool ways to catch Zzzs outdoors, including at trailheads and in fancy tents. Below, I’ve highlighted some notable and new places for camping in Colorado, broken down by type, from supported campgrounds to dispersed options, and more. Some of these spots are free and first-come, first-served, some require months of planning just to snag a reservation. But pick any one of these (mostly) off-grid gems and you won’t go wrong.

My bottom line? It doesn’t matter whether I’m camping with my kids, buddies, solo, or with other outdoor pros testing pots and pans in a hail storm—as long as I’m sleeping outside, I’m set.

Dispersed Camping

sprinter van and disbursed camping along Gross Reservoir’s Winiger Ridge in Colorado

In Colorado, dispersed camping, a.k.a. primitive campsites are usually interspersed along dirt roads in public lands, outside of designated campgrounds. Opt for these options for solitude and the best stargazing around. Just don’t forget your own drinking water or filter, follow Leave No Trace Principles and pack out your trash, and know how to responsibly poop in the woods , please and thanks.

Pawnee Buttes

pawnee buttes camping in colorado

📍 Location: Pawnee National Grasslands, northeast of Ault in Eastern Colorado

Just 13 miles shy of the Wyoming border in northeastern Colorado, the Pawnee Buttes is part of Pawnee National Grasslands. Dispersed camping is allowed on the Pawnee National Grassland year-round and there are numerous primitive campsites off the network of dirt roads that are a short drive from the Pawnee Buttes Trailhead. Per usual for dispersed camping, there aren’t facilities at any of these sites, but you’ll find a bathroom and shelters at the official trailhead.

East Pawnee Butte via Pawnee Buttes Trail map

💰 The Cost: Free 📆 Book It: First-come, first-served; get details here 🔎 Don’t Miss: The main reason to drive up here is to hike the Pawnee Buttes Trail , a short but inspiring 4.4-mile out and back walk to two enormous sand and rock formations rising up from the plains. Note: It’s completely exposed to the elements, and summer temperatures easily reach 90-100°F, but early morning, spring, and fall are perfect times to visit, and camping near the trailhead gives you immediate sunrise and sunset options when it’s not as hot and bright.

Gross Reservoir / Winiger Ridge

preparing to cook dinner out of a campervan near Gross Reservoir and Winiger Ridge in Colorado

📍 Location: West of Boulder, Front Range, Colorado

This chunk of White River National Forest only a few miles west of Boulder is accessible by high clearance 4WD only and offers a handful of free, dispersed camping spots, mostly along a ridge above Gross Reservoir. There is a vault toilet at Forsythe Canyon Trailhead , but none at the campsites, which are marked with numbered posts. Although this is technically still dispersed camping, you must find an available designated site and can’t just post up anywhere. National Forest System Road 359, which provides access, is open from mid-May through mid-November during a typical year.

Forsythe Canyon Trail map

💰 The Cost : Free 📆 Book It: First-come, first-served; get details here 🔎 Don’t Miss: The reservoir itself is open for regular and ice fishing, canoeing, and SUP (but no swimming allowed).

Bear River Developed Campsites in Flat Tops Wilderness Area

Man sitting by campfire at campsite in Flat Tops Wilderness area, northwest Colorado.

📍 Location: Near Yampa, in north-central Colorado

There are 30 designated dispersed campsites along the Bear River Corridor, which is the main eastern entrance road to Stillwater Reservoir and the Flat Tops Wilderness (Forest Service Road 900). You’ll find these spots with superb views along the road between several established Forest Service campgrounds, as well as a string of lakes and trailheads. Each site has a picnic table and fire grate and a numbered post.

Stillwater Reservoir via North Derby and Hooper Lake map

💰 The Cost : Free 📆 Book It: First-come, first-served; get details here 🔎 Don’t Miss: The Flat Tops Wilderness spans the Routt National Forest and White River National Forest, with elevations ranging from 7,640 to 12,354 feet. It’s the third-largest Wilderness area in Colorado. Check out the 7-mile out and back hike to Keener Lake from Stillwater Reservoir.

