Apple Safari overview

Apple Safari is Apple's web browser that comes bundled with the most recent macOS. Safari is faster and more energy efficient than other browsers, so sites are more responsive and your notebook battery lasts longer between charges. Built-in privacy features are stronger than ever. It works with iCloud to let you browse seamlessly across all your devices. And it gives you great ways to find and share your favorites. Put it all together, and no other browser offers such a rich web experience.

Safari for Mac has a condensed and minimalistic interface that offers mac users faster, private browsing with fewer interruptions and extended battery life.

When you download Safari for Mac you will get enhanced protection against invasive malicious software and customizable private browsing options to protect your information.

While browsing privately in Safari, pages that you visit in private mode will not appear in your browsing history list.

Safari 12 is now available for macOS Sierra and High Sierra

Comes with macOS Mojave by default

safari 12 mac download

Safari 12, the latest version of Apple ’s web browser, is now available to download for people running macOS Sierra (10.12.6) and macOS High Sierra (10.13.6).

This new version of the browser, which is the default browser in the upcoming macOS Mojave (10.14) update, comes with a range of new features, and if you can’t wait until Mojave launches on September 24 you can get the updated browser for the older versions of macOS.

In fact, if you use Safari as your daily web browser then it’s a good idea to update to Safari 12 as soon as possible, as it includes security updates. To download and install Safari 12 right now, open up the Mac App Store, click on ‘Updates’ and you’ll see the Safari 12 update waiting for you there.

Safari 12 features

So, what’s new in Safari 12? Apple has included support for website icons in tabs, which makes it easier to organize and find open websites when you’re browsing with multiple tabs open, as well as password suggestions and an alert if you're using a password for a service that Safari has saved for another site.

This should encourage people to use different passwords for different websites, rather than using one password for many.

Users also have better control over how pop-up windows are handled on websites, and ad retargeting suppression has been bolstered so that it reduces advertisers' ability to identify unique Mac devices. The web browser also disables any extensions that cause it to perform more slowly by default.

So, even if you're planning on upgrading to macOS Mojave next week with Safari 12, we’d recommend installing it on your Mac as soon as possible, so that you can access these new features and benefit from the added security.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, safari 12 released for macos sierra & high sierra.

Safari icon

Apple has released Safari 12 for Mac users running macOS High Sierra and macOS Sierra.

The same Safari 12 web browser ships bundled with macOS Mojave by default, so macOS Mojave users will not find the same software update available to any computer running Mojave.

Safari 12 brings a variety of new features and changes to the Safari web browser, including support for website icons in tabs, password suggestions and an alert if you’re reusing saved passwords in Safari, support for toggling pop-up behavior on websites, ad retargeting suppression, improved security features, and Safari now defaults to disabling any extensions that could negatively impact web browsing performance.

If you’re on macOS Sierra (10.12.6) or macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) then you will find Safari 12.0 available to download now from the Mac App Store Updates tab, accessible from the  Apple menu.

Safari 12 for Mac

If you use Safari as your default web browser , or even as a backup or alternative web browser on your Mac, you should likely update to the latest version available to you.

The next major version of Mac system software, MacOS Mojave (10.14), is set to be released to the general public on September 24, and MacOS Mojave includes Safari 12.0 as part of the broader system software update. Thus if you plan on immediately updating to macOS Mojave, you may find it less urgent to update the Safari web browser in Sierra or High Sierra since you’ll be updating system software soon anyway. For the rest of Mac users or anyone who plans on delaying the Mojave update, updating to Safari 12 is recommended.

Many other software updates are available in the Apple ecosystem as well, including iOS 12 , WatchOS 5, tvOS 12 , and many updates to various apps like Pages, Numbers, Keynote, as well as tons of third party apps. Over the next few weeks, it’s a good idea to periodically check for any software updates for both these new system software versions and for updates to the apps you use and rely on.

if you right click the webloc file you can choose open with… which does not crash the finder.

Don’t you mean “Terminal Command: qlmanage -r”? I think it should be qlmanage, not qlmaange

Great catch, yep!.

