Experience the wonders of Angkor Wat and the incredible temples on this full-day private tour. Explore these historic gems with ease as we guide you through the following highlights:

Angkor Wat: Renowned as one of the 8 Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat stands as the largest religious monument ever built. This sprawling complex is a marvel of temples, pagodas, statues, palaces, and chambers, all dedicated to King Suryavarman II during the zenith of the Khmer Empire. Typically, it takes three days to explore the full site, and Angkor Wat serves as your first gateway to the wonders of Angkor. (Note: A 40-minute drive from Siem Reap's center is required to reach the site.)

Angkor Thom: Encircled by an extensive moat, Angkor Thom resembles a fortified city more than a religious site. It boasts five entrances, each facing a cardinal direction. The Victory Gate, leading from the Angkor Thom Royal Palace grounds, is the eastern gateway. These entrances used to have causeways, but today only the south gate maintains its water underpass.

Ta Prohm: Positioned at the western fringes of the Angkor Wat Complex, Ta Prohm is a captivating site. Constructed with colossal stones entwined by towering trees, Ta Prohm was commissioned by King Jayavarman VII as an early element of his monastery and university construction program. The site's mysterious ambiance led to its feature in the film "Tomb Raider." (Note: Visit in the afternoon to benefit from the shade provided by the extensive tree canopy.)

Bayon Temple: Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, Bayon is celebrated for its iconic stone faces. At a distance, the temple appears mountainous, but as you approach, the faces come into focus, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Preah Khan: Situated northeast of Angkor Thom, Preah Khan is another compelling Hindu temple commissioned by King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. The temple primarily consists of successive rectangular galleries surrounding a hidden Buddhist sanctuary within a dense forest. This serene temple rests on the outer perimeter of the vast Angkor Wat Complex, providing an opportunity for a tranquil visit away from the crowds.

Banteay Srei: Begin your adventure with a visit to the enchanting Banteay Srei temple, known for its remarkable pinkish sandstone architecture. Explore the intricate carvings and immerse yourself in the temple's unique charm.

Banteay Samre: Continue your temple exploration with a stop at Banteay Samre. Marvel at the ancient structures and uncover the history hidden within these sacred grounds.

Ox Cart Ride: Traverse the picturesque Cambodian countryside in an ox cart. As you roll through this idyllic landscape, soak in the beauty of rice fields, swaying palm trees, and quaint villages. This leisurely journey immerses you in the heart of rural Cambodia.

APOPO Rat Center: Gain insight into an extraordinary hero in Cambodia – the APOPO rats. Discover how these rodents have saved countless lives through their unique abilities. Learn about the innovative methods employed to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance, making Cambodia safer for all.

Best of Vietnam & Cambodia

18 days | travel into the heart and soul of south east asia.

Intrepid Travel Vietnam Hoi-An group street

Take an unforgettable adventure through two of the most colourful yet contrasting cultures in South East Asia. Starting off in Vietnam, cruise through dramatic karst scenery on a boat tour of Ha Long Bay, step back into the world of the country's last emperors in Hue, soak up the old-world charm of Hoi An and be awed by the endless energy of Ho Chi Minh City. In Cambodia, discover the country's fascinating history and culture in Phnom Penh's heaving streets and in the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor. This is a journey that draws you away from the crowds and into heart and soul of this captivating region, and its equally enchanting people.

