Russian Federation Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

Russia Travel Insurance Requirements

The U.S. Embassy Moscow does not advise travel to Russia as the embassy has limited capacity to assist U.S. travelers due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There is currently also a Level 4 travel advisory for the country by the U.S Department of State, advising U.S citizens not to travel to Russia due to ongoing conflict.

Travelers from foreign countries are required to have a visa to travel to Russia. For travelers from outside countries to obtain the required visa for entry into Russia, medical travel insurance is a necessity. The policy is required to last for the traveler’s entire trip to Russia, but there is not a minimum amount needed.

Squaremouth’s Travel Insurance Recommendations

Although there is not a specific dollar amount required to visit Russia, Squaremouth recommends travelers buy a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage, and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. These are the standard amounts recommended for international travel. This coverage is reimbursement-based, meaning the traveler is typically required to pay their medical expenses upfront and then file a claim for reimbursement when they return home.

The Emergency Medical benefit of travel insurance can reimburse travelers for the costs of medical treatment in the event of an illness or injury during their trip. This includes physician services, ambulance expenses, and other costs of treatment.

The Medical Evacuation benefit can transport a traveler to the nearest adequate hospital in the event of a medical emergency. If the treating physician determines the traveler should return home for better treatment, this benefit can also cover those costs.

While medical benefits are the only requirement, many travelers may opt to cover their trip costs too. Travelers have the option to purchase Trip Cancellation coverage to protect their prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. This benefit can cover events such as cancellations or interruptions due to sickness, weather, or terrorism.

Moscow, Russia: Safety and Travel Insurance Advice

Visitors Insurance Coverage in Russia for Travelers

For those traveling to Russia for holidays, work, or educational purposes, a high-quality travel insurance plan is a necessity. You want to make sure you have coverage for emergency medical expenses, trip interruption, medical evacuations, and more. Some plans also cover trip cancellation, which will reimburse you if you can’t travel for covered reasons. As of May 2024, our travel insurance products cannot be purchased for travel to Russia due to the ongoing conflicts in that region.

Safety Tips for Visitors to Russia

Despite being a developed country, visitors and foreigners should not drink tap water in Russia as the tap water may cause diseases due to improper sanitation. Regular bathing with the water is not a cause for concern, but you should use bottled water for drinking and for brushing your teeth. The water can be particularly high risk in St. Petersburg, where the pipes are very old. In case of an incident while traveling or living there, it’s important to make sure you have international medical insurance .

Visitors are also advised not to drink unlabeled vodka. Russia is known for its love of vodka, but bootleg vodka can cause serious harm and even death. It may contain shoe polish, sawdust, paint thinners, or other dangerous ingredients. Ensure you only drink vodka purchased from a store and is sealed and labeled properly.

In Russia, especially in the major cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, passports should be kept on your person in a secure, hidden place (such as a money belt). It is important to have your passport with you if you interact with the police, as not having it may cause them to harass, fine, or arrest you.

If you need emergency assistance while traveling in Russia, call the single emergency hotline at 112. You will be connected to an emergency call center that will field requests for medical or police assistance.

Vaccines Required and Necessary Medicines when Traveling to Russia

All travelers to Russia should be up-to-date on routine vaccines such as MMR (measles-mumps-rubella), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio, flu, etc. Visit the Center for Disease Control website for current information. Travelers are encouraged to get the Hepatitis A shot due to the high risk of consuming contaminated food and water. Hepatitis B is recommended if you plan on having sex or getting a tattoo or piercing. Many vaccine clinics offer Hepatitis A and B together in the same shot. The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors in remote areas. Finally, travelers spending time outdoors or with animals should also get the rabies vaccine.

Talk to your doctor about other issues you might encounter, such as motion sickness and jet lag. On long flights, be sure to walk around the cabin and drink plenty of fluids. It is also important for visitors to be aware that AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in Russia. Many citizens are not educated when it comes to sexual health, so it’s vital to be proactively protected and educated yourself.

When Should You Travel to Russia?

Due to warmer temperatures, the main tourist season in Russia is July and August. This is also the time of “White Nights,” in which the sun doesn’t fully set in some areas of the country. However, crowded cities can become uncomfortably hot during these months. Winter is the off-season, which means better bargains, better service, and fewer crowds.

In March and April, as the snow melts, the roads become slushy and dangerous. In May and June, Moscow and St. Petersburg have festivals to welcome warmer weather, including the Ballet Award Festival, Chekov International Theater Festival, and the Sobinov Memorial Festival of Music. Airfare is generally cheaper during November, March, and late August than at other times of the year because the weather is uncertain during those months.