SOLUTION ——– -currently working for OS X 10.12.6 -Finder doesn’t crash when .weblock is clicked. -Safari is able to launch the url. -However, Quicklook views .weblocs as plain text files, bypassing the web preview generation.

Overview ——–

Step 1 File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist Remove: com.apple.weblocation

Step 2 File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist Add: com.apple.internet-location Location:

QLGenerator LSItemContentTypes

public.data com.apple.internet-location

Step 3 Copy File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator Move Copy:/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator

Step 4 Terminal Command: qlmaange -r

Basic instructions for editing the types of files: ————————————————– ex.Step 1

Locate File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/ -Right Click and select “Show Package Contents”

Copy File to desktop: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist …Enter PW to allow changes Duplicate File on desktop & rename: original.Contents.info.plist -Edit desktop/Contents.info.plist Remove: com.apple.weblocation

– Save, move both files to replace original File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist …Enter PW to allow changes

PLEASE NOTE: Step 4 Terminal Command: qlmaange -r SHOULD BE: qlmanage -r

I update to Safari 12 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 ! Not run old Safari 11 files .webloc on Safari 12 and if you want rename it on Finder crash and the window collapse !! Spotlight crash if you don’t disable Find in Bookmarks and History Problems with Extensions … I go back to Safari 11.1.2 (disable SIP with Terminal (csrutil disable) on Recovery OS mode … and reinstall Safari 11.1.2 Sierra.pkg)

There are random pages where the content isn’t loading? or it’s showing only as white blocks. So now using other browsers until this gets sorted.

Can you give an example where that happens? I have not seen that issue with Safari 12 of blank pages. Try clearing out all of your Safari caches/settings and start over?

Since updated to Safari 12, it stop working and each time i try to open it, my whole mac starts to work as slow as a nail

Since this was updated, my Safari 12 has not been working. Initially my browser bar was gone (which it still is), and now when I click on any of my favorites, I get a blank page. Nothing loads.

Disabling unsigned extensions is obnoxious. Was that really a problem?

I’m not positive, but I really feel like Safari 12 has negatively impacted my battery life. I’ve made no other changes in my computer at all since updating, and I’ve just been noticing my battery level dropping quicker doing the same tasks I always do. I can’t see anyone else talking about this, so maybe it’s just me.

Having same problem as FarmerBob. In column view, clicking on a Safari/.webloc icon crashes Finder instantly.

Hitting get info on a Safari/.webloc icon shows that “open with” is Paparazzi. It’s greyed out so you can’t change it.

Not great solutions: Delete Paparazzi (or whichever app may be culprit) Disable preview column (View > Show View Options)

BAD UPDATE! Since updating to this version, if I select a .webloc file in a window where the Finder would have to make a preview, the Finder crashes every time.

The same thing happens to me ! I tried deleting the associated quicklook preference files, but it didn’t help.

I have this problem, too. I had some success by changing file suffix from .webloc to .url.

1) Control-click on the webloc file, or group of files.

2) Select “Rename” from the fly-out menu.

3) Use the curser to highlight “webloc” suffix and type “url” (without quotes).

4) When you do this, a pop-up message appears asking, “Are you sure you want to change the extension from “.webloc” to “.url”?” If you make this change, your document may open in a different application. To proceed, click on the “Use .url” button on the bottom right of the pop-up.

While not a great solution, it should stop the finder crash/relaunch.

Btw, there is a free application called “Webloc Finagler” that will do this webloc/url conversion for you via drag and drop—I stumbled upon the app in the apple discussion board. All credit goes to developer Mark Douma.

Apple Discussion link: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11978417#message11978417

Direct link to the app (110kb): http://www.markdouma.com/developer/WeblocFinagler.zip

Playing a game full screen, I get repeated errors saying it looks like you are trying to type a text which is not supported in full screen. Exit full screen or stay. That’s fine for the first time, but repeated over and over every two seconds is disruptive. I’m not typing anything ! Just using my finger to move items as designed.

Chrome. Here I come. Grrrrrrrr

After the update my adblock plus stopped to work, so I have to disabled it and install adblock. Works fine again. It says you web browser may run slow with adblock, but I prefer a bit slow that load tons of ads.

