Are you looking for the nearest airport to Ravenna, Italy? There are two major Airports in Ravenna– but the Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is one of the suitable options for international travelers. 

Last year, I came across a situation quite similar to the one you’re facing now. I had to catch the 7-Night Greece & Adriatic Cruise departing from Ravenna (Venice), Italy. I was quite confused about the nearest airport to fly to Ravenna, Italy. 

Luckily, I have got the best option to reach Ravenna cruise port, and in this article, I will share my experience with you to save you time and expenses.

Closest Airport To Ravenna, Italy?

So basically, there are two major airports in Ravenna, Italy; Federico Fellini is located in Rimini (RMI), and this one is about 60 km away from Ravenna. From there, you have to grab a taxi that will take you to the Ravenna cruise port in 20 minutes. 

But unluckily, Federico Fellini airport is not a suitable option for International travelers. Like if you’re traveling from North America, you won’t get any direct flight to this airport. 

Instead of Federico Fellini, the best airport option in Ravenna for international travelers is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ), which is around 80 km away from Ravenna.

But if you’re traveling from the USA, Getting a direct flight to this airport will be easy. 

If you’re someone living around Italy, France, Monaco, Andorra, Milan, or Slovenia, the Federico Fellini airport is a suitable option. It operates some obscure domestic & International airlines like Virgin Nigeria, Flexflight, Air Berlin, Alitalia, etc.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport To Ravenna Cruise Port?

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi is a small but excellent airport to fly, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. There are not so many amenities at this airport, but you can grab a cup of coffee or a bite of famous Italian Pizza. 

Ravenna cruise port is 86 KM away from this airport. From there, you have three options to get to the cruise port– train, bus, and cab. The bus and train will get you to Ravenna town, not directly to the cruise port. However, I believe both options are more cost-effective than taking a taxi.

I like the bus option. To hop on the bus, you have to first get the train. Luckily, the train station is just a few minutes walk from the airport. Grab the train to Bologna Centrale, and from there, get a bus to Ravenna.

Finally, grab a taxi to reach the cruise port. It’s a straightforward and economical way to get there.

Federico Fellini Airport To Ravenna Cruise Port?

This airport is not minimal and is located in Rimini, also known as Rimini Airport. Once you have landed here, you have three options to get to Ravenna: bus, train, and taxi. 

There is a 70 km distance between Rimini and Ravenna, and It will take you 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Ravenna town. Once you have read there, simply get on the taxi to reach the cruise port. 

You don’t need to walk miles to grab a train; luckily, the Rimini train station is a few minutes from Federico Fellini Airport.

Rimini is one of Italy’s iconic spots, one of the most photogenic and vibrant places, I guess. If you have a couple of extra hours, I suggest exploring the “Arco di Augusto” and seeing the bustling life of the seaside of Rimini. 

Why You Shouldn’t Consider Venice Cruise Port?

Unfortunately, Venice port banned cruises that are over 25,000 gross tonnage. In March 2023, they passed this law, and now most of the major cruise lines sail from Ravenna, the nearest cruise port to Venice. 

I wish the Venice government could lift this so that I could also explore the heritage of Roman empires and some of its major attractions. 

You might wonder why not consider the airport in Venice instead of Bologna Guglielmo Marconi.

I know everyone desires to explore the iconic beauty of Venice, but there is no cruise port for giant cruise lines there. That’s why you must head over to Ravenna Cruise Port, which is 209 km from Venice Airport. 

But if you have plenty of time, you have the freedom to visit Venice and explore its beauty.

I regret not visiting Venice because I landed directly in Ravenna on embarkation day. But if you’ve got an extra couple of days, you should catch a flight to Venice and make some memories there.

But now I’m dead set on it; next time I plan a Mediterranean, Turkey, or Greece & Adriatic cruise, I’ll opt for Venice airport over Bologna Guglielmo Marconi. From there, I will leave for the Ravenna cruise port for my cruise voyage. 

Should You Stay In Ravenna, Italy?

Ravenna has a rich history; it’s a pristine and peaceful city with some historic architecture. You will encounter stunning mosaics, UNESCO World Heritage sites, vibrant streets, and some of the best ocean views here. 

I recommend you stay here for a couple of days. There is also a sightseeing canal, the Candiano Canal, that connects this Italian city to the Adriatic Sea. The beautiful quaysides and natural charm are worth seeing in Ravenna.

What Are Some Of The Attractions Worth Visiting In Ravenna? 

If you’re sailing from a Ravenna cruise port, I’d recommend arriving a couple of days earlier to soak up some of the historic vibes in the city. You know there are so many iconic architecture and fabulous mosaics from the ancient Roman and Byzantine periods. 

The first in Ravenna you should visit is Basilica di San Vitale; this Church holds attractive architecture. So many eye-catching mosaics, designs, and old paintings will make your eyes pop out. 

Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is another beautiful church that is painted with mosaics. There is also a medium that showcases the Romans’ traditions and lifestyle. This Church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine mosaics, which adorn the interior walls.

Further, the Old Town of this ancient city is also worth seeing. This town’s vibrant and bustling streets are very photogenic; here, you can capture some photos for memorabilia. The famous Ravenna Umbrella Street is in this town; the colorful hanging umbrellas are worth seeing. In addition to that, you can also savor some of the best Italian brunches and pizzas. 

Best Time To Visit Ravenna?

The best time to visit Ravenna is between April and June and between September and October; during these times, the weather is very comfortable, and one can easily explore the beauty of Ravenna. 

Spring seasons feel much more pleasant here, and I often book cruise itineraries during these times. Also, the historic colors of this Italian city become more vibrant during these summer times. That’s why I recommend you visit Ravenna in the summer rather than fall. 

How Big Is Ravenna Cruise Port?

The Ravenna cruise port is not too busy like the Ancona cruise port. But luckily, it’s just a 20-minute walk from the city center to the cruise port. Several major cruises depart from this port, like Royal Caribbean , MSC, Carnival , etc. 

The Ravenna Cruise Port is the go-to spot for cruisers heading to Venice. Many private transfer and car rental services offer direct travel to Venice.