Weather Conditions

Contrary to what you might believe, Russia is not just full of ice and snow. The climate is actually quite agreeable in spring, early summer, and fall. However, Russia gets quite cold from November to February, and winter can bring large amounts of snowfall. During the winter months, it is recommended that you bring a heavy winter coat, gloves, hat, scarf, and other winter gear to stay warm. Falling snow and enormous icicles can be deadly, so avoid walking directly under building overhangs. Slip-and-fall accidents are quite common due to icy conditions, so wear sturdy boots with good traction. Always plan ahead and check the weather report to avoid any weather-related injuries during your stay.

Safety While Traveling Around Russia

Russian drivers are known for their extremely high speed. In the cities, it is important to know that pedestrians do not have the right-of-way. Heavy traffic may cause drivers to drive on the curb or sidewalk to avoid delay.

When traveling by train, be vigilant of your surroundings, as other travelers might see you as an easy target. If other passengers ask you to drink and dine with them, be sure to stay sober and keep a watchful eye on your possessions, as train hoaxes can target tourists and expatriates.

Enjoy Your Visit – Be Safe and Have Fun

Russia is a fun and interesting place to visit, and with a little precaution, planning, and trip insurance protection , travelers can have a worry-free trip of a lifetime.

Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning nine time zones across Eurasia. Due to its massive size, the country is home to a variety of landscapes and ethnic groups. The country is known for its vast natural resources and is one of the largest oil and gas producers globally. These reasons and many more are what draw tourists, missionary groups , volunteers, and  expatriates alike to visit Russia for long and short periods. Before taking off, travelers should be aware of safety and health issues so that they can enjoy their visit to Russia.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Russia

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Russia. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Russia can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Travel Insurance

To obtain a Russian visa, you should submit to the Russian Consulate or visa centre Travel Insurance with 30,000 € (or $30,000) coverage issued by a reliable insurance company.

In most cases you need to purchase an insurance policy “for one trip” which is valid for the entire period of your stay in Russia.

If you need a double or multiple-entry visa, you can purchase an insurance policy only for the duration of your first trip, for the next trip you will need to purchase a new policy.

For those who plan visiting Russia frequently, it is more convenient to purchase an “annual insurance policy” for the total number of days of stay in all trips, the maximum insurance coverage period is 1 year; if necessary, you can purchase a policy for the next year.

Find out the price of the insurance policy, order and pay it online on our website. The policy will be sent to your e-mail within 15 minutes (during office hours).

Russia Travel - Experience Russian Culture & Heritage

Traveling to Russia can be an exciting and enriching experience, given its rich history, diverse culture, and vast landscapes. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Visa Requirements: Most travelers to Russia will need a visa to enter the country. The process can be a bit lengthy, so it’s advisable to start early. Check the requirements with the nearest Russian consulate or embassy in your country.

Weather Considerations: Russia experiences a wide range of climates, from bitterly cold winters to warm summers. The weather can vary significantly depending on the region you’re visiting, so pack accordingly.

Language: Russian is the official language, and while English is spoken in tourist areas and by younger generations, it may not be widely understood in more remote areas. Learning some basic Russian phrases can be helpful.

Currency: The currency used in Russia is the Russian Ruble (RUB). It’s a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller purchases and in more rural areas.

Safety: Like any travel destination, it’s essential to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings. While Russia is generally safe for tourists, be cautious of pickpocketing in crowded areas and avoid political demonstrations.

Cultural Etiquette: Russians appreciate politeness and respect for their customs and traditions. It’s customary to greet people with a firm handshake and maintain eye contact. Removing your shoes when entering someone’s home is also common practice.

Transportation: Russia has an extensive network of trains, buses, and domestic flights, making it relatively easy to travel between cities. The Trans-Siberian Railway is a popular option for those looking to experience the vastness of the country.

Attractions: Russia is home to many iconic attractions, including the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the historic city of Kazan. Don’t forget to explore the diverse natural landscapes, from the mountains of the Caucasus to the shores of Lake Baikal.

Health and Safety: Make sure to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. It’s also advisable to drink bottled water and be cautious about consuming street food to avoid gastrointestinal issues.

Respect Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with Russian laws and customs to avoid any misunderstandings. For example, public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and smoking is prohibited in many public places.

By keeping these tips in mind and approaching your travels with an open mind and sense of adventure, you’re sure to have a memorable experience exploring all that Russia has to offer.

What to expect as tourist travelers visiting Russia?

Russia offers a diverse experience for every traveler.

Traveling to Russia as a tourist can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it’s also important to be prepared for certain aspects of the country’s culture, customs, and practical considerations. Here’s what you can expect:

Visa Requirements: Most tourists will need a visa to enter Russia. Make sure to check the specific requirements and apply for your visa well in advance of your trip.

Language: Russian is the official language, and while English is spoken in major tourist areas and by younger generations, it may not be widely understood in more remote or rural areas. It’s helpful to learn some basic Russian phrases or carry a translation app.

