I’d wager those it’s not working for are stoping at the accessory position and not going to the run position. Press the start/stop 2x without your foot on any pedal- the car won’t crank without your foot on the brake. Then press accelerator 3x within 10 seconds then start stop again. It works, I promise!

Thanks for the comment, good tip!

We’ve tried this a million times, different speeds and it isn’t working, any other options?

Hi Michelle, sorry it’s not working for you.

Some other things to consider are that other factors can also play a role. For example, if the headlights are on, it may not work. Also, the emergency brake. Try to think of things like that, that could be affecting it.

Wish I had a better answer for you! Good luck!

Doesn’t work. Tried it 5 different times

Thanks. Very simple to do.

You’re welcome, glad to help!

I have been trying this and it will not go off. I just had an oil change. Is there any other tips on how to get it to turn off

Reset Oil Light Dodge Journey: The Ultimate Guide to Clearing the Oil Change Reminder

Last Updated on September 29, 2023 by Albert Duke

To reset the oil light on a Dodge Journey, start by turning the vehicle off. Then, press and hold the OK button while using the right arrow button to navigate to the “Oil Life” submenu screen.

Finally, release the OK button to reset the oil life.

Understanding The Oil Change Indicator System

To reset the oil light on a Dodge Journey, start the vehicle, turn it off, and repeat the process three times. This simple procedure will clear the oil change indicator system and ensure you stay on top of your vehicle’s maintenance needs without any hassle.

The Oil Change Indicator System in a Dodge Journey is an important feature that helps you keep track of when your vehicle needs an oil change. This system uses various sensors and algorithms to determine the condition of your oil and calculate when it needs to be changed.

Here’s how it works:

  • The system constantly monitors factors such as engine speed, temperature, and driving conditions to assess the oil’s quality.
  • It takes into account factors like mileage and time since the last oil change to determine when the oil is due for a change.
  • When it’s time for an oil change, the system will display a warning message on the dashboard, typically saying “Oil Change Required” or displaying an oil can icon.
  • Some newer Dodge Journey models may also provide a specific oil change percentage or countdown indicator.

How Does The Oil Change Indicator System Work?

The Oil Change Indicator System works by analyzing data from various sensors and algorithms to determine the condition of the oil, including factors like mileage, time since the last oil change, and engine performance. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  • The system uses sensors to monitor engine speed, temperature, and driving conditions, which helps assess the quality and condition of the oil.
  • It takes into account factors like mileage and time since the last oil change to calculate how the oil is deteriorating.
  • The data is processed by the system’s algorithm, which determines when the oil has reached a point where it needs to be changed.
  • Once the system determines that the oil change is due, it will display a warning message or indicator on the dashboard to notify the driver.

Importance Of Servicing The Oil Change Reminder

Servicing the oil change reminder in your Dodge Journey is crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of your vehicle’s engine. Here’s why it’s important:

  • Regular oil changes help keep your engine lubricated, reducing friction and wear between moving parts.
  • Fresh oil helps remove contaminants and debris from the engine, preventing the buildup of sludge and improving engine performance.
  • Neglecting the oil change reminder can lead to increased engine wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential engine damage.
  • Maintaining a regular oil change schedule can help extend the life of your engine and improve overall vehicle reliability.

Remember to always follow your vehicle’s recommended oil change intervals and utilize your Dodge Journey’s Oil Change Indicator System as a helpful tool to keep your engine running smoothly.

You all missed 2 major steps. For push starts, you press TWICE without pressing brake pedal. The car’s run light should be on. You press the acceleration down 3 times as stated. And THEN, while car is still on the run light, you press the Brake and then it should leave.

I followed the steps as shown on my 2018 Journey and it worked perfectly.

I followed these states and it worked perfectly.

For PUSH-BUTTON start models (mine is 2014) ……follow Camille’s correction above.

Thanks Camille for the correction.

About Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by FCA’s Dodge brand since model year 2009, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. With styling by Ryan Nagode, the Journey is marketed globally in both left and right hand drive. In many markets, the SUV was marketed as the Fiat Freemont. (source:wiki)

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals.

It’s not working, tried it many times. it’s quite silly that you need a Nintendo style cheat code to turn this message off. Honestly wish I could completely disable the warning all together.

I tried as well and it hasn’t worked.

About Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV produced and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Dodge brand from 2009 to 2020, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was designed by Ryan Nagode and was sold worldwide in both left and right hand drive configurations, including as the Fiat Freemont.