If you’re a group of friends willing to divide the fare, I strongly recommend you go for a private transfer to save time. 

There is nothing so enjoyable at the Ravenna cruise port. Even the cafes and restaurants are located at quite a distance. So the best option is to grab a shuttle bus service from the port and move to Ravenna town.

Large cruise ships have not docked in Venice since the pandemic, and the Ravenna cruise port is the new gateway for Venice cruisers. If you’re flying in, Bologna Airport is the closest airport to the Ravenna cruise port. It’s just an hour’s drive from there to the port.

Ravenna is not on most people’s radar when it comes to a cruise port or cruise destination. In fact, it’s relatively new that the city has been chosen as a departure/arrival port since Venice has banned large cruise ships (for the most part). The Ravenna cruise port is primarily used by Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruises at the moment but is expected to accommodate more cruise lines in the near future.

We made our way down to the Ravenna cruise port via Florence and spent several days exploring the city as well as documenting everything possible about transportation options, hotels, and things to do for cruise passengers (both departing and arriving). Quick Tips for the Cruise Port in Ravenna, Italy

A few things to know right away about Ravenna & the cruise port:

• The city center is about 20 minutes from the actual location where cruise ships dock
• The city has less than 20 taxis, plan transportation in advance (more on that below)
• The Ravenna train station is only a 7-minute walk to the city center +/-
• Make sure you have WhatsApp installed on your phone to communicate with hotels & car services. This is the preferred method of contact for most local companies.

The most common question is: is ravenna the port for venice.

Venice has its own port, but has stopped allowing large ships in the lagoon / center – so Ravenna has been chosen as an alternative (as well as Trieste, Italy for some cruise lines)

Ravenna sits on the east coast of Italy on the Adriatic Sea only about 1 hour from Bologna and 2 hours and 20 minutes from Florence by train. So many people ask: is Ravenna Cruise Port in Venice? The first thing I have to say, this is NOWHERE NEAR VENICE! I hate the fact that Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines call cities like Ravenna “Venice”. When I see cruises advertised as a cruise from Venice, it just drives me insane. 

In fact, it’s so far from Venice that oftentimes people book flights into Marco Polo airport (Venice) and realize they still have another 3-hour bus ride to the cruise ship. Ravenna is located closer to Bologna and Florence than Venice. Look at a map, I beg you. THEN make your flight arrangements. Unless you really want to spend time in Venice before or after a cruise, do NOT book flights to Marco Polo Airport. 

The actual port which is Porto Corsini is slightly outside of the city.

About the Ravenna cruise terminal

The cruise terminal which is actually Porto Corsini is a 20-minute drive from the city center. The terminal itself is basically just a tented building that accommodates only 2 ships at a time keeping the city from being completely overrun by tourists. The terminal is primarily used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

How far is Ravenna city center from the cruise port?

It’s important to know that the cruise terminal in Ravenna, Italy is not really in the city. It’s about a 20-minute drive by bus, car, or taxi from Ravenna city center to the actual cruise ship dock. 

Getting to the Cruise Ship Terminal (Porto Corsini) from Ravenna

This is the single most important bit of information we can share. There are very few taxis to just ‘flag down’ and get to the cruise terminal, so planning ahead is ESSENTIAL. 

The cruise lines are really bad at communicating how to get to the ship from the city. 

Private Transfer

Some hotels will offer a private car for about 50 euros but do not RELY on this without having booked this directly with your hotel, or knowing if it’s even an available option with the hotel of your choice. 

Otherwise, the VisitRavenna website is available to book a minivan with designated time slots and pickup points (most common hotels). The starting price is 20 euros per person or 30 if you have extra luggage (per person). See the Minivan transfer option here.

Ravenna Cruise Port Shuttle 

If you arrive at the Ravenna train station on the day of your cruise departure, there are representatives from the cruise line guiding guests to a paid shuttle bus. If you’ve not made arrangements for transportation, you can get on one of these buses for approximately $15 per person, usually billed to your shipboard account. The attendant (in a yellow vest with a cruise sign) will take your details and pass them to the ship for billing.

IMPORTANT: Celebrity and Royal Caribbean are horrible with providing information about getting to the cruise ship from the city or train station! In fact, when we called Celebrity Cruises asking about how to get to the ship from Ravenna, we were instructed to go to the Bologna airport and pay for one of their very expensive bus rides BACK to Ravenna. They had zero information on a shuttle service from the train station. Mind-boggling. 

A good tip is if you are staying in Ravenna before your cruise and are staying near the train station, just walk over and get on one of their buses. It’s really easy unless you have a lot of luggage, which brings me to other local bus arrangements. 

Additionally, the tourism authority of Ravenna has created a booking system to schedule pickups from several popular hotels including the NH Hotel for only 20 Euros. This is a larger shuttle bus that makes only one stop at Grand Hotel Mattei and then directly to the port. To book in advance, visit the shuttle transfer booking page .

Taxis in Ravenna

Do not rely on a taxi to get to the cruise port in Ravenna. There are so few in the city that they are basically unavailable on cruise days unless prior arrangements have been made (which is usually only done through the hotels).

Getting from the Cruise Ship to the Ravenna train station (or city center)

If you are arriving in Ravenna and disembarking your cruise ship, the best, and really only option, is to take ship-arranged transport to either the city center, train station or your airport of choice. Due to the location of the dock and limited taxi service, it’s not possible to just flag down a taxi and head into town !

Parking at the Ravenna Cruise Port / Terminal

There is a relatively large parking lot that is nearly empty right in front of the ship and check-in “tent”. The parking is free, but be aware that it is not secure parking and doesn’t have any entry control.

What to do in Ravenna

Staying in ravenna before or after your cruise we think it’s a great choice for a day or two.

With  mosaics ,  mausoleums,  and  basilicas  everywhere you look, the Italian city of Ravenna is  full of history and culture . The city is small and quaint but with a surprising amount of activity and things to do. The city is primarily known for its stunning mosaics dating back hundreds of years. Additionally, the food and cafe scene is vibrant with no shortage of local dining options. If you’re spending a day or two in Ravenna before or after a cruise, the best option is to take that time and soak up the history with a mosaics tour (self-guided).