Weather: Russia has a diverse climate, so the weather can vary greatly depending on when and where you visit. Winters can be extremely cold, especially in Siberia, while summers can be warm and pleasant, particularly in European Russia. Pack accordingly based on the season and region.

Cultural Differences: Russian culture may differ from what you’re accustomed to. It’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. For example, it’s customary to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home, and it’s polite to bring a small gift when visiting someone’s house.

Safety: Like any country, Russia has its safe and less safe areas. Exercise caution in crowded tourist areas to avoid pickpocketing and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Keep your belongings secure and be vigilant in crowded places like markets and public transportation.

Transportation: Russia has an extensive transportation network, including trains, buses, and metros. Moscow and St. Petersburg have efficient metro systems, while long-distance trains can take you to various parts of the country. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available in major cities.

Cuisine: Russian cuisine is diverse and hearty, with dishes like borscht (beet soup), pelmeni (dumplings), and blini (pancakes). Be open to trying new foods, and don’t miss out on sampling local specialties in different regions.

Currency: The currency used in Russia is the Russian ruble (RUB). Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash, especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

Sights and Attractions: Russia is home to a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, including iconic landmarks like the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Trans-Siberian Railway. Plan your itinerary in advance to make the most of your time.

Hospitality: Russians are known for their hospitality and warmth towards guests. Don’t be surprised if strangers strike up conversations with you or offer to help if you look lost. Embrace the opportunity to connect with locals and learn more about their culture.

Visiting Russia can be a memorable and rewarding experience, offering insights into a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Just remember to plan ahead, stay respectful, and keep an open mind to fully enjoy all that this vast and diverse country has to offer.

Why should I buy Travel Insurance for visiting Russia?

Russia travel insurance is a prudent coverage choice.

Travel insurance is important for any trip, but buying Travel Insurance for Russia  in important for several reasons:

Medical Emergencies : Travel insurance covers medical expenses incurred due to accidents or illnesses during your trip. In a country like Russia where healthcare costs can be high for foreigners, having insurance can save you from significant financial burden in case of unexpected medical emergencies. Trip Cancellation/Interruption : Travel plans can sometimes change unexpectedly due to various reasons such as illness, natural disasters, or political unrest. Travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip. Lost or Stolen Belongings : Travel insurance provides coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and personal belongings. In a foreign country like Russia, where you might be carrying valuable items or dealing with crowded places, this coverage can be invaluable. Emergency Evacuation : In case of a serious medical emergency or a natural disaster, travel insurance can cover the cost of emergency evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility. Travel Delays : If your flight is delayed or canceled, travel insurance can compensate you for additional expenses such as accommodation, meals, and transportation. Legal Assistance : Travel insurance may offer legal assistance and support in case you encounter legal issues during your trip. Adventure Activities : If you plan to engage in hazardous adventure sports or activities during your trip to Russia, such as trekking, whitewater rafting, or paragliding, travel insurance can provide coverage for injuries or accidents related to these activities. Peace of Mind : Lastly, having travel insurance provides peace of mind knowing that you’re financially protected against unforeseen circumstances during your trip.

Travel Insurance for Russia

Explore moscow and st petersburg with the right cover for your holiday  .

Russia is the biggest country in the world and offers plenty for holidaymakers to explore, with each city providing new experiences and sights to see.

According to the United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation , the country ranked ninth in Europe for tourist numbers in 2018 with 24.6 million international visitors.

Moscow and St Petersburg are two of the busier cities for holidaymakers, but there is much more to see if you are keen to explore further. Kizhi Island, Vladivostok and Sochi are all stunning destinations to head to if you are planning a trip and they all have unique spots to enjoy.

If you are keen to travel and discover what the country has to offer, then make sure that you have travel insurance in place in case something happens during your trip.

Do I need a visa and travel insurance for Russia?

Travel insurance is essential for a trip to Russia and helps ensure that you have adequate cover for emergency medical costs, as well as protection for your luggage and potential flight delays. Columbus Direct offers both single trip and annual multi-trip policies , and they can be tailored to suit your needs. This includes getting optional add-ons for winter sports , golf cover and extra protection for gadgets that you take with you on holiday.

If you plan to travel to the country, then you will need to apply for a visa from the Russian embassy. All UK citizens aged 12 or over will need to get their fingerprints scanned as part of the application, which involves visiting a visa application centre in the UK. Your visa will include your passport details as well as the dates of your stay. Your passport should also have at least six months remaining at the time that your visa expires. You might also be required to show that you have an insurance policy that is valid for the entirety of your trip.

When visiting as part of a cruise, you don’t require a visa if you are there for less than 72 hours and the tour has been booked through an official company.