Camping at Trailheads

Most Colorado trailheads don’t permit camping, but there are a handful where it’s legal to stay overnight.

The following trails allow primitive camping either in or near trailhead parking lots, providing optimal early-morning access to stunning hiking trails. Usually it’s explicitly prohibited to camp at most trailheads in Colorado, but here are a couple of interesting exceptions.

Sheep Creek Hot Springs

There are a couple of primitive, flat areas near Sheep Creek Hot Springs trailhead where overnight camping is allowed.

📍 Location: East of Durango, southwest Colorado

Okay, let’s clear this up right from the start: there are no hot springs, just some warmish algae covered spots on the Piedra River, at the bottom of this short trail into San Juan National Forest (at least, that’s what I found when I hiked and camped here in 2022). That said, it’s still a lovely walk in the woods and you can sleep outside around here. The Sheep Creek Hot Springs Trail descends a few hundred feet to the confluence of Sheep Creek and the Piedra River, then heads upstream along the latter over a flat, mossy, other-worldly forested river bank. There are backcountry campsites down there too, as well as a few car camping spots at the trailhead, all primitive with nothing but a fire ring and some downed logs to sit on.

Piedra River Hot Springs via Sheep Creek and Poison Ivy

💰 The Cost: Free 📆 Book It: First-come, first-served; get details here 🔎 Don’t Miss: Trout fishing on the Piedra River. Plus, check out Chimney Rock National Monument and the town of Pagosa Springs nearby, where you will indeed find incredible hot springs, plus some lovely shops and restaurants.

Picture Canyon

Picture Canyon picnic area in Comanche National Grassland where you can relax for lunch before exploring the area

📍 Location: Comanche National Grassland, Southeast Colorado

This lonely, remote corner of the state doesn’t get as many visitors as mountainous destinations, making it all the more reason to visit. Archeologists estimate this area has been inhabited for over 12,000 years. Evidence includes projectile points, stone tools, charred bones, and rock shelter sites. There are 13 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails throughout this section of Comanche National Grassland. Dispersed camping is permitted in Picture Canyon, both in the picnic area by the parking lot, and along several dirt roads in the area. Campers may only use existing fire rings and park in designated areas, but there are a number of obvious spots to choose from with flat spots for tents and established fire pits.

💰 The Cost : Free 📆 Book It: First-come, first-served; get details here 🔎 Don’t Miss: The variety of habitat makes this a first-rate birding spot to view Eastern Phoebe, Scaled quail, Bullock’s oriole, eagles, burrowing owls, towhees, wrens, sparrows, grosbeaks, and more. You’ll want to hike to local examples of rock art, although much of it has been vandalized; there’s an interesting crack cave near an old homestead, about a mile’s walk in.

Best National Park/Monument Campgrounds

A sunrise hike across Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, San Luis Valley, Colorado

Many campers plan their entire Colorado trip around visits to the five national parks (this includes Amache National Historical Site , which was designated a national park in February 2024) and nine national monuments distributed throughout the state, most of which maintain and manage some pretty cool campgrounds. Here are a few of my favorites.

Aspenglen Campground

Aspenglen is one of four official campgrounds in Rocky Mountain National Park.

📍 Location: Rocky Mountain National Park , near Estes Park

One of the smaller, more remote-feeling campgrounds inside Rocky Mountain National Park, Aspenglen is located on the east side of the park, about a five-minute drive from the Fall River Entrance. The campground has four tight loops with 51 sites for tents and RVs up to 30 feet, including 10 tent-only sites. Its facilities are wheelchair-accessible, and picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and tent pads are provided by the National Park Service (NPS). Flush toilets, drinking water, dishwashing sinks, food lockers, campfire programs, an amphitheater, and a riding stable are also available. Leashed pets are permitted in the campground, but don’t forget they’re not allowed on any national park trails.