RAVENNA EXCURSION TIP

Cruises will often offer this type of tour as a shore excursion, but you can save a LOT of money by just purchasing a ticket locally or online. 

Don’t waste money paying for a cruise shore excursion to see the mosaics (they often charge 100 euros or more per person!). You can get a 12.50 euro ticket here .

Admission to the Diocesan sights will be allowed only by previous booking of your entrance time in each monument included in the ticket.

TIP! For some of the locations, you are requested to show up at a specific time or timeframe so they can manage traffic in the smaller spaces! Pay attention to the time on your ticket. While they were not very strict at the entry points, it may have been because it was not as busy as in peak season. 

Important! Dress Code and Etiquette

When visiting Ravenna’s religious sites, such as the  Basilica di San Vitale  and the  Mausoleum of Galla Placidia , it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for the sacred nature of these places. Both men and women should avoid wearing revealing clothing and ensure their shoulders and knees are covered. This applies to both the interiors and exteriors of these religious sites. Basically NO SHORTS and NO TANK TOPS.

Getting to Ravenna by train from any major city in the region is simple and affordable. From Bologna central train station to Ravenna, it’s only 8 euros and from Florence, it’s less than 50 euros per person (and that was using the high-speed / more expensive train between Florence and Bologna).

Additionally, cruise lines set up paid shuttle service from the main airports (Bologna and Venice).

Transport between Venice Airport and Ravenna

If you are traveling between Venice Airport and Ravenna, there are several transportation options available to you. The easy choice is to take a direct cruise shuttle from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Ravenna, which typically takes around 2-3 hours. Another option is to take a train from Venice to Ravenna, which involves a transfer to either Bologna or Ferrara. The train journey takes around 2-3 hours as well.  If you are spending time in Venice before a cruise that departs in Ravenna, you will likely end up having to return to the Marco Polo airport to get a cruise-provided shuttle. Otherwise, you’ll be on your own to get to Ravenna.

Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport – Cost & Time

Venice Marco Polo Airport is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of Ravenna. It is one of the busiest airports in Italy, offering a ton of domestic and international flight options. When traveling from Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport, you have several transportation options, including private car hire, taxi, shuttle service, and public transportation.

The travel time from Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport by car or taxi is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The cost for this option is usually around €200 to €250 (budget $300USD for this, just to be safe). Cruise company-arranged shuttle services are also available, offering a more affordable option with a longer travel time of 2.5 to 3 hours. **NOTE** That these shuttles are usually only available on the DAY OF THE CRUISE. Then board a train to Ravenna ! (Tickets can be purchased at the station or in advance)

Ravenna to Bologna Airport

Bologna Airport, also known as Guglielmo Marconi Airport, is approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Ravenna. This is a great option to fly in and out of for a cruise to/from Ravenna! Unless you have a real desire to go to Venice, look at Bologna Airport as the arrival or departure for your cruise. Trust me on this! It’s so much easier and more convenient. The journey from Ravenna to Bologna Airport can be easily completed by car, taxi, or shuttle service.

If you prefer the convenience and privacy of a car or taxi, you can expect a travel time of approximately one hour, depending on traffic conditions. The cost for this transfer option is usually around €100. You’ll be quoted €120-€150 – don’t be afraid to haggle, you’ll usually get the ride for about €100. Alternatively, shuttle services are available, providing a more affordable option with a slightly longer travel time of around 1.5 hours. The cost for a shuttle service is typically between €25 and €30. The best choice is to use a cruise company shuttle for this transfer.

Ravenna is quite small with most accommodations being Bed & Breakfast style hotels. If you prefer a more corporate or chain hotel, there is an NH Hotel within a minute’s walk of the train station and a few minutes from the center of town, however the area immediately around the hotel is not as “nice” as staying more central.

Ravenna experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and hot summers. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller compared to the peak summer months. Are there car rental agencies at the Ravenna cruise port?

Fran – There are no rental cars at the port. Your best bet is to take the cruise shuttle into town and walk to one of the few agencies that there are. There are no facilities of any kind at the actual port (or taxis unless you get lucky)

Hi Donna, there really aren’t any taxis or cars to get from the port to the city center (I think there are like 12 in the whole city). I’d be EXTREMELY surprised if NCL doesn’t have a shuttle! Even if it’s a paid “excursion” like Ravenna on your own, or something like that. Since there is no way to get into the city.

Please call NCL and find out what they are doing for that port! It would be pretty shitty if you have to pay for an overpriced excursion to get into the city – but these days, nothing would surprise me.

Great information Phil! We are cruising from Ravenna in June. After back and forth with our hotel (Hyatt Centric Murano in Venice, (who have been very responsive to my queries!), we were armed with several choices – including private car – to transfer to Porto del Ravenna. After calling Celebrity, we were offered two departure transfer times, 9.00 am and 11.00 am, on the cruise departure day from Isola Nova del Tranchetto in Venice. The cost is $58 USD per person. They also offer one departure from Marco Polo airport, but one has to be there between 11.30 and 12.30, with a possible departure of 13.00! Regards, Jim McKay

How about from Milan? I am planning to tour Milan before getting into Ravenna for cruise

Hi Janet, I know a few people that have toured Milan ahead of a cruise in Ravenna. We almost did it but chose Florence instead. You can get the train to Bologna then onward to Ravenna. It’s probably worth going a day in advance just to be 100% safe given the trains can *sometimes* be a bit flaky (pretty rare, but it happens). Private transfer will be quite expensive, but it’s possible if you want to go the day of the cruise. Expect to spend a few hours in a car and spend a couple hundred euros per person.

Any tips on parking a car at the port?

Candace, Thanks for asking – I’ll add this into the article. There is an open lot right at the terminal / check in. It’s quite large but it’s not a secure lot. It’s free, just pull up and park.