Vaccinations

Specific vaccinations aren’t required , but you are advised to ensure that your primary courses and boosters are up to date, such as MMR and the flu vaccine. The NHS website also suggests that you could also consider boosters and vaccines for other illnesses such as diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and rabies. If you are unsure whether you should get vaccinations, it is worth checking with a GP ahead of your trip. Holidaymakers should also be careful in areas with a high altitude, as it you can sometimes experience negative effects, and you should look out for show signs of Acute Mountain Sickness if you are feeling unwell.

Is Russia part of Europe for travel insurance?

When it comes to getting travel insurance for a holiday in Russia, the type of cover will depend on which region you are travelling to.

West of the Ural Mountains is usually considered to be part of Europe and travel to this province can be covered by a Europe policy. It has a large portion of the country's population, even though it only covers a quarter of the Russian territory, and it includes major cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

The eastern side of the Urals forms part of northern Asia and is commonly known as Siberia. To have valid cover here, you will need to get worldwide travel insurance . This will ensure that you have protection for your trip, including medical cover and personal baggage that is damaged, lost or stolen. If you intend to visit both sides of the country, then you would need to get worldwide insurance to cover both areas.

If you are planning another trip over the next year, then annual multi-trip cover could be the cheaper option. Worldwide coverage would mean that you can travel as far as America, Canada and Australia within a one-year period without the need to get more travel insurance.

Russia travel advice

Arriving in russia.

Visitors are advised to carry their passport with them at all times, as there can often be random checks from police. You will also be required to register with the local authorities if you are staying in a location for more than seven working days. This is normally done automatically for you when staying at a hotel, but your host will need to do it if you are staying somewhere else.

The EHIC is not valid there, which makes travel insurance even more important, as it can help with healthcare costs that you could face. Hospitals often require cash or credit card payments in advance of treatments . You can usually bring prescription medication if you are planning to use it for personal needs, but some medicines require certain prescriptions to be allowed into the country, so it is worth checking with the Russian Embassy if you are unsure.

If you are planning to drive, you will need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP), and your car insurance policy must have a third-party cover as a minimum. The RAC’s guide to driving in the country explains that speed limits vary depending on what area you are in, but generally residential zones are limited to 37mph in built-up areas and 68mph on expressways. When driving you should carry all of your documents with you including your full valid driving licence, IDP, proof of insurance, passport and visa. Your car is also required to carry specific items such as a warning triangle, first aid kit, spare bulb, headlamp beam deflectors and a fire extinguisher.

The size of the country

The current population is estimated to be around 145 million people, making it the ninth most populous country in the world. This is despite it being the largest country in terms of land mass. Moscow is by far the most heavily populated area, with an estimated 12.4 million people living in the capital. The amount of people in Eastern cities is sparser, compared to the west which has considerably more citizens.

As the country is so vast it means that there are several different time zones, so the local time can vary quite dramatically depending on where you are. There are currently eleven time zones  spanning across the country, ranging from UST +02.00 in Kaliningrad to UST +12.00 in Chukotka. The time where you are will depend on which region you are staying in, and if you plan to travel around the country then it is likely that your time zone will change several times.

What to do on holiday in Russia

Being such a large country means that it is often impossible to see everything during one visit. The different regions can vary in their culture, as well as the sights and history that you can experience while you are there.

Many tourists will look to visit Moscow, the capital of Russia, during their first trip to the country. Red Square is one of the city’s most visited spots and it is known for its stunning architecture and for being home to the current president. It is also home to several tourist spots include St Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, as well as a market square where you can find vendors selling a variety of items and food.

St Petersburg is the second biggest city, with over five million people living there, and it has several popular tourist spots. The State Hermitage Museum is one of the most well-known tourist attractions, and it is the second-largest art museum in the world. It was founded in 1764 and has a vast art collection spanning over three million items, including work from various parts of the world.

There is also the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood , which was built during the 19 th century as a way of memorializing Alexander II. The Peterhof Palace can also be visited in St Petersburg and it has various gardens and palaces to explore. There is also the Winter Palace of Peter I, which visitors can walk around with private tours available for those looking to learn about its history. There is also an exhibition complex with historical items and paintings available to view.

The country has several nature spots to visit such as the Stolby National park near to Krasnoyarsk. There is also the Kamchatka Peninsula which is 1,250 kilometres long and can be found in the far eastern part of Russia. Visitors can see volcanoes, rivers and hot springs, as well as snow peaks in some areas of the region.

If you plan to get involved in some activities during your trip, make sure that it is covered as part of your travel insurance. Columbus Direct includes 150 sports and activities for free with every policy, which ensures that you are protected for football, zip-lining, yoga and various other activities.

If this isn’t enough, you can also get the Adventure pack add-on to include even more sports to your cover, while our Winter Sports option offers protection for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities. This includes emergency medical treatment and helicopter rescue, as well as cover for your equipment and delays on your trip because of piste closures and avalanches.