Do NOT do this update, many sites I go to regularly do NOT work under it.

What problems are you having with Safari 12? What kind of errors?

Now my search engine DDG, lost its ad blocker too. I’m not a techi, but this ticks me off. Now I have pop ups. That stinks.

Yeah! But how to remove Safari 12 and back to for example 11.1.2? Because you know… java plugins and stuff :)

What he said. How do you go back to Safari 11?

double ditto!

Apple launches public beta of macOS Monterey, bringing updates to FaceTime and Safari

Lots of tweaks here and there.

By Monica Chin , a senior reviewer covering laptops and other gadgets. Monica was a writer for Tom's Guide and Business Insider before joining The Verge in 2020.

A MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey sits on a table in front of a window. The screen displays the Quick note app on top of a pink and purple background.

The public beta of macOS 12 Monterey, Apple’s next big macOS release, is now available for download. The operating system has the same general look and feel as its predecessor, macOS 11 Big Sur , but it brings some new features and a number of tweaks to Apple’s most popular services.

Before we get into this, friendly reminder that Monterey is, for now, a beta. It may not be the best idea to install on a primary device, as you might encounter bugs, unfinished features, and incompatibility with third-party apps. If you will be installing the program on your daily driver, make sure you’ve backed up anything you can’t afford to mess with first.

For those who take the leap and install the public beta, the component Apple seems most excited about is its updates to FaceTime. My favorite of these is Portrait Mode, which blurs the background behind you while you’re speaking on a call (similarly to the iPhone’s feature with the same name ). Portrait Mode didn’t always get everything — sometimes when there were multiple different surfaces behind me, it seemed to get a bit confused and leave some parts un-blurred. But it wasn’t difficult to find areas where the feature worked just fine. Apple says Portrait Mode will be available for adoption in third-party apps as well, but we’ll have to wait for them to issue updates to support it.

  • How to install the macOS Monterey public beta

A screenshot of a MacBook screen where a user is on a FaceTime call with a blurred bright bedroom background. A FaceTime drop-down menu is open in the top right with Portrait selected.

Even though it’s had the ability to make group calls for a few years, I’ve always viewed FaceTime as a tool for calling one person at a time. But Monterey introduces a few other features that are clearly meant to make the tool a stronger Zoom competitor, conducive to meetings and larger calls. It now supports a grid view and Spatial Audio (which makes other people’s voices sound like they’re coming from the area on the screen where their face is positioned). You can generate a link to a FaceTime call ahead of time (the same way you generate a Zoom link), and users of Android and Windows can join from their browsers. And a new Voice Isolation feature uses machine learning to mitigate background noise while you’re speaking.

There’s a new feature called SharePlay, which is like Netflix Party or Scener but for FaceTime. Like Netflix Party, it allows you and other people on your FaceTime call to watch content from certain streaming services together by syncing everyone’s video playback and controls. (So we’re both watching the video on our own devices, with our own accounts. But when I pause or start, you pause or start as well.) SharePlay isn’t a new idea, but it’ll certainly be convenient to have on FaceTime. While the list of supported services includes some big players (such as Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, Twitch, Pluto TV, and — hilariously — TikTok), it doesn’t appear to include Netflix, which is the one streaming service I and all of my friends and family reliably have in common. Until that’s added to the roster, I don’t see myself using this that often.

A new feature that I do think I’ll be using a lot is Quick Note. Quick Note gives you an easy way to take notes on an article you’re reading (or items you’re viewing in Maps, Photos, or other apps). You can right-click highlighted text to add it to a Quick Note, and it’ll appear there along with a link to the source. (You can press Fn+Q to pull up a blank one as well.)

Quick Notes sync across devices and are available in a specific “Quick Notes” folder in the Notes app. The handiest thing, I think, is that if you’ve got an app open where you’ve previously created a Quick Note, you can hover your cursor in the bottom-right corner of the screen and a thumbnail of the note will pop up.

