World Wanderlust: The Global Adventures of Mai Tai Tom and Tracy

The wild, wacky, wonderful world we’ve witnessed  .

Tracy and I have experienced the great fortune to travel to so many spectacular regions of the world that we thought it would be fun for you to join us on some of these past sojourns.  Through words and photographs, we hope this website will inspire you to visit some of the numerous locales we have ventured throughout the years.

From the romantic maze of canals in Venice to the dazzling array of waterfalls at Plitvička jezera to majestic mountain peaks piercing the clouds in Switzerland, experience some of the most gorgeous scenery we have ever seen.

From a glass of wine (or four) overlooking the Adriatic at Dubrovnik’s Buza Bar to an unforgettable lunch in the hills overlooking the Chianti vineyards to a cold pivo above Prague to my first bite of kremna rezina in Bled, Slovenia, to a night of white truffle pasta in La Morra, Italy, join us for our favorite meals (yes, wine constitutes a meal).

From the churches of Rome to the museums of Paris to the monuments of Washington D.C. to marvelous mosaics in Ravenna, Italy, relive some of the history we have learned.  And Spain … oh my, the treasures we saw there!

Stay with us at some our favorite accommodations from San Quirico d’Orcia to San Mamete to Beilstein to Grindelwald to the best b&b ever in Beaune to the hills of Piemonte in Italy.  Bring along your swimming costume and take a dip in one of the seven pools we had all to ourselves at an incredible, inexpensive agriturismo in Chianti.  Bring an array of clothing to Scotland … you never know what the weather’s going to be like in that gorgeous country.

Marvel at the myriad of missteps we have taken along the way; from driving on the town square in Trevi, backing into a pole in Olomouc, nearly causing an international incident with Princess Anne in York and, of course, administering a fatal dose of Super Gas into our Diesel rental car outside of Gubbio, Italy. Plus, you never know when I might take a tumble like the one I took in Lisbon.

While at our website, come visit Mai Tai Tracy’s Kitchen , where my wife keeps me fed with some of her delicious recipes.

Speaking of food, we love to dine out.  Check out our favorite restaurants at Tom’s Dining Out .

Tracy and I have lived in California all our lives.  In California Dreaming , we offer you our special perspective on many of the Golden State’s places we have visited.

We are constantly updating, so be sure to bring along a comfortable pair of shoes, an open mind and, most importantly, a good sense of humor.

There is no dress code.  Wine is encouraged.  No ticket is required.  You can subscribe (for free) below to keep up to date.

Enjoy the Journey!  Attitude is Everything!

New Vertical Core at LAX will help connect passengers with planned people mover

Sid Garcia Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles International Airport held a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday to celebrate a major aspect of its ongoing massive renovation project.

The new vertical core at the Tom Bradley International Terminal will help passengers with connections to the planned people mover train system.

Los Angeles World Airports has invested over $335 million on three vertical cores - one at the Bradley terminal, one between terminals 4 and 5, and updgrading one at terminal 7.

"This project alone has created over 3,600 jobs," Mayor Karen Bass said. "Many of them for local workers. And it includes graduates of the Hire LAX apprenticeship readiness program. This project also puts over $167 million into our local businesses."

The walkways will be built by American, Delta, and Southwest Airlines between multiple terminals. These walkways can be reached by elevator or escalator and will eventually connect to the automatic people mover.

Sources tell Eyewitness News that trains will be put on the track in a few months for testing. Delays have put back the opening of the people mover to possibly fall 2025.

"When this facility, the automated people mover opens it's going to connect us to a train station a couple miles away from here," said John Ackerman, CEO of LAWA. "We're actually extending our airport by over 2 1/2 miles to the east and we're creating more access for our customers and more importantly for employees and we're connecting to the LA metro system."

The plan is to have the system done before a massive influx of visitors arrives in Los Angeles for the World Cup in 2026 - and of course the Olympics in 2028.

Arizona Senator’s $116,000 Taxpayer-Funded Private Flights Raise Eyebrows

Posted: April 19, 2024 | Last updated: April 19, 2024

Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona has come under scrutiny for her use of taxpayer money on private air travel. Recent reports reveal that Sinema has spent over $200,000 on private flights since 2020, with $116,000 in 2023 alone. As constituents and watchdog groups question her expenses, the senator's travel choices have sparked a debate about responsible budget management and accessibility to the public.

Sinema's Soaring Private Flight Expenses

Senator Kyrsten Sinema's private air travel expenses have reached new heights, with reports indicating she spent $116,000 of taxpayer money on private flights in 2023. This staggering amount is part of a larger $200,000 spent on private air travel since 2020, raising concerns about the senator's use of public funds.

While Sinema's representative, Hannah Hurley, defended the expenses, citing the need for efficient travel to connect with constituents across Arizona, critics argue that the senator's lack of accessible town halls during this time contradicts this justification. The situation has led to questions about whether these expenses are the most effective use of taxpayer money.

A Tale of Two Senators: Sinema vs. Kelly

In stark contrast to Senator Sinema's private flight expenses, her colleague Senator Mark Kelly has not incurred any taxpayer-funded private plane costs. This dichotomy has further fueled the debate surrounding Sinema's travel choices and has prompted discussions about responsible budget management.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics' Jordan Libowitz questioned whether Sinema's private flights are the best way to manage the budget and if she could be doing more for the state with the money spent on these expenses. Leibowitz also pointed out that Sinema's actions play into a larger pattern of behavior, where she pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable when spending other people's money.