The Journey, internally known as the JC49, is based on FCA’s global D-segment platform and has a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short wheel base (SWB) Dodge Caravan.

The Journey first appeared at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show and then again at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were produced in Mexico at FCA’s Toluca Assembly plant, with just over 1.1 million produced previously.

The Dodge Journey was offered in two different trim levels for the 2020 model year: the SE Value as the entry-level option and the Crossroad as the “up-level” alternative. All models of the 2020 Dodge Journey were equipped with a 2.4-liter inline-four gasoline engine that produced 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and offered front wheel drive as an available drivetrain. The 3.6-liter Pentastar Variable Valve Timing (VVT) V6 gasoline engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and the All Wheel Drive option have all been taken off the market. The Journey models included seating for seven passengers across three rows, which was previously only available as an option on the base trim levels. The various options and bundles that are available have been modified. In addition, for the 2020 model year, the Journey, along with the Dodge Grand Caravan, will not be made available in states that have adopted California’s stringent emissions regulations. Dodge cited their decision to transition to a performance brand as the reason for ending production of the Journey after the 2020 model year.

Just changed the oil on my Journey after the computer told me to do so. 3400 miles. So how the F do you reset the warning? I've tried the method in the owners manual:

1. Turn key in ignition to "On" without starting the car...

2. Depress accelerator fully 3 times within 10 seconds

3. Turn key in ignition to "LOCK".

Did this like 10 freakin times to no avail. Computer kept giving me the "Oil Change Required" each time I started the car. What am I doing wrong?

I just did the same last week, and it took on the 1st try... I'm not sure why it isn't working for you.

You might be turning the key all the way off instead of into the lock position. I had a Chevy that was the same way to clear the oil change thing. I could not figure it out for the life of me. Then I realized I was turning the key all the way off.

I had the same problem, was driving me crazy..... then depressed accelerator 4 times instead of 3 out of desperation and it worked!!!!

I tried many times.... finally I did?

  • push the pedal 1, 2, 3 (and hold it down),
  • wait to see no "Oil Change" indicator
  • and then Lock.

What a stupid reset.

Be gald we don;t own a BMW. You either need a 300.00 reset tool, or take it into the dealer to get it reset. I am glad i can reset it on my own in the Journey.

I've tried everything mentioned in here at least 5 times and nothing has worked for me yet. It just keeps telling me to take it to the dealer. It seems there must be a simple reset somewhere that did not get into the manual.

If anybody has found it PLEASE lets us know.

You have to do it all the way down & slow

Yes it does work

Key "on" engine NOT running

Push accelerator down 3 times slowly within 10 seconds-it will reset I change my own oil & reset it myself no problem-unless you have a malfunction

Well after I and many others tried to get the warning to go out I took back to the dealer. The service manager came out and was going to show how easy it is. After many, and I do mean many tries, he went back to the shop and got a tech.

Tech sat down

Tech turned the key to "on"

Tech turned the key to "off"

Tech said" sometimes you have to do this twice"

Tech then repeated the above

Warning when away

I think it was scared. It may never come back again :o

We had the same problem! My husband tried 4 times and couldn't get it to work. We had to take it to the dealer who tried several times before it would reset. Very tricky. Very annoying.

I'm going to do an oil change tonight. I'll see if the reset procedures work on mine. I think, from reading the above posts, the accelerator pedal needs to be pushed ALL THE WAY DOWN completely and that the key position must be in the right position.

If it doesn't work, I'll just hook up my OBDII scan tool and do a reset there and see if it works.

(What's a OBDII scan tool anyway) :D

Okay, here's an update. I reset the oil change light the first try. It's kind of confusing because it doesn't tell you when you've successfully reset it so I'm sitting there wondering whether or not it actually worked or not.

Anyway, here's the exact procedure I followed:

1. Insert key. turn to ON position. Watch gauges do their self test.

2. Press accelerator pedal all the way down until it hits the stopper. Do this 3 times... one second apart each time. You do not need to slam the pedal.

3. After you've pressed the pedal for the third time. Wait a second.

4. Turn key back to Lock position.

5. Sit and wonder if it worked. take key out.

6. Put key back in, start car. check to see if oil reset indicator shows up.

That worked for me.

OBDII scan tool is a device that hooks up to your vehicle that can read any problem codes that are generated by your car's computer. Codes that normally show up as a check engine light on your dashboard. The scan tool has the ability to clear the codes, which resets the check engine light. If the problem is not fixed, however, the code will be thrown again, which will cause the check engine light to come on again.