A screenshot of a MacBook Pro screen. The Verge’s review of the Razer Blade 14 is open in Safari. A paragraph is higlighted with “Add to Quick Note” in an adjacent drop-down menu selected. A Quick Note is open on the left side of the screen with more text and a link to the article.

Apple has introduced a few “continuity” features that are meant to make it easier to use Macs alongside other Apple devices. Arguably the most exciting one, Universal Control , won’t be ready until a future beta. What you can try now is AirPlay, which has made its way to macOS for the first time. AirPlay makes it easier to cast content to a Mac computer: it can mirror or extend your iPhone’s screen, for example, or can function as an AirPlay 2 speaker. I was able to set this up easily (you just need to wait until the devices detect each other and then enter a code on your phone), and it worked well.

A screenshot of a macOS notification that reads “Airplay: Look What You Made Me Do would like to AirPlay to this Mac.”

Safari has some tweaks, mainly concerning tabs. The URL bar now lives next to your tabs, which gives you more browsing space. Tabs have a rounder appearance now, and you can click one to reveal its page’s full address.

The new feature that I think is quite useful is tab groups. The way this works is that if you have, say, five tabs open, you can click a little icon in the top-left corner to make them into a “tab group”. Later on, if you open the sidebar on the left, you’ll see the group listed in the “Tab Groups” section; click on it, and Safari will reopen those five tabs. Also in that sidebar lives a bookmarks list, a reading list, and a list of links that have been shared with you in Messages. You can test-drive the new Safari browser in older versions of macOS without having to update to the Monterey beta by installing the Safari Technology Preview .

A screenshot of Safari open on a MacBook Pro. A Verge Windows 11 video is open on YouTube. The sidebar is open showing two tab groups: Verge Videos and Verge Articles.

There are a number of other odds and ends built into macOS Monterey. Shortcuts is available on macOS, Focus allows you to filter notifications based on the task you’re doing, it’s gotten easier to save photos that you receive in Messages, etc. I look forward to digging more into these features for our full review, but the things I’ve highlighted here are the ones I see being the most immediately impactful to daily use.

The phrase “odds and ends” really sums up my impressions after using macOS Monterey for a few days. macOS Big Sur completely overhauled the Mac experience. That’s not the case here (which is fine — not every update needs to be a revolution). Apple seems to have made some tweaks here and some tweaks there. My reactions have largely been: “Alright, that could be handy.” Which is fair. I’ll take handy.

Here’s the list of devices that will support macOS Monterey:

  • iMac ( late 2015 and later )
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro ( late 2013 and later )
  • Mac Mini ( late 2014 and later )
  • MacBook Pro ( early 2015 and later )
  • MacBook Air ( early 2015 and later )
  • MacBook ( early 2016 and later )

Notably, this doesn’t include a few models that did get Big Sur last year, including the 2013 MacBook Air, the late-2013 MacBook Pro, and the 2014 iMac.

How to update safari on mac.

How do you update an app with no update button?

Quick Links

Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

Related: Why You Should Update All Your Software

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

Apple releases macos 12.2 with safari security patch, improved promotion scrolling.

Avatar for Michael Potuck

After a beta period of just over a month, Apple has officially made the latest macOS release available for all users. macOS 12.2 arrives with an important security fix for Safari, improved scrolling in Safari for the new MacBook Pro, and a new native Apple Music app.

Update: As it turns out, macOS 12.2 comes with 13 important security updates:

  • macOS 12.2 patches 13 major security flaws impacting Safari, root privileges, iCloud, more

macOS 12.2 is starting to appear for users via OTA. Head to System Preferences > Software update to check if it’s available for your Mac. Apple has also released a new update for those still on Big Sur with macOS 11.6.3.

While it doesn’t come with many changes, macOS 12.2 includes a security fix for a serious Safari flaw along with a few others improvements and fixes.

The Safari exploit was first discovered earlier this month that can leak users’ browsing history as well as Google account IDs. This was first patched by Apple in the iOS 15.3 and macOS 12.2 RC along with today’s official release.

Another fix with macOS 12.2 improves scrolling in Safari with ProMotion on the new MacBook Pro.