Deer Mountain map

💰 The Cost: $26 per night; campers must also purchase a vehicle day pass (or have an annual NPS pass) 📆 Book It: Reserve here ; note that this campground fills up quickly when spots open up to six months in advance 🔎 Don’t Miss: Check out Horseshoe Park, the best place to see elk and bighorn sheep, as well as the 6-mile out-and-back Deer Mountain Trail , a singletrack day hike with epic views of Longs Peak, both of which are accessible from the campground. The Lawn Lake Trailhead is also a short drive away and is a strenuous 12.5 mile out-and-back hike up to the pristine high-alpine lake (which has a primitive campsite requiring an overnight permit).

Saddlehorn Campground

a tent at saddlehorn campground colorado

📍 Location: Colorado National Monument, near Fruita

Most Coloradans drive by Colorado National Monument on their way to Utah, never realizing that some canyons and rock features they seek exist just south of the interstate here. The monument protects 32 square miles of rock ridges and plateaus on the northern end of the Uncompahgre Uplift. Saddlehorn Campground, which is inside the National Monument, near the Visitor Center, is perched 2,000 feet above the Colorado River, with stunning panoramic views over the valley, including the towns of Fruita and Grand Junction.

💰 The Cost: $22 per night, plus park entrance 📆 Book It: Reserve here ; available up to six months in advance 🔎 Don’t Miss: During summer months, the campground hosts ranger-led campfire programs and guided walks. In winter, you can cross-country ski the monument’s trail system. Mountain biking and dogs are prohibited within the monument, but you can take a spin or bring your pup to most of the surrounding BLM land, worry-free. Additionally, campers may have the opportunity to join the Grand Junction astronomy club, which occasionally sets up telescopes at the campground for stargazing sessions.

Piñon Flats Campground

At Piñon Flats Campground, snag a site on the outer loop for direct views of the dunes.

📍 Location: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve , San Luis Valley, Colorado

Piñon Flats is the official campground inside the national park, located at the base of the 30-square-mile dune field, across the creek. Piñon Flats has 88 campsites, plus a section for big groups. It’s important to note you can’t collect firewood inside the national park, but the camp store, visitors center, and the Oasis store and restaurant (just outside of the park) all sell locally sourced firewood. Piñon Flats campground has two loops of sites in a piñon-juniper woodland, some with privacy. Note that all sites are small, most can only accommodate one tent, and it can be a bit noisy in the mornings and evenings, as generators are allowed from 7A.M.–8P.M. But sunrise access to the dunes makes it worth it.

Pinyon Flats Campground via Overlook Trail map

💰 The Cost: $20 per night (group sites are $65-80 per night for up to 40 people), plus park entrance 📆 Book It : Loop 1 is open year-round; the rest of the campground is open from late spring to early fall. Reservations are recommended and accepted for Loop 2 from mid-May to mid-September. 🔎 Don’t Miss : Most visitors spend a day exploring the dunes, hiking to any of the nearby shifting high points. If Medano Creek, the waterway that runs below the dunes, is flowing above ground (usually in late May and June), plan on some high-mountain “beach” time, splashing in the shallow water.

Unique Full-Service Campgrounds

Campfire Ranch Founder Sam Degenhard, in his camp hut that offers free firewood and rental tents, stoves, and other gear if you need it

These special spots sit on the camping spectrum, somewhere between forest service campgrounds and fancy glamping. They come in different sizes, with the biggest ones operating more like mini villages than remote nature experiences, but it’s that character that makes these worth visiting—especially for family reunions with large groups.

Campfire Ranch on the Taylor

Fly fishing on the Taylor River

📍 Location: Near Crested Butte, central Colorado

Campfire Ranch has several locations, including “on the Taylor,” where they offer tent, car, and van camping. They have onsite rental camping gear from leading outdoor brands and an “Adventure Concierge” that connects guests with local outfitters and activities. It’s located halfway between Crested Butte and Gunnison, about 15 minutes away from either outpost, and is surrounded by hundreds of miles of singletrack trails for day hikes, mountain biking, and trail runs.