Trip overview

  • Sail through Ha Long Bay’s limestone karsts and island caves, visit a centre that turns the bay’s discarded trash into treasures and spend the night checking out the stars on an overnight cruise.
  • Travel like a local on a motorbike tour, riding pillion and taking in the historical pagodas, bridges and villages of Hue.
  • Watch the sun rising over Angkor Wat as it did over 800 years ago with your leader. Wander through the amazing ancient temples on a guided tour and with a three-day Angkor pass to cover your whole time in Siem Reap, you can explore this incredible temple complex as much and as often as you like.
  • Discover the countryside around Battambang on a bike ride around rural farms to meet with local producers, through an Intrepid partner and social enterprise that supports the local communities.
  • Experience life on water on a boat tour visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and understand the deep bond between the late and the local communities.
  • In order to see as much as possible, this trip involves some long journeys, including by overnight train where the amenities are shared and basic. For more about what this experience is like, see our blog post here:
  • intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-expect-on-an-overnight-train-in-vietnam/
  • Depending on where you come from, the weather in Vietnam might be hotter and more humid than what you are used to. Please consider your suitability to the season you wish to travel in. Check out intrepidtravel.com/vietnam/weather-in-vietnam for more info.
  • There are some long travel days by both private and public transport (up to 10 hours on the road), including the days that you cross from Vietnam to Cambodia and Cambodia to Thailand. Your leader and local guides will assist with the border crossings, but plenty of patience is advised.
  • Some travellers enjoy Siem Reap so much that they decide they want to stay there longer, rather than continuing with the group to Bangkok. You are welcome to sign off the trip to enjoy more of Cambodia, however we aren’t able to reimburse any unused services or provide alternate onward travel arrangements.
  • At times your accommodation may not have continuous hot water. Most travellers don’t find this a problem however, and are often keen to cool down from the heat with a refreshing cold shower.

You'll get to sample delicious Vietnamese cuisine like a true local, stroll through the hidden alleyways and bustling markets and take in a spectacular view of Hoan Kiem lake from a secret café. Travel by private minibus to World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with sandy coves, grottoes and 1600 limestone islands formed over millennia by wind and water erosion. Board a private boat and cruise the bay, exploring Surprise Cave and perhaps even enjoying a swim from Ti Top Island Beach during the warmer months. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. To end the day, spend an evening aboard the boat beneath the night sky. What better way to get to know your fellow travellers than an old school sleepover in an unforgettable location?

  • Overnight boat (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Cave entry
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Kayaking and swimming is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

There are restrictions on the number of boats that are permitted to stay in the bay overnight, sometimes resulting in a shortage. To ensure all Intrepid travellers can enjoy the experience of a night on the water, occasionally you will stay on a larger boat (with approximately 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case an Intrepid group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same.

Wake up on the waters of Ha Long Bay, and before you leave the memorable scenery behind, it’s time for one last stop. The Green Life Centre is committed to turning Halong Bay’s trash into treasure by collecting discarded items and skillfully turning them into beautiful handicrafts. Meet the team behind this important cause and learn how to transform rubbish into a useful and reusable bag. After your visit, return by bus to Hanoi. Arrive late this afternoon and enjoy free time until tonight’s train voyage. Be sure to grab a bowl of pho while you’re in town and slurp down this local specialty made from broth, noodles and meat. Maybe chill by Hoan Kiem Lake until you board an overnight train to Hue this evening.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - The Green Life Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours, not including your overnight train.

Shared day use hotel rooms are arranged in Hanoi if you would like to freshen up before the overnight train (one room for every six group members).

Sleeper trains typically have four or six berth compartments with bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Depending on the configuration of the group, you may need to share with people of different genders or passengers who aren’t part of the group. Your leader will coordinate this and give further information about the train.

Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to the hotel. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue holds the treasures of the country’s royal past. Enjoy free time in the morning to rest or explore. If you choose the latter (and who can blame you) the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the specialties that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables like banh khoai (royal rice cake). Reunite with the group to visit the war-damaged ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a sprawling city-within-a-city which contains the remains of temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Hue - Imperial City entrance and guided visit

See Hue like a local – from the back of a motorbike! Straddle the saddle and whiz around town with a local guide, taking in historic and contemporary sights along the way. Stop at Thanh Toan to see the 18th-century covered bridge and villagers shopping at their local market. Visit the 17th-century active Buddhist monastery of Thien Mu Pagoda and see the car that belonged to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. For lunch, savour a vegetarian feast in a nunnery. Finish at the lakeside royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before heading back to town.

  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
  • Hue - Highlights & back streets by motorbike
  • Hue - Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Hue - Motorbike Tour Lunch

The motorbike tour has been assessed for safety and is closely monitored. To participate please ensure your travel insurance covers riding pillion on a motorbike up to 125cc. If you prefer not to participate, please let your leader know and they will arrange car transportation (cost included).