My family and I are coming into Ravenna Port on Royal Caribbean in May, 2024. We want to go into Venice and stay one night. As you were saying we did not realize that Venice is so far from Ravenna Port. There are 10 of us, 4 kids under 16 and 6 adults.. What would be the easiest and most affordable way to get there. I have looked at Viator for a private car but I am trying to figure what be best. I am 72 with some limitation on walking. Thank you for your help. please send your respond to my email.

Hi Suzanne, arriving in Ravenna, I would actually get the cruise company shuttle to Venice or Venice Airport (Marco Polo) and head into the city from there by private taxi or train. The cost of a private transfer for that many people from Ravenna to Venice would be quite a lot! You may even need two shuttles (and expect to spend 600-1000+ per shuttle). So the best way would be getting as close to Venice by the cruise ship transportation / bus as you can. You didn’t mention where you were leaving from (Are you leaving from Marco Polo? or Rome?) If you’re leaving from Rome (or even Bologna), honestly, I’d skip Venice. The time and cost it takes to get there for a single day/night may not be worth it. If you’re leaving from Marco Polo (Venice) – You’ll need to get there anyway (again, best by cruise shuttle)… I hope this helps a little! Just keep in mind the 4 hour drive to get to Venice would limit your time a lot if you’re not leaving from Marco Polo.

The Italian port of Ravenna – Porto Corsini – is now home to many cruise ships that used to start their cruise itineraries to the Mediterranean or the Greek Isles from the ports in Venice.

Venice is known as a floating city. Much has been reported about rising water levels and the ancient streets at risk of crumbling. Therefore, congestion in port traffic has resulted in some cruise ships being banned from docking in Venice.

And that has given Ravennas port, Porto Corsini, time to shine.

Previously unfamiliar to cruise guests, Ravenna recently gained much attention when the port authority awarded Royal Caribbean a contract to build a brand new terminal there.

The plan is that the new cruise port terminal will be in operation from 2024.

Until then, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are using the existing terminals in Ravenna to dock their ships bound for the Mediterranean, the Greek Isles, and beyond.

The port’s name is Port Corsini, and it is located about 15km northeast of Ravenna’s city center.

The good news is that getting to Ravenna from Venice is not difficult but allow travel time. Of course, there will be a transport cost; you should plan for this in your vacation budget. We list a few different options at different price points in this article.

Historic and charming Ravenna

Ravenna, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, is a beautiful, historic city 150 km south of Venice on the Adriatic Sea. It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to travel from Venice.

Proudly home to eight UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Ravenna is a treasure trove to explore. It is famous for its stunning Early Christian and Byzantine mosaics. And the historical center of Ravenna is a charming maze of tiny streets packed with museums, parks, cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. Shop the main streets of Via Cavour, Via Diaz, and Via Cairoli to find small artisan shops, local wines, and food.

Ravenna is the old capital of the Roman Empire, and to appreciate the history of your surroundings, it is worth booking a guided tour before you leave home. Or you can contact the official tourism board for more information and prices here .

With 35 km of coastline along the Adriatic seas, Ravenna’s best beaches and lidos include Papeete Beach and Lido Adriano, but they are at least 30 minutes by car from the city.

How to get there

The best way to get to Ravenna from Venice is by train. If you are staying on Venice island, purchase tickets from Venezia S. Lucia train station to Ravenna , changing trains at Ferrara or Bologna.

Trenitalia and Italotreno are the primary train operators in Italy. They have high-speed trains connecting you to major cities and numerous regional trains.

We recommend that you search, compare, and book train tickets in Italy before you leave home. Omio, which offers train tickets with both these carriers, is an easy-to-navigate price comparison website in English. It provides all available options for your journey and allows you to compare prices to ensure you get the best deal. And bookings can be made in your local currency. Just change the currency on the upper right corner of the website if you need to.

Alternatively, you can book tickets directly with Trenitalia or Italotreno on their website for about three months within your travel date.

You can also wait until you get there to purchase train tickets directly at the train station. The cost of a single journey between Venice Island and Ravenna for an adult is around 25 euros per person. However, note that we recommend booking before you leave home if you want a specific train time and a guaranteed seat onboard.

Outside the train station in Ravenna, taxis take you to the port. The price is about 21 euros, and the journey is about 15 minutes (longer if the traffic is heavy). If it’s a national holiday or an evening/night journey, the price will be around 26 euros. If you are staying at a hotel in the city, the train station is very central, and some hotels are within walking distance.

Where to stay in Ravenna

We recommend at least one hotel night in Ravenna before your cruise starts to ensure you do not miss your embarkation time. Ideally, you will arrive in time to spend at least one day in Ravenna before your cruise.

Airports close to Ravenna

If you prefer to skip visiting Venice and fly straight to Ravenna, the closest airports are Rimini (60km) and Bologna International (80km). Book a private transfer from the airport to your hotel in Ravenna in advance for a seamless door-to-door journey.

Alternatively, you can hop into a taxi at one of the official taxis outside the arrival terminal. The journey time is around 1hr and 20 minutes and will cost you about 150-180 euros.

How to get from Bologna Airport to central Ravenna by train

A cost-effective way to travel from Bologna Airport to central Ravenna is by train. You must first get the airport shuttle train ( Marconi Express ) or a taxi to Bologna central train station, 6km from the airport.

Marconi Express tickets from Bologne Airport to Bologne can be purchased in advance using your credit card on their website. Alternatively, if you have a contactless credit card, you can just touch your card on the validator machine at the station and touch the same card again as you exit. It automatically calculates the price of your fare.

Note that if you buy tickets there using your contactless credit card, you must each use your own credit card. You cannot touch the same card for the whole family. There is a helpful video  here  to watch which shows you how it works.

From the central Bologna train station, you can book a direct train to Ravenna . The journey time by train is a little over one hour and costs around 8 euros per person.

How to get from Rimini Airport to central Ravenna by train

If flying into Rimini airport, take a taxi to the main train station first. From there, you can book a direct train to Ravenna . Journey time is just under one hour, and a one-way ticket costs around 5 euros per person.

How to get to the port of Ravenna from the historical center

Once you are checked into your hotel, ask the hotel concierge to arrange a taxi to take you from your hotel to the port on the morning of your cruise.