💰 The Cost: Ranges from $67 per night for campsites to $130 per night for their “micro cabin” 📆 Book It: Season runs mid-May to early October. Most reservations can be made only 14 days in advance, though for 3+ campsites or for large groups you can reserve up to 6 months before your stay. 🔎 Don’t Miss: The Taylor Canyon is home to the gold-medal fishing waters of the Taylor River and decent whitewater for rafting and kayaking. Venture east to Taylor Park to enjoy one of Colorado’s most stunning high-alpine valleys for more fishing, boating, hiking, and off-roading adventures.

Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain

Rent a vintage Airstream at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain

📍 Location: Granby, Colorado

This huge collection of accommodations near the Colorado River, just across the road from Granby, is especially nice if you’re traveling with children or older folks. You can all stay comfortably at camping and non-camping accommodations, including RV hookups, tent sites, Airstream trailers, and covered Conestoga wagons. There are on-site amenities like a big pool, hot tubs, restaurant and bar, playgrounds, recreation center, arcade, and more. When I last stayed here with my mother and children, I was able to head out early for a long hike in Indian Peaks Wilderness, knowing that my family had plenty to do on Sun Outdoors’ campus. Pro tip: rent a golf cart to get around for added fun.

💰 The Cost : Summer rates for tent spots start at $67 per night, Airstream and wagons start at $155. Book early, especially for summer weekends. 📆 Book It : Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss : Day hike in Rocky Mountain National Park or Indian Peaks Wilderness, both to the east; soak at Hot Sulphur Springs , just to the west; or visit State Forest State Park , an hour to the north.

Dolores River RV Resort

This campground sits along on the 241-mile Dolores River, a tributary of the Colorado River

📍 Location: Dolores, Four Corners Region, southwest Colorado

This river-side oasis in southwest Colorado is the perfect stopover between Four Corners and the San Juan Mountains, and it also operates like a micro-village. Most adventurers use this location as a basecamp, as it’s uniquely situated between destinations with awesome, 360-degree outdoor access. Stay in one of 78 tent or RV sites, or in a tepee, yurt, cabin, vintage trailer, or covered Conestoga wagon. All guests can use the community bathhouses, laundry machines, and a large common recreation hall, and enjoy grub from food trucks, as well as scheduled music and social events.

💰 The Cost : Tent and RV sites begin at $29 per night, and glamping options like a covered wagon start at $62 per night 📆 Book It : Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss: Check out Petroglyph Point Trail , a 2.5-mile loop, in Mesa Verde National Park . A little closer, just drive up Highway 145 which follows the Dolores River upstream toward the San Juans and Telluride. There are ample spots to pull off and explore, or head into the little town of Dolores and walk the Dolores River Trail.

Yurt and Wall Tent Camping

Stargazing at Rustic Rook Resort. Many of Colorado’s yurt and wall tent options are located in certified “Dark Sky” areas.

Yurts and wall tents feature sturdy, semi-permanent structures like wooden frames and tent platforms, providing a comfortable shelter in a rustic, natural setting. Tent material is typically thick, waterproof canvas, and you’re often sleeping on an actual bed, as opposed to the ground.

Rustic Rook Resort

One of the tents at Rustic Rook Resort

📍 Location: Near Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, in San Luis Valley, Colorado

Just off the approach road to the national park, this new camping compound offers furnished tents, upcycled grain bins (a.k.a. repurposed farm silos) with stargazing loft domes, plus a few vintage RVs. Rustic Rook is a family owned and operated business and has a handful of fully furnished platform tents with wood burning stoves (five have in-tent plumbing, guests at the rest use a community bath house). Rustic Rook serves fresh, pre-adventure breakfast burritos each morning and s’mores around the campfire at night.

💰 The Cost: $160-$330 per night 📆 Book It: Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss: In addition to the nearby national park, the San Luis Valley has an eclectic and alluring list of attractions, including a UFO Watchtower, Colorado Gators Reptile Park , and Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa .

Dunes Desert Camp

Dunes Desert Camp’s wall tents make for ultra comfy nights outside

📍 Location: Near Mosca and Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, in San Luis Valley, Colorado

This 320-acre private property in San Luis Valley has luxury safari tents with views of the surrounding valley and Sangre de Cristo mountains. The owner, Chris Mahoney, spent 14 years guiding safaris in Africa, so he’s well versed in luxury camping and works with Narrow Ridge Outdoors to arrange guided hiking, biking, climbing, horseback riding, rafting, and 4WD tours. The tents are cozy and carpeted and have private stargazing porches. Plus, there’s a communal fire pit for grilling up tasty meals after a long day of adventuring.