This morning travel by bus through coastal rice paddies and the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After a photo stop on the way, arrive into Hoi An. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An was a major international trading port during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today, parts of the beautifully-preserved town retain the feel of centuries past. It's also a shopping mecca, famous for its plethora of tailors. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a sightseeing walk through the Old Town to visit a handful of the city's major attractions. You’ll also be given a sightseeing pass so you can further explore select attractions at your leisure.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Today is a free day to explore Hoi An. Maybe browse the cobbled streets and art galleries or hire a bike and cycle through rice paddies out to Cua Dai Beach. Maybe browse for paintings, ceramics and colourful cloth lanterns in the town’s markets and preserved Chinese shophouses. If you’re craving a new look, you could pay a visit to one of the hundreds of tailors and get something special made. Hoi An is also known for its delicious regional food, so be sure to enjoy a meal at a riverside restaurant or perhaps partake in a cooking class.

  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Today take a short, early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. After landing, take a sightseeing tour around the city by bus. Pass the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House, then stop in at the War Remnants Museum to discover some of the sobering stories of the 20-year-long Vietnam/American War.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - City tour
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace - VND40000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - A O show - VND1050000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon Street Food by Night Urban Adventure - USD36

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

This morning head out on a day trip to explore the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat to Ben Tre to visit the coconut gardens and stop at a local home to sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. After, paddle in sampans (small rowing boats) past coconut trees along the Mekong Delta. Take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages and learn about rural life and the industry created around coconut products like brooms and coconut fibre mats. Eat lunch at a restaurant in the heart of the Delta, sampling regional specialties such as the famous elephant ear fish. Cruise the major waterways to Ben Tre boat pier, then return by bus to Ho Chi Minh City. This evening, perhaps head out to sample some local specialties as a final farewell with your fellow travellers and leader.

  • Mekong Delta - Mekong Delta Day Trip & Village Tuk-Tuk Tour
  • Mekong Delta - Lunch

Enjoy a free day in Ho Chi Minh to get out and discover the city at your own pace. Alternatively, why not get an up close and personal history lesson on guerrilla warfare during an Urban Adventures tour to the Cu Chi tunnels. This underground network in the middle of the jungle was used by the Viet Cong during the war. Take the chance to climb into the tunnels and imagine what it would’ve been like to eat, sleep, work and cook – even go to school underground as conflict raged above. Return to Ho Chi Minh where there will be a meeting at 6 pm to welcome any new travellers joining you on the next stage of your adventure. Afterwards, perhaps get to know your new travel buddies over an optional group dinner.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum - VND40000

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers.

Travel by public bus across the border, through rural Vietnam and Cambodia and onto Phnom Penh. Cambodia's capital city is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. If you're looking for a tasty beverage when you arrive, head for a mojito on the rooftop or if you're in the mood for shopping, stop in at the art-deco Psar Thmei (Central Market) or travel out to Psar Tuol Tom Pong (the Russian Market) for the best range of local souvenirs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours including border crossing and lunch stop.

On the bus journey across the border, you will exit Vietnam at Moc Bai and enter Cambodia at Ba Vet. Your leader will assist you with border crossing procedures. You will also have the comfort of being on the same bus throughout the journey with less hassle at the border crossing by changing vehicles. If you’d prefer not to travel by bus today, you are welcome to book a flight instead (at your own expense).

Today, confront Cambodia's tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. It's estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. You’ll also head out to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a stupa made up of some 8000 human skulls marks the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng. Afterwards, you may wish to learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history from an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom, shrouded in myth, is equally worth a visit, as is the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours around the city are a great alternative to walking and generally include the Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, the Independence Monument and Royal Palace.

  • Phnom Penh - The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Phnom Penh - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21)
  • Phnom Penh - Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda - USD10

The stories and history shared at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) are confronting and many travellers will find them upsetting. This is an important part of Cambodia’s recent history that we feel is important for travellers to know. If you would prefer not to join these activities your leader can recommend some optional alternatives. Some further information on visiting these sites can be found here: intrepidtravel.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields

How safe is Vietnam?

iVietnam is a relatively safe country to visit but there are increasing instances of theft, especially in HCMC where pickpockets and snatch thieves on motorbikes are the worst menace. The best tip is to be vigilant at all times. Often cute kids or old grannies have deft fingers. Leave all valuables (expensive watches, jewellery, glasses, etc.) at home, and don’t even wear flash costume jewellery. Make sure you have a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags at all times and never leave anything you value lying around unattended. I would also not advise taking cyclos late at night, especially in HCMC. our guides will advise you what is “do and don’t” case by case.