As for the oil change, it's probably the easiest one I've done in a while. The oil filter is in a super easily accessible location. My other car, a japanese model, has the oil filter in an extremely hard to access location. Below the intake manifold and just above the exhaust manifold. Hence, I have to wait until the car cools down before I can change the oil. And because it's hard to access, some of the oil drains out of the filter while I'm trying to snake it out of the engine compartment... creating a huge mess. Argh!

My wife had the Journey in for an oil change, and when she came home she told me that the "Change Oil" indication was still there. So out I go with manual in hand for about an hour, and it would not reset??

I looked at the receipt from the dealer and noticed that the oil quantity was half a litre less than every other oil change.

Took it to the dealer the next day and showed him the oil quantity, and they added the difference, and voila, I was able to reset the oil change indicator first try??

Is it possible that it will not reset if the oil level is not correct after the oil is dumped and refilled?

If you were to change your oil at home, and you were parked on a sloped driveway, maybe it wouldn't reset?

Any thoughts??

It sounds logical, I have taken my Journey to the dealer for my oil changes. I use RP and just pay them for the change and filter. With the lifetime warranty it is best to keep a nice paper trail

I am thinking of purchasing an OBDII scan tool. Which one do you have and have you found it useful? Where is the port for it on the Dodge Journey? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

How is an ordinary layman supposed to know stuff like this? It happened to me last month and I took it to the dealer and they fixed it but I didn't see how he did it. These vehicles of today are getting so you really have to know what you are doing to work on your vehicle. You even have to know how to run a computer on your car. And the hourly fees keep going up!

Yeah sometimes my dealer forgets to reset mine as well, and I can never remember how to do it. Luckily the procedure is in the owners manual.

This proceedure seemed to work for me and clear the message on my 2010 RT AWD

a small piece of painter's masking tape over the indicator works too. Write the mileage on it for the next the oil change and when you get to that reading remove the tape...voila - the indicator says it is time to change the oil.

Then repeat.

  • 1 year later...

Hi all, many thanks ... The procedure worked at the first try!

Not sure why it doesn't work. I just tried it on my wife's Journey, and it worked first time.

Dodge Journey low oil pressure light is on – causes and how to reset

The low oil pressure warning light is one of the most important indicators on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey. It warns you when your engine is not receiving enough oil pressure, which can cause serious damage to your vehicle’s engine if left unaddressed. In this article, we’ll explore potential causes and provide tips on how to fix them so that you can keep your Journey running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

Dodge Journey

1. Low oil level

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

When the oil level is low, the oil pump may not be able to generate enough pressure to properly lubricate the engine components, leading to decreased oil pressure and potentially causing engine damage. In this situation, the low oil pressure warning light will turn on to alert the driver to the issue.

Check oil level

If the low oil pressure warning light turns on, it is important to stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and check the oil level. If the oil level is low in your Journey, you should add oil immediately to prevent potential engine damage.

2. Wrong oil viscosity

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

Oil is too thick, or too thin

Using oil with a viscosity that is too thick can cause issues with oil flow and lubrication, leading to increased engine wear and decreased fuel efficiency. On the other hand, using oil with a viscosity that is too thin can lead to decreased engine protection, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased oil consumption.

Verify the oil viscosity for your engine

To prevent issues with the wrong oil viscosity, it is important to refer to the owner’s manual or consult with a qualified mechanic to determine the correct oil viscosity for your vehicle. When changing the oil, be sure to use oil with the correct viscosity rating and type recommended by the manufacturer.

If you suspect that the wrong oil viscosity has been used in your vehicle, it is important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

3. Oil pressure sensor malfunction

A bad oil pressure sensor can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in your Journey. The oil pressure sensor is responsible for monitoring the oil pressure and sending a signal to the vehicle’s computer, which in turn illuminates the warning light on the dashboard if the oil pressure drops below a certain level.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

If the oil pressure sensor is malfunctioning, it may send a false signal to the vehicle’s computer, causing the low oil pressure warning light to turn on even if the oil pressure is actually within a safe range. Alternatively, a faulty sensor may not send a signal at all, causing the warning light to remain off even if the oil pressure is dangerously low.

How to check a faulty oil pressure sensor

If the oil pressure sensor is malfunctioning, it may trigger an OBD fault code in your vehicle’s engine control module (ECM). This fault code can be read using a diagnostic scanner or code reader, and will provide information about the specific nature of the issue with the oil pressure sensor.

