Testimonials

I’ve sailed three times with Victoria Cruise Lines down the Yangtze River, and enjoyed a wonderful adventure on every occasion. With a fleet of well-maintained ships and a top-notch staff, Victoria is second to none. —John Shors, Bestselling author of Unbound: A Novel of the Great Wall of China

We have cruised up and down the Yangtze River numerous times with Victoria Cruise Lines, and have enjoyed the scenery, the shore excursions and the cruise experience greatly. The accommodations, the meals, and crew entertainment made our time on board a truly great experience. We have found all the staff and crew from the Captain down to be very professional and courteous, treating all passengers equally at all times, and making us feel like family members. The River Guide and the Cruise Director were very experienced and helpful from the time we arrived. We have gained many happy and lasting memories from our many cruises with Victoria. We would recommend Victoria Cruise Lines to anybody thinking of cruising the Yangtze River. —Dawn and Malcolm Mc Gregor, Australia

Excellent service, care and attention from the staff, particularly those in the dining area. Meals offered a wide and pleasing selection. The room was clean and comfortable. All in all the Yangtze cruise with its breathtaking scenery was one of the high points of our visit to China. —Sandra Ayoung-Khan, Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies

Yangtze River Cruises

China is one of the most fascinating destinations on earth, best explored on one of our tours to the highlights of China.

On your visit marvel at the mighty Yangtze River and geographic diversity of China. See the contrast between ancient Chinese culture and its more recent entrepreneurial spirit. Be inspired by majestic landscapes and impressive historical sites. Yet all the while enjoy the comfort of deluxe hotels and luxurious ships on our fully-escorted tours.

About Yangtze River Cruises

Yangtze river highlights, customer reviews.

We offer a range of carefully planned itineraries, all of which include a journey along the most scenic section of the River Yangtze. The landscape is truly captivating, in particular the Three Gorges and Lesser Three Gorges, where sheer cliffs and mountain peaks rise dramatically from the water.

Our tours take you to the highlights of China. Depending on the holiday, you can visit:

Beijing: Visit the Forbidden City with its grand palaces and courtyards, Tiananmen Square, the Imperial Summer Palace with its lakeside Chinese gardens, and excursions to the Great Wall of China

Xi’an: Home of the Terracotta Warriors, 8000 life-sized terracotta infantrymen still guarding the tomb of the first Quin Emperor

Chengdu: The Panda Breeding Centre

Shanghai: Cosmopolitan and scintillating city with its famous waterfront and Nanjing Road, the longest shopping street in China

Hong Kong: Unique former British colony with its bustling atmosphere and superb harbour setting overlooked by Victoria Peak.

Great Wall of China

Chengdu (China)

The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is one of Chengdu’s most popular attractions. The enclosures house around 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas. Other highlights include the Tomb of Wang Jian, decorated with carvings of musicians and the Jinsha Site Museum which contains ruins of the Shu kingdom.

Hong Kong (China)

Hong Kong is one of the world's busiest ports. The cruise terminal in Victoria Harbour is within walking distance of markets and restaurants, set against a skyline of futuristic skyscrapers, and junks and sampans plying the harbour. Stanley Market sells a range of goods, and an historic tramway takes visitors up Victoria Peak for panoramic views. Dining in floating restaurants, shopping in Causeway Bay and visiting Man Mo Temple are popular Hong Kong experiences

This tourist resort on Hainan Island has a tropical atmosphere, and the scenic, 4-mile long Yalong Bay where there are watersports on offer. Snack vendors and barbecue stands can be found in Sanya around the clock. On the coast nearby is Tianya Haijiao, an area of interesting rock formations, some inscribed with poems. The island's landscape is mountainous, and crossed by rivers and valleys.

Three Gorges

The Three Gorges region is a beautiful stretch of the Yangtze River. Qutang Gorge is the shortest of the three gorges but the most dramatic, Wu Gorge is known for its forest-covered mountains and Xiling Gorge is the longest. The Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydropower project in the world is located in the middle of the Xiling Gorge. Some cruiselines offer excursions to the Lesser Three Gorges on the Daning River – Dragon Gate, Misty and Emerald.