And seen since the first macOS 12.2 beta, there’s a  new, native Apple Music app . As we previously  noted :

Some parts of the Music app were already native, such as the music library. But now Mac users will notice that searching for new songs in Apple Music is much faster as the results pages are displayed with a native interface instead of as a webpage. Scrolling between elements has also become smoother with the beta app, and trackpad gestures are now more responsive. Comparing both apps side by side, the beta Music app may look simpler with some interface effects missing – this is probably because Apple is rebuilding everything and it will take a while before the native version gets all these visual effects back.

Notice anything new in today’s release? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter  @9to5Mac .

The internet traffic between our managed macOS Mojave laptops and the Apple Software Updates website is blocked for security reasons. So I can not use the regular System Preferences - Software Update to update native macOS software.

This is not an issue for me, because every time Apple release a Software Update, I wait a week or so and I visit the following URL https://support.apple.com/downloads and I download the specific package (in .dmg format), I save the .dmg package into a USB Stick and I update the macOS laptops and I am good to go.

Now, the problem is that Apple just released an important security update https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212808 just for Safari 14.1.2.

My question is since that I believe this time it is just Safari the issue, is Apple going to publish just the Safari .dmg package update on the regular https://support.apple.com/downloads website? If not, how can I download just the Safari 14.1.2 in .dmg/.pkg format so I can install into our macOS Mojave laptops?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Here is the Apple Url where you can get the URL for the recent 14.1.2 Safari update for Mojave,

https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.15seed-10.15-10.14-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz

This opens up a very long list of Apple updates going back to 2015. The most recent updates appear at the bottom of the list,

so you can go straight to the bottom of the list and slowly scroll up till you get to the download you want. Please see the screenshot below,

safari 12 mac download

The highlighted area is the address to copy and paste into a browser window.

Another quicker way to find the desired download link is to click on Edit in the menubar of the browser

and go to Find > Find... At the top of the browser window you should now see an area where you can enter

some keyword(s) to narrow the search, for example Safari14.1.2Mojave would result in this,

safari 12 mac download

You can see the search has highlighted three files that match. The one ending in .pkg is the one to download.

We are fellow users and have no knowledge of future Apple business or product planning. There is no standalone, full installer for the current version of Safari, as it is only available bundled with the operating system, or via a Security update.

Safari for Mac

Apple’s browser tries to keep pace

Safari

The fortunes of browsers rise and fall, but recent versions of Safari are looking good. With positive reviews in terms of speed and security, many have looked to the browser for an alternative to other tools they’re losing faith in. Is Safari as good as it seems, or is it still the poor cousin of other, flashier apps?

A fast, secure browser for all iOS devices

Good looks, security, and speed in a browser

Safari hasn’t traditionally made the top of the list when it comes to popular browsers. For many years, it was just what Mac users had to put up with, considered by many to be the price you paid for choosing Apple. Is that about to change?

The first thing you notice when you open Safari is that it’s a slick, attractive browser that looks fresh and modern. It takes its color scheme from your system settings, so if you have Dark Mode enabled, Safari looks cool. If you have Light Mode enabled, it will have a traditional light silver Mac appearance.

Your first steps with Safari will be familiar and easy. You can do everything you’d expect: set it as your default browser (or not), add your favorites, import your bookmarks, and check the settings to make sure everything is as you like it. You’ll also have the option to import the settings and bookmarks from your old browser and the process is easy.

Safari has a few interesting features. It’s particularly nicely integrated with Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, so if you use these apps you’ll find using Safari a smooth experience. It also has extensive security and privacy options, allowing you a tailored in-browser experience without having to turn to extensions or 3rd party apps.

Another favorite is the Reading List, which allows you to save articles to read later, even if you’re offline. The Reading List also offers you a setting that converts articles into an easy-to-read, ad-free version which is great if you’re an avid reader.

Even though Safari was originally intended for the Appleverse, it works fine on other sites, even ones like Google Docs. Testing shows the browser to be light and fast. In tests, it’s not the fastest but average users won’t notice. The start-up takes only seconds and load time for even content-heavy pages feels fast with no noticeable lag. Being an Apple product, Safari also has excellent support and documentation available should you ever run into problems.