Some common fault codes that may be associated with a faulty oil pressure sensor include:

  • P0520: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction
  • P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance
  • P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Voltage
  • P0523: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit High Voltage

If you receive an OBD fault code related to the oil pressure sensor, it is important to have the issue diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. A faulty sensor can lead to inaccurate readings and potential engine damage if the oil pressure drops too low.

4. Faulty oil pump

A faulty oil pump can also cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in your Dodge Journey. The oil pump is responsible for circulating the engine oil throughout the engine, providing lubrication and cooling to the various components.

If the oil pump is not functioning properly, it may not be able to generate enough pressure to properly circulate the oil through the engine. This can result in decreased oil pressure, which can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

Some signs of a faulty oil pump include engine noise, decreased oil pressure, and oil pressure fluctuations.

Ignoring a faulty oil pump can lead to potential engine damage if the engine is not receiving adequate lubrication and cooling. It is important to address any issues with the oil pump as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the engine.

5. Oil pressure relief valve stuck open

If the oil pressure relief valve is stuck open in the engine of your Dodge Journey, it can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on. The oil pressure relief valve is designed to regulate the oil pressure in the engine by opening and closing as needed to maintain the appropriate level of pressure.

Oil flows too freely

If the valve becomes stuck open, it can allow the oil to flow too freely through the system, which can result in a decrease in oil pressure. This decrease in oil pressure can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

6. Clogged oil pickup screen

A clogged oil pickup screen is another possible cause of the low oil pressure warning light turning on in your Journey. The oil pickup screen is located at the bottom of the oil pan and is responsible for filtering out any debris or contaminants that may be present in the oil.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

Over time, the oil pickup screen can become clogged with debris, which can restrict the flow of oil through the engine. This restriction can cause a decrease in oil pressure, which can trigger the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

7. Oil pickup tube cracked, sucking air

If the oil pickup tube in your engine is cracked, it can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in Journey. The oil pickup tube is responsible for drawing oil from the oil pan and sending it through the engine for lubrication and cooling.

If the pickup tube is cracked, it can allow air to enter the oil system, which can disrupt the flow of oil and cause a decrease in oil pressure. This decrease in oil pressure can trigger the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

8. Clogged oil filter, and failed bypass value

A clogged oil filter and a failed bypass valve are two possible causes of the low oil pressure warning light turning on in your Dodge Journey.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

The oil filter is responsible for removing contaminants from the engine oil, and over time it can become clogged with debris. If the filter becomes too clogged, it can restrict the flow of oil through the engine, causing a decrease in oil pressure and triggering the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

The bypass valve is designed to allow oil to bypass the oil filter if the filter becomes clogged. If the bypass valve fails to function properly, it can prevent oil from bypassing the filter and result in a decrease in oil pressure.

9. Oil not changed on time

Oil that has not been changed on time or is too old can also contribute to low oil pressure in your Journey. Over time, engine oil breaks down and becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and removing contaminants. As a result, the oil pressure can drop and cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

May need to flush the engine

If the oil in your Journey is too old or has not been changed on time, it’s important to have it changed as soon as possible. An oil change will replace the old oil with fresh oil and help restore proper oil pressure. In some cases, it may also be necessary to flush the engine to remove any built-up contaminants that can contribute to low oil pressure.

Always change engine oil on time

Regular oil changes can help prevent low oil pressure issues in your Journey and prolong the life of the engine. It’s important to consult the owner’s manual for specific oil change intervals and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure proper engine lubrication and prevent costly repairs.

Use an OBD Scanner for diagnosis

Using an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scanner is a great way to diagnose low oil pressure issues in your Dodge Journey. An OBD scanner can connect to your vehicle’s OBD-II port and retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can help pinpoint the cause of the low oil pressure warning light.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

When the low oil pressure warning light turns on, the OBD scanner can be used to retrieve the specific DTC associated with the issue.

Once the DTC has been retrieved, the OBD scanner can also be used to monitor live engine data such as oil pressure, engine RPM, and engine temperature. This data can help identify issues such as a failed oil pressure sensor or a clogged oil pickup screen.

While an OBD scanner can be a useful tool for diagnosing low oil pressure issues in your Journey, it’s important to note that it may not be able to diagnose all possible causes of low oil pressure. In some cases, a visual inspection of the engine or additional diagnostic tests may be necessary to identify the root cause of the issue.