Xi’an was one of the wealthiest cities in the world when China dominated the silk trade. Today, it is home to the famous Terracotta Warriors, 8000 life-sized infantryman who guard the tomb of the first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. The tomb was discovered by farmers in 1974. Other highlights include the impressive Ming-era city walls, atmospheric Muslim Quarter and the Bell Tower, dating back to the 14th century.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two busy weeks in China, encompassing everything from the futuristic architecture of Shanghai to the beautiful and evocative Forbidden City in Beijing, taking in the Terracotta Warriors, pandas, pagodas and the Great Wall on the way. Our tour also included a fascinating 5 day cruise along the Yangtze river visiting the very impressive feat of engineering which is the Three Gorges Dam contrasting with the timeless beauty of the three gorges themselves. We saw everything along the river from huge coal barges to tiny sampans and junks; from the massive conurbation of Chongqing to ancient and isolated Taoist monasteries.

We were very well looked after by our tour escort who accompanied us the whole way and by knowledgeable local guides, fluent in English. China is a country of huge contrasts and it is changing rapidly. We would unequivocally recommend this trip, the only caveat would be it is not really for people with mobility problems. There is a fair amount of walking involved and to access some sites there may be a considerable number of steps. We saw and learnt a great deal in our 13 days and had many new experiences from trying Tai Chi to the challenge of a 15 dumpling banquet. We even learnt some Mandarin!

We have recently returned from China and had a fabulous time. The organisation of the Viking holiday was second to none. The hotels (with the exception of The Golden Flower Xian, which was tired and not up the the standard of the rest of the hotels) were super and the ship, Viking Century Emerald was perfect. The staff were attentive and efficient and made the holiday more personalised.

If we had any criticism, it would be that there wasnt enough free time built in, except on the ship, to explore the areas independently, and to shop, which is how we have previously holidayed. As this was only our second cruise experience, both being river cruises, Nile and Yangtze, we were not disappointed, but still not sure if cruising on a larger vessel would be for us.

I would certainly reccommend this cruise as an ideal way to see the main sites of interest in China, staying in luxury with all excursions included and managed by someone else. Everything ran smoothly and all needs were catered for. Well done Viking.

Our yangtze cruise was part of a once in a lifetime holiday exploring China which is truly awe inspiring and way surpassed anything we imagined it would be. The cruise itself was breathtaking; the Three Gorges are majestic, fascinating andbeautifuland the boat trip along shennong stream shouldnt be missed if only for the greater connection to peace and nature. The visit to the Three Gorges dam is interesting and the view from the top stunning. Going through the five locks takesjust overfour hours, so take the time to relax. Fengdu is well worth the visit. We didnt see anything that came close in terms of unusual interest - it really is the strangest and atmospheric place but far too many people in such a small place, all crowding round to see everything and possibly not quite long enough for me. Trainers or safe shoes are a must - theres a bit of climbing at Fengdu but theres always the cable car if you cant face the climb!

We were incredibly lucky with the weather, raining only on the day we boarded and part of the next day -the rest was warm and sunny - mid september is a great time to go - it is worth taking a light raincoat/anorak - you do need it. We anticipated mosquitoes by the army but never even got bitten. Clothes need to be casual with at least one smart outfit for the evening if you are inclined to dance and join in the planned festivities which are quite sweet. Chinese food, even on board the cruise, is a bit of an aquired taste. Its not like the takeaways or restaurants in the west - quite different and as a vegetarian, I found it a bit of a challenge although on some days, so did the meat eaters. But if you are going to travel, you have to be nothing if not adventurous!

As the river winds through Myanmar, you’ll encounter spectacular sights such as the ancient pagodas, traditional villages, and the historic city of Bagan, a site renowned for its thousands of temples and stupas. These architectural marvels offer a glimpse into a past era of opulent kingdoms and spiritual devotion. For an authentic experience, visit a local village to immerse yourself in the daily life and customs of the Burmese people.

Insider’s Tip: Visit a local village for an authentic glimpse into Burmese life.

How To Get There: Fly to Yangon or Mandalay, where many cruises begin.