How to travel around Russia

It is the largest country in the world and if you are planning to visit more than one area, then you will need to decide on which mode of transport you want to use. There are many different options with local flights and trains considered to be the most popular choices.

There are over 150 airports in Russia, including five in Moscow. Which can make it easier to travel between cities, but you are advised to plan your trip beforehand. Aeroflot is the largest airline in the country, but it doesn’t travel to all airports. This means that you may have to look at other options depending on where you are looking to visit. You can compare them by using Airline Ratings , which rates them by safety standards, and it also includes details on seating, entertainment and food in-flight.

Experience the Trans-Siberian Railway

When it comes to trains, the Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the most well-known rail trips in the world. It runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, while there is also the option to take alternative routes through Mongolia and China . Each journey on the train can provide a different experience, as you have the option of going on various excursions, and the train has many different stops that it can make along the way.

Some of the most popular stops on the Tran-Siberian Railway include Yaroslavl, which is a city originally founded in 1010 and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site . The stunning city has a long history that you can see as you walk through the streets, while there are several 17 th century churches to visit as well.

There is also Lake Baikal , which is a historic lake in the Russian region of Siberia, and it is believed to be the deepest lake in the world. The area has a host of wildlife, including several species of plants that can only be found at the lake, as well as various freshwater fish and seal. Lynx and bears can also be found living in the surrounding area.

Some of the other trains can travel incredibly fast, such as the Sapsan , which moves between Moscow and St. Petersburg at an average speed 155 miles per hour.

What are the risks of travelling to Russia?

Green forest and snowy mountains in Russia

Most of the country is safe to visit, particularly if you remain mostly in the tourist areas. There are cases of pick pocketing and theft in some parts, so tourists are advised to keep their belongings close and to not leave any bags unattended. It is particularly common on public transport and in busy streets when travelling through some of the busier cities.

There are also some taxis that operate without a licence, and the safer option is to use a taxi app to book your journey or order a cab through your hotel. There have also been reports of drink spiking, which can lead to robberies and abuse, so it is advised that you buy your own drinks and keep them in your sight.

There have been a few terrorism attacks over the last ten years, including a suicide attack in St Petersburg in April 2017, while there have also been attacks in Moscow and other cities. There has been an increase in civil unrest and kidnapping in North Caucasus, while the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against travel to various areas, including Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.

Russia is also known for having a low tolerance towards LGBT+ issues, and it was ranked poorly by ILGA-Europe , which examines countries and their progress towards equality . The country has no laws in place to protect LGBT+ people from discrimination and hate crimes, and Moscow Pride was banned for 100 years back in 2012. There have been reports of violence and harassment to members of the LGBT+ community, and tourists are advised that public displays of affection could put you in danger if it draws negative attention.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am i covered for off piste and without a guide.

You’ll be covered for skiing and snowboarding both on and off piste provided you stay within resort boundaries. You don’t need to be accompanied by a guide.

Why do I need a winter sports policy?

If you’re planning to take part in any winter sports on your trip, you’ll need extra cover to insure you whilst you’re participating in winter sports activities. This extends the policy to cover you whilst you’re skiing or snowboarding – including emergency medical expenses cover if you suffer an injury. It also includes useful extras, like cover for your skiing or snowboarding kit (whether it’s owned or hired), piste closure cover and more

When should I purchase my ski policy?

If you want cover for a single trip, cancellation cover starts as soon as you buy your policy – so if you’ve already put a deposit on your ski holiday or paid for your flights or hotel, it makes sense to sort your travel insurance out right away.

If you’re considering an Annual Multi-Trip policy to cover all your travel this year, then cancellation cover starts from the start date on your policy.  So if you’ve paid for your trip, enter the policy start date as today to make sure your holiday is protected.

Don’t forget, there’s a 14 day cooling off period from the date of receiving your policy documentation – during which you can receive a full refund, provided you haven’t already travelled.

Does my EHIC cover me for winter sports in Europe?

The European Health Insurance Card  (EHIC) currently allows UK residents to be treated in EU countries as well as Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland, on the same terms as citizens of the country they are visiting.  It doesn’t cover the cost of repatriating you back to the UK airlifts off the mountainside.

Not all countries included in the EHIC agreement have totally free healthcare, so the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have always advised that the EHIC in no way replaces your travel insurance policy but it can help to reduce your costs.  We will remove the excess payable on any medical claim where an EHIC has been used.

If you have any unanswered questions, please visit our Winter Sports FAQ’s page for more information .

Reasons To Buy Russia Travel Insurance From Any Country

Russia travel insurance is essential for anyone planning a visit to this vast and diverse country. Whether you’re travelling for leisure, business, or exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Russian Federation, having the right insurance coverage is crucial.

When obtaining a Russian visa, it’s a mandatory requirement to provide proof of medical insurance for the duration of your stay. This medical insurance for Russia, often referred to as travel medical insurance, ensures that you are financially protected in case of unexpected medical expenses during your trip.