💰 The Cost: Safari tents from $250 per night, campsites from $50 per night 📆 Book It: Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss: Plan to hike around Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve early, so the sand isn’t so hot. Plus, you’ll experience the post-dawn light show on the dunes. Other area activities outside of the park include taking the short hike to Zapata Falls, birding at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge , and visiting the mountain town of Crestone.

Mudita Camel’s Yurt

Yurt and camels (yes, camels!) in San Luis Valley

📍 Location: South of Alamosa, in San Luis Valley, Colorado

I found this gem on Hipcamp—a solid resource for unique campsite reservations. Mudita Camel’s Yurt is a 35-acre, high-desert property in Trujillo Canyon surrounded by public lands and national forest in a striking and remote corner of the San Luis Valley. And, boy, does it deliver as advertised: a homey yurt next to a herd of photogenic camels that the owners take care of. Why camels? This herd is tangentially related to the now extinct Camelops that once roamed this valley, mingling with wooly mammoths and other Ice Age creatures, up until about 13,000 years ago. The yurt sleeps up to four, you can bring your pets, and your hosts may or may not be making soaps and other products from camel milk when you visit. Ask for a farm tour.

Elk Creek Trail map

💰 The Cost: $137 per night 📆 Book It: Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss: Ride the narrow gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad , which follows the high passes between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. There’s also hiking in the Southern San Juan mountains (try Elk Creek Trail , a 3-mile out and back to incredible high-alpine meadows). After your train ride or hike, feast on the enormous platters at Dos Hermanas Mexican-American Steakhouse (on Main Street in Antonito).

Ask about the “Stargazing and Snuggles” experience

📍 Location: Naturita, in Western Colorado

This unique, under-visited part of western Colorado, west of Telluride, is on the site of a repurposed abandoned mining community. CampV’s mission is to “combine art, history, architecture, design, outdoor recreation, and unique spaces,” and the result is quite unique as far as outdoor stays go. Crash the night in one of the fully furnished Airstreams, a Lotus Belle or safari tent, a historic restored luxe cabin, or at the primitive riverfront campsites. There are RV hookup sites as well.

Shamrock (Y-11) map

💰 The Cost: Tent sites from $30 per night, glamping options from $155, cabins from $185 📆 Book It: Reserve here 🔎 Don’t Miss: CampV offers an on-site “Stargazing and Snuggles” experience in an old, empty water tank, where they’ll set you up with blankets, a fire, and hot drinks, and a chance to enjoy the certified Dark Sky above. You can also hike or bike the 4.1 mile out-and-back Shamrock Trail to the confluence of the San Miguel and Dolores River.

Snow Mountain Ranch Yurts

Yurt village at YMCA of the Rockies, Snow Mountain Ranch

📍 Location: Near Winter Park and Granby, Colorado

This is one of Colorado’s best family destinations, run by YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch. It’s a massive 5,000-acre affair with lodges, cabins, campgrounds, and yes, a yurt village. Each yurt sleeps six guests via one queen bed and two bunk beds, and has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire pit outside. Available from June to October, yurt amenities include a public bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets, and a dish-cleaning area.

💰 The Cost: $140 per night 📆 Book It: Reservations open the first Wednesday of January each year and fill up quickly for summer 🔎 Don’t Miss: There is an enormous menu of on-site activities right on site, both indoor and outdoor; my kids’ favorites are roller skating and the climbing wall. The craft center is also a big hit, not to mention, the campus has playgrounds, tubing hills (in both summer and winter), horseback riding, and a pool. You’re also not far from the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. In winter, use the on-site nordic ski trail system, or head to Granby Ranch, a smaller, less crowded ski area minutes away.