Yangtze River Cruise and price tour In Chongqing

Zoe Zhou at China Discovery helped me, my wife and my sister book a 5 days/4 nights Yangtze River Cruise on Century Glory from Yichang to Chongqing and 4 days private tour in Chongqing. The ship is brand new. All the crew members are excellent, courteous, always there to help us with any questions and requests. We had a wonderful time on the ship and those interesting shore excursions. The private tour guide and the driver were very professional. David, our tour guide was very knowledgeable about local history and took good care of us. Mr. Shum was an excellent driver and his SUV was very clean. As to our great Travel Advisor, Zoe at China Discovery, she was very helpful and resourceful. We were lucky to have her planned this cruise and Chongqing vacation for us. I will definitely recommend Zoe to my family and friends when they plan to visit China in the future. I will also definitely reach out to Zoe again on our next trip to China. Thank you so much Zoe.

I was thinking of making Yangtze river Cruise for several times. This year I tried to collect the most detailed info about Yangtze River cruise and after reading all info I sent request with my questions to Chengdu Bamboo International Tours. Riley replied my message, the payment was done and we were waiting for October to start our trip. I chosed the ship "Yangtze 1", because the cruise on this ship was looking more interesting for me. Yangtze 1 is the only ship, which goes through Three Gorges ship lift and has the most interesting included tours everyday. Now I'm at home already. My chinese trip finished, my mother is happy, I'm happy also! So, I want to tell you how it was. My mother and me were the only foreigners in this cruise. Andy Leo, the general manager of that cruise, provided the best service for us during all time we were on the ship. All messages were repeated in english, ship requested english speaking guides for each excursion. Andy also told us about the places we could see from the ship. We were very satisfied all the time. Cruise cabin was comfortable, all crew members were friendly, every breakfast, lunch and dinner were the most delicious, head chef is really the master of the meal. Every time we saw so many delicious food in restaurant, we were full of thankfulness to him and his crew. It is really a lot of work to do this miracle and they did the best! Do not worry, you will never stay hungry here, the meal is really super! If you want to choose this cruise there are some useful words for you. You do not need to pay for meal and drinks during breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also receive free coffee in the bar early in the morning. When you enter the ship nobody will ask you to pay deposit or tips at the beginning. But really you will want to pay the tips after this cruise! All people on the ship will work hard to provide you the best service! The prices for optional excursions are different: 290 RMB for the Tribe of the Three Gorges, 290 RMB for White Emperor City, 220 RMB for Shibaozhai Pagoda. If you want to pay the tips you can put them into the envelope and put this envelope into the box in lobby. You also can find General Manager and give him personal tips, 50 RMB is OK, but I sure you will want to give more :) Do not worry about meal during breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nobody will remain hungry, the meal will be added again and again. No need to hurry in the queue. I want to thank Riley from Chengdu Bamboo International Tours and all crew members of "Yangtze 1" ship for this wonderful, safe and delicious journey! I will remember this for years!

I organised this tour with Lily Xu, who was very helpful in putting the trip together. Members of our group had special dietary needs, such as coeliac disease, and arrangements we're made for them. We did these trips at the end of our holiday and it was wonderful to have things well organised and relaxed after travelling on our own. Our guides, Alice and Jim, were friendly and helpful. We were able to view things at our own pace. The driver was good and also friendly and helpful. We would have found it difficult to go to Wulong otherwise because of the large distances. As a group of 5, we were comfortably transported in a 12 seat bus. We all enjoyed these trips and would recommend travelling to both places. Annette, Australia

Wing Zeng at Yangtze River Cruise helped my family of five book a memorable vacation on the Century Diamond. We traveled for 4 nights / 5 days from Yichang to Chongqing. Wing assisted us in booking private transfers from Yichang rail station to the cruise, and again from Chongqing cruise to the airport. She also helped arrange English guides for each excursion on the boat, and even

Thanks to Yanny He for the knowledgable and prompt responses to my inquiries. We had a great cruise with no hassles when we arrived. We decided on a self-directed and self-booked trip except for the cruise portion and Yanny made it easy. Thanks!

Could you please pass on our appreciation and thanks to Management and staff at Yangtze River Cruises. My wife and myself have just completed a cruise from Chongqing to Yichang on 7/10/2019. We wish to say that the cruise was excellent. The land excursions were excellent and interesting. With regard to the Victoria Jenna, the ship was clean, and ALL crew were very helpful, courteous and friendly and in our opinion did there jobs in an excellent manner. We also enjoyed the food and the amenities on board. A big thankyou to YRC for the excellent way they handled our booking and the prompt attention to our inquiries along the way. The Yangtze Cruise was one of the highlights of our trip to China and will always be remembered. Keep up the good work, we will always, when the opportunity arises recommend YRC and the Victoria Jenna to any of our friends looking for a cruise on the beautiful Yangtze. What Is a River Cruise?