Here are some key reasons to consider purchasing Russia travel insurance:

Mandatory for Russian Visa: To obtain a Russian visa, you will need to provide evidence of medical insurance coverage. This requirement is in place to ensure that visitors have access to adequate healthcare services while in the country.

Healthcare Expenses Coverage: In the event of a medical emergency or illness during your stay, having travel medical insurance ensures that your medical expenses will be covered, including hospitalization, doctor’s fees, and medication costs.

Compliance with Regulations: Having the appropriate insurance policy for Russia ensures that you comply with the regulations of the Russian Federation. Failure to provide the necessary documentation, including valid medical insurance, could result in difficulties during your travel.

Protection for the Unexpected: Travel insurance not only covers medical emergencies but also protects against unexpected events such as trip cancellations, lost baggage, or flight delays. This helps you minimize financial losses in unforeseen circumstances.

Covers Various Aspects: A good Russia travel insurance policy should cover a range of aspects, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, baggage loss, and more. This comprehensive coverage ensures that you are prepared for various situations that may arise during your travels.

Ease of Obtaining Treatment: With the right insurance, you can access quality healthcare facilities in Russia without worrying about the financial implications. This is especially important in a foreign country where navigating healthcare systems may be challenging.

Legal Requirements: Besides being a visa requirement, having the appropriate travel insurance is also a legal requirement in Russia. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the specific insurance regulations of the Russian Federation to ensure compliance.

Russian Medical Insurance Requirements: Visa and Entry Information

When planning a trip to Russia, it is imperative to be aware of the visa and entry requirements, particularly the mandatory medical insurance. The Russian Federation stipulates that all visitors must have valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of their stay, and this requirement is closely tied to the visa application process.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding the significance of medical insurance for Russia:

Russian Visa Application: To apply for a Russian visa, individuals must provide evidence of medical insurance coverage. This insurance, often referred to as travel medical insurance or Russian travel insurance, is a key component of the visa application process.

Mandatory Requirement: The medical insurance requirement is not just a formality; it is a mandatory provision enforced by the Russian government. This is in place to ensure that visitors have access to necessary medical services during their stay in the country.

Coverage for the Unexpected: Medical insurance for Russia goes beyond visa compliance; it serves as a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. In the event of a medical emergency, the insurance policy covers expenses such as hospitalization, doctor’s fees, and prescription medications.

Comprehensive Insurance Policies: When selecting a policy, ensure it provides comprehensive coverage, including not only medical emergencies but also other aspects like trip cancellations, lost baggage, or travel delays. This ensures holistic protection against various potential disruptions.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Legal Compliance with the Russian Federation: Adhering to the medical insurance requirement is not just a matter of convenience but a legal obligation. Failure to provide proof of the necessary insurance may result in complications during the visa application process or upon entry into Russia.

Ensuring Health and Safety: Having valid medical insurance enhances the safety and well-being of travellers. It guarantees access to quality healthcare services in Russia, contributing to a smooth and secure travel experience.

Understanding the Insurance Policy: Before obtaining insurance, it’s crucial to understand the terms and conditions of the policy. Familiarize yourself with the coverage limits, inclusions, and exclusions to ensure that the insurance meets the specific requirements of the Russian Federation.

Peace of Mind for Travelers: Travelers can embark on their journey with confidence, knowing that they are adequately covered in case of any health-related contingencies. This peace of mind enhances the overall travel experience.

In summary, obtaining medical insurance in Russia is not just a visa prerequisite; it is a fundamental aspect of responsible travel planning. How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

International health insurance and travel insurance serve different purposes. While both may cover medical expenses, international health insurance provides long-term health insurance for working abroad. Meanwhile, travel insurance offers short-term coverage for the duration of your trip.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

How road trip insurance works

How to choose between road trip travel insurance companies, best plans for road trip travel insurance, other tips for road trip travel insurance, top cards with travel insurance for road trips, road trip travel insurance recapped.

There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.

Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.

Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.

This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:

Whether you’re renting a car.

Where you're traveling.

Whether you already have car insurance.

What types of coverage you’re interested in.

If you’re also planning on flying, cruising or using a ferry.

How long you’ll be gone.

The cost of the plan.

To figure out the best road travel insurance, we combed a variety of insurance providers to check out their offerings.

Our quotes were built using a hypothetical 37-year-old from California taking a road trip throughout the United States. The total trip time was 15 days, and the total trip cost was $2,700. Here were the top contenders.

US and allies in war of words with Russian-North Korean alliance

The United States and its regional allies in Asia Pacific have strongly condemned the newly announced military alliance between Russia and North Korea.

The US, South Korea and Japan released a statement on Monday expressing “grave concern” over the defence pact signed last week during a well-publicised state visit to North Korea by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Pyongyang official, meanwhile, slammed the US for sending arms to Ukraine. Amid Moscow’s continuing war against its neighbour, the deal commits Russia and North Korea to provide aid in case the other is attacked.