Where can you run this program?

This version of Safari is for Mac and iOS.  You need Mac OS Sierra or higher.

Is there a better alternative?

Whether or not there is a better alternative to Safari for Mac is hard to answer. There are certainly faster browsers that you can customize more, like Chrome and Firefox. Where Safari is strong, however, is that it is built for the Apple universe. If you operate almost entirely on Mac, it makes sense to use its purpose-built browser. Safari is also good on security and for this reason alone, many would rate it ahead of Chrome.

Safari is a solid browser that can match the competition on nearly all fronts. It’s attractive, reasonably fast, and does pretty much everything that you’d expect from a browser. It also offers a few advantages in terms of Apple-specific features and security, which is nothing to sneeze at. It’s not the fastest (that would be Firefox), or the most customizable (that’s Chrome), but it’s fast enough and, for many, that’s all that’s needed.

Should you download it?

Yes, download Safari if you want a solid browser that’s purpose-built for Mac. If you need more speed or move between iOS, Android, and Windows, you may want to look at Chrome, Firefox, or new kid on the block, Brave.

  • Strong on security and privacy
  • Works very well in the Apple universe
  • Reading List is a great feature
  • Slower than some other browsers
  • Not highly customizable
  • Some websites will not work with Safari

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

safari 12 mac download

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari 12 mac download

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Customisation

Putting the you in url..

Safari is more customisable than ever. Organise your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favourite features — like Reading List, Favourites, iCloud Tabs and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

safari 12 mac download

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favourites, cookies and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

safari 12 mac download

Web apps let you save your favourite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.

Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favourite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.

Save and organise your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them, and switch between them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.

Designed to help your work flow..

Built-in tools create a browsing experience that’s far more immersive, intuitive and immediate. Get detailed information about a subject in a photo with just a click, select text within any image, instantly translate an entire web page, and quickly take notes wherever you are on a site — without having to switch apps.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari 12 mac download

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

Learn more about Apple Pay

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari 12 mac download

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your usernames, passkeys, passwords and credit card numbers, and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favourite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimisations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

Your Guide to Private Browsing in Safari

Private browsing is often misunderstood, but it can be a helpful feature if you know what’s what.

Quick Links

What private browsing does in safari, how to use safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to use safari private browsing on a mac, how to disable safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to disable safari private browsing on a mac, key takeaways.

  • Private Browsing in Safari hides browsing history, autofill details, downloads, and locks tabs after inactivity.
  • Safari on Mac groups private and non-private tabs, while on iPhone it shows all tabs regardless of mode.
  • To use Private Browsing in Safari, identify it by a dark address bar, "Private" indicator, or "Private" next to the site URL.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

  • Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
  • Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
  • Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
  • Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
  • Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

  • The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
  • On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
  • On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

  • Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
  • Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
  • If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

  • Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
  • Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
  • Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Screen Time .
  • Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
  • If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
  • Tap Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

  • Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
  • Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
  • Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
  • Click Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.

How To Use Delta Emulator and Play Nintendo Games on iOS

Nick deCourville

  • While emulators are legal in the U.S., ROMs are a bit more complicated.
  • The Delta app requires iOS 14 or later.
  • The app is also available for iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro.

safari 12 mac download

Gamers, your time is here: the Delta emulator app is now available for iOS, and with it arrives a wealth of emulation and features. This expansive app hosts an impressive selection of classic video game consoles, providing the ability to play thousands of retro games on your iPhone. Below, I’ll show you everything you need to know to start gaming.

What to Know About the Delta Emulator

Apple finally eased restrictions on emulators, and Delta is the second Apple-approved option to be officially listed on the App Store. What I love about it is that it’s 100% free. You can play a wide variety of retro Nintendo games without having to sit through ads—note that very few free emulators offer an ad-free experience. You can learn more about the Delta emulator here .

What Emulators Are Available on the Delta App?

