Vintage Rail Journeys - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
Experience Australian rail history with Vintage Rail Journeys' NSW itinerary
Want to feel like a celebrity? Your retro train carriage awaits.
When I first board the Aurora Australis, little do I know we'll be trailed by train paparazzi. Turns out those who are into trains, especially vintage beauties like this one, are well aware when their favourite subjects are on the move.
We're gliding through regional NSW on Vintage Rail Journeys ' five-day Golden West itinerary - the most popular of its three routes - when I notice vehicles following alongside us. Occasionally, they race ahead and pull over, with drivers jumping out to point their lens at this restored stainless-steel train with its distinctive fluted sides. I've never felt more like a celebrity - even though I know it's not about me.
Their pursuit is all about capturing the gleaming Aurora Australis - the result of a Canberra couple's single-minded obsession with restoring carriages of the Sydney-Melbourne Southern Aurora service, which shuttled between the two cities from 1962 to 1986. The luxury overnight passenger service started after the standard-gauge line between Wodonga and Melbourne was completed, removing the need for passengers to change trains at the border. Air and road competition, along with rising costs, soon dampened its early success. In 1986, the Southern Aurora merged with another rail service and, eventually, most of its carriages went to rail preservation groups.
In 2017, train enthusiast Simon Mitchell snapped up 16 carriages from one of these groups, which had gone into receivership. Together with his partner Danielle Smith and a squadron of paid helpers, he scrubbed away diesel soot and grime to reveal the carriages' forgotten beauty and return them to running order (a process costing about $300,000 per carriage). The couple's love of the 1960s era extends to their home - an ex-guvvie (government-owned house) in the Canberra suburb of Watson.
The whole thing is about saving this piece of Australia's rail history.
Those who sign up for one of their five-day NSW rail tours experience the revamped retro interiors in either a twinette (double-occupancy room with upper and lower bunks, fold-down metal toilet and shower) or roomette (small angled rooms with a door, basin, chair and fold-down bed, facing a zigzag corridor in a carriage with communal modern bathrooms). Word is that the roomette carriages are the most sociable and liveliest at night. Also shadowing us as part of the experience is another retro beauty - a Flxible Clipper (29-passenger bus) that Sir Reg Ansett imported from the US in 1947. Throughout the tour, we take turns riding it to various excursions.
When I travel the Golden West itinerary, it's doing a one-off clockwise circuit thanks to rail network maintenance. Normally, the route starts by sliding out of Sydney's Central Station bound for the Hunter Valley, stopping at Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River for a Riverboat Postman cruise. After exploring Hunter Valley Gardens and the picturesque Audrey Wilkinson vineyard, the train overnights in the lower Hunter village of Paterson. Then it's onwards to the Upper Hunter's Werris Creek, a railway town 43km from Tamworth. Here, enthusiastic volunteers show everyone through the Railway Journeys Museum located on the station platform (which Angelina Jolie used as a backdrop for her 2014 film, Unbroken ).
The journey towards Orange in the Central West includes traversing a freight-only line. In the regional city that was once famous for apples but is now best known for premium cool-climate wines, there's time to visit stately Cook Park and its glasshouse filled with pretty begonias. With the train stabled near Orange train station, dinner is served in the dining carriage over three sittings. As with every on-board meal, Central West ingredients feature prominently.
In Bathurst, passengers head either to Mayfield Garden, a sprawling cool-climate garden packed with Insta-worthy vistas, or to Abercrombie House, a stately historic house-museum. The train then noses along the closed Gwabegar line from Wallerawang to Kandos, which supplied cement for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After visiting the Kandos Museum, everyone kicks up their heels at a true-blue Aussie bush dance.
On the final day, there's time to explore the Blue Mountains and ride a different kind of train - the Scenic Railway is the world's steepest passenger railway. Then it's all downhill - geographically and emotionally - on the journey back to Sydney. Such is the camaraderie between passengers, guest attendants, crew and owners that it feels like this trip is over way too soon. Post-journey, the crew (from Lachlan Valley Railway, a rail preservation society) continues a heartfelt tradition by not putting in time sheets for their work.