Accessible Leadership: The Missing Town Halls

One of the primary concerns raised by critics of Senator Sinema's private flight expenses is the lack of accessible town halls during the same period. While her representative, Hannah Hurley, claimed that the private flights were necessary to connect with constituents across Arizona efficiently, the absence of public forums has led some to question the sincerity of this justification.

As the public demands greater transparency and accountability, the missing town halls have become a symbol of the disconnect between the senator and her constituents.

<p>Senator Sinema's representative, Hannah Hurley, defended the senator's use of private flights, stating that it allows her to "maximize her time in Arizona to connect with as many constituents in every corner of the state as possible." An inaugural Thai Fest will happen in Manhattan on April 20.

New York City is the location of a new food festival and it will be the first ever one centered on Thai cuisine.

The inaugural Thai Fest will take place on Saturday, April 20, on 6 th Avenue between 29 th and 30 th Streets in Manhattan. Its hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This food festival will deliver a taste of Thai food and drink by showcasing Thailand’s cultural flavors and traditions through 12 participating restaurants from throughout New York City.

Thai Fest, which is sponsored by the beverage brand, Chi Forest, was organized as a sister brand of the Dragon Fest . This NYC festival was founded in 2023 and celebrates Chinese culture through a schedule of events, tastings and market fairs.

Both events were started by Biubiu Xu, an entrepreneur and cultural advocate who also launched Egg House in 2018, an NYC pop-up immersion experience.

Twelve Thai restaurants throughout New York City will participate in Thai Fest.

“While hosting Dragon Fest, the team encountered various cuisines from countries with significant overseas Chinese populations, naturally including Thai cuisine,” said Xu. “Dragon Fest is an annual outdoor festival that celebrates Chinese food and culture in New York. Following its success, the team decided to expand our cultural festivals to include other Asian cultures, leading to the creation of Thai Fest.”

The 12 restaurants will set up booths and offer around 35 different food items. As admission to Thai Fest is free and open to the public, the cost for purchasing food and drinks will range between $8-$15 each.

“What makes Thai cuisine unique in NYC is the presence of both authentic food from underrepresented restaurants and innovative, creative twists on traditional dishes from more well-known establishments,” said Xu. “This diversity is embraced and reflected at Thai Fest, where the festival highlights these culinary aspects through the participation of various NYC Thai restaurants.”

Traditional Thai food and drink will be sold at the inaugural Thai Fest.

The offers include Thai delicacies include some well-noted city establishments. The planned list extends to: Crab Fried Rice from Fish Cheeks in Manhattan; spicy Krapow from Mayree in Manhattan; savory Fried Meatballs from Sappe in Manhattan; rich Khao Soi from Soothr in Manhattan; and crispy Fried Chicken from Somtum Der in Manhattan.

Other choices will incorporate classic Pad Thai from Rua Thai in Brooklyn; sweet Mango Sticky Rice from Zabb PuTawn in Manhattan; flavorful Garlic Noodle from Obao in Manhattan; and tangy Tom Yum Ramen from 11Tigers in Manhattan.

“These restaurants were invited to join based on their reputation for quality and authenticity in Thai cuisine,” said Xu. “The active participation of these Thai restaurants can be attributed to their eagerness to engage in community events that provide an excellent platform for promoting Thai cuisine and culture.”

This briefcase lets you walk around with 368TB of NVMe SSDs — WD Ultrastar Transporter features 128GB RAM, 1,300W power supply, and Ice Lake Xeon CPU

The unit caters to consumers who want to transport colossal amounts of data to the point where downloading it over the Internet would be too slow.

Western Digital Ultrastar Transporter

Western Digital, known for its hard drives and SSDs, has unveiled a new product that isn't a storage device in the technical sense. The product, known as the Ultrastar Transporter, is a new Western Digital-built travel case that houses a whopping 368TB of NVMe flash storage. The case is TAA compliant and has a 12-core Intel Ice Lake server that houses all SSDs and dual 200Gb ethernet ports.

The Ultrastar Transporter briefcase addresses high-performance, high-capacity data transfers between server and edge locations. Western Digital reports that demand is high for physical storage transport, particularly vast amounts of data that would take days or weeks to transfer over the Internet. WD's new travel case solves this problem by allowing users to transport vast data through good old physical transportation.

A few examples include workloads where high-capacity data capture needs to be processed at one location from another. Another is the proliferation of multi-datacenter workflows, where large data sets have to be held at multiple locations and rapidly sent to those locations faster than what raw internet bandwidth can provide.

The Ultrastar Transporter has a rackmount server that holds all 368TB of NVMe flash storage to accommodate all that storage. The server features a 12-core Intel Ice Lake Xeon 4310 CPU, 128GB of DDR4 RDIMM memory, 1300W Titanium PSU, and dual 2TB SN740 NVMe SSDs in Raid 1, which serve as the boot drive. I/O consists of dual 200GB ethernet ports, dual USB 3.0 ports, a DB9 serial port, and a VGA port. 7 PCIe Gen4 slots are located on the board, including four x16 slots and three x8 slots. These PCIe slots connect all 368TB of SSD storage to the system.

The case itself looks like a conventional carrying case. The outer shell appears to be hard plastic, with metal supporting rails filling the lips of the case. The case features two latching mechanisms and a mechanism to attach a lock for security . You can transport the travel case by rolling it on its two wheels or with another handle that allows you to carry it like a briefcase.