Aerial view of a Viking river ship sailing past Dürnstein, Austria along the Danube river

Nothing Compares to a River Cruise

River cruising is a relaxing, immersive and thoroughly enjoyable form of travel where you can enjoy ever-changing scenery along the banks of waterways such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Douro, Volga and Yangtze. Unpack just once on an award-winning, state-of-the-art 190-guest Longship and journey into the very heart of iconic cities and charming towns.

A river cruise can be defined as:

  • A form of leisure travel that takes guests along inland waterways.
  • Usually there are several port stops over the course of each passage.
  • Typical river cruises often last longer than a week.
  • Carry anywhere from 100 to 250 guests, depending on the ship size.
  • Are popular on many of the world’s major rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Volga and Yangtze.

Explore the world’s great cities

The most cosmopolitan cities developed along the rivers, the world’s first trade routes. From iconic “must-sees” like Paris, Amsterdam and Budapest to quaint villages and towns waiting to be discovered, a river provides you easy access to savor the delights of both. Cities like Berlin, Lisbon, Prague, Vienna, Moscow, Cairo and Beijing are just a few that are accessible on a river cruise. In addition to the rivers listed above, cruises along lesser-known rivers like the Mekong in Southeast Asia and the Main in Germany are options.

What to Expect on a River Cruise

While river cruises can be enjoyed by people of all ages, they generally appeal to people more advanced in age -- baby boomers, in particular. Many river cruise lines allow children aboard their ships, although they may have age restrictions in place and usually there isn't much for kids to do. The makeup of a liner can include people of a wide range of nationalities, but more often than not, guests come from English-speaking countries.

Best Times to Go

Whether you choose to travel in the on-season or the off-season, you’ll be able to gain a deep cultural experience in each of your destinations. In the spring and summer, you may witness local outdoor events and lively activities that only occur during the warmer months of the year. Cooler weather in the fall may mean you’ll run into fewer people in the streets of cities and ports you visit, which will allow you to take your time and get a closer look at sites that interest you without feeling rushed or crowded. And in the winter season, you’ll be delighted by festive Christmas markets and enchanted by the holiday traditions and celebrations of the locals.

What You Should Pack

Given that weather will be variable depending on where your river cruise takes you, bringing along both warm and light clothes is wise. Even during warm months, there is wind on the rivers, so it’s best to plan for layers even if the weather is hot. Additionally, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so bring along comfortable shoes. Lastly, pack some dressier clothes in case you attend a formal event while visiting one of your cruise destinations.

How They Differ from Ocean Cruises

Although river cruises and ocean cruises share a number of similarities, there are also various—and considerable—differences between the two. For one, ocean liners are bigger and offer more stateroom accommodations on average. Appropriately, they’re able to host significantly more guests. The smaller scale of river ships means fewer guests, but more opportunities to get to know fellow travelers, which often lead to lifelong friendships.

In contrast to ocean cruises that may include multiple sea days, you will rarely experience a full day of sailing on a river cruise. Typically, guests will awake each morning to find themselves in a new port. With river cruising, you can also enjoy an ever-changing mural of breathtaking scenery from your ship, so the journey itself becomes part of your discovery.

For those without sea legs, river cruises have the advantage of smooth trekking, shallow waters and the gift of land that’s always in sight. Lastly, most river cruises offer inclusive value, meaning your Wi-Fi, water, alcohol and included excursions are covered in the price. However, ocean cruises tend to offer more upscale amenities, like fitness centers, multiple dining options and a variety of live entertainment.

Who Would Enjoy a River Cruise?

River cruises are great for everyone, especially those desiring a more relaxed and intimate form of travel. Individuals who've never stepped foot on a ship before will enjoy the relative ease of a river-bound trip with little chance of seasickness. Furthermore, with a focus on cultural exploration of locations, river cruises are perfect for those with a curiosity about art and history, or a general interest in travel.  Every river is unique and each tells a different story—not only of the countries through which it flows, but also of its locks, canals, scenery and bridges.