  • The Best Small Towns In Colorado For A Weekend Retreat

You will fall in love with them (Coloradans), their towns, and the breathtaking scenery that defines their diverse landscapes. Anyone who has ever set foot in the "Centennial State" has been wowed by its peaks (more than 50 peaks in Colorado are higher than 14,000 feet), numerous mountain lakes, and otherworldly terrain. The best way to explore Colorado, which is about the size of New Zealand, is via its delicious array of small towns. From Glenwood Springs to Ouray, discover the best small towns in Colorado for a weekend retreat.

Glenwood Springs

Grand Avenue, Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Conveniently located off Interstate 70, about 157 miles west of Denver , Glenwood Springs is a town of about 10,500 that could be the best destination for Colorado hot springs. If you are planning a weekend adventure, Hanging Lake Inn, a short, five-minute drive from downtown Glenwood Springs, should be an excellent venue for rest and rejuvenation. Visit the historic Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, once a playground for wealthy Victorians. Today, this healing wonder is the world's largest hot springs pool. Though a new kid on the block, Iron Mountain Hot Springs can be a fantastic alternative.

For a more profound experience — literally — the subterranean Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves are the only known natural vapor caves in North America. For Old West history, the Frontier Historical Museum, with its replica of a typical pioneer household, should be on the itinerary. It would be a mistake not to mention that Co. Ranch House serves incredibly delicious crab cakes that will satisfy the cravings of an empty stomach.

Arkansas Whitewater Recreation Area in Salida, Colorado

A weird and wonderful town famous for its high-country rides, Salida is an instant captivator. A bike town through and through, Salida provides access to the singletrack Arkansas Hills Trail System, which is accessible right from downtown Salida. On the south side of Salida, the Methodist Mountain Trail System includes eight trails and spans about 30 miles of awe-inspiring terrain.

Salida hosts the nation's oldest whitewater festival. It is christened FIBArk, held in June every year, and remains the town's signature event. Salida particularly fits the bill for main street connoisseurs who like sampling architectural styles and period buildings. This is because it boasts the largest historic district in the state. This is where one will find the finest collection of historically significant buildings in Colorado. We can go on and on. Here is the trick. Book a room at the Mountain Goat Lodge. You will feel like you are sleeping out in the wide-open skies.

Buena Vista

Main Street in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Buena Vista is located between the Collegiate Peaks and the Arkansas River in south-central Colorado, about 2 hours Southwest of Denver. The first port of call here should be The Surf Hotel, which is right on the scenic banks of the Arkansas River and features a great hiking trail. Partly because of the presence of the river, a first-time visitor will enjoy a world of outdoor adventure opportunities here, including white-water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing.

For a melt-in-the-mouth meal (with kombucha in the soft drinks), House Rock Kitchen serves meat that is locally sourced, grass-fed, and hormone-free. First-time visitors will enjoy exploring the Sawatch mountain range, catching some waves at Buena Vista's Whitewater Park, and snowmobiling at Monarch Mountain.

Idaho Springs

Downtown Idaho Springs, Colorado

A fun, funky, little mountain town that hosts just about 1,700 residents, Idaho Springs is another Colorado charmer that can be a perfect venue for a weekend retreat. One of its most exciting features is its proximity to Denver, which is just about 30 miles down the road. You will want to travel through Miner Street (the site of the first major discovery of gold in Colorado) and the National Historic District through to Bridal Veil Falls behind the Town Hall parking lot. Not far from here, where Chicago Creek and Clear Creek meet, George Jackson, a native of Missouri, struck gold in 1859, ushering the Colorado Gold Rush. A granite monument celebrating the discovery can serve as a fantastic photo-op.

For a well-curated glimpse into the area’s history, visit the Idaho Springs Heritage Museum, where countless artifacts tell the story of Idaho Springs in an engrossing style. For a memorable road trip, the “Oh My God Road,” connecting Idaho Springs and Central City, must not be missed. And for a cozy place to stay, the Silver Lake Lodge is as romantic as the most amplified application of the word can suggest.