The journey time is around 20 minutes. Check your cruise ticket, but you will most likely be starting your cruise from the cruise terminal in Porto Corsini. Porto Corsini is a small seaside resort located about 15km from the center of Ravenna.

Check the price with the concierge and confirm this with your driver before you leave the hotel. Remember you have your cruise luggage , so the quickest and easiest route from A to B makes sense.

If you prefer to arrange a taxi yourself, you will find the number of the local taxi company in Ravenna on their website .

Private Transfer

A private car costs around 50 euros to take you from Ravenna center to the port. Book before you leave home. You can search and book the option that suits you best before by comparing prices with a trusted supplier such as Omio or a local transfer service such as Scaioli .

Local Buses and Shuttlebuses

There are local buses from the central train station in Ravenna to Porto Corsini. Take bus number 90 from Via Maroncelli, near the train station. The ticket is available at Punto Bus, outside the station on the right (current price € 2,10).

The bus takes between 20 to 30 minutes to get to the port. Click here for the current schedule. The bus stop closest to the cruise port is the Porto Corsini Traghetto stop.

In addition, between the 14th of May and to 22nd of October, shuttle buses and minivans run from the center of Ravenna to Port Corsini. See Ravenna’s tourism website for departure times, dates, and booking information. The journey time is about 50 minutes and costs 20 euros per person.

Are you renting a car during your trip to Italy and want to drive to the port?

Porto Corsini has no guarded nor dedicated parking areas, only free parking on the street. Ravenna tourist information instead lists places where you can park your car in garages here . To get to the cruise terminal from the parking garages, use a taxi (tel. +39 0544 33888).

Note! Always check carefully regarding the pick-up and drop-off of your rental car, as many car rental offices are closed on Sundays.

However, they stop during the 3-hour journey for a comfort break. The total travel time often ends up being closer to 3.5 hours. Expect to pay around USD $ 45 per person for a transfer. Book your transfer with Royal Caribbean in advance by calling Air2Sea at Royal Caribbean using the number local to your region on their website.

Royal Caribbean only offers a transfer from the airport to the cruise port if you book flights with them arriving the same day as the cruise departs. This may change, so always check with the cruise line.

Hi Sarah, thank you for the comprehensive explanation about the cruise on porto corsini port. We will be disembarking my trip with royal Caribbean on June 15, at Porto Corsini according the schedule at 6am. We plan to go straight to Rome on that day. Knowing that it is a long journey to rome from ravenna, (also need 2 train change), we prefer to book the ticket as early as possible from ravenna train station otherwise we will be arriving very late in Rome.. Can you suggest us what time should we choose the train departing from Ravenna (to be save that we can catch the train after disembark from the ship and finding a taxi to ravenna train station), but still early enough so that we can arrive in Rome earlier. Book a flexible train ticket, so if you do arrive at the station early, you may be able to travel earlier, assuming there is an earlier train. Check the schedule when booking your train ticket, as you travel on a Saturday so train times vary. There is a journey that combines a regional train, one change in Bologna, followed by the fast train (Frecciarossa) direct to Rome, which you may be able to book. It would cut down your travel time quite significantly and get you into Rome quicker.

We will be taking post-cruise RC transportation from Ravenna to Venice in June and I have been unable to ascertain a more specific drop off point other than the Venice city Center. Can you provide any more detail as to the usual drop off location in Venice?

Thank you for contacting us. We apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry. Cruise lines usually drop off passengers at either Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, both located in Venice. Piazzale Roma is at the entrance to the historic Venice island where you can easily find buses, coaches, and taxis for onward journeys. It is also within walking distance from the train station Santa Lucia. You can search for “Piazzale Roma Venice” and then the name of your hotel or airport on Google maps to locate the exact location.

Tronchetto is a small island in close proximity. If your bus drops you here, you can purchase a ticket from the machine for the people mover, an above-ground rail system that takes only four minutes to reach Pizzale Roma for just a couple of euros.

We were due to sail into Ravenna on Royal Caribbean on 24th September but were diverted into Trieste supposedly due to bad weather which resulted in us having to take a 4 hour coach journey at 3am. However the Marella cruise ship docked successfully in Ravenna. I wondered if you had any insight into why Royal decided to divert and Marella went ahead?

Unfortunately it is difficult to get exact reasons from the cruise line as to why they made an itinerary change at short notice, and another cruise ship was able to go ahead and dock.

We recommend that you contact your cruise line and also your insurance company to see if any form of compensation is offered for the change.

I understand how frustrating it must have been to have to endure a long coach journey in the middle of the night. Explain to Royal how this affected your travel plans, and if they are prepared to offer a voucher or discount for a future sailing.

After sending you my initial comments, I clicked on more links and found the answers to my questions regarding my cruise ending at Porto Corsini and ways to travel to Venice afterwards. I’ve decided to take a taxi from Porto Corsini to the main railway station in Ravenna then buy a train ticket to Venezia Mestre. I have one question for you….I’ll buy the train ticket in advance but if I arrive at the railway station in time to catch an earlier train to Venezia Mestre, will it be possible for me to exchange my ticket for the earlier train provided that seats are available? Your plans sound good. Regarding the purchase of regional train tickets, they are good to use if you want to take a train following the time booked, according the the terms of Trenitalia, which you can read here . Click on the section called “The regional electronic ticket”.

I hope you have a great cruise vacation and good luck with your train journey to Venezia Mestre. Bear in mind the Mestre is on the mainland, and Santa Lucia train station is on Venice island itself. So depending where your hotel is located, do disembark at the correct station.

Your article is very informative! My Celebrity Cruises ends at Port Corsini and I plan to visit Venice for a few days before departing Venice Marco Polo airport. I understand the most economical way to travel to Venice is by train.

Celebrity Cruises offer a Ravenna Rail Station transfer from Port Corsini departing at 7am. It drops us off at Piazza Luigi Carlo Farini 13, Ravenna. I assume that Piazza Luigi Carlo Farini is located close to the rail station. The duration says 3 hrs but I thought you mentioned the journey time would only take about 50 minutes.