The three allies said in the statement that the alliance should alarm “anyone with an interest in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, upholding the global non-proliferation regime, and supporting the people of Ukraine”.

It said the trio also pledged to “further strengthen diplomatic and security cooperation” to counter threats from North Korea, with Washington promising its military support for South Korea and Japan remains “ironclad”.

‘New World War’

The escalating rhetoric comes after the nuclear-powered USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier docked in the port of Busan as part of trilateral exercises with South Korea and Japan.

North Korea has long viewed such drills as practice for an invasion. Vice Minister of Defence Kim Kang Il on Monday called the arrival of the aircraft carrier to the Korean Peninsula a “very dangerous” show of force.

He asserted that it leaves the doors open for North Korea’s “overwhelming, new demonstration of deterrence”, state media KCNA reported.

One of North Korea’s top military officials, Pak Jong Chon, meanwhile insisted that Moscow has the “right to opt for any kind of retaliatory strike” if Washington continues to push Ukraine into a “proxy war” against Russia.

Moscow could be provoked to mount a stronger response, which could lead to a “new world war” should the US maintain its decision to allow its weapons to be used against Russia , he added.

North Korea has previously responded to joint US military drills with missile tests, and Pyongyang still maintains that it was forced to set up its nuclear weapons programme by US hostility.

South Korea said last week that its soldiers fired warning shots after several North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the border in the third such incident this month.

This comes amid escalating incidents that have also included North Korea sending trash-filled balloons over the border, and South Korea launching propaganda leaflets and using gigantic loudspeakers at the border.

Election latest: Sunak told things have got 'infinitely worse' since Tories came to power

Sir Keir Starmer has denied reports Labour have given up on their candidate in Clacton because of jealousy about his success on social media. Meanwhile, a voter has challenged Rishi Sunak on the campaign trail - saying things have got "infinitely worse" since the Tories came to power.

Northern Ireland minister Steve Baker will launch a bid to become leader of the Conservatives should they lose the election on 4 July as expected, it is understood.

Mr Baker hinted at a bid to replace Rishi Sunak if he retains his Wycombe seat at the election.

He said: "One thing at a time. I want to represent the people of Wycombe the best that I can, as I always have done.

"Then let's see what happens."

It is understood that he will announce his intentions after polling day.

Speaking to HuffPost, Mr Baker cited his leadership experience through Brexit, COVID and net zero rebellions as reasons why he would be a suitable candidate.

"It's a fact my colleagues sent for me four times to provide leadership through crisis to success: before and after the referendum, in COVID and in relation to the cost of net zero," he said.

Rishi Sunak took questions from workers at a pottery plant in Derbyshire a short while ago - but they didn't exactly heap on the praise.

One worker told the PM that things had got "infinitely worse" since 2010 when the Tories took office, including soaring use of food banks which he labelled "not acceptable".

The PM replied: "I don't want anyone to have to use a food bank.

"But I'm also very grateful to all those people who volunteer for them, who support them, so that they are there for those who need."

He acknowledged there are "lots of frustrations that you, and others, will have about some things in the past".

But he argued the election is "about the future", and pitched the Conservatives as the party of financial security.

He was pushed on the matter of taxing "the millionaires and the billionaires" more, but replied: "Actually the proportion of tax paid by the richest people in income tax is higher today than it was in 2010 ... so that is already happening.

"And I want to keep cutting taxes for everyone who's working hard."

Earlier this week, Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak took part in an election event hosted by The Sun, which saw both take questions from the newspaper's readers.

One moment that has since caused a stir on social media was when the Labour leader appeared to single out people from Bangladesh when discussing illegal migrants not being deported quickly enough.

He has today sought to clarify that he values the "massive contribution" Bangladeshis have made to the UK - and the "longstanding and strong relationship" they have with the Labour Party.

Sir Keir said his first overseas trip as a Labour MP was to Bangladesh, and that many of his constituents are from the country.

"The reference in the debate the other day was an example of a country considered safe as far as asylum is concerned, and one of the countries that's actually got a returns agreement with us," he added.

"That is actually a good thing," said the Labour leader, adding: "I certainly wasn't intending to cause any concern or offence."

Reports in recent days have suggested Labour may have all but given up fighting for the seat of Clacton ahead of the election next week.

According to The Guardian, the party isn't doing much to help their candidate Jovan Owusu-Nepaul because officials are upset at how much traction he's been getting on social media - with some posts apparently getting more engagement than those by Sir Keir Starmer.

Mr Owusu-Nepaul has reportedly been deployed to the West Midlands for the campaign there instead, with his party seemingly abandoning the Essex seaside town.

Clacton has been in the spotlight during the campaign since Reform's Nigel Farage entered the race there.