Manitou Springs

Aerial View of Downtown Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Manitou Springs is a nice town just outside of Colorado Springs, about an hour's drive from Denver. You will marvel at the many fountains that produce naturally sparkling seltzer water. The spectacle is so striking that one will think she is handling carbonated water from some underground industrial venture. Just bring an empty bottle. Avid hikers should explore the Manitou Incline, which ascends on the East slope of Rocky Mountain. But it is not for the faint of heart. Some sections are as steep as 68% grade. If you do not want to break a sweat but still enjoy a heart-in-mouth adventure experience, sit back, relax, and enjoy a memorable ride on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The famous 9-mile journey transports you to Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit.

It is tough to beat the views on the way up. Other attractions include the Garden of the Gods (which is famous with hikers) and Seven Falls. In the downtown area, many buildings exude a neat Art Deco vibe and will be a pleasure to explore. Book one of the 54 beautifully appointed guest rooms at the Cliff House at Pikes Peak for a peaceful stay.

Aerial view of Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park particularly checks the weekend retreat box since it is conveniently close to Denver. It is slightly more than an hour’s drive from Denver. First-time visitors will enjoy the haunted tours provided at the Stanley Hotel, a 140-room Colonial Revival hotel that is arguably the most grand in the Estes Valley. It is known to provide tasty Rocky Mountain views.

A short distance from the main entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, Rams Horn Village Resort offers luxury cabins. Alternatively, Estes Park Resort overlooks a sparkling lake that is nice for a stroll when the weather acts right. Plus, it is conveniently located close to the town’s downtown area. A drive up Trail Ridge can only be described as “epic,” while Mills Lake’s spectacular scenery features scenic trails and heart-warming waterfalls. Of course, there is the Rocky Mountains National Park, which, with elevations of up to 14,259 feet, is one of the highest national parks in the United States.

Yeshe Rangsal Stupa, in Crestone, Colorado

Crestone is in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, a drive of about 3 hours and a half from Denver. It is considered a spiritual vortex and, therefore, ideal for those who want to explore the outside scenery — as well as the chambers of their souls. For perspective, about two dozen different religious centers dot this town, including many temples used as retreats. If you have to explore only one spiritual site, it has to be the Crestone Ziggurat, an eye-catching edifice that sits above the town and, hence, the most conspicuous.

The Crestone End of Life Project (CEOLP) is ostensibly the only place in America that offers a non-sectarian ceremony where bodies are cremated outdoors in a fiery pyre. Also, the Baca National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Great Sand Dunes National Park (which is another must-see), is home to numerous animals, including the Great Horned Owl. For a place to nest, the pet-friendly Coll House is a mystical retreat worth planning with.

Ouray, Colorado.

Secreted in the awe-inspiring San Juan Mountains, Ouray is a cute, dainty town of just about 900 residents that marks the beginning of the Million Dollar Highway, one of the most tempting drives in America. Known to be incredibly beautiful and adorable, Ouray can make for a fantastic weekend retreat, even if it is not a ski town. Jagged mountains scrape the sky and will make a first-time visitor appreciate why Ouray is nicknamed “the Switzerland of America.”

While the retail scene here is pretty standard, check out oddities such as the Gator Emporium for unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs. One will also want to travel back in time to experience pharmacy in the Wild West at the Ouray Alchemist. On the culinary front, the Outlaw, a saloon-style establishment on Main Street, is Ouray’s longest-going restaurant. Not far from the town’s main drag, you will find Ouray Hot Springs, where one can splash and play in a sulfur-free pool. For the best experience, book a room at the family-owned AlpLily Inn in the heart of historic Ouray.

The views, the crisp, fresh, playful air; the afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the summer; the smell of early-morning dew; the heart-melting mountain vistas, and the wide open skies — all combine to make Colorado one of the most worthy states for a weekend retreat. While Alexander Pope was of the view that “a little learning is a dangerous thing,” a little viewing is not. Instead of waiting for a month-long vacation that may not eventually materialize, pick a weekend and find out about the best small towns in Colorado for a weekend retreat. Here is the truth: Salida, Glenwood Springs, Crestone, and Ouray will be on that list.