Hi Jay, and many thanks for contacting us at CruiseTrail! How exciting you have a Mediterranean cruise to look forward to soon! Many standard tours for day trips to Venice require at least 10 hours. The journey time each way is around 3 hours, depending on traffic. You will have very limited time to explore Venice once there, and I would be very concerned about making it back to the ship on time. I would doubt that an independent tour company would or could guarantee to get you back to your ship on time. Have you contacted your cruise line to ask if they offer a shore excursion to Venice you can join? That way, they would have to get you and all other passengers back to the ship on time. If the cruise line does not offer a shore excursion, I strongly advise you to visit Venice BEFORE embarking on your cruise or after you have returned from your cruise. To stay some nights at a hotel and enjoy the city stress-free is a much nicer way to experience Venice as it can be extremely crowded this time of year, so it takes much longer to get around. Thank you for your question! Royal Caribbean do offer shuttle bus transfers between Marco Polo airport and the cruise terminal. The latest information we have received from the cruise line is that you need to book the shuttle bus on the phone with them if you have booked your cruise directly with them. If you booked your cruise using a travel agent, then your travel agent will need to book the shuttle bus for you.

Expect to pay from around $50 per person, prices are subject to change. The journey time is between 2 to 3 hours depending on time of day and traffic.

Ensure that you receive updated cruise documents with your shuttle bus booking included on the documents, together with instructions on where to go upon arrival to find your shuttle bus.

We have booked a transfer from the train station to the port. Can you advise the closest parking area to the station, as we will be leaving our car for the i Ravenna for the duration of the cruise.

Unfortunately there isn’t a private parking garage in Porto Corsini, but you can park your car in one of those in Ravenna.

The journey from Bologna airport to central Ravenna is best done in two stages: 1) travel from the airport to Bologna central station 2) travel from Bologna central station to Ravenna

To get from Bologna airport to Bologna central train station, you can take a taxi (the journey is about 6 km), or you can take the Marconi Express train which goes from the airport and is clearly signposted. Buy a ticket for the Marconi Express at the ticket machines.

Once you reach Bologna central train station, check the information board for the track number of your train to Ravenna.

There are trains every hour from Bologna central train station to central Ravenna until the late evening. We recommend that you purchase a ticket in advance from Omio and choose the time that suits you best.

Hi, We are arriving in Venice 3 days before our cruise in September and thinking about renting a car at the airport then leisurely driving down to Ravenna. Is there any car rental office at Port Corsini where we can drop off a car or do we have to do it downtown and transfer? (Was looking at booking.com and did not see if that was possible)

Hi Joseph! Thank you for contacting us! There is an Avis, Europcar and Hertz in Ravenna, and other more locals car rental companies, however we do not know of any close to the port. You will need to return the car to the same rental company as you use in Venice, so do check with them if they have a depot in Ravenna and they will provide address details to you for drop off. I recommend that you also enquire if there is an additional “one-way” fee to pay on top of the rental cost, as you are picking up from one location and dropping off at another. Hello, I plan on booking a private group transfer after our cruise on Explorer Of The Seas at Ravenna. What would you recommend for a pick-up time?

Thank you for your message. Often cruise ships are scheduled to arrive quite early into Ravenna port, around 6am. You can see the estimated time on your cruise itinerary. If weather conditions (such as fog, not unusual around this region) affect the docking then it could be a little later. I would certainly do the following: 1. Check with the cruise line for advice before booking, but I would probably arrange a pick-up time around 9.30am (assuming you do not have a planned flight/train time). 2. Talk to your transfer company to find out their recommendation, as they will most likely be used to meeting disembarking passengers at the cruise port. 3. Ask your transfer company for a contact phone number to your driver, they sometimes use WhatsApp to stay in touch with passengers in case of delay. Also check that you will not incur any waiting charges if you are delayed. 4. Once you are onboard, speak to guest services and inform them of your plans, so you can request the disembarkation time that suits you. We had sailed from Venice in 2016 and found it so convenient. So when we booked a RCL from Venice we did so because of convenience. My husband is now handicapped, so you can imagine our surprise when we found out that Ravenna is 3 hrs. from Venice. RCL did not make this clear at all. Venice (Ravenna), Italy. We though Ravenna was the Pier we would leave from. RCL did not make clear that they would have a shuttle bus leaving that morning to Ravenna. We found out on a blog! We had planned to rent a car and drive to Lake Como and then leave from Milan, only learning to find out that the Car Rental Offices are closed on Sundays.

We are staying in Venice 2 nights then decided to go to Ravenna on a train and spend the night there before the cruise. But is there a bus shuttle that we can get?

Hello! Thank you for contacting us at CruiseTrail! Between the 14th of May until the 22nd of October, each Sunday a shuttle bus runs from the center of Ravenna to Port Corsini. For departure times and booking information, please refer to the section above with the headline Local Buses and Shuttlebuses . The journey time is about 50 minutes and costs from 20 euros per person. You can book your seat online and choose the date, time, and place of departure when you book. 

If you need to get to the port on any other day of the week, there are local buses that run from the train station to the port; Using the same link, you can find more information and a pdf of bus times.

If you prefer the quickest route from Ravenna to the port, I recommend asking your hotel to book you a taxi, which will take about 20 minutes. You should expect to pay around 30 – 40 euros, but please confirm the price with the taxi company or hotel before you confirm your booking and then again when you start your journey. Hello Fellow cruises,

My wife and I need a little help for our cruise to The Greek Islands and Turkey next October. I understand that the ship is sailing out of Ravenna Not Venice ,so we were wonder what is the closest airport to  Ravenna we can fly into .How Long is the drive to the port ,what is the best way to get there with luggage and possibly and good mid range hotel to stay at . We are going to fly in a day or so before.  We  can fly into Venice but it seems like a long drive from there to Ravenna to catch our ship The Constellation, I am also aware that Celleb. offers transportation at a cost to get from Venice to Ravenna is it worth it ? I know its allot to ask but just trying to figure out the way with the least amount of hassle and travel time,any help would be appreciated.