What about medical insurance?

It is advised that travelers should have some form of medical insurance before arriving in Vietnam. Although there are several international medical clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, generally the country still lacks adequate medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, especially in other areas. Therefore, we advise that travelers have sufficient cover for emergency medical care as a precautionary measure. Should I take my money in cash or travellers’cheques? The official currency of Vietnam is the dong, which can not be purchased outside Vietnam. The main banks in Hanoi and HCMC can handle a fairly broad range of currencies nowadays, but the dollar is still the most widely accepted. I therefore recommend taking a combination of US$ cash and US$ travellers’ cheques, with the bulk in travellers’ cheques for safety. American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook cheques are the most recognised brands.

The World's Most Unique Coffee and Tea Experiences

The World's Most Unique Coffee and Tea Experiences

Published in the Sunday Indian Express Magazine - Eye on 11 August, 2024

Let’s find out how a simple cup of coffee or tea can transport you into the heart of a culture

I love my coffee. There is something about that first sip in the morning that jumpstarts my day, filling me with warmth and energy. Over the years, my appreciation for coffee has grown beyond just the routine of brewing a cup to savouring it. It has become a way to connect with the cultures and traditions of the places I visit.

The first time I was exposed to a truly unique coffee experience was in Vietnam, where I discovered the intriguing world of egg coffee. This delightful concoction combines strong, dark coffee with a creamy, frothy mixture of egg yolk and sweetened condensed milk. Served hot or cold, egg coffee is a testament to Vietnamese innovation and creativity. Sitting in a cozy caf in Hanoi, I was captivated by the rich flavours and textures, realising that coffee can be more than just a drinkit can be an experience that tells a story about a place and its people.

This experience opened my eyes to the diverse ways coffee, and along with it tea, can be enjoyed around the world. As I travelled to different countries, I found that coffee and tea are integral to understanding local cultures, each offering a unique glimpse into the traditions and customs that shape daily life. From bustling markets in Istanbul to serene tea gardens in Kyoto, these beverages are often at the heart of social interactions, rituals, and ceremonies.

So today, I wanted to talk about coffee and tea. So let's explore some of the world’s most unique coffee and tea experiences and go on a journey to discover the rich variety of flavours, aromas, and traditions that define these beloved beverages.

The Birthplace of Coffee: Ethiopia

Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of coffee, where the rich aroma and complex flavours are celebrated through the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. This ritual is not just about drinking coffee; it's a social and cultural experience that emphasises hospitality and community. As you participate in the ceremony, you  witness the process of roasting green coffee beans over an open flame, grinding them by hand, and brewing the coffee in a traditional pot called a ‘jebena.’

The ceremony often takes place in a home or communal setting, inviting guests to engage in conversation while savouring the freshly brewed coffee. The ceremony's sensory elementsthe sight of the coffee beans roasting, the smell of their rich aroma, and the sound of the coffee boilingcreate a captivating experience that invites you to appreciate the artistry and tradition behind Ethiopian coffee culture.

Colombia’s Coffee Triangle

Nestled in the Andean region of Colombia, the Coffee Triangle is renowned for its lush landscapes and fertile lands that produce some of the world's finest coffee. Visiting this region offers an opportunity to delve into the heart of coffee production, where you can explore coffee farms, or ‘fincas’, and learn about the cultivation and harvesting processes.

A typical coffee tour might include a walk through the plantations, where you will see the vibrant coffee cherries and learn about the meticulous care involved in growing coffee. You will also have the chance to engage with local farmers, who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and love for coffee. Tasting a freshly brewed cup of Colombian coffee amidst the stunning backdrop of the Coffee Triangle is a truly immersive experience that showcases the dedication and expertise of the region's coffee growers.

Italy’s Espresso Culture

In Italy, coffee is more than a beverage - it's a way of life. The espresso culture in Italy is renowned for its intensity and passion, where coffee is enjoyed in its purest form. Italian coffee bars, or ‘caffs’, are vibrant social hubs where locals gather to savour a quick shot of espresso while standing at the bar.