Labour leader Sir Keir has insisted there's still a fight to be had.

"We are fighting everywhere, including in Clacton," he said.

"We want to take the fight to the Tories and Reform wherever they are.

"We are not backing down in Clacton, we are not backing down anywhere across the country."

The other candidates besides Mr Owusu-Nepaul and Mr Farage are:

  • Matthew Bensilum, Lib Dems;
  • Craig Jamieson, Climate Party;
  • Tony Mack, independent;
  • Natasha Osben, Greens;
  • Tasos Papanastasiou, Heritage Party;
  • Andrew Pemberton, UKIP;
  • Giles Watling, Conservatives.

Rishi Sunak has refused to say if he told one of his closest parliamentary aides the date of the election before he placed a bet on it.

Just to remind you, Craig Williams, who has now been suspended as the Conservative candidate in Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, admitted he "committed a serious error of judgment" but "not an offence" and declared he would continue to fight to win his seat.

Speaking to broadcasters, the PM insisted he was "furious" when he first learned about the allegations, and added "if anyone is breaking the rules, they should face the full consequences of the law, whether that's the Gambling Commission or the police."

Pushed repeatedly on whether he told Mr Williams - his parliamentary private secretary - the date in advance, Mr Sunak refused to say.

"It's absolutely not right when there are ongoing independent investigations, that those aren't compromised in any way, shape or form, they are rightly confidential," he said.

On behalf of all broadcasters, Sky's Sam Coates pointed out to Mr Sunak he cannot prejudice an investigation, only a jury.

But Mr Sunak still refused to say if he told Mr Williams the date of the election before it became public.

"Whilst there are ongoing independent investigations, including, as you said, by the police, it's important that those matters are allowed to proceed properly."

The other candidates for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr are:

  • Jeremy Brignell-Thorp, Green Party;
  • Oliver Lewis, Reform UK;
  • Glyn Preston, Liberal Democrats;
  • Elwyn Vaughan, Plaid Cymru;
  • Steve Witherden, Labour.

It's the morning after the night that saw Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer clash for the final time before the general election.

Here's everything you need to know - and some of what's still to come.

  • Reform UK  has won the backing of Sir John Hall, a former Tory donor and Newcastle United owner;
  • He was introduced at a campaign event by Nigel Farage , as the party looks for more support with just a week to go until polling day.
  • The Metropolitan Police have issued an update on their investigation into bets being placed on the date of the election;
  • There are now seven officers under investigation ;
  • Meanwhile, a Gambling Commission source has told Sky News the force could take over all cases currently being looked into - including those involving parliamentary candidates and party officials.
  • Junior doctors are on strike today and have expressed disappointment at the approaches of both the Tory government and Labour;
  • The co-chair of the BMA's junior doctors committee told Sky News the prime minister had failed to offer a "credible commitment" on pay ;
  • He also warned Keir Starmer strikes would continue if his possible new government didn't "negotiate in good faith".
  • Elsewhere, our political reporter Faye Brown has revealed more large donations from the chancellor to his local party;
  • Jeremy Hunt is under huge threat from the Lib Dems in his constituency of Godalming and Ash and has donated another £32,000 of his own money, latest figures reveal.

You won't want to miss tonight's Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge at 7pm, which features the latest of our in-depth interviews with party leaders.

This time it's the man who could be Britain's next prime minister: Labour's Sir Keir Starmer.

Stick with us through the afternoon for the latest news and analysis from the campaign trail.

A donor who has given more than £500,000 to the Conservative Party since 2007 has defected to Reform UK.

Sir John Hall, the former Newcastle United owner, is at Nigel Farage's rally in County Durham that is under way now.

He was integral to funding the Conservative 2017 snap election campaign, called by then PM Theresa May.

Speaking at the rally, Mr Farage said he is "delighted" that Sir John has joined them and given a donation to the party.

The businessman did not join Mr Farage on stage, but waved from the back of the hall as the crowd stood up and cheered.

As the election campaign enters the final week, Rishi Sunak has acknowledged that voters have left the Conservative Party in recent years - but appealed for public support.

Speaking during a visit to a pottery factory in Derbyshire, the prime minister said: "I understand why many of you might be hesitant about supporting us again at this election.

"I'm not blind to the frustrations that you feel about me, about our party."

He blamed many of the struggles on COVID and the war in Ukraine, but did concede the Tories "haven't got everything right", saying: "We've made mistakes, and we haven't made as much progress in all areas as we would have liked."

But he went on: "This is not a by-election. This is a choice about the future of our country and a choice that is going to have profound consequences for you, your family finances and the direction of our nation.

"Before you make that choice, you should just think very hard about what a Labour government would actually mean for you."

The PM said "you can't be sure" because Sir Keir Starmer "changes his mind on almost every major position he has taken".