If you don't want to fly into Venice, Bologna would be your next best bet for an airport.

Bologna is probably the closest airport, but is still a distance from Ravenna. In addition to distance you may also want to consider availability of good flights and where you want to spend pre-cruise time. 

I am on Constellation in October and for now Celebrity is offering transfers from both Venice and Bologna airports as well as from Venice itself. Cost per person from Venice is $58. Unless you can put together shared transport on your roll call, you're unlikely to find anything much cheaper.

When faced with the Ravenna issue you might want to turn an inconvenient problem into a plus.  While Bologna is somewhat closer (about half the driving time) we think that Venice is worth the extra driving time for most folks.  Having been to Venice many times we find the island (and other islands in the lagoon) a fun area for browsing, walking, enjoying the fabulous atmosphere, etc.  While Bologna is worth a 1 or 2 day visit, it is not Venice :).  So we suggest that folks consider flying into Venice (Marco Polo Airport) at least 2 days prior to their cruise and enjoying the region.   If you have more days, one could plan a nice driving or train trip ending at Ravenna.  

As to exploring Venice, once folks get St Marks Square (one of the most touristy spots in Italy) out of their system they can start to explore all that Venice has to offer.  A trip out to Burano can be delightful and would easily fill a half day (longer if you couple it with a visit to Murano).  For those who have never visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum it is a wonderful place for a couple of hours.   Another option, with a few extra days, for opera lovers is to spend an evening (and perhaps overnight) in Verona in order to enjoy an outdoor Opera performance at the Arena di Verona (the largest opera venue in the world).  This does require advance planning as performances do often sell out.

I've wanted to get to Bologna for years but never seemed to have a good reason or plan to visit. The Ravenna sailings provide a good opportunity to spend a couple of days in Bologna and then at least one full day in Ravenna (also well worth the time).

I have two lasting memories of our 3 night visit to Bologna (years ago while on a driving trip).  1.  The Colonnades.  and #2.  The gypsy lady that did her best to pick my pocket at high noon in one  of the busiest squares in the city!  And yes, we foiled the lady (and I hope she still has the bruises).  Suffice it to say that it is a city for which we have no future plans to visit :).

I just spent several days with Bologna as my base.  I also always wanted to get to Bologna.  Not just Bologna, but a quick train ride gets you to Modena, Parma and Reggio Emilio for foodie fun.  Get adventurous and rent a car for a day and go to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello (I loved it).  Have a mortadella sandwich at Mo! Mortadella Lab.

I hear you -- but if those were my criteria I'd never re-visit Rome, where on my first (adult) visit, a band of gypsy kids surrounded my then DH and I and attempted to take DH's wallet -- right in the middle of the Spanish Steps -- using a piece of heavy box cardboard jammed against his waist to keep his hands away from his pants pockets. Being a street-savvy New Yorker, he did not take kindly to this and the attempt was foiled but not without me being in fear that one of more of those kids were going to go tumbling down the Spanish Steps!

I am blessed to have a DW with a 6th sense when it comes to pick pockets!  Like most frequent travelers we have learned to take routine precautions that have served us well for over 40 years.  We have never had any issues in the more common places like Rome, Barcelona and Athens.  The attempts we remember (all foiled) was the one in Bologna (where I had to get physical), a young boy in Arles, and another young guy in Istanbul (a comically bad attempt at purse snatching).  We have watched others have their purses snatched in Barcelona (some ladies still think its OK to leave a purse under their seat).

Brisighella Village

This medieval village, located halfway between Ravenna and Florence, is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

This university city is the capital of the region. Several medieval towers can be found in this city which is also known for its arcades listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Port Ravenna cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Ravenna, Porto Corsini, Italy. Ravenna is a major port city in Northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, with population around 160,000. Through Po River Delta, the cruise port (Porto Corsini) is connected to the Adriatic Sea via Candiano Canal. The city's most popular tourist attractions are its old buildings (dating from the 5th-6th-7th centuries) and also the tombs of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and Kingdom of Italy's emperor Theodoric the Great (454-526).

In mid-June 2020, RCI-Royal Caribbean replaced Venice (as homeport) with Ravenna (roundtrips from Porto Corsini). The change affected the Mediterranean schedules of the ships Rhapsody of the Seas (2021 /May 1 thru October 23) and Brilliance of the Seas (2022/ May 15 thru October 23) based on 7-day roundtrip itineraries themed as "Greece and Croatia" and "Greek Isles".

Ravenna is located approx 144 km/90 mi (road distance) to the south from Venice, or ~2,5-3 hours drive (via SS309 / Ravenna-Chioggia road) depending on traffic and driving conditions.

• The itinerary change was explained with "increased concerns regarding the future of cruising in Venice Italy due to port congestion and the ability to control port traffic".
• Customers with already purchased through Royal Caribbean airfare received complimentary shuttle bus transportation (pre- and after-cruise). Optionally was offered purchasing bus transfers from both the Ravenna cruise terminal and/or the Venice Marco Polo Airport.
• In 2022, RCI customers had to arrange the Venice-Ravenna-Venice ground transportation either by online booking a discount-priced bus transfer (with RCI) or by making private/independent travel arrangements.
• Shuttle services (between Venice Marco Polo Airport (or Tronchetto in the Venetian Lagoon ) and Port Ravenna (ship embarkation/debarkation) are provided.

In late-September 2021, RCG-Royal Caribbean Group won the tender to build and operate a new cruise terminal at Ravenna's Porto Corsini. The new terminal will be operated under a 33-year concession (from Ravenna Port Authority) by RCL Cruises Ltd (an RCG subsidiary) and is currently scheduled for completion in 2024-Q2. Read more in the port's "Terminal" section" below.

Port Ravenna

By capacity, the Port (locode ITRAN) is ranked among Italy's top 20 and Europe's top 40 cargo ports. This is Emilia-Romagna's main seaport. Its docks are located mainly on the 12-km / 8-mi long Candiano Canal (aka Canal Corsini).