If you’re not comfortable using an OBD scanner or don’t have access to one, it’s important to have your Journey inspected by a qualified mechanic who can diagnose and repair low oil pressure issues to prevent further damage to the engine.

How to reset the warning light

You can reset the warning light in Journey by clearing the relevant fault codes with an OBD scanner.

2016 dodge journey reset oil change

However, it’s important to address the underlying cause of the issue before attempting to reset the light. Simply resetting the light with an OBD scanner by clearing the code will not fix the problem and the light will likely come back on once the system detects the fault again.

The low oil pressure warning light is designed to alert the driver of a potentially serious issue with the engine’s oil pressure. Ignoring the warning and attempting to reset the light without addressing the underlying cause can lead to further damage to the engine and result in costly repairs.

If you’re unsure of the cause of the low oil pressure, it’s best to have your Journey diagnosed by a qualified mechanic. They can use an OBD scanner to read any fault codes stored in the system and perform additional tests to identify the root cause of the issue. Once the underlying cause has been fixed, the mechanic can reset the warning light and ensure that the engine is running properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i continue driving my journey with low oil pressure light on.

If the low oil pressure warning light turns on in your Dodge Journey while you are driving, it is important to take immediate action to avoid potential engine damage. The first step is to safely stop the vehicle as soon as possible, while being mindful of traffic and other road hazards. Once you have come to a safe stop, you should turn off the engine.

It is important to note that driving with low oil pressure can cause serious damage to your engine, as the oil serves as a lubricant to prevent friction and wear between moving parts. If the engine is run without enough oil pressure, it can lead to increased heat and friction, which can cause damage or even complete engine failure.

How long can an engine run with low oil pressure?

It’s difficult to say exactly how long an engine can run with low oil pressure, as it depends on several factors such as the severity of the issue and how quickly the problem is addressed. In general, it’s not recommended to run an engine with low oil pressure for any longer than necessary, as it can lead to significant engine damage or even complete engine failure.

Can I just add oil to my car?

If your vehicle’s low oil pressure warning light has turned on, adding oil to the engine may help increase the oil pressure and prevent further damage, but only if the cause is due to low oil level.

Before adding oil, make sure to check the owner’s manual to determine the correct type and amount of oil needed for your vehicle. It’s also important to check the oil level and ensure that it is not above the maximum level.

Adding too much oil can cause foaming and reduce the oil’s ability to lubricate the engine properly, which can cause further damage. It’s best to add oil in small increments, checking the oil level frequently to ensure that the oil level is within the recommended range.

Will a bad oil pump throw a code?

A bad oil pump can cause low oil pressure and trigger the low oil pressure warning light, but it may not always throw a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) on the OBD system.

The reason for this is that the oil pressure sensor detects the low oil pressure and sends a signal to the engine control module (ECM) which then illuminates the low oil pressure warning light. However, if the oil pressure sensor is working properly, the ECM may not register a fault code related to the oil pump.

That being said, if the oil pump is failing and causing low oil pressure, it may trigger other DTCs related to engine performance or oil pressure. For example, if the oil pressure is low and causing engine misfires, it may trigger a DTC related to misfires. Similarly, if the low oil pressure is causing other engine components to fail, such as the variable valve timing system, it may trigger a DTC related to that system.

Can low oil pressure cause an engine to misfire?

Yes, low oil pressure can cause misfires in an engine. Misfires occur when one or more cylinders in the engine fail to ignite properly, which can cause a variety of symptoms such as a rough idle, decreased power, and increased emissions.

Low oil pressure can cause misfires in several ways. First, low oil pressure can lead to insufficient lubrication of critical engine components, such as the valve train and bearings. Without proper lubrication, these components can wear and fail, leading to engine misfires.

Secondly, low oil pressure can cause variable valve timing (VVT) systems to malfunction, which can also cause misfires. Many modern engines use VVT systems to optimize engine performance and fuel efficiency. These systems rely on oil pressure to operate properly, and if oil pressure is too low, they may not function as intended.

Will the check engine light come on if oil pressure is low?

In some cases, a low oil pressure condition may trigger the check engine light to come on. The check engine light is designed to come on when the engine control module (ECM) detects a fault with one of the vehicle’s systems or components. If low oil pressure is detected as a fault, the ECM may illuminate the check engine light and store a code in its memory for retrieval with a diagnostic scanner.