The following emulators (game systems) are available through the Delta app:

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Super Nintendo Entertain System (SNES)
  • Nintendo 64
  • Game Boy and Game Boy Color
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Nintendo DS

How To Get Nintendo DS Games on Delta Game Emulator?

While every emulator available within the app works as is, there are specific BIOS files that you’ll need for the Nintendo DS emulator. I can’t link to them for copyright reasons, but you can easily find them on any search engine. After you download the necessary files, remember to select Save to Files from the Share menu.

The BIOS files needed for the Nintendo DS emulator are as follows:

  • firmware.bin

Time needed:  2 minutes

Once you’ve downloaded these files, adding them to the Delta emulator is easy—here’s how:

safari 12 mac download

From here, the Nintendo DS emulator will be fully operational. However, note that you may need to use iTunes File Transfer to add games—DS ROMs are typically several gigabytes large. Downloading them through your iPhone may be a hassle, so I’ll cover this more below.

How to Download ROMs for the Delta Emulator

Again, pirating officially licensed games breaks copyright laws, so I won’t be linking to them. However, homebrew games, and even some ROM hacks, are typically okay to share. Places like Homebrew Hub can have a library of legal, independently created games to play.

ROMs will either be in a compressed file (such as .ZIP) or a rather obvious file extension (.GBA for a Game Boy Advanced game, for example). I’ve had no problems importing both, but mileage may vary on compressed files. Should one give you issues, try extracting the file.

With that in mind, there are two primary ways to add ROMs to the Delta app: either through iTunes/Folder or the iOS Files app. Let’s take a look at both, as one can be easier than the other.

1. Adding ROMs Via the iOS Files App

Personally, this is the easiest way to add ROMs since it doesn’t require a computer. However, guiding your ROM downloads to the right place can be tricky.

For this how-to guide, I’ll download the game Sips from Homebrew Hub.

  • First, navigate to the Homebrew Hub page for Sips .
  • Scroll down and click Download Rom .

This method can be spotty depending on the browser you use, so make sure the ROM file makes its way to your Files app.

2. Adding ROMs Using iTunes

This method may be easier for those who have a hard time downloading ROMs directly on their iPhone, although you’ll have to use a Mac or PC. Let’s take a look.

  • First, download the ROM.
  • Next open iTunes .
  • Navigate to the iPhone icon.
  • Select File Sharing from the left-hand column.
  • Click the Delta app and then Drag and Drop the ROMs you want into this section.

3. Adding ROMs Using Finder

If your Mac is running macOS Catalina or later, you’ll need to use Finder.

  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac, then select your iPhone from a Finder window.

As you can probably tell, it’s pretty easy to add ROMs to the Delta app once you have the files in the correct location. The hardest part is probably getting them there.

How to Add Emulator Skins

One of the cooler features of Delta is it lets you change emulator skins. This is really easy to do, plus you can find tons of skins on sites like Delta GitHub . Adding skins is similar to adding ROMs, so again, ensure the skins are in your Files folder.

  • You can now select the imported skin/s on Delta.

How to Remap Controllers in Delta

If you need to remap a controller, simply follow these steps:

  • Select NES to open the drop-down menu and choose the controller you want to edit.
  • Now, tap the button you want to change and press a button on the physical controller to remap it.

Controllers Supported By Delta App

The Delta app will support any third-party controller that works with iOS. However, here are some popular examples:

  • Nintendo Switch Online Controller
  • Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X and S)
  • Xbox Adapter Controller
  • Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
  • Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth Model 1708
  • Playstation 4 and 5 Wireless Controllers

Adding a controller is usually as simple as navigating to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone, checking if the controller is discoverable, and then selecting it from the Other Devices list.

Additional Controls and Options

Once a game is running, you can open an additional menu that lets you fast-forward through scenes, hold down buttons, and even enable cheats. You’ll see this menu on the main screen while playing. It’s also where you’ll find your options to save and load games. You can save games within emulators, although I suggest using the Delta app’s Save function—it’s more reliable and accurate. Take a look around this section to see what you find.

While Android users may laugh over Apple slowly entering the world of emulation, the fact is it’s never too late to start. You may also want to know about the best Playstation 2 emulators for iOS .