The Italian approach to coffee emphasises simplicity and quality. An espresso is typically served with a small glass of water and is meant to be consumed quickly, allowing the rich flavours to linger on the palate. The unspoken rules of Italian coffee culture dictate that cappuccinos are for breakfast, and espresso is enjoyed throughout the day. This ritual reflects the Italian appreciation for life's simple pleasures, where coffee is both a daily necessity and a cherished tradition.

Turkish Coffee Culture

In Turkey, coffee is an integral part of social life, where it is often accompanied by fortune-telling from the coffee grounds. Turkish coffee is known for its rich, bold flavour and thick, frothy consistency. Prepared in a special pot called a ‘cezve’, it is served in small cups and enjoyed slowly, often in the company of friends and family.

The preparation of Turkish coffee is an art form in itself, with the coffee grounds and water being heated slowly to create a thick foam. The result is a strong, aromatic coffee that leaves a layer of grounds at the bottom of the cup. These grounds are used for ‘Tasseography’, a practice where the patterns left behind are interpreted to reveal the drinker's fortune.

New Zealand’s Caf Culture

New Zealand's caf culture is renowned for its innovative coffee blends and cozy, welcoming atmospheres. Known as the birthplace of the ‘flat white’, a popular coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk, New Zealand's coffee scene is a haven for coffee lovers seeking new flavours and experiences.

Local cafs in New Zealand are often family-owned establishments that pride themselves on serving high-quality coffee made from locally roasted beans. The emphasis on sustainability and community is evident in the friendly interactions between baristas and customers. Visiting a New Zealand caf is not just about drinking coffee; it's an opportunity to connect with the local culture and enjoy the relaxed, laid-back vibe that defines Kiwi hospitality.

The Elegance of Japan’s Tea Ceremonies

Japan's tea culture is a refined art form that reflects the principles of harmony, respect, and purity. The Japanese tea ceremony, or ‘chanoyu’, is a meditative experience that invites participants to step into a world of simplicity and mindfulness. Every aspect of the ceremony is carefully orchestrated, from the precise preparation of matcha, a powdered green tea, to the deliberate movements of the host.

Participating in a Japanese tea ceremony offers a glimpse into the beauty and grace of Japanese culture. The ceremony takes place in a serene tearoom, where the delicate aroma of matcha fills the air, and the sound of water being poured into the tea bowl adds to the sense of tranquillity. The tea ceremony is not just about drinking tea; it's an opportunity to experience the aesthetic and spiritual elements that define the Japanese way of life.

Hong Kong’s Ancient Tea Houses

Hong Kong’s tea culture is steeped in history, with tea houses serving as places of relaxation, conversation, and cultural exchange. In these traditional tea houses, the art of tea brewing is elevated to a fine craft, with tea masters preparing various types of tea using ancient methods.

Participating in a tea-tasting session in Hong Kong is an exploration of flavours and aromas, where each type of tea, from delicate white teas to robust ‘pu-erh’, offers a unique sensory experience. The practice of tea appreciation is a reflection of Chinese culture’s emphasis on balance and harmony, inviting visitors to slow down and savour the moment.

Morocco’s Mint Tea Rituals

In Morocco, mint tea, or ‘atay’, is a symbol of hospitality and friendship. The preparation of mint tea is a ceremonial act, where green tea is steeped with fresh mint leaves and sugar, then poured from a height to create a frothy top. This pouring technique is both an art and a practical way to mix the tea and cool it slightly before drinking.

Moroccan mint tea is typically enjoyed in the company of others, with multiple rounds being served in small glasses. The act of sharing tea is a gesture of warmth and welcome, inviting guests to relax and engage in conversation. The refreshing taste of mint tea, combined with the intricate beauty of Moroccan tea glasses, creates an experience that is both visually and sensorially captivating.

Coffee and tea offer unique ways to explore the world, providing insights into the local cultures, traditions, and stories of the places they come from. These beverages have the power to connect us with locals, each cup offering a journey into the heart of its origin. Have you experienced any unique ones? I would love to hear about them! Write to me at [email protected] to share your stories.

And now that we are talking about coffee, let me end with a question: Do you know how coffee came to India? I have done a Know the Unknown episode on it! Scan the QR code to find out more. Until next time, keep celebrating life!

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most.