Grateful passengers find their own ways to thank Mitchell and Smith for getting this train back on the tracks. They continue to be surprised with gifts ranging from single-malt whiskey to a quilt embroidered with their favourite mode of transport. "The whole thing is about saving this piece of Australia's rail history," says Mitchell, who also mucks in and helps wash dishes in the train's kitchen. "We just appreciate that this train means so much to so many people."

South Coast trains offline after severe weather exposes NSW railway track's fragility
Illawarra rail commuters say the disruption of services on the South Coast is all too familiar after severe weather wreaked havoc on the line and halted trains between Waterfall and Bomaderry from Saturday.
Transport for NSW scrambled to arrange bus replacements with local private bus contractors stepping into to fill the void for stranded commuters.
Transport for NSW says trains will resume this morning between Kiama and the city in both directions, however they will run to a reduced weekend timetable.
Buses will continue to replace trains between Bomaderry and Kiama.
The department is urging commuters to spend time planning their journeys or consider working from home.
Tony Horneman from the Illawarra Rail Fail community group said the ongoing closure felt all too common.
"Down the South Coast the commuters have kind of got used to this," he said.
"We have a third world rail service on the South Coast line and most people have developed a Plan B, but the reality is not all of us can work from home.
"There's a lot of jobs where you have to be physically at work, like at Sydney Airport, so they have to come up with creative ideas."
He said driving a car just added to the gridlock, so residents had looked at "carpooling or catching a bus".
The South Coast line is electric for two tracks to Kiama where it becomes a single track diesel service.
Mr Horneman said during severe weather events the lack of investment in infrastructure became painfully evident.
"It just shows you how precarious the South Coast rail line has become and the fact that it is not durable to support the current volume of rail use by passengers and also freight," he said.
Commuters at Wollongong Station told the ABC Monday morning they were frustrated by the impact of the line closure on their ability to travel around the region.
One explained it had taken him an hour and a half to get from Thirroul to Dapto, a distance of 26 kilometres.
Others said they were used to the situation and said they already had other plans and were taking the changes with "a grain of salt".
Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park said he has raised the issue with Transport Minister Jo Haylen.
"They're working to get that back online as quickly as possible because as a commuter city we know just how important that is," he said.
Transport for NSW has identified issues with the line at Wombarra, Scarborough, Port Kembla, the Macquarie Rivulet, Lilyvale, Coalcliff, Bomaderry and Bald Hill.
It says Sydney Trains has 250 workers carrying out repairs.
Buses will be stationed at Wollongong and Waterfall to supplement trains.
Counting the cost
The emotional toll caused by the severe weather over the last 48 hours is continuing to impact residents in the region.
Thirroul florist Kelly Jones had floodwaters rush through her business on Lawrence Hargrave Drive and then into her home, which is just behind the shop.
"It's been exhausting, emotional, and stressful," she said.
Ms Jones had monitored information from the Bureau of Meteorology on Thursday and Friday and prepared as best she could.
"We did everything we could to prepare and then all we could do was watch, just watch the inevitable," she said.
Her shop was inundated, with the water escaping as quickly as it rushed in.
"It runs right through, and just leaves a lake of mud," Ms Jones said.
Growing up in Thirroul, Ms Jones said she was familiar with the flooding events the region has recorded, but the frequency and intensity of this event left her questioning everything.
"I'm unsure of the contributing factors. Could there be blockages, or perhaps creek and stormwater diversions are affecting it?" she said.
It was the third year in a row she had floodwaters through her property and the second consecutive year they had flowed through her business.
"I am uninsurable," Ms Jones said.
She added that since a 2019 Wollongong City Council flood plain study deemed the area flood prone, she had been unable to find an insurance company willing to give her cover.
"I put 30 submissions out for insurance for our house. I got six responses in total and only one would consider insuring me if I took flood off the insurance policy," Ms Jones said.
She said she found the advice around insurance "inconsistent" and difficult to navigate and she is urging state and federal government's to improve support and insurance options for small businesses impacted by recurring natural disasters.
"The loss of things is somewhat trivial. It's just the exhaustion and so much effort that has to go into cleaning and repairing ."