The Port's offshore breakwaters are in the towns Porto Corsini and Marina di Ravenna (Adriatic Sea's largest yacht marina). The seaport as facilities has shipyards, multipurpose terminals, bulk cargo and container terminal, 2 passenger terminals (serving ferries and cruise ships ), as well as Adriatic Sea's largest yacht marina (Marinara). The cruise terminal is at Porto Corsini.

Regularly scheduled ferry lines connect to Ravenna to Brindisi and Catania (Sicily) , and also with Greece ( Igoumenitsa and Patras ).

• The Harbour is open 24-hours.
• Entrance channel's width is 300 m (984 ft), with max draft 11,5 m (38 ft).
• The port has capacity to handle vessels with LOA length 320 m (1050 ft), max width 39,5 m (130 ft) and max darft 8,8 m (29 ft). Air draft is unlimited. Anchorage is not available.
• There are two quays (total length 602 m (1975 ft) and 2 passenger terminals, of which 1 is combined for RoPax and RoRo vessels.
• As services, Port Ravenna provides pilotage (compulsory), tugboat assistance (10 tugs), salvage and ship repairs, water and provisions supply, marine fueling (heavy oil and MDO), waste disposal (garbage, special waste, bilge-sludge-grey-black waters).
• There is planned dredgings of the turning basin's northern part and also canal bed and approaching channel dredgings.

In late-November 2020, to a consortium was awarded the contract for the Ravenna Port Hub. The consortium includes DEME Group's Dredging company and Consorzio Stabile Grandi Lavori Scrl ( Rome-based construction company).

• The project's Phase 1 includes excavation of sediments (~5 million m3) in all the port's channels, deepening to 12,5 m (40 ft), reconstruction of the existing berths (total length ~6,5 km / 4 mi) and constructing a new quay (length 1 km) for Peninsula Trattaroli.
• Ravenna Port Hub project (total value EUR 197,8 million / ~USD 235,3 M) was financed by CIPE (Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning/Italy), EIB (European Investment Bank), EU (European Union) and Italy's Port System Authority.
• DEME's dredging works (contract value EUR 50-150 million) are planned to start in 2021-Q1.

When completed, Ravenna Port Hub will have capacity to handle increased shipping traffic, bigger-sized vessels (DWT 75,000 tons) and larger containerships (max cargo 8000 TEUs).

Ravenna cruise terminal

Port Ravenna has a new, dedicated to passenger ships dock at Porto Corsini. There is a regular ferry link connecting Porto Corsini with Marina di Ravenna. The cruise port is at approx 20-min drive distance from the city.

Shuttle bus port-city service is available (free for cruise ship passengers). Taxis at the terminal are also available.

(2024/NEW) Royal Caribbean Ravenna Cruise Terminal

In late-September 2021 (following Venice 's ban on large cruise ships in June), RCG-Royal Caribbean Group won the tender to build and operate a new cruise terminal at Ravenna's Porto Corsini.

The new terminal will be operated under concession (from Ravenna Port Authority) by RCL Cruises Ltd (an RCG subsidiary) and is currently scheduled for completion in 2024-Q2.

Spanning 12 hectares (30 acres), the modern facility will feature integrated landscaping, public green spaces, pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, entertainment areas and venues.

The Royal Caribbean Ravenna terminal will also have LEED certification (for water and energy efficiency), renewable energy production, top-technology recycling and waste management, shore power supply (for berthed ships), sustainable sourcing of construction materials.

On no-ship days, the Ravenna Cruise Terminal and all its waterfront facilities and amenities will be fully accessible (to both tourists and residents) and also used to house private events (meetings, conferences, presentations, art exhibitions, sports competitions, trade fairs, etc).

When completed, the terminal will allow Ravenna to be used as homeport (embarkation/debarkation port for roundtrip cruises) with annual capacity of ~300,000 passengers. For comparison, the cruise port in 2015 handled 34 ship calls with 39,964 passengers.

The project's total investment value was EUR 27,716737 million (~USD 32,54M / GBP 23,72M), including EUR 5,998829 million funded by the Ravenna Port Authority.

FROM THE NORTH

Driving on the A14 highway (Bologna – Taranto): take the exit for Ravenna , then drive towards Lidi Nord and follow the signs for Marina Romea – Porto Corsini. Once in Porto Corsini, drive along via Po and turn right to enter the area of the port.

FROM THE SOUTH

Driving on the A14 highway (Bologna – Taranto): take the exit for Cesena-Nord and follow the E45 freeway to Ravenna. Take the exit for Lidi Nord and follow the signs for Marina Romea – Porto Corsini. Once in Porto Corsini, drive along via Po and turn right to enter the port area.

You can get to Ravenna thanks to the various regional railway lines: Ferrara – Rimini ,  Bologna – Rimini and Faenza – Rimini .

To reach the Cruise Terminal from the railway station, choose a transfer from viale Farini (next to Piazza Anita Garibaldi, 300 m away from the station) or bus n. 90 to Porto Corsini (bus stop 500 m away from the terminal).

The new dock is located at the Porto Corsini waterfront, between the yacht marina, the beaches and the pine forest. A beautiful natural setting that perfectly matches with the cheerful and vibrant atmosphere of Marinara, the biggest yacht marina of the Adriatic sea. Next to the cruise ship dock you will find a beautiful beach and a small town. During siesta (1pm-4pm) the town however closes completely. If you take the small ferry (1 euro) from Porto Corsini to Marina di Ravenna you can visit the Marina and a few fish restaurants. The port is at least a 20 minute drive from Ravenna. Shuttle (sometimes free) buses are run between the port and the city. Taxis are around 20 euro one way. A few taxis are available.

You will be able to walk to the beach from the dock.

In 2024 a new terminal will be built by RCL Cruises Ltd. The new cruise terminal will showcase integrated landscaping, spanning 12 hectares, with public green spaces, pedestrian and cycling pathways, and entertainment areas for residents and visitors.

If you want to do any shopping, be aware that the shops in Ravenna observe a siesta from about 12:30 to around 4pm when the only things open are small bookshops and cafes. Sunday openings are rare.
